Livable Buckhead Building a Better, Greener Community in 2014 Article Denise Starling

t’s been a busy three years for Livable Buckhead (LBI), the nonprofit organization that was formed in 2011 to boost sustainability efforts throughout the community. Building on several major accomplishments in 2013, LBI isn’t slowing down the pace at all, reshaping Buckhead into a more walkable, livable community in even more tangible ways throughout 2014.

Parks and Trails

LBI’s most notable project, the PATH400 trail, will break ground this month. The 5.2-mile trail will connect Buckhead’s neighborhoods to parks, trails, schools, the Buckhead Business District, and ultimately to the Atlanta BeltLine. LBI secured more than $2 million for trail construction last year, and the first segment – between Lenox Rd. and Old Ivy Rd. – is expected to be completed later this year. Construction on the second phase – from Old Ivy Rd. to Wieuca Rd. – is also slated to begin in 2014. 14 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

PATH400 is the spine of the Buckhead Collection, a visionary plan to add more than 100 acres of parks and greenspace in Buckhead. LBI is leading the implementation of that plan, and in 2013 the organization closed on its first land purchase, a one-acre parcel that provides access to an additional seven acres that is now known as Mountain Way Common. Thanks to a $200,000 grant from Park Pride, this wooded expanse with Little Nancy Creek running through its middle will take shape as a neighborhood park and a key stop along PATH400 in the coming year. Recycling

For three years in a row, Buckhead residents have brought their outdated electronics, old cans of paint, unused medications and other items that are difficult to dispose to LBI’s EcoCollection event. Thanks to this event, more than 42 tons of potentially harmful waste items have been recycled or safely disposed. Go ahead and start stacking up your recyclables, but

be prepared to hang on to them for a bit longer than usual. The 2014 EcoCollection will be in November. Buckhead office buildings are also stepping up their recycling efforts, thanks to a program from LBI. Participating buildings are recycling approximately one third of the waste generated on their properties, and have reduced their waste management costs by 10 to 15 percent. The program will continue to grow in 2014, bringing in additional buildings and adding an educational component to increase employees’ awareness of the program and encourage even more recycling.

Energy Conservation

Last summer Livable Buckhead brought 41 area office buildings – half of the Buckhead office market - into the citywide Better Buildings Challenge. This is a major feat for Buckhead, building the business community’s reputation for sustainability and increasing Atlanta’s program participation by 50 percent. In the year ahead, LBI will work with participating buildings to identify steps they can take to reduce their energy consumption, with an eye toward a total reduction of 20 percent by 2020. Traffic and Air Quality

In 2014, LBI will continue promoting alternative transportation through BATMA, encouraging commuters to take advantage of transit, vanpooling and other options that reduce traffic and improve air quality. The buc shuttle will continue to provide fast, free and frequent service and in 2014 LBI will evaluate the system to determine what changes may be needed to make it even more useful for Buckhead residents and workers. There’s much more to come in 2014 – a major public art project, interactive historic exhibits, designation as an EcoDistrict - but LBI isn’t revealing everything just yet. Lindsay Masters Peterson makes do with a tiny little room off her bedroom as a workspace in her Buckhead home where she creates wearable art inspired for her company, TuLi Designs by the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. More Than a Market The Lure of Lucy’s

he started with a box of tomatoes at a gas station on the corner of Roswell and Wieuca. Kim Wilson, owner of Lucy’s Market in Buckhead, now sells produce and more in a large interior space in a shopping center on West Paces Ferry, and her business is thriving. Wilson has been a Buckhead resident for 30 years. She was in sales for the Atlanta Business Chronicle and raised her two children in Buckhead. After spending 20 years in the corporate world, she retired and turned her attention to gardening. She was good at it, too; Wilson’s hobby soon took over her backyard. When circumstances required her return to the work force, she was reluctant to don a business suit again. But opportunity presented itself with an opening at the corner gas station, and Wilson packed up her abundance of produce and began to sell it roadside. She chose to call her market “Lucy’s” in honor of her daughter and grandmother. She grew her business by getting to know her customers. After two years at the gas station, Wilson moved into a vacant space at the shopping center next to the St. Regis hotel, on West Paces Ferry. At the time, she was the only business there. It was a savvy move to a prime location. The center developed around her store two years ago, and now Lucy’s Market is comfortably placed in a section of Buckhead that is also home to 103 West and King & Duke. The market has evolved in the process. Outside the store, a

red painted crate stating “Welcome to Lucy’s Market” in white cursive lettering sets the scene. It’s rustic, original, and inviting--it says, this is more than your average farm stand. And indeed it is. Wilson calls her store “an eclectic gathering of things that I like.” Fortunately for everyone involved, she has impeccable taste. Lucy’s Market is the kind of place where someone could go in for apples and come out with a teakwood fir tree, a rooster made of straw and feathers, a jar of locally-canned pickles, and a package of the best brownies in town. It’s the kind of place where a person could circle the store five times and, on each time around, discover something new. The market’s produce is featured on a large wooden table in the front of the store, where baskets filled with fruits and vegetables are displayed. The ambience of Lucy’s Market changes with the seasons. October is all about pumpkins and gourds; November ushers in grand cornucopias and wreaths. In December, wreaths, bows, and holiday decor take center stage, and throughout the winter, firewood and bundles of birch logs fill the store. Spring and summer bring flowers, Easter bunny topiaries, Memorial Day and Independence Day flags, and the freshest fruits and vegetables our region has to offer. Tucked into corners and atop tables throughout the market are metal birdhouses, rolls of distinctive wrapping paper, signature candles, and the absolute finest in locally made food. Wilson makes a point of providing quality products to her customers. She stocks what she calls her “Ten Terrific Foods”— items that she considers exceptional. There was a time when she sought vendors to supply such goods for her store; now she is approached by vendors all week long. Her customers trust that when a product is in her market, it’s going to be good. Foods that are made in Atlanta fill the shelves and the cooler of Lucy’s Market. The market features local items such as Saint Rita’s pound cakes, The Hungry Peach truffle brownies, Pine Street Market

