Season's Greetings, Birmingham
There’s a special kind of magic that settles over Birmingham come December. Maybe it’s the twinkle of lights strung across tree-lined streets or the warm scent of cinnamon and cloves drifting from downtown bakeries—or perhaps it’s the people who embody the true spirit of giving right here in The Magic City.
This month, we’re honored to share the stories of some remarkable Holiday Heroes among us—two firefighters who have worked on countless holidays, protecting and serving our community, and Don Lupo, who has dedicated decades to uplifting and supporting our city’s most vulnerable residents. Their work is a powerful reminder that the season’s greatest gifts often come from those who give without expectation, simply wanting to make life a little better for others.
Of course, the holidays wouldn’t be complete without a few sweets. Birmingham’s own recipe developer, Pam Lolley, has shared four festive treats that are simply delicious and easy enough to make with the help of little hands. I couldn’t wait to whip up a batch of the brown butter chocolate chip cookies. While they were cooling, I left the kitchen for a few minutes and returned to find my 3-year-old with chocolate smeared across his face and the most mischievous grin. He had helped himself to not one—but four—of those warm, gooey cookies. I hope your family enjoys them (almost) as much as he did.
In the spirit of making memories, we’ve curated a unique gift guide for every personality on your list, from the adventurer to the homebody. Our locally sourced picks include stylish menswear from Mizzen + Main, elegant jewelry and purses, delightful self-care products from The Retreat, and charming ceramics from Civil Stoneware. You might even spot a little something special for yourself.
And if you’re looking for ways to make a lasting difference through giving, don’t miss our piece on maximizing your legacy impact. It’s a guide to finding ways to give that will resonate long after the decorations come down.
Throughout this season and always, Kali and I are thankful for you, our readers, and each of our advertising partners who make it possible for us to create content that celebrates the city we all call home.
May your holiday season be filled with moments of joy and wonder spent with those you love most—moments that become memories and bring a smile to your face for years to come.
With warm holiday wishes,
December 2024

Making Spirits
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org
BAKING Up MEMORIES
ARTICLE BY BLAIR MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BIRMINGHAM LIFESTYLE
Pam Lolley has spent over 30 years perfecting the craft of baking and recipe development, with 19 of those years at Southern Living. As a recipe tester and developer, Pam created some of the magazine’s most beloved recipes, including several of the Big White Cakes, which have graced its cover numerous times. Before joining Southern Living, Pam owned and operated her own catering and baking business here in Birmingham. Her expertise extends beyond cakes and cookies. While at Southern Living, she became famous for her pancakes, affectionately known as “Pam-cakes.” Her impressive career also includes collaborations with celebrated chefs, like pitmaster Chris Lilly, as well as contributions to Food & Wine, Martha Stewart Living, and AllRecipes, among several other brands. Since retiring, Pam has continued to find joy in baking for special occasions through her homebased operation, “Sweet P’s,” where she makes signature treats like her famous orange rolls.
This month, Pam shares four of her classic Christmas cookie recipes with us, which ran in Southern Living and have delighted home cooks for decades. These cookies are more than just sweet treats—they offer a glimpse into the passion and skill that have made Pam a true legend in the culinary world.

• 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

4. For buttercream, beat butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and 1 teaspoon milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed for consistency.

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1 (4-oz.) semisweet chocolate bar, chopped

