Feather your nest.

NOVEMBER 2015

I

t’s November, the weather has turned and it feels like it’s time to burrow in and do a bit of nesting. For me that usually includes making a pot of soup, pouring a glass of wine and curling up with a good book.

Our homes are the most important place we have, for good reason. We raise our families in them and because of that, they’re precious and we tend to take great pride in them. A long time ago I discovered these words by Willam Morris, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." Morris was perhaps ahead of his time, but just in time for me because I’ve been quite diligent about sizing down over the years. In fact, simplifying and sizing down has become my new normal. I’ve consistently rid myself of possessions over the years until I’ve reached a point where I’m comfortable knowing that everything I own is special to me; it's literally either useful or beautiful.

Speaking of nesting, one of my favorite possessions is a birdbath. For many years it sat, doing what it was meant to do, in my garden, but over the years it has made its way into the house. It’s one of those rare treasures that I can’t picture myself getting rid of. Indoors, it’s been repurposed into a nightstand, an end table and I’ve even used it as a Christmas tree stand. It’s beautiful. It’s useful and I adore it. There’s lots to adore in our November issue. We’re focusing on the home, how to find the right one, and how to make it everything you’d like it to be. I hope you enjoy our tips, tools, trends and inspirations and find them useful while feathering your own nest.

ith the holidays fast approaching, opportunities for delicious sweets and elegant drinks are bound to be plentiful. Versatile and available year round, California dried figs are naturally sweet, nutrient rich and full of flavor. They also make a great snack during the busy holidays. Because these figs are dried, they partner well with wine and spirits and can be infused with more flavor to create delectable desserts. Kitchen Before

on and Stacey Guill had been talking about remodeling the kitchen in their Spring Meadows home on the Boise River for quite some time when they took a recent trip to Paris. There, they stumbled across an Arclinea showroom that had exactly what they wanted, and they knew it was time. When they got home, they visited the nearest U.S. showroom for the Italian kitchen design company in San Francisco, and were told they needed detailed drawings and plans for their remodel in order to proceed. That’s when Suzie Hall, president and principal designer of Boise’s award-winning Cornerstone Interior Design, entered the picture. “When I met with them, my first thought was, ‘How is this very contemporary-style kitchen going to fit in with the rest of their not-exactly-contemporary home,’” says Suzie. She immediately saw the potential and took on the challenge, but achieving her vision would require changing more than just the kitchen. In fact, she wanted to remodel their entire downstairs living space. “They have this beautiful location on the Boise River, with a nice patio area right outside from the living room, but they told me they hardly ever go out there because it’s just too awkward to access," she explains. "So there was this wonderful opportunity to create a great indoor-outdoor space and at the same time bring their living room into sync with the new kitchen design.” The Guills were excited about her ideas, even when they learned that she also wanted to remodel their existing fireplace. It turns out Stacey and Ron are big fans of the iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who also had a big influence on Suzie’s career. Wright believed that the hearth is the center of the house, and that mutually-shared belief led to the creation of a truly unique centerpiece for the whole project. “The kitchen was the starting point, so we knocked out the whole wall around the old fireplace and created a real focal point for the space with the new custom fireplace,” says Suzie. Ron, a retired mining engineer, wanted it to have a cave-like feel. Suzie layered 3/16" steel plates from Erwin Metal Fabrication, with 3/4" quartzite slabs fashioned by Artistic Tile and Granite, to create an earthy, yet contemporary look surrounding a jagged steel surround that opens both front and back. The Cornerstone team is nothing if not collaborative, with their clients as well as their expert cadre of professional designers, project managers, contractors and subs, so when Ron wanted an even more jagged look for his “cave” than Cornerstone’s original design called for, he was able to personally work with the metal fabricator to get what he envisioned by rolling back the edges of the steel around the opening. Much to their delight, the new kitchen is almost exactly the same as the one Stacy and Ron fell in love with in Paris. CONTINUED >

INSPIRED LIVING ON THE BOISE RIVER

(CONTINUED)

