“I want to first start by saying that Atlanta Dental Spa has the very best customer service from the knowledgeable staff to the warm bubbly personalities greeting you at the front desk. I came in for a cleaning at Atlanta Dental Spa–and I have extreme anxiety when it comes to the dentist–and all of my fears were diminished with the warm and comforting personalities of the dental hygienist and her assistant. They offered me a warm neck pillow and a paraffin wax hand treatment. My hygienist was extremely knowledgeable and she educated me on so many things involving my teeth and gums (for a moment I thought she was the dentist!) I was amazed by the thoroughness of the dental hygienist during the cleaning. That was the best cleaning I'I've ever had. After having my teeth cleaned, I met the doctor and he was wonderful; he explained my treatment plan to me and answered all of my questions. I would recommend Atlanta Dental Spa to everyone. They are the best!” -Brea, Atlanta Dental Spa cosmetic and oral wellness patient

Fresh Harvest and Thrive The fine folks at Fresh Harvest have a new relationship with their caffeinated friends at Thrive Farmers Coffee. "Sharing a cup of coffee with Matt at Thrive was more like friends talking about common goals than businesses looking to move some product,” said Zac Harrison at Fresh Harvest. Fresh Harvest, a company that partners with local farmers and delivers their produce to homes and offices, and Thrive Farmers Coffee from right here in Atlanta share a common desire to provide "fairer" trade for farmers. Said Fresh Harvest, “Yeah, we talk to guys that grow turnips and Thrive talks to guys that grow coffee, but our goal is the same. That is why we are excited to be teaming up to bring Atlanta great coffee and great produce with great purpose." Seuss Celebration Few authors are better known than Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss. Yet, to this day, his Secret Art and his fantastical Hat Collection are virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Ted Geisel created paintings and collected hats which he secreted away in a hidden closet at the Dr. Seuss Estate. This is the first time ever that Dr. Seuss’s hats have ever traveled outside his home. In honor of the 75th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s second book, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, a special Hats Off to Dr. Seuss! Exhibition has been mounted that combines these two secret collections. Audrey S. Geisel, the widow of Dr. Seuss, has generously opened up the Estate’s legendary “hat closet” to allow the

public a peek at Dr. Seuss’s hat collection. See it at Ann Jackson Gallery, February 1-16. 932 Canton St, Roswell. AnnJacksonGallery.com.

Livable Buckhead Building a Better, Greener Community in 2014 Article Denise Starling

I

t’s been a busy three years for Livable Buckhead (LBI), the nonprofit organization that was formed in 2011 to boost sustainability efforts throughout the community. Building on several major accomplishments in 2013, LBI isn’t slowing down the pace at all, reshaping Buckhead into a more walkable, livable community in even more tangible ways throughout 2014.

Parks and Trails

LBI’s most notable project, the PATH400 trail, will break ground this month. The 5.2-mile trail will connect Buckhead’s neighborhoods to parks, trails, schools, the Buckhead Business District, and ultimately to the Atlanta BeltLine. LBI secured more than $2 million for trail construction last year, and the first segment – between Lenox Rd. and Old Ivy Rd. – is expected to be completed later this year. Construction on the second phase – from Old Ivy Rd. to Wieuca Rd. – is also slated to begin in 2014. 14 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

PATH400 is the spine of the Buckhead Collection, a visionary plan to add more than 100 acres of parks and greenspace in Buckhead. LBI is leading the implementation of that plan, and in 2013 the organization closed on its first land purchase, a one-acre parcel that provides access to an additional seven acres that is now known as Mountain Way Common. Thanks to a $200,000 grant from Park Pride, this wooded expanse with Little Nancy Creek running through its middle will take shape as a neighborhood park and a key stop along PATH400 in the coming year. Recycling

For three years in a row, Buckhead residents have brought their outdated electronics, old cans of paint, unused medications and other items that are difficult to dispose to LBI’s EcoCollection event. Thanks to this event, more than 42 tons of potentially harmful waste items have been recycled or safely disposed. Go ahead and start stacking up your recyclables, but

be prepared to hang on to them for a bit longer than usual. The 2014 EcoCollection will be in November. Buckhead office buildings are also stepping up their recycling efforts, thanks to a program from LBI. Participating buildings are recycling approximately one third of the waste generated on their properties, and have reduced their waste management costs by 10 to 15 percent. The program will continue to grow in 2014, bringing in additional buildings and adding an educational component to increase employees’ awareness of the program and encourage even more recycling.

