Editor’s Letter
Hello, Buckhaven.
november 2014
I
f I had a buck for every time I moved since I met my husband, I’d be rich. Well, just short of a twenty, anyways. We met in Marblehead, MA (1 home); moved to St. Thomas, USVI (4); to Southampton, England (3); to Hong Kong (1); back to Marblehead (2); to Ann Arbor, MI (2) then to Atlanta (4. Yes, 4. Make that 5 - we move Friday). We’re not vagabonds. But, we’re not afraid of boxes, cleaning out closets, Craigslist sales or address change forms. We like trying different lifestyles and for now, we love being renters. Yes, tenants! We’ve owned homes on two continents and are thrilled to call someone else when the roof or refrigerator leaks. Not holding our breath as the real estate market dips and climbs gives us more energy for things like watching the sun set and...packing.
What all this mobility has meant for us is priceless. We have friends dotting the globe - and in-town Atlanta neighborhoods. We don’t get bogged down with out-of-style winter coats or chip bowls shaped like football stadiums. We greet the fellows at the Goodwill like long lost friends and regularly purge. It feels so good. Our kids are not pack rats. They enjoy making their rooms their own. Often. They know a house is not a home until we say it is.

The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership launched a campaign that gives BeltLine enthusiasts the opportunity to own a part of the project’s history, while also helping build its future. The rails that once lined the 22-mile loop of the Atlanta BeltLine were essential to the city which functioned as a transportation center for the southeast. When the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership reached out to Nebo, an Atlanta-based digital marketing agency, for help reaching their fundraising goals, Nebo looked to local sculptor Jason Smith, who used the original historic rails to create a limited edition symbol of support. into an innovative work of art, expressing both individualism and a sense of community. Make the artwork collaborative, interactive, educational, weather proof and ready to be assembled in three days time by kids. “Each year, our high school conducts ‘Excursion,’ a selection of hands-on, in-depth learning experiences that take students beyond the classroom ñ and take learning beyond the ordinary,” explains Isaac Ramsey, Galloway’s theater technical director and designer. “This year, we wanted to link one of our Excursion options to the Art on the Atlanta Beltline project, giving students the opportunity to participate in both the urban redevelopment aspect and in the sense of community the initiative is helping build.” The idea is for Beltline visitors to choose a pillar, write their personal “key” to achieving that pillar’s objective on a dowel rod and place it into a keyhole. Each key, then, brings a new dimension to the piece. For example, Galloway Alexander Nieves ‘17 chose the “fearlessness” pillar and wrote, “Just being myself” on his key. Check out all the Art on the Beltline this month.

rookhaven international realtor, Christian Ross of Christian Sold It and the current (and youngest) president of the Atlanta Chapter of The Women Council of Realtors, made her second appearance on the newest season of HGTV’s “House Hunters” in September. Christian is becoming a media go-to source in network programming. She and her husband live right here in Brookhaven and she has been working with her team of nine years to provide commercial and residential real estate services to clients in Brookhaven, Buckhead and beyond. During her first appearance on the popular HGTV show, she helped an unreasonable buyer find a new home at $40k, and in the September episode, she helped her clients, world travelers Fabio and Rafaelle, upgrade to a new condo. While they both loved the modern look, Rafaelle also enjoys homes with some European charm. They wanted to find a place with a view as well as some green space for their dog, Ultimo. They also needed a guest room when Fabio’s parents come to visit, and they want to make sure they are in within walking distance to the train station and shops and restaurants. With Christian’s personal experience living and working in the area 12

they scored an adorable apartment in Midtown and their episode was a success. Christian has lived in Atlanta more than 16 years, dotting the in-town map with homes in Buckhead, Grant Park, Downtown and up to Sandy Springs. She has lived in Brookhaven the last four years with her husband, returning after a few years in Buckhead where the volume and noise of construction drove them back to their favorite Brookhaven neighborhood. “We love it! The best things about living in Brookhaven is the convenience. You are close to highways, shopping, eateries and more. Without traffic, it takes me 10 minutes to get to Midtown or South Buckhead,” says Christian. “It is the best of both worlds - being close to the city’s offerings without the direct congestion. There is also a sense of community with that sentiment growing more and more.” She shops locally too, frequenting Brookhaven Home, The Mercantile and the antique shops in Chamblee. “I am choosing wallpaper now from Brookhaven Home!” She and her husband grab dinner at Verde, Smash, Haven or Bua Thai & Sushi and enjoy taking out-of-town guests to the The 57th Fighter Group Restaurant or NY Prime.

