Editor’s Letter
Hello BuckHaven! W
e are still reeling from last month when we celebrated three years publishing BuckHaven Lifestyle magazine. What a fabulous ride! We’ve met so many generous and entrepreneurial people along the way, growing and evolving as we go. That’s what travel is about, right? I love a good trip. Last month, I flew to Portland, Oregon, to visit my sister and her twin girls. I’ve been lucky enough to make that trip nearly every year since they were born six years ago. That first year, I had just moved to Atlanta and was not sold on the idea. At all. But, you’ve grown on me, BuckHaven, as you know. Returning home, I see what a diverse and hospitable place you are. I Enjoy the ride! My see a community where people work hard and live well. Local niece at Skamania chefs continue to surprise me, our many museums open up my Lodge, Washington. mind and a never-ending parade of non-profits do impressive work to help others. Getting away makes me appreciate all of this even more. When I am in Portland, I am treated to a feast of local seafood (the salmon curry with pumpkin at Monsoon Thai Cuisine in Northeast is my go-to), a quirky and ever-changing bar scene (hundreds of bottles line the dark paneled walls at the rather pretentious but entertaining Multnomah Whiskey Library) and a plethora of shops offering up products carefully chosen from down the street and around the world (visit Canoe on SW Alder for a cool set of backyard bird calls or leather satchel). So much to see, do, drink, eat and explore, but, where is that Southern hospitality? The warm welcome Atlantans offer is genuine. Elsewhere, that is not so evident. Getting away has made coming home better. Enjoy this month’s travel issue full of gorgeous photography and tales of trips. Share a photo of your vacation on our Facebook page and show us where you’ve been! Happiest of Mother’s Day to all our BuckHaven mommies!

Around Town Atlanta Falcons Present $30,000 to Northside Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Dan Quinn, defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux and center Joe Hawley recently visited Northside Hospital to present the hospital’s Foundation with a $30,000 donation on behalf of the football team. The money will go to support cancer patients at Northside and to expand the programs and services available to help them beat their diagnosis. Northside is the preferred healthcare partner of the Atlanta Falcons. During the 2014 season, the Falcons donated funds to Northside for every sack made by the team and, additionally, for every reception made during the Oct. 12 Breast Cancer Awareness game, which was presented by Northside.
“We are so pleased to be working with David,” says Baum. “He has really impressed me with his food, and he shares my passion for the concept.” As executive chef, Berry will be responsible for all culinary operations, including menu development, hiring and hosting cooking classes for the restaurant’s members-only culinary club. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York and has more than 12 years experience managing fine dining kitchens. Fabi combines her Italian roots with an intimate knowledge of international food cultures and invaluable connections within the culinary industry to source and select products. Born in Trieste, Italy, she studied in the United Kingdom and at University of Gastronomic Sciences, founded by Slow Food, in Piedmont, Italy. After obtaining that degree, Fabi became the didactic study trip planner for the University of Gastronomic Sciences and has been organizing educational excursions to discover local food cultures around the globe. Bellina Alimentari will be located at 675 Ponce de Leon Avenue NE, in the Central Food Hall of Ponce City Market. Bellina-Alimentari.com

For the fourth consecutive year, Van Michael Salon and the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper have partnered on Aveda Earth Month to proudly raise funds and awareness for local water conservation throughout the month of April. All seven Van Michael locations hosted in-salon fundraising efforts again this year, resulting in a $15,000 donation through raffles and an Earth Month-themed Happy Hour Hair event at the new Midtown salon. With a donation at the event, attendees learned how to style their hair while still conserving water and enjoyed complimentary bites and drinks to toast to another successful Earth Month. The group of Aveda salons also contributed to the brand’s global mission to raise $6.5 million for clean water in 2015 by selling the Aveda Earth Month candle. The sale of one Earth Month Light The Way Candle ™ provides clean drinking water to a person in Madagascar for an entire year.
Students March Atlanta International School high school students, along with students from Coretta Scott King Young Leadership Academy, marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and attended other events during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Selma-to-Montgomery March. The trip also included the opportunity to hear the president speak as well as a private tour of the Jackson family home, where Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders planned the 1965 march. The group journaled and also chronicled the trip on Twitter and Instagram at #aisapsselma.