Energy Conservation

Last summer Livable Buckhead brought 41 area office buildings – half of the Buckhead office market - into the citywide Better Buildings Challenge. This is a major feat for Buckhead, building the business community’s reputation for sustainability and increasing Atlanta’s program participation by 50 percent. In the year ahead, LBI will work with participating buildings to identify steps they can take to reduce their energy consumption, with an eye toward a total reduction of 20 percent by 2020. Traffic and Air Quality

In 2014, LBI will continue promoting alternative transportation through BATMA, encouraging commuters to take advantage of transit, vanpooling and other options that reduce traffic and improve air quality. The buc shuttle will continue to provide fast, free and frequent service and in 2014 LBI will evaluate the system to determine what changes may be needed to make it even more useful for Buckhead residents and workers. There’s much more to come in 2014 – a major public art project, interactive historic exhibits, designation as an EcoDistrict - but LBI isn’t revealing everything just yet. Keep up with Livable Buckhead on Facebook or the web to make sure you don’t miss a thing. LivableBuckhead.org

he old adage “If you want to find your heart’s desire, start looking in your own backyard,” was never proven to be more true than with the designs and products made in Atlanta that make us look and feel beautiful. When you add to that the fact that the people making successes of the businesses highlighted in this issue are beautiful themselves, you have a winning combination. We thought you would enjoy learning about these people, their passions and some of the things that are made in Atlanta that might just be your heart’s desire. TuLi Designs

The strength to rise above personal adversity was the driving force behind Sally Larsen’s founding of Sally B’s Skin Yummies. Diagnosed at a young age with bone cancer, Sally realized that business and good health could intersect in a very meaningful way. With her health issues, even a simple scratch would necessitate her taking antibiotics, forcing her to examine closely how she cared for her body. Larsen began researching cosmetic chemistry and experimenting with new recipes for organic skin care products to enhance well-being. Hoping to prove that luxury and beauty need not be sacrificed when adopting a healthy personal care regime, Sally launched Sally B’s Skin Yummies in 2005. Judging by the famous names, including Dr. Oz, Drew Barrymore, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn who discovered Sally B’s recently, she has hit her mark. Larsen advises that we are exposed to chemical toxins every day which can lead to a variety of health issues and urges us to incorporate non-toxic practices into daily life. Visit Sally’s Buckhead location on Miami Circle to learn more about her “good for you” make up and skin care products and pick up your favorites to take home. Her products can also be found at SallyBSkinYummies.com.

Lindsay Masters Peterson makes do with a tiny little room off her bedroom as a workspace in her Buckhead home where she creates wearable art inspired for her company, TuLi Designs by the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. A graduate of the University of Alabama in Fashion/Textiles, Peterson is well versed in the basics of her art form. Trips to Turkey to bring back handicrafts from Turkish locals eventually convinced Lindsay that she wanted to do more. Her love for the mosaics in the old palaces and especially the gorgeous tulips in Turkey inspired TuLi Designs, which she founded in 2012. Peterson, an Atlanta resident of five years, markets her TuLi scarf creations through TuliDesigns.com for wearers who seek meaning and authenticity in life.

Former film producer turned jewelry designer Lee Wiser McIntosh of Katura Design of Buckhead believes jewelry should draw its meaning from the woman wearing it. Specializing in pearl designs set in white, yellow or rose gold, Lee allows the nuances of each individual pearl to dictate the setting. She uses her artist’s eye to evaluate the compatibility of a pearl with another equally precious gem. Although she has a sketch or design brief, Lee readily admits she lets the pearls or stones tell her where she should go with them. Lee often sits among thousands of pearls, evaluating each one and asking herself how it would relate to diamonds or tourmaline; does it want to be set in 18K yellow gold or a soft rose gold? Find her dazzling creations at Galleries of Peachtree Hills or online at KaturaDesign.com.

