Editor’s Letter

The golden days of autumn.

A

utumn is, hands down, my favorite time of the year. It always has been. As a child I loved the fall season because it brought a few of my favorite things, like my birthday and the start of a new school year and new school supplies. I was one of those kids who got more excited about the new pencils and notebooks than the school clothes or the thought of seeing my friends again. As an adult I find this time of the year is still full of some of my favorite things, though they, like me, have evolved. Both of my children were born in October, making it special in a whole new way, and as an artistic person and a manic gardener, I find inspiration in the changing of the seasons, whether it be the color of the leaves, the transformation of the light or the change in temperature. For me, it’s all a bit magical. Another thing I’ve come to appreciate about the fall is the harvest season. Whether we're talking pumpkins, wheat or wine grapes, the harvest process can be fascinating. I have been lucky enough to be able to write about food, gardening and wine for a number of years and during that time I have come to learn a bit about the process of wine making. I am by no means an expert, and there is always more to learn, but I have enjoyed mixing and mingling with some wonderful Idaho wine makers who have taken the time to help educate me, therefore allowing me to educate others. Perhaps you've noticed that the craft brewery business is now booming in Boise? It’s just another wonderful thing about our city we can brag about. And now, distilled spirits are making their appearance. Like wine making and beer brewing, creating whiskey is art and science all rolled into one. We are truly lucky to be fostering an environment that is attracting passionate and creative artisans to our city. It’s been a pleasure putting together my first issue of the magazine. I hope you enjoy our articles on local beer, wine and spirits, as well as the wonderful look at upcoming events in the Idaho Botanical Garden and other informative stories about the people and places of Boise who are making a difference in their own special way. Cheers!

Boise Open Studios hosts their open studios weekend the second week of October every year. This year’s event will take place October 9-11, 2015. This event gives the public an opportunity to watch artists at work and see where they create. It’s a great opportunity to meet a diverse group of local artists working in their chosen media whether it be paint, metal, fiber, glass, photography, assemblage etc. Step through the door into an artist’s private studio and you will see that artist’s mind at work. It’s an incredible once-a-year opportunity for avid collectors and anyone who is curious about the art-making process. A glance around a studio is enormously informative. You will see what tools the artist reaches for. You may see swatches that have been chosen for a fiber arts project; the latest experimental combination of color and texture; even older work tucked away in a dusty corner. BOSCO artists are happy to share stories about their work and the unexpected directions their artistic journey has taken them in. Things you might never learn about during a gallery visit or by reading an artist’s biography. Most BOSCO artists work in studios located in or close to their homes. Be it in the heart of downtown or around the bend and up the hill, each studio is a bright spot of inspiration and productivity, a thoroughly intriguing place to visit. We look forward to welcoming you to our favorite places, our studios. BOSCO is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the visual arts. They were established to promote and foster greater understanding of the creative process between artists and the general public. Their goals include providing a forum for professional artists to share ideas and concepts that enhance creative endeavors and give artistic and intellectual support and serving as a bridge between artists, collectors and the public.

utumn brings cool breezes and scarecrows to the Idaho Botanical Garden located on Old Penitentiary Road. Throughout the garden in October, scarecrows created by local families, schools, artists, community organizations, non-profits and businesses, welcome garden visitors during the 8th annual Scarecrow Stroll presented by Icon Credit Union. Anyone can submit a scarecrow to celebrate the harvest season and everyone can vote for their favorite. The theme for 2015 is “HEROES” – from cartoon super heroes to extraordinary every day heroes like firefighters, teachers, doctors and moms! The 2014 winners were 1st Place: Dr. Mike Veterinarian – by Elaine Banbury, 2nd Place: Scale Craft – by Ustick Y Kids, and 3rd Place: Breaking Bad – by East Boise CRC. Idaho Botanical Garden’s Fall Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, from noon – 6 p.m. Celebrate the changing season at the family friendly event with live music and free children’s activities which include face painting, wagon rides, mini-straw maze, and cornhusk people craft. An artfully arranged pumpkin, haystack and corn husk backdrop is a perfect spot for a family photo. Like Linus in the Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schultz, you may yearn for an encounter with the Great Pumpkin. But unlike Linus, you can wander through the pumpkin patch in the upper Vegetable Garden and discover a great pumpkin to paint and take home. If you're wondering, like Linus, if pumpkins can fly the answer is yes, they do. They sail through the air propelled with some help from the Discovery Center of Idaho who test the laws of physics with their pumpkin trebuchet. (A trebuchet is a type of catapult that uses counter weights.) Guests can shop in the market which features a variety of art from local artisans, or purchase decorative pumpkins and gourds grown in the Garden for home decorations and displays. If you are searching for sparkle this holiday season, you can walk in a winter wonderland at the Idaho Botanical Garden. Now in its 19th year, the annual Winter Garden aGlow, presented by Mountain West Bank, is a holiday tradition that many Treasure Valley residents treasure. A dazzling display of over 300,000 sparkling lights illuminate the garden. Santa and Prancer, one of his reindeer, visit the garden on weekends. Visits with Santa are