Certain Honored Gordon Certain received the prestigious Park Pride 2015 Inspiration Award. These annual awards honor leaders who inspire others to expand and improve public parks and greenspaces. “The recent increase in parks in Buckhead has much to do with Gordon Certain,” says a Park Pride spokesperson. “As president of North Buckhead Civic Association, Gordon has worked with numerous public and private groups to advocate for and secure public parks and greenspace in what has historically been the least parked district in Atlanta.” He worked with multiple stakeholders to create a greenspace master plan that protected environmentally sensitive areas from development (Blue Heron Nature Preserve), reimagined ‘unusable” land into successful public spaces (Mountain Way Common), and transformed vacant parcels into a well-loved neighborhood park (Little Nancy Creek Park). The awards were given last month at the Park Pride Parks and Greenspace Conference held at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. We congratulate Gordon, a contributor to Buckhaven Lifestyle and featured volunteer in last year’s June issue.

A Groovy Summer The Groove Studio in Sandy Springs is offering summer camps for teens. The Guitar Workshop for Girls is designed specifically to help teenage guitar players and singer-songwriters with significantly improving their skills on the guitar. Each attendee will have a chance to develop a better understanding of basic music theory concepts and then will have the opportunity to translate that knowledge to improve their skill and technique on the guitar. By working in a small group under owner/producer, Eric Stalling’s direction each student will reap the benefits of learning how to collaborate with other musicians. Some experience required. If your teen wants to learn the basics of recording, the Groove Studio has a new state of the art recording studio. Students will have the opportunity to record, track, editing and mix a song from beginning to end in this unique one week workshop. Each student will have a chance to work at the console while working with artist recording in the live room and vocal booth. They’ll tackle everyday challenges like mic selection and placement, signal routing and equalization. This is a great program for any teen interested in music and the recording process. The studio uses Pro Tools 10 DAW interfaced with a Ghost 24 channel analogue mixing board by Soundcraft. No experience necessary. 404.626.1133 GrooveStudioMusic.com

he bustle gets a little louder as you walk closer to the entrance of the restaurant at the corner of Peachtree and Peachtree-Dunwoody Roads. A welcoming hostess not only seats your party but also validates your parking and offers a coat check – extra points for that additional attention to hospitality. The bartenders wave and smile as you are shown to your table. Nothing beats premium seating, watching Executive Chef Philippe Haddad work magic in the F&B kitchen, stirring up bowls of splendid bouillabaisse and adding final touches to the next set of plates departing his domain, destined for your dinner table. Venture in during the evenings if you want the full effect. Manager Fabrice Vergez will find you as he makes rounds, checking on guests, ensuring nobody leaves without a smiling face and satisfied tummy. Say hello to Philippe, too. He’s approachable, happy to strike up a conversation and turn you into a regular of his bistro that sits minutes from Phipps and Lenox malls (great, if you care for that action, but just far enough away from the malls to tout an ambience of a rustic neighborhood eatery). Food styles served here include American traditional, French with a twist, seafood, tapas and vegetarian. Whether you crave daily delicioso or prized catches, Philippe has something cooking in to hit the right points on your palate. Armed with 38 years of global, culinary and hospitality experience, and bringing all those influences together in his preparation and presentation, Philippe will have you cherishing the last drops of your onion soup. If you order the lobster tagliatelle, allow the fennel and roasted tomatoes to weave their spell. The oxtail risotto is another classic and there are raw food combos galore if relaxing with a cocktail and snack and absorbing the European-style atmosphere is more your game. The patio offers another venue if the indoors cramp your style. The sautéed foie gras arrives wrapped in a brioche with mushrooms and sauce, and F&B serves escargots in the shell - probably one of the few places in Atlanta you can find them. Seafood is the specialty, but you may take your pick from not just beef and lamb plates but also rabbit braised Belgian style with dark ale or duck leg with fava beans and burgundy sauce. And don’t you dare leave without a sweet note to complete the meal. Philippe’s crepe suzette is fantastic as is the staple crème brulee with a madeleine, but of course, to sign off with a French touch. The orange almond tuile with berries, mint and sorbet is an equally suited contender for the die-hard dessert addict. BuckHaven

