I don’t know about you, but this time of year I always find myself teetering between resisting the commercialization of a ‘greeting card holiday’ and indulging in the sweet moments it brings.
To plan a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or share my feelings face to face? I usually land somewhere in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we all share is the opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. However you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we highlight some of the things to love in Blue Springs.
Speaking of love, I’d like to take a moment to brag about my Valentine and the woman who makes the words you’re reading on these pages possible. This will be the third Valentine’s Day I’ve shared with her since we got married, and each year is better than the last. She has a heart of gold, loves our community, and jumps at every opportunity to help someone in need. She truly is the greatest gift God has ever given me.
As we navigate this season, balancing the chill of winter with the excitement of spring ahead, we hope you’ll be inspired to come together with the people in your life and give thanks for those closest to you—the ones in your home, on your street, and throughout your community.
“Love local” means supporting your local businesses and neighbors, and it also means appreciating what’s near and dear. So grab a hot cup of coffee at Scout Coffee and head home for a game night around the fire with your family, or snag a decadent dessert from Essential Eats Grazing and indulge in a movie night.
We’ve always believed that what we can do together is far greater than what we can accomplish apart. Month after month, the stories shared on these pages demonstrate the same in our communities..
Thanks for letting us be part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like.

INSPIRING CHANGE THROUGH DEDICATION AND LOCAL LOVE

When you talk to Christy Yager about Blue Springs and Grain Valley, it becomes clear her heart is deeply rooted in these communities. Christy, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, embodies the essence of “local love” through her leadership and her family’s unwavering dedication. Whether it’s through volunteering, coaching, or supporting local organizations, she is driven by a deep desire to uplift those around her and inspire others to do the same.
For Christy, the Blue Springs and Grain Valley areas are more than just places to live—they are vibrant communities with a unique small-town feel and an incredible sense of togetherness. “What makes these communities special is how people step up to help others in need,” Christy shared. From parks and trails to thriving small businesses, Christy values the resources and connections that make these towns feel like home.
Christy’s involvement in the community spans a wide range of roles and organizations. As the school board president at Timothy Lutheran School, she works alongside a talented and diverse group of board members who share a passion for supporting students, teachers, and the school’s mission. “It’s been so rewarding to see the positive changes we’ve implemented and the moves we’re making today for future successes,” Christy shared. “Though I’ll admit, one of my favorite moments might be embarrassing my kids at school events when I get hold of the microphone.”
Her role as a middle school basketball coach at Timothy Lutheran School combines her love for the game with her commitment to mentoring young people. “Coaching is about more than just basketball,” Christy explains. “It’s about teaching life skills, building confidence, and being supportive during a pivotal time in their lives. As a coach, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the girls grow, not just in their skills, but in their confidence and character. Middle school can be challenging, but being there to support and encourage them makes a lasting impact.”
“Knowing our efforts bring hope and relief to someone else’s life is what motivates us.”
Beyond her work with Timothy Lutheran School, Christy is involved in numerous organizations, including Blue Springs Rotary, ReHope, Resource Health, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, and Answering the Call—a nonprofit supporting first responders in need. Each organization reflects her belief in helping others and creating a better community.

