Hello Friends
april 2014
The things I do for this magazine!

Karyn Slovin, Jim Newman, Sue Collins
The nice people at Hydro-clinic in Buckhead invited me to visit their new office to find out more about their feel-good procedure. So, I popped in after a particularly taxing weekend. I was not partying (though many who come in for hydration therapy are chasing a hangover). I was at Garage Games One, a CrossFit competition where I actually came in second in my division! I had a “cocktail” of Toradol, magnesium, calcium, a few B and C vitamins intravenously pumped into my system and bounced out of there feeling like a million bucks. (Didn’t hurt a bit.)
Feeling good, I continued my Healthy Living journey (this month’s focus) and worked on a story about aging gracefully, talking with Dr. Sharon Harley who supports bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and shares her forever young secrets on page 18. Mary Blackmon of Brookhaven has some good ideas, too. She launched a cool website, FarmStarLiving. com where she reminds us that eating food sourced locally can be easy and smart. Mark Bracey, a journalism student at Clarke University helped with this story. Thanks, Mark, and good luck with finals!

“I want to first start by saying that Atlanta Dental Spa has the very best customer service from the knowledgeable staff to the warm bubbly personalities greeting you at the front desk. I came in for a cleaning at Atlanta Dental Spa–and I have extreme anxiety when it comes to the dentist–and all of my fears were diminished with the warm and comforting personalities of the dental hygienist and her assistant. They offered me a warm neck pillow and a paraffin wax hand treatment. My hygienist was extremely knowledgeable and she educated me on so many things involving my teeth and gums (for a moment I thought she was the dentist!) I was amazed by the thoroughness of the dental hygienist during the cleaning. That was the best cleaning I'I've ever had. After having my teeth cleaned, I met the doctor and he was wonderful; he explained my treatment plan to me and answered all of my questions. I would recommend Atlanta Dental Spa to everyone. They are the best!” -Brea, Atlanta Dental Spa cosmetic and oral wellness patient

Olympic Gold Medalist and Lovett alum, Adam Nelson, ’93, visited Lovett recently. His story is one of integrity, commitment, and discipline. Nelson initially won the shot put silver medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics. However, almost a decade later, in 2013, it was discovered that the gold medalist, Yuriy Bilonog of Ukraine, tested positive for doping, and as a result was disqualified. Nelson was then awarded the gold medal. Because of the timing of Nelson being awarded the gold medal, he lost roughly $2 million in endorsements. While at Lovett, Nelson played three sports, all four years, earning All-State honors in all three and All-American honors in the shot put. Off the field he took on roles in the fine arts program. Nelson attended Dartmouth College and was the first freshman to play varsity football in the Ivy League. He continued to excel in athletics and won seven conference individual titles as well as the NCAA Championship his senior year. After retiring in the fall of 2012, Adam joined the Athens Orthopedic Clinic (AOC) as Director of Sports Performance at the Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Clinic.

Healthy Lifestyle • The Sometimes Smoker. People who smoke at social gatherings or sneak a few cigarettes when they are stressed out may not consider themselves “real” smokers, but they’re still putting themselves at a real risk. In fact, having just one cigarette a day can substantially increase your risk for developing lung cancer. Contrary to popular belief, cigarettes don’t make you less anxious or less stressed. Instead of smoking, try meditating or walking to relieve your stress levels. And don’t bring cigarettes to social events – you’re less likely to smoke if you have to get cigarettes from someone else.

• The Second-hand Smoker. People who live with smokers subject themselves to the same carcinogens that smokers do. Studies show that second-hand smoke may cause asthma, respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome and even heart attacks. If you live with a smoker, getting him or her to quit is your best bet for improving your health—and the smoker’s health. And if that doesn’t work? Ask them to smoke outside. Not only will it keep your house smoke free, but it may also deter them from smoking. • The Former Smoker. Your risk level depends on how much and how long you smoked before as well as other lifestyle and genetic factors. Nonetheless, you’ve made a giant step toward reducing your risk for lung cancer as well as heart disease, stroke and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The single best thing you can do as a former smoker is to never pick it up again. Talk about your smoking and family history with your physician and discuss when and if lung cancer screenings are right for you.

