Hello, Buckhaven!
MARCH 2015

n this Arts & Entertainment issue, we remind you of the beautiful and eye-opening cultural opportunities all around us, so close to home. Fortresses like the High, Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA), Atlanta History Center and Woodruff Arts Center offer up accessible possibilities to brighten and enlighten. If you haven’t been to MODA (across the street from The High), make a point of spending an hour there with your family this month to experience their show, Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling Within the Forces of Nature. It is interactive and will inspire you. They offer classes for kids too (register now for next month’s spring break camps). Get a taste of the show in Carrie Whitney’s Parting Thoughts.

Our writer Patrice Worth provides an introduction to the Atlanta Ballet’s Camino Real, premiering at Cobb Energy Center later this month. Patrice notes, “When choreographing the ballet, (Helen) Pickett researched the non-linear storyline and its abstract interpretations. In a bold move she chose to put a 21st century twist on the ballet creating a stylized set, score and costumes that command as much as attention as the dancers themselves.” We are lucky to have the chance to attend the world premiere and support the local talent. On page 26, meet Brandon Funk who lives in Buckhead and is dancing the role of Baron de Charlus. Next month, we celebrate our 3-year anniversary publishing BuckHaven Lifestyle. Can you believe it? If you have a favorite story, share your thoughts on our Facebook page. We are so lucky to have advertisers who support the magazine and (as always) remind you to support them.

the popular remodeling and design platform Houzz. The “Best of Houzz 2015” awards are given in two categories and Paces Construction is a top winner in both categories. This is the second year in a row that Buckhead-based Paces Construction has won these prestigious recognitions. This annual survey and analysis of 25 million monthly users of the rapidly growing website revealed Paces Construction as a top rated home professional in the Atlanta community. Paces Construction won honors in the customer service category as well as the design category. Customer service honors are determined by a variety of factors, including the number and quality of client reviews. NEW HOPE FOR YOUR EYES Woodhams Eye Clinic was founded by Dr. J. Trevor Woodhams in 1983, and has been a leader in innovative and advanced refractive surgery including LASIK, Refractive Cataract procedures and Implantable Contact Lens or ICL. WEC is the exclusive provider for Prelex™ or Presbyopic Lens Exchange, a treatment for age related farsightedness that affects most adults over 40 years of age. Dr. Trevor Woodhams and Dr. Richard Livernois recently implanted the first new lenses that may make LASIK obsolete for baby boomers. Woodhams Eye Clinic was Atlanta’s first vision correction surgery practice and was selected to perform the first “Low Add” multifocal lens procedure in Georgia. For several years, leading refractive surgeons have been able to perform vision correction surgery using a multi-focal lens that provides distance and near vision but the mid-range or computer vision was compromised. With this new technology, that problem may be a thing of the past. This new lens developed by AMO, promises to solve the “midrange vision problem.” Woodhams is a proud sponsor of Prevent Blindness of Georgia. 1140 Hammond WoodhamsEye.com

Once Upon a Time Meet Brookhaven’s Reading Advocate Article Rhiannon Bankes | Photography Provided

o you have a favorite bedtime story? A beloved bedtime book is usually as enjoyable for the reader as it is for the lucky child. Children in middle-income families will be read to aloud an average of 1,200 hours by the time they reach kindergarten. Children in lower-income families are generally only read to about 25 hours. And, 61 percent of lower income families have no children’s books in the home. Even more unfortunate, the average number of books for this population is one book per 300 children. Determined to change that statistic in Atlanta, Marlene Zeiler has created Children Read. Former Tall Tales Book Shop owner and Brookhaven resident, Zeiler was inspired by the Children’s Book Bank in Portland, Ore., a pioneer in distributing free books to low-income pre-school children. Children Read’s goal is similar in that its mission is to get books in the hands low-income preschool children in Atlanta who would not have them otherwise. The program is designed to improve these children’s reading skills by giving them books of their own before they reach kindergarten. To do this, Children Read collects and repairs new and gently used prekindergarten books and then distributes them free of charge to children at low-income preschools. They are linked with two major Head Start programs, Sheltering Arms for Kids and Partnership for Community Action, and have already visited eight of their 27 schools and given away 4,000 books. Each