Contemporary Jewelry Show Moves up to Atlanta History Center Article Ben Hammett Walkuski | Photography Provided
T
he Atlanta History Center is about to be crowned by 30 of the country’s finest contemporary jewelry artists. For the first time ever in its seven-year history, the annual Atlanta Contemporary Jewelry Show (ACJS) will present its yearly display of handcrafted pieces of work at the Atlanta History Center, in the heart of historic Buckhead. Running just two days, November 7 and 8, the show aims to foster an understanding and appreciation of artist-designed and made contemporary fine craft jewelry in Atlanta through the presentation of work by the country’s most accomplished jewelry artists. Debra Lynn Gold of Buckhead is one of those jewelry artists. This award-winning jewelry designer, fine craft show exhibitor and arts organizer is a director of the ACJS. When she’s not exhibiting her work in shows or galleries nationwide, Debra is a frequent craft show juror, national conference organizer and teacher, at the Art Institute of Atlanta and the Chastain Arts Center. For Debra, jewelry is fundamental—and instinctual. 14

“The drive to self adorn is as old as man - and woman! Early man celebrated his hunting skills by sporting his saber tooth tiger teeth around his neck. Today we celebrate our special occasions similarly with a piece of jewelry, albeit a bit more sophisticated! “Whether it’s marking special occasions, celebrating someone we love, or merely responding to that urge to self adorn, jewelry plays an important role in all of our lives,” Debra says. “Owning a piece of jewelry leads to owning two pieces, to owning three pieces, and soon enough it’s called a ‘collection’. There’s no better way to collect jewelry AND to express oneself than by collecting jewelry made by artists.” The museum-caliber jewelry art that you will find at the ACJS makes the Atlanta History Center the ideal venue to display and celebrate such works—only at this show, guests can purchase and take home their favorite pieces. Your $10 admission to the ACJS includes entrance to the History Center’s exhibits as well. Consid-
er making a full day of it, strolling the 33 acres of woodland garden at the History Center. Leigh Griffin is also a director of ACJS. Somewhat to her own surprise, Leigh’s 17 years as a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines serves as a basis for her work as a jewelry artist. “While traveling around the world I took an interest in gemstones, picking up a few here and there to remind me of the various countries I visited,” Leigh says. “At the time, I just thought they were fun and beautiful to look at and collect. Little did I know that one day gemstones would be my main inspiration for making art jewelry.” “Atlanta has been the perfect city to introduce an appreciation of art jewelry to a growing audience,” Leigh explains. “The artists are from all over the country and beyond and present a panorama of styles and techniques. Each artist has a different and unique expression of his or her own. There is something for everyone exhibited at ACJS. ‘This year, our move from the DeFoor Centre to The Atlanta History Center comes at a great time. After seven years we have a loyal and growing following. At the History Center, in the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, we will reach an ever-expanding audience that will have an opportunity to experience this wonderful collection of unique art and artists.”

