Don’t Be A Gaper! A
s ski resorts are now preparing to open, many of Colorado’s new transplants are eager to get out and enjoy all the incredible skiing and boarding that Colorado has to offer. While many new residents have been skiing for years, thousands will be hitting the hill for the first time. You may be asking yourself, “What is a gaper”? Although there is no official definition of the word in Webster’s Dictionary, a gaper could be described as someone who is in over their head, and / or is lacking on-mountain etiquette. I can speak first hand, because I was once a gaper myself. Even though they look warm, I found out quickly back in 1993, that Starter jackets were not meant for sub-zero temperatures. Just because you might be a beginner, doesn’t mean you have to be a gaper. Dressing for the elements will definitely bring much more enjoyment to your day on the mountain.]

OUTERWEAR
Like many adventure sports, you get what you pay for. If you go with the knock off brands, you are going to be in for a long, cold winter. Invest in the right gear from the start. While you might be on your rear for the first few months, at least you’ll be dry and warm. High quality outerwear (Patagonia, Arcteryx, Marmot) will be used for many seasons to come. I’ve been wearing the same Patagonia Capilene base layer for the last ten seasons. I pretty much live in it from mid-October until Mother’s Day. If you are on a budget, there are some killer deals at the local consignment stores around town. HELMETS
I’ll admit it, up until the late 90’s, early 2000’s, helmets on the mountain were still perceived as lame. Fortunately, the evolution of protecting our dome is now common sense. Buy a helmet folks. You will charge so much harder and be more confident once you do. Additionally, your head will never have felt so warm on a cold day.I love the Bern helmets; stylish, lightweight, and durable. GOGGLES
Once again, the technology of goggles has advanced light years over the last decade. Stay away from the amber lense Scott goggles that your dad bought in 1992. Having clear vision on the slopes is paramount. I suggest Zeal for the quality, and for the locally owned aspect The only thing better than a good day on the hill is a good Apres ski with friends and family. As a former bartender in Vail, I can say that gaper-ish behavior is not just limited to the trail. If you are the loudest guy at the bar, bragging about how many “double blacks” you skied, you are entering into gaper-ville. Be safe, have fun, and don’t be a gaper!

INNOVATIVE INTERIORS BLUBOX DELIVERS A NEW TWIST ON INTERIOR DESIGN ARTICLE CAMILLE WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY BERNARD ANDRÉ
H
ave you ever seen an absolutely stunning home and wished you could buy one of the rooms and everything in it?
This is the idea behind BLUBOX, an innovative interior
design service developed this past year by seasoned architects and designers from Mosaic Architects and Interiors. The service simplifies the interior design process for busy clients who enjoy nice things and have a style in mind but may not have the time to orchestrate the detailed project themselves. BLUBOX clients simply choose from five styles in the LookBook or create a custom order to fit their own style for different rooms within the home. The team then sources pieces from a variety of designers, craftsmen and artists—including many custom designs—to create beautiful, livable spaces. Delivery is simple. BLUBOX warehouses all of the furniture, fixtures and artwork and orchestrates a convenient, white-glove installation. Each piece is opened and inspected for damage in advance and stored until everything is ready rather than shipping to the client piece by piece. The team removes all the old items, donating to charity as appropriate, and places and installs the complete look all in one day. Jane Snyder, founding partner, describes all of the designs— Metropolitan, Fresh Thyme, Glam, Creative or Living Lightly—as comfortable and real. Each is based on a personality imagined by the team in order to focus the style. Fresh Thyme, for instance, has design accents in yellow and green and clean but comfortable lines throughout, a personality conjuring up images of someone enjoying a glass of chardonnay or strolling through the farmers’ market donning a straw hat. A recent client chose Fresh Thyme for this gorgeous highrise apartment. The living room features a custom painting by local artist Juliana Forbes, cream sectional, custom coffee table by local artist Brian Laak and chartreuse lounge chair and ottoman by B&B Italia. Snyder says access to BLUBOX’s custom artists—and the relatively inexpensive pricing due to existing relationships—is a major draw for their clients since many people do not know a furniture designer or painter who can do custom pieces for them. She says this customization gives spaces an authentic feeling. “Real living is truly eclectic, not matchy-matchy like in a magazine,” she said. “Our clients love that we make interior design fast and fun.”

