Welcome!

MARCH 2016

I

remember the first time I was moved by a piece of art. It was 112 degrees in Florence, Italy, and I was waiting in line to see the statue of David. I was not excited, and frankly would have rather been waiting in line for gelato. I had seen what felt like hundreds of sculptures, statues, and pieces of art already that day, and they were all blending together into one big blur of colors and materials that seemed to scream “history” at me as loud as it could.

Finally I was in front of the David statue and was surprised by my response. I stood there slack-jawed, in total awe of David’s beauty, until a fellow traveler nudged me out of the way. I remember being transfixed and contemplating that feeling for the rest of the trip. I even forgot about gelato for the rest of the day. Pablo Picasso said, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” It’s been a pleasure working on my first issue of the magazine. Perhaps the stories will ignite inspiration for your own artistic endeavors, and maybe you’ll even find yourself coated in a little less dust of daily life.

RAISING FUNDS FOR THE IDAHO YOUTH RANCH ARTICLE AMY PENCE-BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE BRYANT

W

hen you think of the Idaho Youth Ranch (IYR), you probably think about their two dozen thrift stores – easy places to pick up quirky accessories for your

Halloween costume, find unusual vintage dishes for cheap, or the perfect spot to donate boxes of unnecessary household clutter. What you may not know is that the Idaho Youth Ranch has been around for more than sixty years and that their 29 amazing thrift stores are a great tool to fund an even greater mission. A statewide non-profit agency that has been helping good kids on a dangerous path find promising futures, the IYR relies on those thrift stores, as well as private donations, to fund youth programs and services throughout the state. The Idaho Youth Ranch offers emergency shelter, residential care, animal-assisted therapy and equine therapy, job readiness training, alternative education, adoption services, family counseling, and more for at-risk kids and their families. While donating our unneeded goods to our local IYR store (and also shopping at them) is a helpful way to financially support the mission and operations, there is another fun way to give back. This year, two local business women--Mary Beth Cooper of Chandlers Restaurant in Boise, and Tammy Hadfield, a nurse and owner of Embrace Wellness in Meridian--are co-chairs of a unique “fun”draiser for the Idaho Youth Ranch called Wine, Women and Shoes. Wine, Women and Shoes is the brainchild of Californian Elaine Honig of Honig Wines. She created the first fundraising event for her own winery and now helps other communities like Boise do the same. She calls herself a 'shoemmelier' (playing off the wine connoisseur term 'sommelier') and is an expert in pairing fine shoes and wine and celebratory events that also include food, shopping, and runway fashion shows. Boise’s first Wine, Women and Shoes event three years ago was a smashing success, bringing in around $15,000 and hundreds of women to Boise State University’s swanky Stueckle Center for the event. This year, you can enjoy a vintage fashion show, Idaho wines, and a “Best in Shoe” and “Best Dressed” contest. “IYR is a charity that fits with my own company’s motto ‘Embracing who you are and who you can become.’ It’s about helping youth succeed with positive support from their local community and creating bonds that make a child want to achieve his/ her potential. Their stories are touching,” says Co-Chair Tammy Hadfield. “I just love being part of IYR’s future and I am so happy to know that the money I donate is going directly to IYR. It has a rippling affect into this entire community.” Wine, Women and Shoes will be held at The Boise Centre on Friday May 20th from 6-9:30pm. Tickets go on sale March 2nd and more information can be found on the event Facebook page: Facebook.com/WineWomenShoesBoise.

Photographers Intro by Lettie Stratton Photography is art. It’s as simple as that. Each of these three top-notch photographers brings their own unique artistic expertise to the page, whether capturing people, landscapes, objects, or something else entirely. Here, Russ de Ment, Lynn Gormley, and Don Johnson tell you in their own words about their experience with the medium.

RUSS DE MENT

“My interest in photography began in the early ‘80s. Barely a teenager, I would count the number of months I’d have to save my five dollar per month allowance to buy a fancy (so I thought) Canon Snappy-S. By today’s standards it wasn’t much of a camera, and more camera than I needed at the time; however I felt it would allow me to capture the kinds of images I was interested in. I was an early adopter of the world of digital photography, starting when cameras could only produce a 320x240 pixel image. It was hardly enough detail to tell what the camera was pointed at, but wow! In 1995 I was sending images across the world via email to my family back home in Boise. Today, Treasure Valley Image is best known in the real estate community for imaging homes and commercial properties. While it is a business for me, I haven’t given up the hobby. In my personal circles I’m known for capturing images of places and things that leave viewers in awe. In the evenings, I can often be found connecting a DSLR body to a large computer guided telescope and capturing images of planets, nebulae and other wonders in the cosmos; while another camera sits on a stationary tripod capturing very wide-angle time-lapse images of the stars gliding across the night sky.”

