daho in the summertime is sublime. The fresh mountain air calls, luring us to the hills to enjoy the summer sunshine. The Idaho Shakespeare Festival on Warm Springs Avenue swings into full gear welcoming friends and neighbors to view Shakespeare under the majestic stars. The Boise River fills with fishermen trying to catch the next big fish as families float by on the current. Neighbors smile and wave as they mow their yards.

The fragrance of the freshly mowed grass takes me back to my childhood summers of splashing in the river and scrounging through the couch cushions searching for loose change so my brothers and I could ride our bikes to town to get a cool, refreshing soda, or as we used to call it “pop.” Though much time has passed since I was that little girl peddling as fast as I could to keep up with my big brothers all summer long, the beautiful landscape of Idaho changes very little.

ALEX'S LEMONADE DAYS RETURNS Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, invites volunteers across the country to take a stand against childhood cancer when Alex’s Lemonade Days returns, June 12-14. ALSF’s National Lemonade Days began in 2004 when Alex Scott set her sights on raising $1 million to fight childhood cancer, including hers. Alex invited volunteers to join her in hosting lemonade stands to help achieve her goal one dollar and one lemonade stand at a time. Through the help of these volunteers, Alex reached her goal before losing her life to cancer in August of that year. Each June, the weekend before Father’s Day, supporters everywhere contribute to a cure. The Foundation was built upon the principle that you are never too young to make a difference in the lives of others. For more information and to sign up to host a lemonade stand, visit: AlexsLemonade.org/LemonadeDays.

Finally his fingers find their mark and he continues his victorious climb up the rock face to the top. As Moore faces his fears on the side of a giant boulder, Mark Yearsley a slightly more experienced climber, faces his own difficulties. Yearsley, a 10-year Air Force veteran, climbs using a prosthesis not intended for climbing. Though the climb is difficult, Yearsley does not let his amputated leg stop him from achieving his goal of reaching the pinnacle. Moore and Yearsley are two of several veterans, both men and women, who participated last year in Warriors Rock— an annual free climbing event held for veterans each year at Castle Rock State Park near the City of Rocks National Park in Almo, Idaho. Sawtooth Mountain Guides, an experienced team of certified guides, assists with the event. Warriors Rock, founded by Diana Lincoln-Haye and Stan Haye, gives veterans and their families the opportunity to enjoy nature, bond with other veterans and accomplish achievements they may not have thought possible prior to attending. The Hayes took up rock and ice climbing later in life and discovered that there is much more to climbing than meets the eye. “The reason I wanted to offer this event to veterans is because of my experience with PTSD [They lost a daughter suddenly 8 years ago] ,” explains Lincoln-Haye. “I knew how valuable it was for my own health. I thought it would be good to offer to veterans and their families as well.” The comradery felt among the veterans and their families is palpable as they cheer each other to greater heights and achievements. “The group is like an embrace” explains Moore, a former Marine. “I took my son-in-law Hector Coronado, an immigrant from Mexico, and Lance Simmons, a young man diagnosed with Asperger’s who has had

major struggles in his life.” Both young men were welcomed with open arms by the group. Moore has noticed a particular change in Simmons since climbing Warriors Rock. “For Lance this experience was a freeing, paradigm shifting, informative and empowering sensory experience that challenged him both physically and mentally," Moore explains. "He was really impressed with Mark Yearsley and saw that other people with physical and mental challenges and heartbreak are facing that reality and doing something. Since Warriors Rock, he’s moved out of subsidized housing. He enrolled in school. He smiles. He engages people. It was a life changing experience.” After reflection, Moore realized that climbing is a metaphor for the trials in life. He realized that you have to do more than just survive in life, you need to really live. Mark Yearsley, an inspiration to the group, has suffered through his own trials. He sustained severe injuries to his right leg, shoulders and back during military service. “After 22 unsuccessful surgeries trying to reconstruct my right leg and being in a wheel chair for several years feeding on a diet of 500 mg of morphine a day due to pain, the doctor and I thought it would be best to amputate my right leg above the knee,” Yearsley says. Two years of depression followed. Then something special happened. “I was introduced back into the outdoors through a veterans’ organization,” notes Yearsley. “Once introduced, I started taking other disabled veterans on hunting and fishing trips showing them they too can do whatever they set their mind to.” Yearsley does more outdoors now than he did prior to becoming an amputee. Yearsley inspires others to achieve their goals through his own example. “One thing I love to hear from vets is, ‘If you can do it with one leg then surely I can do it with two,’” says Yearsley. He is in the process of starting his own non-profit organization called Outdoor Salute to Veterans. “I will also coordinate with Warriors Rock to get more veterans off their couches and into the outdoors.” Yearsley recognizes the significance of participating in Warriors Rock. “Warriors Rock is an opportunity to get out of the house, reach for the stars, and feel a sense of achievement and freedom,” says Yearsley. “Climbing builds confidence, courage, concentration, stamina, discipline and gives you a sense of accomplishment. The first step is to get out and at least try and set reasonable achievable goals.”

