hen our photographer, Keith Cordell, and I sat on the lovely patio at Seven Lamps at Shops Around Lenox in Buckhead, preparing the shoot for this month’s feature, Giving Men, we watched a parade of men go by and noticed there is a real Buckhead style. It’s confidence. It’s men wearing casual patterned jackets over pressed dress shirts. It’s jeans and pastel gingham. It’s still suspenders and wing tips. Even at the end of a work day, men appeared pleased with themselves and relaxed (maybe it was because they were headed into a welcoming bar where they could order something like a Crimson Eagle: Smoked Four Roses Bourbon, fig-infused red wine honey, lemon and carbonated while shaken). We like that men are subscribing to their own fashion template, whatever that may be. Well done, guys! And, well done to the three men we profile who make volunteering a priority and are introduced to you this month. In case you, or the man in your life could use a shot of fashion confidence (though we love you just the way you are), consider visiting our friends at Buckhead Haberdashery where they will make you a custom jacket, suit or tuxedo or just sit you down for a chat about life. Read about them on page 18.

AUTHOR SPEAKS Conor Grennan, author of the New York Times bestseller Little Princes: One Man’s Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal presented the Program for Global Citizenship lecture recently at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. Grennan’s book, described by the Christian Science Monitor as “a wildly emotional thrill ride,” grew out of the author’s three-month stay in war-torn Nepal in 2004, working at the Little Princes Children’s Home. There, he discovered children who were not orphans but rather trafficked children. The experience inspired Grennan’s book, and also prompted the author to become an international children’s rights advocate and to found Next Generation Nepal, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reconnecting trafficked children with their families in post-war Nepal. To date, Grennan has helped to reconnect some 300 children with their families.

GIVE GORGEOUS Rumson Gifts & Home Furnishings is a favorite source for gift baskets here in Buckhead, and now the boutique is representing the works of 25-year-old Hutton Snellings. “I was drawn immediately to Hutton’s work,” says Catherine McGahan owner of Rumson Gifts & Home Furnishings. “I am thrilled to have her calming and beautiful pieces on display and available for purchase.” Typically working with acrylics as well as oils on canvas, she also enjoys utilizing charcoals, pastels and paper. Snellings’ contemporary abstract works are known to evoke emotion in the many that view them. Starting at $1,500, each piece of art takes anywhere from three to four weeks to complete. She is a graduate of The Lovett School and The University of Mississippi. The baskets are still the star at Rumson, including the one pictured, great for a guy or as a hostess gift. 458 East Paces Ferry Road. RumsonGifts.com. 12 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2014

Brookhaven Soccer Fans Want You To “Keep Kickin!” ATLANTA SOCCERFEST SET FOR JUNE 22 IN BROOKHAVEN ARTICLE HELEN GREBE

T

he state of Georgia has throngs of soccer fans, one of which is Anthony Catalano, former Division 1 soccer player at Elon University and professional soccer player for almost four years. Catalano, known for his fancy footwork on the field, received game-changing news three years ago when he was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Winners don’t claim defeat, so Catalano approached his diagnosis with the same fervor he approached opponents on the soccer field, and beat the disease. “Keep Kickin!” was born. “Keep Kickin’ was started shortly after my fight against non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2011,” explains Catalano. “After completing treatments to fight the cancer and being given a clean bill of health, my focus was to help the next person. The message of Keep

14 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2014

Kickin’ was to show people that no matter the odds, if you can ‘Keep Kickin’ and fighting for what you believe in, then you give yourself the opportunity for a winning outcome.” “Keep Kickin’ has raised significant dollars to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Enter Atlanta Soccerfest, founded in 2010 by Catalano’s cousin and his wife, Craig and Zoe Fanti. Soccerfest originated in Cabbagetown as a free, outdoor, day-long festival that united Georgia World Cup soccer fans in one place to embrace the energy of the World Cup Games. Games were broadcast outdoors to over 2500 fans. This year Atlanta’s second annual Soccerfest, led again by the Fanti Family, will take place on Sunday, June 22, in Brookhaven Park and benefits Catalano’s “Keep Kickin” foundation (which will give a portion of the

