oulder has long been a hub for women-led businesses, non-profit organizations, and all around rear kickers. A recent Forbes magazine article (December 2014) even went so far as dubbing Boulder the "world leader for women entrepreneurs." Whether raising startup capital, or investing in the education of underprivileged youth, the women in Boulder have a fire and determination that is second to none. In this issue, we have the joy of spotlighting several of these impactful ladies. My only regret is that we don't have an unlimited page count to feature every one of the deserving women that live amongst us. One of these is my wife and business partner, Kate. She is far too humble to ever talk about herself, so I am now taking the liberty to brag about her amazing accomplishments. At age 20, Kate Schowengerdt finished cosmetology school in Scottsdale and wanted to learn modern hair style from one of the best in the country. On her own dime, she packed up her 1996 Isuzu Amigo (now extinct) and set out for Los Angeles. Within 12 months, she ascended from unpaid intern at Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills, to a personal stylist for one of Hollywood's most sought after actresses. Missing her family in the Midwest, combined with a little divine intervention because she had a boy to meet there, Kate moved back to Kansas City. Starting from scratch yet again, she introduced herself to many local retail industry business professionals and acquired an impressive client list. It was about that time she met a guy who was coming off a three-year ski tour in Vail. After our first date, I called my mother and told her that I had found my future wife. Six months later a new sign hung over an old brick building off Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza: "Kate Manz Salon." After becoming one of the most in-demand hair colorists in the city, Kate (by then age 25) opened a blow dry bar directly above the salon. In 2013, Kate was able to successfully broker the sale of both salons so we could move our young family to Boulder County and start Boulder Lifestyle magazine. At this point, her true awesomeness was on display, as we had a 3-year-old son, a 2-year-old daughter and a third child on the way. Through all of her success, Kate has carried herself with humility, gratitude and always puts her family first. For that, I am most impressed. No matter the title at the front of the name, there is something unique about the calm confidence of a successful woman. Boulder County women are definitely in a class of their own.

I am the mother of a very energetic 30-month-old son…and wife to an equally energetic 422-month-old husband. Fun fact: From 2005-2007, I was the morning talk show host on “Wake the Hell Up” for the world’s first internet television network, ManiaTV! But one of my proudest career moments was when I was the PR manager at Elitch Gardens and I named the water slide, Tube Top. I can’t wait to take my son on it and say, “That’s right, son. Your mom named this ride.” Oh, and in case you were wondering, I can’t get a blueberry out of a toddler’s nose using tweezers. Don’t judge.

I’m a word chef. I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid and Mom quizzed me with words from the National Spelling Bee. I enjoy writing about unique topics—little free libraries, tiny houses, micro-brewed chai—and am always on the alert for unique story ideas. It’s an honor for me to interview someone and distill their words into an inspiring and memorable article. I love living in the historically quaint town of Louisville and am so grateful for the extraordinary art, music and outdoor choices available.

The best part about writing is meeting and connecting with unique individuals. I left the Midwest in 2002 opting for sunny weather and mountains. When not writing or doing other marketing projects, I am often running--sometimes chasing my two young daughters, but mostly just for me. Truth be told, I run for beer and can often be found with my family on a patio at one of our abundant local breweries.

I love adventuring (yes, it's totally a verb), Corgis and a hot cup of tea. I moved to Colorado to continue my hunt for the ever-elusive Sasquatch and drink craft beer. In my spare time, I read, photograph my dogs and generally love life.

More than 20 years ago, I walked into a newspaper printery and was instantly hooked on the smell of paper and wet ink. I’ve been a print media junkie ever since. I write about architecture, design, mountain living and travel and appreciate the entire process, from thinking up ideas to interviewing captivating people to crafting the story and seeing a piece through production. As a native Bavarian, I feel at home in the mountains — Alps or Rockies — and love to ski and hike with my family and friends.

Allyson Reedy is first and foremost an eater. While her affinity for food was detrimental to her dreams of modeling swimwear, it helps her tremendously when writing about local restaurants. She's competed in eating contests around town, never met a Thai curry she didn't like and has been written love poems by waiters in awe of her impressive appetite. On the off chance she's not eating, you'll find Allyson wrangling her two toddlers and three dogs.