Portrait Perfect: Maisie Thompson Article Ruksana Hussain I PHOTOGRAPHY provided
A
s we get closer to the holiday season, pictures and portraits of family and loved ones take up a lot of thought and planning. But a charcoal portrait is sure to hold your attention, yes? Much as we live in a world filled with color, there is something about images in black and white that always stays with us. Suffice to say you don’t have to look very far to have one made. Buckhead resident Maisie Thompson specializes in charcoal and pen portraiture for pets and children. Glance at the detail you see on each piece and you won’t need more convincing! Armed with a studio arts degree from the University of Georgia, Maisie embarked on a life changing journey to Africa in 2008 where she found her real passion in art - the raw human connection. Fired up with this new discovery, she took to portraiture while traveling across Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Uganda, creating high contrast, minimalistic but detailed
charcoal portraits that capture the subject’s soul through their eyes. “I took pictures of the children I met there and made portraits from those, I have been inspired since. The eyes are the feature that attract me the most,” says Maisie. During a period of prolonged illness, Maisie indulged in her new love for portraiture and found it a therapeutic endeavor. Once recovered, she decided to pursue her new passion with gusto and has regaled in portraits of everything from newborns and new homes to families and newly weds. “I found it forgiving to work with charcoal at first but then fell in love with it and just carried on,” she shares. Maisie encourages one on one sessions with her subjects, especially when she can be there in person to take the pictures she needs to get working on a portrait. (Photography sessions are included in the portrait price and clients also get a CD of the images) The process from start to finish includes editing the photo, making it lighter to bring out contours, enlarging it for detail and laying the foundation for different features to bring the exercise full circle. Depending on the amount of detail etched into each commissioned piece and the size requested, a portrait could take any where from a few hours to a whole day to complete. Maisie personally delivers portraits to clients in the Atlanta area and loves watching the expression on peoples’ faces when they receive her work. “I enjoy the personal relationships that come with being a commission artist and recognize continued >

that each project is unique and special to my client,” she adds. On working with pets and children, she suggests a no-hassles approach. Since Maisie does everything from taking pictures on location to delivering them personally, clients have nothing to worry about. Portrait sessions don’t need much attention in terms of background or attire since the focus is the subject’s face and their features. “Charcoal portraits are unique and timeless - that’s why I love doing them. They are meaningful and intimate. While it is technically difficult to do a portrait from an unclear picture, my work is 90% emotional. It is emotionally difficult to work with a portrait when the subject is someone who has passed away. I feel privileged and honored to be entrusted with the responsibility of keeping a dear ones memory alive, that’s when I feel my perfectionism is called upon and put to test.” Price: $300-$600 but special requests or custom projects priced individually Size: 14x17 to 24x36 most requested but other sizes accepted Delivery: If outside Atlanta, portraits shipped in retentive wrapping with option for framing

nterior designers are known for their impeccable taste in furnishings. As experts of the subtleties of fine living, they often wear their work. Michel Boyd, Michael Habachy and furniture designer Beau Champ are celebrities in the world of interiors. Each bringing their own sense of style to an industry ruled by privacy and exclusivity, these gentlemen make the business of home dĂŠcor look like one big soiree. Dressed to the nines in anything from vintage clothes to Ferragamo shoes, they live and breathe luxury. The talented trio sat down with Buckhaven Lifestyle to reveal how fashion influences taste inside and outside of the home.
Meet Michael Habachy Mention the name Michael Habachy among the style tribes of Buckhead and you will immediately hear songs of his praise. His edge for modern style has afMichael Habachy's modern palate (right)

forded him an A-list clientele including NFL players, music executives and upscale nightspots Vanquish Lounge and Reign Night Club on Peachtree. Habachy is still up his old tricks at Habachy Designs, putting a new spin on the Rose Bar in Buckhead and attending to his celebrity following. His minimalist taste and love of exclusive spaces makes him the number one pick for anyone vying to impress Atlanta’s young and fabulous. PW: How does fashion influence your work as an interior designer? MH: I enjoy pulling together an outfit as much as I enjoy a pulling together a beautiful room. The same practice that applies to fashion applies to interiors. I consider myself a tailor for the home. Just like you layer in fashion; you layer in the home. PW: Describe some layering in the home. MH: We use custom rugs cut precisely for the room; that’s one layer. People who want modern don’t need too much. Something like pillows and throw rugs; that’s one more layer. We can contrast smooth with texture, or glass with matte. I will use tweed on sofa with a polished leather chair next to it. PW: Tell us about the redesign of the Rose Bar? MH: We are hoping to make it fabulous. The design concept is a garden at midnight. We’re incorporating pops of color behind the bar to make it look like a rainforest. There are going to be flowers blooming and amazing murals. The tag is “Only the rare and exotic bloom at night.” What we love about night clubs and the entertainment industry is you get to push the envelope of what you normally can’t do in a home.
Meet Beau Holland Beau Holland, chief creative officer of Beau Studio at ADAC, is a man’s man. Crafting leather pieces, he keeps his style simple and well worn. Holland’s furniture can be described as traditional combined with a comfortable personal style. continued >

