What makes a home isn’t necessarily the items in that home, but more importantly, the feeling you create within the walls. Harvey Hine gave his clients some great advice when designing their home (see on pg. 52). When the couple wanted to add an extra room on the home, he said, “small homes tend to create close families.” As a child, my parents rarely spent money on cosmetic accents for our home. My mom, however, could bargain shop like nobody’s business. She found an original Knoll chair at the thrift store and only purchased it because she thought it was pretty. In a way, we are all connected to each other by design, and to the past, through the objects in our home. On pg. 50 you can read a little about the history of Harry Bertoia and how the Bertoia chair has not lost it’s popularity since it’s inception in 1952!. While I certainly did not grow up in a lavishly designed home, I grew up in a beautifully loving home. Yes, I love and respect all that involves home design. At the end of the day, what truly matters in our home is the joy and love that resides within.

She has let us in on her #designdecoded blog series, in which she dissects iconic objects in design history. This month we’re taking a look at Harry Bertoia and his gorgeous wire chairs. Bertoia was born in Italy in 1915, moved to America as a teenager, and eventually attended Cranbrook Academy where he rubbed elbows with other soon-to-be design bigwigs such as Charles Eames (fiberglass chairs!) and Eero Saarinen (tulip tables!). Cranbrook was kind of a big deal at the time. After finishing his studies he was asked to stay and spearhead the metal workshop, where he made mostly jewelry (metal was scarce during the War). Then he headed over to California with Eames to develop an inexpensive method for molding all those plywood chairs Eames was so crazy about. Unfortunately, Eames pulled a fast one on him when the chairs were finally produced and gave Bertoia zero credit. What! Miffed, Bertoia exchanged the West coast for the East and settled in at Knoll (another

important name, in furniture production). The Knolls knew Bertoia was brilliant, and basically told him he could come design whatever he wanted—it didn’t even have to be furniture! They just wanted to see what he could come up with. Bertoia’s line of wire chairs was launched in 1952, and has been in continuous production ever since. Seriously. People haven’t stopped buying these chairs once in the past 60 years! Can you imagine if your sofa was so popular, people were still buying it in 2078? That, my friends, is what they call timeless Okay, okay. What’s the big deal about these chairs? Well for starters, the materials were pretty groundbreaking. Wire mesh chairs don’t seem crazy to us because they’ve been around for half a century, but in Bertoia’s time most chairs were still made of—you guessed it—wood. Yawn. Also, Bertoia’s chairs are sculptural works of art (And guess what? He was a sculptor. Surprise, surprise). He took industrial materials and made them both elegant and beautiful, which is certainly a feat worthy of admiration.

The family moved into the home in the spring of 2012 and began construction the next fall with the main goal to improve the flow of the spaces inside and outside, and to enhance the family living. While the family also envisioned adding more rooms, Harvey Hine, the founding partner and managing principal at HMH, suggested focusing on multi-function rooms instead. For example, the homeowners created two sitting areas in the larger living room and the guest room doubles as a music room. Plus, Hine says small houses tend to create close families. “Additionally, we chose not to have a formal dining room,” the homeowner says. “Our life happens at the kitchen table instead.” In the end, the house feels finished with a centrally located living space where the family spends most of their time. The kitchen, family room, and multi-purpose rooms stay organized with specific design strategies, like a gear storage room on the lower level to keep outdoor equipment in its own space. AmongTheColors.com Serves 4 • 1 cup arborio rice • 3 cups broth (vegetable or chicken) • 2 beets, peeled and diced. • 1 red onion, peeled and diced. • 4 ounces of goat cheese chevre • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar • 1 tablespoon ghee In a large pot, heat up ghee and onions at medium heat for 7 minutes. Stir occasionally. Add in the beets and balsamic vinegar and cover for another seven minutes. Place the rice in the pot and stir for one minute. Now add in all three cups of broth and bring to a boil. Once the rice is at a boil, reduce to simmer and cover. Simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occassionally. Once rice is cooked, removed from heat. Add goat cheese on top before serving. Serve with salt and pepper to taste. For a twist, cook two pieces of crumbled bacon in a pan with the beet greens. Garnish on top of the goat cheese for a salty, savory note.