VitaNovu: New Life FIND THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH WITH JENIFER L. BARRY, MD

ARTICLE PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON | PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE BRYANT, BOISE PRO PHOTO

W

e know we can’t stay young forever, but a Boise doctor can help you look and feel younger at an anti-aging practice called VitaNovu, meaning “New Life.” Trained by world renowned experts in procedures such as cosmetic lasers, botox, fillers and skin rejuvenation, Jenifer L. Barry, MD has extensive experience in treating a variety of cosmetic conditions. As a skilled anti-aging physician she recognizes and effectively treats these conditions using an inside out approach. “Many patients seek cosmetic correction for their physical concerns without understanding that there are internal imbalances that are at the root of the problem,” explains Barry owner and medical director of VitaNovu. “Common complaints such as acne, rosacea, cellulite, or facial hair growth in women can stem from hormone and/or nutritional imbalances that will never be fully treated through the use of cosmetic procedures alone.” VitaNovu differentiates itself from other medical spas and skin care centers by offering patients a comprehensive approach under the care of a specialty trained physician who is treating the whole patient, rather than simply selling cosmetic procedures that only offer temporary improvements in appearance. Anti-Aging Medicine, also known as Functional Medicine, does not merely prevent or reverse the physical appearance of aging, as the name might imply. Rather, it is a fundamental approach used to optimize the health and function of the human body by addressing the factors that can accelerate the aging process, such as nutritional deficiencies and environmental exposures. These are some of the same factors that lead to common symptoms and diseases that are most prevalent in the world today. Deviating from the conventional medicine model, “a pill for every ill,” Barry does not simply prescribe pharmaceuticals, which she argues only serve to mask symptoms and create harmful side effects and long-term complications. Her primary focus is getting to the root cause of disease and addressing the patient as a whole person, with unique needs, not just a symptom or a diagnosis that is treated the same way in every patient. Advanced metabolic testing, typically not found in a conventional medicine practice, is utilized to determine where imbalances lie, allowing her to formulate a highly personalized and scientifically validated treatment plan for each individual patient. A comprehensive anti-aging treatment strategy typically focuses on six fundamental components: 1. Stress Reduction 2. Nutrition & Gut Health 3. Exercise 4. Sleep 5. Hormone Balance 6. Detoxification. “VitaNovu’s mission is to restore balance to the body and educate and empower our patients to live long, confident and healthy lives,” states Barry. At VitaNovu, the emphasis is not only on restoration of a youthful appearance, but on optimal health and total wellness. Boise native, Jenifer L. Barry, MD, majored in biology at Boise State University and earned her medical degree from the University of Washington in 2007. She has been practicing hospital based medicine since 2010 and is board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Two years ago, Dr. Barry entered fellowship training with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine to earn board certification in both Anti-Aging Medicine as well as Aesthetic Medicine. Last year she opened VitaNovu, a progressive VitaNovu anti-aging and aesthetic medical prac1525 S Owyhee St. tice that is passionate about restoring Boise health and revitalizing youth for 208.344.8482 all of its patients. Entertaining in the Great Outdoors DRESS UP YOUR BACKYARD WITH AN OUTDOOR KITCHEN

