Dividends of Life and Love
When you hear the word “investment,” what comes to mind? Money seems to be a standard image. Maybe for you, it’s things like stocks and bonds or perhaps more tangible assets like real estate or gold. All of those things make a lot of sense. For me, though, my thoughts on investing move quickly to thoughts of my daughter. Obviously, I hope to provide her with a financially stable and materially secure home. But when it comes to the life I hope to give her, it feels increasingly important to “invest” in other things, too—things like health, family, community, and adventure—for me, my wife, Grace, and all of us together.
We tried to keep those ideas in mind as we put together this year’s “Investment” issue. Sure, we turned to experts for sound investing and financial advice, but we also explored some less expected ways we invest in our lives and the world around us.
Private aircraft ownership is still a status symbol, but it’s becoming more and more about offering scheduling control and flexibility for the businesses and families that enjoy it (“Flying the Private Skies,” p. 42). Meanwhile, one of the most important ways to grow your company may be one of the most overlooked: reinvestment. We hear from a pair of proven and respected business leaders on the importance of building your organization from the inside out (“Empower, Elevate, & Expand,” p. 56).
Out in the Hill Country, a nonprofit invests in people through the perhaps unlikely but no-less-powerful bond between a horse and its rider (“Healing Through Horsepower,” p. 62). Our photographer Sarah invites us on a holy journey along one of the world’s most sacred pilgrimage paths (“The Walk. The Way.,” p. 76). All that, plus making your own cheese (“Homemade Cheese Magic,” p. 38)!
However you invest your resources, time, and self these days, we hope your returns are positive and that they pay dividends of more life and love for you, your family, your community, and the world!

DOING STORAGE RIGHT
ARTICLE BY AUBREY MATSON
WHEN YOU WANT TO USE YOUR STORAGE SPACE WELL, THE PROS AT SHELFGENIE CAN HELP IMPROVE YOUR HOME AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
Do you have trouble reaching items in the back of your cabinets? How much time do you waste digging through clutter in your kitchen? If you face struggles like these, you’re not alone. Many people suffer from the frustration of trying to make sense of either cramped or seemingly vast storage areas in their homes. From kitchens to bathrooms, it's common to feel like there’s simply insufficient space.
But what if the space you need is actually hiding in plain sight? Enter the experts at ShelfGenie. They’ll offer creative, custom-tailored pull-out shelving solutions to enhance storage and make life more convenient.
MAXIMIZING YOUR SPACE
“Our pull-out shelves are a premium home upgrade. They make your life more enjoyable,” says Allison Sedlak, owner of ShelfGenie San Antonio. She and her team are dedicated to turning frustrating, inefficient spaces into functional areas that work for you. Whether it's a cramped kitchen cabinet, a disorganized pantry, or a small laundry room, ShelfGenie evaluates existing storage and finds creative ways to optimize it. As Sedlak puts it, her team helps customers “take frustrating spaces and turn them into functional spaces.”
Many homes feature cabinets that have awkward layouts. “Builders will put in cabinets that lack shelves,” Sedlak explains. “It’s really hard for people to store items, much less get to them.” Her design team works with homeowners to create one-of-a-kind pull-out shelving solutions that optimize every inch of space. Unlike a typical renovation—which may involve tearing down walls or replacing cabinets entirely—ShelfGenie focuses on the inside of your existing cabinets or other storage spaces like pantries, saving time, money, and frustration. By putting pull-out shelving inside existing cabinets, all items are brought out into the light and become equally accessible without frustration.
Sedlak says, “When a homeowner has frustrations with clutter or hard-to-reach areas, we design tailored solutions that are custom fit to their items and their unique space.”
For example, ShelfGenie often addresses the dreaded mess of a cluttered spice cabinet. Because homeowners can’t see what’s in the back of their pantries, “they keep buying the same spices,” Sedlak notes. ShelfGenie offers multiple spice solutions to organize the cabinets or drawers so customers can easily see what they have and avoid buying duplicates. Not only does ShelfGenie make your home more organized, but it also enhances your quality of life. Sedlak says, “You’re investing in making your home more functional.”
CONVENIENCE AND ACCESSIBILITY
Especially for people with mobility challenges, ShelfGenie can make areas of the home usable. People with disabilities or older adults may struggle to reach high shelves or deep cabinets, so ShelfGenie’s solutions can be life-changing. “For some people, accessibility is a problem,” Sedlak says. “It's a really big game changer for those customers because they can enjoy their home again.”
ShelfGenie's products solve common storage frustrations, whether it’s a custom tray divider for cookie sheets and cutting boards or an innovative under-the-sink addition for storing dish soap and trash bags. “My favorite product goes under the sink and attaches to the side wall.  It’s great because it adds an extra row of storage shelves to the sink area that was formerly just wasted space.”
