FASHION FOR THE CITY OF LOVE CATCH THE SPIRIT OF STE. CHAPELLE YMCA’S MASTER TRACK PROGRAM

Lifestyle Letter

Hello Boise!

OCTOBER 2016

I

'll say it again—Hello Boise! And welcome to October. When you think of this particular month, what comes to mind? Perhaps it's the spookiness of Halloween and the idea of Boise's little rugrats dressed up as this year's popular icons knocking on your doors for a sweet treat. Or maybe it's the frantic thought that the time is ticking away to find those perfect holiday gifts for your favorite people. But here at Boise Lifestyle, we only have one thing—okay, two things—on our minds this month: Sports and refreshments. If you dig a little deeper into this month's issue, you'll see why. Part of it is because of a Boise program that wholeheartedly embraces aging and athletics: the Master's Track and Field program sponsored by the Boise Downtown YMCA. Flip on over to page 22 to read about the program, its founder Jack Ward, and two of the program's members—Pat Fujii and Angela Kerber. But don't forget the refreshments. As part of our "Beer and Wine" theme, we've included a profile highlighting the rise of Idaho winemakers and Cinder Winery—a winery in the "wine and beer district" of Garden City that was established in 2006. Find out why founder Melanie Krause compares making wine to making soup over on page 26. Also included this issue is an unique DIY project and a pickle recipe to use up the last of your summer cucumbers. Have a great October, Boise, and as always, thanks for letting us share our great community with you every month. Until next time,

ooking for a getaway, or perhaps planning a wedding? Look no further than enriching you and friends with a visit to Ste. Chapelle. You will find this enchanting Idaho getaway tucked away in one of Idaho’s beautiful wine growing regions: the Snake River Basin area. Visitors to Ste. Chapelle are greeted with open wrought iron gates and the French-inspired tasting room beckons you atop aptly named Winery Hill. The Snake River Valley area is rich with history as it came into the spotlight as “the Snake River Valley AVA." In 2007 a petition was granted for the area to be designated as an American Viticulture Area. The magic of the Snake River Valley AVA is found in the ancient Lake Idaho bed, which it overlays, creating its natural boundaries. The panoramic views and diverse agriculture of this enchanting valley make it a favorite amongst local growers. In the hands of these talented winemakers, such soils consistently deliver wines that reflect and capture the essence of the Snake River Valley. From high on Winery Hill, Ste. Chapelle’s winery is home to thousands

16

Boise Lifestyle | October 2016

of acres of rich orchards and farmland in Southwestern Idaho, known as Sunny Slope. Ste. Chapelle received acknowledgement and a warm welcome from Precept Wine in 2012 to its Northwest Family of Wineries-Sparkling as a Jewel in the Crown of the Winery Industry. As you enter the winery's tasting room to taste one of its famous wines, or as you enjoy a savory appetizer outside on the veranda with friends, you can feel the breezy feel of its decor, inspired by the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. Ste. Chapelle plays host to a variety of wines that are popular with distinction and taste. Such wines range from Riesling and Chardonnay to Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Its popular “Soft” series continues to expand. Depending on the scope of your weekend adventure, there is always something going on. Some of the recent concert series this year included: Ian McFeron Band, The Blues Brothers, Steve Fulton band and others. As Idaho enters into fall, so will Ste. Chapelle, having played host to The Snake River Valley Harvest Festival -The Big Wow!

On the horizon for the remaining year is: HALLOWEEN THEMED WINERY AFTER HOURS WITH LEE PENN SKY

Come “wine” down the week at Ste. Chapelle every fourth Friday of each month. Enjoy local bands, artists and entertainment while sipping on wine and taking in the breathtaking views of the Snake River Valley. Light appetizers available for purchase. Ticket includes your first glass of wine. This month features Lee Penn Sky — his Americana tunes pair perfectly with the Halloween-decorated tasting room. GETTING MARRIED & PLANNING A WEDDING?

Ste. Chapelle is an ideal setting for your wedding and gathering. The outdoors of this serene park are simple, yet elegant, and incorporate a lit gazebo, marriage suite and breathtaking views of the sunsets. For your indoor occasion, Ste. Chapelle offers a stunning dining room with vaulted cathedral ceilings and the wonderful view of vineyards, the plantations of Sunny Slope, the Snake River and the Owyhee Mountains. STE. CHAPELLE GIVES BACK

Most recently, some of these charities have included: The Marsing Disaster auction, Donation events for Children’s Hospitals, and, most recently, West Valley’s Humane Society’s off-site dog adoption event at which a variety of dogs were adopted into forever homes! A portion of the proceeds from the Snake River Valley Harvest Festival is set aside for supporting the Idaho Guard and a reserve family support fund in remembrance of our fallen heroes. Treat yourself and friends to a refreshing time at Ste. Chapelle. Easy to access with minimum driving time from Boise, Nampa or Caldwell. SteChapelle.com

