I
love weddings. The excitement of witnessing a bride and groom marry is such a wonderful experience. I will never forget the day I married the love-of-my-life, Sam. The weather was chilly for our outdoor reception in our family friend’s orchard, but we didn’t care. The bottom of my dress brushed across mud leaving a smudge of dirt along the hem, but it didn’t matter. We were creating cherished memories, together.
It’s been a while since that fateful day, but it is not a day I will ever forget. As you read through the pages of this Wedding Issue, I hope you find ideas that will help to make your wedding or the wedding of someone you care about an unforgettable experience. Watch for the story about LaNeige Bridal to help you find just the right dress for the special occasion. Look for advice from Michael Tapia, owner of local restaurant and catering company Kindness, about how to find just the right caterer. Receive fun tips from a recent Boise bride about the best way to plan a wedding while staying on budget. The best thing about this issue is that there is something for everyone. If you are interested in history, consider taking a field trip to the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial—watch for the article titled “Trees of Hope” to read more about it. Celebrate Memorial Day by reading about how local hometown hero Ken Rodgers is honoring Vietnam War veterans. This issue is full of stories about fascinating, brave people trying to make the world a better place. I invite you to pull up a chair, sit back and relax, and enjoy reading about both brides and bravery.

arah and Michael Koseki from Boise were married on May 25, 2013. The proposal came a year and a half before on Christmas Eve. A night of so much excitement, Sarah couldn’t sleep! The couple recommends a long engagement to plan and afford the wedding as you go along. Their venue, the Crystal Ballroom in downtown Boise, was secured at a Wedding Show for a remarkable price. Sarah gathered ideas on Pinterest and spent time creating many do-it-yourself projects that saved expenses. This included the beautiful bridal bouquet she made with vintage broaches. Flowers were arranged by An Open Vase, a home business that was more affordable due to no overhead with a florist shop. Oh Taste and See Cakes, another home business, made the wedding cake to cut, but served cupcakes to the guests. Reach out to friends and family for help. You’ll be surprised at the talent and willingness of everyone. Both the photographer and DJ were friends of the bride. One year in advance, the honeymoon was also booked. With monthly payments, the couple owed nothing when they boarded the plane to the Mexican Riviera. Sarah’s Tip: “Enjoy every minute as the wedding day goes by in a flash. Take the time to visit all your guests at each table for many memorable photos!”

Trees of Hope ANNE FRANK'S LEGACY LIVES ON AT THE ANNE FRANK HUMAN RIGHTS MEMORIAL ARTICLE DAN PRINZING | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
E
tched into the stone at the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial, the quotes from Anne Frank’s diary are shared with more than 10,000 K-12 students and university undergraduates each year through docent-led tours. A bronze statue of Anne Frank is surrounded by the Memorial Quote Walls, Rose Beal Legacy Garden, Frank Church Writing Table and Universal Declaration of Human Rights that echo Anne’s message of faith in humanity. Chancing a peek out the attic window while in her two years of captivity in the Amsterdam secret annex, Anne wrote on May 13, 1944, “Our chestnut tree is in full bloom. It is covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year.” For Anne, the chestnut tree in the back garden represented her longing for freedom – it was outside and she was not. “Believe me, if you have been shut up for a year and a half, it can get too much for you some days…Cycling, dancing, whistling, looking out into the world, feeling young, to know that I’m free – that’s what I long for…” (December 24, 1943). In a national competition, the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights was awarded a sapling from Anne’s chestnut tree. One of 11 in the U.S., the sapling will be planted and publicly dedicated in the downtown Boise Memorial on Wednesday, May 13 – adding another element of Anne’s story to the landscape. However, it’s not the only tree rooted with a story. On April 23, 2014, Buddy Elias, Anne Frank’s cousin and last surviving member of her immediate family, visited the Memorial and dedicated a chestnut oak in the memory of his cousins “Anne and Margot, beloved and unforgettable.” During the ceremony, Buddy added, “Before I did not know what Boise was; now it is in my heart.” The sole survivor of her family, Gerda Weissmann Klein endured the ghetto, deportation, slave-labor camps, and the infamous three-month death march from the Polish German border to southern Czechoslovakia. Her story is an inspiration to every individual struggling with tragedy and searching for a reason to hope. On October 2, Gerda Weismann Klein thoughtfully 2006, she planted a tree in the looks on while gently holding the tree she planted. 14