TAILORED TO FIT
Complete customization begins with a free design consultation, during which one of the ShelfGenie design experts assesses the space, the items stored, and the problems a homeowner faces. Working together, they devise a plan to ensure the space is fully utilized, prioritizing the things that have always felt just out of reach, whether in the back of a kitchen cabinet or under the bathroom sink.
Each project is also customized to meet both specific needs and resources. “We have different options to meet different budgets,” Sedlak says. This means ShelfGenie offers everything from premium hardwood finishes to cost-conscious lines that ensure the same lasting quality.
A LASTING INVESTMENT
When considering whether to invest in a home improvement solution, Sedlak says long-term value is essential. ShelfGenie’s solutions come with a lifetime warranty, adding confidence that the investment will last. “It’s a lifetime investment,” she says. “It’s an investment in you and your home, and it adds value to your home.” Sedlak points out that if you sell your home, the ShelfGenie installations add value because buyers will recognize the upgrade as a lasting investment.
Whether you're dealing with a cramped kitchen or a difficult-to-use bathroom cabinet, ShelfGenie’s custom shelving solutions are designed to make life easier. By maximizing your storage space, organizing your items, and making things more accessible, ShelfGenie will deliver more than just a way to find items more quickly. It’s a premium home upgrade that makes life more enjoyable.

FLYING THE Private Skies
FOR SOME BUSINESSES AND FAMILIES, THE FINANCIAL, STRATEGIC, AND LIFESTYLE BENEFITS OF PRIVATE AIRCRAFT OWNERSHIP JUST MAKE SENSE.
ARTICLE BY REY LOPEZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BROOK LYONS & JESSI EDISON
Air travel is the fastest way from point A to point B. For business travelers especially, no other mode of transportation is quicker at getting you where you need to be. But with security checks, long lines, delays, and crowded planes, air travel can be a frustrating experience for even the most seasoned wayfarer. For those who spend their lives moving at the speed of business, time is not just money—it's everything. And while first-class cabins and VIP lounges have their appeal, they don't compare to the efficiency, time savings, flexibility, and prestige of owning a private aircraft.
This space is where the MCS Companies step in. The Boerne-based business group includes MCS Sky, a private aircraft management service; MeritAir, an executive skyport; and the forthcoming PointFlight Charters. All are dedicated to meeting clients’ travel needs in service and style.
Investing in a personal aircraft is an idea that is gaining traction, especially in the post-pandemic world where the demand for private travel has surged. Lisa Damuth Snow, a long-time PR and marketing executive and current vice president of MCS Companies, has seen firsthand the shift in mindset. "With private aviation, you're on your schedule, not someone else's," she says. "You can leave when you want, avoid layovers, and arrive directly at smaller private and public airports that commercial airlines don't serve."
But is private aircraft ownership just an extravagant luxury, or could it be a strategic investment? Are people choosing private ownership? If so, why? Scott Snow, 24-year Navy veteran fighter pilot and the founder and president of MCS Companies, frames the decision: "Do you want to send your executives out for five days to accomplish one deal, or out for one day to accomplish five?"
Time is a driving force for many buyers, but there's more to it than shaving a few hours of travel time. Private aircraft ownership also offers efficiency, privacy, and an opportunity to individually tailor your travel experience. Private aviation means no TSA lines, no wasted hours in terminals, and access to smaller airports closer to final destinations.
CEOs and high-profile individuals can customize everything from in-flight meals to cabin layouts, creating an environment focused on work or relaxation. Lisa recalls an incident illustrating how valuable these considerations can be. "We had a well-known entertainment client call us at 11 a.m., needing to be in Nashville in four hours. We made it happen. That level of flexibility is impossible with commercial travel."
The financial aspect of private aviation is one of the most significant considerations for those looking to leap into aircraft ownership. Steve Mack, the chairman and CEO of Texas Heritage Bank, which specializes in aircraft financing, offers insight into the numbers. "We typically require 20-30% cash down on aircraft purchases, with financing terms of up to 20 years for jets," he explains. "Interest rates vary but are usually adjustable every 3-5 years."
For business owners, tax benefits can also be a significant factor. Scott points out, "A lot of people will buy an aircraft at the end of the year to take advantage of tax deductions rather than handing money to the government." But the reality of ownership goes beyond just the purchase price. "Buyers must be fully aware of the maintenance and carrying costs of aircraft ownership,” Mack says. Storage costs, insurance premiums, and regular maintenance expenses must be considered in view of the buyer's cash flow and financial capacity." Lisa echoes this sentiment. "Many people focus on getting a great deal on the aircraft itself, but they forget about maintenance, insurance, and operating costs. Just because you got a bargain upfront doesn't mean you're saving money in the long run."