proceeds to LLS). Catalano credits both the Fanti Family and John ( Jay) Ernst for playing an instrumental part in making this year’s festival happen. “John is a Brookhaven resident and really helped us get off the ground,” emphasizes Catalano. “He’s the reason this is taking place in Brookhaven and we’re grateful.” In addition, a committee of volunteers that include Ernst, Catalano, Catalano’s girlfriend Lauren Heflin and other Atlanta residents has dedicated the past six months to planning the festival. The committee’s aim for this year’s Soccerfest is to reach 5,000 in attendance. Soccerfest, which has its own Twitter handle, Facebook page and website, is a day- long festival featuring a 5K Race and Fun Run in the morning, soccer competitions for kids of all ages, and food and beer from some of Atlanta’s best food trucks and street vendors. The Atlanta Silverbacks, Atlanta’s pro-team will be on hand to provide demonstrations. All World Cup games played that day will be viewed on a giant outdoor screen, which will culminate with USA vs. Portugal at 6 p.m. Catalano is quick to credit his partners and sponsors for enabling the festival to take place. “Soccerfest is free to attend and this is possible because the proceeds from the 5K and alcohol sales provided by Sweetwater Brewing Company will benefit Keep Kickin,” he says. “It’s important to note that our Fun Run proceeds go back to Brookhaven schools, supporting our community. It’s a win-win when you attend Soccerfest and we couldn’t have made it possible without our dedicated and generous partners and sponsors.” Finally, Catalano drives home the final goal of the event (pun intended). “Come out with your friends and family and have fun,” he says. “Watch the World Cup games. Eat and drink and support a good cause. We will all kick it, together.”

For the Love of Sauce GET TO KNOW BUCKHEAD’S FIREBUD BRANDS ARTICLE LAURA CARSON MILLER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

F

or native Atlantan and Buckhead resident Michael McCord, all roads happily lead to barbecue. After graduating from Lovett in 2001, it was off to college, and his signature sauce, called Slap, was born out the need for the perfect accompaniment to the whole hog he and his buddies were roasting for a huge college tailgate party. How dare some people say college is a waste of time or money! Fast forward to the present, when Firebud Brand’s Slap and Salvation Sauces are carried in four Savi Markets, eight metro Whole Foods, five Cook’s Warehouse locations, Lucy’s Market, The Viking Store, Nuts N’ Berries and Onward Reserve. The company’s sauce products, Slap Sauce and Alabama Salvation Sauce, are distinctively different while being equally delicious. “We, as Atlantans, are not known for a specific type of barbecue,” McCord offers. “This is probably due to the high number of transplants and our “too busy to care” mind set. We are able to pick and choose from the best and whatever we enjoy the most. The barbecue purists out there have their own opinions and will gladly share theirs with you. They are passionate and I respect that. Any tradition as strong as barbecue will have its rivalries. It’s the same in any arena: Coke-Pepsi beverages, Auburn-Alabama football, Apple-Android operating systems or Home Depot-Lowes home improvement stores. I for one am just glad we have options.”

16 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2014

McCord says the inspiration for Slap Sauce was to combine his two favorite barbecue sauces: the Eastern North Carolina vinegar sauce and the South Carolina mustard. “I believe we have created the perfect hybrid of the two,” he says. “For Alabama Salvation Sauce, it was to keep going down this unique barbecue path and bring this regional north Alabama sauce to the masses. Everyone has a red sauce they prefer, some even make their own at home, but a mayonnaise-based sauce with fresh horseradish and lemon? It truly is one of a kind.” You won’t be surprised to learn that Firebud Brands products are award winning, too. “Receiving the 2014 Award of Excellence from the National Barbecue Association was awesome,” says a proud McCord. “It gave some validity to what we already knew: we have a quality product made with superior ingredients. With over 700 entrants this year, it was humbling and inspiring.” Writer’s note: These sauces are also fantastic on foods other than just barbecue! My husband loves Salvation Sauce with a juicy ribeye, and Slap Sauce is wonderful with fish. I marinate salmon in Slap Sauce, then shake on some Firebud Brands Body Buzz Rub, in stores May 1, grill and enjoy. Body Buzz Rub will truly amp up the flavor of a simple green salad as well; top with a splash of oil and vinegar. And Slap Sauce is equally awesome on a fish taco. Trust me. FirebudBrands.com