“We still love life, we haven’t yet forgotten the voice of nature, and we keep hoping for … everything.” --Anne Frank, May 26, 1944 Memorial. Her plaque reminds us that, “Our youth are the promise of a new spring in the forest of the world.” Hannah Pick-Goslar is best known for her friendship with Anne Frank. Both girls attended the Sixth Public Montessori School (now the Anne Frank School) in Amsterdam. In 1943, Hannah, her father, sister Gabi and grandparents were arrested and sent to a transit camp, then eventually to Bergen-Belsen where she was briefly reunited with Anne. Hannah and Gabi were the only members of their family to survive the Holocaust. On November 4, 1998, she dedicated a tree in the Memorial with the plaque, “We all should try to live in peace together even if we have a different religion The Idaho Anne or a different skin color because we all are Frank Human created in the image of God… ‘love your Rights Memorial neighbor as yourself.’” was awarded a Jacqueline Van Maarsen, a childhood friend 2014 Certificate who attended Anne’s 13th birthday party at of Excellence by which she received her diary as a present TripAdvisor for confrom her parents, planted a tree in Anne’s sistently receiving memory on May 10, 1997. Her plaque states, “Fate decreed otherwise, I would never see her again, my vivacious friend with her zest for life. May this tree symbolize the message Anne left to the world. A message directed against discrimination and prejudice.” Risking her own life, Miep Gies helped to hide Anne Frank, her parents, sister and four other Jews in the attic. After the Security Service raided the secret annex, it was Miep who rescued and saved Anne’s diary from the Nazis. While visiting Boise, she planted a tree in memory of Anne Frank on June 6, 1996. Many stories are “planted” throughout the City of Trees. Each, like Anne’s, proclaims “I want to go on living even after my death!” (April 4, 1944). Horse Sense Ability DIANA LINCOLN-HAYE, EQUINE THERAPIST
ARTICLE PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON | PHOTOGRAPHY MIKE BRYANT
D
iana Lincoln-Haye doesn’t horse around when treating her clients. Lincoln-Haye MS, LPC, NCC has loved and lived around horses her entire life. She trained and used them on her family’s cattle ranch in Kimberly, Idaho for 27 years, so it was natural that when she became a counselor she would use them in therapy with her clients. She helped raise an autistic grandson and when she found that riding was beneficial for him, she realized it might be helpful for others. To learn about equine assisted therapy, Lincoln-Haye did an internship with Dr. Rand Gurley in Sandpoint, Idaho. Gurley specializes in trauma and equine assisted therapy. Lincoln-Haye earned a master’s degree in clinical counseling at Prescott College in Arizona. “Equine Assisted Psychotherapy incorporates horses experientially for mental and behavioral health therapy and personal development,” explains Lincoln-Haye. “It is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist who is a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address therapy goals.” Lincoln-Haye likes equine therapy because of the joy that horses give people. Lincoln-Haye’s love and respect for horses is evident as she describes the horses used in her practice. Four horses are utilized at her practice Horses for Wellness but one holds a particular place in her heart. “Hank is a 27-year-old blue paint horse.” says Lincoln-Haye. “We’ve had him his whole life. He’s a very gentle, intuitive horse.” Hank and the other horses at Horses for Wellness benefit clients of all ages. A mental health professional, who is also a horse professional, supervises activities such as grooming, feeding, haltering and leading a horse. “There are several aspects of cognitive/equine-assisted therapy that work well with kids who have emotional and CONTINUED >

Enjoy The Taste of True Italian Whether you are looking for a quiet dinner for two or fun place to gather with family and friends, Luciano’s is the right place for you. Nothing says romance like a nice Italian dinner in a warm inviting setting. Luciano’s offers a romantic atmosphere that has a cozy Tuscan style. Though it may be great for a quiet evening out, Luciano’s is also a fun place to take a group. The atmosphere is welcoming with a come-as-you-are feel. “Fresh flowers on the table, candlelight in a chianti bottle, fresh linens and the best service in Boise,” describes owner Beverly Banner, adding to the pleasant feeling in the dining room. “A man can bring his family to Luciano’s, have a nice dinner, be waited on in a friendly atmosphere and not have to break the bank.” Banner explains what attracts people to Luciano’s.