S
itting in the bed of her truck, in a canyon in the Northwest, Sarah Nicholson paints the moun-
tains by lantern light as a misty rain falls around her. For company, she has her dog and her paintbrushes, and she manages to completely disconnect from her phone and work obligations while sleeping nights away in her truck before moving onto her next scenic destination. These are the types of trips Nicholson has taken to in the last couple of years, two weeks in seclusion to remove herself from the constant task-list that her freelance artistic career requires of her. “When I go on those trips ... it really gives me space to come back and be excited about what I do,” says Nicholson. Originally from Louisiana, Nicholson was hopelessly drawn west to the mountains and to the Boulder rock-climbing scene. “I moved here to climb,” says Nicholson. “Climbing is really important to my creative endeavors because climbing takes me to beautiful places. Into the mountains, into the wilderness, out in the trees, out in the forest, that’s where all of this develops for me,” explains Nicholson. “I just knew that it was more important to me to love the place where I lived and then, secondarily, find work.” Wasting no time, within three weeks of graduating college Nicholson followed her heart to Boulder, where she steadily built up her freelance business, Petite Press. Having been drawing since the age of three or four, her talent was discovered early on by an elementary art school teacher, and Nicholson found an affinity for the arts that would never leave her. “Art had always been such an important part of my life,” says Nicholson. “But I didn’t quite understand or realize that I could work as an artist until I started in school and I realized that there were ways to apply art to your career ... and that is still developing for me. Every week I feel like I realize CONTINUED >

a new thing I can do. I can take my passion and apply it to making a living as well.” Now a busy 28-year-old artist, Nicholson’s abilities range from illustration and painting to graphic design and letterpress. She even uses a 1,000-pound cast-iron letterpress from the early 1900s to create custom designs with a truly vintage feel. As one of the highlights of her professional career, Nicholson lights up as she recalls a life-changing opportunity with the Boulder Creative Collective. “I had put over 50 hours of work into this mural, I didn’t know how it was going to be received ... no one knew who I was, and so I got to really see people’s reactions to it,” says Nicholson. “Putting your art out into the world at times can feel selfish; I feel insecure about it at times. Having that experience where so many people were positive and kind and genuinely happy for me even though they didn’t know me until that moment—it felt amazing.” Nicholson stands out as one of the lucky few to not only have found her passion in life but to have turned that joy into a fulfilling, life-long career. “It’s a very important outlet for me,” says Nicholson of art. “It is therapy and meditative. When I am having a strong emotion, it feels really good to draw something, and it really allows me to release something that I don’t know how else I would be able to release it. I tell people all the item I’m incredibly, incredibly grateful to have a passion like this because I think it’s something I can do for a very long time.” Petite Press | @petite.press

THERE WITH CARE An organization that provides support to hundreds of families being treated at numerous hospitals and medical facilities in the Boulder and Denver areas, There With Care works within local communities to relieve major stresses of families during trying times. It starts by offering an expansive scope of attentive and fundamental services to children and families during medical crises to shoulder some of life’s wearing day-today obligations. Mom Nichol can’t even remember how she first connected with There with Care; it’s been a nine-year relationship. One of her daughters, Zaida, diagnosed with a rare cancer at the age of three, has had years of chemo, multiple 12+ hour surgeries, scans, blood draws, radiation and relapses. Nichol says, “They brought us holiday meals early on and gas gift cards, and they bought all of us Christmas gifts that first year! It was wonderful, especially when we could barely keep up with anything, let alone cooking and Christmas shopping.” The family is heading to New York soon to start Zaida on a new type of targeted therapy.
“Having a kid with a chronic illness is really time-consuming, exhausting and expensive! All the things they do, help save us time we then get to spend with the kids and save us money we otherwise wouldn't have to spend on the kids, medical care and necessary travel.” - Nichol
“Now, they are bringing groceries every couple weeks and have given the kids shoes and school supplies. When my car broke down this summer, they helped pay for the repairs. That was a lifesaver!” ThereWithCare.org GoFundMe.com/zaidamattson