Designer Elizabeth Newton is a fifth generation Atlantan and graduate of the University of Georgia who became the mother of triplet girls and, two years later, a little boy. Having four children in two and a half years changed Elizabeth’s focus from the corporate world of commercial design to the design and creation of art that held meaning for her and others. She knew she had reached her goal when customers battling breast cancer told her that wearing her jewelry designs made them feel beautiful. Teaming with Vicky Abrahamsson in 2012 to create an e-commerce business outlet for her designs, Elizabeth’s classic, current and timeless designs can be found at ENewtonDesign.com. In 2013, Enewton Design was chosen twice as an emerging designer at the Atlanta Apparel Market. Enewton Design pieces can also be found at Poppy’s, Brookhaven Home, Huff Harrington, Marguerites, C’est Moi and Ivy Lane in Atlanta. Atlanta is a sophisticated, metropolitan city where opportunities to find your heart’s desire abound. It’s good to know that some of what we find here includes handcrafted designs and stunning discoveries that are made in Atlanta.

More Than a Market The Lure of Lucy’s

S

Article Robin Jean Marie | Photography Kathryn McCrary

he started with a box of tomatoes at a gas station on the corner of Roswell and Wieuca. Kim Wilson, owner of Lucy’s Market in Buckhead, now sells produce and more in a large interior space in a shopping center on West Paces Ferry, and her business is thriving. Wilson has been a Buckhead resident for 30 years. She was in sales for the Atlanta Business Chronicle and raised her two children in Buckhead. After spending 20 years in the corporate world, she retired and turned her attention to gardening. She was good at it, too; Wilson’s hobby soon took over her backyard. When circumstances required her return to the work force, she was reluctant to don a business suit again. But opportunity presented itself with an opening at the corner gas station, and Wilson packed up her abundance of produce and began to sell it roadside. She chose to call her market “Lucy’s” in honor of her daughter and grandmother. She grew her business by getting to know her customers. After two years at the gas station, Wilson moved into a vacant space at the shopping center next to the St. Regis hotel, on West Paces Ferry. At the time, she was the only business there. It was a savvy move to a prime location. The center developed around her store two years ago, and now Lucy’s Market is comfortably placed in a section of Buckhead that is also home to 103 West and King & Duke. The market has evolved in the process. Outside the store, a

18 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

red painted crate stating “Welcome to Lucy’s Market” in white cursive lettering sets the scene. It’s rustic, original, and inviting--it says, this is more than your average farm stand. And indeed it is. Wilson calls her store “an eclectic gathering of things that I like.” Fortunately for everyone involved, she has impeccable taste. Lucy’s Market is the kind of place where someone could go in for apples and come out with a teakwood fir tree, a rooster made of straw and feathers, a jar of locally-canned pickles, and a package of the best brownies in town. It’s the kind of place where a person could circle the store five times and, on each time around, discover something new. The market’s produce is featured on a large wooden table in the front of the store, where baskets filled with fruits and vegetables are displayed. The ambience of Lucy’s Market changes with the seasons. October is all about pumpkins and gourds; November ushers in grand cornucopias and wreaths. In December, wreaths, bows, and holiday decor take center stage, and throughout the winter, firewood and bundles of birch logs fill the store. Spring and summer bring flowers, Easter bunny topiaries, Memorial Day and Independence Day flags, and the freshest fruits and vegetables our region has to offer. Tucked into corners and atop tables throughout the market are metal birdhouses, rolls of distinctive wrapping paper, signature candles, and the absolute finest in locally made food. Wilson makes a point of providing quality products to her customers. She stocks what she calls her “Ten Terrific Foods”— items that she considers exceptional. There was a time when she sought vendors to supply such goods for her store; now she is approached by vendors all week long. Her customers trust that when a product is in her market, it’s going to be good. Foods that are made in Atlanta fill the shelves and the cooler of Lucy’s Market. The market features local items such as Saint Rita’s pound cakes, The Hungry Peach truffle brownies, Pine Street Market

bacon, NaturAlmond Butter, Woodhaven Plantation honey, Bobby Lee’s Best Ever Cheddar Cheese, and Diana’s Specialties salmon and trout. Vendors from Roswell and Buckhead supply prepared meals. Wilson also uses the items in her store to make gift baskets. She custom-fills wicker farm baskets with selected products and personalizes them with hand-painted handles. The baskets have become hugely popular at Christmastime, especially for use as corporate gifts. Wilson donates her gracious baskets to charity auctions for local schools and organizations such as the Shepard Center. In addition, she donates overflow produce to Second Helping of Atlanta, which supplies food to homeless shelters. This March will mark the fifth anniversary of Lucy’s Market, and Wilson will hold a customer appreciation week, beginning March 10th, to celebrate. What started at a gas station has now become a passion for