behavioral issues,” notes Lincoln-Haye. “One of the simplest aspects is diversion. When a young person is focused on grooming, feeding or exercising a horse, his focus is no longer on his own issues and problems.” Older children benefit from interaction with horses too. “Troubled teens can be in a state of aggression, defiance or anger. Using horse therapy with teens helps maintain a constant and healthy chemical balance. Horses provide troubled youth with an opportunity to learn how to control and work with animals.” Many adults have also benefited from equine therapy. “As adults, it is important to know how to communicate,” states Lincoln-Haye. “Horses are wonderful teachers to help us better understand and learn how our non-verbal communication might be impacting or influencing others in our lives. Horses put us in touch with our emotions and keep us in the present which is especially helpful for people who have experienced trauma or have been diagnosed with PTSD.” Lincoln-Haye remembers a single mom and her two children who benefitted from equine therapy. “She had been in an abusive relationship. Equine therapy gave her a feeling of trust to work with such a big but gentle horse and it gave her children the ability to express their fears in a safe environment.” Lincoln-Haye moved to Eagle a year and a half ago with her husband, Stan, to be close to Nichole Rioux and Natasha Haye, two of her daughters. Lincoln-Haye has four children and two stepchildren. People who are resilient and are willing to work through whatever life throws at them inspire Lincoln-Haye. She also might inspire others because she has been through difficult times herself since she lost her 19-yearold daughter Lacey seven years ago. “I believe in living fully as you go through life and enjoying what you do,” states Lincoln-Haye. “I am inspired most by ordinary people that I have met over the years who do extraordinary things. Idaho is full of those types of people.” HORSES FOR WELLNESS

All About Flooring EXPERT SHARES THE LATEST FLOORING TRENDS
ARTICLE SARA WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
C
asey Dillabaugh, owner of Dillabaugh Flooring America and Design, began an informal apprenticeship to learn the flooring business at the age of 13. “My dad started the business and he decided that when I turned 13, I would start up,” explains Dillabaugh. “My first jobs were with the commercial installation crews at Caldwell and Skyview high schools. My dad would have a couple commercial installers pick
me up at 7:30 a.m. and take me to start scraping and prepping floors. While my friends were out having fun all summer, I was miserable,” laughs Dillabaugh. As Dillabaugh entered high school, his dad gave him the chance to work in every department in the company, but Dillabaugh was not convinced that the flooring business would become his career. Dillabaugh has since decided there must have been a higher plan. “We proudly proclaim that we are a Christian company,” notes Dillabaugh, “The Lord kept tugging at me saying, ‘Casey come home.’” After receiving his college degree in California, Dillabaugh eventually returned to his Idaho and flooring roots. He worked in sales gradually taking on more and more responsibilities. In January, Dillabaugh took over the company. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT SEPARATES DILLABAUGH FLOORING FROM OTHER FLOORING COMPANIES?

“It’s the experience. You will notice a difference when you walk into Dillabaugh’s and how our sales professionals truly care about you. We are so blessed to have the team that we do. One other thing that really separates us is the ability to do it all. Not only do we do flooring in the home, we also have a commercial division, and a hardwood sand and seal division for re-sanding floors. In addition, we also fabricate our own granite. We even do cabinetry. If a client is looking to renovate a kitchen or a bathroom they don’t have to hire a remodeler. They can come to us and essentially cut out the middle man.” WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR A HOME THAT HAS BEEN THROUGH FLOODING OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF DISASTER?
“We are quite proud of our insurance division. We have two guys and a special gal that spend their time solely dedicated to those who suffer water and fire damage.”
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN FLOORING?
“On a national level, the trend has moved to hard surface. Whether that be hardwood, laminate flooring or a vinyl type product. But there are new technologies in flooring that have made carpet exciting. For instance SmartStrand silk is the softest carpet that has ever been felt. This carpet has such great stain resistance that you can poor bleach on it and it won’t affect the color.”
wood that has a finish in the factory. Many people are moving towards the prefinished wood. If you want a rustic looking floor you want the prefinished wood. It’s getting more and more affordable. Product is probably 15 percent cheaper than it was five years ago because there is more competition among the mills. Laminate flooring has a wood look. It’s very good for active households. It won’t scratch and generally it won’t dent as easily. Luxury vinyl tile has the look of wood and a lot of the same characteristics as laminate only it’s waterproof. It’s a little bit more expensive because it hasn’t been on the market as long. It’s probably the hottest product on the market right now. It’s easy to install so there are a lot of DIYers using the product.”