“The closet lets you know who this person is in furniture language. The armor we show people and who we are inside doesn’t always match.” -- Michel Boyd PW: How would you describe your style as a furniture designer? BH: I think I would be sophisticated, but welcoming. I like things that look worn like an old friend. PW: How do you approach the task of designing a piece of furniture? BH: We use a lot of textures. We make furniture that has an appearance of an aged look. Like an old friend. We use distressed leather and we distress it once it’s wrapped around the frame. Typically we have the best success when we take a traditional set of lines and produce it in a non-traditional way. It may have a familiar shape, but made with a non-traditional reclaimed wood. PW: How do you approach fashion? BH: One of my favorite places to shop is Clothing Warehouse. I like vintage clothing. Boots are my favorite fall winter must have. Everyone needs a pair of well-worn boots. I try and stay out of blazers. I don’t wear coats. A pullover or anorak is fine with me.
ed.” That is my new buzzword. I love vintage refurbished looks. A home should not be all new. If you travel all over the world and come from an old family your home should reflect those things. When I go to my tailor for suits, I pull from Holland & Sherry Interiors. I can make you a bed cover or a pair of pants. I’m obsessed with textiles. Fashion forecasts interiors, but interiors are usually a year or so behind. Like the floral trend; most people look at it and don’t like it, but I incorporated in a wall space. I also love using silk wall paper; it’s a subtle luxury. It gives off warmth and most people can feel it, but don’t know why. PW: Why is fashion so important to you? MB: Before you know what I do I need to look like I know what I’m talking about. I like classic suits and classic cars and I love the idea of presenting myself in that way. It diffuses a lot with the business. I want

to set an example. It’s something to aspire to and I am always aspiring to be better. I believe in presenting inspirational work. PW: How do you learn about your clients? MB: The closet lets you know who this person is in furniture language. The armor we show people and who we are inside doesn’t always match. Home should be like a destination and I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t push my clients a bit and show them things they’ve never seen before. After a job is complete I may get a text from a client holding up two ties asking me to choose which one looks better.
Meet Michel Boyd Michel Boyd, principal designer and owner of Smith Boyd Interiors, created a thriving brand by working his way up from Nordstrom in New York City and finally settling in Atlanta. A celebrity among the elite of Buckhead and Brookhaven, you can find Boyd rubbing elbows with Atlanta socialites at exclusive parties or sitting VIP at the BET Awards in L.A. He is considered the face of ADAC, in Buckhead and is currently designing a space at the Savoy in Brookhaven. PW: How does fashion influence your design style? Bringing a taste of Asia where they lived for 15 years, and also of their former home in Australia, these well traveled Atlanta homeowners and their two children became excited about renovating an existing home in Buckhead that was featured in the film “Driving Miss Daisy.” The 1970’s house was dark and compartmentalized and the vision was to keep the vintage appeal but infuse
it with an international and more contemporary aesthetic with the help of designer, Pipa Bradbury Ginschel. The view to the gardens and pool were lost in a sea of walls. An entire new wing was built onto the existing home, the existing garage was converted into a living room, opening the view to the garden with new eight foot French doors. All the hallways were widened so that views to the outside were always available upon
entering the home. The family entrance through the vestibule between garage and home looks out onto delightful pavers that walk you through lush landscaping to the pool at the back. Custom sliding walnut and bronze framed doors in the kitchen, the home’s heart, are now centered on frameless glass panels extending out to the pool area, when opened the transition between inside and outside become seamless.