ARTICLE SARA WESTBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE BRYANT, BOISE PRO PHOTO AND PROVIDED

S

ummer— a time for playing baseball in the back yard, enjoying long summer evenings and inviting family and friends to a backyard cookout. Guests relax as they wait for their meal. Mouths water as tantalizing scents waft from the grill. Meanwhile the harried host runs in and out of the house grabbing hamburger fixings, utensils and other odds and ends while trying to get dinner ready. When the party's over, the host has to lug everything back into the house. An outdoor kitchen allows the host to slow down, enjoy the party and socialize without having to run to the house for forgotten ingredients. The folks at Franz Witte are experts on landscape design. They understand the desire to spend time with friends and family as a meal is prepared. Seneca Hull, the president of Franz Witte knows from personal experience just how nice having an outdoor kitchen can be. “I think with the outdoor kitchens the trend has gone from a great landscape that you can look at to something that you can use and it’s comfortable,” Hull says. “It can be whatever you want it to be. I have an outdoor living area at my house. I have people who have been coming over to my yard for years who have never actually been in my house.” Kent Brandtjen, a senior project manager and designer for Franz Witte sees some major benefits of having an outdoor kitchen. “One of the biggest things is that cooking has now become a social thing to do,” Brandtjen explains. “People enjoy congregating during the preparation. The outdoor kitchen adds to that whole sociability of cooking and prepping.”

18

Boise Lifestyle | June 2015

OUTDOOR KITCHEN DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

“When you’re designing a kitchen you have to think a lot about the environment it is going in.” explains Brandtjen. “There’s a lot involved in it. Exposure, the direction the wind is going to carry the smoke, shade, sun. All those elements come into play. In Oregon (where Brandtjen used to live), people don’t want to stand in the rain, so you have to provide a cover. Here in the Treasure Valley people don’t want to stand in the hot sun, so you have to provide shade. The best kitchens are the ones that are well planned.” Maggie Clark, a design and project manager for Franz Witte, emphasizes that adding an outdoor kitchen is a win/win situation. “It’s an investment, so you want it to be well-designed and well thought out,” says Clark. “It’s funny because sometimes you can talk clients into going the outdoor kitchen route, while other clients know right off the bat that they want an outdoor living space. To them an outdoor kitchen is a necessity.” An outdoor kitchen adds square footage to your home. “Your able to utilize more of your property and really diversify your recreation possibilities,” explains Clark. “You also can customize the style because there are so many different surfaces available for the top and side facades. You could make it an art piece with some really funky sides or you can be really traditional.”

EXTENSION OR DESTINATION

An outdoor living space can be an extension of a family room or it can serve as a destination area farther away from the house. “Generally when it’s a destination kitchen there are usually more elements involved,” says Brandtjen. “More drawers are added. There’s always a refrigerator and there’s usually a sink.” “If it’s up close near the house you might go more formal,” adds Clark, “whereas if it is away from the house you could make it more organic in the seating, the furniture and the other materials used for the rest of the structure.” The convenience of an outdoor kitchen allows the host to relish the event instead of running back and forth wishing they could be more involved in the party.

Become the MacGyver of Self-Esteem

Lina Kurian, Life Coach

SELF-ESTEEM TOOLS HELP BALANCE CONFIDENCE ARTICLE LINA KURIAN | PHOTOGRAPHY CY GILBERT

S

elf esteem is a powerful tool that can influence the world around us, creating the life we desire. We should properly nurture and cultivate it. We use our self esteem as a framework to create boundaries and to set a certain standard in society. It is our foundation for inner peace, balance and growth. If self esteem is too high, we are considered arrogant and rude. With low self esteem, we lack confidence necessary to be taken seriously. Using my training as a life coach, I’ve assembled key tips to help you become the MacGyver of Self Esteem.

GET TO KNOW YOURSELF

You can’t truly own who you are and rock your self esteem with confidence if you’re not really familiar with yourself. Take time by yourself to meditate discovering who you truly are. Think about and investigate your strengths, weaknesses, goals and values. Once you understand your values and goals, work to align your life and actions with your true desires, and you will quickly develop a strong sense of acknowledgement bringing confidence.

and desires and you’ll be able to take their comments in stride. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

You have a purpose. You have a particular strength and talent that you were meant to share with others. Don’t feel like your talent is less-than because someone else is doing something similar. They aren’t doing the exact thing you are. You bring something special to the table. You should feel good about your talents and purpose and what you have to offer. DO THINGS WHOLEHEARTEDLY

After evaluating your goals and desires, set your mind to something and do it with your whole heart. Don’t quit when it gets tough because of competition or criticism. Just put in your best work. Once you’ve done that, it’s out of your hands. You’ve officially done all you can, and even if it doesn’t work the way you wanted, you know that you gave it everything you had.