Living Room

The sitting area off the pantry was next on Suzie’s list. She’s quick to say that getting to know your clients is not just a key part of a successful design, the joy of making new friends is what really makes it all come together. Knowing that Stacy is a writer, and that both she and Ron love books, Cornerstone envisioned the space as a library. “They wanted a more contemporary color palette to go along with their new look, and that really helped to brighten that area up," says Suzie. "We added some new furniture and some bookshelves, and now you can sit in there and look through the fireplace to the living room and all the way outside. The whole living space just has a much more open, airy feel to it now. Ron and Stacy have both said it’s made a world of difference.” One thing that sets Suzie’s designs apart from everyone else’s is her holistic approach. “I like to touch everything in the homes and spaces we design, from the interior architecture to the lighting, and I’m especially a fan of the new technology that makes homes smarter and helps contribute to the overall comfort inside," Suzie explains. "I don’t want to ignore anything.” In keeping with that philosophy, the pantry underwent quite possibly the most miraculous change of all in this project, becoming a room unto itself. All the shelves were 20

removed and the back wall became a wine wall. Next to it, a wet bar with an antique mirrored tile backsplash. And continuing the spirit of collaboration, the Guill’s friendship with restauranteur John Berryhill resulted in a door fashioned from wooden wine crates that closes off a storage space under the stairs. With the kitchen now more open to the living room, which itself is accented by a striking, custom-designed Lindley Glass panel, access to the outside patio area is easier and more direct. Raising the outside wall and adding a bank of windows over the original picture windows, brings in more of the river view along with an abundance of natural light. New flagstone pavers and a fire pit brightened up the patio space, and replacing the old, canvas covering with a rising metal canopy brings the contemporary feel of the interior outside as well. In the end, about 1,700 square feet of their 3,200-square-foot home was renovated. Basically, everything but the bedrooms and bathrooms. The project lasted 15 months, with construction taking up the last seven months. And while Suzie felt it all seemed to move along pretty fast, she is quick to acknowledge that it always seems longer to the clients who are living through it. Either way, thanks to Suzie Hall and Cornerstone Interior Design, Ron and Stacy now have a beautiful, new, contemporary work of art that they call home.

A family-style approach to furniture. ARTICLE LETTIE STRATTON PHOTOGRAPHY TREASURE VALLEY IMAGE

t's that time of year! Time to burrow in, switch things up and do something new and different with your living space. Are you in the market for current and trendy furniture and home accessories without spending the big bucks? You might want to check out Model Home Furnishings. They offer designer-style furniture for 30 to 50 percent less than name brand stores. Customers can visit the store’s showroom or look through an online catalog of more than 15,000 items for sale. “We sell to local builders and stagers and also let the public buy items at the same low prices,” says Brittney Byrne, manager of the store’s Eagle location. “Everything is brand new and we carry a wide variety of options. We go to the Las Vegas World Furniture Market, which has every manufacturer you can think of, to pick out what we want to carry each year. We really keep up on the trends.” Model Home Furnishings offers a huge selection of items to choose from, from modern pieces, to traditional, and everything in between. A quick scan of their robust online catalog reveals various styles of chairs, tables, rugs, lamps, cabinets, mirrors, wall art, beds, desks, entertainment centers, and plenty more. “You can change a whole room with one small thing, and right now we’re selling a lot of accent pieces ranging in price from $99 to $500,” Byrne says. “We’re also seeing a lot of poster beds, shabby chic and rustic modern styles, lots of wood with metal accents, and linens and teal.” Byrne says Model Home Furnishings is unique because of their full-service design and delivery offerings. “We are in control of your furniture from beginning to end,” she says. “All of our staff have been doing this for a really long time. We offer in-home design help and we’re really good about helping in-store if people bring in color schemes or plans.” Model Home Furnishings is a family-owned, family-run business and Byrne has been manager of the Eagle location for eight years. “My dad started the concept 30 years ago,” she explained. “I’ve been part of it my whole life. My whole family has been part of it. We are a small ExtraFurniture.com team and we run a small ship but it works really well for us. We like to have that family atmosphere.” 208-939-2699 Byrne said this atmosphere extends to Model Home Furnish1041 Ancona Avenue #100 ings’ customer service approach. “We’re trying to help you make your house look good, we’re not tryOpen Mon-Sat 11-5 ing to sell you something,” she says. “We let you shop and we will help you when you need it instead of bugging you the whole time. ob Sower is dedicated to making a difference. Whether it’s for his real estate clients, or the youth group that he and his wife work with, he’s all in. Sower is an award winning interior designer with over 14 years of professional experience in the commercial and residential design industry and that makes a huge difference to his clients. He has worked at some of the best design firms in Boise including Hummel Architects, Sprague Solutions, and Strite design + remodel. While gaining this valuable design experience, he has more importantly learned the value of teamwork and customer service. By working on a wide variety of projects ranging from small interior color and material schemes to full design services of multi-million dollar homes, he’s been able to bring a unique and appreciated skill set to the real estate experience. Sower got his start as a realtor in 2010. He’s always loved real estate, but never imagined he’d would be a realtor. He initially was very excited about purchasing homes and remodeling them for his investment portfolio. He liked the idea of taking something that needs work, and applying a vision to it and improving it. He had no idea how similar that process was to real estate until he was forced to reconsider the design profession in 2008.