hen was the last time you had a suit shopping experience? If it didn’t involve your own tailor and a cocktail, chances are you have not had the custom experience offered at Buckhead Haberdashery, a lifestyle store for men. This fine clothing store, in Buckhead on Lenox Road, specializes in ready-to-wear and custom suits, shirts, sport coats and accessories. “Philosophically, I believe men put themselves in clothing boxes. My job is to take them out and expose them to alternatives that help them look better and feel better.” –Miguel Wilson, Buckhead Haberdashery The boutique was founded on the principle that a man’s attire speaks volumes about his style and taste. Many features and details come standard, such as high-quality English and Italian fabrics, full canvas construction, working buttonholes, natural roll lapels, shirt grippers, 360-degree heel guards, custom linings, complete topstitching and top-quality buttons. Of course, this rare attention to detail is better seen, felt and worn than read on the page. Miguel Wilson has worked in tailored clothing for more than 20 years as a stylist and designer. He has dressed sports stars, politicians, CEOs and celebrity grooms. “My passion for fine clothing began at a young age by watching my father and grandfather dress,” Wilson says. “Philosophically, I believe men put themselves in clothing boxes. My job is to take them out and expose them to alternatives that help them look better and feel better. The ego of a man can sometimes be his biggest barrier to dressing well. They don’t recognize their limitations because they don’t know their potential...until they meet me.” To ensure the ultimate in client satisfaction, Buckhead Haberdashery offers three fits: • Regular – a standard, American-style fit; • Modern – a slimmer fit in the waist, armholes, knee and bottom; and • Slim Fit – a European-style fit with a slimmer silhouette throughout the body that includes deeper and slimmer armholes. The ultimate goal at Buckhead Haberdashery is for clients to leave the store with attire that “makes a statement without saying a word.” In order to accomplish this ambitious objective with each and every client, the custom tailoring process at Buckhead Haberdashery is a methodical one, and involves the following three steps: 1. Initial consultation – Tailors begin by understanding the client’s lifestyle, purpose of the suit, personal preferences, and then explain the available options and recommended products.

2. Measurements and fitting – Tailors take complete body measurements to achieve the best fitting suit possible, and utilize tryon garments to provide clients with a visual of finished product. 3. Final fitting – Tailors handle final adjustments as needed. In case you haven’t gathered by now, Buckhead Haberdashery is not a typical clothing store—the staff possesses an uncommon passion for great clothing and outstanding client service. More personal stylists than salespeople, the professionals of Buckhead Haberdashery offer advice that helps men look great for all occasions.

Meet David Felfoldi of Buckhead FAMILY: Wife, Jessica Felfoldi and one baby on the way

I founded SHERPA Global, a digital marketing and technology firm, when I was 18. I guide the online strategy behind notable organizations such as ADP, Spanx, Racetrac, and Gables. We’ve made a recent effort to focus our team’s talents on Atlanta’s non-profits and are proud to be working with the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, and the National Center of Civil and Human Rights. WHERE I GIVE: Since 2006 I have served on the board of Moving in the Spirit, a nationally-recognized youth development program in Atlanta, as chair of the Marketing and member of the Technology committees. I have a not-so-secret passion for dance and music, participated in a ballroom performance group in college, and I respect the work of their co-founder, Dana Lupton. The program’s transformative magic is crystal clear once you attend a performance and meet the students. Also, I’ve worked with 21st Century Leaders and the Alliance Theatre Advisory Board. as a daily inspiration in how a single person can better our community by applying their talents. She is a lawyer with Atlanta Legal Aid and advocates for Georgia’s low-income nursing home residents with disabilities to live in the community.

