It is a complete celebration of women in business. A recent mixer at Shine brought the majority of these women into one room. I was utterly in awe of the talent, wisdom and energy each of these women shared with me. The room was abuzz with excitement as old friends and new gathered to swap stories, congratulate one another and to celebrate their livelihood.

Around Town CRAFT BREWERY HEATS IT UP Consider an enjoyable evening pairing award-winning craft beer with delicious, beautifully presented and memorable food. Join Lafayette’s Front Range Brewing Company as owners Will Boggs and Chris Dutton combine their love of unique and tasty beer with the talents of Chef Connie Ruel to host outstanding brewmasters’ dinners. A recent five-course meal paired Front Range’s Munichus bALTicus Porter with ancho duck confit, roasted garlic potatoes and a chickpea waffle drizzled with a molasses/porter reduction. Also on tap was Rumrunner Coffee Quad with an Espresso Rum Jelly Dessert. Each dinner pairs a chef-inspired appetizer, soup or salad, an entrée, side and dessert with a complementary beer. Front Range ages their brews in barrels which previously housed rum, brandy, Makers Mark or other distilled spirits, imparting an added layer of complexity to the beverage. The spicy, heady aromas of these craft beers tantalize every sense before the first sip. Front Range’s beer styles comprise a variety of ales, blondes, IPA’s, a German-style Kolsch, red ale, their infamous coffee quad and a variety of seasonal beers, including Ichabod’s Revenge Punkin Ale. Mark your calendars on May 10 and August 18 for upcoming brewmasters’ dinners. Check the online calendar for a plethora of food and music events, including upcoming cheese and beer pairings this year at FrontRangeBrewingCompany.com.
NEW MEDICAL AESTHETICS PRACTICE FEATURES LOCAL ARTISTS A new medical aesthetics practice has opened in Boulder’s Steelyards district at 2600 30th Street: Rinnova. The new practice specializes in non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures including body contouring, skin tone evening, skin rejuvenation and aesthetic services. Originally opened in July 2014, Rinnova moved in February to their permanent location at 2600 30th Street, the space formerly occupied by Boulder Lights. Todd C. Becker, M.D., PhD., explains the philosophy behind the new space’s design. “We wanted a space that offered patients privacy and convenience,” he says. “And, aesthetically, we wanted a space that would reflect that

sense of harmony that our patients are seeking with procedures. So, we reached out to local artists to help create a space that reflected that idea.” Rinnova is working with local artist Will Day to create a modern inspirational collection of art to compliment the space. Day is an energetic painter who uses colors and compositions to inspire the soul and enliven the spirit and mood. He explains about the collaboration that he is thrilled to have art at Rinnova because of the incredible, serene environment that Rinnova is creating. “I think that vision goes very nicely with my art and my vision as an artist to really tap into emotions,” Day says. In addition to paintings by Will Day, the practice also features sculptures by Sherry Tipton. Pieces are available for purchase and the public is invited to stop by any time during business hours to view the collection. WillDayArt.com and SherryTiptonSculpture.com
LOCAL NONPROFIT HOSTS SUMMIT ON FOOD INSECURITY AND FOOD JUSTICE ACTIVISM Boulder Food Rescue, a local nonprofit that redistributes food from businesses to communities in need via bike transit, will host a conference titled the Forward Food Summit at the Impact HUB on April 5th and 6th. The conference is open to the general public and tickets cost $15. The mission of the conference is to provide information and tools to empower individuals to resist the injustices of America’s current food system and collaborate for change. Executive Director of Boulder Food Rescue Hana Dansky, says, “In order to truly change the food system, we need to start looking at the injustices from all angles. We hope to not only praise the work of many community members who have been addressing these issues, but look at gaps and holes in our work as well. We need to start having real conversations about systemic oppression and this summit will open up space to organize with each other around these issues so we can begin to obtain a real collective impact.” The two-day conference will commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 5th and end at 5 p.m. The second day will begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. The Forward Food Summit will feature presentations from at least a dozen local food security and justice organizations in the form of lectures, workshops and field trips. Furthermore, the keynote speaker on Saturday evening is Majora Carter, who has extensive experience consulting on urban agriculture systems, employee engagement consulting for Whole Foods and accessible job creation and outreach for EBT pilot programs as well as extensive urban revitalization project and strategy work. NONPROFIT CULTIVATION CENTER SET TO HOST FOURTH ANNUAL NONPROFIT TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT Nonprofit Cultivation Center is seeking proposals for the fourth annual Nonprofit Technology Summit. The Tech Summit is the only full-day event in Colorado connecting nonprofits to trainings that help advance knowledge and skill level with technology used in everyday work. This all day event, at the Boulder Marriott, is filled with multiple training tracks for the beginner to advanced practitioner. Knowledgeable and experienced individuals, consultants, organizations and tech-related businesses that are passionate about working with nonprofits are encouraged to submit a brief proposal. “Nonprofit Cultivation Center is excited to see what creative content the trainers will come up with this year. Due to the ever-changing nature of technology it is often hard for any business to keep up, let alone nonprofits who face tough challenges with limited means,” says Kristin Imo, Program Manager. In exchange for donating their time, trainers will gain access to significant promotional opportunity within the Colorado nonprofit sector. The Tech Summit will also offer attendees access to one-on-one meetings with technology experts in order to problem solve individual organizational challenges on the spot. For more information, visit NonprofitCultivation.org/professional-development/technology-summit.