GROWING GARDENS Growing Gardens’ vision is “people experiencing a direct and deep connection with food, the land and each other.” The Cultiva Youth Project, a
youth-operated
organic
farm, offers a younger generation the opportunity to give back while ripening leadership and job skills and absorbing organic gardening education. Sisters Eva and Karina grew up near Growing Gardens, so becoming involved in Cultiva was a natural step during high school summer breaks. Both sisters felt quiet and timid at first but noticed an arch of growth during their time there. Eva says of her time at Growing Gardens, “I’ve seen many other people that I have worked with grow out of being shy and awkward as I have.”
"The biggest advantage I have gained from Growing Gardens is the ability to be a leader and collaborator in all aspects of my life.” -Karina
Karina acknowledges,
“I have been much more involved in my community—by trying to immerse myself in the community—to be able to have a voice within Boulder.” -Eva
“I learned about how to have a job, how to communicate with a boss and how to work with peers to complete a task. The skills that I acquired have stayed with me to this day and have benefited me in all aspects
of my life, from school and my current job, to my ability to take on leadership roles and understand how important it is to make a difference in my community.” GrowingGardens.org

hree hours of hiking followed by a playful line through a gladded, 37-degree pitch on
the north aspect of Snodgrass Mountain had me feeling energized and confident. It was a self-assurance I wasn’t sure I’d find on this ski trip; I’d been so intimidated coming in. We put our skins back on and began hiking up the same slope of perfectly spaced trees, ready for another lap. It was day two of my first-ever guided ski trip, and I was feeling good. Four days earlier, I was sitting on my bed at home in Boulder, Colorado, and nervously laughing at the email from my future ski guide. “Next order of business is the renaming of this camp,” Evan’s quick, introductory note to the group read. “Powder can sometimes be a mystical/elusive creature in Colorado and that will be the case next week. We will seek out powder, but along the way, we'll ski every kind of snow surface in-between ... the first new name I'm coming up with is Shred Camp.” The name change was welcomed. I was ready for the Irwin Guides Backcountry Powder Camp, or Shred Camp. Or whatever My mission: find out what guided skiing is all about. A 25-year-old, Colorado girl, born and raised, skiing since age two, and I had never officially been guided skiing. From following my family’s meditated turns at a young age to evolving into a casual backcountry skier with a budget. A guided trip had never seemed like an option. It wasn’t until I caught wind of Irwin Guides’ Backcountry Powder Camp, consisting of five days of exploratory, off-piste ski missions in the Elk Mountains that surround Crested Butte, that I realized how accessible a guided ski trip could be. As we met at the Irwin Guide’s headquarters in downtown Crested Butte on day one, I learned I’d be the only woman and the youngest person in our group. This gender dynamic was nothing new for me, but it added to my trepidation nonetheless. We were encouraged to pack our pockets with high-end energy bars made up of things like unicorn dust, lentils and natural sugars, while we introduced ourselves and discussed what we each yearned to get out of the camp. I was prepared to meet skiers from far and wide but was happily thrown CONTINUED >