BROWN BUTTER CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
“One of my all-time favorite recipes I have ever developed! Who doesn’t love a chocolate chip cookie?”
Ingredients:
• 3/4 cup (6 oz.) salted butter
• 1 cup packed light brown sugar
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 2 tsp. vanilla extract
• 2 1/4 cups (about 9 5/8 oz.) plus 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp. baking soda
• 3/4 tsp. table salt
• 1 (12-oz.) pkg. semisweet chocolate chips
• 1 cup chopped toasted pecans (optional)
Instructions
1. *Brown the butter and pour it into a bowl to cool for about 1 hour.
2. Make the cookie dough by creaming together butter and sugars, then adding the egg and vanilla extract. Combine the dry ingredients—flour, baking soda, and salt—and beat them into the sugar mixture. Fold in the pecans (if using) and chocolate chips.
3. Using a cookie scoop, portion out individual cookies onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
4. Bake the cookies until they’re golden around the edges and the center is no longer glossy.
5. Move the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely—or only slightly if you’re craving a warm cookie.
To brown the butter, melt it in a heavy saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent burning. Maintain even heat for about 6–8 minutes. As the butter melts, bubbles will form. Stir continuously until it turns golden brown. If bubbling makes it hard to see, remove from heat briefly. It should smell nutty. When golden flecks appear, transfer the butter to a bowl immediately to stop cooking. If it’s not browned enough, return to the stove briefly.
RED VELVET CAKE BALLS
“These are so easy—and fun to make with kids!”
Ingredients:
• 1 (15.25-oz.) pkg. red velvet cake mix (such as Duncan Hines)
• 1 cup whole milk
• 1/3 cup (2 2/3 oz.) salted butter, melted
• 3 tsp. vanilla extract, divided
• Vegetable shortening, for pan
• All-purpose flour, for pan
• 1 (8-oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened
• 1/2 cup (4 oz.) salted butter, softened
• 4 cups (about 16 oz.) powdered sugar
• 3 (10-oz.) pkg. white (vanilla-flavored) melting wafers (such as Ghirardelli)
• Red and white sprinkles and sanding sugars
Instructions
1. Make the cake mix by beating the cake mix, milk, melted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla until blended, then continue for 2 minutes on medium speed. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 13- x 9-inch pan.
2. Bake until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean, then cool the cake in the pan before turning it onto a rack to cool completely.
3. Make the cream cheese frosting: Beat cream cheese and softened butter with a heavy-duty stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment on medium speed until creamy. Reduce speed to low, and gradually add powdered sugar and 2 teaspoons vanilla, beating until blended. Increase speed to medium-high, and beat until fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes.
4. Crumble the cooled cake, and mix in 2 cups of frosting, then roll the mixture into 48 balls and place them on baking sheets. Cover and chill for 8 hours or overnight.
5. Melt 1 package of melting wafers in the microwave according to the package directions. Dip each ball into the melted wafers using a fork, allowing the excess to drip off, and transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Immediately sprinkle. Repeat with each ball. Chill until ready to serve.
Holiday Heroes
THESE CITIZENS EMBODY THE MAGIC OF THE SEASON AND THE CITY
Don Lupo
Operations Manager, City of Birmingham
Don Lupo serves the city of Birmingham by taking care of our underprivileged population—something he’s done for over 25 years. “We live in a very special place,” Don says. “Our spirit of generosity can’t be touched. For every bad story you hear in the news, I can tell you 100 good stories.”
Not a year has gone by without Don getting a call the week of Christmas from a mother, hesitantly and apologetically asking for help providing Christmas gifts for her child. “The thing that has always touched me the most,” Don shares, “is that not once, not ever, has a mother asked me for something for herself. Not one mother has ever said, ‘I need a new coat’ or ‘Would you take me shopping?’ Their only interest is making sure that they have something for their children.”
Throughout the holiday season and all year, Don lives by the mantra, “Love thy neighbor, feed the hungry, clothe those who are naked,” which he’s quick to explain he doesn’t do alone. “I’m
just the ugly face and the big mouth,” he jokes. He works with countless citizens that he calls “angels” who provide tangible care for those in need. “We do what we do, and we do it together,” Don says, echoing a sentiment from the 2015 movie Burnt that resonated deeply with him. He adds, “I don’t care who you are. I don’t care what you do. We don’t do anything by ourselves.”
Don will never forget the cold winter night when a fire across the street from Temple Emanu-El left many without shelter. Rabbi Adam Wright arrived at the temple within 10 minutes of Don’s phone call to welcome people inside. He worked with Don and Mayor Woodfin late into the night, insisting that they feed everyone in their beautiful sanctuary. As he left for the night, Rabbi Wright handed Don his personal ring of keys to the temple and said, “Our house is your house.”
“That’s the kind of generous spirit we have here in Birmingham,” Don says quietly. “That’s the magic of The Magic City.”
Logan Whitehead
Firefighter, Paramedic; Mountain Brook Fire Department
For Logan Whitehead, being a firefighter is more than a job—it’s a family legacy. His father dedicated 31 years to this calling, and Logan proudly followed in his footsteps, filling his father’s position at the station when he retired. Now a seasoned firefighter with 10 years under his belt, he makes the most of the holiday season with his wife and daughters, even if he is working on holidays.
Since childhood, Logan has understood the sacrifices that come with the role. “Growing up, we might eat leftovers with Dad the day after Thanksgiving, depending on his shift. And we were always told that Santa came on December 24,” he says, reflecting how his girls are learning to embrace flexible traditions, too. “It’s not always ideal, but it’s what we signed up for, and we make it work.” He noted that firefighters spend a lot of time
together, working 24-hour shifts that add up to a third of their lives. “The people we work with become like a second family.”
Logan recalls his first holiday on duty before he had a family of his own, where he volunteered for the shift. “We responded to a pretty rough call,” he remembers. “Knowing we could be there to help on a day like that—it made the sacrifice worth it.”
Rodney has spent 33 years answering the call of duty no matter the time or season. He has served as a firefighter for the City of Birmingham, the Air National Guard, and the Midfield Fire Department. This year, he worked on Thanksgiving and will be on shift for both Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The holidays are often the busiest time of year for firefighters. While many enjoy these holidays at home, Rodney and his crew continue to serve, sometimes running on little to no sleep. “You may get four hours of sleep, or you may not get any sleep,” he says, but the dedication of his team never wavers.
Rodney May Assistant
Chief
of Operations, State Military Department, 117th Air Refueling Wing
Rodney’s passion for firefighting started young. “I still have a picture I drew when I was in first grade that I found years later,” Rodney shares. “It’s a drawing of a firefighter and a firetruck, and I’d written ‘I want to be a firefighter when I grow up’ on it.” Little did he know then that his dream would become his life’s purpose. “Working for the fire department is a calling in and of itself,” he says.
Rodney has witnessed heartbreaking tragedies, but also the generosity of his fellow firefighters. “I know stations that have pulled together the day after a house fire and pitched in to buy Christmas for a family who lost everything.” He recalls another time that he and his fellow firefighters built a wheelchair ramp for an elderly lady in need. “We had a crew out there on our day off,” he shares. “We weren’t asked to do it. It’s just what we do. You’re a firefighter—on and off the clock.”
Rodney finds his work both meaningful and rewarding. “Seeing the difference you’ve made in somebody’s life, that’s what it’s all about. That’s why you’re there to start with.”