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT THUS FAR?
OF CHOOSING CARPET
“We have sales professionals and installers that have been with us for 20-plus years. We take great pride in our work. In our regular training sessions, I always ask our staff ‘What do you guys sell?’ We don’t sell f looring. We sell an experience.” People can buy f looring any where. The prices are very similar. We want our clients to know that their best interest is our interest. That’s what our sales professionals take great pride in. Your sales professional will be with you through every step of the process.” “When we get clients to share photos of their completed projects whether it’s on Houzz or Facebook, it is so rewarding because our goal is to exceed our clients’ expectations and help transform their house into a home.”
FLOORING?
“Carpet provides comfortable living that hard Casey Dillabaugh, owner of Dillabaugh surfaces can’t provide. Flooring America and Design Tech advances keep carpet lasting newer longer. Carpet mills have realized that in order to survive they’ve had to up their game to compete with hard surfaces. We are the beneficiaries of that competition.” CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE TRENDS IN HARD FLOOR SURFACES?
“There are two categories of hardwood. Sand and seal site finish, where we install on-site and prefinished

Boise’s Newest Bridal Boutique Offers Custom Designed Wedding Dresses 22
Boise Lifestyle | May 2015
hen Deb Spoja was in her 20s and all her friends were going off to Seattle, Portland or San Francisco to buy their wedding dresses, she thought about opening a bridal shop in Boise. Instead, she fell in love and got married herself. After raising four kids and helping her husband get through medical school and become an Army doctor in Texas, she finally got her chance. “When he was deployed to Afghanistan I came back home,” says Spoja. “I wanted my kids to go to Boise High like I did.” After her husband left the Army, she decided it was time to put her degree in business and financial marketing to use. “I felt like Boise really needed a high-end bridal boutique that could offer people the opportunity to purchase the same designs and get the same experience that bigger cities offer.” Not long after, she met Daci Johnson. You could say fate had a hand in it. “It turns out my son had been going to school with Daci’s daughter since junior high,” Spoja says with a laugh, “When they were sophomores he asked her to the homecoming dance. When I saw the dress Daci made for her I was in awe. Then I saw the amazing wedding dresses she was making out of her home and I knew this would be a perfect partnership.”
In July 2014, the huge bank of windows in the Alaska Building along Main Street suddenly came alive with a blizzard of white lace and linen. LaNeige was open for business. The name literally means “the snow” in French, and it speaks volumes about what goes on inside Boise’s newest bridal shop. “Business has been really good,” says Spoja. “People are talking to their friends, and our staff has done an incredible job earning us a reputation for amazing customer service. And it doesn’t hurt that we have one of the best European designers in the world right here in our store.” Deb and Daci travel to the same markets that store owners from bigger cities do, and they bring back the same fashions to Boise. In addition to Daci’s own line of custom dresses, LaNeige features well-known designers like the popular Spanish line, Pronovias, CB Coture and Casablanca, one of the top U.S. companies. “We bring in new dresses every six months, which matches the pattern most designers follow," says Spoja. "With all the wedding shows on TV these days, brides are getting more educated on what’s out there, and becoming more fashion forward in their choices. Daci’s designs definitely have more of a European flair, and because of her family ties she’s normally designing the same things Paris has going on.” “Bridal shops can be intimidating,” adds Johnson. “but our bridal consultants are very good at making customers feel comfortable when they come in for an appointment. This is a big decision, and it helps if they have someone with 20 years of experience taking care of them. And, of course, we bring out some champagne.” Bottom line, why spend all that money traveling back and forth to other cities to find the perfect dress when, chances are, LaNeige has it right here in downtown Boise. And if you don’t find something just right, Daci can create the perfect one-of-a-kind snowflake of a dress just for you.