Lifestyle salutes the chef. Haddad commits himself to multiple local volunteer opportunities, including Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s national fundraiser, “Man and Woman of the Year.” He is campaigning in honor of two local children who are blood cancer survivors as well as in honor of his father, who continues his battle against leukemia, along with 15 other candidates helping to raise a goal of $750,000 by June 2015. Haddad has also participated in Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation and Give Me Five events, and is continually involved in the Make-aWish Foundation, Meals on Wheels and Children of Restaurant Employees (CORE), which F&B held a proceeds dinner for in January 2015. Haddad enjoys being involved in the community as much as possible, with a desire to give back to those who have given him so much. He has truly committed himself to LLS in honor of his father’s battle. Cheers! Monday–Thursday 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m., Friday-Saturday 11:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. 3630 Peachtree Rd 404.254.1797 FandBAtl.com

ho doesn’t need a personal assistant? We could all use some help taking care of the house, shopping, planning celebrations and vacations, and booking in pamper time. It might even take two assistants to make it all happen. Consider the able entrepreneurs at Enjoi Concierge Group, a Buckhead company owned by two women who will handle it all. Joi Jackson’s background is in the hospitality and events industry working with companies such as Kimpton, Mandarin, Starwood and Loews hotels. Her partner, Melanie Barber, has a background in public relations, sales and marketing as well as fundraising. “Both of us were always the ‘go-to girls,’ wherever we worked,” says Jackson. “People were always asking us ‘can you get me a nice room?’ or ‘Where should I go and hang when I’m in this town?’ We always knew the answer or the person who could get us the answer.” Eventually it dawned on them that they could be the ‘go-to girls’ professionally and started Enjoi Concierge Group. “There’s nothing we can’t handle. We want people to understand that we’ll take the stress off their plate. We can get hotel accommodations at a discount, book travel — both commercial and private jets — get tickets to a game or pick up laundry. Some people have assistants who do that but they only work 9-5. We work 24-7, 365 days a year.” Whether it’s for business or personal use, Enjoi Concierge offers a dedicated concierge who will handle all requests including hotel and travel accommodations (need a private chef? Not a problem); arranging for personal trainers or tailors, planning a bar mitzvah, high tea parties or a corporate event as well as helping in a relocation and home organization (including childcare referrals, lawn services and pet services). They’ve created their own app so services can be requested on the spot. Fees can vary from being paid by the hour to a retainer. “What don’t they do?” asks Guerdy Claimon, president and CEO of Omni Group, a staffing company, who uses Enjoi for 16

both personal and business services. “They’ve done everything from booking my travel, conference rooms, limos, really everything I need.” One of their most popular services is planning trips, especially international ones. “It used to be that travel agents would do everything and it takes a lot of time coordinating travel on the web,” says Jackson. “We just did a two-week trip to Brazil for a client and we arranged a car to take them to the airport, pick them up and everything until they got back home. They say ‘I need this type of restaurant, this type of nightlife experience, this type of gifts to give to clients and we take care of it all. We have a very good Roladex, make use of social media and our global travel partners to get the best information. People can trust what we say and do.” The company recently handled all the logistics for a two-week trip to Costa Rica for Fulton County Chairman John Eaves and his nonprofit Global Youth Ambassadors Program. Jackson believes that a new niche will be handling the itineraries for educational and service trips taken by churches and other non-profit groups. The two are also very devoted to the community and giving back. They have partnered with the American Cancer Society, Atlanta Mentoring Program, the Community Council of Metropolitan Atlanta, which helps disadvantaged and disenfranchised youth particularly minority males, Delta Sigma Theta and the Atlanta Children’s Shelter. During the holidays, they partnered with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and held a toy drive. Claimon says it’s all about the expertise and personalization. “Joi knows me and provides an elite experience,” he says. “They are in constant contact — did you land, is your limo EnjoiConciergeGroup.com driver there — is there champagne 404.593.1081 in your room? INDIA: A BEAUTIFUL
CONTRAST Article and Photography MaLIka Bowling
The author and a new friend
T
o understand my experience in India, you have to go back 37 years. I’m of Indian decent and was rescued from certain death, adopted out of an orphanage when I was a baby. After living a privileged life (because if you get to grow up in the U.S. you are privileged), I decided it was time to go back to my roots and give back to those kids in the orphanage. Here I was, some 30-something years since my last visit, headed back to Mumbai, with my adoptive father and my brother. I don't care how much you read about it or see it on TV, nothing can prepare you for the striking contrast of beauty and chaos that you'll experience. India is the second most populated country in the world with 1.2 billion, compared to the U.S. with just 316 million. Quiet is hard to come by. Our journey started in Mumbai, but our experience was a bit more rustic than expected. Rather than stay at a beautiful hotel like the Oberoi, we stayed at The Cricket Club of India. Like a Country Club, but much more basic in décor and amenities, these are patronized by 20