HIGH TAKING CLIMBING TO NEW HEIGHTS ON ICE. ARTICLE MEG SIMON | PHOTOGRAPHY BRENDON WILSON
F
or many rock climbing Coloradans, ice climbing is a way to extend the rock climbing season and experience climbing outdoors with a different set of challenges. There are a wide variety of
ice climbing spots in Colorado, from beginner routes in man-made Ouray Ice Park to much more remote and committing climbs in Rocky Mountain National Park. For this feature, we researched different locations throughout Colorado and talked with Lee Pruitt, employee at Fjallraven’s Boulder location and ice climbing enthusiast, to get some advice on how to begin ice climbing.
70
Boulder Lifestyle | November 2016
WHERE TO START There are a lot of ways to try ice climbing for the first time, while easing the intimidation of venturing into this novel and extreme sport, more than anything, having a background in basic rock climbing skills is essential. Many of the techniques used in regular rock climbing are also used in ice climbing, and feeling comfortable with things like tying in, belaying, lead climbing and abseiling (or rappelling) can go a long way in making one’s first time ice climbing enjoyably challenging instead of frustrating. Pruitt recommends going with someone who has a decent amount of ice climbing experience for your first time, so they can provide guidance in getting started with the sport. When we talked to Pruitt, he also emphasized how influential smart layering can be on one’s first ice climbing experience. “I always recommend wearing multiple layers of synthetic or wool clothing,” Pruitt explains. “Having multiple layers of clothing allows you to adapt to the temperature, weather and level of physical exertion.” Staying warm while climbing can mean the difference between a great day outdoors or a miserable experience.

HIGH ALPINE (CON TI N UED)
WHERE TO GO For those not already inducted in the ice climbing world, it may seem like it would be difficult to find a good location. Though there is a history in the sport of keeping local spots a secret, the culture has been changing recently, especially with websites like Mountain Project, which provide climbers with an index of routes. The site has an entire database dedicated to ice and mixed climbing (climbs including rock, snow and ice) in Colorado and is helping to foster an attitude of prioritizing getting more people out climbing over keeping spots on the down-low. Here’s a list of some of the best places for ice climbing in Colorado, compiled with the help of Mountain Project and Lee Pruitt.
OURAY ICE PARK While a decent drive from Denver, Ouray Ice Park is a worthwhile place to venture for those just entering the sport. Man-made through the process of “ice farming,” Pruitt describes the park as “essentially an outdoor climbing gym.” The park has been in operation for twenty years and, in that time, has become a world-renowned ice climbing location. The park is completely open to public use throughout the season, free of cost, and is incredibly accessible with almost all of the 200 climbs the park offers within a 15-minute walk from its entrance. Ouray Ice Park is maintained by a small staff and a number of dedicated local volunteers who commit to transforming the Uncompahgre Gorge into a winter wonderland every year.
LAKE CITY ICE PARK A smaller, man-made, outdoor ice park, Lake City is yet another great option for beginner climbers. While this park is a lot less showy than Ouray, with only 10–15 climbs, it’s humility is also its strength. Easy parking without the crowds and completely free, this park is loved by many. Lake City is about the same driving distance from Denver as Ouray, but again, the park is worth the drive.
CLEAR CREEK CANYON Only a half-hour to an hour from Denver, Clear Creek Canyon is frequented by Denverites looking for ice. The area has a few different climbs, some of which form consistently every year in the upper canyon, and some of which form more intermittently lower down. The area is unique in that all of the climbs except for those near the aqueduct are formed by the natural drainage patterns that feed Clear Creek.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK While the park offers a few easier climbs, Rocky Mountain National Park is known for its difficult routes. For those preparing for long, remote climbs in other parts of the world, this is an excellent spot to practice. The park’s long and challenging routes combined with long approaches, mixed climbing (snow, rock and ice), somewhat harsh weather, altitude and areas of little protection make the area a great place to improve not just as an ice climber, but as an all-around mountaineer. So go out there this winter and have as much fun as possible. A last word of advice from Pruitt:
“Maybe most of all, climbing is a way to explore beautiful places, exercise outside and share challenging endeavors with friends.” Happy winter, everyone! 72