DACI JOHNSON: A TOUCH OF TRANSYLVANIA Daci Johnson grew up around lots of old buildings and history. Romania is like that. And Cluj, in the province of Transylvania, has its own special charm. Both she and her sister went to an arts high school. “I didn’t know what kind of art I wanted to do,” says Johnson, “so I did everything.” At Ione Andreescu Arts University she specialized in fashion design. She and her sister used to have contests to see who could draw the prettiest dresses. Daci’s sketches caught the eye of more than one friend who asked her to design their wedding dress. “A wedding dress is mostly white,” Johnson says with a smile, “but there are so many fabrics and textures and laces and shades of white, so you can be really creative. And I do love everything about weddings.” After she finished school, a local bridal shop asked if they could feature her dresses, and she quickly became their instore designer. Then she fell in love with a smoke jumper from Idaho, and everything changed. They were married, and she moved to Boise, where she continued designing out of her home until that fateful day when her daughter got an invitation to the high school homecoming dance. (see article) Now her dresses adorn the mannequins at LaNeige. Gowns by Daci is her own bridal collection, but she also helps select the other designers the shop features. And she travels home to Europe every year to stay current on the markets there. When a bride-to-be chooses a custom dress by Daci, they fill out a form that helps her decide if she can take on the project. Designing and creating a custom gown is a long process. “If a bride wants something completely new and different then I need about 12 months,” Daci explains. “We get together and talk about what kind of look they want, and I bring out lots of fabric samples. Then I need about a week to do some sketches. Once we start to make the dress we have three to four fittings, the last one about a month before the wedding.” Daci’s gowns usually average between $3,500 and $4,500. Some of the other designers they have in the shop start as low as $1,000 to $2,000, and some are more expensive, but brides who choose to have Daci design their dress will have a true work of art from a European designer, without ever leaving Boise. Hamsters Help Out LOCAL YOUTH BAND LEADS THE WAY IN HELPING OTHERS ARTICLE MICHELLE WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY JEN SCHOW
A
s residents of the Treasure Valley, we pride ourselves on being a community where people are not afraid to pitch in and help out. The Runaway Hamsters, a local music group does exactly that. The group comprised of four siblings— 10-year-old Isabella and 9-year-old triplets Gabby, Abby and Riley Keen—started as a band to raise money for a friend who was being treated for cancer. Together they produced a CD and sold it at local stores making nearly $1,800. The Hamsters didn’t hesitate to get involved. “They saw up close how life can deal difficult circumstances to undeserving people. Their hearts opened and they started helping,” says Barb Keen, mother and manager of the sibling group. Barb explains that they were amazed at how their decision to pitch-in sparked the desire in others to get involved. “One of the most overwhelming realizations for us was how many people around this country actually care” explains Barb. “When our efforts around helping our buddy Matt got some attention, calls came in from all over the country. People with no connection to

Boise or us have made donations and offered to help. You never know what your small action might do to spur on others.” That was just the start of what is becoming an adventure for The Runaway Hamsters. “We have been enjoying this musical, helping journey and can’t wait to see where it goes” says Keen. The Hamsters continue to keep busy showcasing their talent and helping others. Since the release of their original single, “Runaway,” the young rockers have continued to give to the community through their music. They partnered with St. Luke’s Hospital and local radio station 107.9 Lite FM to raise nearly $20,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network. Most recently, they opened at the Boise State University dance FTK marathon fundraiser helping to raise $65,000. As a follow-up to their first single, The Hamsters are currently finalizing and preparing for the release of their six-song album Hamsters in the House. It will be available
for presale on their website and through iTunes this month. They have also created two music videos and just finished working on a third in April with major producer Roman White in Nashville. “All of it has been an adventure. We have connected with a magical animation studio and they are now lending their creative talents,” says Barb. “Every step has been fun and educational.” Our producer has big ideas about next steps and some very creative people are involved. We are enjoying the ride and ready for the adventure.” Barbara Keen has some advice for those who want to get involved but may feel hesitant. “First of all, helping others is always a positive when you do it from your heart. Others may not understand, but if your heart says help, help” advises Barb. “For parents, I would just say let your heart be your guide. Don’t worry about what others think, just do what you feel is best and encourage your kids the same way. There is much good inside us if we are not afraid to let it out." The Runaway Hamsters exemplify people allowing the good inside them to come out and impact the community in a positive way. Follow their lead. Get out there and help others and you too can make a difference. If you have not yet listened to the Hamsters in your house, check out their music videos and watch for the new album Hamsters in the House by visiting their website TheRunAwayHamsters.com or connecting with them via Facebook and Twitter.

