MyMD’s Concierge Medicine Takes Healthcare to Heart

and
are committed to taking a more personal approach and building relationships with their patients.

Dr. Mac Donell (r)
After working in the fast-paced world of traditional medicine for many years, BoardCertified Internal Medicine physician Dr. Richard Mac Donell yearned for a personalized approach to healthcare in order to make more meaningful connections with his patients. In 2006, he opened MyMD Personal Medicine, a concierge practice that allowed him to do just that.
“I didn't want to burn out and I didn't want to lose that zeal to relate to patients, to spend time with them,” he says. “To me, concierge medicine is about attention to detail and putting the patient in the center of the visit instead of the doctor.” He explains that 90 percent of diagnostic actions are based on history, so taking the time to learn everything about a patient is critical.
Concierge medicine is also about valuing patients’ time by not having them sit in a waiting room, and giving them the opportunity to have all of their questions answered. “It actually makes me push myself to be a better doctor and challenge myself because I have patients that come in with great questions,” notes Dr. Mac Donell. “They want to be proactive in their health, and they want someone to talk to about that. Oftentimes they don't get that with current traditional models because the appointments are just too short.”
MyMD Personal Medicine also provides house calls. For elderly patients or those who cannot come to the office, this allows continuous care. “They don’t have to arrange for transport or impose on family members,” Dr. Mac Donell explains. “They don’t have to go to an ER or urgent care, so we’re keeping patients out of those high cost, chaotic environments.”

Some of his patients have been with him for 20 years, before MyMD Personal Medicine was even founded, and many of those patients have referred others. “I always say you have to earn that repeat and referral business,” notes Dr. Mac Donell.
One of his patients, Debra Tebbs, is thankful for MyMD Personal Medicine, which she learned about when her husband was hospitalized. “Dr. Mac Donell was referred to us, and we were very impressed with his care and attention. I appreciate the whole team — they are attentive and caring. They respond immediately and Dr. Mac Donell is always available by cell. He is wonderful!” She notes that Dr. Mac Donell also helped diagnose her cancer and was assertive in referring her for oncology care.

MyMD is located in NW Crossing at 695 NW York Dr.
Dr. Matt Ingrassia

To offer the most personalized care, Dr. Mac Donell can only accept a certain number of patients into his practice. So, to provide this type of unique and beneficial care to a larger population, he recently brought a new doctor, Dr. Matt Ingrassia, on board.
According to Dr. Mac Donell, “Matt has ten plus years of experience, and he's done the gamut, like I did, with hospital-based medicine before transitioning into primary care practice.”
“I really enjoyed practicing in different healthcare systems because I feel it's allowed me to really understand different patient populations, different disease processes and ways of life,” states Dr. Ingrassia. “But traditional healthcare systems make it difficult to build on relationships, and ultimately I feel like those relationships are the ones that actually lead to better health outcomes.”
He was looking for a practice where he could spend more time with patients, offer a personalized approach to their healthcare, and make sure he could help them navigate the complicated healthcare system that is in place today.

“To me, concierge medicine is about attention to detail and putting the patient in the center of the visit instead of the doctor.”
— Dr. Richard Mac Donell, founder and owner of MyMD Personal Medicine
When he saw the opening with MyMD Personal Medicine, he decided to apply. “It’s funny. I had met Dr. Mac Donell years earlier when we shared a ski lift,” recalls Dr. Ingrassia. “I've always been really drawn to Oregon and all the outdoor activities there are to do here.”
Dr. Ingrassia had once lived in Oregon, and he and his wife, Alex, were happy to relocate to Bend with their infant daughter, Stella, and their four dogs.
“I’m enjoying being part of a smaller practice with more of a community feel,” he says. “Everyone is really friendly and helpful and I just look forward to working with all of them.”
“Matt’s desire to spend time interviewing patients and getting to know them is something he missed doing with hospital-only medicine,” Dr. Mac Donell notes. “It’s also nice for me to be able to share what I've learned about concierge medicine with someone who’s interested in this type of practice, because I think it's great.”
Drs. Mac Donell and Ingrassia look forward to bringing a more collaborative and next level concierge type medicine to more people. “At the end of the day, I feel fairly certain that I'm putting my best foot forward because I'm doing everything I can, spending as much time as necessary with each patient in order to help them feel seen and heard, not rushed and hopefully make them feel like they are getting the most value out of their experience with us,” says Dr. Mac Donell. “It’s just the right thing to do.”