WARM CLOTHES AND MULTIPLE LAYERS OF CLOTHING The key to being comfortable is staying dry and warm. • WARM, GOOD-FITTING BOOTS — I mostly wear my La Sportiva Batura 2.0 boots • WOOL SOCKS — I usually wear just one pair. If it is going to be really cold, I will wear a thin liner sock under my wool socks. • TWO HATS, NECK WARMER, GAUNTLET GLOVES AND BIG BELAY MITTENS. • LAYER, LAYER, LAYER — Avoid cotton clothing. I really like merino wool. I wear a combination of synthetic and wool layers. Remember the base layer, mid layer and shell.

ere’s the thing about Colorado: There’s endless beauty behind every peak and roughly four different types of
scenery around this large state making it the ideal wedding destination. We have a little taste of everything. Aspens you say? We got it. Desert? Just head down south. So when Coloradans decide to branch outside of this picturesque state for a wedding, there’s one place that can’t compete. Down in Mexico. That’s where Bre & Paul Morris decided to say, “I do.” To be more specific, San José del Cabo. “We chose Mexico after realizing what really mattered to us: spending time and celebrating with the people that we are closest with in more than just one crazy wedding day,” says Bre. “So, therefore, we forced everyone to a different country, where we all got to spend a week together around the pool, at the beach and on the organic farm!” Brie and Paul’s friends and family, hailing mostly from Colorado and Montana, made their way to the Baja coast. With two professional local photographers in tow, Kelsey Huffer of Poppies + Paisley Photography and Ali Vagnini of Alison Vagnini Weddings, the weekend was captured through the lenses of two different viewpoints expressing the same story. A lot of love.

PART L The Welcome Dinner The host for the weekend was the sophisticated, all-villa resort, Cabo Azul Resorts (by Diamond Resorts). From the first arrival, there were world-class services paired with an all-white, natural stone building with chic décor. And with any festivity, Cabo Azul knows the best way to get a party started is with food and drinks. The wedding celebration was set off with a bang at Javier’s Restaurant (conveniently at the resort). Finally, the landlocked state of Colorado gets a taste of Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood. Squid, scallops and shrimp were all artfully arranged on skewers and paired with jalapeno-cucumber margaritas. The beverages set off hilarious and heartfelt toasts from the wedding party. One after the other party goers and guests cheered to the soon-to-be newlyweds. The night wrapped up with a “¡Salud!"

PART LL Getting Ready & the Floral Fiasco Typically, with a wedding day, there’s a level of chaos. For this wedding, that was not the case. By this time the hosts at Cabo Azul Resorts had already known all of the guests' names, and they made sure it was as stress-free and relaxing as possible. The morning started at the Paz Spa where the wedding party, Bre, her sisters and

mom got a chance to unwind. “Paz” means “peace” in Spanish and Alison Vagnini Weddings
that summarizes the services received. While relaxing, everyone came to realize a not-so-tiny detailed not planned in advance. Flowers. There simply can’t be a wedding without flowers or a bride without blooms. Fortunately, Lara DeBroux, of Fiori Flowers in Boulder, put her skills to work and found exotic flowers while foraging out in the Mexican desert. “Lara with Fiori flowers was an absolute gem! She is one of the most talented women I know. She rented a jeep to go into the desert and chop down flowers to add to our bouquets, tables and our altar,” says Bre. “Her work was breathtakingly beautiful, and her creativity (and dance moves) are something we will forever be grateful for!” Lara’s no newbie to the flower scene. She’s owned Fiori Flowers for the past 10 years and first “bloomed” as a florist thirteen years ago post-college. “I love the creativity of pulling together different textures and colors, working in such a hands-on environment as well as pushing the boundaries of the norm to create something different and beautiful,” mentions DeBroux. After a crisis was avoided, the real party began.