I love writing stories about this thriving Boulder community that I live in. Having only moved here a few short years ago, writing for Boulder Lifestyle has been a neat peek behind the scenes at who/ what make the town go round. There’s nothing more refreshing (and inspiring) than spending a gorgeous Saturday afternoon walking around Pearl Street, sipping a cappuccino, soaking in the mountains and watching the street performers with my husband and 5-year-old daughter.

Lisa has had a passion for photography since childhood and has always enjoyed capturing candid moments and natural scenes. Raised in Indiana, she fell in love with Colorado and relocated here in 1999. With an outgoing personality, her eye has been drawn toward this fun and exciting community. She enjoys working with local artists, business owners and event planners, as well as individuals. She has lived in the Boulder area for over 11 years and when not behind the lens, enjoys snowboarding, biking, hiking, camping, CrossFit, and spending time with her family and friends. BOULDER FARMERS MARKET REOPENS APRIL 4TH The Boulder County Farmers Markets is a Colorado nonprofit corporation established to provide an outlet for local agricultural producers to sell their products directly to the public. It will reopen on Saturday, April 4th. The Boulder Farmers Market began in 1987 and the Longmont Farmers Market in 1990, when both started as a small gathering of a few farmers and have grown over the years to become a well-or-

BOULDER ROUBAIX One of the largest professional and amateur races in the Rocky Mountain region is set to take place on April 11th. This is Colorado’s version of the famous Paris-Roubiax professional race featuring a 19-mile loop just north of Boulder. The course is 60 percent hard-pack, unpaved surface and 40 percent pavement over bucolic country roads. With extreme terrain features, it’s certainly not a race for everyone.

CU-BOULDER RANKS NO. 6 NATIONALLY FOR PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS The Peace Corps announced that the University of Colorado Boulder is ranked No. 6 in the nation for graduates serving as Peace Corps volunteers with 62 alumni currently serving around the world. In the annual Top Colleges list, CU-Boulder has held a position in the top eight nationally among large institutions for the past 13 years, ranking in the top three for nine of those years. CU-Boulder also has been the state leader among Colorado institutions of similar size each year since 2003. hen two colleagues passionate about art, creativity and jewelry each lost their mother within two years of the other, they decided to start French Bailey, a jewelry business, to honor the women and channel their creative energies. Co-Owners/Designers Patty Manwaring and Korri Roach work in the same department at BeadforLife, a Boulder-based non-profit geared to create sustainable business opportunities for poverty-stricken women in Uganda. The pair discovered they have a truly complementary set of skills to operate a business. They began selling their jewelry under the name French Bailey—the combination of their mothers’ maiden names—to pay tribute to the incredible inspiration and support the mothers each gave. French Bailey’s philosophy is to embrace the potential in all things and stay curious. They source naturally dyed leathers and metals like copper, nickel and brass from far-away places they want to visit. Next, they craft these rudimentary elements into stunning, one-of-a-kind necklaces and bracelets that can be worn by anyone. Manwaring was born in New York City but grew up in Vermont from age 11, moving to Boulder in 1998. She started out in early child32

hood education and moved to working with non-profit organizations as a way to engage both her head and heart through community impact and social change. With French Bailey, she views the pieces as a way to celebrate the beauty created by other cultures and to reinterpret it. “It’s been so wonderful to have the opportunity to focus my creative energy and bring my designs to life,” says Manwaring. Roach was raised in Utah where her mother made a living as an artist. She came to Boulder to pursue graduate studies in English at CU, and jewelry making had long been a passion. She says turning that into a business by designing, creating and putting a product out into the world was a bit nerve-wracking. “The positive reception our work has received is the most rewarding outcome of starting French Bailey,” says Roach. “It’s the best feeling when a customer connects with our work.” French Bailey designs are currently available at select local retail shops, such as Fiori Flowers in Boulder, via periodic trunk shows and in the new online store at FrenchBailey.com.