WILD Oregon GIRL

ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIGUEL EDWARDS
LOCAL WOMAN USES HER SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM AS A FORCE FOR GOOD
In a time where social media often feels dominated by selfies and sales pitches, it’s refreshing to find someone using their platform to inspire, educate and lift others up. Even if you are not scrolling daily on Instagram or TikTok, you may have heard of local social media influencer, Renee Anderson, aka Wild Oregon Girl.
Anderson’s influence is not about glamour or trends – it’s about purpose. From raising awareness about conservation and environmental issues related to her beloved state, to championing mental and physical health and advocating for underserved communities, she uses her platform for good. For Anderson, being an influencer means more than sharing her life – it’s about shining a light on causes that matter and empowering others in her communities to make a difference.
A native Oregonian, Anderson was born in Portland but relocated to Sunriver in first grade. “My parents loved Sunriver, they were engaged in Sunriver and they wanted to raise me in a small town. My grandparents had a couple of businesses in Bend, so the move made sense,” Anderson says. She attended Three Rivers through middle school, then Bend High School. When Summit High School opened her sophomore year, Anderson transferred there and was in the first

graduating class. “Along with the arts, theatre, speech and band, I lettered in academics 17 times. I was really into academics!”
After high school, Anderson got into college for theatre, but financially could not afford to go. Instead, she began working in the food and beverage industry, first in Sunriver, then in Portland, then on the coast. In 2008, as newlyweds, she and her husband moved back to Sunriver.
In 2011, while a stay-at-home mom, Anderson decided to focus on her art career. She began to paint and had her work displayed at locations around Bend. When her child entered first grade in 2014, Anderson began a personal blog project. “I started writing historical narratives of local hikes. I would research a location, hike it, photograph it and write about my experience. I wrote one per week for 54 weeks and this blog is what I started posting later on Instagram. I also began curating for other Instagram accounts.”
As it often does, though, life threw Anderson several curve balls. After numerous extreme life stressors, Anderson experienced a serious mental health crisis at the end of 2016. Two separate episodes lead to ER visits and admission to Sage View Psychiatric Center in Bend. However, with no clear diagnosis or path forward, Anderson became her own mental health advocate, researching her condition, symptoms and where to find help.
In 2019, Anderson discovered Promises Five Palms in Ormond Beach, Florida. “This was the only facility in the country that offered a dual diagnosis rehabilitation. I knew what I was dealing with was serious, and I knew I was dealing with more than one issue. I was looking for a rehabilitation center that could support mental health and psychotic conditions and there are not many of those in the entire country.”
Anderson boarded a plane, beginning a journey toward health and wellness that would change the course of her life. At Promises Five Palms, she was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 with psychosis, which goes into schizophrenia when she experiences high levels of stress. “The 30-day program I went into is really unlike any other offered anywhere. It was a unique model for mental health care, but I believe in it because it changed my life. It gave me the skills and the space to be able to heal. I am still internalizing and processing what I learned there.”
Early on, amid her mental health struggles, Anderson shut down her Instagram accounts. “I didn’t want to say or do anything that would jeopardize that work. But, my psychiatrist at Five Palms said, ‘you have talents to share, you have a voice, you have a gift for writing and that’s why you are here… you need to use that,’ so I opened all of my social media accounts on the plane ride home.”
No matter the season, getting outdoors daily is a top priority for Anderson.