STRIVE FOR OPTIMISM

We want to be realistic in life and think of possible bad outcomes, but not all the time. You don’t want to spend your life worrying about what if's. That time can be much better spent on positive activities. Instead of thinking about the billion things that could go wrong, focus that energy on how you can put your best foot forward creating a positive outcome. You will become more confident and less likely to fail. LEARN TO FILTER

You will hear criticism from every angle, no matter what you’re doing. Your mom, your neighbor, random folks on Facebook and even your mailman are all likely to have opinions. You are responsible for filtering those opinions to make sure you’re using the useful information and disregarding the rest. Don’t take criticism personally, and make sure you keep doing things that align with your goals 20

Boise Lifestyle | June 2015

EXPRESS YOURSELF FEARLESSLY

When you have a strong opinion about something, speak up. Even when you’re nervous about what people will think, the simple act of expressing your opinions will raise your self esteem. It will get easier every time that you do it. You should also express yourself through your actions. Don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk. This will earn you the respect of others, which will help you to respect yourself. Overall, you’re the only person living your life. No one is going to do it for you. With some discipline, a pinch of self-discovery, some focused action and a sense of purpose, you’ll be well on your way to becoming the MacGyver of Self Esteem! TARZAN TOUR OF TAMARACK

Soar through the sky and scan the panoramic views from hundreds of feet in the air on Tamarack’s Zipline tour. A unique way to see the mountain, the ziplines are designed to ensure everyone is safe and has a great time. Guides help guests throughout the tour. The Premier Tour includes six different lines, departs at 8:30 a.m., and lasts about 4 hours. The first two lines are easy to help you get acclimated, get over any initial fears, and learn how to steer yourself. Anyone can do it, but there is some hiking involved so good closed-toed shoes are essential and hiking boots are recommended. One hike between two of the lines takes about 15 minutes. The longest line is almost 900 feet. Wear layered clothing because you change elevation of about 1,700 feet during the tour and it can be chilly at 8:30 a.m. on the top of the mountain. At home base you are fitted with a helmet and harness. No prior experience is needed, but you must weigh between 80 and 275 pounds. If you weigh less than 80 pounds you may have trouble making it to the top of the next line. The tree house in the top of a huge ponderosa pine is a tour highlight and provides a spectacular view. GOLF, OF COURSE

Forgot your clubs? Rent a set and practice your swing at one of the valley’s best kept secrets. The uncrowded serenity and peaceful beauty of the public golf course at Jug Mountain Ranch soothes your spirit from the first tee with its spectacular views. Terrain ranging from dry desert sage to wetland/lake habitats, wide open meadows and enclosed tree covered forests challenges golf enthusiasts. The golfer who spends time on the links at Jug Mountain Ranch is treated to a site with natural beauty, coupled with quality design. After 18 holes, relax on the patio or in the clubhouse and enjoy the view while dining on delicious homemade dishes and desserts. A great bargain awaits with green fees on the weekend of $60 for 18 holes. BIKE THE MOUNTAIN

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing ride in a gorgeous setting, or an adrenaline rush at high altitude, you can find it mountain biking on Brundage Mountain. Their high-speed chairlift whisks you to the 7,640-foot summit, and the rest is up to you. With more than 20 miles of hand-built single-track downhill trails, there’s a route to fit every experience level. Beginners can work out the kinks on the scenic Elk Trail, which gently winds its way down through scenic forests and meadows. Extreme thrill-seekers can test their mettle on Zorro, a technical route that takes full advantage of gravity’s pull. With access to hundreds of acres of Payette National Forest and a

vertical drop of 1,640 feet, mountain biking at Brundage is sure to satisfy your sense of adventure. Bike rentals, including helmets, are available. Schedule a private mountain bike party any Wednesday or Thursday during the summer. GET HOOKED ON WILDLIFE

McCall is at the southern tip of Payette Lake, a mitten-shaped sixmile long crystal jewel surrounded by 7,000-foot peaks. While fishing for trout or salmon, keep an eye out for bald eagles, osprey, moose, beaver and a rare Long Valley resident–the great grey owl. Search for Sharlie, Payette Lake’s “Loch Ness” monster, first sighted in 1920. CONTINUED >