India’s elite. As an outsider, it's a great study on the culture of the country. A fun evening out in Mumbai can be found at Cafe Zoe. Not only are there decent small plates, late night it turns into a clubbier feel but still fun that groups can hang about and sip on good cocktails. Want to experience street food without the "street" part? Seriously, DO NOT eat from a street vendor in India. Go to Tewari Brothers. These small chains can be found in several Mumbai locations. Samosas and a variety of other chaats and delicious desserts can be found here. This is authentic Indian food at its best. But I wasn't there to wine and dine. I was there to help raise money for an orphanage under my foundation. We made the short journey to Bandra where our orphanage is located. Unlike the sad faces of street children, here the children are grinning from ear to ear happy to be sponsored for clothing, shelter and an education from the time they are taken in until they graduate college. If you think traffic is bad in Atlanta, imagine it 10 times worse than rush hour, all the
time. Unlike Atlanta, cars and mopeds weave in and around one another amidst the constant symphony of honking horns. In what seems like sheer chaos, somehow all seem to navigate this balancing act, especially the families of four (including babies) who get around on their tiny mopeds. What would a visit to India be without a visit to the Taj Mahal? The beautiful jewel encrusted structure is certainly a sight to behold. Be careful traveling there. Somehow I ended up on a local train (certainly not meant for foreigners). The locals regarded me with looks of both disgust and intrigue at the same time, as I dared to bare my arms and was not sporting a sari (traditional Indian dress). As afternoon turned to evening, the possibility of reaching our hotel seemed to dwindle and fear of safety rose. A crowd of pushy taxi drivers surrounded us as we descended the train, not knowing who was legitimate or out to do us harm, I've never prayed so hard to make a journey to a hotel as much as I did on that journey. A three-star hotel, the Mumtaz was more like a two star, but it was heaven to me with a

e asked a few of our favorite Lifestyle Publications photographers to share their more poignant images from recent travels outside our perimeter. Dennis Malcolm Byron (writer and photographer for our Driver's Notebook series and other fine stories) has had the pleasure of traveling twice to Thailand. "This country is truly majestic. From the delectable cuisine to its rich history, jaw-dropping natural beauty and pampering accommodations, I was blessed to experience its splendor," saya Byron, who left no stone unturned during his visits. He shot with his trusty Canon Rebel T22i. Follow his trail at AleSharpton.Blogspot.com. Scott Areman likes it hot. In Miami, he took his camera everywhere 22

and stepped outside his comfort zone. He stepped inside a barbershop along a busy street to find conversation and inspiration. "This shot feels old worldly. Plus, the way the little girl is looking at me lends to the tale." He shot in Miami with a Fuji XE-1 and Fuji 27mm lens. In San Juan, Puerto Rico, he turned his head while walking through a crowded cemetery to find the urban skyline, punctuated with telling grave stones. "I like this image because it has a peacefulness and also a distinct contrast between old and new, secular and religious." Scott shot this with a Fuji XE-1 and Fuji 35mm f/1.4 lens. He shot the lovely women in our feature honoring volunteers in our January issue. See more of his work at ScottAreman.com.