emorial Day began as Decoration Day in 1868 to remember Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. Today, on Memorial Day, we honor all Americans who died while serving in the military. Some of those honored served in Vietnam. One hundred years after the first Decoration Day, in early 1968, United States Marines at the Khe Sanh fire base were surrounded and besieged by a numerically superior North Vietnamese force. Over the 77-day siege, the marines were under constant rocket and artillery bombardment. All supplies and replacements were transported by air, and casualties went out the same way, even though the runway and aircraft landing on it were also under constant fire. On March 30, 1968, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines were ordered to attack enemy trench lines on the Khe Sanh perimeter. Bravo! Common Men, Uncommon Valor is a documentary film made by Ken and Betty Rodgers about Ken’s unit, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, during the siege at Khe Sahn and about the effects that experience had on them. Betty encouraged her husband Ken to make the film after they attended one of the yearly reunions of Khe Sahn Veterans. The film stands as a testament to the men of Bravo Company, with photos, after-action reports, and never before heard audio that brings the battle to life. Though Bravo! offers a glimpse into some of the bloodiest fighting of the Vietnam War, most memorable are the stories of the men of Bravo Company. As an article in Stars and Stripes states, “The film also provided some much-needed catharsis to the survivors from Bravo, many of whom opened up for the first time. ‘I don’t think anyone else could have [made the film],’ Marine Corporal Steve Wiese, now 66, told Stars and Stripes from his California home. For years, he suppressed his experiences and was reluc26

tant to tell his story. However, that changed when he sat across from the camera and Ken. ‘I carry major survivor’s guilt,’ Wiese said. ‘I don’t understand why I’m alive and others aren’t. I don’t understand why I’m here.’” In the film, Wiese describes how his unit was ambushed during a patrol and how it took him all day to retreat about 400 yards to the besieged American base. President Barack Obama proclaimed May 28, 2012, through November 11, 2025, as the Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. Obama writes, “We draw inspiration from the heroes who suffered unspeakably...who were wounded and still carry the scars of war, seen and unseen.” “We are excited about this film and how we can help folks learn more about the Vietnam War, the personal stories of the people who served, and its long-term costs in human terms,” says Ken. During production, Ken and Betty traveled across the United States conducting interviews. They also traveled to George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in California for post-production work. The film’s sound and film editing was done by Vietnam veteran John Nutt, who also worked on Apocalypse Now and Amadeus, and fourtime Oscar winner Mark Berger, who mixed the sound. Bravo! is a visceral experience depicting some of the events of the 77 day siege of Khe Sanh. The film was a finalist in the documentary category at the inaugural Idaho Media Awards, established by the Idaho Media Professionals IdahoMediaPro.com. Choosing the Best Caterer for Your Wedding TOP TIPS FOR DECIDING WHICH CATERER IS RIGHT FOR YOU ARTICLE LORIE NIES PETTIETTE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Y
our big day has come and gone. Your dress was fabulous, the officiator was funny, in just the right way, the flowers were beautiful, and the whole wedding day was everything you hoped it would be. The only thing you wished you had spent more time researching? The caterer. The chicken was rubbery, the mashed potatoes lumpy, and the green beans were ice cold. Unfortunately, wedding guests will remember the food, almost as much as they will remember the wedding itself. So how do you go about hiring the best caterer? What questions should you ask and what should you expect when you retain a caterer? Michael Tapia, co-owner and founder of the restaurant Kindness at the Owyhee, suggests a number of tips to help you get the best caterer for your event. BUDGET
Before contacting a caterer have a clear understanding of how much you are prepared to spend. Matching your expectations with your budget will go a long way in getting you what you want. Ask yourself how many people you plan to invite. Do you intend to have a bridal luncheon, heavy hors d’oeuvres in the afternoon, or a fully plated and served sit down dinner? The luncheon may be a less expensive way to go. The heavy hors d’oeuvres, because of the labor to make them, could be more expensive than you would think. Of course the sit down dinner would be the most expensive. The kind of entrée you choose, will also greatly impact cost. A filet mignon will be much pricier than almost any chicken dish. If 28

you definitely want a sit down lunch or dinner, consider having a buffet. It will cut your price because you won’t be paying for wait staff. CHOOSING A CATERER
Tapia, a 20-year catering veteran, suggests that you consider using a wedding planner. “Your wedding maybe the biggest party you ever throw,” explains Tapia. “Planning a wedding is a vocation. You want to find a wedding planner that will be an advocate for you.” You can Google wedding planners in Boise. Wedding planners usually have a list of caterers that they have worked with and whom they trust. Whether or not you use a wedding planner, you will still need to interview caterers. If you have already chosen a reception location, talk to the venue about what caterers they recommend. Ask if you get a cost reduction on the room, if you use the venue’s restaurant or caterer. Choose two or three caterers to interview. Make sure you are comfortable with the caterer. Let them know if you have any specific dietary requirements, and ask to have a tasting of two of the entrees that you are considering. Usually caterers will offer a complimentary tasting
CONSIDER KINDNESS FOR YOUR NEXT NIGHT OUT
for up to four people. You can ask for a more custom tasting with a number of different food items, but be prepared to pay for it. Remember each caterer will have a base catering menu. Selecting your entrees from this menu is usually the most economical option. Anything that you request that is not on the base menu is considered custom, therefore more labor intensive and more expensive. Also, remember to book your caterer early. The best caterers will be booked well in advance, especially during the high season of weddings, May-September.