Meet Jeff Haber of Brookhaven FAMILY: Fiancee, Allison Ford DAY JOB: Agvictus Capital Management / Forest Investment Associates – 7 years; Timberland and agricultural asset management WHERE I GIVE: Fragile Kids Foundation; Secretary. The mission of the Fragile Kids Foundation is to help children with special needs and those who are medically fragile, and their families, by providing them with prescribed medical treatments that are not covered by government programs or private insurance. The foundation attempts to bridge the ever-growing gap between what health insurance and Medicaid will cover so they get the necessities to safely navigate their day-to-day living, thrive and reach rehabilitative goals. Many of us are fortunate enough that we and our families are to be able to accomplish the necessary task of everyday living. This blessing should not be taken lightly as there are numerous families with medically fragile children throughout the state of Georgia that do not have this luxury. Not only do these families struggle physically to navigate through the day but they also struggle financially. While I do not have the power or the skills to physically make them better, I can volunteer my time to help mitigate some of the financial burdens these families face. One Giving Moment: It is hard to pinpoint one event that has propelled me forward with Fragile Kids. By being involved with Fragile Kids you get direct exposure and interaction with the children and the families that the organization helps. You see and hear firsthand the difference one piece of equipment makes in the life of a family and child and this is what continues to drive me to want give a little back.

soon) Mountain Way Common, totaling more than 40 acres in a supposedly built-out neighborhood. NBCA has a quarterly 16page newsletter which Sue and I edit. Other non-profits: Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods, co-founder and secretary. Representatives of four Buckhead neighborhoods along both sides of Roswell Road helped to create the BCN in 2008. One Giving Moment: One main thing I learned is if you fight for a cause you believe in, you could win; but if you don’t fight, you don’t win. I attended a trial in 1999 in which the court ordered the City to rezone North Buckhead land which had been planned by the City for residential-only use so a developer could build a couple of high-rise office towers and hotel amongst the single-family homes. I was awed by the efforts of Kay Beynart (former NBCA president) who led our fight to get the Georgia Supreme Court to overturn that decision. The issue was whether cities could plan future land use, a right the Superior Court judge had overruled, I collected more than 200 donations to help pay for NBCA’s legal team. The Court’s majority agreed with us that Georgia municipalities do have the right (and obligation) to plan for long range land use. As a result, the residential areas north of Phipps Boulevard and Lenox Road remain residential to this day. The developer who lost in court didn’t hold a grudge: they joined NBCA as a business member and have remained a member ever since.

Meet Gordon Certain of Buckhead FAMILY: Wife of 30 years: Sue Certain. Daughters: Maria and Jessica. DAY JOB: Retired. Worked for Lockheed Martin for 31 years, specializing in project management for major airplane/aerospace projects. WHERE I GIVE: North Buckhead Civic Association – I joined their board in 1998 as treasurer the month after I retired. I have been NBCA president since 2000. North Buckhead faces unusual challenges. It is the City of Atlanta’s fourth largest neighborhood by population (8,270 in 2010 and growing). When I joined NBCA’s board, North Buckhead had no parks. Thanks to many wonderful volunteers and the City, we now have three major parks: Little Nancy Creek Park, Blue Heron Nature Preserve, and (coming

f men and women had a battle of the sexes that focused on health and wellness, women would likely win. Women are wise to focus on health—it is the defining factor in determining the length and quality of life. Drawing on the wisdom of the fairer sex, in recent years men have been paying more and more attention to their own health and wellness. If you are a man, or have a man in your life who has been neglecting his health for too long, there is no time like the present— especially with the summer sun and bathing Dr. Maloney suit season upon us. For some insights into well-rounded men’s health, we turned not to general medical practitioners, but to two of the area’s most trusted professional providers of dental health and plastic surgery. The pros at Atlanta Dental Spa and The Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery share these tips for men. Now is the time to improve your health and enhance the way you look and feel—inside and out! 22 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2014

Periodontal disease can cause heart attacks and strokes. By screening, catching and treating periodontal disease, your risk for heart attack and stroke decreases. Hygienists start oral wellness visits (routine cleanings) with a blood pressure check at Atlanta Dental Spa. If any abnormalities are present, they look for various contributing factors to inflammation in the gums–a causative factor seen in heart attack, stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease–using blood and oral DNA testing.