• The Smoker. Of the more than 7,000 known chemicals in cigarette smoke, 250 are known to be harmful and at least 69 are cancer causing. And these carcinogens don’t just lead to lung cancer– smoking is also associated with the development of head, neck, esophageal, kidney, stomach, cervical and pancreatic cancers, among others. Quitting is easier said than done, but the payoff—a long and healthy life—is worth it. In fact, your chance of developing cancer begins to diminish after just one month of quitting. If you’re thinking about quitting, talk to your doctor about possible screenings, join a support group and ask for the support of your friends and family. And don’t rule out the help of prescription pills and nicotine gum or patches, which can enhance your willpower.

A Little Help Goes a Long Way
A conversation about aging with Dr. Sharon Harley.

Article Sue G. Collins
ince I turned 50, I have been acutely aware of the rapid changes in my skin and metabolism but have always been too proud (lazy? cheap? uninformed?) to ask for help. After this conversation with Dr. Sharon Harley, a pioneer in the anti-aging field, I am feeling younger already and hope you will too! SGC: What is the most popular treatment currently at your practice that we should know about? SH: Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Due to the changing and stressful environment, along with increased awareness of the significant side effects of synthetic hormones, more men and women are seeking natural options for menopause and andropause (male menopause). The treatment in highest demand at my practice is the wild yam pellet which is used for men and women. This has increased in popularity due to its convenient delivery mechanism. One treatment can last for 3 to 8 months at a time, so it is very convenient. It gives significant relief for fatigue, hot flashes, insomnia, brain fog, anxiety, depression and the other symptoms associated with andropause/menopause. SGC: What is the most common misunderstanding about treatments at your practice? SH: The side effects of natural estrogens and testosterone are misunderstood. The data from synthetic hormones have been extrapolated to natural hormones and this deduction is not evidence based. Research from 2005 which was followed up in 2008 shows that

there is no increased incidence of breast cancer in women on BHRT as compared to women in the general population on no hormones. SGC: What are your top 3 “forever young” secrets our readers should know about? SH: 1) Replace hormones naturally as it helps prevent the decreased metabolism, weight gain and wrinkling of skin caused by aging. 2) Exercise regularly. 3) Start skin care and anti-aging regiments early preferably in the 20s to early 30s. SGC: What are your top 3 good health secrets our readers should know about? SH: 1) Eat real unprocessed foods, minimize sugar and salt in diet, eat healthy fats. 2) Make sure foods are hormone free. 3) Maintain healthy anti-oxidant levels which can be checked easily without blood work. This is done using a light-based laser for less than $30.00. This is important to know as high anti-oxidant levels will help you fight diseases in our environment that are triggered by elevated free radicals such as cancer, heart disease and auto-immune conditions which are infection based. Dr. Sharon Harley, a board certified physician, is a pioneer in the anti-aging field with a fellowship in functional integrative medicine. She founded the Harley Anti-Aging Institute as a means of improving health care for both men and women with a focus on hormone balancing, anti-aging, weight management, non-invasive procedures and aesthetics, treating the “whole person.”

uckhead is privileged and proud to have among its residents Laura Turner Seydel and her beautiful home, EcoManor – the first LEED-certified gold residence in the Southeast built to be a blueprint for state-of-the-art sustainability. Laura’s name is synonymous with environmental initiatives and green efforts to make the planet a better place for children today and tomorrow. An international environ-

