t’s about that time I find myself asking, “How is it September already?” Sure, we all asked it when Easter rolled around, and again when Independence Day came and went, but there’s something about the end of the summer season that makes us feel like there’s still so much we need to cram into the last few months of the year. So as the fall air begins to move in, the kids are back at school and football is back on TV, we’re excited to continue sharing with you the stories of local businesses and happenings around Boise as we enter the home stretch of 2016. Our feature story this month is a Q&A with Boise’s own Cornerstone Design -- a boutique interior design firm started in the home of President and Principal Designer Suzie Hall in 1992. Flip over to page 18 and let Suzie tell you a little more about the projects and philosophies that make her firm such an asset to our community. If, like us, you don’t want to accept the fact that Thanksgiving is just a couple months away and Christmas is right around the corner, hold onto the last few weeks of summer with our cocktail popsicle recipes -- cool mojito or grapefruit rosemary pops perfect for that last-hoorah-of-summer Labor Day picnic or unseasonably warm late-September tailgate party. Finish off this issue with a look at some end-of-summer fashions, a hot spot you’ve got to check out and a brownie recipe that shows hops don’t always have to be consumed from a pint glass. As the days get shorter, the temperatures start to cool off and school-year activities are back in full swing, we hope this issue serves as a great distraction from everything that comes along with the fall season and continues to bring the people and events that make the Boise community so special directly into your homes. Happy (almost) fall, Boise! We can’t wait to see you around town.

3-D WALL FLATS ARTICLE ANGI HOCKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
W
anting to add a WOW factor to your interior design project? These gems are definitely worth a double take. I discovered these Wall Flats at inhabitliving.com a couple years
ago and was waiting for just the right spot to install. Wall Flats are lightweight 3-D wall panels that work together with a large scale pattern repeat. They are 100% bio-degradable, molded of 100% Bagasse which is the dry pulpy residue left after the extraction of juice from sugar cane, making it one of the world’s most renewable resources. Last year, my husband and I took the plunge and hung them in both the powder room and on a recessed wall to the dining room. Now, when we have guests come to our home, it’s only a matter of minutes before they are drawn to these feature walls, examining, touching and asking all sorts of questions about the Wall Flats. They bring a bold, yet sophisticated, positive energy to any space. Wall Flats can be installed on walls as a DIY project or through a contractor, hanging them with either contact cement or a clay-based wallpaper paste. They can be trimmed and are paintable, which opens the door for more creativity. They look stunning, encompassing an entire room or making only one wall an architectural masterpiece. 3-D Wall Flats also make great statement pieces for such places as a fireplace, ceiling, built-ins, pillars, framed in as a wall art piece, and even to hide damaged drywall. Inhabitliving.com offers eleven different styles of Wall Flats, starting at $2.66 per square foot. Visit their website for more ideas and installation instructions. So, whether your style is modern, mid-century, contemporary, retro or architec-
tural, you can’t go wrong with this next generation wall art. As a precautionary statement, once the install is complete, these beauties will steal the show!

Schnitzel Garten:
Valley’s only authentic German restaurant ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KEN LEVY
Y
ou won’t find many German restaurants in Idaho with a Google search. But at the top of the list, you’ll find Eagle’s Schnitzel Garten, which serves up authentic—and memorable—German recipes. It’s the first and only authentic German restaurant in the Treasure Valley. Partners Courtland Hugues and Elena Filenova—and half of their staff—are native Germans who offer the best of their native home cooking. There are no shortcuts to bringing that cooking to the table, from buying local whenever possible to following time-treasured recipes, to mom and daughter Georgine and Stephanie Jeffries serving your dishes in traditional Bavarian dresses known as dirndl. “You have to grow up with this food,” Hugues said. “The key to success is that people have an affinity for this food and, for them, this is paradise.” Paradise comes in many forms, such as the Jager Schnitzel, comprised of a large, 14