child in the preschool is given a book bag with five books they can keep forever. How you can help: Use your network: Zeiler has reached out to her entire email list, which she started over 35 years ago at Tall Tales Book Shop. Consider reaching out to your contact list to organize a book drive or get a group together and volunteer. Organize a Book Drive or Establish a Book Drop Site: Children Read’s major effort is finding places willing to do book drives or collect books for them. Book drives spread the word about the need for books and reach people who might have books to give. This is a great way to get more books to children in low-income families. Schools, faith groups, businesses, clubs and individuals can all organize a book drive. Children Read provides baskets, posters, and assists in any way they can. The project’s website also provides a book drive checklist. Donate your outgrown pre-kindergarten books:
Children Reads has ongoing needs: baby books, board books, alphabet books, numbers books, shapes books, rhyming books, animal books, story books, and picture books, but please do not donate textbooks, encyclopedias, scribbled-in books, damcontinued >

They look at every book to make sure each is complete, has no scribbles, and is clean. “Most of the books donated are actually in great shape,” says Zeiler. “It’s amazing how careful most kids are with their books.” One of the biggest obstacles to literacy is the scarcity of books in the homes of low-income families. Early exposure to books is so important for developing prerequisite literacy skills, and strong reading skills correlate highly with later school success. Zeiler points out, “It is a definite win-win endeavor for everyone. BuckHaven Artists Selected for Prestigious American Craft Council Atlanta Show Distinct Blend of Old and New Cultures Captures Attention of National Jurors Article Susan Summers | Photography Debra Lynn Gold and provided

ine craft enthusiasts and collectors travel far and wide to Atlanta each March for the Southeast’s largest juried indoor craft show. When the American Craft Council Show (ACC) returns to Atlanta this year, master artisans Adrina Richard of Brookhaven and Alan Vaughn of Buckhead will present their work alongside 225 other nationally acclaimed craft-makers. All exhibitors undergo a rigorous jury process conducted by peers, museum curators, designers, and professors for acceptance into the esteemed show at the Cobb Galleria Centre, March 13-15. Adrina Richard, a first generation American born of survivors of the Armenian genocide, grew up straddling two cultures – the near east and the new world. With family members who were experts in music, culinary arts, sewing, crocheting and knitting, she was richly surrounded by the arts throughout her life. An avid col-
lector of ceramics, she eventually delved into making her first pot in 2004, after a 35-year career in higher education. “Sometimes I dream of shaping clay. I think about how people, perhaps thousands of years ago, used fired clay for activities ordinary to them, like eating, cooking and storing. But pottery was also commemorative, representing some event, person or idea meaningful to their lives that they wanted to share and remember,” says Richard. “Pottery links the shaper, users and admirers together, forming a community that is intrinsically human. Each pot reflects the textures, shapes, colors and forms that influence the potter and conveys these choices to others.” Today, Richard experiments with new techniques, forms and methods to develop her unique style of multiple textures and impressions that evoke her lifelong love of the ancient arts. She has continued >

The results are floorcloths with both a compelling visual interest and extraordinary durability. “My imagery is based in the contrast of colors, textures and edges,” says Vaughn. “Often reference is made to traditional and culturally significant rug designs. Recently, I have been combining Asian carpet motifs with Western cultural iconography to achieve refreshing imagery.” He uses trompe l’oeil and the illusion of depth in a painterly way. “I always try to present the viewer with a lush image that reveals detail over time. The closer you look, the more you see and enjoy.” Vaughn’s handmade floorcloths are the outgrowth of his enduring love of craft. A native of Radford, Virginia, he received his formal art training at Virginia Tech, Radford University and Illinois
State University, and exhibits widely in one-person, invitational and juried shows. When not in his studio, he is an art teacher and administrator for colleges and adult art centers including The Art Institute of Atlanta and Chastain Art Center. Since its debut at the Atlanta Apparel Mart in 1990, the American Craft Council Show is known as the nation’s premier marketplace for handcrafted home décor, fashion wearables, ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry and more. Eager fine craft collectors enjoy visiting the show where they learn about the makers’ creative processes, develop relationships with the artists and hear stories behind each handcrafted piece.
Alan Vaughn of Buckhead was chosen to join the American Craft Council show this month.