Kim Wilson. She loves going to work; she loves getting to know her customers. mall businesses can be considered the backbone of the U.S. economy, accounting for about half of all private-sector jobs and 65 percent of new jobs created in the past 17 years. And in Georgia they represent 97.7 percent of all employers, employing 44.8 percent of the private-sector labor force. Small is good! Research has shown that for every $100 spent at a locally owned store, $45 remains in the local economy, compared with about $13 per $100 spent at a big box store. Local businesses provide a unique value to their communities that goes beyond the goods they offer: charitable endeavors, youth sports team sponsorships, quality shopping experiences — all while preserving an integral communal phenomenon known as human interaction. Here are a few businesses you should check out and support, right here near home:

AtlantaFresh Artisan Creamery AtlantaFresh turns their daily delivery of hormone-free and antibiotic-free milk from humanely treated, fully pastured and grass fed cows, into fresh Greek yogurt. Made by hand in small batches, AtlantaFresh uses only natural ingredients with no chemicals or preservatives. Available at most Whole Foods and Kroger. AtlantaFresh.com

Burly Bakers Owner Bill Armstrong's motto is “If you’re gonna be bad, it better be good.” Burly Bakers whips up some of the most delectable gourmet bars, cookies and pies you will ever have the privilege of tasting, like Blackberry Shortbread Bars or the Gooey Black Bottom Praline Brownies that have been turning saints into sinners one dozen at a time. This thriving bakery offers mail order and local delivery, with plans to establish a small retail space this year. BurlyBakers.com

Mama Bath + Body Emilie Sennebogen formulates, manufactures, pours and packages every batch of her artisan body products on location using only pure plant-based essential oils - no synthetic fragrances ever and all products are 100% natural (with the exception of lotions, which contain a synthetic preservative, so they are 95% natural.) One of her hottest sellers are her "Neighborhood Soaps" featuring some very recognizable Atlanta neighborhood names. Mama is so loved that Sennebogen will be opening another retail store this year. Shop now at the Atlanta History Center and The Four Seasons Spa. LoveYourMama.com

Amy Tippins

Teaching you to Rock your Scar Like a Star Article Laura Carson Miller

I

n the spring of 2010, usually dynamic Atlantan Amy Tippins found herself exhausted, reflective, and dreaming of change. Her job in the financial services industry had her traveling extensively and while she admits she made a great living, what Tippins actually craved in her heart was a more fulfilling life. Listening to her heart, her love of clothes and shopping coupled with her desire to help empower women dealing with scars, physical, mental and emotional, manifested in her fashion company RockScar Designs. After receiving a liver transplant in 1993, Tippins found that she felt personally affected by her own physical scar, and wanted to be an ambassador for strength and confidence through her own scar experience and those of others. Working with talented artists, also members of the transplant community, Tippins creates clothing pieces with powerful, inspiring messages including, "Scars R Sexy" (which is trademarked by Tippins), and "Show me yours. I'll show you mine." While every design and individual piece bears a part of her, a huge component of her vision of expansion involves putting others first. "I had to learn to take myself out of it to a certain extent,” she shares. “My line seems to really resonate with college kids and women over the age of 38. I have to think in terms of what they want to wear.” Tippins relishes all aspects of her business from educating herself about fabric quality to scouting the perfect new retail outlets to offer her stylish wares. RockScar Designs’ pieces are ‘currently in a handful of boutiques across the US and are sold online. Now we’re in the Atlanta Apparel Mart and it’s a huge new audience for us.’ Her bestselling item for fall/ winter 2013 and she predicts into spring 2014, is her Scars R Sexy Fashion Crop Top. “I love wearing it with a higher waist pant but younger girls wear it with low-rise bottoms. I would have when I was 25!” she says with a smile. Volunteering and mentoring women, teens and children in the transplant community is another endeavor close to Tippins’ heart. At the Transplant Teen Camp Retreat hosted at Camp Twin Lakes, she helps facilitate education sessions where teens are taught life skills including budgeting and the importance of safe sex. She knows the significance of offering support and guidance to young people navigating life with a transplant. “No one was there to help me with that sort of thing when