free with admission. (Prancer will join Santa Friday-Sundays in December unless she is busy running Mrs. Claus’ errands!) Professional photos are available for purchase. The Holiday Express Train, authentic G-scale replicas of steam and diesel engines, winds its way through December in the English Garden, provided by the Southern Idaho Garden Railway Society. Local choirs will serenade visitors with tales of the three wise kings, angels and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. If you feel your nose turning red, head to the Garden Store for one-of-a-kind gifts. Warm up with hot cocoa, cider and cookies and visit vendors including Dippin Donuts and Old West Concessions for goodies like hot donuts and kettle corn in the Garden. FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL

The Olympic Hotel Venue NEW LIFE FOR AN OLD BOISE ESTABLISHMENT

T

he former Olympic Hotel in the historic Larson Building above Mulligans Pub and Eatery has long been nothing more than a forgotten, dust-collecting, dilapidated storage space—but times are changing. Renamed the Olympic Venue, the former-hotel-turnedspecial-events-space at 1009 Main Street in downtown Boise opened to the public in mid-June after being closed for years and years. Owner Alicia Wagner, owner of Mulligans since 2001, bought the space in 2005 and started renovations on the hundred-year-old building last June. Much of the original hotel has been preserved and repurposed to keep the historical integrity of the space intact. The front façade of the building remains unchanged—except for upgraded windows, that is. Even the red and yellow neon ‘Olympic Hotel’ sign, eagerly restored by Rocket Neon, remains front and center outside. Wagner says the additional ‘Venue’ portion of the sign is temporarily down due to high winds. Inside the building, the bar, columns, stage, and tables that scatter the open floor plan are made from repurposed hotel floorboards. Old brick and large, colorful, painted graphics—one for mouthpiece cigarettes—have been unearthed from behind thick layers of plaster on the walls. The only thing that doesn’t look repurposed is the pool table. Paintings in the windows of an adjacent building created by a Mulligans bartender depict different bars around Boise. Although the paintings are new, it feels like they’re steeped in as much history as the rest of the building. After the soft opening of the Olympic Venue, celebrated by friends, family and people who had worked on the

project, Wagner recalls a woman who used to live at the hotel years ago that came by with her daughter to see the changes being made to her former home—her presence bridging the gap between then and now. Today, the new 21+, 320-occupancy Olympic Venue will host live music of all genres, holiday parties, company parties and more. Wagner says in regards to music, she wants to focus on local bands and bands that travel the Seattle-Portland-Boise-Salt Lake City circuit. Bands like Hillfolk Noir, Riotmaker and The Young Romans have already graced the stage. Patrons can wander between Mulligans and the Olympic Venue and bring food up from downstairs to enjoy while they listen to music. Wagner says the City of Boise has been helpful and supportive of her plan to improve downtown with the Olympic Venue, and that her regular Mulligans customers have been positive during the transition. The reception has been great from clientele both new and old. Frequenters of Mulligans may recognize familiar faces upstairs, as Wagner says much of the Olympic staff is from Mulligans. The Venue may be open full time eventually, but Wagner doesn’t want to detract from Mulligans, which is a local staple. Partygoers should keep their eyes peeled for details about an Olympic Venue Halloween extravaganza that surely shouldn’t be missed. The Olympic Venue is open Friday and Saturday 5 p.m.-2 a.m. To find out more, visit TheOlympicVenue.com.

