THINK GREEN FARM FRESH FOOD SIT. STAY. ROLL OVER. FUNDRAISING FOR A CURE
Lifestyle Letter
Spring Has Sprung I
believe the basis of green living is eating good food. And with all the fantastic local produce in the Treasure Valley, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be eating good food. One of my favorite parts of spring is getting some dirt beneath my fingernails and planting my own garden. It seems like a small miracle every time a tiny seedling pops its head above the soil and I’m continually amazed that a packet full of seeds can turn into the makings of a gourmet dinner in a relatively short period of time.
Whether you enjoy saying hi to your favorite farmer at the farmers market or prefer admiring the morning dew on your very own asparagus plant, I hope you enjoy our feature story on the Boise Co-op, whose presence is central to Boise’s local food culture. And it’s not just the Co-op that’s benefiting from local shopper’s dollars. The numerous farmers, ranchers, and producers who supply the Co-op with high quality goods benefit as well. They are the ones doing the hard work of turning seeds and soil into food.

PATIENT INTERVIEW WITH BRANDY: DENTAL IMPLANTS & CROWNS
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE DR. TAYLOR TO COMPLETE YOUR DENTAL TREATMENT? I chose Dr. Taylor to complete my treatments for many reasons, but first and foremost I trust him. I have been one of his patients for over 12 years now and he has always been extremely honest with me. He always takes his time when it comes to explanations. I have never felt like he was trying to rush. He is just so genuine and I respect him very much!
WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD YOU MAKE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING UPDATING HIS OR HER SMILE? There are so many options now when it comes to updating your smile, both in procedures and doctors. My recommendation would be get to know who you’ll be working with. I can’t imagine having gone through this process without someone I know, respect and trust.
HOW HAS THIS DENTAL TREATMENT AFFECTED YOU? These procedures have not only given me permanent front teeth, it has given me peace of mind as well. I have been dealing with temporary teeth, flippers, and bridges since I was 7 years old. This is the first time in my life I remember feeling like I have solid, natural teeth. I don’t worry about them anymore and I feel more confident.
WHAT OBSTACLES DID DR. TAYLOR AND THE STAFF OF BOISE SMILE DESIGN HELP YOU OVERCOME THAT HELPED YOU GET THIS TREATMENT DONE? We had many obstacles from finding the right temporary teeth that I could live with over the course of treatment, to keeping them in place. Everyone was always there to listen and help me through the process, both physically and emotionally.

alk down Bannock Street between 8th and 9th and a lovely new ladies boutique is sure to get your attention. Marla June's Clothing Company opened its doors in downtown Boise in November, 2015, bringing a unique and fun place to shop to the Boise area. Come into the store and it’s clear right away that something is different. Customers shopping in the family owned store enjoy an environment that makes shopping for clothes, shoes, and accessories fun. “Walk in and you'll quickly meet our friendly, experienced staff who take the time to discuss your unique style, providing a personalized shopping experience,” says Owner Marla June Barnhart. “It is our commitment to provide the type of personal service that makes a woman feel relaxed and good about herself." Marla June’s carries the very best from top fashion designers, and with a flair for fun, the store offers a variety of fashion-forward brands. You'll enjoy discovering the latest styles from Aratta, Hazel, Liverpool, Fly London, Vince Camuto, Brighton, and more. "We strive to find pieces made of high quality materials, from casual to special occasions, everyday wear to business, jeans to dresses," says Barnhart. "My goal with each and every person we serve is to provide them with personal attention and give them a great selection of unique fashion and styles to meet their needs and tastes." Prior to following her passion for fashion, Barnhart spent 15 years in sales management and advertising sales. "I had a strong desire to change careers and ultimately, after researching options, traveling to boutiques in the Pacific Northwest, and gaining the support of my wonderful husband, my dream of owning my own women's clothing store became a reality." In August 2005, the first Marla June's Clothing Company location opened in the Pendleton area. With two other locales in the Pacific Northwest, one in Kennewick, WA and the other in Pendleton, OR, Downtown Boise seemed like a natural place for a new store expansion. "Our first experience with Boise was traveling to see friends who had moved to the area,” says Barnhart. “As we explored the downtown area, we found an excitement from the businesses and people that worked there. The more we saw of Boise, the more we felt our store would fit very well into such a growing and exciting city." Aside from a great shopping experience, Marla June’s also provides a space for private parties such as “Wine, Women and Fashion - Girls Night Out” (see more information about this opportunity at MarlaJunes.com). One stop into Marla June's Clothing Company, and you will have a shopping experience that will have you coming back again and again. April 2016 | Boise Lifestyle

they can now enjoy a new Co-op location in the Village at Meridian. “As the Treasure Valley grows, we see more and more of a need for natural and organic food,” says Marketing Director Mo Valko. “The demand for these products is increasing over time, so the next logical step for us was to expand and open a second location.”

