Publisher’s Letter

Life with my dogs. M

y mother likes to tell the story of my first experience with a dog. My brother brought home a stray, which the family named Rastus. I was just a toddler and Rastus tried to lick my face. This upset me. My mother told me that Rastus was being friendly and "just giving me kisses." According to my mom, my demeanor immediately changed. With a smile I said, “Thank you, doggie!" My love of dogs likely began at that moment.

Is there anything more loyal than a dog? They're there when we're happy, and beside us when we're weak. They'll wait when we're late and be just as happy that their master is home. Pets are our friends that don't judge, criticize or leave us for someone else. To them, the grass is never greener. Their love can take a miserable day and turn it into a smile. Their need for us, can give us a reason to be. My dogs, Mike and Sasha Suzie are full of their own personalities. Both were abused as pups, and I "saved" them from the pound, but I believe it's also true that they pick us. My old boy Mike is in his golden years. He can no longer jump up into the car, and frequently needs help getting up to his sleeping place on the couch. I'll know when the day comes for him to go to heaven, but I will repay his loyalty to me as long as I can. In the Boise Valley, we love our pets. I hope you enjoy this edition dedicated to pets as you meet some folks from all walks of life committed to their furry and feathered friends. I'll close with a quote from Dean Koontz, "Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one is a life diminished."

This donation is in addition to the $20,000 Axiom raised for the Walk-For-Wishes in June. Their record-breaking fundraising efforts largely contributed to the success of Idaho’s first Walk for Wishes event, which raised $80,000 surpassing the organization’s goal originally set for $40,000. “We’ve seen firsthand the impact granted wishes have on the wish children and their families,” says JP Green, president of Axiom. “Knowing we helped create a worry- and stress-free moment is extremely rewarding.” 12

You Can Come Home Again WHY THE WEST FAMILY LOVES TO CALL BOISE HOME

ARTICLE DOUG COPSEY | PHOTOGRAPHY WILL HASLER AND PROVIDED

They were married there, and in 1997 they moved to Boise so Jeff could finish his undergraduate studies at Boise State. Kirstin worked as a clinical assistant in the Transitional Care Unit at St. Luke’s, which is where their first son, Johnathan, was born.

W

hen Kirstin West’s husband, Jeff, told her they were leaving Boise so he could attend law school at the University of Idaho, she told him, “We have got to come back here.” Jeff was surprised. When they first met in his native Rexburg, at what was then Ricks College, all his southern California sweetheart could talk about was how much she hated the harsh eastern Idaho weather and that she would never, ever live in Idaho. 16

Boise Lifestyle | September 2015

“I fell in love with Boise,” says Kirstin. “Everything we could want for our family is right here." Lincoln, their second boy, was born in Moscow, and when Jeff graduated in 2000, he decided to serve his country. “I joined the Air Force,” Jeff explains. “As soon as I passed the bar we went to Alabama for training. We were transferred to Washington, D.C., just one week after 9/11. It was a tense time.”

They spent the next three years there, with Jeff serving as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, and had two more kids, Annahlise and Chase. Then, in 2004, Kirstin got her wish–they were reassigned to Mountain Home. They purchased a home in Boise and immediately began acquainting the whole family, which now included two more boys, Brigham and Spencer, with Boise’s vibrant outdoor lifestyle. Family hikes soon became backpacking expeditions exploring Idaho’s hidden mountain lakes. “It’s just a great family activity,” says Jeff. “It really brings everyone together, and I don’t think there’s any place more beautiful.” Jeff served another three years of active duty before transferring to the reserves, where he still serves in the Judge Advocate General’s office in Mountain Home Air Force Base. It was 2007 when he first hung out his own shingle, opening a law office in downtown Boise’s Alaska Building. Next door to him was another attorney, Lois Fletcher. They became good friends, and a CONTINUED >