“I FEEL THAT IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO ethically REPRESENT ALL OREGONIANS. TO TAKE CARE OF OUR natural LANDS AND TO BE A good STEWARD."
— RENEE ANDERSON, AKA WILD OREGON GIRL
Anderson is passionate about her recovery, her continued mental and physical health – and how she utilizes her social media platforms. “I learned a lot about how to use social media in a healthy way, setting boundaries – like time limits, how you interact with others – I have a mission statement and a written code of ethics that states what I want to do with my media, and these are the behaviors that I follow. I don’t consume negative things, I create more than I consume… like if I am scrolling too much, I tell myself, ‘No, you need to go make something, you need to be contributing, not consuming.’ And, I have posted just about every single day since I got off the plane.”
Wild Oregon Girl, Anderson’s Instagram page, went viral in 2021 with a reel (or video) featuring Smith Rock. Currently
Wild Oregon Girl has about 137,000 followers and between four and seven million impressions, or views, per month. That first viral reel had over one million views within two days and gained Anderson almost 10,000 followers in one weekend. Anderson has never tried to hide her mental health struggles. Social media is not just a stage for her – it’s a tool to help others and make a difference in her community. Her honesty, authenticity and transparency, along with her vision of the world around her, is through the eyes of someone who values her place and connection to it all. Connection to the natural world has been paramount to Anderson’s healing journey, and to her continued health. This connection fuels her adventures, explorations and the creativity that makes Wild
Through Wild Oregon Girl, Anderson gives voice to conservation and stewardship of our beloved state.
Oregon Girl resonate with others. Indeed, her path to healing seems to be inextricably linked to her viral success as a social media influencer.
“What motivates me is my family and my previous struggles. I want to keep moving forward and enjoy the life I have been given. I am passionate about being present, soaking up the time I have with my teenager, working on peace and mental health and being creative every day,” reflects Anderson. “Professionally, I am passionate about connecting people throughout the state and beyond, to inspire and grow each day and to be a resource for those in need.”
A large part of Anderson’s rehabilitation and continued focus on health and wellness is service to others. “Living outside yourself, that’s huge,” she notes. “I can sit in my storm in my head all day long, but as soon as I start to focus on someone else or something else, it takes me out of what I’m dealing with. Service to others is the best therapy.”
Her career as a social media influencer carries a great deal of responsibility in Anderson’s mind. “I feel that it is my responsibility to ethically represent all Oregonians. To take care of our natural lands and to be a good steward. I want to support inclusive spaces for all and to always lead with empathy and kindness for others and our shared spaces.”
Anderson’s Wild Oregon Girl platform has led to a host of professional opportunities. She has recently been hired by some larger travel agencies, like Travel Oregon, Discover Klamath and Travel Southern Oregon doing media tours. She also has eleven charities that she works with, and she just signed on with the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, which she admits is one of her favorite projects. “I am also going to be working with Medicaid this year, to do enrollment for mental health services and to help bring awareness of available services to the community.”
"I HAVE A mission statement AND A WRITTEN CODE OF ETHICS THAT STATES WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY media , AND THESE ARE THE BEHAVIORS THAT I follow."
— RENEE ANDERSON, AKA WILD OREGON GIRL

In the end, Anderson’s mission is simple: to do good. She strives to make every day the best it can be, pursuing her passions with a heartfelt commitment to serving others. Through her creativity and artistic perspective, she not only inspires her audience to see the world in new and beautiful ways but also offers hope. Her story is a powerful reminder that life’s challenges can become stepping stones to creating a meaningful and lasting impact.

Peaceful Rest for Better Health
Sleep Apnea Solutions for a Healthy Night’s Sleep
An estimated thirty million adults in the United States have a form of sleep apnea, a common sleep disorder that causes frequent pauses in normal breathing during sleep. Symptoms include snoring, daytime fatigue and gasping for air while sleeping. Surprisingly, only around six million people have been clinically diagnosed and are receiving some form of treatment for their symptoms.
There are two main types of sleep apnea: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA). Someone with OSA has a narrowing of their airway, which leads to breathing disruptions while sleeping. With CSA, the breathing disruptions are caused by a lack of communication between the brain and the muscles. These interruptions reduce the quality of sleep and when left untreated can lead to cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure and other health conditions.
Since the 1980’s, sleep apnea treatments have come a long way in both holistic therapies and devices. The standard sleep study, polysomnography, monitors patients while they sleep to track breathing patterns, brain activity, heart rate and other important body functions. Once a patient is diagnosed with sleep apnea, a treatment plan can be put in place. Whether it’s a CPAP machine, an oral device or surgery, sleep apnea treatments, along with lifestyle changes, are important for long term quality of life.
ARTICLE BY JULIE E. FURNAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHADOW BEAR MEDIA
At Three Sisters Sleep in Bend, owner and operator Dr. Kylie Wasserman and her team focus on offering their patients an alternative therapy to treat snoring and OSA in the form of oral device therapy. This therapy works by using custom-fitted appliances that fit inside the patient’s mouth. The most common of these devices is a mandibular repositioning device (MRD) that moves the lower jaw into a forward position, lifting the roof of the mouth and increasing the space behind the tongue, thus increasing airflow. There are many benefits to these oral devices, including small size, comfort and ease of use, which make them an overall more effective treatment option for many patients.