Rocky Mountain National Park celebrates its centennial in 2015, and there’s no better birthday present for all of Rocky’s friends than Rocky Mountain National Park: The First 100 Years ($39.95, Farcountry Press, 2014) by award-winning Colorado author Mary Taylor Young. “Rocky was established as a national park in 1915,” notes Young. “But the story of any park with ‘Rocky Mountain’ in its name begins not just 100 years but a billion years ago.” Young’s lively prose carries the reader back in time to formation of the very rocks we see today. If geologic time could be speeded up, she writes, the forming of the landscape of Rocky Mountain National Park would play out in a grand spectacle of crashing tectonic plates, spouting volcanoes, gouging glaciers and mountains thrust skyward. Young understands the park’s allure. “I’ve been coming to Rocky since I was a little girl,” she says. “I credit childhood summers at my family’s cabin on Deer Mountain with setting the course of my life as a nature writer and zoologist.” The Rocky centennial book is Young’s fifteenth book focusing on the wildlife, landscape and heritage of Colorado and the West. She has taught seminars for the Rocky Mountain Nature Association every summer since 1988. Young’s enthusiasm for her subject shines throughout Rocky Mountain National Park: The First 100 Years, reflected in her meticulous research and engaging storytelling. She adroitly braids the lives of intrepid rangers, CCC workers, artful road engineers, dedicated scientists and droves of tourists into a grand tale, exquisitely illustrated with more than 250 historical and landscape photographs. As America lights the candles for Rocky’s 100th birthday, discover why there is so much to celebrate—a billion years’ worth! Rocky Mountain National Park: The First 100 Years is available at local bookstores and gift shops, through online retailers, or from Farcountry Press at 800.821.3874, FarCountryPress.com.
MOMENTOUS GIFT OF HOLOCAUST ARCHIVE TO CU-BOULDER WILL DRAW SCHOLARS FROM AROUND WORLD The Mazal Holocaust Collection, considered the world’s largest privately owned Holocaust archive and the most significant U.S. collection outside of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., has been donated to the University of Colorado Boulder. The highly regarded collection comprises more than 20,000 books and 500,000 documents, pamphlets, photographs and other materials, including original transcripts of the Nuremburg trials. Five thousand of the volumes are limited editions and rare books. “This acquisition will transform CU-Boulder into a global center of scholarship on the 20th century Jewish experience,” says Professor David Shneer, the Louis P. Singer Chair in Jewish History and director of the Program in Jewish Studies. “By anchoring the university’s Archive of Post-Holocaust American Judaism with the story of the Holocaust itself and the destruction of much of European Jewish religious and cultural life, CU is now one of the only places in the world to be able to demonstrate how global Jewish life continued and flourished in the United States after World War II.”