PART LLL The Nuptials In typical Boulder fashion, the wedding was held at the beautiful organic farm known as Huerta Los Tamarindos. Dating back to the 19th century and just a stone's throw away from the Sea of Cortez, the historic hacienda includes an event space decorated with natural elements. The foyer is draped with grapes and greenery, banana trees and palms stand tall around the event space and mature mango trees greet guests. “We loved that Mexico is not nearly as strict as the U.S. and we were able to create our dream wedding. The owner of Los Tamarindo (Enrique) let us dance the night away until 3 a.m. He said there was no limit to enjoying our wedding

day at the farm, and we could take over and dance until the sun came up if we wanted! We were actually cutting it close!” Says Bre. “From the unforgettable host hotel—Cabo Azul,—with infinity pools, perfectly decorated rooms, beach views, delicious food and drink to the day we spent foraging for flowers in the Cabo desert and shopping for local Mexican pottery to the hilarious and heartfelt toasts at the welcome party to the pounds of tortilla chips and guacamole we consumed to the sun setting at the perfect moment during the wedding ceremony to the beautiful dinner reception under the mango tree to the absolutely unforgettable dance party ... there were so many highlights and memories we'll cherish forever,” says event planner and friend Jolene Peterson. Reflecting back on such an amazing and love-filled weekend, Bre had one last thing to mention: “I truly mean it when I say it was the BEST day of my life, and I want to relive the day over and over and over again!” What more could you ask for?

FLORAL FORAGING WITH FIORI FLOWERS WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE LOOK?
My inspiration was drawn from the laid back and happy vibe of the couple as well as the location of beautiful Mexico. I wanted to f lowers to feel fun, sassy, inviting and warm. How did you go about achieving it?
By collecting local f lora and scrounging the marts for eclectic local vessels. Achieving this look felt natural and came to fruition beautifully. Where did you go to forage the flowers?
We headed out in our rented jeep, my husband driving, with two photographers and a wedding planner in tow, we drove around the mountains and the dessert, exploring and pulling over to collect and foraging as necessary. There we definitely some sketchy moments, standing over a hill with and endless drop below, reaching to cut the perfect little hot pink f lower, or standing on the roof of the jeep to reach the highest branch, but it was such a fun, adventurous and well-worth-it experience! 86

his is definitely the easiest and best way to make rich-tasting butternut squash soup, without having to peel and dice a large,
awkwardly shaped vegetable. You start by cutting the squash in half lengthwise and roasting it in a hot oven. Scrape the roasted flesh from the skin, and simmer it with sautéed yellow onion, fresh sage and a tart Granny Smith apple. When everything’s soft and the flavors have melded, purée it all in the blender. Finally, enrich the soup with a bit of heavy cream. • 4 pounds whole butternut squash (about 2 medium), halved lengthwise and seeds removed • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/4 stick) • 1 medium Granny Smith apple (about 8 ounces) • 1/2 medium yellow onion • 8 fresh sage leaves • 2-1/2 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth • 2-1/2 cups water • 1-1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more as needed • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more as needed • 1/3 cup heavy cream • 1/2 cup toasted pumpkin seeds, for garnish (optional) 1. Heat the oven to 425°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the squash pieces cut-side up on the baking sheet. Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter and brush all of it over the tops and insides of the squash halves (alternatively, you can rub it on evenly with your fingers). Season generously with salt and pepper. Roast until knife tender, 50 minutes to 1 hour. 2. Meanwhile, peel, core and cut the apple into medium dice. Cut the onion into medium dice. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in a large saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the apple, onion and sage, season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 7 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. 3. When the squash is ready, set the baking sheet on a wire rack until the squash is cool enough to handle. Using a large spoon, scoop the flesh into the saucepan with the sautéed apples and onions; discard the skins. 4. Add the broth, water and measured salt and pepper, stir to combine, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally and breaking up any large pieces of squash, until the flavors meld, about 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cream. 5. Using a blender, purée the soup in batches until smooth, removing the small cap (the pour lid) from the blender lid and covering the space with a kitchen towel (this allows steam to escape and prevents the blender lid from popping off ). Alternatively, use an immersion blender. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve garnished with the pumpkin seeds if using. November 2016 | Boulder Lifestyle