few months later announced their partnership in the new firm of Fletcher & West, handling cases in family law as well as criminal and military law, among others. With Jeff working full-time at the law firm, you might think Kirstin had no time for anything except the six children. But you would be wrong. She went back work at St. Luke’s, this time in the ER, and took some classes at Boise State with an eye toward a graphic design business. She ran her own commercial sign company out of her home for a few years before deciding that her true calling was medicine, so back to school she went. By this time, Johnathan was ready to graduate from Borah High. The penchant for the outdoors fostered by his parents has turned him into an avid rock climber. That led to a job supervising the rock climbing wall at a local YMCA. “Lincoln started out in the Optimist football program,” Kirstin says. “He was also playing lacrosse, but now that he’s starting at Borah, I think football is going to become a priority.” “A future Bronco,” Jeff chimes in with a grin. They are both huge Bronco fans. Annahlise spends her free time at Idaho Ice World working on her figure skating, and all three of their younger boys will all be in the Optimist football program this year. Through it all, Jeff and Kirstin still manage to find a little time for themselves.

“We do a date night every week,” says Kirstin with a grin. “It helps keep us sane.” “We both like Big Jud’s hamburgers,” Jeff says. “But my favorite lately has become the Harrison Hollow Brewpub.” “I really like Bonefish Grill” adds Kirstin, “and Moon’s.” Their choice of restaurants hasn’t always been so prolific. Kirstin suffers from celiac disease, which requires her to maintain a strictly gluten-free diet. “That’s another thing I love about Boise,” she enthuses. “So many restaurants in our community have really stepped up with excellent gluten-free menus. It makes our date nights so much more pleasant.” With Johnathan about to start college, and the youngest, Spencer, now in school full-time, both Jeff and Kirstin can stop and smell the roses a little more often, and truly enjoy the community they love. But, rest assured, they won’t be sitting still for very long. Jeff’s law firm is busier than ever. Kirstin’s medical classes paid off at the end of last year, and she landed a new job at St. Luke’s as the Clinical Quality Reviewer. “It’s a dream job for me,” Kirstin says. “The flexibility they allow me makes it great for the kids, too." Idaho Humane Society: Making a Difference HELPING ANIMALS LIVE HEALTHY, HAPPY LIVES ARTICLE HANNAH PARPART | PHOTOGRAPHY HOWARD SMITH

A

s the Treasure Valley hums through summer enjoying all the incredible events and limitless outdoor activities the area has to offer, the Idaho Humane Society is also running on all engines with the influx of homeless pets that summer brings to the shelter. From a tiny orange kitten found abandoned and alone, to a large, goofy Labrador mix found as a stray with a broken leg, dozens of animals stream through the shelter's doors each day. Many of these pets have special needs that require extra attention and time to prepare them for a life in a new home. The tiny kitten will be whisked off to a home of an exceptional type of volunteer, a pet foster parent. Idaho Humane Society 20

foster homes save the lives of animals by expanding the walls of the shelter. For kittens, the extra bit of care needed is mostly time, raising them to eight weeks of age when they're old enough to go to a new home of their own. Ill and injured pets that enter animal shelters across the country often have journeys that are perilous with sad outcomes. Luckily, at the Idaho Humane Society the shelter has a full-service veterinary medical center that works tirelessly to provide lifesaving medical care to homeless pets that must have their wounds treated, broken bones repaired or illnesses fought before seeking new homes. Sometimes dogs arrive at the shelter with behavior challenges. For the last decade,

the Idaho Humane Society's Inmate Dog Alliance Project of Idaho (IDAPI) program has taken these deserving dogs with special behavioral needs and paired them with inmate trainers for two months of intensive training and socialization. The transformation seen in these once thrown-away dogs is incredible. Adopters give rave reviews of their IDAPI trained dogs and the participating prisons report their own incredible transformation in inmates that learn lifelong lessons about compassion from their canine charges. The Idaho Humane Society also has safety net programs to provide assistance to struggling families with pets to help keep those pets where they belong, with their loving owners. “See Spot Walk celebrates the human-animal bond that makes our animal companions so special to us and supports the cause of finding new homes for homeless pets.”

the Idaho Humane Society experienced a huge influx of pets surrendered by distraught owners due to economic hardship. Pets were surrendered because of their owners’ inability to feed or provide basic care. The Pet Food Pantry was established to provide pet food for animals of struggling families to keep them in their original homes and out of the shelter. In addition to providing pet food distribution to these families, the Pantry also makes monthly deliveries to hundreds of pets belonging to homebound senior citizens across Ada County that are part of the Meals on Wheels program. Many of these pets are their seniors' only companionship and monthly deliveries of pet food make pet ownership possible.