Art Gallery
Management System has Buckhead Entrepreneurs on Cloud Nine
“At last, sleek and beautiful gallery management in the cloud.” Article Rhiannon Bankes | Photography Provided
I
n 2013, Holy Innocents and Georgia Tech graduate Alex West, and his UGA art history gradu-ate wife, Emily, saw the opportunity to modernize a market dealing with antiquated software. While honeymooning in the Amalfi Coast, the two planned what they felt would be the perfect web-based gallery management system. By combining the best of their backgrounds, artcloud was born and has become a trusted system to galleries, artists and collectors around the world. The Buckhead couple then partnered with Lovett School graduate Barnett Williams. Born and raised in Atlanta and exposed to art from a young age by his father, local Atlanta photographer Sonny Williams, Barnett was drawn to a startup so closely aligned with his passions: art and business solutions through technology. As a team they have created a web-based platform that helps artists and galleries manage their inventory, invoicing and sales reporting, allowing them to focus on more important matters such as client relations and curating. The software is simple enough to perform a quick price check and powerful enough to sync inventory websites. Galleries can inventory a collection, as well as track clients’ activities, interests,
24
BuckHavenLifestyle.com | March 2015
and past purchases. The software’s invoicing capabilities create approval forms, track partial payments, and provide free data importing. The virtual sales assistant provides alerts of new inventory, and also suggests potentially interested clients based on their sales and activity history. Artcloud provides price points for artists of $19/month and two different gallery levels: $99/month for a base gallery account and $149/month for a website integrated account that syncs the gallery’s/artist’s/museum’s account to their website. Much of the artcloud staff has either owned or worked in a gallery, so they are aware of the daily challenges artists, galleries, and museums face and are committed to making their clients’ lives easier. The team has also discovered an opportunity to build a marketplace where young collectors can browse art, develop their taste, and even buy artwork from a gallery they might not know about. The marketplace will allow users to browse artwork and even see what it would look like on their wall, all from the convenience of their home. The team plans to launch this new marketplace in the next few months at Mkt.Artcld.com. CEO Alex is also a co-founder of the local non-profit WonderRoot, which he started in 2004, and Advisor Emily is chair of the Circle Salon group of the High Museum and works as gallery director at Anne Irwin Fine Art. Williams is based out of Strongbox West and heads artcloud’s sales and onboarding departments.

The Sensuality of
Sadness
Atlanta Ballet performs Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real Article Patrice Worthy | Photography Provided
I
t took five years for Helen Pickett to choreograph Camino Real, Atlanta Ballet’s adaptation of the Tennessee Williams play. It is the first time the work has been presented as a ballet. Pickett’s vision for Camino Real lay in its surreal qualities and the sensuality of human emotion. The story follows the inhabitants of the town as they struggle with vain regret, loneliness and the emptiness of opportunities lost. Pickett’s intention was to create a unique work that remained authentic to the complexities of the text. “Because of the surreal nature of the play, I asked myself, ‘What are the anchors going to be?’ The anchors became the humanity of the characters. It’s monumental because there’s so much humanity in it. It’s so much of what humanity goes through in terms of emotion,” Pickett says. “I love the challenge of the relationships and I wanted to forget what everyone else has done and make it about the relationships.” When choreographing the ballet Pickett researched the non-linear storyline and its abstract interpretations. In a bold move she chose to put a 21st century twist on the ballet creating a stylized set, score and costumes that command as much as attention as the dancers themselves. The New York-based choreographer collaborated with lighting designer, David Finn, who enlisted Emma Kingsbury, an Australian-based set and costume designer, to manifest her vision- which was to keep Camino Real in its original dreamlike state. “The set is an anchor that is surreal and features transparency. Transparency is representative of the transparency that allows your love to be seen and allows you to be loved,” Pickett says. The eerily cinematic design of the bi-level set takes on a life of its own. The broad staircase leading to “Terra Incognita” is the focal point of the stage. The set sits in front of an eternal sunset symbolizing the looming comfort of stagnation.
“I didn’t want it to be realistic, so I started thinking in terms of a skeleton. It is purgatory; they are stuck in time or in a waiting station and that’s what led to the idea of a skeletal structure,” Pickett says. “It has a lot of Cuban influences that show up. It’s truly extraordinary.” Dance provides new ways to express the play’s message. “I like the sensuality of dance. I want to get back to it, because we got away from it. The sensuality can get lost on dancers who are so used to touch,” Pickett says. “The dancers of Atlanta Ballet are getting versed in my choreographic language and they can finish my sentences. I tell them to be overt in what you’re showing. Let the body flow and follow.” “There’s a sensuality to his writing and Williams was a sensual man,” Pickett says. “Touch has so many connotations, so essentially the dancers have to be comfortable with themselves.”