OUR NEXT SESSION BEGINS April 5TH!
The archive is the life work of Harry W. Mazal, a retired businessman from Mexico City who made San Antonio, Texas, his home and became an internationally recognized Holocaust collector and researcher. Working with numerous volunteers, Mazal dedicated his life to creating a vast repository committed to defending the voices and memories of the victims of the Holocaust around the world by promoting scholarly research related to Holocaust studies, Holocaust denial, anti-Semitism and bigotry. “The Mazal Holocaust Collection is a unique collection of materials about the Holocaust,” Lipstadt says. “It will help make the University of Colorado Boulder one of the premier places for research on a myriad of aspects of the Holocaust. It is an amazing collection of documents which will be an asset to students at the university and researchers throughout the world.” After Mazal’s death in 2011, his family wanted to ensure that his life’s work and legacy would continue to be available to scholars, researchers and educators around the world. A portion of the books from the Mazal Library has been donated to the new Texas A&M University–San Antonio. The rest of the library, including the highly valued archive and limited edition books, has been donated to CU-Boulder. “The Mazal Holocaust Library was everything to Harry,” says daughter Aimee Mazal Skillin of Lone Tree, Colo. “It was his heart and soul and he made it his mission to debunk Holocaust deniers. His archive material was vast and CU has the capability to maintain, restore and share these valuable resources with the world.” For more information on CU-Boulder’s Program in Jewish Studies and the Archive of Post-Holocaust American Judaism visit JewishStudies. T
ucked in an early 1900s Victorian-style home in downtown Boulder resides the brains behind the beauty of Alchemy Mineral Blends. Just over seven years ago, Breanna Ortola and Sally Walker came together as co-workers in the beauty industry and together developed a mutual appreciation for the art of makeup. Breanna and Sally also shared a compassion for helping women feel better about themselves through appearance and self esteem. With a business idea in mind, they traveled to Hollywood to attend the Cinema Makeup School to further develop their artistry skills. Upon returning to Boulder, the two young entrepreneurs were focused and ready to create an all-natural, 100 percent pure mineral makeup line. Knowing the harsh effects the Colorado sun can have on the face, they made it a point to have all their foundations rated as SPF-26. In the infant stages of the endeavor, Ortola and Walker would do makeup consultations at clients’ homes and then expanded to having spas and salons carry Alchemy products. Demand grew quickly in Boulder while Alchemy was occupying a small setup inside The Side Door Salon. With both women also being estheticians, they reached a stage where they knew Alchemy needed to be in a dedicated space so they could offer a variety of services including makeup applications for all occasions, head shots, weddings, lessons, eyelash extensions, microdermabrasion, peels and facial waxing.
24 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2014
“We would do it for free if we could” is a common statement at the Alchemy room. From the moment I walked in, it was very clear that both women have a strong passion for what they do—making women feel confident and refreshed. The beautiful space also was a welcome change from the sometimes intimidating, cold, environment of a beauty salon. “Alchemy is a place to receive beauty therapy from the inside out,” Ortola says. With new digs in a charming downtown setting, and big momentum (winning “Best Of” THE KNOT in 2014) the pair are excited about having a warm, comforting home for their clients to come in and feel welcome and relaxed. Book club parties, girls’ night out and education classes are all starting to become a part of the daily scene at Alchemy Mineral Blends. Not only did I leave with a refreshed glow, but also with two new friends I feel I’ve known for years. For more information, please visit AlchemyMineralBlends.com.

arianne “Gussie” Walter started drinking wine at a young age and has loved it ever since. She began making her own wine at home. She worked as a geologist for the USGS, and she and her late husband, Jeff, would take her wine on weekend camping trips. She says it holds up great in a Nalgene bottle and tastes great after a long day of hiking. When her husband passed away in 1995, she quit her job as a geologist and took up wine making as her career. She worked at a winery in New Mexico where she helped them set up their chemistry lab. Back in Colorado she worked at Trail Ridge Winery while getting her own—Augustina’s Winery—off the ground. “I was sometimes working up to three jobs while I was trying to get my own winery started,” Walter says. The work was painstaking, but she was determined to make it a success. She takes a slightly different approach to winemaking. “I make wines for sipping by the campfire or for relaxing on the back porch,” she says. She’s less concerned with following the “rules” of winemaking and more concerned with making something she thinks tastes good and that people will enjoy. Her dedication to Colorado and Colorado grape growers is unyielding. She has developed relationships with growers on the 26 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2014
Western Slope on which she counts for her annual production. “Getting the grapes can be tough,” she says. “The number of wineries has outgrown the number of growers.” She is careful to get her orders in early to ensure delivery. However, it’s still not a guarantee. Bad harvests have affected her orders from 2010–2012, and 2013 was not a great year either. She hopes for great weather conditions for 2014. Walter makes about 11 wines per year—nine of which are standards on her wine menu. Local favorites include WineChick Red, Boulder Backpacking Wine, Bottoms Up White and her limited edition WineChick Cherry. You can sample the wines at her small tasting room at the winery in North Boulder. Bottles can be purchaseds at local retailers and farmers’ markets including Boulder and Louisville. You’ll also find Walter 4715 North Broadway B-3 peddling her wares at wine Boulder festivals along the Front 303.520.4871 Range and the large ColoraWineChick.biz do Mountain Winefest.