Her involvement with Rotary has been particularly meaningful, blending her commitment to the community with family participation. “I got involved with Rotary early on because it’s filled with individuals who care about leaving the community better than they found it,” Christy explained. Over time, this dedication naturally extended to her family. For the past five years, her children have helped set up for Rotary’s annual fundraiser. “I want my kids to understand the value of giving back and the impact their efforts can have,” Christy says. “I hope others will feel inspired to find an organization that aligns with their passions and get involved.”
The Yager family’s community involvement goes beyond formal organizations. They believe in the power of small, everyday acts of kindness. “It’s not always about hours of volunteering,” Christy says. “Sometimes, it’s as simple as a smile, holding the door for someone, or lending a helping hand to a neighbor.”
During the holidays, Christy and her daughter supported a family through Resource Health. They selected and wrapped gifts together, reflecting on the joy their efforts would bring. Her husband, passionate about assisting widows, recently helped a local woman with home repairs. “These moments teach our children that small gestures can have a big impact,” Christy explains.
For Christy and her family, “local love” means investing time, talents, and treasures into the community. “We’re proud to support local businesses and nonprofits because we can see the impact of our efforts firsthand,” she says. “It’s about being proud of where we live and doing what we can to make it better.”
Her advice for families looking to get involved? Start small and find something you are passionate about. “Make it fun,” Christy shared. “Let each child pick a cause to support, and celebrate your efforts together.”
Christy’s vision for the future is simple but powerful: to continue inspiring others to serve and to foster a stronger, more connected community. Through her leadership, generosity, and heart for service, she exemplifies what it means to love where you live. Her story reminds us all that creating meaningful change starts with a willingness to act and a commitment to care for one another.
Kayla Bass combines passion, creativity, and craftsmanship in every custom cake and treat
When Kayla Bass discovered her passion for baking as a stay-at-home mom, she had no idea it would grow into the beloved local business, Baking with a Bass. Starting in 2019, Kayla transformed her hobby of making cakes for family and friends into a thriving enterprise, offering custom treats that bring joy to the community.
The name ‘Baking with a Bass’ came about during a lighthearted car ride with her husband. “We tossed around a few names, but when I said it out loud, we both laughed, and I knew that was the one,” she recalls with a smile.
Kayla’s creations are as diverse as they are delightful, ranging from cakes, cupcakes, and brownies to macarons and pastries. A standout favorite is her signature vanilla berry cake—bold vanilla layers filled with a triple-berry compote and topped with smooth vanilla buttercream. Beyond desserts, Kayla offers decorating classes and catering services, combining her love for teaching with her passion for baking.
What makes Baking with a Bass stand out? “Every cake that leaves my door is made with passion,” says Kayla. She takes pride in connecting with her customers, celebrating their milestones, and making their day with her creations.
Kayla also shows her love for the community in countless ways. From supporting the Grain Valley Eagles marching band and donating to local fire and police departments to contributing to nonprofits like I Support the Girls, her generosity extends far beyond her kitchen. Even when she’s fully booked, she refers customers to other local bakeries, believing in the power of mutual support.
With her warm personality, passion for her craft, and commitment to her community, Kayla Bass is baking up more than just sweets—she’s baking love into every bite.

In real estate, success is often measured in numbers—homes sold, transactions completed, and deals closed. However, for Amy Arndorfer and her team at Premium Realty Group, success is measured in something far greater. “The true reward comes from building relationships, giving back to the community, and making a lasting impact on the lives of others,” Amy shared. This heartfelt philosophy is the driving force behind Amy’s thriving real estate career, a journey that began with a leap of faith.
Back in 2000, Amy found herself at a crossroads. Dissatisfied with her two full-time jobs, she boldly decided to quit. With the support of her fiancé and now husband, Nick Arndorfer, a residential framer, Amy enrolled in real estate school. From her first listing to opening Premium Realty Group in 2013, Amy has poured her heart into her work, fueled by an unshakable commitment where her and her team serve their clients with integrity, compassion, and excellence.
At Premium Realty Group, Amy has built more than just a business—she’s created a family. Her team is a cohesive group united by shared values of honesty, care, and respect for clients. This love for their clients shines through in everything they do, from personalized guidance to fostering trust and confidence. “Education is key,” Amy explains. “Not every home is built alike, and we make it our mission to guide clients through every step of the process.” It’s this heartfelt dedication to transparency and education that sets Amy and her team apart, ensuring their clients feel informed, empowered, and genuinely cared for every step of the way.
But Amy’s impact doesn’t stop at real estate. She and her team are passionate
about giving back to the communities they call home. From supporting local charities like Harvesters and the Deron Cherry Foundation to brightening children’s holidays with the Santa Bus in Grain Valley, their acts of kindness ripple far and wide.
One of their most touching initiatives was providing Christmas gifts for several special-needs families. “The look on their faces when the gifts were delivered was heartwarming,” Amy recalls. “It wasn’t just the joy of receiving the gifts—it was the sense of hope and love that we were able to bring into their homes. For those families, it meant so much more than presents—it was a reminder that they’re not alone and that there are people who care deeply about them.” While she prefers to remain anonymous in these
efforts, her heartfelt dedication to helping others shines brightly.
Amy’s connection to the Blue Springs and Grain Valley communities is deeply personal. Having grown up in Grain Valley and raising her family there, she’s experienced firsthand the strength and unity of these neighborhoods. “The people and the