Anyone interested in private aircraft ownership should approach their decision with the same level of due diligence as any significant business investment. Financing options, depreciation, and operating costs over time are all important considerations. Those with the means to consider an investment, like purchasing an aircraft, should consult with a financial advisor and aviation experts like the Snows to ensure the purchase lines up with an overall investment strategy.
There are multiple ownership models to consider when trying to offset costs. Full ownership offers total control with complete responsibility, while fractional ownership shares costs but requires careful coordination between owners. "If two owners aren't on the same page about scheduling and maintenance, it can be a nightmare," Lisa warns. Fractional ownership requires an explicit, legally binding agreement between owners to avoid conflicts over things like usage and costs. Working with an experienced aviation management company can help streamline these processes and avoid other pitfalls.
Chartering is another popular ownership model. In this scenario, the aircraft is placed into a Part 135 charter program, allowing it to earn revenue when the owner is not using it. While this can be lucrative, it's not without risk. Lisa shares a cautionary tale: "We had a client making $50,000 a month in charter revenue, but within a year, he faced a $170,000 engine overhaul. The revenue was great, but you have to plan for maintenance costs."
Other revenue-generating opportunities exist beyond chartering, too. Some owners lease their aircraft to corporations or aviation firms. Others create exclusive membership programs where clients pay for access to private flights.
Another growing trend is the expansion of semi-private aviation models through companies like JSX. These programs allow travelers to experience the perks of private aviation at a fraction of the cost while providing aircraft owners with a steady revenue stream. "Companies are looking into offering turboprop routes within Texas, similar to how Southwest Airlines started,” Scott adds. “This opens up new opportunities for those who own aircraft in the regional market."
Technological advancements, increased demand, and changing economic factors are just a few elements to consider when purchasing an aircraft. The industry is increasingly investing in alternative fuels and electric aircraft, making ownership more environmentally friendly, while enhanced avionics and AI-driven maintenance tools reduce downtime and improve efficiency. More companies are focusing on expanding routes between smaller cities, making private aviation more accessible. Lisa explains, "We're seeing more first-time buyers enter the market, especially those looking for cost-effective ways to integrate private aviation into their business strategy."
Frequent travelers value their time and want all the flexibility they can muster. For these individuals, owning a private aircraft is more than a luxury. It is also a strategic asset that pays dividends in efficiency, opportunity, and quality of life. But the question isn't whether private aviation is appealing—it's whether it makes sense for your lifestyle and business. As Scott advises, "If you're not flying at least 125 hours per year, you should strongly consider chartering instead."
“With private aviation, you’re on your schedule, not someone else’s. You can leave when you want, avoid layovers, and arrive directly at smaller private and public airports that commercial airlines don’t serve.” —Lisa Damuth Snow
When considering private aircraft ownership, the best approach is to clearly understand your travel needs, budget, and financial goals. Lisa and Scott are experienced private aviation professionals with a proven track record and a wealth of experience. That expertise, along with a solid financial institution, can ensure your aviation investment enhances your lifestyle and provides tangible business benefits.
More than ever, the success of a business relies on the ability to make the best use of time. Having the ability to take off at a moment's notice often isn't just a great investment, it's a game-changer.
As a veteran-owned Boerne business, MCS Companies wants to be your best choice when considering private aircraft ownership. Based at the MeritAir Executive Skyport at Boerne Stage Airfield, you're guaranteed elevated aircraft management while enjoying access to the highest level of round-the-clock support that fits your schedule, travel needs, and lifestyle.

IT FEELS LIKE THERE ARE LOTS OF APPROACHES TO INVESTING OUT THERE. WHAT STRATEGIES ARE MOST PROMINENT, AND HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
There are many approaches to investing in this day in age. There’s momentum investing, dollar-cost averaging, and many others, but the two most prominent strategies would be passive investing and active investing approaches. The difference is in the way they are managed. Active investing employs a “buy-and-hold” strategy with very little
ARTICLE BY DANIEL GERTSON
outside interference within the portfolio. On the other end, active investing results in a lot more frequent buying and selling within a portfolio based on market trends.
WHAT
ARE THE IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN TRYING TO GROW WEALTH?
There are many factors that contribute to the accumulation of wealth, but some of the most important are contributions, time horizon, and asset location. Contributions define how often and how much you’re adding to your accounts and saving toward your goals. Time horizon refers to how long you have to save and grow your assets. Finally, asset location considers the many different types of investment vehicles and each asset class's historical and projected growth.
WHEN IT COMES TO INVESTING, PEOPLE OFTEN FOCUS ON THE IMMEDIATE SHORT TERM (I.E., RETAIL INVESTING, CRYPTO, MEME ASSETS, ETC.) OR THE DISTANT LONG TERM (RETIREMENT). WHAT KIND OF STRATEGIES ARE HELPFUL FOR BUILDING WEALTH IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS OR SO?
