Home

I like to believe that home is more a feeling than a place, surrounding us with warmth, comfort and love. And although “home” looks different for each of us, the value it holds for us is key to our wellbeing. I know that when I look around at keepsakes and meaningful items in our home, the stories they tell and the memories they bring to mind reflect the story of our family and warm my heart.

This month we explore “Among the Trees,” a tree house adventure. If you’ve ever seen the old Disney movie Swiss Family Robinson or read the novel, an experience at Out N’ About Treesort in Cave Junction, Oregon brings that fantasy to life. Full of rustic adventure and family friendly “activitrees”, this experience has it all. For a more refined treehouse experience, the following pages also introduce you to the treehouses at Skamania Lodge in the Columbia River Gorge, designed for a relaxing and luxurious getaway in the trees. We hope this story inspires you to book your adventure!

As grateful as we may be to have a home that we love, for many in Central Oregon, circumstances in life have made homelessness a harsh reality. Bend Lifestyle reached out to Central Oregon Villages (COV) in Bend, which operates 28 shelter units with plans to expand. We hope by shining a light on the important work COV and other organizations are doing will help bring our community together even more and encourage us all to lend a helping hand.

As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll find ideas to make your home more meaningful with things you can create.

With gratitude from our home to yours!

AMONG THE TREES

Imagine waking up in a treehouse, the wind rustling through the leaves as the branches gently rock you awake, high above the forest floor. The world below feels distant, like something from a dream—where you could easily be Peter Pan, free in your own treetop paradise. Or maybe you are an Ewok, safe and cozy in your secret hideout. Oregon brings these fantasies to life with its range of treehouse escapes. Whether you're resting in a rustic yurt, lounging in a luxurious suite in the pines, or zipping through the canopy on a heart-pounding adventure, our state offers a magical retreat for every kind of explorer. Here the trees aren't just for climbing—they’re your gateway to adventure, relaxation, and a dose of childhood wonder.

DREAMY AND UNIQUE TREEHOUSE ADVENTURES IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

In the hills near Takilma, Oregon, the Out ‘N’ About Treesort is a magical escape where treehouses are more than just a place to sleep—they are the beginning of your own fairytale. Located about an hour from Medford, this family-friendly destination offers a variety of treehouses, sky bridges, and zip lines. The property was brought to life by Michael Garnier, a former Green Beret, who turned his dream of a treehouse village into reality. Over 30 years ago, Garnier set out to prove that it was possible to build a village in the trees, despite skepticism. Today, the Treesort is one of the most famous treehouse experiences around. Garnier himself has become a treehouse expert and teaches classes on how to build your own fort in the sky.

Guests can explore his forest world through a series of swaying sky bridges—scary at first but ultimately a great adventure. These narrow bridges, lined with rope lights, create a sense of swashbuckling adventure as you cross from one treehouse to another. The treehouses themselves are charming, cozy, and simple, with large windows that offer stunning views of the forest below. Rooms come equipped with queen-sized beds, bunks, and basic amenities. You can choose the height of your accommodation as well, ranging from a short step off the ground to 40 feet high.

The Treesort also offers plenty of family-friendly fun activities. You can grab a meal at the communal kitchen, gather around a fire pit, play ping pong or try out the rope swing. For those seeking even more action, there are even zipline courses.

A short drive away is The Oregon Caves National Monument. Visitors can explore this unique marble cave system through guided tours that reveal fascinating geological formations and underground streams.

For a more refined treehouse experience, Skamania Lodge is the place to go. Located just outside Portland in the Columbia River Gorge, Skamania’s Luxury Treehouses offer a high-end getaway surrounded by lush, green forest. The treehouses here

are world-class and designed to send you straight from the ground into the clouds of luxury.

The tree “suites” are spacious, with 710 square feet of living space. Inside, there is a king-sized bed, a queen daybed nook with bay windows, and a full bathroom with a walk-in shower. Large windows let in plenty of light, while the forest views create a meditative atmosphere. Outside, the expansive deck offers space to relax, with a private fire pit for cozy nights under the stars. The indoor-outdoor gas fireplace adds to the

A visitor enjoys the 55 ft. pendulum “Tarzan Swing” at Out ‘N’ About Treesort, a thrilling ride of your life!

Starting with easy lines to help you get comfortable, the course ends with high-speed rides through the forest canopy. The lines offer stunning views of Mt. McLoughlin and Table Rocks. Safety is a priority, with expert guides, top-notch equipment, and a comprehensive safety briefing before the adventure begins.