Sower recalls, “As the market began to deteriorate, the people that would typically call us for remodeling were holding tight. Ultimately I had no choice but to leave the remodel and design profession to support my family.” Sower obtained his license in 2010 and started on his own at Keller Williams. He felt they were the only choice due to their strong commitment to culture. After being on his own for about six months, he was asked to interview with Lysi Bishop’s team. He jumped at the opportunity and began working in new construction in the Harris Ranch development. Sower feels “Being on Lysi’s team is probably the only reason I am where I

am today. She taught me so much in every way and I regularly look back on that experience to guide me in my day to day operations. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity of working closely with her and her team.” In 2013, Sower decided to take the next step and start his own team. So began Sower Real Estate. He’s very proud to say that in 2014 his production was number three for Keller Williams Realty Boise for individual agent production. That’s for about 500 agents, most of which are individual. Sower knows his background in design and remodeling are what makes him stand out as a realtor. “Marketing consistency and branding are huge to me and that translates into successful sales for my clients. My staging and remodeling experience has been tremendously helpful from the get go.” Sower definitely believes in the power of what he’s doing. “The pluses are being able to work with people and helping them accomplish such an important task. Buying and selling a home is not just a big financial deal, but it’s huge emotionally too! I love that I get to be a person’s true advocate all along that process. I think the other pluses are being in an industry where I can literally grow my team as large as possible and provide opportunities for others to improve their lives. I love that.”

LOCAL LIVING CULINARY NEIGHBORHOOD ADVENTURES! PIZZA PIE CAFÉ 2757 S Broadway Avenue, Boise, Idaho (208) 426-0075 Monday – Thursday 11am – 9 pm | Friday – Saturday 11 am – 10 pm | Sunday Closed

Are you looking for freshness? At Pizza Pie Café, they live and breathe good pizza. From the fresh ingredients on the salad bar until your last bite of dessert, they work to ensure your meal is delicious. Pizza Pie Café attracts customers with their array of endless options on their all-you-can-eat pizza, pasta, and salad buffet. This unique restaurant concept has built quite the reputation for quality at an affordable price. Beginning back in 2003 as Craigo’s Gourmet Pizza in Rexburg, Idaho, there are now 16 Pizza Pie Cafe locations including one now in Boise. Start your meal off right with the salad bar which offers a wide selection of fresh toppings to wet anyone’s appetite. Everything is cut fresh daily. This is the opening to a great experience, so pace yourself to save room for the main course! A slow rising pizza dough recipe creates their signature crust, rich in flavor with a chewy texture. Don’t settle for just one kind of pizza! There are several available on the buffet at any time, with more constantly being prepared. Bring out the child in you with the cheese pizza, or be adventurous and try something you’ve never had before. A favorite is the Firefighter or the Spud-o-licious pizza which features potatoes, cheese, and bacon. And don’t forget to try the Garlic Knots. The pastas are incredible featuring four signature home-made sauces. Choose from Alfredo, Carbonara, Spicy Sausage, or Roasted Red Pepper. And then select your noodle type and shape. Create a custom pasta dish, prepared right before your eyes. Your mission is to end your meal with a dessert pizza. Their #1 requested dessert pizza is the Red, White, and Blue. This is a sugar cookie with their home-made frosting topped with blueberries and strawberries, served only in July. Other amazing dessert pizzas such as Oreo, Cookie Dough, Cinnamon Sticks, or Apple Peach and Raspberry are served year round. Everyone dining at Pizza Pie Café is having their every craving satisfied. Enjoy!

ARTICLE PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON | PHOTOGRAPHY TREASURE VALLEY IMAGE

“I

want to build a permanent campground for sick, healing and handicapped kids,” shares Ted Challenger, owner/operator of The Amsterdam Lounge. “It's been a dream of ours for 20+ years and the system and team are in place to take this journey.” Challenger moved to Boise from Atlanta in 1986. He’s also lived in Durango, Colorado. “I always felt I was supposed to be out west with its big wide open spaces,” reflects Challenger. “I love the people of Boise--their spirit to make this the best city you can find anywhere." He purchased the Bistro, a legendary party spot for college kids, when he was 22. “Not many people grew up in this town without having a drink in there.” But on St. Patrick’s Day, Challenger closed down the Bistro after being in business for 23 years. He revamped the space to create the Amsterdam Lounge, which opened in mid May. “I wanted to test myself and create something that is more about who I am now and who I am becoming.” He decided that he could regain those grown college customers with a grown up version of the space. "This concept is designed for the direction Boise is going, not necessarily like how it is now," he explains. "I did the same for China Blue, my dance club. The first two years were hard, but the rest is a history of success with that club.” If the past is any indicator of the future, the Amsterdam Lounge will be a success. “The name Amsterdam came from a cruise ship I worked on,” shares Challenger. “I love the European way of life. It’s a slower more relaxed pace than the United States. When I was on the cruise ship I was amazed at all the small spaces for lounging, art work, incredible beverages and cuisine, and the ability to sit back and watch the world go by. I studied Amsterdam and will travel there to find art and things to enhance the experience of the Amsterdam Lounge. “We are one of the largest spaces to offer such high quality cocktails, wine list, craft beers, and our truly amazing coffee bar. All these elements are usually done in small space lounges. If you’re tired of being crammed into small spaces, or having to whisper your conversations because you’re on top of people, you will love all the