LYNN GORMLEY

“For some reason, I prefer to photograph people rather than the gorgeous landscapes of the Teton Valley. I guess I love people. A friend asked, or rather insisted, I take her daughter’s wedding photos and I was hooked! I loved meeting all the people I photographed and making lifelong friends with people I wouldn’t have otherwise met. I love incorporating the scenery in many of my images, and recording that the world where we live really is beautiful and we are lucky to be a part of it. Aside from photographing gorgeous weddings, I love portraits, including seniors and families, but my favorites are contemporary glamour portraits. So many women experience self-loathing and even disgust with themselves, always feeling that they are not good enough. A good photographer can show a woman what the world sees when they look at her and how the people she loves looks at her; beautiful, inside and out.” 20

“I grew up steeped in cameras and darkrooms but it was a fortuitous photography workshop that opened my eyes to real opportunity. Howard Huff, the beloved Boise State College (pre-BSU) photographic arts professor, had somehow managed to attract acclaimed visionary Jerry Uelsmann to present a two-day photo montage workshop. Uelsmann's groundbreaking works were shaking the photography world, and witnessing magic emerge in the darkroom with the master himself was life-altering. I left BSC shortly thereafter and enrolled in Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. My varied career took me from a California advertising agency to business management with Morrison Knudsen, and cameras traveled with me everywhere. These days, my professional time is split between portrait and fine art work with Arrowrock Photography, large event photography and skills training with Sawtooth Photo Pros, and freelance editorial assignments. Beautiful light, uncluttered canvases, clean lines, and compelling subjects are trademark features of an Arrowrock Photography print. Blended textures and artistic elements are often added to enhance ambience while avoiding the current instant gratification trend; each piece ripens in its own time.

he mark of any good business is how it treats its customers. By the same token, if you’re being well taken care of as a customer, it usually means that the employees at the business you’re dealing with are, too. When Connell Lloyd bought Wood Windows, Inc. from its original owner four years ago, the company, a fixture in the Boise market for over 35 years, was struggling. He implemented organizational skills learned over 20 years with Albertsons and another 20 years in the dairy management business and continued to drive the heavy emphasis on customer service the former owner had built. “We like to say that we’re a serviceoriented company that sells windows on the side,” Lloyd says with a smile. When he came back to Idaho in 2005 he didn’t know anything about selling windows, but he knew the company had a good track record and a job was a job, even at half his former pay. It didn’t take long for him to figure it out. In 2006 he set a company record with over $1 million in residential sales. “I also saw a lot of inefficiencies in the company compared to where I was working before,” says Lloyd. “So when I took over, I brought my coprporate process-flow management skills to this small business. They helped the business and they helped the customers.” 26

Boise Lifestyle | March 2016

The first thing he did was was focus his sales staff on individual markets, with no crossover allowed. “There are over a thousand options on some of these windows,” says Lloyd. “Other companies let their sales people sell any job that comes along, but I took that away from them. What it did was specialize people in their respective markets so they became experts. Customer service is better and mistakes are fewer.” In his first year as the new owner the company’s profits increased. The next year, he tripled that number. But all that growth created other issues. “I kind of topped out as a sole proprietor,” Lloyd admits. “I knew I could still grow the company, but I needed some new talent.” He spent a year wooing John Stearns, an Andersen Windows rep for five northwest states who had been with that company for 12 years, and finally convinced him to come on board as a financial partner. “It wasn’t easy, and he didn’t come cheap,” says Lloyd, “but he’s been worth every dime.” Stearns promptly helped the company grow 60 percent. “Change like that can be difficult to manage,” Lloyd says. “We wanted growth, but not necessarily that much all at once. We knew it was coming, but it was like a tidal wave.” They are now the largest Andersen Window dealer in the State of Idaho, and the second largest in the Northwest.

Connell Lloyd

Their sales people and six school-trained, full-time field carpenters are regularly trained by Andersen to keep them up to speed on all of Andersen’s products. But one look around their new $50,000 showroom will tell you that’s not all they do. In addition to six other window lines, four wood and two vinyl, they also sell and install exterior Haerdi Plank cement siding for homes, Velux skylights, doors and door hardware. Lloyd is quick to credit his loyal employees for helping make all that happen. “We have a very low turnover rate,” he says proudly. “I’ve got carpenters who have been with the company 17 years, my bookkeeper has been here 20 years. We have a full service department dedicated only to service. These guys aren’t allowed to go out and put windows in, all they do is service.” Four years into the turnaround, business is good, and while they don’t expect another growth spurt of that size any time soon, Wood Windows, Inc. has definitely become a force to be reckoned with in the southwestern Idaho and eastern Oregon market.