togetherness are what makes these communities special,” she says. “When there’s a need, everyone pitches in.”
Looking ahead, Amy and her team are eager to deepen their community involvement, with plans to support homeless initiatives and programs for children in need, such as backpack meal drives.
“If you’ve been considering giving back or getting involved, don’t wait—it’s never too late to start making a difference,” Amy encourages. “Giving looks different for everyone, whether it’s through time, donations, or other efforts, but every contribution matters.”
Amy’s team is a shining example of how business and community can go hand in hand, with a deep commitment to serving others both professionally and personally. For them, it’s about building a lasting legacy of love, support, and kindness. With every family they help, every charity they support, and every heart they touch, Amy and her team remind us all of the power of giving back. Real estate, for them, isn’t just about homes—it’s about building stronger, more connected communities.

AN EAGLE SCOUT CREATES A DROP BOX TO RETIRE FLAGS WITH DIGNITY
In a world where acts of service and patriotism can inspire us all, Aiden Volk, a sophomore at Blue Springs High School, has gone above and beyond to make a meaningful impact in his community. Through his Eagle Scout project, Aiden created a lasting tribute to honor veterans and provide a proper way to retire United States flags.
Inspired by his experiences raising the flag at Brittany Hill Middle School and stories of his grandfather’s service in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, Aiden envisioned a way to give back to both his community and his country. With support from Troop 1138 and the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department, Aiden brought his vision to life by constructing a US Flag Retirement Drop Box, now proudly installed at Pink Hill Park’s Veterans Way Memorial.
What began as a wooden structure became a handcrafted aluminum box wrapped in a striking design from Royal Signs and Graphics. Aiden’s dedication to detail, countless hours of labor alongside his father, and leadership of his troop during the project’s construction reflect his commitment to honoring the men and women who serve or have served, as well as the flag itself.
Aiden’s box serves a practical and symbolic purpose. It provides the community with a respectful way to retire worn or tattered flags, and then Aiden and his troop ceremonially retire them at campouts. This heartfelt project, dedicated to his late grandfather, embodies the values of respect, service, and patriotism.
Through his efforts, Aiden has not only achieved a significant milestone in his Scouting journey, but he has also added to a legacy of respect and service that will inspire others for years to come.
The community is encouraged to use the drop box at Pink Hill Park at Veterans Way Memorial to retire their flags with honor. This supports Aiden’s and the Boy Scouts’ efforts to ensure these symbols of our freedom are treated with the dignity they deserve.

Simple Projects to Celebrate at Home
The first Valentines were handmade in the 18th century, long before printing presses and mass-produced options. Today, handmade signifies the ultimate in personal mots d’amour. Enjoy these sweet projects as a couple, a family, or with friends.
Create heart ornaments to hang on a Valentine’s Day tree. The ornaments can be used as clue cards for a Valentine's Day scavenger hunt. Participants find their picture on the tree and hunt for a hidden treasure.
A home-based holiday is made complete with a dessert table. Whether made from scratch or store bought, a collection of decorated confections is as beautiful as the treats are delectable to eat.
Poetry is a most personal way to express your heart. No need to be intimidated by haiku, a short form of Japanese poetry. While there are several variations of the form, a traditional place to begin is with a seasonal word that divides 17 syllables into three lines of five/ seven/five. Simple and sweet.

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.
Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.
Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture.
To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail
Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.
Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.
FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL
Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.
For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a pool a perfect choice. Many local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.
Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak in North Scottsdale is a popular mountain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt is a park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love McCormickStillman Railroad Park , which boasts a small-scale train that circles the park and plenty of play areas.
A destination filled with numerous attractions is A rizona Boardwalk , a center that includes Butterfly Wonderland , OdySea Aquarium , Ripley’s Believe It or Not! , Museum of Illusions , and more.
The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build Taliesin West , his winter home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.
However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!
There are also museums such as Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West , a Smithsonian Affiliate, which showcases items from the Greater Western region, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art , affectionately known as SMoCA.
On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public ArtWalk in the Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.
While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum (affectionately known as the MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Desert Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Phoenix Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