Kindness is a locally owned and operated restaurant and catering company located in the Owyhee in downtown Boise. The restaurant is known for their “new American comfort food” especially slow-cooked braised meats. Owyhee Ballrooms by Kindness seats 300 for dinner, and up to 500 for cocktails. Owyhee Penthouse by Kindness is a rooftop terrace with beautiful views of Boise that is open in the summer for cocktails and appetizers. Open seven days a week, including for Sunday Brunch, consider Kindness for your next get together. For more information, call Kindness at the Owyhee 208.629.7444 or stop in for a visit and delicious food at 1109 W. Main Street, Boise.
SIGNING THE CATERING CONTRACT
When signing a contract with a caterer be firm on the date you’ve chosen for your wedding. You will likely be asked to provide a deposit. Every caterer is different, but the closer you are to the date of the wedding when you either cancel or change the date, the more likely it is that you will not receive a refund. You can expect around a 20 percent service fee on the contract for wait staff and bartenders. Service fees will most likely be included in the final invoice. Go over the contract line by line to make sure you understand everything you are being charged for, and watch for hidden fees. Lorie Nies Pettiette is the owner of Nies Partners, a media relations firm with offices in Boise and Chicago.

Attorney, Advocate and Actvist TERRI PICKENS MANWEILER SHARES HER STORY ARTICLE PAMELA KLEIBRINK THOMPSON | PHOTOGRAPHY MATT GREEN
“M
y greatest professional passion is helping women and children,” states Terri Pickens Manweiler, managing partner of Pickens Law, P.A. Pickens Manweiler is a Hope Level Corporate Pillar for the Women's and Children's Alliance and a volunteer attorney for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). Pickens Manweiler's favorite achievement or accomplishment is being honored with the TWIN Award (Tribute to Women in Industry) by the Women's and Children's Alliance (WCA). She has a special connection to the children served by CASA and the WCA.