MCCALL (CONTINUED) BE A TIME TRAVELER

A hundred years ago, Roseberry was the largest town in Long Valley, complete with a hotel, two blacksmith shops, a restaurant, butcher shop, and a logging mill. But in 1914, when the railroad bypassed the town less than two miles to the west, Roseberry became a semi-ghost town. Sturdy restored structures that remain include a schoolhouse, general store, barn and carriage house. Private tours of the historic Roseberry town site, established by Finnish homesteaders, are available by appointment. GO TO THE HILLS FOR THE SOUND OF MUSIC SURROUNDED BY SCENIC BEAUTY On July 16, 17, and 18, the Summer Music Festival at Roseberry produced by The McCall Folklore Society features top musicians including Finnders and Youngberg, Yarn, Matt Flinner Trio and Dead Winter Carpenters. Innocent Man opens the last night of the show on July 18th. Kristin Burns (fiddle), Dan Burns (lead guitar) and Scott Sprague (lead vocals/guitar) all grew up in the McCall area and graduated from McCall-Donnelly High School, so there is a deep connection between the band and Valley County. Innocent Man will also be at Broken Horn Brewery in McCall on Friday, July 31. FEAST ON FARM FRESH PRODUCE

Find your favorite local fruits, vegetables and other goodies at the McCall Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 10 through October 15. Socialize with residents and growers while shopping for the best from Long Valley farmers. THE SCENIC PADDLE

Meander the waterways of the wild scenic Payette River by canoe or kayak. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy on the white sand beaches of the gentle tributary. The Upper North Fork is a designated "no wake zone" that features wildlife and a wilderness experience. Besides canoe and kayak rentals, Backwoods Adventures also offers guided tours with naturalists, kayak lessons and a kids "learn to kayak" program. Don't travel far for fun and adventure this summer. McCall is calling.

Driver’s Notebook

Audi Q5 Diesel has Fuel Economy and Performance ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

C

lean diesel power appeals to drivers on two levels: performance and fuel economy. Audi’s midsize utility vehicle, the Q5, is available with five powertrains, ranging from a 2.0-liter turbo to the supercharged V-6 in the sporty SQ5, but the one that catches my eye is the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6. Sure, the 354 horsepower in the SQ5 has addictive acceleration, yet the TDI clean diesel engine delivers more torque than any engine in the lineup. Torque is the force that pushes you back when you mash the throttle, and the diesel steps away from a stop with a satisfying lunge. The TDI scoots to 60 miles per hour only 1.4 seconds slower than the hot SQ5, but its value is the fact that it has a highway mileage rating of 31 miles per gallon versus 24 for the SQ5. I submit that most of us would trade mileage for a fractionally slower acceleration. Diesels used to be loud and smelly, but the current crop of clean diesels is neither. In fact, if you didn’t know this was a diesel you couldn’t tell by listening. The Q5 TDI has a base price of $47,000. That’s at least $4,000 less than the SQ5. The Q5 is an ideal size if you don’t need three-row seating. It slips through urban traffic as easily as a midsize sedan, yet you sit higher and have a better view of the road. The diesel is backed by an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that can be shifted manually with steering-wheel paddles. A quick burst of power only takes a flip of the paddle shifter. After a few seconds, the transmission reverts to automatic mode. Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system divides power from side to side and front to back as conditions require. That means the wheels with the most grip get the most power. That’s handy on slippery surfaces, of course, but also on dry pavement when driving briskly. The test car’s 20-inch wheels and summer tires would not do well in ice and snow, so winter tires are probably in order. In spite of its taller ride height, the TDI handles more like 26