Paula DuPré Pesmen Is There With Care A

ARTICLE SANDRA HENDERSON ward-winning producer Paula DuPré Pesmen loves film. Even in her free time, her favorite thing to do for fun is to watch movies. The Boulderite, whose credits include three “Harry Potter” films, was afraid to leave her dream job of 16 years in feature film. However, it was not an option when she imagined herself not founding There With Care, her Boulder-based charity organization that provides assistance to families and children facing critical illness. “It’s scary to leave your comfort, especially if you are doing a job you enjoy. But if you have a desire to try something new, do it,” she encourages every woman who dreams of starting something on her own. “Ask yourself, ‘Can I say no to this?’ If the answer is no, then it’s probably the right thing to do.” In 2001, while Pesman was an associate producer on “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” her husband, Curt, was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer. “After dealing with Curt’s health, we returned to London. The first day back, I received a call from a wish organization that a child wanted to see the film before she passed away,” Pesman recalls. In the span of a couple of weeks, her crew put together a rough cut for the terminally ill girl. “When I received a picture of her at her screening, my eyes were opened to the many children around the world who had a wish to visit Potter.” Dozens of fulfilled “Potter” wishes later, the idea of There With Care was born. Pesman, who still produces documentaries, including “The Cove,” “Chasing Ice” and this year, “Keep on Keepin’ On,” sees many similarities between her work in film and her role of executive director at the nonprofit. “On a film, we have to often gain access to unique locations, props, set dressing and other components that can be challenging to figure out but are crucial to tell the story,” she says. “At There With Care, each family’s needs are unique and require a creative approach to supporting them through the challenges of dayto-day life, which become overwhelming when they’re missing work and caring for their ill child.” To Pesman, herself a mother of two school-aged sons, being a woman entrepreneur entails approaching her work at There With Care from the perspective of being a parent. Volunteer opportunities are set up during school hours so parents can make their time available to the organization while their own children are in school. “This allows so many professional people, many who are also mothers, to bring their work experience and skills to the non-profit,” she says. “Focusing on everyone’s families ensures we have care throughout the fabric of our organization.” Pesmen, who has called Boulder home since 1995, finds this community a wonderful place to live and be an entrepreneur. “People come together and help one another, and they truly care about others,” she says. “We see it every day through the businesses that provide food, car repairs, house cleaning and so much more.” With There With Care in Boulder and a second chapter in the Bay Area thriving, Pesman hopes to launch a third location in Los Angeles next year. Kelly Poirier, a recent addition to the Twisted Pine family, bolsters relationships with local non-profits. “We see that this type of relationship-building is really our niche,” Poirier says, “It’s a powerful way for us to fit in with the community.” Twisted Pine now holds monthly benefits for various organizations; a recent fundraiser for Joseph’s Journey, a non-profit that provides children with cancer the opportunity for an outdoor adventure, netted the organization $18,000. wisted Pine Brewery celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and inside the brewery’s inviting taproom and restaurant the mood couldn’t be better. Jody Valenta works hard to ensure the positive vibes are shared by customers and employees alike. In 2007 Valenta left a managerial position at Ben & Jerry’s to become general manager of Twisted Pine. She saw in the brewery similarities to her former employer—namely, a strong commitment to its employees and the community—and knew it would be a good fit. “It’s been so rewarding to continue developing that over the years,” she says. MANAGEMENT FALLS INTO PLACE

In October 2013 Jean Lund arrived as Twisted Pine’s CEO. Lund had just retired as CEO of Colorado-based CordenPharma but was coaxed into the job by Bob Baile, one of the brewery’s founders. Immediately she set about rebranding the product lineup and redefining the tap room restaurant business. And she knew one other area to add value to an organization already strong in so many ways: strengthening the bond between the brewery and the community. “What Twisted Pine really needed was to send a strong message that we love applying our craft beer creativity to drive positive impact in our community,” Lund says.

Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, an event designed to raise the profile of women in the brewing industry, took place last March. In anticipation of this important day, Twisted Pine linked up with the Pink Boots Society, a national organization that empowers women beer professionals through education and networking with other like-minded women. “Many women are in the beer industry but not as many are actually brewing,” Valenta points out. This fits well with Twisted Pine’s desire to empower women to do more in the industry. And the collaboration with Pink Boots is designed around the idea that women at other breweries have great ideas and that brewers can inspire each other. “Partnering with Pink Boots recognizes the role that women play at breweries and celebrates the idea that women can get out and brew,” Valenta says. A COMMON PASSION