When it comes to building wealth in terms of a 10-year horizon, it is really going to come down to appropriate asset location and realistic goals, as well as each investor’s tolerance for or adversity to risk. For someone who is risk-tolerant, the best growth potential in 10 years will come from the stock and equity market. For the more risk-adverse investor, a mixture of stock and equity positions with a portion in the fixed income/guaranteed return area of the market may be a more favorable approach.
GIVE US YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR GROWING WEALTH AND DOING IT WISELY.
Look at the historical performances of the different areas of the market. That gives a good benchmark of average performance depending on investment style.
Also, it’s important to know what you are paying for in terms of your investments, whether you have mutual funds, exchangetraded funds, or use an investment advisor. All of these things come with expense ratios and fees, so it only benefits investors to know what they cost. Always remember the other important areas of your life that tie both directly and indirectly into investments, specifically from an estate planning and tax perspective.
Remember, it is never too late or too early to start investing. Whether you have retirement in mind or any other financial goal, time in the market is your ally.

ARTICLE BY DANIEL GERTSON
For business owners, reinvesting in employees and the organization itself is one of the smartest moves for longterm growth. This can look like a lot of things, depending on the industry, but the best leaders recognize that a business is only as strong as the people behind it and the culture they create.
We reached out to two experienced and respected leaders in our business community: Melissa Martindale, the CEO of Promotion Physical Therapy, and Kevin Welborn, the Managing Director at Joshua Creek Ranch (JCR). Join in our conversation as we explore why strategic reinvestment is the key to lasting success.
(Responses edited for length and clarity.)
LET’S START WITH THE BASICS. HOW DO YOU DEFINE “REINVESTMENT,” AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Martindale: Reinvesting in our business means prioritizing continuous growth and improvement by investing in our team members and resources. This includes providing opportunities for continuing education, staff development, and access to cutting-edge physical therapy techniques and state-of-the-art equipment. As a business serving the community for nearly 20 years, reinvestment is vital for staying sharp, innovative, and trustworthy.
Welborn: Quite simply, it means you care! I spent 22 years in the corporate world before joining JCR, and it seemed like I worked for companies who were always “running lean” or with clients who cut expenses for the “wrong reasons.”
It’s so nice to work for Joe and Ann Kercheville, who truly understand the importance of reinvesting heavily in our business and how there is a direct correlation to becoming the best in the world at what we do over the last 35 years!
WHAT HAS REINVESTING LOOKED LIKE FOR YOU AND YOUR ORGANIZATION?
W: I hear all the time from JCR clients how amazing our staff is and how we continue to raise the bar. Whether it’s small improvements to our dining services, building new resort amenities, or adding sporting activities, we invest so much in trying to enhance our guests’ experiences. That, combined with our best effort to retain top talent in every department by offering competitive pay, good benefits, and a meaningful work environment, results in a recipe for success over the long term.
M: We dedicate significant time and resources to mentoring and developing our team members. This includes oneon-one training, continuing education opportunities, and staff development days. Beyond professional growth, we also focus on building authentic relationships with our team members and patients. By walking alongside them and understanding their needs, we create an environment that supports, nurtures, and serves everyone with excellence.
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN YOUR BUSINESS GROW AND CHANGE BECAUSE OF REINVESTMENT?
M: We have cultivated a thriving workplace culture where many of our team members have been with us for 5, 10, 15, and even 18 years. This longevity creates a familial atmosphere that is felt by our patients, leading to trust and loyalty. As a result, our patients confidently refer their family and friends to us when they need our services which allows us to build relationships for life and foster a community that values and supports what we do.
W: In the last 10 years, we have increased sales by over 200% and net profit by over 2,500%. We have become one of the most-visited hunting and sporting lodges in the world, with endorsements and accolades from Orvis, Beretta, Federal Premium Ammunition, and Shooting Sportsman Magazine. Most importantly, we have maintained an extremely high retention rate of our core staff, accumulated more than 5,000 five-star customer reviews across multiple online platforms, and grown our business every year since 1990.
“Your business will never reach its full potential without reinvesting in your staff, assets, and operations for the benefit of your customers.”
—Kevin Welborn, Joshua Creek Ranch
“Reinvesting in our business means prioritizing continuous growth and improvement by investing in our team members and resources… As a business serving the community for nearly 20 years, reinvestment is vital for staying sharp, innovative, and trustworthy.”

FOR THE BUSINESS OWNER WHO IS SKEPTICAL OR FEELS LIKE THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO REINVEST, WHAT ENCOURAGEMENT DO YOU HAVE?