B
oulder Lifestyle recently held a mixer at Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place for some top Boulder female entrepreneurs. The energy and creativity in the room was palpable. Each of these women shared their stories of inspiration and success, and each is to be marveled for managing the workload and stress, work-life balance and individual success with grace. Here are their stories.
kim coupounas GoLite
Kim Coupounas and her husband Demetri are avid outdoor enthusiasts. Through years of backpacking and mountaineering, the couple found the lighter they packed, the more they connected with nature on their journeys. However, to have all of the gear they thought they needed, they were often weighed down. After years of trying to trim weight from their packs, they realized it was the core items—their packs, sleeping bags, tents and clothing—that were the culprits. 28 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2014

“I love that my work at both B Lab and GoLite is focused on using business as a force for good in the world.” —Kim Coupounas
It was in that realization that GoLite was born. The couple set forth to develop a line of gear that would be lighter and more sustainable than other products on the market. In recent years, they also cut the middleman out of their business model and brought their premium products direct to consumers through wholly-owned GoLite stores and e-com site to enable their products— and therefore the outdoors—to be more accessible and affordable for consumers. “We want to help people lighten up to enjoy the outdoors more. And by making outdoor gear more approachable for everyday people, we hope more people will spend time in nature and become stewards of our beautiful planet,” Coupounas says. Her dedication to stewardship goes beyond GoLite. Coupounas is now the Colorado director of B Lab, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves a global movement of entrepreneurs using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. In her new role, she is leading a collaborative effort to make the state of Colorado the leader in modeling a better way to do business. B Lab is the standards organization behind the over 900 Certified B Corporations around the world, all of whom meet the most rigorous global standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. GoLite has been a Certified B Corporation since 2008. While Coupounas is still a founder and co-owner of GoLite, she is no longer involved in the day-to-day activities of the business but rather focuses with her husband on the company’s “big picture” and long term strategy, including their continued retail store expansion globally. “I love that my work at both B Lab and GoLite is focused on using business as a force for good in the world,” Coupounas says. jennifer egbert Remax Alliance Real Estate Agent
Jennifer Egbert studied fine art and worked in high-end retail sales before she found her calling in real estate. She had a friend who was an agent and very encouraging of her career change. “This career has given me more than what I was looking for,” she says. “It taught me human nomenclature and how to be a good listener.” She says being a real estate agent is a creative outlet for her. “We real estate agents deal with the highest levels of emotion, and we handle them with grace,” Egbert says. While she acknowledges not every transaction is amazing, she knows it’s not about her experience—it’s all about the client. “It’s about the other person being taken care of,” she says. While she’s busy taking care of her clients, she is sure to strike a balance between her career and family life. Her partner is busy with graduate school and she has a 3-1/2 year old son. She says her biggest challenge is not suffering from working-mom guilt, although like in her work, she handles it with grace.

leah colby La Dolce Events
Long-time Boulder resident Leah Colby worked in event planning for a non-profit for seven years before making the leap to start her own business—La Dolce Events—three years ago. “I had family and friends asking me to help them plan their weddings,” she says. She did this work on the side until finally, knowing Boulder was a great market for her own event planning business, she took the leap. “You have to take the risk and learn in the process,” she says. She loves the creative aspect of her career, and is pleased she was able to give up splitting her time between two jobs and focus on her own business. Today, 90 percent of Colby’s business is word-of-mouth referrals. She enjoys working with her clients, but says it was a struggle to leave the structure and security of working for someone else. She employs several part-time workers, and is looking forward to bringing on full-time staff to specialize in the different areas of her business. effective and successful. I have more energy for work and life.” To share this success with others, Pierrat founded Emerging Woman, a platform to promote feminine leadership and entrepreneurship. Last year her first event was held in Boulder. She had no idea how many women would attend, and more than 350 showed up. “It was amazing. There were women entrepreneurs, engineers, writers…almost every sector was represented,” she says. “All of these women wanted to have the same conversation.” The event featured guest speakers such as Elizabeth Gilbert, Alanis Morissette, Eve Ensler and more. All giving their personal take on creating a compassionate community and creating a new way of working—the feminine way. This year’s event will be held October 9–12th in New York City. Featured speakers include Arianna Huffington, Tara Sophia Mohr, Gabrielle Bernstein and more. For more information or to register for this year’s event, please visit EmergingWomen.com
Barbara Wilson
chantal pierrat Emerging Women
Chantal Pierrat’s work in the corporate world was characterized by competition and aggression. She worked hard in ways that were outside of her character to get ahead in her career. She knew this work ethic was not sustainable—she wasn’t being true to her personal character. She was faced with exhaustion and needed to find a way to work that would leave her feeling energized instead. As Pierrat found herself in an emerging leadership role, the idea came that she needed to be able to shed her “masculine” style and lead with her feminine side in a caring, nurturing way—a way that was true to her nature and would be sustainable. It was then she discovered other women needed guidance in this arena to be able to lead in business in a truly feminine way. “I wanted to lead a movement for creating a conscious way of leading,” she says. “When I am leading with my heart, I am more