FOR HEART ATTACK AND STROKE PREVENTION:

Blood testing shows inflammatory markers in the dental chair that most physicians routinely don’t check for. Inflammatory markers look for systemic inflammation throughout the body and include LpPlac2, hsCRP and A1-C levels.

BLOOD TESTING AT THE DENTIST:

LIFESTYLE FACTORS: Dentists should take an in-depth look into life-

style factors that contribute to oral and systemic health. The folks at Atlanta Dental Spa take time to learn how patients are managing stress, diet, exercise and sleep in addition to regular

oral hygiene, or home care. All of these lifestyle factors affect the health of the mouth, and ultimately overall wellness. Under stress, cortisol levels are increased, which can contribute to the amount of tartar buildup in the mouth, sometimes despite the best home care. Tartar build up and tooth decay make way for gingivitis and periodontal disease, which can allow harmful oral bacteria to make its way into the bloodstream to other vital areas of the body. ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS: Ask

for the Velscope, a device for enhanced oral cancer screenings, which detects lesions at earlier state than the naked eye.

We’re so confident in our product we offer a

Also request a salivary test that provides a microscopic look at the bacteria levels in the mouth as well as a glimpse into the DNA that can predict predisposition for periodontal disease.

ORAL DNA TESTING:

But wait, there’s more! Each year, more than a million people have cosmetic surgery, and 25 to 30 percent of these are men. It is not surprising that this number is increasing, and that men are concerned about their appearance, with many studies documenting the importance of looks in determining success in the business world. Also, in a very health-conscious city such as Atlanta, men also want to address the genetic hand that they have been dealt in the aging process to improve things like sagging jowls and necklines that no amount of time in the gym will fix. A handsome man is one whose features are all in balance and working together, says the staff at The Maloney Center. For example, if a nose is too large or ears too prominent, they will dominate the face and distract from other more attractive features. Research indicates that men are most concerned with wrinkles and having a full head of hair. Dr. Maloney shares these simple steps to maintaining skin health.

Adorable Beaufort WHERE PROUD SOUTHERN HERITAGE MEETS A MODERN COASTLINE ARTICLE SUE G COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN ARTHUR PHOTOGRAPHY

S

pending a long weekend in beautiful Beaufort, S.C., is like going to a favorite auntie’s home where you feel the warm embrace of familiar history, the open arms of an authentic welcome and the promise of new adventures at the table that will surprise yet reassure even the most dedicated Lowcountry foodie. You will itch that scratch you didn’t know you had for being outdoors, committing to a serious stroll through the town’s 300 historically designated acres, rambling coastal trails of the many neighboring

protected sea islands and finding new ways to explore the waterways that surrounds the city founded in 1711.With postcard views of the Beaufort River dotted with working shrimp boats heading out around the barrier islands, soft marshes where inter-coastal kayakers and paddle boarders play and of cobbled streets lined with pre-Civil War homesteads, Beaufort will keep you engaged from the moment you arrive after your short four-hour drive from Atlanta. (I arrived in a gorgeous Lexus RX350 that cradled me in V6 comfort, thank you very much!) Beaufort has more antebellum homes than its more tourist crazed South Carolina sister city, Charleston, 70 miles up the coast. The Beaufort Visitor Center offers up a map for a self-guided walking (or biking) tour of some 27 homes build as early as 1717 (this one also The author gets a land paddling lesson from Tim Lovett of Higher served as a private school Ground Outfitters for boys in the 1800s and is beautifully maintained