Park City Two Ways
The Bridge Cafe' and Grill
Article and Photography Robin Conte
W
e drove along Interstate 80 en route from Salk Lake City to the slopes and remained uneasily silent while the four of us--two adults, two teenage boys--stared out the car windows to bare brown, scrubby mountains. The rumors were true. There was no snow. We had flown from Atlanta in early March and arrived in Utah to find temperatures remarkably similar to those we left, with daily highs hitting the mid-50s. But Park City aims to please, and it did not disappoint. By the end of our five days, we had enjoyed beautiful spring skiing on groomed slopes, delightful walks, satisfying meals, and some fine family bonding time. Our vacation was a success, after all. There’s a reason that Park City is a popular ski destination for Atlanta families. From Hartsfield it is a direct flight to Salt Lake City, and from there it’s about a one-hour drive to the slopes. The ski resort at Park City is spitting distance from tonier Deer Valley and quieter Canyons, offering a variety of ski options from one location. Plus, for the après ski crowd or non-skiers, the western-themed Main Street is packed with restaurants, boutiques, and bars. Throw in the 2002 Winter Olympic venues, an Olympic museum, and Tabernacle Square, all just a short drive from the slopes or the airport, and you have the ingredients for a varied and enjoyable family vacation. In two consecutive years at Park City, we had completely different experiences. Last year we had enough Marriott rewards points to cover four nights at the Park City Marriott, which is one of three Marriott hotels there--the others being Marriott’s Summit Watch on Main Street and Marriott’s Mountainside at the ski resort (both pricier). While our location was a bit removed from the action, there is a hotel shuttle bus, as well as free public bus transportation provided by Park City that offers easy access to Main Street, Park City ski resort, Canyons, and Deer Valley. In 2014 the spring snow was ample and temperatures were wintry, and when we were off the slopes we bundled up to explore the shops and eateries on Main Street. I had booked a late flight back to Atlanta, and we used our final half day to visit the Winter Olympic venues and museums. Although there are daily tours of the Winter Olympic competition sites, we opted for a quick look at them and then proceeded into the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center. We were happy to learn that admission is completely free and the building houses two museums: The Alf Engen Ski Museum and the Eccles Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games Museum. Both museums display 24

wonderful exhibits, instructive films and interactive perks. We took turns sitting in a bobsled, and we paid a small sum for Disneyesque simulations of a bobsled ride and a ski run. (For $185, you can experience an actual bobsled ride down the Olympic track, complete with professional driver.) We allowed enough time to stop in Salt Lake City to visit Tabernacle Square before our departure. The grounds are beautiful and Mormon sisters from various countries toured us through the Mormon Temple and the Tabernacle, home to the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They suggested we take lunch at the Lion House Pantry next door, and the friendly cafeteria indeed serves delicious home-style meals at a great value. This year we decided to stay closer to the action, and we found a condo through the helpful staff at Park City Vacation Properties that was about a 10-minute walk to the lifts and about a 15-minute walk to Main Street. The warm weather allowed for pleasant walking, and I also walked to the Windy Ridge Bakery, where I purchased enormous croissants and doughnuts for breakfast, and to the Windy Ridge Café, where I picked-up dinner for four (for under $30—one of the best deals in town). One day our boys skied to the town lift and met my husband and me for lunch at the ideally situated Bridge Café and Grill. While we visited some favorites from last year, such as Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and the Lion House Pantry, we discovered other new gems, such as Squatters Roadhouse Grill, which offers fine food and craft beer at reasonable prices. I had purchased lift ticket vouchers from Costco last year, but they weren’t available this season. This year, the EpicDay lift ticket was the way to go, with discounts applied when purchased online at least a day before skiing; the pass was good for Park City and Canyons, as well as night skiing. Vail Resorts, Inc. plans to connect the two resorts in time for the 2015-16 ski season. We’ve experienced Park City two ways and had a terrific vacation both times.

Horsedrawn carriage tours in Wilmington
hen planning for your next beach getaway, give neighboring Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington, N.C., some of your time out by the water. Just about a half-day’s drive from Atlanta takes you close to breathtaking sunsets and sandy beaches that your family will love indulging in. Fishing piers, a historic downtown, trendy restaurants… all just a stone’s throw away so you can enjoy a variety of vacation experiences in one destination. Whether you are out and about with the kids, traveling with friends or just getting away from it all, coastal North Carolina has you covered. From historic buildings to movie locations, Civil War stories to nightly ghost walks, Wilmington is a city full of surprises and diversity with a charm and style of its own. This historic port city has roots that go back almost three centuries. Every corner you turn reveals something unexpected, especially when you are walking along the historic downtown admiring beautiful locations that might seem mighty familiar, considering the thriving movie industry. A World War II battleship, horse drawn carriages, and splendid museums render this city perfect for a family weekend away. From here, it's easy to get to Wrightsville Beach in minutes. The intra-coastal waterway lends itself to all water sport activities be it swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, fishing, stand up paddling or surfing. For the movie buffs – The presence of EUE Screen Gems Studios has resulted in many movies and TV shows being shot here. Visit the studio’s ten stages during a walking tour of their movie sets and hear about all the productions that have and are currently shooting here. In the city, you can take the Hollywood walking tour and you will recognize many familiar spots from Iron Man to One Tree Hill. For the foodies – Taste Carolinas is a unique walking tasting tour experience you