“I have the opportunity to create my dream job every day.” —Sarah Schupp
Sarah Schupp
sarah schupp UniversityParent
UniversityParent came to fruition when Sarah Schupp was a senior at CU Boulder, thanks to her parents. “My parents kept asking me all of these questions like where they should stay when they came to visit,” she says. “They were looking for a different side of the community than I knew.” Schupp approached the school with the idea of developing a guide to the school and community designed to help parents. CU agreed to partner with her and the first printed guide was underway. Schupp approached local business to advertise in the guide, and after graduation she took on the project as a fulltime career. The next school she approached was CSU, then she took the guide to her hometown of Dallas. Today UniversityParent prints guides for more than 200 schools nationwide, but the larger accomplishment is that 3000 colleges are represented on the company’s website. Parents can access hotels, restaurants and more when planning college visits. In addition to planning visits, parent can use the site to get admissions information, pay tuition online and get Lori Kemmet the sports schedule, as well as read a multitude of articles about how to help your child adjust to college life. Schupp has been named one of INC. magazine’s Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30, Businessweek’s Top 25 Entrepreneurs under 25 and one of the Denver Business Journal’s Top Women Under 40. She’s been named a “Player to Watch” by the Gates Foundation and was recognized by the White House & the United Nations as one of the country’s top young entrepreneurs.
With this success, Schupp enjoys learning and growing every day and working with her great team. She credits her husband with making it easy to manage her career with her family life. She has created for herself a position that allows her flexibility with her time to be with her daughter and soon her second daughter due this month. “I have the opportunity to create my dream job every day,” she says. “Women in the U.S. are so fortunate in business—there’s no difference whether you’re male or female.” Schupp’s great grandmother could be the inspiration for her entrepreneurial spirit. “She started a hospital in the 1940s,” Schupp says. “When I start to think my job is hard, I think of her and the adversity she must have faced.” For more information, please visit UniversityParent.com

Lori Kemmet is busy. She’s a dentist with her own practice. She’s a co-owner of South Boulder’s Yoga loft. And she is a direct sales distributor for Pangea Organics. Whew! Kemmet was a dentist in the Air Force before moving to Boulder and starting her practice, Incredible Smiles, in 1989. She says her staff there is amazing and like family. “I look forward to Monday morning— honest,” she says. “I look to find people who have the same work ethic and values that I received from growing up in the Midwest. I found them! You can experience it at Incredible Smiles!” Despite her love for her dental practice, Kemmet says her Pangea Organics business is the most fun she’s had in a long time. “The direct sales model is something I always avoided—but not any longer. It takes a great —Lori Kemmet DDS product and a company with great vision for me to align,” she says. “Since Pangea is no longer sold in retail stores people are looking for it—especially in Boulder. I love helping people with their skin problems and we all have them. I promote toxic-free living. It’s about the entire body and entire earth for me. My health and yours means a healthier mind and planet!”

As if all this isn’t enough, Kemmet has big plans for the future. Not to open another business, though. She says Yoga Loft will add a second studio next door to its current location. “I want more hot yoga—but we will be keeping it authentic at the same time,” she says. She supports her husband Jeff Bailey (also an owner in Yoga Loft) with his yoga teacher trainings and his newly released book The Yoga Mind. She currently has 450 beauty ecologists on her Pangea Organics team. She plans to double that by the end of summer, and she and her husband are working together on a book for people with home-based businesses. Lori Kemmet is a woman who takes action. She put out feelers for about two years before she found the right place: Boulder. “I wanted a small town environment,” Hampson says. But she didn’t want to sacrifice fine dining, great shopping and quality of life. Naturally Boulder is a great fit. The timing was right for children—a first grader and a two-and-a-half year old. “My kids get the luxury of being with their dad,” she says. “Which allows me to focus on my career without feeling guilty.” Hampson is grateful that she gets to have the best of both worlds. “Making this shift was a career goal,” she says. “So it’s exciting.” Two weeks after taking over the dealership, the floods hit. jody nagel Boulder Granola
“Unleash your inner hippie,” says Jody Nagel, owner of Boulder Granola. “Question things.” The Boulder lifestyle is what inspired Nagel to start her business. She moved to Boulder 24 years ago from the East Coast, where she felt like a stranger in her own world. She knew when she landed here, it was the place for her and her family. “You could get an organic apple here 24 years ago,” she says. “This is what I like about Boulder. We question everything: religion, lifestyle, western medicine, education and, of course, food.” Three years ago when Nagel found herself about to be an empty-
nester, she needed a passion and quickly found her calling. She decided it was time to put her love of Boulder into a tangible item that would reflect her love for the city and what Boulder is all about. “Granola. It’s an avenue for a greater message,” Nagel says. “It’s the perfect archetype.” So she set forth to take her mom’s 45-yearold recipe for granola and rethink it in Boulder terms. She uses certified gluten-free oats and her granola has the lowest sugar content of any of the granolas on the supermarket shelf, she says. It’s 100 percent organic. “I think a Boulder brand has to be organic,” she says. “It’s important for us.” Today, Nagel has two full-time and six part-time employees. She is attending Natural Products Expo West, a huge natural products show founded by New Hope Natural Media, where the Boulder natural products industry is well-represented. The show itself is representative of Nagel’s biggest challenge. “The food business is difficult,” she says. “It’s a crowded category. But I’m competitive. It’s the excitement and my strong belief of the magic we have here in Boulder that carries me.” Nagel is looking forward to a packaging refresh and increased distribution this year. Boulder Granola is available at Whole Foods throughout the Rocky Mountain region, Vitamin Cottage, King Soopers, Alfalfa’s and Lucky’s Market. You can also find it in many restaurants and retail stores. For more information, please visit BoulderGranola.com