inancial advising is not as cut and dry as you might think. Peggy L. Farnworth takes a holistic approach as a trusted financial advisor, helping clients figure out not only the specifics of their financial plans, but also discussing their big picture goals. “The more people know, the more empowered they are and the more successful they can be,” Farnworth says. Farnworth’s focus is on financial education and helping people define their financial independence. “That’s one of the reasons I blog regularly,” she says (visit TrustedFinancialAdvisorBoise.com to view blog posts). Farnworth blogs about a variety of topics including downsizing homes, clearing out estates, and even the medical system. “I have gleaned a lot from my own experiences and have shared that, as well as what I’ve found in my research,” she says. “I had a bad experience in the medical system and it made me a more savvy and better consumer of medical services.” The majority of Farnworth’s clients are age 50 and up, so she often deals with retirement planning and the transition period that comes with that. “My focus is concerned with how to make your retirement rich and enjoyable,” Farnworth says, “because it’s about more than money. It’s how you’re doing socially, mentally, and emotionally.” Farnworth says many retirement-age people think they’re going to love “doing nothing,” when in reality it can be a difficult transition. “I give them information up front and help them be prepared to make that shift,” she says. Farnworth, who has been in business for 25 years, is one of only a half dozen financial advisors in the Boise area with CPA (certified public accountant) and CFP (certified financial planner) designations, not to mention her CSA (certified senior advisor) designation. “I work a lot with clients who have aging parents,” she says, “and let them know about services that are available to them that can help with the aging process.”
24
Boise Lifestyle | April 2016
Farnworth became interested in financial advising in a high school bookkeeping class her mother made her take after her older sister made a disaster of her checkbook. “I found that I really like helping people with their goal setting,” Farnworth says. “It’s more than just taxes; people need a big picture plan.” She says she loves hearing people’s stories of how they got to where they are and where they want to go next. “Getting to be a part of that is a pretty incredible experience,” she says. Enjoying a new spacious office, Farnworth is looking forward to hosting workshops on topics such as identify theft, cyber security, estate planning, and record retention. “I’m really excited to be able to do more,” she says. “I have a lot of clients who don’t just want to know what time it is--they want to know how the clock works. I try to increase their knowledge base and empower them to be more wise, savvy, and knowledgeable about their financial picture.”

S
it Means Sit Boise is not your average dog training company. Not only has it been the number one franchise in North America for the past three years, but it has also developed specialized systems that are specific to each individual dog and owner. Owner Jim Closson, who has been in business for 27 years, says the Sit Means Sit training system is based on the scientific principles of classical and operate conditioning and uses a reward-based communication system. “It encompasses marker training, body language, verbal languages, the language of the leash, and the language of our patented Sit Means Sit Smart Collar,” Closson says. The Smart Collar is signal-reward collar used to capture attention, and Closson explains that it’s radically different from other systems. “It’s not a punishment-based, high-powered shock collar,” he says. “It’s based on the science of applied animal behavior. There’s no physical punishment involved, but there’s always an outcome.” That outcome is simply whether or not a reward is received. Part of the Sit Means Sit training involves uncovering a dog’s individual motivators, from food to toys to love and affection. But it doesn’t stop there. Trainers f igure out whether dogs prefer jerky or cheese, tennis balls or frisbees, and swimming or running. “We teach owners how to f ind and rank reward value with each individual dog,” Closson says. What makes Sit Means Sit unique is that they design training programs around a dog’s unique characteristics and traits, or caninality. “It’s just like people have personalities,” Closson says. “What works for a 26