don’t have the advantage of in other cities but in Wilmington it is available and recommended. Manna and Caprice are other restaurants in the area worth the visit. While one serves new American cuisine, the other is a French bistro with a Belgian twist. In Wrightsville Beach, try the Oceanic, Bluewater Grill or Dockside and be sure to visit Motts Seafood Channel for fresh fish and carefully curated condiments. For the history geeks – Get spooked out already on one of the nightly ghost tours and visit one or more historic homes located in the district. You can also do a walking, horse-drawn carriage or Segway tour of the neighborhood and see the different styles of architecture that make up this diverse community. Other history related attractions are the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History and the Railroad Museum. For the nature nerds – The intra-coastal waterways produce a unique tidal creek ecosystem and you can learn about that at the beautiful Airlie Gardens, which used to be a turn of the century residence. There is also the Wrightsville Beach Scenic tours cruise with Captain Joe where you can do a nature walk on Masonboro Island, the longest undisturbed barrier island ecosystem in southern North Carolina, accessible only by boat. Wondering where to stay? The Graystone Inn close to the historic district is an area bed and breakfast famed for their service, décor, breakfasts and wine hour. Closer to the beach, the Hilton Holiday Inn provides fabulous views and direct access to the water. With so much to offer, how can you really say no to a destination getaway like Wilmington? Of course, if you choose to spend all your time at the beach in Wrightsville, nobody will blame you.

Buckhead Tech Entrepreneur Streamlines Shipping With Neighborly App Article Debra Caron
F
ifteeen-year Buckhead resident Marc Gorlin is a true community man and a tech entrepreneur with a knack for challenging giant industries -- and the status quo -- by thinking about things a little differently. Marc is one of the proud natives left in Atlanta and has started multiple business locally, including his latest venture. He believes Atlanta is a great place to start a technology company (the region is ripe with access to tech talent, the quality and cost of living are great). Our city is also the perfect place to contribute to the shipping industry, which originally exploded in 1837 when Atlanta was first dubbed "Terminus" with the birth of America's first east to midwest railway in Five Points. Marc has a comfortable, folksy way of talking about his newest start-up, an application-based shipping community called Roadie, an idea which came to Gorlin in early 2014 when he was trying to get some replacement tile from Birmingham to his condo in Perdido Key on Friday, even though the next FedEx delivery wasn’t until Monday. “I knew there was someone heading my way from Birmingham that very moment, and if I just knew who they were, surely they’d let me throw a box of tile in their trunk. And I’d gladly pay them $20 for helping me out,” says Gorlin. “And then it struck me…there’s an invisible grid under all of our feet made up of the patterns and places we go every day, driving to work, on vacation and just running errands. There’s literally a billion square feet of excess capacity moving along that grid every single day. If we could just reveal the grid and make it easy for people to plug into it, we could solve a lot of the shipping industries current challenges, and make the world a better, greener, friendlier place.” So, how does the first neighbor-to-neighbor shipping network compete with traditional carriers like FedEx and the U.S. Post Office? Well, everything starts with a mobile app. Senders post details and pictures of the items they want to send. Roadie drivers who are heading that direction respond based on location and timing with their availability to deliver. Roadie fees are calculated based on mileage, size and other factors, and range from $8 to $150, with no bidding, bartering or in-person exchange of cash. The Roadie app enables efficient, low-cost delivery for senders and rewards drivers for trips they were already taking, including cash and a variety of benefits like free roadside assistance, roadside discounts of food and gas, and tax write-offs on miles they were already driving. The company recently announced a partnership with Waffle House as its