22 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

I was going through it; so it’s a joy for me to share tips and encouragement with them,” says Tippins. Camp Independence and Second Chance Family Camp also benefit from Tippins’ time and expertise. The RockScar Designs company itself serves as a platform to support women, with an open invitation on their Facebook page to share their stories and feelings about any of their scars, visible or not. Her blog, located on the website, also offers a safe haven; Tippins writes posts sharing others stories with their permission and sometimes has guest bloggers share their own personal experiences. The accounts, often emotional and always heartfelt, move Tippins daily. “I feel like it’s a special place for women, where I take their heartache with me.” The future looks bright for Tippins as she continues to expand her clothing line with new artistic designs and color palettes fostering the ability for boutiques to customize the line for their specific clientele. She expects the biggest growth in Atlanta, Miami and New York. Who knows which city she may rock next with her endearing message of empowerment? Rock on, Amy. Rock on.

arbaro Ponce’s journey to small business ownership started more than 40 years ago—in Cuba. Before founding what is now a successful Atlanta home restoration, remodeling and home improvement company, Barbaro was a child whose poor health prevented him from living the life that other children enjoyed. Without a very bright future ahead of him, Barbaro’s aunts and uncles, who had already immigrated to Atlanta, called upon then-Governor Jimmy Carter to help. When Governor Carter came calling, people answered. In short time, Carter had arranged for Ponce and his family to come to the United States—and for Barbaro to undergo rehabilitation therapy at Children’s at Scottish Rite Pediatric Hospital. With the benefit of high-quality health care, Barbaro was set on a path of independence and success. Barbaro would go on to graduate from Christ the King School, as well as St. Pius X Catholic High School, and pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. After building a long and successful career at Atlanta-area commercial and residential architecture and design firms, Barbaro still desired more—he wanted to make a difference, and he wanted to help people. 24 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

“I love houses. Working for architecture firms, I love design, I love challenges, making houses accessible—but so it feels like a home. I love designing spaces and fulfilling whatever needs people have.” And there was the inspiration for Barbaro’s business: Adapted Living Spaces/ALS Contracting. A full-service, design and build, remodeling and construction company established in 2001 to offer home modifications specifically for the elderly and physically challenged, including ramp services, expansion of doorways, grab bar installation, accessible bathrooms, and much more. “The basis of my company,” says Barbaro, “was really to adapt residential spaces to the homeowner—just taking that space and making it comfortable for them.” Although his firm services all of Atlanta—including Buckhead, Dunwoody, Virginia-Highlands, Marietta, and Roswell, Barbaro loves older neighborhoods and homes with a great deal of character. “I enjoy working with that architecture and keeping the historical look. I also like the diversity of different neighborhoods—you can have a Victorian home in one place and a modern home somewhere else.” For Adapted Living Spaces, customer service is very important: “We want to make

sure that our customers know we are doing the work for them. My design skills are to adapt the space for them and for their needs.” Taking projects from idea to design to reality, Adapted Living Spaces offers high quality workmanship and complete turnkey construction. Specializing in the renovation of bathrooms, kitchens, finished basements and home additions, as well as the restoration of fire/water/storm damage homes and new construction, ALS takes its work personally: “It is our goal to offer quality design services at affordable prices to residents of the greater Atlanta community.” Barbaro, who lives in Woodland Hills near Buckhead with his wife, enjoys living in Atlanta just as much as working in the city. He and his wife enjoy art festivals at Piedmont Park, sampling ethnic foods all over the city, visiting Zoo Atlanta, and shooting the occasional air rifle—Barbaro even participated in the 1996 Paralympics in the air rifle competition. For this Renaissance man, and real estate agent, people are what motivate him to stay as busy as he does: “I enjoy meeting all different types of people. When I worked in architecture firms, I was always behind a desk creating drawings. When I had interactions with clients, I always enjoyed it. I like meeting people and getting to know their needs so I can design and create the space. Each person has a special uniqueness and need—I like working together with them, getting to know them. I am a people person.”