ith 23 years working in the health insurance industry, my experience tells me that we are clearly in an unprecedented time of change. The idea of finding and enrolling in a health insurance plan is a daunting task for most people. With over 60 plans to choose from, where do you begin? Who should I contact? How can I enroll? There are a numerous questions that need answers! For example, if you travel, you will need to account for medical coverage when you are out of the area. What are the nuances of the Affordable Care Act? Issues abound in dealing with subsidies, buying direct, when to buy, how to buy, and when should my older children have their own policy? What about Medicare? Will the costs be increasing? When can I enroll? What are the plan changes for this year and are all of my doctors and hospitals in network? As a health insurance professional, these are issues that I deal with on a daily basis as I help guide my clients through the entire process. The key to answering all of these questions is contacting an agent. These experts simplify the process. The best news is, it will cost you nothing! Agents are compensated by the carrier and this will not affect your premium. The advantage to using an independent agent is that they have exposure to all plans and as a result, will find the perfect fit for your individual situation. Also, if you have an issue, you can call your agent directly which can save you a lot of time and frustration. Help is available and costs you nothing. Why not take advantage of free professional advice? LET'S REVIEW SOME INFORMATION YOU'LL WANT TO KNOW

desire. Specific concerns surrounding your health issues may require a more in-depth review, such as current medications or certain diseases such as arthritis. You may also stay on your current plan. However, it never hurts to have a professional review your current coverage to make sure you understand your plan and explain any changes that will take place for the new enrollment period. In addition, Medicare’s Trustees have reported that your Part B premium may be increasing in 2016, which you will need to understand and plan for accordingly. With the Affordable Care Act, understanding the opportunity for a subsidy and how it may impact your premium, enrollment, taxes and penalties are vitally important. Depending upon your income, it may be beneficial to go direct to a carrier to purchase a plan that fits your individual and family needs. You can also consider your choices if there is a group policy available at work and how an individual policy might compare. Open enrollment runs November 1- January 31, 2016. Your plan start date will depend on your enrollment date, so timing is crucial. If not enrolled properly, you may be without coverage for a month, which leaves you at risk. With insurance and the health care environment constantly changing, you owe it to yourself to consult with an experienced and knowledgeable Don Brown, health insurance expert. ebekah Guy M.D. has always had a keen interest in aesthetics and health. Recognizing a need for a medical spa with hands on physician involvement in Boise, Dr. Guy opened Foothills Med Spa in June. Medical spas typically provide products and procedures for treating hyper-pigmentation (sun spots), fine lines, wrinkles, loss of facial volume and other unwanted aging concerns. Unlike other med spas, Foothills Med Spa has a physician on site. An integral part of Foothills Med Spa, Dr. Guy provides direct clinical oversight. She ensures her clients get the results they want and provides a higher level of care by doing the injection therapies herself. Additionally, she researches new therapies such as platelet rich plasma therapy and trains her team of certified licensed aestheticians. Foothills Med Spa also focuses on weight loss and overall health and offers botox parties. Dr. Guy brings the latest medical technology to the practice of aesthetics. “Our mission is to help clients look and feel their best,” states Dr. Guy. “We assess

each client’s needs and desires, and then implement a plan that will benefit them both now and in the future. We perform exhaustive research to offer the best in class treatment solutions.” “We believe that health and wellness come from inside; sometimes the exterior needs a little extra help,” states Guy. “Rachel, a younger client, had mild acne. We did a complimentary consultation with her and decided that chemical peels would be a great start to clearing up her skin. We also recommended SkinMedica skincare for her at-home regimen. Rachel wrote us about her results, ‘My skin has benefitted so much from my very first chemical peel. The tone, texture and clarity of my skin continues to improve. I always look forward to my next treatment at Foothills Med Spa.’” Dr. Guy received her medical degree at the University of South Alabama. After interning at Baptist Hospital-Princeton, she completed a three-year residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Spain Rehabilitation Hospital at the

University of Alabama Birmingham, followed by additional advanced training in spinal injections at the Alabama Orthopedic Center. She is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. A Boise resident, Dr. Guy has been practicing as a physician in the Treasure Valley for eight years but has been involved with medicine for most of her life. “My father was a small town physician, so I grew up working with him in his office,” shares Guy. “He was the type of family doctor who did everything from delivering babies to taking out an appendix. He loved to teach so I spent many summers working in his office or following him around the hospital, seeing everything to do with medicine, from the mundane to the most extraordinary. He taught me that truly caring for patients requires more than just knowing the science of medicine.” The team at Foothills Med Spa is dedicated to providing individualized care with a focus on safety and privacy so clients feel re-energized and revitalized.