Wrap It Up Stylish Outerwear for Evenings Out Article Laura carson miller

ts always fun to dress up for an evening out, and if there is a chill in the air, your choice of outerwear can make or break your style vibe. I spoke with those in the know at several of Atlanta’s top boutiques to find out which outerwear styles are keeping customers at the top of their fashion game, and got some great suggestions on how to style outwear into spring so you don’t just blend into the crowd. Atlanta’s fab’rik boutique, which has multiple locations, including at the Shops Around Lenox in Buckhead, carries fun and on-trend pieces that can truly transition easily from day to evening. Fab’rik Personal Stylist Alexa Anderson created an outfit that dazzles by pairing the fab’rik sequin romper with a leather

moto jacket for the perfect combination of sass, sparkle, and edge. “When styling an outfit around one particular item, it is important to underplay the rest of the outfit, suggests Anderson. “This is a perfect look for a night out, special events or dinner with friends.” “A black leather jacket is a must-have item for any woman’s wardrobe. It adds an edge and uniqueness that a normal blouse or sequins would not be able to carry on its own,” she adds. A leather jacket is also a smart buy as it is a multi-season wardrobe item. It’s perfect for an art gallery opening with black jeans or leather leggings in fall or winter, and or worn over a sleeveless maxi dress to see that long awaited musical that has finally hit town in the spring! The ability to add or take away layers underneath makes a leather jacket a no-brainer, as it can be worn fall, winter and spring. With three Atlanta locations, including their Buckhead store, Alexis’ Suitcase is part consignment, part boutique, and offers the best of all worlds when it comes to finding fun outerwear pieces that go the distance. Owner Jayna Thompson echoes the importance of layering, sharing, “Although the month of March in Atlanta can be a bit tricky for some, I personally love the weather’s “tug of war”. From colorful scarves to lightweight jackets and cardigans, layering outerwear pieces becomes quite creative and transitions winter to spring with ease. Layering is most definitely one of my favorite things to play with when it comes to fashion because it allows the mix of patterns, textures, and colors.” The Aztec fur coat from fab’rik is a true multitasker that can jazz up simple clothing in a snap. “On average, a grey jersey tunic would not be called stylish and fashionable,” says Anderson. “But adding an amazing coat with a print or even fur totally changes the look of a simple item. The best coats and furs to invest in are those that offer multiple ways to wear it, like this Aztec coat. The fur collar is removable and then you have an oversize blazer coat which will be a great transition into spring.” Coats and jackets designed with more than one texture, whether fur, leather, or a patterned detail are quite popular with Atlanta’s stylish set. The added interest boosts the style clout of what could be otherwise boring outerwear. Anderson advises: “Since fur usually makes such a strong statement on its own, I find it best to keep the rest of the outfit understated. Solid colors, simple jewelry, and a basic clutch or shoulder bag will do the trick. Don’t be afraid to play up shoes, just make sure they don’t compete too much with all that amazing fur.” “Furs really are a great choice when your desire is to add a touch of sophistication, says Thompson. “Whether faux or real, furs add that old Hollywood glamour to any outfit!”

rom time to time, Driver’s Notebook hits the road to make sure our readers get the most up-to-date coverage of today’s—and often tomorrow’s—automobiles for drivers to invest in, utilize and ultimately enjoy. Arguably the most esteemed auto exhibition in the United States, the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) maintained its reputation for unveiling what major automakers have in store for the present and years ahead. Held at Detroit’s Cobo Center, the NAIAS provided nine days of bliss for automobile enthusiasts in January. Highlights included 55 vehicle introductions from around the world, boasting attributes ranging from being fully electric to muscle-flexing supercar engines, plus the disclosure of innovative connections to gadgets, computers, tablets and mobile devices. The final attendance tally according to NAIAS totaled an astounding 808,775 attendees. Luckily, we were a part of that number, so enjoy these photos featuring some of these extravagant cars and trucks set to either hit the streets now or hopefully become realized concepts in the very near future.