What do Valenta and Lund look for in potential hires? “A multi-tasker,” Valenta says, “Someone who can make us better.” Some employees even arrive with a non-brewing background, but all bring qualities that add to the culture of the company. There may be no better example than Jean Lund herself. With a diverse range of interests such as beekeeping, travel and gardening, Lund is a bit of a Renaissance woman. She’s deeply inquisitive, and her desire to share what she has learned has led her to mentoring CU business school students and participating in a working group to study Boulder’s housing challenges. “My list of new learning opportunities is just getting longer,” Lund says. But what she and all the employees at Twisted Pine share is a passion for craft beer. So what’s in store for Twisted Pine over the next 20 years? Lara DeBroux Amy Ippoliti Co-Founder/CEO 90 Monkeys Amy Ippoliti has been leading yoga retreats, workshops and teacher trainings since 1999, and opened 90 Monkeys with her partner, Taro Smith, in 2011. The company offers online and in-person professional development for yoga instructors. Ippoliti says organizational pressures are more than offset by the success stories from yoga teacher alumni about their performance with students. “When our graduates are offered incredible opportunities in the yoga industry because of their increased confidence, that’s pretty exciting.” Ippoliti plans to add more courses and community events going forward. Environmental conservation is her second passion, a cause for which Ippoliti travels extensively, creating images of yoga and marine life. She has graced the covers of Yoga Journal and Fit Yoga magazine and has been featured in SELF and New York magazine among many others. 46

Owner Fiori Flowers A lifelong love of flowers, nature and all things beautiful set Lara DeBroux on the path to own and operate Fiori Flowers, a retail flower and high-end gift shop in Boulder. She purchased the shop in 2006 and credits her father for the degree she received in photography. She says it gave her the business education she needed, not to mention honing her skills in art, color and contrast. DeBroux grew up in Boulder, where her father was one of the original owners of Alfalfa’s, which afforded her the first opportunity to work in a flower department. She loves the challenge of keeping things fresh and questioning even the most successful aspects of the business. “I am so lucky to be surrounded by an amazing and inspiring family and community!” says DeBroux. “I cannot imagine doing anything else.”

Lindsey Cunningham Co-Owner Rollin’ Greens A food lover from a young age when play included setting up elaborate meals in her pretend home restaurant, Lindsey Cunningham started RollinGreens organic food truck and catering service with her husband Ryan in 2011. The pair revived a brand originally started in 1980 by Ryan’s parents and plan to launch a line of packaged foods this spring. Cunningham grew up in Boulder and studied journalism broadcast news in college, interning at “Access Hollywood” and “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.” Her first job after school was in the marketing department of Noodle & Company. She says the food truck business is challenging, because there are so many things to take care of before the hard work of food service even begins, but the rewards of setting her own schedule and being her own boss make it worthwhile. “Everything you do is for yourself,” she says. “It’s a ton of pressure, but when you get it right, the feeling is indescribable.”

Sheryl Hadley Owner Organization & Relocation, Inc. This year marks 10 years in business for Sheryl Hadley’s professional organization and moving service, Organization & Relocation, Inc. What began as a day helping a friend pack up his house has turned into a rewarding career in changing people’s lives. She loves to see the positive change in families, children and businesses after taking the leap to get organized. Everyone is happier and more efficient. Hadley’s previous career was selling high-end commercial furniture to architects and interior designers in Los Angeles, and she says the organization process is just as much—maybe more— about design and looking good as it is about function. “If it doesn’t look good, it won’t function,” says Hadley, a board member of the National Association of Professional Organizers since 2009 and past president of the Colorado chapter for two years.

Ph.D. CEO/Founder Prima-Temp  With beginnings as a dancer and then a neuroscientist doing research at Harvard Medical School, Lauren Costantini, Ph.D., eventually left academia for industry in order to translate her discoveries into products that improve patients’ lives. She joined Prima-Temp in 2014 as CEO to launch its inaugural product--a wireless, continuous temperature sensor aimed at giving women greater control over their fertility. The launch is scheduled for this summer. A competitive cyclist, Costantini always makes time for exercise and eating healthy. Even with the myriad demands of operating a startup that has gained incredible momentum over the last year, she says that her exercise is the key to balancing all the balls she has in the air at any given time. “Even if that means waking up at 4:30 a.m. to be on the bike by 5 a.m.,” she says.