Owner and founder of Three Sisters Sleep, Dr. Kylie Wasserman.
Dr. Wasserman began her journey with sleep apnea therapy during her dental residency. She grew up in northwest Ohio and attended Ohio State University for undergraduate and dental school, moving to Oregon to complete her dental residency at OHSU. After her residency, Dr. Wasserman moved to Central Oregon and began her dental career.
“After practicing general dentistry for several years, I began noticing more patients with symptoms of sleep apnea—things like snoring, fatigue, and even concerns from their family members,” notes Dr. Wasserman. “I wanted to do something more for these patients beyond just the typical dental care. After doing more research and taking

continuing education courses in dental sleep medicine, I decided to open a practice with a focus on treating sleep apnea. It felt like a natural fit for me to offer a non-invasive treatment option that could really change people’s lives.” In the summer of 2022, Dr. Wasserman founded Three Sisters Sleep.
Recognizing that everyone needs and deserves a good night’s sleep for overall health, Three Sisters Sleep works closely with a patient’s medical team to ensure a holistic approach to patient care. “Every patient is unique, so we create a treatment plan that fits their specific needs. Our goal is to help patients not only sleep better but feel better overall,” Dr. Wasserman states.
For patients new to the clinic, they begin with a comprehensive evaluation, which includes gathering medical history, symptoms and lifestyle factors. This information is key to mapping out an individualized treatment plan. Sleep physicians are often involved as well to diagnose the severity of the condition.
A good night's sleep can improve overall health for patients.
A custom-fitted oral device is an alternative therapy to treat snoring and sleep apnea in some patients.
If a patient is a candidate for an oral device, Three Sisters Sleep takes digital scans for a custom-made device. Once the device is ready, a fitting is done to make any necessary adjustments, follow-up visits are scheduled, and the patient works closely with their sleep physicians to ensure the device is working properly and symptoms are improving.
In Central Oregon, there are several factors that can affect sleep. At higher elevations, there’s less oxygen in the air, which may lead to difficulty breathing during sleep and either worsen or bring on symptoms that someone has never experienced before. “We also have a community that is very active, so injuries are common and can affect good sleep,” says

Dr. Wasserman. “Recent injuries and even chronic pain can make it difficult for people to sleep soundly, and good sleep is critical for healing and recovery. Undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea can worsen fatigue and slow the recovery process.”
“Managing sleep apnea is crucial to overall health, and oral devices are a great option for many people with mild to moderate sleep apnea,” Dr. Wasserman notes. At Three Sisters Sleep, their mission is to help their patients get a peaceful, uninterrupted night’s sleep and discover the benefits of this non-invasive, yet effective, alternative treatment option.

GETTING THERE SAFELY
Driving Tips for Central Oregon Winter Roadways
ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER

Before you head out across town or out of town, be sure to check the weather, the forecast and road conditions. Online, TripCheck.com offers information on road conditions, expected travel times, incident information, links to weather reports and live cameras around the state. Travel information is also available by dialing 511 or calling 800.977.6368 or 503.588.2941

Carry a winter emergency kit in your car, complete with: a snow shovel, broom and ice scraper; abrasive material (sand or kitty litter) in case you get stuck in snow; jumper cables; flashlight and warning devices (flares and emergency markers); fully stocked first aid kit; blankets; cell phone charger; water, food and any necessary medications.
Keep your gas tank at least half full. Slow down and give yourself extra time for safe travel. Increase your following distance. Drive with your lights on. If you find yourself in a skid, remain calm and take your feet off all pedals, turning the steering wheel in the direction you want to go. Watch out for snowplows and sanding trucks. Be kind.
1. PLAN AHEAD
2. EQUIP YOUR CAR WITH EMERGENCY SUPPLIES
3. WINTER DRIVING SAFETY TIPS

5. CHECK YOUR OIL AND YOUR BATTERY
Don’t postpone oil changes as you need to have the correct viscosity grade for winter. And, old oil can become sludgy, making your engine work harder than necessary. Because your vehicle may require more power to start in cold weather, and cold can affect your battery’s overall performance, be sure to have your battery inspected.
4. CHECK YOUR TIRES
Winter driving conditions can be extreme and can change the way your tires grip the road. Whether you choose studded snow tires, winter-rated tires or use all-season tires, it’s a good idea to have your tires inspected for safety. As temperatures drop, so does the pressure in your tires, so keep an eye on each tire’s pressure through the cold weather months.
6. MAKE VISIBILITY A PRIORITY
Snow and ice can quickly accumulate on your vehicle and take time to clear. Before you head out, take time to clear windshields and windows, roof, lights and any cameras on your vehicle. Make sure your windshield wiper fluid reservoir is full of fluid with de-icer. Ensure defrosters are in working order and replace worn windshield wiper blades.