Or, climb aboard a horse-drawn buggy with The Sea Island Carriage Co. and if you’re lucky, your guide and driver will be Debbie who will point out where movies were filmed, where history was made and how special the Angle Oak trees are that bend to the ground and grow high again from the sandy soil. Local outdoorsman Tim Lovett at Higher Ground Outfitters will get you kayaking through the tidal marshes, land paddling (long skate board + a stubby paddle = tons of fun) along the newly paved rail-to-trail 3.3 mile Spanish Moss Trail or stand up paddle boarding where you feel like a ship captain exploring a new world. We were joined by dolphins, working shrimp boats and small leisure boats as we paddled out from Waterfront Park downtown and into the Beaufort River early one misty morning. Hunting Island State Park across the bridge is another quiet giant, with

5,000 acres of marsh, maritime forest, saltwater lagoons and four miles of sandy beaches where the Friends of Hunting Island (850 volunteers) guard up to 100 loggerhead sea turtles’ nests then hatchlings each spring, logging some 7,000 hours of beach babysitting time. The bubbly Bonnie Wright is a retired board member and lovingly guided me through the lively visitors center, nearby educational nature center where you can borrow fishing tackle on the pier and a statuesque lighthouse built in 1873 -- the only one open to the public in the state -- where I climbed what seemed like a hundred spiral steps to the top and was rewarded with a view of the coastline and a canopy of Cabbage Palmetto, Slash Pines, Longleaf Pines, Live Oaks and more that make up the island’s four climate zones. Hunting Island is beautifully maintained, dog-friendly, and mostly handicap accessible from the campground to the 12 miles of designated trails. Bonnie says, “Mother Nature likes to move, so we rearrange,” outlining the Friends’ year-around conservation work fighting erosion and protecting wildlife.

T

he 70th anniversary of D-Day on June 6th will be celebrated by many but one group in Atlanta is doing something different to honor the occasion. “This is a project that is near and dear to my heart,” says Harriet P. Adams, a member of the Buckhead Bomber Girls, a group of women volunteers who are committed to preserving the stories of World War II heroes. Their mission is simple: honor the heroes of the “Greatest Generation.” The group is recognizing WWII, Vietnam and Korean veterans that reside in Atlanta by creating an 18-month calendar for 2014-2015 honoring veteran war pilots and their most prized possession - their bomber jackets. The intricate artwork on the jackets is special to their owners, signifying not only the accomplishments of their missions but also transporting them back to a time only they know of best. Each month features the daughter or granddaughter of an Atlanta veteran wearing his bomber jacket. The photographs are vibrant and powerful, telling an amazing story of heroism and character. Most of the images have been shot across aviation related venues like airports and hangars predominantly in Georgia but also in locations across the country. The owner of a physical therapy practice in Atlanta, specializing in aquatic physical therapy and rehabilitation in pools, Harriet found her inspiration in her own clients – the veterans she sees every week at work. “I had this idea to create a calendar like no other as it is filled with stories of remarkable acts of heroism by mere 18-year-old 34 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2014

boys. Many of these veterans have been my physical therapy patients and have reminded me of my foundation. My father was a JAG so I grew up with awareness of the air force and huge respect for the military, knowing that our freedom was not free. Honoring them was ingrained in my mind since I was a child.” The calendar will be released on the 70th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, to pay tribute to these men and their sacrifices. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar go directly to The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force located near Savannah, where Harriet serves on the Board of the Trustees. She continues to accept support. “Time is precious. This funding will help the project move along more quickly and it will help us preserve the legacy of these true American heroes.” If you know of a veteran or their family that would like to participate in this effort, or a retail store that would like to feature the calendar once it is printed, Harriet welcomes all informaFACEBOOK - Facebook.com/ tion. Future plans include BuckheadBomberGirls a tabletop book featuring DONATIONS - MightyEighth.org/buckheadthe images as well as disbomber-girls-calendar-donations/ playing the artwork at museums locally.