thin veal cutlet, gently breaded and fried and topped with a subtle yet flavorful sauce featuring fresh mushrooms. It’s served with Gurkensalat, or cucumber salad, prepared in a sour cream and dill sauce. Schnitzel also comes in chicken and pork. More favorites include sauerbraten, rouladen (braised beef rolls with bacon, onion and pickle), leberkase (similar to a baloney sausage) and variations on goulash. Try bratwurst with sauerkraut and German mashed potatoes. All of Schnitzel Garten’s wursts and sausages are made in-house. Other German specialties include seasonal dishes, and there’s plenty of partying at Oktoberfest, with specialty beers, live music and authentic food served on the dates that coincide with the festival in Munich. Their Oktoberfest chicken is a rooster served with sides such as warm potato salad or fries with curry ketchup. Hugues said the after-club crowds often stop for currywurst and fries, among other “typical German street food.”
Schnitzel Garten also offers a wide selection of beer and wine. You’ll find Andech’s beer here, “a well-rounded, subtle, unique” brew that’s been around for about 500 years, Hugues said. The Benedictine monks of St. Boniface in Munich and Andechs brew the beer. Hugues said he had “a little hole-in-thewall restaurant” in his native Germany. When he moved here he discovered there was no German restaurant in the Treasure Valley, and decided with Elena to make Schnitzel Garten happen. “There are so many Germans in the valley, you have no idea. I thought it would be good for the community, good for the Germans, good for business to have a German restaurant here,” he said. “I love this building and the beer garden,” he said. “The restaurant here is more of a destination, and they all come here, and they all come back. I have a great responsibility: I make people happy.”

boutique, professional interior design firm specializing in high-end, residential, commercial and hospitality projects, Boise's Cornerstone Design was started in 1992 in the home of President and Principal Designer Suzie Hall with "little more than a business degree, a vision and a passion for design," she says. Following Suzie's attainment of her professional NCIDQ certification for interior design in 1998, the firm moved into a commercial space and started adding staff in 2000, and later moved into its current LEED-CI Gold certified interior design studio (designed by Cornerstone Design) in 2007. CORNERSTONE DESIGN WORKS ON/HAS WORKED ON AND WHAT
DESIGN FIRMS IN THE REGION?
IMPACT DO THOSE PROJECTS HAVE ON THE BOISE COMMUNITY?
1. Our sophistication. Our highly experienced team designs at a sophistication level commensurate with firms in larger markets. We don’t hold ourselves back to the local market. Our designs transcend the aesthetic that you’ll see in a lot of homes in this area. We’re always pushing the envelope with new materials, designs and applications. We also work in a similar fashion to architects, in that we can provide full Autocad drawings and 3D renderings, along with sophisticated lighting designs and home automation integration. 2. Our energy, drive and intuition. We bring focused energy and passion to every project we undertake, creating a dynamic partnership with our clients, contractors
Several high profile private residences - new construction and renovation projects. We worked on an extensive project on the old Paul Revere estate in Boise. We designed two Tamarack parade home and several other projects on Payette Lake and in the McCall area. My private residence, completed in 2006, is an award-winning custom home in Bown Crossing. We also designed the Banner Bank building, the interior renovation of Boise City Hall, Hawley Troxell law firm, and PINZ Bowling Center in Meridian, which we received a national award for. We recently installed a large, custom glass and light sculpture in the lobby of the US Bank building that is now the capstone of the lobby. Stop in and take a look!

and consultants on every project. We see our projects through to completion to ensure a satisfied client. Our clients often comment that we are "inside their mind" a lot during the design process, as we often leverage our creative intuition to create our magic. 3. Our full-spectrum of design services. We provide design consultation, project management, and furniture procurement services in an integrated fashion. Our professional and organized approach always impresses our clients. I believe that the best projects are those where we are involved every step of the way, including the space planning phase.

the way, including the space planning phase. -Suzie Hall WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR DESIGN ASPECTS YOUR CLIENTS ARE LOOKING FOR IN A PROJECT?
Wood floors that are unique and durable. Lighter and cleaner interiors, sometimes with contrasting dark finishes for drama. Dramatic fireplaces. Functional and creative lighting solutions. Carefully designed custom furniture and beautiful window treatments. WE SAW ON YOUR WEBSITE THAT AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR FIRM IS A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PRACTICES. HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT THIS INTO YOUR PROJECTS AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Sustainable design used to be an add-on to our practice and now it’s interwoven in every project we undertake. Our standard selections include no/low VOC paints, coatings and adhesives. VOC’s can be present in almost every surface in a home, so it’s important to specify healthy materials. We try to engage local craftspeople on as many projects as possible, and look for recycled content where possible. Energy Star appliances and lighting are important, too. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PROCESS OF A GENERAL PROJECT. WHAT IS A GENERAL TIMELINE AND THE MAIN COMPONENTS EVERY PROJECT GOES THROUGH (I.E. ALL OF THE TYPES OF DESIGNS INCLUDED AND SERVICES INCLUDED/NEEDED)?
Depending on the type of project, the time frame for the design process can take anywhere from 2 months – 1 year or more before construction begins. Every project usually includes schematic design, design CONTINUED >