Liz Finkelstein Owner/Stylist Mile High Style Since 2010, Liz Finkelstein has been helping people and businesses improve their style through Mile High Style, a boutique consulting business offering services for both fashion and interior decor and design. She knew her previous careers at CBS and in background investigations work for federal employees weren’t a fit when she was frequently reprimanded for not following the corporate dress code. “You have to know what makes you different,” says Finkelstein. “Know what makes you special, and know how to harness that professionally.” While Boulder is a casual place, there are so many rewards in the variety of clients she has, whether it is helping a woman regain confidence after having a child or setting up a serene bedroom retreat for a cancer patient about to start treatments. Trending recently is interior design clients seeking to spruce up a vacation rental property in order to command higher rates. Brenda Lyle Jennifer Pillari Owner OHCO/ Oriental Herb Company Jennifer Pillari is the owner of OHCO/ Oriental Herb Company, which creates and distributes herbal formulas designed to make life better by addressing immune support, digestion, pain and other ailments. A personal health experience turned Pillari on to Chinese medicine after college, so she decided to make a career of it and attended the master’s program at Southwest Acupuncture College in Boulder. After seven years in business development for the firm, Pillari has been at the helm since 2013 and hopes to continue the tradition of high-quality remedies and customer loyalty while managing steady, sustainable growth. She enjoys Crossfit and yoga and is married with two children, ages six and four. “It’s a lot to play all of the roles women play,” says Pillari. “Sometimes I have to remind myself to hand it off to the universe and go for a walk.” 48

Born in San Diego but raised in South Central Los Angeles, Lyle moved her young family to Boulder in 1977. She has since served on the City of Boulder’s Human Relationships Commission, founded Boulder’s Low Income Action Network and The Family Learning Center, among others. Her long list of awards and accomplishments include being named “Educator of the Year” by Boulder County, “Citizen of Accomplishment” by The League of Women Voters, and a “Local Hero” by the Denver Post. Elizabeth Stein Founder/CEO Purely Elizabeth While working in sales and marketing for a handbag company in New York City, Elizabeth Stein decided to do something more aligned with her passions and enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in NYC. She began consulting with individual clients to improve their health and launched Purely Elizabeth—an all natural and organic food company that creates products using innovative, nutrient-rich ingredients—in 2009 as a side project that quickly went full-time. Stein says she saw the need for healthier, gluten-free options and wanted to help people on a grander scale than one-on-one consulting. The company now has products available nationwide in retailers like Whole Foods Markets, Sprouts and Kroger stores and is a member of 1% for the Planet. Stein says seeing their ancient grain granolas, oatmeals and baking mixes on the shelf is pretty amazing. “I have been surrounded by a very supportive environment that allowed me to go after my dreams no matter how crazy they may have seemed,” she says.

Nicole Glaros Managing Partner Techstars An entrepreneur since 4th grade, Nicole Glaros has spent more than a decade mentoring and funding early-stage software companies. She is the managing director at Techstars, a mentorship-based seed stage investment company and has been with the accelerator since its early days in 2009. Glaros has been named one of the “Coolest People in New York Tech” by Business Insider and one of “The 7 Most Powerful Women to Watch” by Entrepreneur magazine. Personal involvement in the success or failure of the 10 startups she works with each year has been the only drawback for Glaros, who says she feels lucky every day to work with such smart, driven and generous people. Married with two kids under age 5, her stress relief comes from daily meditation and a very supportive husband who plays the role of “CHO, Chief Home Officer.” Her advice to those just starting their careers or to potential entrepreneurs is to seek relentlessly whatever it is you want, and don’t take no for an answer. “Steer your life,” says Glaros. “Don’t just let life happen to you.”

Heidi Ganahl Founder/CEO Camp BowWow Camp Bow Wow Founder and CEO Heidi Ganahl has faced extraordinary adversity in her life. Born from their love of dogs, the idea for the pet care business was developed years ago by Heidi and her first husband years ago, but he was killed in a tragic plane accident on his 25th birthday before they had begun operating. After grief, financial challenges and a couple of unsuccessful startups—and at the urging of her brother—Ganahl overcame her struggles and opened Camp Bow Wow in 2000, selling franchises starting in 2003. She recently sold the $80 million company to VCA but remains on as CEO. Ganahl is on the board of directors for the University of Colorado Foundation, leads Moms Fight Back, a nonprofit empowering moms to make social change by getting involved in Colorado politics, and is head of the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation (Camp Bow Wow’s charitable organization focused on lending a paw to animals in need). She is remarried to a competitive barbecue cook and has four children, including toddler twins. “In business, if you surround yourself with people you can trust and learn from, you can balance everything else,” says Ganahl.