SC: What are today’s trendiest colors and accent pieces? JM: Color is making a comeback! Black, navy and gray supplement white for neutrals and vibrant tones of colors – particularly purple, turquoise and tangerine provide contrast and interest. Careful use of pastels provides additional depth. Rustic wood and animal motifs have been popular for a while, but I’m seeing more metal pieces and geometric motifs make an appearance SC: Where do you find your inspiration? JM: Fashion and home trends domestically and internationally inspire me to create unique spaces that speak to the client. I frequently use Houzz and House & Home Magazine for insight and new ideas. 28
BuckHavenLifestyle.com | November 2014
SC: Where locally do you like to shop for your own home? JM: World Market and Home Goods are great for those everyday uses and accents. I also use AmericasMart downtown and boutiques such as The Mercantile in Brookhaven and Nadeau in Peachtree Hills. SC: What are a few things homeowners should consider when choosing an interior designer? JM: Personality, goals and timeline are three elements that can greatly impact the relationship with your designer. Make sure you can talk freely and agree on a shared vision for the space. Also be sure to discuss expectations of time so that busy schedules or long ordering delays don’t throw a wrench in the project down the line.
SC: The holidays are coming. We need some tips! JM: 1. Don’t be afraid to go glam or charmingly simple. Holidays are all about transformation so feel free to create a new type of space that you wouldn’t normally live in. 2. Invest in pieces that overlap seasons – fall leaves and pumpkins can carry you from September to November, while red berries last through February. 3. Vary décor height for a collected, three dimensional feel. Building your holiday look with garlands, figurines and art creates an effect that draws you into the season.

The all-new 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith

Rolls-Royce sports its newest family member in grand fashion Article and Photography Dennis Malcolm Byron
A
fter driving the newest edition from one of the world’s most prestigious automakers throughout the environs of Sea Island, Georgia, the all-new 2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith quickly became the weekend’s phenomenon. The Wraith— Rolls-Royce’s closest interpretation of a “sports” car due its flawless fusion of power, nimble suspension, and elegance—consistently dropped the jaws of onlookers who caught one of the first glimpses of this model in the U.S. Imported this year after the craftsmanship from 60 pairs of hands that literally built this model from the ground up at Rolls-Royce’s state-of-the-art factory in Goodwood, England (the only robot used was to apply the body’s paint), the Wraith is based on the larger bodied Ghost coupe, but with only two rear-hinged doors, more
responsive handling, and a significant engine boost at 624 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged, V-12, 48-valve engine to name a few alterations. One of the main purposes of this new family addition was not only to provide existing customers with something different from the Phantom and Ghost series; the Wraith also demonstrates Rolls-Royce’s recognition of the burgeoning sector of successful entrepreneurs in their late 30s to 40s. Hence, we have their fastest and most technologically advanced car to date. Standout advancements include the Satellite Aided Transmission which automatically adjusts the car’s ride to approaching road conditions via their GPS and navigation system; and the activation of the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller for menu options with a mere continued >