Spirits Chinden Boulevard has always been known as a place you could find a good watering hole, but drive down it these days and it’s hard not to notice that a change is taking place. Slowly, but surely, local craft wineries and breweries are staking claim to what was once the exclusive domain of bars and nightclubs. It’s testament to a burgeoning national industry that has been making its way into Idaho, and Garden City is not the only place it’s happening by any means. Liquor, or distilled spirits as many like to call it these days, is the latest adult beverage to catch fire in the craft industry. In 2005 there were around 50 distilleries in the country. A decade later there are more than 750, and that number is growing steadily. The newest addition to Boise’s fledgling distillery scene is 8 Feathers, which opened on Maple Grove, just south of Franklin just over two years ago. When Greg Lowe moved to Eagle from Texas to become the CEO of Syringa Networks, he brought his pals Larry Price and Rick McKinney with him because he needed their skills in the company. His wife, Marjie, was retired, but the move put Larry’s wife, Sandee, out of work, so the two best friends decided to start something of their own. “Greg was born in Tennessee and lived in Kentucky, so bourbon is kind of in his blood,” says Marjie. “When he told us how the distillery business was booming in the U.S. we thought, why not?” They did their homework, visiting several distilleries in the West, and found that they were not only doing well, they were all expanding. They also learned that southern Idaho’s dry, high-desert climate and the Treasure Valley’s pristine, artesian well water were perfect for making bourbon. But before they opened their doors the two women spent three months lobbying the Idaho State Legislature to pass a bill that would allow sampling of hard liquor, something that had only been permitted for beer and wine before. “Apparently it had been tried before,” Marjie says, “but it failed because the

sampling size was too big. We proposed a maximum of three, .25 ounce samples per person, and it passed.” Once they were up and running, they immediately began making Greg’s signature bourbon. It needed two years in the barrel, so in the meantime, they began making whiskey to get some product on the shelves and promote their brand. “All bourbons are whiskies, but not all whiskies are bourbons,” Marjie explains. “Our first whiskey was Moonshine. It’s aged about three months. Then we released our Corn Whiskey, which we age six months.” Making the rounds of bars and restaurants to promote their products, Marjie and Sandee learned that whiskey is the fastest growing category in distilled spirits, and women are the fastest growing category in whiskey. Over the past five years, the number of women whiskey drinkers has grown from 12 percent to around 37 percent, so they wanted to create a drink aimed at the female demographic. We

Spirits - cont.) “We have a fantastic vanilla bean whiskey that came out this summer,” says Sandee. The whiskey sits in the barrel by itself for one month, then we spike it with vanilla beans for another two months and let the oils from the vanilla really get in there. A lot of bartenders are really excited about it, and our first batch has already sold out in the stores.” The new, larger Vendome still they installed this past summer increased their production from a barrel-and-a-half a month to nearly eight barrels a month, and by the time the first batch of Greg’s bourbon was released in September, they were running on all cylinders. Both their Corn Whiskey and their Moonshine have won several international medals, including a triple gold and Best of Show for the Corn Whiskey from the Micro Liquor international craft competition this past year. “We’re proud to be an all-Idaho product,” says Sandee, and we go from grain to glass right here in this facility.” While there are only a handful of distilleries in Idaho right now, 8 Feathers expects the whiskey business to grow much like the area’s wine business has over the past decade. 24

Wine The Snake River Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area), Idaho’s first, was established in 2007. It’s home to 15 of Idaho’s 50 wineries, which contributed over $73 million to the state’s economy in 2012. Cinder winemaker Melanie Krause and her husband, Joe Schnerr, are celebrating their tenth vintage this fall and, coincidentally, their 10th wedding anniversary. “We looked at other areas in Washington and Oregon before we decided on Boise,” says Joe, “but we saw the potential in the environment here. It’s a great climate for growing grapes, and consumers who were drinking a lot of wine and looking for high-end wines from the region.” After several years learning the craft at Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington, Melanie decided it was time to strike out on her own. It has clearly been a good decision. “The growth we’ve seen in the wine industry here has been fabulous,” she says enthusiastically. “We’ve been growing our winery as fast as we can handle, which has basically been doubling every year or two, and we’ve never had a year where the wine sold for longer than one year after its release date.”