mental advocate and eco-living expert, she is chairperson of the Captain Planet Foundation (CPF), which promotes environmental education and gardens in schools. Laura is passionate about keeping toxic chemicals out of consumer products and works with Environmental Protection Agency officials and the Environmental Working Group to educate the public about the effects of these toxins. Among her favorite things in Buck-
head, Laura mentions great neighbors, magnificent old trees, parks and the walkability of the neighborhood. “We are very grateful for these blessings,” shares Laura. As chairperson of CPF, she says planting school gardens is one of the highlights of her challenging yet rewarding work. “It is fun to watch the children who are very tentative their first time because they have learned to be concerned about dirt, germs, bugs and eating vegetables. But in a very short amount of time children get over their fear and learn to love planting in a garden and they love to eat the fruit and veggies that they grow.” Another enjoyable aspect of her role is working in partnership with organizations and funders. CPF has recently undertaken a pilot project with the Georgia Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, putting Learning Gardens into 10 middle schools in DeKalb County and Atlanta Public Schools. These schools will be tracking measurable scientific and environmental outcomes of their gardens. CPF supports environmental education and learning gardens in K-12 schools in metro Atlanta, all 50 U.S. states and 22 other countries. The Foundation hosts an annual Benefit Gala, a charitable evening that raises funds for its programs promoting and supporting high-quality educational projects that enable children and youth to understand and appreciate their world through hands-on environmental stewardship projects that improve the environment in their schools and communities. Each year, CPF presents awards to individuals who are recognized for their extraordinary environmental stewardship and change-making. Based on the critically-acclaimed animated series Captain Planet and The Planeteers, CPF was co-founded in 1991 by Laura’s father, media mogul Ted Turner, and is a grant-making foundation that has distributed more than $2.5 million to fund more than 1,700 hands-on environmental education projects. While continuing that work, the Foundation Board charged executive director Leesa Carter with teasing out the best practices and curriculum that have been developed so as to provide those leadership resources to educators around the globe.
“People understand how critical it is for the next generation of decision-makers to be environmentally literate citizens who leverage information to support and protect the air, water and natural systems upon which all life depend.”

Sisters, Susan Johnson and Nancy Apatov
A place for everything Article Patricia Culpepper
I
was shopping for a new gym bag recently, and all I could find was big, ugly duffels or sack-like bags with no structure, no style and no organization. I wanted a bag to keep everything organized, neat and clean, a bag that would get me from the gym to work and that would make the start of my day a little less hectic. Sadly, I settled for the ugly, basic black, sack-like gym bag. It was with women like me in mind that Nancy Apatov of Buckhead and her sister, Susan Johnson, created Fivesse (pronounced FIVE-ESS), a line of fitness bags for style-conscious, busy working women. Both are working moms and dedicated exercisers so they knew firsthand of the need for a fitness bag designed specifically for women. They set out to create a functional bag that was organized and smart on the inside and beautiful on the outside. The name, Fivesse, is inspired by the Japanese philosophy, 5S, a methodology for defining and organizing a workspace for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. Nancy and Susan applied this philosophy in their quest to create the perfect woman’s gym bag. “We designed our bags based on the principle that there is a place for every-

A Passion for Farming Meet Mary Blackmon Article Mark Bracey

Mary grew up on her family’s farm in the Arkansas Delta but opted to leave it for college and to pursue her own career. She was a successful internet entrepreneur in Los Angeles in 2008 when she inherited the farm and had to go save, or lose, the land. Family and tradition won and she moved, immersing herself in the farming community, learning everything she could and hiring talented people to help her keep the farm successful. The 2014 Nissan Versa Note SV Family and Economy Come First Article Dennis Malcolm Byron | Photography Provided
T
here’s no mystery to it: A happy family will make life a lot easier. After reviewing the all-new 2014 Nissan Versa Note SV and enjoying all of its amenities, I believe this is the perfect automobile that says family comes first. From a college student wanting a reliable, gas-friendly source of transportation that still meets the demand for the latest in technology, to a growing family in need of a spacious cabin, the Versa Note SV is a sound choice. Already earning high esteem in the auto world including recognition as the top seller in its five-door segment last year, this hatchback has a more spacious (and quiet) cabin, gets a combined 35 miles per gallon, and is merciful on the wallet, starting at a mere $15,990 MSRP. And don’t worry, this hatchback may sound “cost-effective,” but it surely does not look like it. The new 2014 Versa has a more sleek exterior; possesses the headlights and boomerang-style taillights comparable to Nissan’s head-turning 370z street burner; a more sporty front grille; a rear spoiler; and an overall more aggressive appearance compared to last year’s more, shall we say, conservative predecessor. The strongly recommended SL ($1,700) and Technology ($800) Packages complete the Versa’s desirability. The SL provides a plethora of amenities including the Nissan Intelligent Key with a push-button starter; a rear-view monitor; SiriusXM satellite radio; the Divide-n-Hide adjustable floor for concealing valuables; 16” aluminum alloy wheels; and heated front seats to name a few. Techies will love activating their navigation and audio with the 5.8-inch color touch screen display; receiving NavTraffic and NavWeather via Google’s Send-To-Car compatibility; Bluetooth