oulder’s latest startup accelerator, MergeLane, aspires to propel the growth of women-led businesses with a 12week program designed to provide eight women-led startups with abundant resources. This entails advice from business mentors and executives, a program tailor made to early-stage business issues and topics explicitly affecting women leaders. It also offers connections to key individuals in the companies’ respective industries to allow for guidance and mentorship. As part of the program, which launched in February of this year, the participating eight companies will receive investments between $20,000 and $120,000. Each participating company has at least one female founder, market traction and a unique position in a significant sector. “It’s helping shift the way women run businesses,” says Program Director Hannah Davis. MergeLane companies were designated through an open application process that began back in October. The founders join MergeLane in Boulder for the first two weeks, one week midway through and the last week of the 12-week program, but do not need to be local residents to participate. Sue Helibronner and Elizabeth Kraus are the female founders behind MergeLane; they launched this program to bring more women to the male-dominated startup community. Both hold impressive credentials. Sue began her career as an attorney – last as a federal prosecutor

with the U.S. Department of Justice and then spent many years as a CEO and president leading and selling multiple startups. Elizabeth is an entrepreneur and seasoned angel investor as well as founder of the Impact Angel Group, a group of investors equally dedicated to making a difference and realizing a return. Local CEOs seeking advice can get feedback from other CEOs during MergeLane’s complimentary, public office hours. All sessions will take place in downtown Boulder. More adventurous spirits can go along on hikes for entrepreneurs and investors in the foothills. Kraus leads the 90-minute walks monthly. The theory behind MergeLane is to invest in women who will create high-performing gender-diverse companies; the notion is formed on data that Venture-backed women-led companies achieve 12 percent higher revenue and the returns are 34 percent higher. MergeLane is out to change the statistic that only 7 percent of venture-capital-backed startups are run by women. “We provide mentorship and help their companies to scale and grow…and grow,” adds Davis. Still in its infancy, MergeLane has made a tremendous splash. Its tagline is broadening the on-ramp for women-led companies. They are making a better way to open doors—or roads—and narrow the gap for the strong female entrepreneurs everywhere.

oldeReach is a dedicated community of women endlessly devoted to raising funds and awareness for organizations that aid and empower women and children in dire need. Every 18 months, this 501(c)(3) selects a front-range based or affiliated non-profit that is doing exceptional work internationally, improving the lives of females of all ages. Next, BoldeReach spends the whole year raising capital to support and further the charity’s efforts. During this time period, BoldeReach spreads awareness for the chosen organization by hosting community gatherings featuring prominent lecturers who are knowledgeable about the particular area of focus. A gala fundraising event culminates the season with more than 90 percent of all proceeds going directly to the chosen organization. (This year’s gala will be held at Lone Hawk Farm in September.) “We are all volu nteer s.

We have no office, no staff, no overhead,” says Carol Batrus, president of BoldeReach’s all-female board of directors. BoldeReach’s diverse community all reside in and around Boulder, and collectively have a wide range of backgrounds, interests and professional talents. Volunteers are connected through sharing the common concern for women and children everywhere. The opportune charity of 2015 is STOP India. STOP is a movement initiated by the non-profit RBC Trust that is dedicated to ending the oppression and trafficking of women and children through a multi-pronged approach. Based in India, STOP works to change systems that oppress and enslave children and women, and to enable survivors to use their lives and voices in a meaningful way. BoldeReach fundraises and educates the Boulder community; it tirelessly crusades to end these barbaric acts through legal movements and rescuing victims from various CONTINUED >

It also offers sundry opportunities for survivors to grasp their full potential. “We have come together to harness our collective strengths on their behalf, by creating awareness of their circumstances and raising funds to make a real difference in their lives, and by doing so, ours,” says Batrus. Boldly offering a hand up to women and children in need, BoldeReach supports outstanding charities to help positively impact the future of women across the globe. More than $800,000 has been raised for non-profits based in the Boulder alone. With an initiative to make a world where women are happier, stronger and more empowered, where families are better nourished, children stay in school, and parents can see a better future for their children, its work is sincerely noteworthy.

“Every site is different. Every client is different and every project is different,” says snyder. In the featured Norwood house, it was about creating a signature style and finding what the owners loved and then celebrating it. Since one of them had a vast gem collection, Snyder designed three niches in the public area to display them. Snyder also works to “choreograph their life” as she draws people to the front door of the home in a certain manner. She creatively plans the paving, lighting and planting of the front walkway.

“We design spaces that feel good,” says snyder.