W: You can’t afford not to reinvest! If you don’t, your competition will leave you in the dust, and you will lose your best people—most likely to your competition. Yes, it is important to weigh risk-versus-reward potential, and every business has to reinvest according to its own financial thresholds. But if you try to hire and retain the best people, empower them to maximize their strengths, and always try to do the “right thing” for your customers, your appetite toward reinvestment will develop organically and be more feasible and effective.
M: The most valuable resource any business has is its people. When you invest in your team, you not only empower them to serve others well, but you also create a ripple effect of positivity and growth within your organization. Reinvesting in your people builds a foundation of trust, loyalty, and collaboration that will carry your business through challenges and ensure long-term success.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU EXPECT THIS REINVESTMENT TO SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS IN THE FUTURE?
W: Reinvesting in your business over time will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. It won’t always happen as fast as you want, but the alternative is not an option if you want to be successful. Put simply, your business will never reach its full potential without reinvesting in your staff, assets, and operations for the benefit of your customers.
M: Markets fluctuate, and challenges like COVID and inflation arise, but staying true to our values of authenticity and compassion has been—and will continue to be— our guide. Reinvesting in our team ensures we have the tools, mindset, and resilience to adapt and thrive in any environment. As we celebrate 20 years of service to our community this year, we are proud to continue building on this foundation and look forward to many more years of serving generations to come.

FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS, TRIPLE H EQUITHERAPY CENTER HAS BEEN HELPING PEOPLE FACE THEIR CHALLENGES AND RIDE TO FULLER LIVES.
HEALING THROUGH HORSEPOWER
Many people in the Hill Country ride horses for work or fun, but others have found wholeness, empowerment, and transformation on a horse’s back. Through the profound humanhorse connection, individuals facing physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges have gained confidence, strength, and life skills that extend far beyond the arena. As they say, “Hope, healing, and happiness” are the heart of Triple H.
From its humble beginnings—two horses and a kitchen office—Triple H has grown into a thriving organization with a 20-horse barn, an equine retirement facility, a covered arena, and miles of therapy trails. The center’s holistic approach fosters physical, mental, and spiritual growth for participants of all ages, including children and veterans. “It’s really exciting to see how those three things—mind, body, and spirit—come together with the horse
“OUR CLIENTS LEAVE STRONGER, EMPOWERING NOT JUST THEMSELVES BUT THEIR FAMILIES TOO.”
Triple H Equitherapy Center has provided equine-assisted therapy at its home in Pipe Creek for nearly three decades. This nonprofit has supported individuals by using the unique bond between humans and horses to promote healing and personal growth.
Triple H was founded in 1995 by Kathy and Kent Harbaugh when Kathy was inspired by her lifelong passion for horses and her experiences abroad. While Kent was stationed in London as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, Kathy encountered therapeutic riding and even exercised the Queen’s horses. She was so inspired that she pursued a degree in special education and became a certified therapeutic riding instructor. After settling in Texas, she and Kent saw a need for equine therapy and established Triple H on 210 acres in Pipe Creek.
and the natural setting,” says Executive Director Ginger Eways. “That kind of empowerment strengthens not just our clients but their families as well.”
THE ESSENCE OF EQUITHERAPY
Equine therapy is rooted in how horses naturally communicate and respond to human emotions, making them powerful partners in mental wellness and personal development. This methodology harnesses horses' unique ability to reflect human emotions. Before mounting, participants engage in groundwork exercises, learning to communicate with their horses through body language, energy, and intention. Horses provide immediate, honest feedback—if approached with tension or frustration, they respond in kind.
Key concepts such as trust, boundaries, and mutual respect are central to the process, particularly for at-risk youth who may struggle with personal boundaries. Horses enforce limits naturally—firm yet nonjudgmental—helping participants internalize the importance of mutual respect and healthy relationships. This creates a space for self-reflection, teaching participants to regulate emotions and adjust their approach, skills that translate into everyday relationships with family, peers, and colleagues.
HORSE-RIDER BONDING
At Triple H, the partnership between horse and rider is not assigned; it is chosen. In fact, it’s the horses who select the riders. This unique process begins after clients receive a safety briefing on approaching and interacting with the horses. Then, the horses are released into a pasture—free of halters, lead ropes, or any restraints—while the clients move among them. Staff members remain at a distance, carefully observing each horse’s body language and interactions. Some horses make an obvious choice by following or nudging a specific person, for example. In contrast, others communicate more subtly, perhaps by stepping away from others once they’ve found their match. This intuitive process forms the foundation of a deep, authentic connection.
“IN JUST EIGHT WEEKS, THE PROGRESS OUR CLIENTS MAKE IS AMAZING.”