As summer slips into fall, the Idaho Humane Society prepares for one of the most beloved events for pet lovers in Idaho, See Spot Walk. See Spot Walk is the largest dog walk and festival in Idaho and also the biggest community fundraiser for the shelter each year. This fundraiser brings over 3,000 dogs and their people to Julia Davis Park on the first Saturday each October, (this year on October 3rd), for a 1-mile walk, games, contests, vendor booths, food and lots of fun. All funds raised directly benefit homeless animals the Idaho Humane Society cares for all year round. “When I come home and I am greeted by my dog there is this overwhelming happiness that comes over both of us," says Lisa Jarussi-Smith, programs coordinator at the Idaho Humane Soci-

Even if you don't own a dog or don’t have one able to join you for the event, this fun, canine-centric event is a must-notmiss day. Boise Councilman Ben Quintana’s strongest supporters include his wife Christine and two German Shepherd mixes Charlie and Tucker. Charlie turned 12 years old last May and Tucker will turn six in November. Quintana still vividly remembers how much training and physical activity Charlie required from the moment Christine brought Charlie home with her after adopting him 11 years ago from the Idaho Humane Society. “Several years later we decided Charlie needed a friend. As luck would have it, we received an email from the Idaho Humane Society about a German Shepherd mix puppy. Tucker was only 1416 weeks old and was as cute as could be. When we brought him home, Charlie didn't know what to make of him, but Tucker was in awe of his magnificently cool big brother who could catch Frisbees, jump in the back of the SUV, and eat mounds of food in a matter of seconds. Today, they are the best of friends.” Charlie and Tucker love exploring new off-leash trails but are just as comfortable indoors. “They absolutely melt when we sit with them on the living room rug and hang out together as a family.” “Charlie's biggest pet peeve is how Tucker bites his ears, neck and back legs when he gets excited,” shares Quintana. “Tucker's pet peeve is being left behind. If Christine tries to take Charlie for a walk without him, Tucker will bark and whine so loud over this small injustice that you will have no choice but to take him too.” “When all is quiet and they are lounging on their dog beds, we simply say ‘do a little one’ and they will both begin to howl quietly then gradually increase their pitch and pace. I can only imagine what that must sound like from outside our house,” laughs Quintana. “Our favorite memory of Charlie was his first ocean experience on the Oregon Coast,” says Quintana. “Our favorite memory of Tucker is also close to our worst memory of him. As a puppy, he was a terror. One time we came home to find he had chewed half a roll of stamps and spread the sticky pieces all over his body and our living room. He also grabbed an ink pen and somehow must have held it in his mouth, while parading around the living room 26

Marcia Franklin, producer/host at Idaho Public Television, says her pet adventure began in a classic way. “It all started with a ‘How much is that doggie in the window?’ moment. Except it wasn’t a dog; it was a cat,” shares Franklin. “I was adopted by a very regal-looking tabby cat who was lounging in a cage in a pet store. "My knowledge of cats was so limited that a friend had to help me buy the necessary items for him. And that first night, Marcia Franklin and Stuart I became alarmed at his photo by Aaron Kunz breathing. Turns out he just had a loud purr! Eighteen years later, when I had to say a tearful goodbye to my beloved Cricket, I definitely fell into the cat-egory of ‘cat person.’ I was overwhelmed with grief. Because of that, I didn’t want another cat. But a little over a year later, I saw a thin, tuxedo cat in a cold parking lot. I got out of the car and it ran towards me. She had no collar, so I took her home. I named her Nini. “A few months later, it seemed like Nini needed a companion, so I adopted a kitten, a little gray whom I named Stuart. Stuart came home very ill, but even then, I could see a mischievous spirit that reminded me of Cricket. “If you have a problem with a cat, try to find out who owns it, and talk to that perMarcia F her feli ranklin and C son,” Franklin advises. “If it’s n e co m r panion icket, for 18 y feral, find a rescue group to ears. trap it, and have it spayed or neutered. Don’t hurt or kill cats. My cats live indoors, but not every cat can be an indoor cat, especially if they’ve already lived outside. I tried keeping Cricket indoors and he went nuts, howling and scratching. Once outside, he became calm. Most cats are loving if you get to know them and meet them on their own terms. That’s what makes them so interesting and unique, and perhaps serves as a lesson when we encounter humans as well.”