Buying Fine Art for Your Home Listen to the Art...and Experts Article Ruksana Hussain | Photography Courtesy of Alan Avery Art Company and Pryor Fine Arts
B
uying fine art for your personal space can be an overwhelming experience. We checked in with fine art experts Susie Pryor of Pryor Fine Arts and Alan K. Avery, owner of Alan Avery Art Company in Buckhead, for their thoughts on the matter. Pryor fills the 5,500 square feet gallery on Miami Circle with original art. Avery’s gallery, celebrating 37 years, is one of the Southeast’s oldest surviving. Both chimed in with some valuable tips to help your art purchasing endeavors become seamless rather than stressful. Susie, herself an accomplished artist, encourages us to take the first step and shop around our community’s many varied galleries. “You do not need a designer or art consultant to visit galleries or buy fine art for your home or office. Most if not all galleries are open to the public, so get out and have fun checking out the local galleries.” In beginning to explore your options, Alan reminds us to buy what we genuinely like. “Buying art is a personal experience. If your first reaction to a work of art is that it is pretty, then stop right there because you will one day grow tired of it. But if you see a piece that challenges you then think about buying it for your long-term enjoyment. A work of art should do more than just look pretty. It should cause a reaction within the viewer.” Susie agrees. “Collecting art for the home should be less about decorating and more about the intuitive connection one feels when encountering a work of art.” Alan also notes the importance of the
variety. “Avoid the pitfall of purchasing one type of medium. Mix it up.” Also, matching artwork to your interior will make the space bland. “Artwork can fit in the realm of those interiors but if homogenous, then it will become boring,” he warns. Once you have Susie Pryor, Pryor Fine Arts decided to pursue While art is often considered mysteartwork for your collection, visiting an actual gallery space is important to help you riously priced, it is actually just like most understand the textural and composition- other beautiful objects. “First, supply and demand is the overaral elements of the work. A gallery’s website can be your initial point of contact to help ching price criteria; second is the level of you understand what is offered and to help establishment; third is time and materials involved in creating a work of art,” Susie find artists you like. Then, contact the staff from the gallery says. “Depending on these three factors, a to connect with the owner or director. Be collector can pay anywhere from $500 to willing to discuss openly with the gallery $50,000 for a painting by a living artist.” Art need not be an elitist-only purchase. staff what you like and don’t like. They are there to assist and educate you. Another It is possible to find works of art that you important aspect to note is that galleries like, that work with your interior and at a don’t just host limited duration shows but price point you desire. “If you want to build a collection of value also carry extensive inventory by all the artists they represent. Therefore, what and not simply decorate your home, puryou’re looking for may not be on the floor, chasing works with substance can help you to build not only an aesthetically pleasing but could be tucked away in storage. And, relax. A popular misconception is group of works, but also your investment that you will be pressured into purchasing portfolio,” says Alan. “Research dealers when in an art gallery. trusting relationship. Look at the artist bio to see who else is collecting their work. This is a great first step in understanding if the artist’s work is worth pursuing further.” Once you have found something that speaks to you, financing options may be available. Be up front and talk to the dealer. Do understand that art galleries work on very tight margins. Asking for discounts is frowned upon for this reason. Ethical galleries do not mark up artwork in order to give discounts. Be sure to discuss your options in the event you need to sell your purchase down the road. A reputable dealer will have a plan in place and will be happy to discuss your options. Buy what you like, and be aware of value. Always purchase from a reputable dealer, one who can assist you in the learning and purchasing process. As Alan always says, “Art is a commodity like gold or precious gems. Tangible things you can own are not investments - they are commodities. Art has historically weathered recessions, stock market upsets, etc. It is immune to such events and, like gold and precious gems, has only increased in value over the years.” And, buy what you like. Susie says, “The staff can tell you about the artist and technique, but buying for your home is personal, it should expand on the subliminal expression of the collector.” AlanAveryArtCompany.com PryorFineArt.com

Road Trip
Savannah
Staying Sassy in Savannah Article and Photography Ruksana Hussain

f you thought the scene in Savannah was all about the river walk in the oldest city in Georgia, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Gone are the days when this was simply a summer beach getaway, with the added bonus of open container laws. A recent revival has seen brand new businesses setting up shop, more restaurants and attractions than ever before, in a city that celebrates its history as much as its future. Livening up the local skyline is San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants’ latest offering - The Brice. The boutique Rooms at The Brice

hotel is the only Kimpton property in Georgia as the brand expands in the Southeast. The savvy and sassy traveler in you will adore the contemporary, sleek design of this jewel set in the heart of Savannah’s historic district. The building is an adaptive reuse of one of the city’s timeless structures, the Coca-Cola bottling plant originally built in the 1860s. Its eclectic character features larger-than-life horse imagery paying tribute to the livery previously located on the hotel site as well. The 145-room hotel offers guests amenities like yoga mats, free bike rentals and a diverse choice of ready to eat and refrigerated snacks in-room. Tucked in the center of the hotel is the Secret Garden, a private sanctuary, with bar service, of course. For pet-lovers, The Brice welcomes buddies of all breeds, weights and sizes for no additional fees or deposits and on the first Tuesday every month, honors them with a Canines and Cocktails event.
Complimentary coffee and tea for a good four hours each morning is a sure to get you going for the day. The lobby feels like an inviting library with rows of books and newspapers and lends itself well to a daily social hour when guests get a chance to mix and mingle over a glass--or two--of wine in the evening. Appetizers and drinks-to-go are offered up too. Fridays are Bow Tie Fridays, thanks to General Manager Mitch Linder and his slight obsession with this southern statement piece. The Brice is also home to Pacci Kitchen + Bar, a chef-driven Kimpton restaurant and craft cocktail bar. A menu created by locally celebrated Chef Roberto Leoci features sophisticated and soulful Italian cuisine. Try the Fritto Misto with asparagus, flounder and shrimp or the Hunter Ravioli starring beef soaked six hours in red wine. The Coca Cola glazed short ribs pay homage to