GIVING WITH PURPOSE
Maximizing Impact and Legacy This Holiday Season
“With the right strategy, holiday gifts can truly last a lifetime—and beyond.”
Gift-giving is top of mind during the holiday season— from perfect stocking stuffers to “wow” presents nestled beneath the tree. It’s also a time when many families thoughtfully consider how to make a long-term impact through charitable giving and legacy planning. We consulted the experts at Argent Trust Company for advice on leveraging tools like charitable lead trusts, donor-advised funds, and gifting appreciated assets to maximize the impact of strategic giving.
With the right strategy, holiday gifts can truly last a lifetime—and beyond.
HOW CAN FAMILIES INVOLVE THEIR CHILDREN IN ESTATE PLANNING DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
The holidays provide an excellent opportunity, when families are typically together, to sit down and discuss intentions and ideas around money. Every situation is unique. For some senior family members, charitable gifting is of key importance after their death. For others, it’s about providing financial security for some or all family members. And for others, it’s focused on wealth transfer and protecting assets from spendthrifts, those with special needs, or those with addiction issues. The wonderful thing about trusts is that grantors can use them as blank canvases to outline their wishes, providing for future generations, while also establishing guardrails to ensure funds are not squandered.
IS THE END OF THE YEAR THE BEST TIME FOR CHARITABLE GIVING?
Imagine the budgeting challenges of a scenario where 2/3 of one's income (from work or investments) was paid in November and December annually. Giving throughout the year can really benefit a charity's cash flow.
WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT GIFTING APPRECIATED ASSETS?
Whether it's during the holiday season or any other time of the year, the tax benefit is the same. If your securities have appreciated since you purchased them, you will incur capital gains if you sell them. By donating appreciated assets directly to a charitable organization, you will avoid paying taxes on the gains due if you sold the assets and donated the proceeds from the sale. Additionally, you can take a charitable deduction for the asset's fair market value on the day of your donation.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF MAKING CHARITABLE DONATIONS DIRECTLY FROM AN IRA OR RETIREMENT ACCOUNT?
For retired individuals or couples with money in traditional IRAs, making charitable donations directly from their retirement accounts is not just a good option; it's also a convenient one. Using a qualified charitable distribution, an investor aged 70 and a half or older can give up to $100,000 a year to a 501(c)(3) charitable organization directly from their IRA. If the investor is over 72 years of age and required to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from their IRA, a qualified charitable distribution from the IRA can fulfill the annual RMD requirement.
The distribution is not considered part of the investor's adjusted gross income for tax purposes when the distribution goes directly to the charity of the donor's choice. Thus, the RMD is satisfied and no taxes are due.
WHAT ARE SOME CONSIDERATIONS FOR FAMILIES TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT IS “FAIR” ASSET DISTRIBUTION?
Each family unit is as unique as the activity that generates its wealth. Consider the following real-life scenario:
CONTINUED >
A couple has three children: One is a self-made millionaire, one is a minister, and one is an adult with special needs and limited earning abilities. In determining how to divide wealth “fairly,” some would say the answer is simple: all children receive assets in equal amounts, whether in trust or given outright. For others, the decision is more complicated. Consider:
• Giving money outright to the self-made millionaire might increase their taxable estate and cause significantly larger estate taxes.
• Giving money outright to the minister would allow his family to have a more comfortable lifestyle without the stress of fewer resources for college funding, retirement planning, etc.
• For the child with special needs, a Special Needs Trust is often the best choice. This trust can offer the flexibility to provide additional support for the child while still allowing them to qualify for governmental programs, providing a sense of security and hope for their future.
WHAT IS A CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST?
A charitable lead trust is an irrevocable trust that, under the terms of the trust document, distributes assets (gifted to the trust) at a specified rate to named charities for a specified number of years. At the end of the term, the assets return to the grantor or the named remainder beneficiaries (i.e., heirs or children of the grantor).
The trustee of the charitable lead trust receives the gifted property, which could be cash, marketable securities, closely held business interest, or another asset. The gift is irrevocable as the donor is no longer in control of the assets or disposition of the asset.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST?
One of the key appeals of a charitable lead trust is that the donor can receive deductions on certain taxes. The lower the federal interest rate, the lower the 7520 rate – and the greater the potential tax savings, which could be either current income tax or future gift or estate tax.
Additionally, because of the way it is structured, a charitable lead trust can be an ideal solution to support, for an extended period of time, the charities that are near and dear to your heart – and still provide for your heirs and loved ones at a later date. And, if managed prudently, the value of the remaining assets could be worth more than what was initially contributed.
A donor-advised fund can also be used in combination with a charitable lead trust. The donor can specify that the donor-advised fund is the charitable beneficiary, which allows the donor to have input over the funds during and after the term of the charitable lead trust.
TELL US MORE ABOUT DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS…
Charitably minded investors can open and fund a donor-advised fund with cash or other assets and then later decide when the money will be distributed and to which charities. Although the donor relinquishes control of the funds permanently, they receive a tax deduction for the gift immediately, even if they haven't chosen a recipient yet. A useful strategy in some circumstances is to place multiple years of future charitable contributions in a DAF in one calendar year in order to optimize the tax benefit of deducting charitable contributions.
“It’s also a time when many families thoughtfully consider how to make a long-term impact through charitable giving and legacy planning.” “