ARTICLE SARA WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

ine years ago, Mia Paulus was a hardworking accountant with a revolutionary idea that she couldn’t get out of her mind. “I started on my own back in 2006,” explains Paulus. “I had this business idea back then. I invested thousands of dollars in some software, but it just didn’t do what I wanted it to do. People weren’t ready for it.” Then the Great Recession struck with a vengeance. Businesses were laying off employees left and right. “I think that smart phones have made people less afraid of technology and less afraid to step out of the box,” says Paulus.” A lot of businesses downsized during 2008 and now they want to grow in a different way. The Millennial generation doesn’t want to have to worry about managing a bunch of employees. The software and internet speeds are finally there so they can outsource the admin they need.” As Paulus watched the business world evolve, she dove back into her virtual administration business plan, and two years ago The Admin Center was created. “We offer enterprise services for businesses of all sizes,” notes Paulus. “We are actually working with people who have franchises and with small businesses. We take the headache on.” Taking on the headache of both front and back office means that businesses have more time to concentrate on their primary focus growing their business and increasing revenue. 28

Boise Lifestyle | September 2015

Paulus works hard to ensure that The Admin Center is the very best company that it can be. “I’m definitely the non-traditional CEO. I have six kids,” Paulus says with a laugh. “We always fall short somewhere. Anyone who needs a more flexible situation would be a good fit. We feel like we can bless the lives of not only those who work for us, but also the businesses that we work with.” “I prayed for many years that I could be a stay-at-home mom,” Paulus remembers. “It wasn’t ever a possibility.” As Paulus geared up to start The Admin Center, occasionally she had doubts. “When I was pregnant with my 20 month old, I was crying and told myself, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore,’ but I felt prompted to continue. I want to build this company. I’ve never thought The Admin Center was going to be small. I had to prepare and get the inner strength that I needed to know where we were supposed to go with this company.” That inner strength and preparation has paid off. Though The Admin Center is a local company, it provides enterprise services for companies across the country from Maryland to California, and this is just the beginning. “As we grow we will be able to do even more specialized administration,” says Paulus. “We have a partner program where we work with coaches, marketing consultants, financial advisers, lawyers and other consultants.” Paulus has a vision. “From

accounting and HR, we aren’t just a bookkeeping company. We want to take it a step further with rerouting invoices and offering enterprise solutions.” Paulus wants to use her company to support parents who need the flexibility that a virtual office can provide. “Keep parents parenting is the charity that I want to start that will provide the flexibility they need to provide for themselves and be self-reliant,” Paulus says. “I have a unique situation, and I am creating a company that is non-traditional with technology and video conferencing. I am willing to push the boundaries of what a traditional company should be.”

Quality Water For A Better Life

LOCAL EXPERT SHARES INFORMATION ABOUT HOME WATER SOFTENER SYSTEMS ARTICLE MICHELLE WILLIAMS

H

ow can improving water usage quality make a difference in life? From washing and cleaning, to cooking and bathing, folks use water every day. Imagine having softer skin, fluffier laundry, better tasting water for cooking and drinking and no hard water residue or build-up which cuts down on cleaning time. A high quality water softener may be just the ticket. Jason Bergsma, a water expert at Kinetico, a local company that has been in the quality water business for more than 30 years, offers some expert information about water softener systems and how water softeners can improve your life.

HOW DO PEOPLE BENEFIT THE MOST FROM HAVING A HOME WATER SYSTEM?

Bergsma: The biggest benefits of having a whole home water system is better health. The human body is one of the best filters in the world but after years of filtering foreign substances that hide in water, it can affect the body. Not to mention the time saved from cleaning up after issues with hard water 30

Boise Lifestyle | September 2015

and the wear and tear it takes on a home’s appliances, clothes, dishes and plumbing. WHAT WATER ISSUES CAN WATER SOFTENERS HELP WITH?