For every rider, the bond with their horse plays a crucial role in their therapeutic journey. For some, especially those with physical challenges like cerebral palsy, the focus may be on developing core strength and stamina through riding. For others, it may be about building trust, learning to communicate, or simply finding comfort in the presence of their equine friend. Regardless of the goal, the horse-rider relationship becomes a catalyst for transformation— one built on mutual respect, understanding, and a shared journey toward growth.
COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMS
Triple H Equitherapy offers tailored programs for people facing physical, cognitive, emotional, and social challenges. Sessions structured around personal goals are guided by trained staff and volunteers, providing transformative experiences. Across all programs, Triple H emphasizes individualized instruction, real-time feedback from the horses, and a foundation of trust between participants and their equine partners.  “In just eight weeks, the progress our clients make is amazing,” Eways says. “Many continue for years, advancing and repeating sessions, but even in that short time, we see real transformation.”
With a dedicated team of 13 staff members and a strong volunteer network, Triple H remains committed to empowering individuals through the healing power of horses. The programs designed to achieve this goal include:
Riding to Independence
This program helps individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities develop independence through therapeutic riding. Lessons focus on each rider’s abilities and incorporate activities like navigating obstacles, issuing commands, and improving coordination. With nearly 100 clients participating weekly, volunteers are crucial in ensuring safe and effective sessions.
Hooves, Hearts & Heroes
By collaborating with local school districts, this program integrates equine-assisted activities with classroom goals for special education students. Sessions support cognitive, social, and emotional growth through hands-on learning. For instance, students working on emotional regulation practice breathing techniques with their horse, receiving instant feedback as the horse mirrors their relaxation.
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy
Designed for those who have experienced trauma, this program helps individuals—particularly veterans and at-risk youth— develop relationship-building skills. Facilitated by mental health professionals, sessions use equine interactions to reinforce trust, communication, and emotional regulation, providing a safe space for healing and personal growth.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
In every program it offers, Triple H thrives on the dedication of its volunteers, whose support makes equine-assisted therapy possible for nearly 100 clients each week. Because the staff stays small, volunteers play a crucial part in ensuring each session's safety, comfort, and success.
Every role is critical. Horse handlers bring experience working with horses, taking responsibility for grooming, tacking, and leading the horse during therapy. Equally important are the sidewalkers, who directly support clients, particularly those with mobility challenges. Some participants who move from a wheelchair onto the horse using a ramp need assistance with balance and stability. Sidewalkers walk beside them, offering encouragement and reassurance, guaranteeing that each rider feels secure and confident as they engage in therapy. Together, these volunteers create a supportive environment where individuals can focus on their growth, healing, and connection with their horses.
At Triple H, community support isn’t just valued; it’s the foundation of everything they do. Whether leading a horse, assisting a rider, or helping behind the scenes, every volunteer plays a vital role in changing lives.
TROTTING TOWARD NEW HORIZONS
With a commitment to high standards of care and a dedicated community of staff and volunteers, Triple H continues to set itself apart as a leader in equine-assisted therapy. Thanks to a recent significant gift, adding a covered outdoor arena has expanded capacity and opportunities, allowing Triple H to branch out into new, innovative programs beyond traditional equine therapy. New programs designed for a wider audience include specialized equine therapy clinics, leadership and self-care workshops for professionals, corporate team-building programs, and other health and wellness experiences.
As Triple H looks to the future, its core vision remains steadfast: to provide a safe, supportive space where individuals can grow, heal, and build lasting connections. Whether through riding, groundwork, or therapeutic interactions, Triple H's influence extends beyond its riders, touching the volunteers, families, and entire community who come together to make this work possible.
“Equine therapy benefits people of all ages and backgrounds,” Eways relates. “It’s incredible to witness how such a broad range of people experience growth and healing through their connection with horses.” With continued innovation and expansion, Triple H is excited to reach more people than ever, ensuring that anyone—regardless of background or ability—can experience the life-changing power of a friendly horse.

“WHY DIDN’T I DO THIS SOONER?”
YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT TO MAKE AN INVESTMENT TOWARD PAIN-FREE LIVING.
ARTICLE BY TANESHA DILLARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VM
The 2023 National Health Interview Survey reported that nearly a quarter of adults in the U.S. experience chronic pain, with almost 10% of them suffering from high-impact pain that prevents them from doing some kind of daily activity. And as the age groups go up, so do the percentages.
By the time patients visit Dr. Matthew Morrey—a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and founder of Ortho San Antonio—they are ready to address their musculoskeletal conditions, one of the main causes of chronic pain. Most of them are active and want to remain so, but the pain has limited them, sometimes severely. “My job as a hip and knee surgeon is to say there’s no reason to put up with pain if you don’t have to,” Morrey says. Inevitably, one of the first things many patients say after their treatment is that they should have done it 10 years ago. So, why do people wait?