Hair as Art
For Arcadia Salon's Mary Fulton, hair is more than a style—it’s an expression of creativity and personal flair. Clients come to Mary eager to experiment with new looks for everyday wear and special occasions. Mary’s talent lies in her technical expertise and ability to inspire bold choices, helping clients find the perfect balance between daring and classic.
MARY’S ARTISTIC JOURNEY
Mary’s hairstyling journey began in high school, where she styled herself and friends for events like homecomings and weddings. Although she started with a business degree, her passion for hairstyling drew her back. “Every day is different, and each person is a new canvas,” she says.
Mary’s approach to hair is rooted in experimentation. She doesn’t believe in a onesize-fits-all method, preferring to create her own techniques—including her signature balayage process. “Hair coloring is kind of like Tetris, but not exactly,” she explains, noting that it’s both an art and a science. “You have to know what the sections will look like when it all falls together.”
Mary has trained the entire Arcadia staff in her techniques. “She freely shares her skills, helping others become stronger, more capable stylists,” says owner Christie White.
STYLING HOW-TOS
When it comes to trying new styles, Mary encourages people to take risks. “Honestly, I’d just say go for it. What’s the worst that can happen? You don’t like it? Then, just try something else. Hair is a personal expression, but it’s also temporary. Don’t be afraid to have fun and play with your look.”
“EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT , AND EACH PE RSON IS A NEWCANVAS . ”
Mary advises matching your hairstyle to your outfit. “With necklines above the collarbone, I pull my hair up; for lower necklines, wearing it down gives a softer, more romantic look.”
For parties and special events, Mary recommends balancing statement accessories with understated hair. “Big earrings go with soft waves tucked behind the ear.” Conversely, if you’re keeping jewelry minimal, play up the hair. “Bigger curls and opposite-direction waves add movement and make the look dynamic,” she explains. For added volume and hold, she suggests Davines Dry Texturizer Finishing Spray. “It gives great texture without feeling crunchy, and it smells like candy!”
For Mary, hair is an art form, and the salon is her studio. “I have a different person in my chair every half hour, and I’m always doing something new. Sometimes, clients come in and say, ‘Do whatever
you want,’ and that’s when I can really get creative,” she shares. This trust allows Mary to craft some of her most exciting and daring looks. “I’ve had a client say, ‘If you tell me I need purple hair, I’m getting purple hair.’”
PERSONALIZING THE LOOK
Mary’s artistic eye helps her determine the perfect look for each client. “I’ll consider their face shape, skin tone, and natural hair tones. It’s all about blending and complementing, even as the style grows out.”
For Mary, hairstyling is a way to impact her clients’ lives. “I love making someone’s day better by helping them feel good about what they see in the mirror. “Feeling confident about your appearance is important, and it’s fulfilling to help people embrace that confidence.”
Whether she’s crafting a romantic updo or experimenting with bold colors and textures, Mary’s artistry shines through in every style she creates—and every client is a new opportunity to create something beautiful.