Next head to Laurel Hill Golf Course for lunch before continuing to the Rogue River for a white-water rafting tour. The rafting includes a mix of class II and III rapids, building up to thrilling class IV waterfalls like Gold Nugget and Ti’lomikh. The Rogue River is truly one of the most beautiful waterways in the state. Guides provide safety instructions and expert support throughout, ensuring everyone feels secure and ready for the rapids.

The day winds down with a visit to Del Rio Vineyards, a 200-acre winery overlooking the rolling, golden hills of Southern Oregon. Here you can relax and enjoy local wines, a welcome change of pace from the previous challenges of flying and rafting through some of Oregon’s most pristine and gorgeous countryside.

Skamania Lodge (featured in the photos at right and on page 17) is the ultimate place to restore and relax. After spending time in your treehouse, enjoy a spa treatment, hike through the Columbia River Gorge, or enjoy a locally sourced dinner in the Lodge. The area is rich with history, particularly the native cultures of the Wasco, Yakama, and Warm Springs tribes, who have lived in the area for centuries. The lodge is full of Native artwork, stories, and history. Skamania celebrates this heritage, providing a meaningful connection to the land and its people.

The Zip-Dip-Sip tour near Gold Hill, Oregon offers a more hands on tree experience. It is a full-day adventure packed with ziplining, white-water rafting, and wine tasting. It begins with a shuttle to Rogue Valley Zipline Adventure, where guests experience five progressively thrilling ziplines.

JOHNSON BROTHERS APPLIANCES:

A 75 Year Legacy of Serving Central Oregon

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE SHADOW BEAR MEDIA

When Vernon Johnson founded The Home Center in 1950 to focus on building houses with his wife Charcelene, the company was located in their garage. Years later, their son Bob moved back to Bend to join the family business after graduating from college.

“My dad ended up buying one of the last houses they built in 1980 off of Eagle Road, and that's where I grew up,” says Bob’s son, Dave Johnson. His father and his aunt, Charcie, ran the business, now known as Johnson Brothers Appliances, until 2015, when Bob passed away.

At that time, Dave retired from a 20 -year career as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to Bend to join the family business as president/general manager. “It's an honor and a blessing to keep their legacy alive and also have a mature business to be able to step into and keep going,” he says. He joined his aunt and his mother, Marsha, and soon after, his brother Brian came on board as well.

This year, the store is celebrating its 75th anniversary and is an institution in Bend, encompassing an impressive 30,000 square feet. A true family business, it continues to carry the values that his grandparents established.

“We’re a completely local company. We don't have stores outside of the area, and our legacy is being able to take care of our local community,” says Dave Johnson. “This includes finding some

one-off solutions that some of the bigger companies can't, and really staying true to our roots with that personalized service.”

More than a few of the employees have been with the business for many years. “We had somebody retire a couple of years ago with 35 years of service, and other employees who have been here 20, 30 years. They built relationships with repeat and new customers through generations, because the parents who bought from us now have kids who are buying appliances for their own homes.”

Everyone on staff has a high level of expertise. “The appliance world is surprisingly complex,” Johnson says. “There are so many manufacturers, models and regulations. Things change over time, so there are constantly new features that come out and we’re

really able to help curate and find solutions for what our customers need.”

Johnson Brothers offers home appliances from basic models to those with new and improved features. For example, although induction cooking has been around for quite a while, there's been an increased interest in induction cooking as some homeowners transition away from cooking with gas. Induction uses a magnetic field to heat the pan itself unlike a traditional electric range. A very efficient

cooking method, it offers the fastest boiling time of any cooking technology.

When it comes to newer ovens, including microwave ovens, many now have air fryer technology built in. “Some microwaves now also have toasting functions and convection so you can bake cookies in them. They can basically act as second ovens.”

With refrigerators, the biggest improvement is with efficiency. “If you're replacing a 20-year-old refrigerator, your energy bill is probably going to be cut in half,” notes Johnson. Additionally, a lot of manufacturers are looking at factors in food preservation, such as filtering out ethylene gas to prolong the life of fruits and vegetables. Other manufacturers have incorporated cameras inside refrigerators, making it possible to see inside while at the grocery store, to purchase what is needed.

All-in-one washers and dryers are generating a lot of interest too, especially for those living in apartments or for homeowners who may want two units to do more laundry at one time. “The technology is continuing to get better, and there are a couple of manufacturers that now have a two-hour cycle that is able to wash and dry a normal sized load.”

Johnson Brothers Appliances has one of the largest warehouses and inventory of appliances in Central Oregon. For those

who may need an appliance right away to those seeking a customized product, the store can deliver – literally. “We are full service, which includes delivery and installation, including custom installs of built-in appliances. We can also service most of the products that we sell for the life of that product.”