What some patients don’t realize (or admit) is that their pain diminishes their quality of life. To this end, Morrey assesses patients’ ability to sleep, drive, and complete simple tasks. With 20 years of experience, Morrey can cue in on patients wearing flip-flops, slip-on shoes, or shoes with laces knotted way off to one side. A change in patients’ gait patterns can occur as a way to compensate for their pain. Morrey says patients often feel pain in their lower back and ankles because they’re trying to shift constantly and that it’s common for depression to coincide with chronic hip and knee pain. Many patients were advised to wait as long as possible before having surgery, which Morrey acknowledges as old guidance. “Now, we start to
look at it more as preemptive,” he says, “meaning at some stage they are going to need that hip and knee replaced.”
For each patient he sees, Morrey treats them conservatively until the time comes for the next step. Though surgery is not always required, he says it should be considered once physical therapy and pain management have run their course. Because of the remarkable advancements in surgical techniques, longer-lasting implants, and post-operative pain management, Morrey says that recoveries are more often accelerated than in the past.
“My job as a hip and knee surgeon is to say there’s no reason to put up with pain if you don’t have to.”
While the standard recovery time for hip and knee surgery is still one year, Morrey says patients experience the biggest gains in pain reduction and increased movement during the first three months. He refers to the following nine months as “fine-tuning,” particularly for active patients.  Morrey says, “For every few steps forward they take, they might take a half step back because they’re using muscles that they haven’t used in a while… But as long as you’re making progress, that’s okay.”
There are other factors to consider in recovery that can reinforce the advice not to wait. Morrey says younger patients are more likely to be in good health and have more reserve capacity to recover sooner. For older patients, he says, “Their medical comorbidities catch up with them a little bit, so sometimes recovery from that is a little more onerous, a little more daunting for them.” Underlying health conditions, including diabetes, smoking, and obesity, can also impact a patient’s recovery time.
Surgeons at Ortho San Antonio spend an extensive amount of time counseling, managing expectations, and ensuring patients can make an informed decision, including which physician best meets their needs. Morrey likens the patient-doctor relationship to a marriage. He says, “You need to find the right person. If it’s not working out, that might be a bad situation.”
Morrey recognizes that people have different perspectives on what healthcare means to them. He warns against relying solely on the internet or hearsay because patients can incorrectly self-diagnose. Morrey says, “It never hurts to just see someone and get an idea, a baseline, of what’s going on because not all pain requires surgery…The more informed the patient is, the easier it is to start making decisions moving forward.”

The Way. THE WALK.
The Journey Along Spain’s Holy Camino de Santiago Is the Destination
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY SARAH BROOKE LYONS
We left home the day after Christmas—my 20-year-old daughter, my husband of 20 days, and me. After 48 hours of zig-zagging through airports and train stations, we finally reached our starting point along the Camino de Santiago in Sarria, Spain. With Christmas lights still adorning streetlamps and frost on the grass, we began our chilly 100mile trek on the ancient pilgrimage route toward the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where the remains of Saint James rest in peace.
Since the idea first came to us, our motivation for such a seemingly unnecessary journey had evolved. Finally there, we were journeying not for miles or exercise but for something we could not name—perhaps a shift or a quiet revelation. We set aside expectations and let the road unfold as it wished. Like us, pilgrims from around the world have walked these paths for over a thousand years, seeking spiritual renewal, personal growth, or simply the experience of the walk itself.
That is the way of the pilgrim: laying aside the need for answers to looming questions and creating space to ask better ones. Long before us and long after us, sojourners tread along this path. The choice to walk is the choice to step into that ancient journey, hoping that the transformation experienced by countless travelers before will remain true for us as well.
Physically, the hardest part of the Camino de Santiago was not the walking itself but the moment before—the hesitation in placing my feet on the floor each morning, as I was met with an acute awareness of every sore muscle. But soon after, my body would warm up, falling into rhythm, and I was ready to go again. Each day brought its own trial and reward. Averaging 15 miles per day, I was pushed beyond the comfort zone I had created for myself.
The Camino demanded discomfort. It would have been easy to choose a quiet week in the Maldives or the post-Christmas warmth of home. But meaning is rarely found in ease. Each day brought unfamiliar beds, foreign meals, uncertainty, and exhaustion, yet we continued—one step at a time. There was beauty in the difficulty, in the way the body learned to move through pain, in the way the mind settled into silence. Yet I found satisfaction in the movement itself.