Admittedly, the 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve engine and its four cylinders with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) will not win a NASCAR title any time soon, but the annual fuel cost of a mere $1,500 compared to other four-wheelers that triple that, will surely make the bank account more desirable to look at in the long run. THROUGH APRIL 30 IN THE GHETTO OF WARSAW: HEINRICH JÖST’S PHOTOGRAPHS THE LOVETT SCHOOL
Hotel owner Heinrich Jöst was a sergeant in the German army, stationed near Warsaw, who became curious about the corpses he had seen lying along the ghetto walls. So on his birthday, he made use of his free time and went into the ghetto with his camera. The amateur photographer shot several rolls of film in September 1941 and kept them for decades without showing them to anyone. In 1982, he gave the photographs to Stern magazine reporter Gunther Schwarberg. The Jerusalem Documentation Center Yad Vashem pronounced them a ‘’unique find and they certainly are—Jöst’s pictures belong to the scant number of existing photographs of the Warsaw ghetto, and are critically important documentation of its history. Parting Thoughts
As Healthy as a Cow Words Robin Jean Marie
I
think I live healthiest when I’m sick. That’s when I really take care of myself. I go to bed early, I drink lots of fluids, and I eat soup instead of sweets. I say “no,” and I delegate. When I’m operating in full gear, I pump myself up with caffeine and sugar and run around in a frenetic state, eking out the most of my “to do” list and arriving at places teeth grindingly close to appointment times. I stay at my desk, emailing till the midnight hour, as is my style. Basically, I spend my time doing things that land me in bed with a fever all over again. When will I learn? The truth is, I can exercise daily, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and snack on lettuce leaves till the cows come home, but I’m healthiest when I de-stress. When I’m sick, I lie in bed and read that book. I don’t pound my body, I pamper it. I loll around the house in my pjs with a box of Kleenex in hand, pronouncing tacit permission to be a slug. Why is it that the only time I allow myself to do that is when I’ve got a thermometer hanging out of my mouth? We hear a lot these days about what constitutes healthy living, namely diet and exercise. But the specifics keep changing. Each year ushers in a new best exercise: the StairMaster made way for kickboxing which made way for spinning. And every week we learn anew that the way we’ve been eating all of our

lives is wrong. The food pyramid that we memorized in grammar school is now a circle; the thick layer of carbs that used to form the very foundation of our daily diet has been voted off the island. But there’s a component to healthy living that is constant, a component that can be found resting in a hammock or laughing with a friend over lunch. It’s the element of relaxation. It’s the act of stopping long enough to breathe and appreciate, of gratefully chewing your cud, as it were. We don’t often take the time to unwind, but the benefits of doing so are significant. Because poor nutrition and lethargy are not the only obstacles to good health—stress is a major adversary. W. H. Davies writes about the antidote to stress in his poem, Leisure. In it, he asks the rhyming question, “What is this life, if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?” We can all join in the resounding reply: “A sickly, stressed-out one!” We know that we need to exercise, to eat more veggies and less carbs. But deep inside our primal bones, we also know that in order to be truly healthy, we need, every once in a while, to go and “…stand beneath the boughs and stare as long as sheep and cows.” So go forth and be healthy. And be a cow for a day. Robin Jean Marie can be reached at robinjm@earthlink.net.