The advantage of any smaller business or any family owned business, Johnson explains, is that it can be very responsive and dynamic. “We have a very short decision loop – if we need to change a policy or come up with a one-off solution to meet a customer's needs, it can be done fast. Plus, I'm right here and people can walk into my office anytime and ask me questions.” JBBend.com

IT TAKES a Village

Central Oregon Villages Provides Stable Housing

ARTICLE BY DONNA BURKLO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARY CALICOTT
Central Oregon Villages shelter units in Bend.
"An Artist's Unit" and space of her own.

Kirsa Smith, a 36 year-old lifelong Central Oregonian, remembers well the night she became houseless. How could you not? “I didn’t feel like I could reach out for help, so I just set out in my car,” she recollects. It was March of 2021. Smith is still houseless today, yet she has found shelter and a path to stable housing at Central Oregon Villages.

Many of our Central Oregon neighbors have a similar story, one about the “one last thing” that pushed them over the edge and into homelessness. For some, their rental home sold and the new owner moved in or raised the rent. For others, a medical emergency and missing work set the downward spiral in motion. And addiction — while more often an effect of homelessness —  can also be a cause. After doing the work in treatment, what if you have nowhere to live when you graduate? How much harder is it to remain drug-free when you are sent back out on the streets?

Between March of 2021 and October of 2023, Smith lived in her car and worked delivering restaurant meals with her boyfriend to survive. Things that were bad took a turn for the worse when her partner was arrested and their car impounded. Suddenly Smith was alone, without a car/shelter, and feeling vulnerable. This was the turning point.

The Bethlehem Inn was her initial safe haven. While in their care, Smith made some hard yet firm decisions including one to kick drugs and alcohol. In December of 2023 she entered the Turning Points residential program. Once well on her way to lasting sobriety, she set additional goals: a job, a plan to be with her children again, a plan to be self-sufficient. She graduated from the program in October of 2024 and celebrated one year of sobriety in November.

Central Oregon Villages (COV) was there when her resident program at Turning Points was over. The promise of a campus where all participants agree to live drug and alcohol-free and engage in regular professional case management check-ins was the next step Smith knew would keep her moving forward. Especially important was the fact that she would be able to have her children with her regularly as she worked to regain their trust.

A temporary outdoor shelter program initially stood up by dedicated volunteers and the City of Bend, Central Oregon Villages now operates 28 shelter units in Bend with plans for more in the works. Participants have their own heated individual or family shelter unit with a mini fridge and access to toilet facilities. The village site has on-site showers, a kitchen trailer, and a yurt available to gather for

meals, games, or to just hang out. In the summer, a vegetable garden grows, thanks to the green thumbs of volunteers and villagers working together.

Amy Fraley is the Senior Program Manager for Houselessness Solutions for the City of Bend. “Critical to the solution is a continuum of shelter services and types,” she states. Central Oregon Villages provides two types: safe parking and non-congregate shelter. “By offering guests individual space, robust case management and housing navigation services, COV meets clients where they are with the compassion and accountability necessary to stabilize for their next steps,” Fraley continues.

For Smith, the emphasis Central Oregon Villages has on making connections in the community is key. She has found strength through her involvement with the nonprofit, Mperfectly. She has found hope for future homeownership through working with Bend-Redmond Habitat for Humanity. She has found a church that helps feed her soul.

The future is looking as bright as the gleam in Smith’s eyes. Her hard work has paid off. She has married her also now sober boyfriend, she has her goals in front of her at all times. “The holidays were so different this year,” Smith says with a smile, “My family didn’t invite me last year and they did this year. They’re proud of me.”

Our Home as a Sanctuary

CREATING A DEDICATED SPACE FOR PEACE AND RENEWAL

“Home” is a word that carries profound meaning. It represents a place where we live, but it can also be much more – a sanctuary. The word “sanctuary” might not be one you immediately associate with your home, but at its core, it means a place of refuge and safety.

One fundamental human right is the right to sanctuary and shelter. Our homes meet our basic human needs, whether we own, rent or share them. Whether it’s a house, an apartment, a condo, or even a tiny home, our living spaces are where we return daily to rest and nourish our bodies, care for ourselves and nurture our families.

Home is deeply personal – a reflection of our tastes, styles, and individual needs. In today’s world, most homes are equipped with a plethora of smart devices and advanced technology that add convenience to our lives. But, have you ever considered the importance of creating a quiet, mindful space in your home? Have you ever thought about your home as a sanctuary? With a few simple changes and some intentionality, it is possible to transform a space in your home into a peaceful sanctuary – a place free from stress and pressure.

Tips for Creating a Tranquil Retreat in Your Home:

1.  DECLUTTER YOUR SPACE

Start by removing unnecessary items. Clutter can cause stress and anxiety and make you feel overwhelmed. Donate or store items you not longer need to keep clutter to a minimum to create open, breathable spaces. Minimalism can promote peace and clarity.