Bergsma: Almost all the water in the Treasure Valley is classified as very hard. Hardness in the water comes from the rock beds that the water travels through in the aquifers before it is brought to the surface. Most people have experienced the effects of hardness in their hair, skin, clothes and in their household appliances. Hardness is in both city and well water. The city does a great job at sterilizing the water they push out to the community. It is free from harmful contaminants and diseases, but in processing it to give everybody safe water it has to be chlorinated. Private well water in the valley is usually high in iron. Kinetico has systems that can soften and dechlorinate or remove iron in one pass. Some places in the Treasure Valley have problems with sulfur smell or metallic tastes in their water. These types of problems can also be treated with a quality water softener.

WHAT SETS KINETICO APART FROM OTHER WATER TREATMENT BRANDS?

Bergsma: Kinetico differs from other brands because we are the only ones that offer a twin-tank non electric system. Our control valves are run by nothing but the kinetics of the water being pushed through it. Not having electronics as part of our system drastically cuts down on maintenance. We can offer a 10 year warranty on these systems which is unheard of at other companies because of electric components. WHAT DO CUSTOMERS LOVE ABOUT KINETICO WATER SOFTENERS?

Bergsma: Kinetico customers love the low maintenance of our systems. For the most part, if you change your filter on a regular basis and keep salt in the brine drum, your system will give you years and years of maintenance free life. Kinetico customers also like knowing that Kinetico is veteran owned and operated and that all the parts of our systems are made in the USA.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO BOISE?

I grew up in Santa Barbara, California, playing in the sand and surf of the Pacific Ocean, but what brought me to Idaho and the Boise area is that my husband is from Idaho. After 21 years in the Air Force, being stationed in Northern California, Alaska and South Dakota, we chose Idaho as our place to semi-retire. We lived in Burley for five years and then came west to Meridian. We love the diversity and friendliness of the people, the many places to shop, and mixture of rural areas surrounding, and within, the city. We love the mild climate that still gives us four seasons to enjoy. Having the mountains within one to two hours is also a great plus. The Treasure Valley is a great place for family fun with many parks and places to entertain our grandchildren. DESCRIBE YOUR ART:

jects. Having lived in Alaska for five years, I am fond of the wildlife. I will tackle most any subject just to see if I can get it from my mind to the canvas or paper. WHERE DID YOU STUDY ART?

I was always praised for my artistic ability and excelled at it in part because of this praise. I took many art classes in high school and majored in art at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, and received an Associate of Arts degree in general art. I took classes in oil painting, watercolor, pencil drawing, figure drawing, lettering and sculpture. I spent a year at Brigham Young University trying to transition into commercial art, but decided it was not for me. Years later, I earned a bachelor's degree in business management from National American University. WHERE CAN PEOPLE VIEW YOUR ART?

I bring beauty and healing to the world with my art and words. I paint and I do cartooning. My painting has morphed over the years into what I call Abstract Realism. I mix my traditional art schooling with many bright colors and shapes. I use vibrant colors, taking a subject, and painting it in a completely unnatural color. I have a talent for blending colors to make my art unique. My newest paintings in oil all have a message and story that come with them. I believe that beauty is essential to life and this world. I want my art to touch hearts and bring joy to each person who gazes upon it. I have worked with many different mediums including watercolor, pastel, pencil, pen and ink, acrylic, and oil paint. I have always shared my art making logos, greeting cards, cartoon family portraits, coloring books, watercolor cartoon artwork for t-shirts, children’s clothing, aprons, pillows and magnets.

CynthiaFackrell.com WHEN IS YOUR NEXT SHOW?