Combining forces with two other wineries, Telaya and Coiled, their warehouse on 44th Street in Garden City quickly became a mecca for local wine tasting. Since then several other wineries and breweries have opened facilities along Chinden Boulevard. “We welcome them all,” says Melanie, “because the clustering of craft products within an area is appealing to tourists, and this becomes much more of a destination.” Now that Telaya and Coiled are parting ways with Cinder and opening their own facility in Garden City, Cinder has much needed room to grow. “Right now we’re at 6,000 cases a year,” Joe says, "but we think we could do north of 10,000 cases in this space.” “The problem,” adds Melanie, “is that there aren’t enough grapes being grown here. From the very beginning, we planted our flag firmly in Idaho and said we’re going to make wine from Idaho grapes as much as we can because we believe in them. But I’ve always also said that if we have a really bad year, I’ll source grapes from Washington. For the first time in 10 years, we’re having that year.” It’s fairly common for wineries to source grapes from another region. With only 1,800 acres of vineyards currently in Idaho, demand is beginning to outpace production, and neither Joe nor Melanie see it slowing down any time soon.

We have professional

winemakers moving into the

area and taking the craft to the next level...

“The time is ripe for vineyard investment,” says Joe. “We have professional winemakers moving into the area and taking the craft to the next level, and showing that wines from the Snake River Valley can be just as high-quality as our neighboring regions in Washington and Oregon. And even though, in some ways, they are our competition, we all want each other to sucCONTINUED > ceed because it elevates the entire region.”

Craft Beer The craft beer business has been going strong in the U.S. since the 1990s, and it really began making an impact in the Boise area about five years ago. There are more than 50 craft breweries around the state today. Nineteen of them are right here in the Treasure Valley, and even before Cinder came along, they had discovered Garden City, where choices range from Payette Brewing Co., now Idaho’s largest brewer, to the new guy on the block, Haff Brewing. “I was an avid home brewer,” says Brian Haff, who opened the new company a year ago with his wife, Lisa. “But I wanted to make a wider variety of beers. Now we have six fermenters, so I can have six different things going if I want to, but what I actually brew is pretty much determined by demand.” At full production, they can put out 21 barrels, or 42 kegs, a week. Brian makes a killer IPA, a porter, and a watermelon-wheat 26

Boise Lifestyle | October 2015

beer that’s very popular during the summer. Last Valentine’s Day he came out with a white chocolate-blueberry porter that was a big hit. “We sold the entire batch in about a week,” he says with a smile. “Restaurants couldn’t get enough of it. So we’re bringing that one back this fall.” Once they decided to start the brewery it took about 18 months to open. They chose Garden City because of the low lease rates and busy Chinden Boulevard. And after barely a year in operation they’re already looking to expand. “We’re going to do two of our beers in 22 ounce bombers,” says Brian, “so we’ll be doing a bottling line here soon. We’ve submitted art work for labels, but it’s a long process getting them approved.” Brian believes the can is what separates the breweries that are really going to grow

and expand. It’s an expensive proposition, but one he holds out hope for in the future. “I love the idea of growth,” he says. “Right now, we’re learning about forecasting, and the logistics of getting beer made and out the door on a certain timeline. We’re starting to learn what kind of marketing really works for our business. But every time someone comes in here and says this is the best IPA in Idaho, I think, yeah, we’re doing something right.” Even as prolific as they are, local craft breweries are still only a small percentage of the Boise area market. Almost all of the domestic beer sold here is still from monster breweries like Budweiser, Miller or Coors. But the craft industry, whether it’s beer, wine or hard liquor, is making a dent, and as it continues to hammer on the consciousness of Boise consumers, that dent will only get bigger.