space and comfortable seating you have in the lounge. We offer people room to explore and enjoy small quaint social situations, or join in on the fun in larger groups.” From comfortable seating for fostering the lost art of conversation to areas that offer games (pool, shuffleboard, and an 80s arcade), the Amsterdam is designed to appeal to groups large and small. Sarah Crowell helped design the Amsterdam Lounge. “Her creative talents are endless, and she helped bring the ideas to fruition,” notes Challenger, who found her easy to work with. She guided Challenger on how to bring what he wanted to reality. “She has an amazing eye. It was the most fun working with her.” Other key players that helped realize his vision are Clay Carley, Max Lylie, Paul Valentine. "And the best crew a businessman could ask for," Challenger adds. The Amsterdam offers a relaxing oasis in downtown Boise for patrons 21 and over. “The design of the lounge is to promote socializing, with visual stimulation that creates an idea for you to explore,” notes Challenger. “This is a work in progress; it will grow and morph so much as we continue to grow and express ourselves.” Lounge Bites include the popular Brie which is flash fried for a few seconds to seal in the flavor of the cheese. The individual wheel is served warm with Chipotle Marion Berry coulis, toasted baguette, and fresh berries The most popular drinks are the Ginger-Lemongrass Martini, the Chilled Espresso Martini, and The Primal Coffee, which is made with grass fed butter. Challenger’s personal favorite is the Moscow Mule. "It is amazing with fresh locally made Ginger beer,” he describes. The Amsterdam offers nonalcoholic drinks too– any coffee drink you can imagine, tea and kombucha. “We offer the most amazing coffee: Fonte out of Seattle, one of the best roasters in the Northwest.” “I have been in the nightclub/hospitality business for 25 years,” says Challenger. “I am self taught with much help from others.” Challenger is up for the next challenge, besides the campground for needy children. “I am getting ready to go into the coffee shop business around the valley in the next few months.” We’ll be ready to camp out on his next doorstep.

Parting Thoughts

Home Real Home

WORDS MYQYILLYN SMITH

I

’m a creative. I pretend to be a designer. My entire job is to encourage women that they can create a beautiful, meaningful home. I’ve done it all wrong but I’m learning that it’s really not about the stuff at all, even when making a home. If I want my home to be a place of connection, I’ll ask genuine questions and get to know the people in my home. If I want my home to be a safe place to make a mistake, I’ll lower my standards for myself first, be forgiving of my own mistakes, laugh at myself—and allow others to see that. If I want my home to be inspiring, I’ll pay attention to what inspires me. If I want my home to be real, I’ll learn to embrace the imperfect, find the beauty in the undone, the broken, the unkempt, the everdayness and the mess. If I want my home to be comfortable, I’ll first stop apologizing and focus on others instead of myself. If I want my home to be a place of rest, I’ll consider my attitude and the tone I set when I am home. I’ll allow and plan for restful spaces.

38

Boise Lifestyle | November 2015

This is the kind of home and beauty we have to fight for. Anyone can put pretty stuff in a room. It takes intention to furnish a home with grace and rest and acceptance. I’m up for the challenge. I want to see past the worst and focus on the better. I want to search for the real beauty just waiting to be recognized. I want to make a home on purpose – with purpose. I’m making home a safe, inspiring and life-giving place so we can go out and be who we were created to be. The Joneses don’t need to be kept up with, and secretly, they are tired of setting the mythical standard. Homes are there to serve people, not the other way around. May your home serve you and others so fully that it’s worn thin and beautiful in all the right places. Myqyillyn Smith is a renowned author and blogger. Read her book, The Nesting Place: It Doesn’t Have to be Perfect to be Beautiful, or visit her blog, TheNester.com, for more inspiring words about home, and grace. Reprinted with permission.