Curtains Open for Local Act3 celebrates the performing arts Article Patti Folio | Photography Provided
F
ive talented women who shared a passion for performing arts joined together 13 years ago to produce top quality musical theater in the middle school their children attended (Dickerson Middle in Cobb County). This quickly grew to producing shows at the local high school (Walton in Cobb County). Five years ago, these “Drama Mamas,” as they were affectionately called, along with the Board of Directors, formed Act3 Productions, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. With the help of a legion of volunteers, they transformed a vacant warehouse into a state-of-the-art black box theater. Today, Act3 produces two Broadway musicals and two plays per season. A “Second Stage Series,” sponsored by The Sandy Springs Society, presents two additional shows that share ticket revenue with a local charity of the director’s choice. The talent on and behind the stage represents Dunwoody and Sandy Springs with vigor. Liane LeMaster of Dunwoody is the director of improvisation and she runs the youth impro troup, teaches classes and directs shows. And, it’s a family affair as her two daughters and husband have performed on the Act3 stage. The group’s Board of Directors is also strong with Sandy Springs residents including Cheri Morris, Jan Collins, Anna Cay Robertson, Debbie Bauman, Michael Moebes, Susan Langlais and Patrick Hill. Hill has acted in many productions, and many of the Board Members have children on the stage and in classes. Through the Act3 Arts Academy, the company offers a range of acting classes, dramas, musicals, and workshops for students in grades K-12. A youth improv troupe provides instruction and perfor-

mance opportunities for middle and high school students. The most recent addition to the Academy is the Encor3 Internship Company, which gives high school students the opportunity to learn and gain experience in all aspects of theater production, from the business and technical side to performing. Act3 also supports the development of new works. By Wheel And By Wing, an original musical first written during a youth workshop, was recently given a staged reading in New York City with a cast of well-known Broadway, television and film actors. Act3’s focus has always been on the overall quality of its productions. The company has been recognized with a total of 33 Metropolitan Atlanta Theater Awards in the past three years, including 14 in 2012, the most ever bestowed upon a single theater company. Act3 has also received four awards from the International Music and Entertainment Association Awards. Its youth productions have been recognized for “Best Ensemble” and “Acting” at the Junior Theater Festival. Act3 will close out its current season with the musical, Curtains, April 17 through May 9. The Second Stage show will be Jon And Jen (charity link to be determined), May 15-17. The summer will be filled with student workshops. Act3 plans to continue to produce high quality musicals and plays. The company hopes to increase its educational offerings by working with local schools and organizations to expand class offerings. Act3 will continue to give back to its community by seeking partnerships with other non-profit organizations. Pictured: Lauren Cleland and Alli Sheahan as the Hilton Sisters in Side Show. Photography Paige Crawford
Get Involved: There are many ways to get involved with Act3. Over the past five years, actors aging from three to 78 from all over the Atlanta area have performed at Act3. The company is always seeking new talent! Volunteers with expertise in all areas of production, from costuming to set building, are always welcome. Like most community theaters, Act3’s greatest needs are financial. Ticket sales alone are not enough to sustain a theater operation today. Many fine local theaters have closed their doors over the past few years. Act3 is dependent upon donations from organizations and individuals in order to continue to operate and produce quality shows. Sponsorship opportunities for the season or individual shows are available. Any donation, no matter how small, will help us to continue to thrive.