ALL ABOARD THE BLUES TRAIN ARTICLE LETTIE STRATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY GARY APTER

I

f you’re a blues fan in Boise, you’ve probably heard Smooth Avenue—the six-piece blues band fronted by vocalist James ‘JT’ Tyler. “People sometimes ask where the name Smooth Avenue comes from,” says Tyler. “A former band member commented that I have a smooth voice but it should have a few more 'ooooo's in the name. 'Avenue' comes from the idea that we take our listeners on a musical journey.” Smooth Avenue, made up of a guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, saxophone, and vocals, are regulars at the Sapphire Room and the Sandbar Patio Bar & Grill in Boise, as well as venues in the Eagle area. “We really believe in providing tasteful and soulful music for our listeners,” says Tyler, who cites BB King, Ike and Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Luther Vandross and others as influences. Tyler started out playing smooth jazz and eventually made the transition to R&B and blues. “I grew up with the blues,” he says. “Some of the early blues greats used to play at a club near me and every weekend I was exposed to some form of soul.” Smooth Avenue has been performing together for just five years, but the members are seasoned musicians. Tyler has been playing on and off for 20 years and several band members have played the circuits in Las Vegas, Reno, New York, and with iconic blues man Bo Diddley. In addition to venues like the Sapphire Room, Smooth Avenue plays weddings (and can take on emcee and master of ceremony duties), holiday parties and more.

“We play music with feeling,” Tyler says. “Whether it’s a happy song or a love song or a sad song, you really want people to feel the music, but also make it fun.” Smooth Avenue is a member band of the Boise Blues Society, and Tyler himself is a member of the Board of Directors. “We promote blues as a unique musical form of America and educate people about the influence blues music has had on modern music,” he says. “If we want to continue this art form we have to bring in and cultivate new people.” To get on board for a musical journey with Smooth Avenue, visit BoiseBlues.org/smooth-avenue-band or find them on Facebook.

A HOME BREWER’S PERSPECTIVE BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEERHOLDER ARTICLE STEVE DOCKTER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

y adventures in brewing and beer began in the mid 90s. At the time I worked for a small company in Solana Beach, California. A couple guys at work started home brewing, and would bring their beer in to sample on Friday afternoons. I was given a basic home brew kit as a gift, and soon my version of Dr. Frankenstein was set loose. After many years of using basic malt extract recipes, I finally decided to take the plunge into the mythical all-grain brewing. This resulted in a lot of research on brewing techniques, some not-so-great beers, much cursing, and some bad batches sent down the drain to an early grave. Eventually the beers started to taste better as I refined my brewing process. There was much rejoicing! Friends and family really liked my beer. They would always say it tasted good, but when questioned about why it was good the answer would be, “I don’t know, it just is.” This lead to a startling revelation that the only reason people thought my beer tasted good was because it was free. I decided to begin to a three-step process to figure out what made a good beer. The first step was to join a home brew club. This was a great step forward, since the club was comprised of like-minded individuals who also wanted to delve into the secrets of beer. There was a lot of shared information, comradery and good feedback. Next I started entering my beer into competitions. That was another great step. I was finally getting feedback from actual non-partial judges! The overall opinion seemed good, but as I entered into more competitions there were issues. Sometimes I would enter the same beer at two different competitions and one was judged well, and one poorly. What was up with these judges? Sometime they had opposite opinions on the very same beer. This led to my next step. That’s right, I became a beer judge. All you have to do is sign up for a test with the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) and take 38

a test. Little did I know that a three-hour long written essay test also involved judging four beers and seeing how you scored them against the proctors. Grueling hours were spent studying for the written part, and even more grueling hours were spent tasting beer. After months of hard work, and a sore writing arm, I had my official BJCP ID. After all this immersion into the study of beer, people often ask, “What is your favorite beer?” Their surprise is evident at my reply of “Rainier.” My love of Rainier beer was solidly forged one summer on a four-day float trip on a stretch of the Missouri River. Needless to say, that section of the river is beautiful and tranquil, but very desolate. We took advice from some of our friends to take as little with us as possible. We were advised that all we needed was a filter for water, as we could put any other drinks in the river to keep cool. So we mistakenly decided that one 24 oz. beer apiece per night would be enough. As you might guess, the beer ran out on the second day and didn’t really taste that great at 70 degrees. The next day was scorching hot and dry as a bone. We landed on an island and as we started preparing our campsite, a group with a tour guide showed up and started making camp on the other side. As I finished putting up the tent, with the sun beating down relentlessly, the dog decided it was a good time to escape. He, of course, headed right over to the other camp. After rounding the dog up and apologizing profusely, the guide noticed me eyeing his ice chest. “Would you like a beer?” were some of the most heavenly words I’ve ever heard. “Sure, whatcha got?” Ice. Cold. Rainier. Never before or since has a beer tasted so great! There is no doubt that I enjoy a well-crafted beer, but beer tastes better in social settings. So get together with a few friends and enjoy whatever it is that you’re drinking. Prost!