first official “Roadhouse,” allowing Roadie drivers and senders to meet at one of 1,750 convenient Waffle House locations in 25 states Marc Gorlin of Buckhead to exchange packages and grab a plate of smothered and covered hashbrowns while they’re at it. The idea of “carpooling for cargo” may sound simple enough, but many believe it’s an idea that has the potential to disrupt the $90B shipping industry, just as Uber, Airbnb and other socalled sharing economy companies have done in the hotel and transportation industries. Just two months after launch, Roadie has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, The Today Show, Forbes, Fortune, Fast Company, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! Even more surprising, perhaps, the start-up has received more than $10 million in series A funding from a host of who’s who in the venture community, including a surprising backer, Atlanta’s own UPS. “UPS continues to invest in innovation,” says Rimas Kapeskas, managing director of the UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund. “We believe that mobile and the sharing economy are active spaces, generating many creative and intriguing business models, like Roadie. Our Strategic Enterprise Fund is all about staying connected to evolving business models and new technologies.” As an involved member of his community, Marc supports the University of Georgia Hartman foundation among other charities. Marc attended Chamblee Charter High School and the University of Georgia, where he remains an avid Bulldog fan and attends most home games. Whenever he gets a chance, he heads just north of Brookhaven to eat at his favorite Mexican restaurant in Chamblee, El Torero. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 Sedan Well red Article and Photography Dennis Malcolm Byron
S
traight to the point, the all-new 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS400 is a gorgeous piece of art. Set off with the automaker’s signature designo® Cardinal Red, this coupe’s Diamond Radiator Grille, 19-inch twin five-spoke wheels, power folding mirrors, multi-beam LED headlamps with active curve illumination (they automatically adjust at turns), and sleek body frame further solidify its refined classification as luxurious. Interior décor flaunts plush black semi-aniline leather (to help maintain the hide’s natural sheen), “Black Ash” wood trim, and dash showcasing the navigation, and what we really appreciated—the surround view camera system. And actually driving it? Due to the 3.0 liter V-6 Biturbo engine roaring with 329 horsepower and 7-speed automatic transmission complemented by shift paddles; active parking assist; Distrotronic Plus with steering assist; and active multicontour driver’s seat which actually embraces you during cornering, even a quick errand to the market will be a pleasure. Oddly—in a good way—with all its power, the CLS400’s combined 24 miles to the gallon becomes even more pocket friendly with the ECO Start/Stop option which temporarily shuts the car off during extended idling to conserve fuel. Starting at a modest $65,990 with Bluetooth and numerous safety features included (adaptive brake technology), the optional Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby 5.1 ($1,610); Premium Package ($6,900); Parking Assist Package ($1,290); and Driver Assistance

Ultimately, whether standard or enhanced to the max, the 2015 CLS400 effortlessly reaches the standards of any driver who demands only the finest craftsmanship to enhance their driving experience. Parting Thoughts
A Family That Travels Together Words Robin Conte
M
y husband and I had the wanderlust before we met. He had lived and studied in Zurich, Switzerland, after college; I had lived and studied in Venice, Italy, during college. We each took the opportunity while in Europe to travel the Old World. He learned German, I learned Italian, and we traveled, getting around the continent bilingually, with scraps of French or Spanish thrown in every so often. We stayed in youth hostels and traveled by rail. We learned the cost and time-saving benefits of popping down the cabin seats to form a makeshift bed and waking up the next morning in a new country. We understood the Thomas Cook timetable so well that we could jump off a train on one platform and catch a train on another in seconds before its departure. We were able to recognize nuanced changes in architecture and landscape as the scenery rushed by outside the train windows. We slept in dorm style rooms and bunked next to people from every continent. Through our experiences, we developed confidence, perspective and flexibility. Travel changed us, and we let it.
We met, joined forces and traveled together. We spent our honeymoon on a two-week trip through the Canadian Rockies. We canoed and camped in the Okefenokee Swamp; we took a 10-day rafting trip on the wild Tatshenshini River in Canada and Alaska. We went to the Caribbean for scuba diving and to the mountains for backpacking. Then we had kids. But that didn’t stop us. Have kids? Will travel. We plopped our first-born into a baby backpack and took him with us to the Cayman Islands, Tortola and Great Britain before he was a year old. I have a “places I have nursed” section in our photo album. The second child didn’t slow us down much, either; we could work with a 1:1 ratio. With the birth of twins, however, the number of offspring grew exponentially, and our style was under the threat of being cramped. So we busted out of the box: we packed up our whole crew and moved to Europe. We lived, worked and went to school in Munich, and we traveled the continent by planes, trains and minivans. Our children joined us in navigating transit stations, deciphering schedules and translating. They learned to pull their own weight (literally), all of them toting their own backpacks and rolling suitcases. They became comfortable in new environments and became independent travelers in their own right. Then they grew and went even further afield, always making an effort to learn the language, appreciate the culture, and respect the people of their host country. One studied in Lebanon and Russia, navigating the souk in Byblos and the bridges of St. Petersburg. One lived and studied in Chile, taking university courses in Spanish. The younger two are becoming proficient in languages, in anticipation of their own future travels. Our children have developed perspective, grown in confidence and learned flexibility. Because travel changes you, if you let it.