development, construction documents and construction administration phases, which is where we check to make sure the project is being built according to our design specifications. YOUR WEBSITE INCLUDES AN EXTENSIVE LIST OF AWARDS YOUR FIRM HAS RECEIVED. WHAT AWARDS HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST/MOST REWARDING TO YOU, AND HOW DOES THAT RECOGNITION IMPACT YOUR PROCESS/BUSINESS VENTURES, IF AT ALL?
We’ve been fortunate to receive many awards for our work through the years. The most significant award to me is the ASID Best Residential Project in 2008 for my personal home. I designed the floor plan, elevations, lighting, along with the entire interior finishes and furniture package. To receive this award from a jury of professional interior designers from another ASID chapter was very meaningful. I believe that my home is still very unique and relevant today, more than 10 years later. We also received a national award for our PINZ project, which was great because it was our first large entertainment facility and we really pushed the envelope with color and textures. WHAT WAYS DOES CORNERSTONE DESIGN CONNECT WITH THE BOISE COMMUNITY? DO YOU HAVE ANY EVENTS THAT YOU HOST, CHARITIES YOU’RE INVOLVED WITH OR ANY ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
As President and Owner, I feel that it’s very important to be involved in the community and to give back. I currently serve on the Board of the St. Alphonsus Foundation and the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce Small Business Advisory Council. I’m also the current President of the Idaho Chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO), a global organization for high-achieving entrepreneurs. Our firm supports the WCA with financial support and pro bono design work. We designed a Make a Wish room makeover for a teenager in Mountain Home who was diagnosed with leukemia. Our design team is involved in local design organizations and community events through those. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE OUR READERS TO KNOW THAT WE HAVEN’T TOUCHED ON?
I believe that good design transforms the way that we live and work. It is one of the best investments that you can make. A great designer is one who has the experience, education, portfolio and references to stand behind. Entrust your project to a professional with the right resume. He or she should show you things you haven't seen before, and get you excited about them. Our firm will celebrate 25 years in business in February, and I like to think that this is the result of a lot of great clients and projects, creative work and fantastic relationships! n 2006, Elon Musk published a blog post outlining his long-term vision for Tesla. At the time, Tesla was still two years away from delivering the first Roadster, the company’s first product. The strategy of Tesla is to enter at the high end of the market, where customers are prepared to pay a premium,” Musk said. “Then, we’ll drive down market as fast as possible to higher unit volume and lower prices with each successive model. (pullquote) The base-level Tesla Model 3 will come standard with a rear-mounted single motor capable of launching the car from a standstill to 60 miles per hour in about six seconds. A high-performance dual-motor AWD configuration will also be offered, though Tesla has offered little in the way of performance stats for the car. Journalists who were offered the opportunity to ride in the car reported a high-performance feel that would be familiar to anyone who has been in a Tesla. Tesla announced the driving range in the Model 3 to be “at least 215 miles.” Achieving a 215-mile range will require a pack, most likely, of about 50 kilowatt-hours. Some analysts believe that Tesla is already approaching a cost of $200 per kWh, which would put the Model 3’s pack at around $10,000. Tesla’s long-term goal is to use mass production at its Nevadabased factory to bring the cost well below this level. A 240-volt Tesla home charging station costs $750, not including installation. We expect the Model 3 to use an on-board 10 kW charger, like its sibling vehicles. This means owners can add 30 or more miles of range for every hour of charging at home. With its sizable battery pack providing more than 200 miles of driving range—and the average commuter traveling about 40 miles per day—most drivers will find they have plenty of energy reserves on a daily basis. In terms of longer distance highway trips, Tesla offers its current vehicle owners free access to around 400 Supercharger sites in the United States. These high-speed fast-chargers are capable of bringing a Model S battery pack to 80 percent of capacity in about 40 minutes. This opens up new possibilities for interstate travel for many EV drivers. The Model 3 is slated to begin production in late 2017, but chances are you’ll be in for a much longer wait if you didn’t put down a $1,000 refundable deposit in the first hour after Tesla began accepting pre-orders. In just two weeks, Tesla registered more than 300,000 pre-orders—a level of interest that is truly unprecedented for a car that nobody has driven yet and barely seen. Elon Musk’s stated goal is 500,000 deliveries by 2020, though many analysts doubt this projection in light of how long it has taken to for Tesla to reach peak production capacity in the past—as well as the company’s dependency on reaching full production at its battery factory. DON’T JUST RE-PAINT, If it’s time to repaint the exterior of your home and you are looking for high quality workmanship, products and the longest warranty offered in the valley, give us a call.
Roe Painting is the the only company that we will ever use or recommend as long as we live in the Boise area. Besides having an on time, professional, polite, respectful painting crew in our home, they worked with our budget and our schedule, and we received a 5 star beautifully finished paint job and 5 star professional service. We had them paint the exterior as well! Thanks Roe Painting! - Caroline