featuring Whitfield Lovell’s latest installation Deep River exploring the flight to freedom (until February 2015). Art lovers should positively hit up the Savannah Voice Festival, a celebration of opera, musical theatre and song. Bringing classical vocal excellence to the area through a celebration of concerts, events and educational programming throughout the year, they focus on awareness and audience development in the performing arts. Orchestrated by Sherrill Milnes and Maria Zouves, each season serves over 100 artists, 7000 audience members and 45 events. Oh, and if all of this galavanting around gets too tiring then remember to get some ice cream at Savannah mainstay Leopold’s and head to the Milan Day Spa for some TLC in a calm oasis that also doubles as an art gallery, in the midst of the activity that is Broughton Street. The Jepson Center Using only Eminence handmade organic skincare from Hungary, the award-winning destination sure shows you a good history of the erstwhile bottling plant. They even have a signature time in their cozy hidden spa space. Broughton Street also offers bourbon cola bottled drink you can try only at Pacci. And don’t a booming retail area with cute boutiques and local stores if shopleave without a taste of Bombolini - Italian doughnuts in Leoci’s ping is more your activity of choice but rest assured once inside strawberry rhubarb jam - the perfect itty-bitty pieces of goodness! Milan, you may not want to walk back out again. Enjoy! Just minutes from The Brice, along Habersham, are some of the city’s best restaurants including B.Matthews Eatery, The 5 Spot kitchThe Brice Hotel, en and bar, and Blowin’ Smoke Southern Cantina. The Telfair Acada Kimpton Boutique Hotel emy, Owens-Thomas House and Jepson Center make up the oldest BriceHotel.com 912-238-1200 public art museum in the South. Parting Thoughts
Home Words Molly Williams
T
o those of us who can rattle off the phone number of the first home they lived in, (Willow2-1604) the pull of memory can be powerful and bittersweet. It can shape all our future place wishes, and rarely fades with time. Childhood homes are more than our first stop on this earth. They are where we learn our names, and also who we are. That we are more than just ourselves. We are first part of our family, then our neighborhood, then the community, and hopefully eventually a larger world. My first home was a sturdy ranch in a now aging post-war subdivision. Although it seemed huge and completely familiar to me then, when I drive by it slowly now, it looks like all the other tidy tracts of its era, indistinguishable on its block. Since my first house I have lived in two other homes of my parents, a number of dorm rooms and the sorority house in my college town, six different apartments in Kansas City, and two houses of my own. But nothing has the pull of that first home. In the memory box of that house live the thudding of my brothers roughhousing in the hallway, the smell of my mother’s fresh baked bread, and the taste of the strawberries that escaped under the chain length fence of the sweet elderly neighbors to the rear of us. I can hear my dad whistling his way home in the garage, and the dog’s toenails scratching let me in from the backyard. Although I spent less than 10 years in that house, they were important ones, and they linger long in who I am. My husband and I moved into our current house three months

before our daughter was born. (By the way, visibly pregnant is a great time to move – no one expects you to do anything remotely strenuous.) Although the current plan is to plant the for sale sign as the U-Haul pulls away for college, by then she will have spent her entire childhood in this house. Before I am ready, she will leave this room she made hers at three days old. Its walls have made the paint progression from baby girl pink through tween green to young lady lavender. Here is the hallway where she took her first steps, the bedroom door she slammed with all her 13-year-old fury, and the kitchen counters she no longer needs a stool to reach when we make Christmas cookies. Outside is the rainy sidewalk where she broke her arm on a treacherous two-wheeler since corralled in the shed. The trees she climbed, the playhouse now overgrown with weeds, the block she took long thoughtful walks around. And here the front porch light, under which she may eventually kiss a boy. Wherever we are, she will always have a home, of course. I know my independent girl will make her own lovely world around her. But I am glad we will have given her what my parents gave me. Wherever she lives, she will take with her the memory of home, to be opened over and over again like a gift that never fails to surprise and cheer. Ribbons of memory will wrap her with us, sometimes triggered by nothing more than a never to be forgotten phone number.