At the moment I am working on getting my artwork in various places throughout the Treasure Valley. I also paint with words. I have written an award-winning book titled Gravity’s Embrace – A True Unsolved Mystery Surrounding An Alaskan Pilot. It is a true story about my brother's 10- month disappearance in Alaska. It is available at Hastings Bookstores in Meridian and Boise as well as Amazon and my website GravitysEmbrace.com. Scattered Determination

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I get most of my painting inspiration from family, nature and beautiful photographs. Each place I have lived has inspired me in some way, and I like to use local wildlife, landscapes etc. as sub-

Mobile Pet Medical Care A FAMILY BUSINESS

ARTICLE PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON

D

avid Ormond, D.V.M., the founder of Mobile Pet Medical Care, was a veterinarian at Boise’s first emergency clinic. His son, Robert, also in practice with his dad, remembers an event long ago that inspired the mobile practice. “One Friday a dog came in after being hit by a car, and even though my dad had the skills to fix the broken bone of the dog, he was forced to just keep it on pain meds until Monday when the clinic’s primary doctor would do the surgery,” recalls David’s son, Robert Ormond, D.V.M. David quit that clinic and started a mobile practice modeled after one he discovered in Nebraska while training for the Air Force. In 1979, Ormond opened Mobile Pet Medical Care. “I have wanted to be a veterinarian since I can remember,” reflects Robert. “Between 4th and 5th grade, after a summer of being with my dad working with animals, I told him I wanted to be his apprentice. As a teenager I answered phones and scheduled appointments. I graduated veterinary school in February 2011 and have practiced alongside my dad ever since.” Robert focuses on animal behavior, dermatology and dentistry. “We do home visits to decrease the stress on pets and people,” shares Robert. “Ninety-eight percent of our work is with dogs and cats." “One of our patients, a cat, was kicked out of his last veterinarian due to his bad behavior,” relates Robert. “As I walked in the front door, the cat greeted me, rubbed up on my legs and let me pet him. I examined him in the entry way and gave the vaccines. After getting poked by the needles, the cat turned around, looked at me as if to say ‘That was strange’ and sat in a chair about four feet away. The cat’s owners truly saw the difference that a home visit makes. That’s why I do what I do–to relieve the stress of the animal and also the stress of the people. "We do treat some farm animals. Monday we were sewing up a sheep. We are the veterinarian for the Aquarium so we get our exotic fix that way. There is never a dull moment being a house call vet.”

Boise Lifestyle | September 2015

Their state-of-the-art, 26-foot clinic on wheels can do everything a regular clinic does, just at a patient's front door. "We have x-ray, microscope, dental cleaning equipment, a surgery suite and full pharmacy," Robert says. "We have literally everything a ‘fixed facility’ has.” Clients are surprised by their communication style. “Many of my clients are surprised with the time I take explaining things," he says. "We make sure you know what the plan is to take care of your pet before we leave the patient.” Veterinary medicine is challenging. "Everything that comes through the door is not only a different case but potentially a different species," Robert explains. "This also is what makes it so enjoyable. Healing pets and keeping them healthy has a huge impact on people's well being.” Robert has his own pet, too—a cat named Baxter—who he shares with his wife Katie and their five energetic children.

There are several, though one of my favorites was a trip to New York City last May with my mom. COLLEGE YEARS?

College is where I discovered my self confidence. Moving from Albuquerque to attend college in Pullman was one of the best things I have done for myself.

LOCAL LIVING CULINARY NEIGHBORHOOD ADVENTURES!

Kahootz Steak and Ale House 1603 N MAIN ST, MERIDIAN, ID 83642 (208) 895-9861 Opening in 2002, Kahootz began with a basic pub concept serving up burgers, wings, and traditional pub fare. It was a couple years later that owner John Forseberg partnered with Executive Chef Joe Anderson and this little pub has evolved into a local favorite gathering destination. The food is completely scratch cooking from home-made soups to their hand-cut steaks. And they are known for their seafood specials as they fly in fresh fish, including species direct from Honolulu. More recently Kahootz added an additional Chef, Chris Bailey, who continues to add his creative twist to the menu. The clientele is full of regulars that dine at Kahootz sometimes 2-3 times a week. The Fresh Sheet menu is available Wed-Sat, and these regular diners are already asking for it early in the week to study what will be available. They are excited to plan what they will order off the Fresh Sheet. This is a loyal clientele, a group worth joining. Kahootz does not advertise. They have earned their success through “word-of-mouth” with quality food and service. The staff is a tight-knit group working together to give every diner satisfaction. Joe quips, “We are here to build relationships where every customer is a friend and the entrée is an interview.” No matter what you decide to eat, save space for the Bread Pudding, their signature dessert. To tantalize you on your first visit, consider the 8 oz. Ribeye on Monday and Tuesday nights for $13.50. Also join us for lunch on Taco Truck Mondays. Kahootz embraces the street vendor concept with creative Hispanic choices. Beyond the food, the bar has 43 beers on tap with some that rotate seasonally. All glassware is stored in a trough of crushed ice. This brings you a cold beer with flavor vs. a frosted mug melting a film into the beer. Also, inquire about the rotating cask beer on tap. Cask beers have no nitro (CO2) for carbonation; instead the sugars and yeast form a natural pressure acting like nitro. Cask beers are very unique if you have never tried one before. Brought to you by Supporting Local Restaurants