There is something about long walks that feels both ancient and necessary, as if our bodies were made for it in a way we have forgotten. I often overlook how accessible and simple an act of praise it is to simply move the body in the way it was created to move. I dream of days filled with long walks, but real life demands practicality. What took us six days on foot could have been completed in a car in an hour and a half with little thought. My daily commute to the office, if walked, would take six hours, yet I arrive via I-10 in twenty minutes, sitting in my car the whole way. The world is built for speed, not for the patient accumulation of miles. But something is lost in that efficiency.
Walking is a meditative movement. It does not demand great exertion or force, nor does it require me to break through barriers. It is simply the act of being in motion, one step at a time. From that simplicity, so much emerges—a clearing of the mind, a release of stress, an awareness of the world unfolding with each footfall along the path. Along this Camino path, yellow arrows silently guide the way. Left by those who have gone before, they sometimes appear on concrete markers in the distance or are spraypainted along walls. Google Maps attempted to reroute us
along faster roadways, and the book I had purchased, full of elevation guides and section maps, proved pointless. Instead, we searched for these yellow arrows, and always, they were there. If one was not immediately visible, it would soon appear.
For 100 miles, this was the rhythm: one step, then another, then the search for the next arrow. At times, it seemed as if the arrows emerged from nowhere, appearing just when we had certainly lost our way. We would reach a crossroads, unsure of the path, and suddenly, a concrete marker would rise ahead of us, a bright yellow arrow pointing forward, commanding, “Go right” or “Straight ahead.” And so we walked, trusting that the next guidepost would appear.
Through hamlets where cows peeked from stone barns, past crumbling walls overtaken by vines, we followed the arrows as we traced the footsteps of those who had come before. The hush of the wind. The crisp scent of leaves crushed underfoot. There was no need to rush. The landscape held its own time, and I fell into step with its simplicity. A thousand years of pilgrims had walked this path before me, and a thousand more would follow.
CONTINUED >
“THAT IS THE WAY OF THE PILGRIM: LAYING ASIDE THE NEED FOR ANSWERS TO LOOMING QUESTIONS AND CREATING SPACE TO ASK BETTER ONES. LONG BEFORE US AND LONG AFTER US, SOJOURNERS TREAD ALONG THIS PATH.”
And isn’t that the way of God’s guidance? There may not always be a clear sign in front of me at every moment, but if I keep looking, if I keep moving forward, there is always one just ahead. If I follow the next arrow—the next bit of right direction—I can keep going, step by step, mile by mile, trusting that I am being led where I need to be.
So, what was the great takeaway? Perhaps it is not something to be captured in a single thought but something that lingers and unfolds over time. It pointed me back to God—not in a grand revelation, but in the quiet knowing that I was exactly where I needed to be. That the walk itself was a prayer. That the simple act of placing one foot in front of the other continues to be enough.

NIGHTLASE ®
Sleep No Matter the Distance
As we age the flaccidity(looseness) of tissues increases. This is especially important for the entire airway. Upper airways become more restricted due to hard structures and soft tissue hypertrophy (Enlargement). The result is less airflow or volume. This resistance can be detrimental to sleep quality and athletic performance.
NightLase ® utilizes a twin laser system patented by Fotona Lasers. This procedure is a nonablative(no surgical cutting) technique utilizing laser impulses to tighten connective tissue, muscles, and their attachments to hold open the soft palate area and the upper nasal passages. The net result is increased airflow and volume during normal function, sleeping, and athletic performance.
This twin laser system is FDA approved for safety and effectiveness on the tissues treated. The standard procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and needs to be repeated 21 days apart for 3-4 sessions. No anesthetic is needed, and there is no downtime. Protocol maintenance is usually a one-session touch-up every 1-2 years or as needed.
FAMILY TIME is the Best Investment
These simple, yet intentional ideas can make the best memories.
EAT DINNER TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.
This meaningful time around the table is where connections happen. Let everyone share good moments from the day or something they struggled with. Create a jar of conversation starters, exchange giggles and cook up something delicious.
CREATE SURPRISES
Everyone likes to feel special – and surprised. The littlest things make the biggest impact: A backyard picnic; a sleepover in an indoor fort; an after-school ice cream treat; a bathroom spa day.
CREATE FAMILY TRADITIONS
Build weekly or monthly traditions –movie nights with popcorn, board game marathons, a gratitude jar, evening bike rides, living room dance parties, even a family book club to discover old favorites and new reads.
EXPRESS LOVE AND GRATITUDE
In busy seasons, it’s easy to forget to let a loved one feel appreciated and thought of. Tuck a hand-written note in a lunch box or give an unexpected hug; spend time sharing what you’re thankful for about them.
KEEP GENERATIONS LINKED
Consider Sunday meals with grandparents or weekly phone calls if distance separates. Invite them to share their childhood stories and treasured memories. Start a yearly family scrapbook filled with favorite photographs and vacation souvenirs.