andy Springs natives, Bo Wilkins and Scott “Ski” Feinstein are joining forces with their friend Josh Rifkind to host an afternoon of good food and fundraising for Songs For Kids. Songs For Kids was founded in 2007 with the mission to enrich the lives of children suffering from illness and hardship. The program brings musicians into the lives of kids both in and out of hospitals and special needs camps through live interactive concerts, hospital bedside performances and a Songs For Kids Records songwriting and recording program. “Music has always been a passion,” says Sandy Springs native and Co-Chair Feinstein. “Having a 13-year-old daughter, working to help other kids holds a big place in my heart.” Ski attended both Holy Innocents and Riverwood High School and is a graduate of Georgia State College. Fellow Co-Chair, Bo Wilkins is also an Atlanta native and father of three girls. Bo also serves on the boards of Camp Sunshine and Curing Kids Cancer. He is the co-founder of SoundRiver Advisors, a wealth management and life insurance advisory firm. Volunteer Services representative Meryl Franco, Children’s Healthcare of Altanta at Egleston says, “For the past several years, Songs for Kids Foundation has consistently brought an uplifting sense of joy to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. For many of our patients, this is a rare opportunity to truly come out of their shells and shine. It is a healing experience both for the children and their families who are able to see them enjoy this creative expression.” Two years ago, the Songs For Kids Tour lifted off with what may have been the biggest children’s hospital outreach program ever. 38
BuckHavenLifestyle.com | March 2015
The Tour reached more than 5,000 hospitalized children and families in 239 children’s hospitals in 180 cities. The journey lasted over 250 days and covered 32,000 miles, as kids had the opportunity to sing, dance, laugh and smile in hospitals across every region in the country. The Songs For Kids Foundation invites you to their inaugural Music and Food Festival taking place on March 29 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Monday Night Brewing. The fun-filled afternoon includes a performance by Yacht Rock Review as well as others and food from some of the city’s best restaurants including JCT, The Optimist, Gunshow, Bantam + Biddy, Metrofresh, Gypsy Kitchen, The Southern Gentlemen, Twin Smokers BBQ, Rosebud, Grindhouse Killer Burgers, and Lure. “Through the festival, we hope to educate families about Songs For Kids and the year round music programs we provide for kids in need,” says Josh Rifkind, organization founder. “We’re bringing together the best chefs the city has to offer and some of our best musicians.”

Buckhead-Based Mobile App Knocks Our Socks Off
LUV4wrd Partners with Mercy Care and HFTH to Help Homeless Article Kaci Kelly | Photography Provided
L
UV4wrd, a free, social- and cause-inspired mobile app headquartered in Buckhead, launched recently with a 44 Days of LUV campaign created to give warmth to Atlanta’s 7,000 people living in homelessness. Not only did LUV4wrd and sponsor, FLIP burger boutique provide 7,000 coats/hats/socks through the campaign, the app helped save the Hosea Feed the Hungry (HFTH) annual Christmas Dinner by providing 1,200 turkeys three days before Christmas. “We recognized the value of making it easy to link people to causes and link major brands/sponsors to charities,” says Atlanta native and LUV4wrd app founder Bridgette Morris. “This inaugural campaign really knocked our socks off with the outpouring of support from Atlanta individuals and corporations.” LUV4wrd links sponsors and users to a network of charities, causes and social good. The #LUV4HomelessATL campaign was a social media challenge designed to give warmth to the 7,000 people living in homelessness in Atlanta by providing them with coats, hats, socks, etc. LUV4wrd user posts equaled dollars to Mercy Care, who operates Atlanta’s only healthcare for the homeless program. FLIP burger boutique funded the campaign and Mercy Care distributed the gifts of warmth to the homeless. LUV4wrd also helped to save the 44th annual Hosea Feed the Hungry Christmas Dinner by getting 1,200 turkeys donated three days before Christmas, with the support of Arby’s Foundation, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and Sysco. “During the last Thanksgiving holiday, Hosea Feed the Hungry exceeded their goal of feeding more than 10,000 individuals and working families, placing the annual Christmas Dinner in need of turkeys to feed families for the holidays,” says Elisabeth Omilami, president of HTFH. “Thanks to LUV4wrd, we received 1,200 turkeys just in time to prepare Christmas dinner for more than 5,000 Atlantans living in poverty and homelessness. The Grinch stole Christmas, but LUV4wrd gave it back.”