2.  INCORPORATE NATURAL ELEMENTS

Getting out in nature daily is certainly a great way to reset and recharge. Try bringing nature indoors by adding plants, flowers or even small water features. A favorite piece

of wooden furniture with a comfortable cushion, a piece of driftwood, a rock or seashell, even incorporating a window that can connect you to the outdoors can be great ways to bring the calming, healing power of nature indoors.

3.  CHOOSE CALMING COLORS

“Color psychology” is a science that studies how different shades of colors affect human behavior, including our moods, and influence us on a different level. Some colors are known to promote calm, tranquility and comfort. Shades of blue are often named the most calming color. Opting for neutral or soft color palette in shades of blue, green, beige or pastel tones can promote a sense of calm and serenity.

4.  LIMIT TECHNOLOGY

Consider making your sanctuary space a technology-free zone. Reducing screen time in your dedicated refuge space can help create a more peaceful environment.

5.  USE SOFT LIGHTING

Where possible, incorporate windows for natural lighting. Consider replacing harsh overhead lights with lamps or dimmable options, or replace overhead light covers with shades that soften the light. Candles, string lights or salt lamps can also create warm, tranquil ambience.

6.  INCORPORATE CALMING SCENTS

Essential oils are known for their healing and regenerative properties. Scented candles and incense can also enhance the mood in your relaxation space. Lavender, chamomile, orange, sandalwood, lemon and rose are a few fragrances that can enhance relaxation.

7.  PLAY SOOTHING SOUNDS

Soft background music or nature sounds are a great way to mask distractions and create a serene atmosphere. Whether you choose classical music, soft instrumental pieces or the sound of wind or waves, suffusing your sanctuary space with soft peaceful sounds can help promote focus and even help bring about rest and healing on deep levels.

With a few simple changes and some intentionality, it is possible to transform a space in your home into a peaceful sanctuary – a place free from stress and pressure.
Whether it’s a house, an apartment, a condo, or even a tiny home, our living spaces are where we return daily to rest and nourish our bodies, care for ourselves and nurture our families.

8.  EMBRACE PERSONAL TOUCHES

Beauty and comfort are personal. Your home, even the space you dedicate to peace and tranquility, is a place for you to express yourself. Surround yourself with what you love, meaningful objects such as a favorite photo, a beloved blanket, a few momentos that evoke happiness and peace. A personal touch makes your sanctuary space uniquely yours.

9.  INCORPORATE MINDFUL RITUALS

No matter where you decide to create space for sanctuary in your home, dedicate the space to what soothes you. Offer yourself space to unwind, rest, reset and be more mindful of your need for relaxation. From practicing yoga or meditation to journaling, painting, knitting or listening to music, or simply curling up with a cozy blanket and cup of tea… whatever brings you peace in any given moment can be your mindfulness practice.

10.  PRACTICE INTENTIONAL LIVING

Approach the sanctuary space in your home, indeed your entire home, with intentionality. Taking the time to regularly reflect on what feels restful and supportive. Make adjustments as your needs evolve, ensuring your home continues to be a place of comfort and renewal, and of course, joy.

By taking small steps to create a tranquil retreat space, your home can become more than a place to live – it can be true sanctuary where peace, restoration and refuge are top priorities.

• Flour

• Salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, bay leaves

• Beef broth

• Cubed russet or red potatoes

• Sliced carrots

• Minced garlic

• Red wine (cooking)

• Brown gravy mix (optional for thickening)

• French bread

directions

• Pat the roast dry and cover it lightly in flour. Coat a non-stick, flat pan lightly with olive oil and brown the roast on each side. Once the roast is browned on each side, set aside.

• In a slow cooker or Dutch oven that is coated lightly in olive oil, put the meat inside. Season the roast thoroughly with salt, pepper, and other spices. Add about a teaspoon of minced garlic. Pour beef broth and half a cup of red wine over the roast and top with bay leaves. Cover and cook for about three to four hours.

• After four hours, open the lid and add in the cut-up potatoes and carrots. Cook for the remaining time or until the meat shreds with a fork and the vegetables are soft. This is a good time to add brown gravy mixes or more flour to the broth if you want a more gravy-like consistency. Serve over crusty French bread.

• Pair with 14 Hands Hot to Trot Red Blend.

• Once the pot roast has been devoured, it’s time for a light dessert! Ginger snap cookies and vanilla bean ice cream sandwiches are the perfect blend of sweet and spicy to end this warming winter meal. Take ice cream out of freezer and immediately start scooping in between two small to medium sized ginger snap cookies – serve and enjoy!