Come in for a beer and leave as a new member of the cl u b! This is a hidden gem.

Parting Thoughts

Welcome to My Menagerie WORDS DENISE SNODELL

D

og lovers, cat hoarders, bird feeders, snake keepers and friends of all furries, listen up. We have a fish. One lousy, tiny fish. And I resent it. I don’t even know if it has a name. This sounds cold, yes, but I’m being honest. Our perky little lone-surviving zebra has done nothing to offend me. He minds his own business. He just darts around his tank, to and fro, looking so zippy and purposeful 24/7. It’s kind of admirable, really. The problem is what he represents: Compromise. Years ago, when we learned cat fur and cat pelt (!) were kryptonite to our sons, we conveniently scratched the general idea of mammals as pets. Sure, there are some allergy-free dogs out there, but I’ve casually observed many no-shed breeds seem a bit too adorably hyper for my taste. Have I researched enough? No. Have I even tried? No again, because I’ve also noticed every pedigree or mix calls for an accessory that usually doesn’t go with my outfit. It’s the little blue plastic bag. I’m realistic. Employing the dog waste bag every single day would likely be left to me. It’s a tough thing to visualize. Plus, amazingly, the kids have never begged for a puppy. It might have to do with the doggie bag. What strategists. I just high-fived myself for the millionth time over this streak of luck. Now I sound even colder. You’re probably looking at your little woofer right now, aghast that another human is thrilled about never having to pronounce, “Dog is my copilot.” I briefly had a beagle mix as a child. I loved him dearly. So I understand your tsk-tsking. Yet I just high-fived myself again. No drool on the sofa! I do miss cats. In my former life, I’ve had hoards. Loved ‘em, too.

Boise Lifestyle | September 2015

I still swoon over felines. Nearly every day, I get sucked into the internet kitten video vortex. Part of me would love to find a basket of orphaned, wideeyed fur balls at my doorstep and let my sons sneeze themselves into the Guinness Book of World Records. But I just can’t. You might ask, “What about a little sequestered tank of gerbils or hamsters?” Again, there’s fur involved, and I’m way too lazy to research whether or not gerbils or hamsters have that dander/pelt thing going on. Plus, there was the terrible gerbil or hamster incident of years ago. When my oldest was in first grade, he volunteered to have our family babysit the class gerbils or hamsters over spring break, because, just like our pet inventory, our spring break plans are usually lame. The gerbils or hamsters came in a plastic habitat, which was “sealed” with a tube contraption that screamed, “Honey, I shrunk the McDonald’s PlayPlace.” At first, all went well, minus the nocturnal scratching noises. Then, by the fifth day, we discovered an empty cage. The little rodents broke free. Clawshank Redemption. As I searched the house in a most horrified state, I found myself wishing I had photographed the gerbils or hamsters. I seriously considered purchasing body double replacements. There was no way I was going to break bad news to 20 happy 1st graders sporting post-vacation Mickey Mouse (or hamster) hats. After a frantic morning, I found the critters partying under the piano. I cornered them and picked them up with my bare hands. One bit me on the finger. It bit me! I was bleeding. Bleeding! There’s nothing like a flashback to make me reevaluate things. Secretly, maybe, I kind of like that toothless fish. I might name him Rufus.