In the 44 days of LUV campaign, LUV4wrd: 1. Donated 7,000 coats/hats/socks to Atlanta people living
in homelessness. 2. Raised $31,500 in funds for Mercy Care and Hosea Feed the Hungry charities. 3. Received more than 15 million views and 35,000 posts LUVed on LUV4wrd. Here is how it works:
Users download the free app (LUV4wrd) then post a photo or video of what they “LUV.” For each user post, money was donated by FLIP burger boutique to Mercy Care for the #LUV4HomelessATL campaign, and turkeys were donated by Arby’s Foundation, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation and Sysco to HFTH. About LUV4wrd

he U.S. Stock market should rise another 10 percent in 2015. That’s the average prediction of a group of top Wall Street strategists surveyed by Barrons from firms such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Citi Research. With average projections for GDP coming in at nearly 3 percent, and with steeply lower gas prices keeping more cash in consumers pockets, 2015 should shape up to be good year for the U.S. Here are five ideas to enhance your portfolio for the year.
4) American International Group (symbol: AIG)
1) 1.155 One Year CD
5) United Continental Holdings Inc. (symbol: UAL)
Though you may not find, “CD” in most advisers’ typical recommendation lexicon, it’s always nice to make something extra on your safe money. One year is not a long enough term that you will miss higher yields from rising rates, it keeps your money very liquid, and it just happens to be a competitive sweet spot in yield with banks seeking deposits. FDIC insurance covers up to $250K per account. My favorites at the time of writing are:
After a big run, this stock might be better purchased on dips. A more consolidated industry and lower fuel prices are two big positive trends for the airline industry and United. “High demand, new routes, wifi adding, strong premium bookings, seasonal shapings, route changes, decreasing departures while increasing seats (thus bringing down costs),” are a few more tailwind comments heard on the conference calls from this company. Despite the run on the stock, the company still trades at around 8 times 2015 projected earnings – a substantial discount to the overall market.
Nationwide Bank (Nationwide.com/onlinebanking) owned by Nationwide Insurance with an A+ S&P rating, and an A1 Moody’s rating with a 1.14% one year CD yield. CIT Bank (BankOnIt.com) with a 1.15% yield is a large Livingston, NJ outfit. BankDirect out of Dallas, TX has a 1.17%
The stain from a government bailout during the great recession keeps the stock price of this insurance Goliath depressed. I calculate the price to tangible book value ratio at around .75. The company has paid back the government from the bailout. Performance has been solid recently and the company’s goals are to increase ROE to 10%. AIG derives around 65% of revenue from its property and casualty division and 34% from life and retirement.
2) European Currency Hedged ETF
With the European Central Bank promising to intact some form of quantitative easing to impede further deflationary pressures, European stocks could become beneficiaries of easy money policy. The catch is that it could also weaken the euro against the dollar. Enter currency hedged Euro zone ETFs. One that I like is symbol HEDJ by Wisdom Trees, which owns around 125 Euro zone stocks, has a 1.36% yield and a .58% expense ratio. A second is HEZU by iShares which is very heavily weighted toward financials and has a .51% current expense ratio. 3) Google Inc. (symbols: Googl, Goog)
Google lagged the market sorely in 2014. I believe investors are distracted by Google’s more experimental arm with such concoctions as Google glasses, self-driving cars, and high-speed Internet access. But overall company revenues continue to grow at a 20% clip from Google’s core search business. While recent spending has hurt earnings, the vast majority of the spending is on future growth projects such as data centers, hiring, and research.

useums inspire. They take you places by opening your eyes and showing you the world through someone else’s eyes. Some museum walls are lined in framed art. Some show us the how others live. Some introduce possibilities. Here in BuckHaven, we are fortunate to have access to art, music, theater, dance and culture that brings the world to our neighborhood. This month, take someone special to the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA). Why? If you’ve ever wondered how water travels into your home and where it goes or how what is inside your walls makes your home more or less energy efficient, the current exhibition at MODA allows you to explore these questions and more. Sustainable Shelter: Dwelling Within The Forces Of Nature explores biodiversity, human and animal architecture, ecosystems and energy and water conservation, all from the perspective of the “home” and shows how design processes can be used to alter contexts of dwelling. What that means is that you’ll get a chance to peek inside walls, test out different kinds of light bulbs and compare the size and output of homes today compared to 50 or 100 years ago. Sustainable Shelter has more than 15 interactive components, so it is a

great fit for the whole family. Kids will enjoy the hands-on nature of the exhibition as well as the graphics, cartoons and interactive computer games, and everyone will learn more about how we can make our homes more sustainable parts of the earth’s natural systems. Why not pause at the Design Bar in the lobby to try out a walk-up design challenge or sign up for one of the 3D printing workshops. MODA will show you how design changes everything.