Boise Lifestyle | June 2015

a sedan than a utility vehicle. The ride is firm, and the brakes are strong and powerful. The blind-spot warning system has yellow lights in the side of the outside mirrors. The Q5’s interior is well designed and executed. The combination of brushed aluminum, soft-touch surfaces and optional piano black trim is inviting. The sculpted front sport seats were supportive and comfortable. Wind and road noise was not intrusive at highway speeds, and the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system with 14 speakers has excellent sound. PRICE The base price of the test car was $47,000. Options

included the prestige package of blind-spot warning system, Bang & Olufsen sound system, navigation, rear view camera and Audi connect. The exclusive package includes Nappa leather and piano black inlays. Sport front seats, 20-inch wheels and summer tires round out the pricing. The sticker price was $62,025. WARRANTY Four years or 50,000 miles. The first scheduled

maintenance, at 5,000 miles or 12 months, is free. 2015 AUDI Q5 TDI

Engine: 3.0-liter, 240-horsepower turbo-diesel V-6 Transmission: Eight-speed Tiptronic automatic, allwheel drive Wheelbase: 110.5 inches Curb weight: 4,475 pounds Base price: $47,000 As driven: $62,025 MPG rating: 24 in the city, 31 on the highway

Parting Thoughts

ADVENTURE is a Nine-Letter Word WORDS ANNE POTTER RUSS

T

he word "adventure" conjures up different images for different people, and let's face it; some images are just prettier than others. For my hard-core outdoorsy friends, adventure means tackling the Appalachian Trail with three pounds of dried beans, a tarp the size of a Kleenex and a compass. Just to fluff things up a bit, they might take a change of socks. My middle-of-the-road friends have spent more money on camping gear than it will cost to put their children through college. Tent poles bent? Off to "campingstorethesizeofCleveland" to get the best nylon and titanium tent-holder-upper. Oh, and don't forget some light-weight skillets in which to make the omelets and biscuits and gravy for breakfast on the portable stove, because the wood-burning fire is too much trouble, and it's hard to find sticks, anyway. My powder puff family is in a whole different league. I came by my traveling/survival skills honestly. Some people say that their idea of "roughing it" is going to a Holiday Inn. Well, my parents' idea of roughing it was when the Ritz in Pasadena couldn't serve a third order of toast through room service because the kitchen had finally closed and it was afternoon. My dad loved to travel and my mom put up with it. And, if it involved a fun group of friends, he was game for almost anything. So, one time... and one time only... he tried camping. It was near beautiful Grand Lake in Colorado, and this group of people meant business; they wanted to be out in the beautiful night under the stars. So, my dad brought lobster to cook over the open fire. He also managed to un-

hook and remove the seats from someone else's circa 1968 Suburban so he and my mother didn't have to sit all the way down on the ground. My own level of adventure falls somewhere comfortably between crème anglaise and hiking in the mountains of New Mexico. I have parameters, though. The temperature must be between 50 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit, there should be a chef at my destination - no farther than 37 minutes from where I started; and there must always be plumbing and consumable alcohol within an arm's reach. I need bug spray, sunscreen, shampoo, magazines, candles, iPods, Izods, dish soap, doggie bags, folding chairs, floaty things, ceiling fans and bungee cords, swimsuits, flip flops, blankets, guacamole and beer, aspirin, band-aids, spatulas and skewers, and a solar power supply for my crackberry. And, that's just to get me 45 miles out of the city. I'll take an extra order of toast, too. Please and thank you.

Experience Local Dining brought to you by

A Taste of Idaho:

The Kneadery and the Pioneer Saloon Are you considering a trip to Sun Valley? If so, plan on stopping at The Kneadery known for the biggest and best breakfast in town. Try the Eggs Blackstone a special favorite with the locals. The dish is served with poached eggs, a grilled, seasoned tomato on an English muffin, topped with chopped bacon and homemade Hollandaise sauce. Finish off the meal with a fresh squeezed Mimosa or their top selling beverage, locally roasted coffee from Hailey Coffee Company, to get your morning started right. Alyson Witmer, one of the owners of the Kneadery and Pioneer Saloon, knows what sets her restaurant apart from other restaurants in the area. “We are one of the only restaurants in town offering full table service for breakfast and lunch,”

Witmer explains. “Our employees have been here as long as most of the locals and they know many of our customers by name.” No visit would be complete without a few nights at the Pioneer Saloon. A Ketchum landmark, the Pioneer Saloon is a local favorite. Witmer recommends the top quality steaks and prime rib served with the largest Idaho baked potatoes in the country. “Everyone has a favorite memory of good times at the Pioneer,” Witmer shares. “The Pioneer Saloon has been around since the 1950’s. Generations of families and friends have been gathering for great food and a great atmosphere for decades.”