Boston Terrier isn’t going to work for a Border Collie.” The training system also takes the owner’s unique lifestyle and goals into consideration. Someone who is active and outdoors frequently will have a different program than a dog owner in assisted living, for example. “The dogs are easy,” Closson says. “85 percent of it is training the owners.” Sit Means Sit trains all types of dogs, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes and everything in between, as well as all obedience levels and ages. Closson recalls training a 16-year-old dog. “It’s never too late,” he says. Training, which is conducted by Sit Means Sit dog trainers who have gone through the renowned Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers, occurs in small group classes with between 6-10 dogs, in private oneon-one instruction, or in the popular Sit Means Sit Transformation Academy, specifically designed for people with very busy lifestyles who want to be somewhat involved in training. “We do the training
up front,” Closson says, “and then work on leadership transfer.” This helps owners learn their part of the training system and improve their relationships with their dogs while not having to do all the work. Every client also receives a free consultation before the training process begins. All you have to do is call. Closson attributes his franchise’s success to great clients. “Without great clients, you can’t grow your business,” he says. “Last year we had a 98.2 percent customer satisfaction rating.” Closson recalls one dog who saved its owner from a house fire, and another who helped turn a reclusive violent crime victim into a successful business owner. He says his favorite part of the job is watching people’s relationships with their dogs blossom. “People come in and are frustrated because they don’t know how to communicate with their puppy,” he says. “We teach them how to communicate and to see the relationship grow and strengthen. People are now enjoying activities like hiking and camping, which they couldn’t enjoy before because the dog was a pain. Trust builds, and then they tell you how much more they appreciate their dog.” Keep an eye out for Sit Means Sit dog Kohl, who is the official bat dog for the Boise Hawks. Sit Means Sit is also the official dog trainer for the Boise State Broncos, and Kohl recently made a free throw during a BSU halftime show in front of 12,000 people. Whether you want your dog to be a sports star or not, you won’t find better training than Sit Means Sit.

n 2010 a little boy named Bodhi Gavin Moore, from Emmett, Idaho, lost his five year battle with childhood leukemia. He was six years old and loved Star Wars, the Boise State University Broncos, his fort, and teasing his cat. His parents, Cahn and Meleah Moore, along with other family and friends in the Treasure Valley and with employees of Indepth Solutions, Inc., formed Team BodhiLove, to help keep this little boy’s memory alive by raising awareness and fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Idaho. In 2014, Jennifer Perez, owner of Indepth Solutions, Inc., Yvonne C. Perez and her husband Ralph Perez, wanted to do something more as loving participants of Team BodhiLove. “Ralph and I had in the past supported the BodiLove team through Indepth Solutions’ efforts, but I knew little about the LLS myself and wanted to learn more about them. It took no time at all and I was sold," Yvonne says. "The research being done to cure blood cancers is amazing and ground breaking. The research is truly cutting edge and has led to many successful treatments over the past several decades, not only for blood cancers but for many other cancers and diseases, like MS and rheumatoid arthritis.” Together, the Perezes co-founded and co-chair an annual event called Betting On a Cure, with several components to raise money for research. The highlight is A Night in Monte Carlo, which features musical entertainment by a Rat Pack Tribute band, consisting of some amazing impersonators of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin, who come to Boise all the way from Ohio. There will be a red carpet leading the way to a 1950s style casino, complete with card tables and professional dealers, a supper-club themed dinner, and cocktails. It is black-tie optional on Saturday May 21, 2016, with social hour starting at 6pm and doors opening at 7pm at the Boise Centre. 28

The Perezes didn’t stop at a one night fundraising extravaganza. With the invaluable support of their thirteen member event board, a cancer awareness symposium has been added to the Saturday event. This will be a late morning/early afternoon symposium featuring speakers and informational booths to bring awareness on current treatment options, new research, trials and patient advocacy along with promoting what the Treasure Valley has to offer for cancer care. “This will be a great opportunity and a first of its kind in the Valley,” says Ralph. “We hope to provide very important awareness to our community as a whole, including those suffering with these diseases, their families, friends, and the medical community.” To further benefit the LLS of Idaho, the Perezes co-founded the For-A-Day™ program. Local leaders doing educational and inspirational work in community and business positions are asked to volunteer a few hours of their workday to teach a young person the ins and outs of their career. The chance to be an Idaho Senator For-A-Day, a Veterinarian For-A-Day, a Firefighter For-A-Day or a Writer For-A-Day, for example, will be auctioned off between May 1 – June 30, 2016. For-A-Day is entirely a volunteer program with zero administrative costs associated with the auction, so 100 percent of all auction monies will do directly to the LLS. If you are interested in sponsorship information for the Betting on a Cure event, would like more information about the symposium, would like to purchase tickets to the event, or wish to volunteer your expertise and time as a For-A-Day leader, please contact Yvonne C. Perez at 208.761.4341.