BUILDING A CASE FOR PROFESSIONALISM
Pickens Manweiler advocates for the advancement of women in the practice of law. When Pickens Manweiler first practiced law she encountered sexism from some attorneys and judges, but over time she has built a solid practice and a stellar reputation. “Practicing law changed for me over the years because I have gained the respect of many attorneys and judges," she says. "However, it hasn't changed insofar as I deal with attorneys who still judge me based on gender. I am not the only female attorney with this concern for the Idaho Bar. Being a female in this profession in Idaho is very difficult without thick skin and a fast wit. I do not appreciate being judged for my gender alone, which happens surprisingly often.” But she has hope for the future. “My mentee and paralegal, Shannon Pearson, who is now a third year law student at Concordia School of Law, has followed my lead in pursuing her passion to be in the court room and become a strong female attorney," says Pickens Manweiler. "She is doing a fantastic job as a licensed legal intern and will be a remarkable attorney.” A COURTSHIP WITH AN ATTORNEY
“The thrill of advocacy in the court room, the appreciation of a satisfied client, and the freedom the profession affords me to work to live rather than live to work, are what I like most about law," she says. Pickens Manweiler enjoys living in Boise and is passionate about her family which includes her children Maya, Parker, and stepdaughter Molly. She is happily married to Mark Manweiler, a successful and prominent criminal defense attorney in Boise, whom she met through an attorney friend. Her family also includes two dogs, Lucy and Angel, a pygmy goat named Ringo Star, two rabbits Sonny and Cher, and four cats Stella, Stud, Thelma and Louise. Pickens Manweiler shares some tips for others interested in law. "Stick with it. We all have bad days, we all win some and lose some. Our cases and clients do not define us. We define us. Show professionalism and respect and it will be returned to you...eventually.” Pickens Manweiler’s biggest challenge in practicing law is 30
Boise Lifestyle | May 2015
simply, “I do not like to lose. Ever. So every now and then, I don't get the outcome I was hoping for. Judges disagree with me or the law is interpreted differently than I expect. It is a tough pill to swallow. After this happens it is hard to reset and move forward, but I do. Move on to the next case or next big issue in law. I would say the biggest challenge often becomes the reason I am still doing this. I would ultimately like to go to the Federal Bench." GOALS AND INSPIRATION
“My goal is to be appointed as a Federal District Judge for the District of Idaho," states Pickens Manweiler. "Right now judge Edward Lodge is taking senior status on July 1, 2015. Senators Risch and Crapo are in the process of screening and soon will be interviewing potential candidates. I have submitted my Judicial Questionnaire for consideration. Once they create a short list they will interview the finalists and pick one or two to give to President Obama to make a formal nomination. Once nominated and after passing a background check, the full Senate has to approve the appointment. So a long process but I am staying positive!” “Maya Angelou is one person who inspires me," shares Pickens Manweiler. "She overcame the most difficult odds to become a voice of peace and reason. She was a true champion for women's and children's rights.” Pickens Manweiler is also inspired by “travel, world culture and creating a world that treats my daughter just like my son.” Pickens Law, P.A. Parting Thoughts
The Art of the R SVP WORDS LISA COOKE HARRISON
I
was, walking down the aisle on the arm of my tuxedo-clad father, beaming from ear to ear when it happened. I spotted a guest, a college friend standing tall above the rest at six and a half feet. But the problem was not my very tall college friend, nor the perfect organ music, flowing ivy and flowers or my Princess Diana-like dress. It was the woman standing NEXT to my college friend. You see, he had not included a ‘plus one’ on his RSVP. Hours had been spent putting the seating chart together for our sit-down dinner reception. Hours more had been spent on the menu. Still more hours had been spent on the calligraphy for the place cards. And here was a guest with no seat, no surf and turf dinner, and horror of horrors, no place card. She would KNOW her boyfriend hadn’t RSVP’d correctly. In fact, all of our college friends at the table of eight, which would magically need to be converted to a table of nine, would know that something was amiss. My mother would be appalled, but how to signal her that she needed to tell the reception manager? Surely I’d forget between now, the vows and the receiving line…. This is the memory I have of my walk down the aisle. You laugh, but as someone who was raised with basic but strict entertaining etiquette, this was a faux paus of grand proportions. And dare I say it’s not just weddings that matter when it comes to the art of the RSVP. 38
Boise Lifestyle | May 2015
Every few years, my beloved and I plan a party to coincide with a certain spring holiday, and every few years we work complicated math equations as we try to calculate what percentage of the ‘no calls’ will actually show up. How do you plan for food and drinks not knowing if you’ll have 45 or 65 guests? I love St. Patrick’s inspired appetizers as much as the next person, but certain foods just don’t make the best leftovers. And since I don’t drink beer or wine often, the thought of investing in cases of extra liquor just to be safe doesn’t appeal to my usual ‘stick it in the freezer, we’ll use it eventually’ sensibilities. Come on people, it’s really very simple. If you are invited to a party, no matter how casual, let them know if you plan to attend or if you have other plans. Don’t be the thorn in every host and hostess’ side and leave them wondering. If your social calendar is especially busy and you have another commitment, but you might stop by late, let them know. They won’t mind knowing you have multiple obligations for one night. And a Mr. and Mrs. ‘definite maybe’ are worth planning for when it comes to prosciutto wrapped asparagus and puffed potato pastries, much more so than Mr. and Mrs. ‘I have no idea because they don’t know the definition of RSVP.’ It’s French, for "the favor of your response is kindly requested."