After owning her own business and working in the corporate field, Sutton Fell found herself looking for some job flexibility when she was pregnant with her first child. She was dissatisfied having to sort through all the scams and ads to find the jobs she knew were out there. Out of her frustration came the idea for Flexjobs. “Essentially, when the idea for FlexJobs came up, I was not looking to start another company,” Sutton Fell says. “But I felt so passionately about the idea to make it easier to find these ‘needle in the haystack’ type jobs, I decided to go for it.” One challenge she faced was having the revenue model work the way she wanted it to. lready in its third year, Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place’s creators are hardly new to entrepreneurialism. You may have dined at their first restaurant and Boulder icon, Trilogy—launched when the owners were merely 24-years old. After a nine-year success, the triplet sisters sold the family business and operated a catering company. The trio of Executive Chef Jessica Emich, Bar Manager and Director of Events Jill Emich and Frontof-House Manager Jennifer Emich then launched Shine, which they collectively own and operate. “We’ve been negotiating since the womb, which is why we work so well together,” states Jill. Jessica pipes in, “We dream and scheme together.” Female entrepreneurialism runs in the family. Both their mother and grandmother were self-employed. “That gave us the will and the strength and courage to move through,” says Jessica. Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place’s mission is to create a place for everyone to nourish themselves through food, community, dance, education and celebration. A large part of this goal is achieved through offering local, organic, holistic, nutritionally inspired comfort food. Boasting about their 100 percent non-GMO and 100 percent gluten-free kitchen, Shine delivers the full package. All of its beers are brewed onsite; it even crafts its own “intention-based potions” made with an enticing blend of herbs, gem and flower essences with a clandestine concoction of mystic, magic and playful elements added. When asked about the challenges of being entrepreneurs, all seem to take the risk in stride.
“The risk is in the unknown,” Jessica says. “You have to have the courage to fall flat on your face and at other times you’ll excel better than you’d ever imagined.” CONCEPT
Restaurant and community gathering place, Shine hosts events daily varying from business lunches, networking workshops, rehearsal dinners, receptions, movement classes, live music—you name it. Throughout the day or night, the space transforms into a venue to congregate, celebrate and transform as a community. “It’s about people sharing their gifts. People come to open their hearts and offer their offerings and to receive as well,” says Jill. “Nourish people from the inside out and leave people shiny—happy.” continued >

Using a seasonal menu with all meats sourced locally (and most produce as well), they are fond of going direct to farmers to keep prices affordable and within reach. From lunch offering a variety of sandwiches and salads including the Beets and Blue Salad ($11) and 100 percent Grass Fed Burger ($11.75) to dinner offering items like Cappellos Grain Free Ravioli ($17) and Local Crispy Confit ($18.50), everyone is sure to find something that suits their palate. The gluten-free options are extensive including the children’s menu and weekend brunches, which serve gluten-free pancakes, benedicts, donuts and biscuits all—made in-house. DRINKS
Anywhere from five to eight handcrafted beers are on tap including its best seller Trilogy IPA ($5.50) and gluten-free star Liberation ($6.50). Shine potions are available in non-alcoholic “magically enchanted” blends ($6.75) or offered as a base for a conscious mixer. Owl Eyes is a beloved favorite. EVOLVING
It’s a synergistic family—both literally and figuratively. The trio is growing the business and selling their business lines through places like Mile High Organics where clients can have select goodies delivered straight to their door. They are also selling (now bottled) potions in other Boulder-based establishments. Beer growlers and bottled potions are also available to go from the restaurant itself. “We’re excited to spread the love,” states Jessica. The happiness behind family and health and nurturing one another inside the community is almost palpable. Program participant Jerrica Allen was thrilled. “I had hope for the first time in a long time,” says Allen. “When Tim, the “Ready to Work” case manager, let me know that I had been accepted, I was ecstatic. Here was my chance to change my life.” The idea is that by allowing people to create a solid track record, employers will be more willing to hire candidates. And it’s working. Eighty percent of trainees who enter the program obtain full-time conventional employment after completion. When women reach the end of the program, they are rewarded with clothing to help them put their best foot forward. Boulder-based, high-end apparel company, Willow, recently donated a generous amount of apparel, and Crocs donated shoes. It is through contributions like these that women gain the tools they need to move forward. By building a bridge of opportunity, “Ready to Work” empowers women and helps them step out of homelessness. Challenges accompanying people caught in the cycle of poverty disrupt our entire community, and we can do more to help.
HOW YOU CAN HELP If you see the “Ready to Work” crew out in City parks and business districts, thank them for their hard work and courage to turn their situation around. Inform your friends, family and colleagues about ‘Ready to Work.’ If someone on the street panhandles and says they don’t have a job, refer them to “Ready to Work.” Consider contracting the crew for your company’s needs or hire a graduate to join your team as a full-time employee.