The 2013 Range Rover HSE

We have driven numerous 2013 models, but the 2013 Range Rover HSE was our most luxurious of the year. We can’t wait to see what Range Rover has up its sleeve for 2014. article Dennis Malcolm Byron

T

here is no mystery that Range Rovers continue to be favorites for those fond of this SUV’s balancing act of having a posh interior, state-of-the art technology, sexy looks, muscular frame, and ability to take on virtually any outdoor terrain. The 2013 Range Rover with all the fixings, totaling a mere $96,195 with the HSE package ($82,650 base price), maintains this brand’s luster. Thanks to its powerful 5.0L 375 horsepower V8 engine (about 16 miles per gallon average); cloud-like ride (Enhanced Electronic Air Suspension); incredible premium Meridian 825-watt, 19-speaker surround sound system; plush Oxford leather seats with cooling and heating properties, plus front seat massage (Climate Comfort Package); and auto surround camera system on a 12.3-inch screen for full driver visibility, this is one of the favorites we have driven all year. But there were even more features that solidified this as the most luxurious SUV we have tested in 2013. The doors close on their own after a light push which is termed the Soft Door Close feature; Automatic Load Leveling that enables the truck

26 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

to rise and lower depending on the driving situation; there is a Triple-Zone automatic climate control system; cold nights are combated with a heated front windshield (defrost lines are virtually invisible); and its signature Terrain Response System helps drivers effortlessly conquer snow, mud, sand, and extremely rocky roads. For the perfect garnish to this delectable dish of automotive excellence, owners will forever enjoy the power-folding side

mirrors brandishing a Range Rover hologram on the ground when the vehicle is remotely unlocked (something like a Batman signal). What more would you want out of a luxury SUV? Besides maybe upgrading your sound system to its theater-like 1700watt, 29-speaker Meridian sound system for $4,450…we couldn’t come up with anything either. Happy New Year!

Parting Thoughts

Memories. Made in Atlanta Words Robin Jean Marie

I

’ve been circling the Perimeter since the first grade. When I was six, my family moved to metro Atlanta and settled in DeKalb County. I spent my childhood in and around the capital city, and as I grew into adulthood, I stayed. My memories are wisps of things distinctly Atlantan, foggy fragments of the places that formed me. We lived in the kind of neighborhood where kids joined the swim team and had costume contests for Halloween, where neighbors pitched in to help each other. I looked forward to trips to South DeKalb Mall with my mom because she’d buy us a delicious chicken sandwich with a pickle on it. It came from a place called Chick-fil-A. Sometimes we’d go to the Old Hickory House, where I’d have a bowl of hot and tangy Brunswick stew. At Christmastime, my parents would take our family to Rich’s department store, where my siblings and I would experience the thrill of riding the Pink Pig, delighting particularly in the wondrous moment that Priscilla the Pig would travel outside to the rooftop of the building. After the ride, we would have the singular pleasure of buying gifts for our parents all by ourselves at Santa’s Secret Shop. For family outings, we would visit Grant Park Zoo and the Cyclorama. We would walk the circumference of the Cyclorama building, guided by flood lights on the painting as the narration described the next scene of the Battle of Atlanta. When guests came, we’d take them to Stone Mountain Park for a picnic and ca-

34 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | January 2014

ble car ride to the mountaintop. Later, when I was in high school, Stone Mountain would be the student hangout spot. As a graduate student at Emory, I fell in love---with Everybody’s in Emory Village. The landmark building with its signature red brick and white marble façade was the most memorable place for the most memorable, thick and chewy crusted, topping-heavy pizza I’d ever eat. I had a job and an apartment in Cobb County and friends who lived in-town. I frequented Piedmont Park for concerts and art festivals. I bought season tickets to the Alliance Theater. I dressed up as I-285 for Halloween. I ate fondue at Dante’s Down the Hatch in Underground Atlanta. I gazed up at the star-speckled ceiling of the Fox Theater before a show. I visited Callanwolde for the Olde Christmas Storytelling Festivals. I jogged along the Chattahoochee. I chose from the wall of beer at the original Taco Mac’s. Now I’m in Dunwoody, with a family of my own. Some of my favorite Atlanta places are gone, and some have changed. But I live in a neighborhood that has a swim team and garden club and costume contests on Halloween, one where women make meals for a sick neighbor. My family visits Stone Mountain and the Fox theatre; we celebrated special occasions at Dante’s. I’ve come full circle. And I realize that my childhood, my adulthood, and some of my fondest memories…were all made in Atlanta. Robin Jean Marie can be reached at robinjm@earthlink.net