On the corner of 11th and Main Street, in downtown Boise, is the historic Owyhee building. The Owyhee has served the city for over a century and has been a backdrop for many a Boise memory book. Now it will become the home of the Owyhee Tavern, slated to open in “late September,” says Barry Werner, co-owner of the restaurant. Much like the other Owyhee spaces, the Tavern’s design will pay homage to the historic nature of the building and will have a polished, urban feel. New memories will be made here shortly. The Owyhee Tavern is the brainchild of John and Kristy Toth, along with Barry, and went from a dream to a plan of action in November of 2015. The three owners have been very successful with their first neighborhood restaurant, Tavern at Bown Crossing. Downtown Boise has been evolving into a true neighborhood in recent years, so the timing is perfect to bring the local feel they created at Bown to the urban core of the historical building. “We want to bring together the old with the new—modern with an old-school feel,” says Barry. More ideas surfaced with the thought process of bringing a little bit of Seattle and Portland to Boise. One example will be a full oyster bar presentation. “We love oysters,” Barry notes with a smile and a wink! The new restaurant will showcase daily lunch and dinner specials, highlighting Double R Ranch and Snake River Farms American Wagyu steaks and fresh fare from the sea. The atmosphere will be calling out the diners to experience the great, competitively priced entrees. Even the aesthetics of the entrance will be dim, balanced with prismatic lighting, setting a comfortable tone to enjoy good company and great food and wine. Owyhee Tavern will feature Northwest wines, a focus on Idaho, Washington and Oregon vintners. Soon after the Owyhee Tavern’s grand opening, catering services will be offered. Keep them in mind to cater your next major event, fund-raiser, wedding, picnic and/or holiday party.

YMCA's Master Track Program

riter and activist Betty Friedan once said, “Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” Those of us who have sauntered, crashed or headed clawing and screaming into middle age have come to realize new adventures and transformations await us sow we better get busy living. One local entity that wholeheartedly embraces aging is the Master’s Track and Field program, sponsored by the Boise Downtown YMCA. Initially, from 2007 to 2011, the YMCA owned and operated the Idaho State Senior games. In an effort to better promote the games, Jack Ward—20-year volunteer, turned employee and coach—spearheaded the inception of the program, specifically to get mature athletes and non-athletes ready to compete in the senior games. As a member of the Idaho Senior Games entity, Ward knew the YMCA’s involvement would be a crucial catalyst to funnel interest.

Eventually, the board of the Idaho Senior games wanted the event back into their ownership, and with that, the masters track program was continued anyway. Up until now, the program is basically advertised through the YMCA’s site, some social media and word of mouth. “We need to do a better job of marketing the program," Ward says. "We need to make it more public. My goal, on a regular basis, is I would like to have 50 Masters people involved.” Ward, a veteran runner himself and a coach for Victory Charter school in Nampa, says the program is for anyone aged 35 to 85. With 40 to 60 (paid and volunteer) coaches, these mentors have often come up through the program themselves, from elite track and field ranks and through college channels. CONTINUED >

“If you can’t run, you can throw, jump, or race walk. There are events for everyone. You don’t know if you’r e good at something unless you try.”

Angela Kerber Pat Fujii

“We get these younger coaches with older athletes and there is often a bond,” Ward says. "Depending on scheduling, training locations are often at various local high schools, which tends to attract the attention of youth and adults alike." It seems the younger generations who often train with the older athletes become inspired seeing seasoned adults still staying active, vibrant and fun. Pat Fujii at 85 years spry, one of the oldest track and field athletes, originally came through the senior games but often trains during the indoor program, which takes place from October to January. “I have actually been there when 14-year-olds have walked up to her and said I hope I can still do what you’re doing when I’m your age,” Ward says. Joining the YMCA at 68, Fujii was coaxed by other track program members to give it a shot, and she hasn’t slowed a step since. “I was never really athletic in my youth,” she says, yet her events are standing and running long jump, the 5K jog/walk, and 50, 100, 200 and 400-meter sprints. Even her son David is a member of the program competing in long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus events. As a f lorist for Hillcrest Floral for the past five years, a licensed realtor since 1981 and breast cancer survivor, Fujii is known to be quite humble about the accolades that tend to follow her personally and as an athlete. Fujii has been featured in several local papers, and bestowed the Humana’s Game Changers award for 2015 with her son David. Angela Kerber, another self-proclaimed “non-athletic” type, never ran track in high school, as she considered herself more academic in nature. With a daughter competing in Special Olympics, Kerber thought her daughter’s high jump event looked like something new she should try. Hearing about the Idaho Senior games and the masters program through other members and athletes, Kerber investigated further.