ome renovations, large or small, tend to be stressful undertakings. This is no surprise; the house is an intensely personal object, a reflection of taste and personality. Add to that the fact that renovations likely last for years and the stakes are high for getting it right the first time. When Dawn and Doug Brandt bought their Boulder home in 2000, life was in full swing. Busy with jobs and kids, they knew their new home—a 2,700 square foot, two-story in the Rock Creek neighborhood—desperately needed a makeover. But back then it simply wasn’t a possibility, so they made do with the cramped kitchen, baby blue carpeting and warren of light-deprived rooms that comprised the main level. Flash forward to September 2011, when the kids were grown and gone and Dawn was ready to tackle a project. “We didn’t want to move since the neighborhood is fantastic,” she says. “We love our neighbors and really take care of each other.” Something had to give.
The Right Fit
Dawn began interviewing architects. But they were pushing large-scale renovations and although she couldn’t put her finger on it she knew it wasn’t quite right. “The irony is that I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew what I didn’t want,” Dawn recalls. Boulder Architect Cheri Belz took a look at the space and inspiration struck. Belz, a self-described modern, organic architect, has long incorporated natural elements such as stone and wood in her work. She approaches projects with a minimalist eye, striving for open space and simplicity. Belz realized that what was being proposed was more than might be necessary; she believed she could deliver what the Brandts wanted within a modest budget. Wanted: The Perfect Kitchen
Belz, like many architects, has both a strong attention to detail and a grasp of the larger picture. Her client, who loves to cook,

spent a great deal of time in the kitchen, then a tiny room separated from the living room by a load-bearing wall. Belz says Dawn was cut off from the rest of the home when she was in the kitchen. Starting from the kitchen, Belz envisioned an open space that favored clean lines and understated elegance. The centerpiece, an oversized island with playful curved lines, would be the focal point. For many people
it’s simply not enough to gaze at a blueprint to get an idea of the finished product. Belz assists her clients by creating large templates and placing them in the space. “These were cardboard templates Cheri created and cut to scale,” Dawn says. “Doing this gave me the opportunity to see and play with shapes until I knew we had it right.” continued >

A First Impression
The front entryway remained an issue. “It was so small,” Dawn recalls. “You’d open the door and just about run into the stairs leading up.” Belz proposed pushing out the front and raising the ceiling, creating an airy entryway flooded with natural light. Dawn began researching oversized wooden doors that would catch the eye. In all, it seemed a graceful solution to provide a welcoming entry point for visitors.

Life During Renovation
The Brandts lived upstairs while the work proceeded, the upper guest bedroom doubling as a type of kitchen. “Of course I had this vision of going to our mountain cabin for a few months and coming back to a finished house,” Dawn says with a laugh. “But that’s not how it works.” During that time Dawn remained deeply involved in the finer details of the process, choosing finishes and hardware. Belz welcomed the collaboration, as receiving client input is crucial to her overall process. Kitchen Tours
In the end, Belz balanced economy, sustainability and aesthetic sensibility in the renovation for the Brandts. The work has paid off—recently the Brandt’s home was selected as a destination for 44 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2014