Playing against smooth and rough, high and low, hard and soft, each room is well thought out to produce a different feel from the next, but all the while falling under the same cohesive umbrella of the house. Snyder integrates natural materials in a very contemporary way. The owners, who have been living in the space for a few months now, recently commented they are always discovering new elements of the house they hadn’t noticed before—sometimes it’s the texture of a wall or the way a room feels at a certain time of day. They say it’s like being on a vacation every day.

here may be no better city on earth to live in than Boulder, if you have food allergies or just try to follow a healthy diet. Gluten-free and farm-to-table aren’t merely fads here; we’ve been doing it since before it was cool. But there is one big problem with the restaurants that serve grain-free or dairy-free versions of popular menu items – they’re usually not that great tasting. Blooming Beets Kitchen changes that. Chef/Owner Iva Paleckova didn’t just set out to be Boulder’s only entirely grain-free, sugar-free and gluten-free restaurant (although she succeeded at that). She set out to make the food taste good so those with food sensitivities wouldn’t have to sacrifice taste for their health. Blooming Beets’ concept is all about the beauty of primal eating. It’s not so much about coming up with clever substitutes for gluten so much as highlighting all the fantastic, real-food options that exist. The nightly four-course tasting menu ($35 per person) showcases what the kitchen does best – simple plates with strong flavors. Salads are a high point, and the nutty, cashew-dressed powergreens with candied pecans is one of their best. Of the appetizers, we couldn’t get enough of the bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with cashew butter. Our server confessed that she eats a plate of them for dinner every time she works.

Entrees are fairly straight-forward: classic meat preparations, like pesto-topped chicken or the bunless burger, paired with generous servings of veggies. And just because the restaurant is sugar-free doesn’t mean that you don’t get something sweet for dessert - the dairy-free, very chocolaty brownie sundae made me a believer. The space is rustic and cheerful, filled with wooden paneling that Paleckova created herself when opening the restaurant last May. One of the other unique aspects of Blooming Beets is that all of the servers cook, so they know the menu inside and out. It makes for a more knowledgeable staff that takes pride in the food they serve. That pride translates into lots of return guests. “It’s strange to have people we don’t know in here,” Paleckova says. “It’s mostly repeat customers.” Paleckova herself is probably another reason so many people come back. Her passion for creating primal dishes made with the best quality local ingredients is palpable, as is her dedication to feeding her regulars, many of whom can’t eat at traditional restaurants. arah Welle and Dulcie Wilcox both have a passion for tasty food that’s cooked from scratch. Once they discovered their mutual interest, they launched their business, Colorado Crafted, which specializes in modern gift baskets with local gourmet foods, and started their popular blog Two-Tarts. Two-Tarts was created to share their photography and provide simple, yet delicious recipes using whole foods and seasonal ingredients. “We especially love things that look impressive but are actually quite simple to pull off,” says Welle. The two friends enjoy making homemade almond paste, ketchup, ricotta and butter. Their blog also features recipes that use fresh fruits and vegetables, seasonal cocktails, and of course desserts. “We aren’t ones to skip dessert,” says Wilcox. The girls share with us a few of their favorite recipes. Spring herb quinoa patties, a whole food meal or snack, which are crispy on the outside, and packed full of flavor. Also featured, a colorful Colorado cocktail to enjoy on a warm or chilly day.

SPRING HERB QUINOA PATTIES

DIRECTIONS:

Inspired by a recipe in Super Natural Every Day by Heidi Swanson

Combine everything but the quinoa in a large bowl and mix well. Fold in the cooked quinoa until it’s fully incorporated and the mixture is even. Heat a large frying pan, with a drizzle of oil to coat, to medium high. Using a spoon & your hands, form appox 2” patties with the quinoa mix and plop them into the hot frying pan. Cook each side for approx 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Don’t disturb them for the first minute or two to prevent them from falling apart. Flip, and cook the other side for an additional 3-ish minutes, or until both sides are golden brown. Serve with more freshly grated cheese on top.

Yield is 8-10 patties INGREDIENTS:

2 cups cooked quinoa (about 3/4 c. dry) 2 eggs 2 Tbsp. chopped green onion 2 Tbsp. chopped mint 2 Tbsp. chopped parsley 1/2 c. grated strong cheese – we used an aged sheep’s milk cheese 1/2 c. bread crumbs 1/4 tsp. salt

Turn the glass over onto plate and coat with sugar. Fill your glass with ice, and then add juices, triple sec, and vodka. Stir. Garnish with rosemary sprig. (Makes 1.)