Things to know about the Masters Track Program

in great company

• Anyone aged 35 to 85 can participate • Not just running events, but walking, basketball shooting (freeline), swimming and triathlons • Both outdoor summer and indoor winter programs available • Local events are usually free or with low cost, but sanctioned events require a U.S. Track and Field Association membership ($30.00 for one year) • Always a friendly smile to welcome you to the fold

Four years later, Kerber’s long and triple jump skills have garnered her a dozen or more gold medals, six of which she earned at this year’s senior games. Not bad for a 50-something mom, who says “I run marathons, and there I am not naturally competitive, but with track and f ield I am.” As a librarian by day at Boise’s Monroe Elementary and track star by night, Kerber beams, “If not for the masters track program, I would not be competing. My jumping has greatly improved MODEL HOME FURNISHINGS because of the coaching.” Kerber emphatically attempts to recruitLOGO FILES anyone she knows into getting involved. Though anyone who decides to compete in any sanctioned event has to join the U.S. Track and Field Association, the YMCA offers discounts to its track and field participants. For those who think it's too late, Kerber and Fujii have words of wisdom: “Start slowly and build up," Fujii says. "Take exercise classes, and you will make lots of friends." “If you can’t run, you can throw, monday saturday am pm jump or race walk," Kemper says. lthough it may seem like breweries are popping up almost every other week along Chinden, wineries are quietly taking

center stage as visitors discover that Walla Walla and the Willamette Valley might have some competition. Cinder Winery is tucked neatly into what some might call the “wine and beer district” of Garden City, just a stone’s throw from the Split Rail and Syringa Wineries, and Bella Brewing. Cinder doesn’t see nearby wineries as competition, and in fact, would welcome more grape-smashing neighbors. They already host visitors from states as far away as Maryland and Georgia, but the Treasure Valley is poised to become a real wine destination. Cinder Winery was established in 2006 when Melanie Krause began making wine in some rented space before inhabiting their current spot on East 44th in 2008. The industrial building feels vast but welcoming, and you’ll be immediately greeted by Laura Collett, the tasting room’s manager, or Donna Bilotti-Davies, who works in sales. Seated at the long bar, the walls are lined with beautiful bottles that demonstrate the breadth of varieties the winery produces, and a wine tap offers some of the most popular wines straight from the keg—as well as a couple local beers for the "hoppy" types.

Wooden

Wine Crate BY ANGI HOCKETT

W

hen the party's over, what do you do with all the empty wooden wine crates? Well this fun project will solve your

problem. A trendy coffee table is one such piece of furniture that can transform the look, feel and style of a whole room. Let's face it, building a coffee table may not be at the top of your TO DO list, but once you read this easy "How To", you may be inspired to finish off that last bottle of wine in the crate! Let's get started...

Supplies needed 3/4 Inch Plywood cut to the size of your crates once assembled 4 Wooden Crates, mine are from Michaels, but recycle if you can 4 Caster Wheels, size is your choice 1 Inch Wood Screws and Washers Screwdriver Stain or Paint of your choice Paint Brush Optional Satin Polyurethane Optional Glass Top

Coffee Table

FUN PROJECT + WOODEN WINE CRATES = COFFEE TABLE WITH STORAGE AND CHARACTER

STEP 1 Screw a caster in each corner of the plywood

STEP 2 Stain or paint the crates and plywood, and let them dry.

STEP 3 Arrange the crates into a square by laying them on the long side with the top of the crate facing out. Screw the crates to each other on the inside slats. Once complete, all 4 crates should be one solid unit.

STEP 4 Turn the crate unit upside down. Align the plywood upside down on the crates. Screw the plywood and crate together along the edges. Flip the entire piece over and voila! There are also two additional options you may choose. If you want a sheen to your stain, you can add a satin polyurethane. My favorite is the Wipe On Polyurethane by Minwax. You may also choose to have a piece of glass cut for the top to add stability. If you do not add the glass top, there will be a hollow square in the center with the plywood as the base. This can be decorated to your personal style such as decorative pebbles or a plant. It would also be a great place to stash the TV remotes! There are several versions of this DIY project online. Thank you to my friends at Removeandreplace.com for making it simple.

Parting Thoughts

Cool as a Cucumber PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

SMALL BATCH GARLIC & DILL PICKL ES

Makes 5 pint jars. • 3–4 cucumbers

• ½ red onion, sliced and cut in halves • 3 cups apple cider vinegar • 3 cups water • 4 tablespoons of sea salt • 2 teaspoons of organic cane sugar • 1 head of garlic • I bunch of fresh dill • 10 peppercorns • 1 tablespoon chili flakes • 1 tablespoon celery seeds Slice cucumbers into wedges. Bring water and vinegar to boil; mix in sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool. Meanwhile, prep the garlic—peel the garlic cloves and then give them a smash. To assemble the jars, first stack in the pickles and save some room for the other flavors and vinegar mixture. Next, add in dill and garlic. I like to use two to three cloves and about four pinches of dill. Add red onion. I like to do four or five halved, single slices per jar. Next, give a pinch or two of the celery seed and crushed pepper. Once the vinegar mixture has cooled, pour it into the jars making sure to cover the top of the cucumbers. Seal jars well. Refrigerate for one week. Pickles will keep four to six weeks.