A Modern Day Mercantile Curated, Quality Gifts and Apparel Article Emily O’Brien | Photography Provided
E
stablished in October 2013, Cedar & Hyde is a modern day mercantile highlighting curated goods in its Boulder brick and mortar shop just off of Pearl. Owned and operated by two sisters, Christie and Poss Lambert, Cedar & Hyde sells goods created by craftspeople across the U.S. and socially sound global artisans. Having grown up in a large family whose parents ran a business that appeared to diminish as community support shifted toward bigger box stores, its demise left a mark on the sisters. In massive retail chains, they found the quality and stories behind the pieces were nearly nonexistent. Using that experience as a springboard for inspiration, the Lambert sisters decided to create a store representing brands made by individuals they can believe in. “We’ve decided to focus on quality made goods crafted by artisans domestically and globally,” Christie says. “The product we select is sourced from people whom we feel are meeting the demand of modern society, holding onto old morals.” Walk inside and you’ll find a handpicked treasure trove of highend apparel for men, women and children, home goods and market items alongside select items produced by Boulder artisans. Rugs to hats to salted licorice, one could spend a couple hours just thumbing through the selection of goods. With its warm and rustic décor, this is anything but a big-box, cookie-cutter, mass-appeal store. Every item gives off a handtouched sense; it’s a boutique that welcomes lingering. From men’s pocket squares to deliciously scented candles to delicately crafted women’s earrings, Cedar & Hyde’s eclectic mix of diverse inventory is sure to satisfy every need. “We wanted people to be able to walk into a space that energetically felt different. The work behind every item holds a story, and it’s that story that creates a unique feel you get to take home with you,” adds Christie. Being located in the prime shopping hotspot near the Pearl Street Mall, they have clients that drop in weekly to nab anything from pickles to new hair clips for their daughter or a gift on their
46 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2014
way to a party. Christie feels that is one of the best parts about being situated in Boulder. “We get to welcome folks into the shop to find the perfect pair of jeans, and then see them out to dinner later that night wearing them. It’s so fun to get to see the way people incorporate the pieces they purchase from us into their lifestyle, you don’t get that in a large city,” says Christie. A close connection with the community is near and dear to the heart of both owners. Offering quality and sustainably made goods with a touch of polished sophistication is paramount. The mix is a combination of alluring home goods, creative gift options and well-made accessories. If you’re looking for a distinctive gift for someone special or simply want to indulge yourself or linger in curiosities for awhile, Cedar & Hyde is a sure bet.

Parting Thoughts
Mothers of Invention Words by Ellen Nordberg
W
hat are some of your favorite products and services? Do you ever stop to think about whether they’re local or come from women-owned businesses? My favorite Boulder mom morning looks like this: throw on my favorite Skirt Sports skort, hit Body Dynamics studio to workout, stop by a coffee shop for Outrageous Baking pumpkin bread and recover with a massage or acupuncture at the Dova Center. Each of these businesses was founded by a local female entrepreneur. Women-owned businesses are booming in Boulder, as in many cities across the U.S. According to a study by American Express OPEN, the number of businesses owned by women nationwide has increased 59 percent since 1997. “I do see this national trend mirrored here,” says Myka McLaughlin, founder of WINC (WomenInCommunity.com), a business training program for women in Boulder. “And my experience as a female entrepreneur here has been nothing short of great. There’s a vibrant community with innovative people who genuinely support each other.” Wendy McClure, co-founder of Body Dynamics Studio in Boulder, and mom of two grown kids, agrees that we live in a welcoming area for innovation, especially if those ideas are health and fitness based. “Boulder is a place that invites new ideas,” she says. “Our business model was novel at the time (1999) for the fitness and health industry—a more intimate alternative to the health club setting—but we know how Boulder loves its fitness opportunities!” In response to her daughter’s allergies and eczema as a baby, Pamela Fletcher also came up with a health conscious solution—the tasty gluten free treats of Outrageous Baking. Now her breads and cakes can be found 58 Boulder Lifestyle | April 2014
in coffee shops all throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. A professional triathlete, Nicole DeBoom of Skirts Sports designed a running skirt because she wanted to feel more feminine while training and racing. DeBoom took seminars at the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, won the 2004 Ironman Wisconsin in a hand-sewn prototype and started up a business that has grown to encompass more than 50 styles of workout clothes for athletes including runners, cyclists and triathletes. “Skirts Sports’ mission is to help women pursue happiness through the transformative power of fitness,” says DeBoom, who became a mom at 40. “We make athletic clothing that fits real women’s bodies and helps them navigate their busy lives.” Gigi Terinoni who opened the Dova Center in May of 2013 (despite having a six month old baby,) agrees much of the secret to the growing trend of women entrepreneurs in Boulder lies in the health and fitness culture here, but also in the way women network and help each other. “The Boulder area tops the charts on best places to live,” she says. “Strong, driven, entrepreneurial women are motivated to provide the best possible lifestyle for their families, and women thrive on supporting one another as well as being creative together.” So many of my favorite products and businesses are locally based, and it makes me realize: Moms in Boulder County make it happen—dreaming up creative solutions for themselves, their friends and their families.