bacon, NaturAlmond Butter, Woodhaven Plantation honey, Bobby Lee’s Best Ever Cheddar Cheese, and Diana’s Specialties salmon and trout. Vendors from Roswell and Buckhead supply prepared meals. Wilson also uses the items in her store to make gift baskets. She custom-fills wicker farm baskets with selected products and personalizes them with hand-painted handles. The baskets have become hugely popular at Christmastime, especially for use as corporate gifts. Wilson donates her gracious baskets to charity auctions for local schools and organizations such as the Shepard Center. In addition, she donates overflow produce to Second Helping of Atlanta, which supplies food to homeless shelters. This March will mark the fifth anniversary of Lucy’s Market, and Wilson will hold a customer appreciation week, beginning March 10th, to celebrate. What started at a gas station has now become a passion for

Kim Wilson. She loves going to work; she loves getting to know her customers. Manager Sharon Lackey echoes that sentiment. “Everyone’s so happy here,” she says. “It’s a stress free, pleasant place to work. n the spring of 2010, usually dynamic Atlantan Amy Tippins found herself exhausted, reflective, and dreaming of change. Her job in the financial services industry had her traveling extensively and while she admits she made a great living, what Tippins actually craved in her heart was a more fulfilling life. Listening to her heart, her love of clothes and shopping coupled with her desire to help empower women dealing with scars, physical, mental and emotional, manifested in her fashion company RockScar Designs. After receiving a liver transplant in 1993, Tippins found that she felt personally affected by her own physical scar, and wanted to be an ambassador for strength and confidence through her own scar experience and those of others. Working with talented artists, also members of the transplant community, Tippins creates clothing pieces with powerful, inspiring messages including, "Scars R Sexy" (which is trademarked by Tippins), and "Show me yours. I'll show you mine." While every design and individual piece bears a part of her, a huge component of her vision of expansion involves putting others first. "I had to learn to take myself out of it to a certain extent,” she shares. “My line seems to really resonate with college kids and women over the age of 38. I have to think in terms of what they want to wear.” Tippins relishes all aspects of her business from educating herself about fabric quality to scouting the perfect new retail outlets to offer her stylish wares. RockScar Designs’ pieces are ‘currently in a handful of boutiques across the US and are sold online. Now we’re in the Atlanta Apparel Mart and it’s a huge new audience for us.’ Her bestselling item for fall/ winter 2013 and she predicts into spring 2014, is her Scars R Sexy Fashion Crop Top. “I love wearing it with a higher waist pant but younger girls wear it with low-rise bottoms. I would have when I was 25!” she says with a smile. Volunteering and mentoring women, teens and children in the transplant community is another endeavor close to Tippins’ heart. At the Transplant Teen Camp Retreat hosted at Camp Twin Lakes, she helps facilitate education sessions where teens are taught life skills including budgeting and the importance of safe sex. She knows the significance of offering support and guidance to young people navigating life with a transplant. “No one was there to help me with that sort of thing when

I was going through it; so it’s a joy for me to share tips and encouragement with them,” says Tippins. Camp Independence and Second Chance Family Camp also benefit from Tippins’ time and expertise. The RockScar Designs company itself serves as a platform to support women, with an open invitation on their Facebook page to share their stories and feelings about any of their scars, visible or not. Her blog, located on the website, also offers a safe haven; Tippins writes posts sharing others stories with their permission and sometimes has guest bloggers share their own personal experiences. The accounts, often emotional and always heartfelt, move Tippins daily. “I feel like it’s a special place for women, where I take their heartache with me.” The future looks bright for Tippins as she continues to expand her clothing line with new artistic designs and color palettes fostering the ability for boutiques to customize the line for their specific clientele. She expects the biggest growth in Atlanta, Miami and New York. Who knows which city she may rock next with her endearing message of empowerment? Rock on, Amy. Rock on.

arbaro Ponce’s journey to small business ownership started more than 40 years ago—in Cuba. Before founding what is now a successful Atlanta home restoration, remodeling and home improvement company, Barbaro was a child whose poor health prevented him from living the life that other children enjoyed. The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) is a 22-day cinematic exploration of Jewish life, culture and history. Seeking to use the power of film to both entertain and educate, AJFF challenges conventional perspectives on complex and challenging issues facing both the Jewish and global communities. Founded in 2000, AJFF ranks as the largest film festival in Atlanta, and second largest Jewish film festival in the United States, having attracted an audience of more than 30,000 moviegoers in 2012. This year, the festival will feature an international collection of 71 narrative and documentary films that explore the Jewish experience. Screenings are supplemented by guest appearances with filmmakers, actors, authors, academics and other expert speakers. AJFF.org

Located in one of the most distinctive historic properties in Atlanta, this event promises to become one of the premier partnerships of art institutions in the area. It is a festival for Artists by Artists, letting the artist have a voice in the creation and operations of the festival. This event will feature approximately 86 painters, photographers, sculptors, metalwork, glass artists, jewelers and more!