POLLINATE YOU COCKTAIL OR MOCKTAIL WITH THESE TWO DIY TECHNIQUES

1. Muddle flowers or herbs to release their fragrance. Place the stemless flowers and any herbs you’re using in the bottom of a cocktail shaker or tall glass with a splash of water (and sugar, if you’d like). Using a muddler or wooden spoon, press down on the flowers and herbs and give a few gentle twists until you start to smell their fragrance. Then, mix in the rest of the drink's ingredients and, if desired, strain the liquid into a serving glass. 2. Make a simple syrup with the flowers. Mix equal parts sugar and water in a sauce pan until the sugar melts. Turn off the heat, add the flowers, let the mixture cool for at least an hour, then strain the liquid. The simple syrup works like honey to sweeten the alcohol of your choice, from vodka to gin. March 24th is national cocktail day. DIY LEATHER DOOR WEDGE

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED.

• A piece of wood, about 1.5″ wide & 6.5″ long • White paint (preferably high gloss) • Minwax Polycrylic (again, gloss) • Whatever kind of saw you have on hand • Drill • Leather strip, about .5″ wide & 5″ long • #6 brass finishing washer • #6 3/4 in. brass phillips flat head wood screw • Sander or sandpaper • Paintbrushes, pencil, ruler First, use your pencil and ruler to draw a straight line diagonally across the wood. Saw along the line and sand to a smooth finish. Here’s a tip: if you have a longer length of wood, it’s easier to mark the 6.5″ length and saw the diagonal line before cutting it off the larger piece. Otherwise, you might need a clamp so you don’t saw your fingers off. Use the ruler to mark off a section at the bottom of the wedge and paint it white. Then use the polycrylic to coat the unpainted wood. Do NOT use the polycrylic on the white paint — it will yellow it. Take your leather strip and fold it in half, so that the two ends meet. Using the other scrap half of your wood as a base, drill a small hole through the center of the two ends. This just gives you a nice little place to put your screw. Place your washer over the screw, and attach the new leather handle into the back of the wedge with the drill. Now admire your handiwork.

eal estate market conditions are a very reliable indicator of the overarching economic climate in the United States. When home sales volume and prices are up, every other aspect of the American economy is thriving, as well. In recent months, the U.S. has seen a much higher household formation rate, which is great news for real estate (and the economy, in general). It means that more people are getting jobs, changing lifestyles, and ultimately, have more cash to support all of this. Surprisingly, seniors are leading the way for the creation of new households right now. The baby boomers are moving out of the homes where they raised their families and upgrading to higher-end living. This is a serious driver for the luxury housing market, and it will continue to be for the next few years. Meanwhile, millennials are reluctant to enter the housing market. They saw what happened with previous generations and the overextension of credit, and they are enjoying the freedom and portability of renting. Even so, inventory remains impossibly tight, driving prices higher (while wages lag far behind). In 2016, prices are expected to increase by 4-6% more. If you plan to buy, now is the time. The first order of business had to involve two things: food and coffee. Fortunately for us our first stop was Salto Coffee Works. We were greeted by a clock tower and Tin Shed Sports, a bike and ski shop, making it very clear that this is a gateway to the outdoors. The town is only four miles away from Indian Peaks Wilderness and Eldora Ski Resort. We enjoyed the house-roasted specialty coffee, one Latte and Cortado to be exact, and ordered from their chef-driven and seasonally prepared menu, a creamed carrot soup with a dollop of yogurt, topped off with fresh baked bread. Next stop – shopping. Our eyes dazzled with the sight of a teal building with a huge sign that said, ‘Geodes, Crystals, Fossils, Gemstone, Jewelry.’ What else does a girl need? We enjoyed the renowned gluten free macaroons and a fresh baked cookie with creamy ganache to compliment our second daily round of lattes. All pastries are made with butter, sugar and real chocolate, apparent with each fresh bite.

Nova Chocolate A BEAN TO BAR ENTERPRISE

chieve romantic hero status with small-batch, artisanal chocolate. Lafayette's Nova Chocolate has been churning out tasty, sustainably-sourced goodies since 2011. Originally known as Nova Monda, the company was recently purchased and rebranded by former employee Andrew Starr. Part chef, part food chemist, Starr and his three employees

spend long hours making sure the product is consistent despite the fickle nature of cocao harvesting. Nova's “single origin” products are made with cocoa beans grown in Nicaragua and Ecuador using a direct trade process, which Starr describes as better than fair trade. “We're dealing directly with the source,” Starr says. “The idea is the farmers are getting a good price for their product and we also have them build the infrastructure to do some of the processing.” Instead of a quick export cash crop, the farmers take time to ferment the beans as well as roast them and crack them into “nibs” before shipping to the U.S. In the case of the Ecuadorian chocolate, they also do the first grind of the beans and ship it as “liquor”, the term for pure cocoa in liquid form. “I like the idea of them having more of an industry than just a plant,” Starr says. “We need to make sure that from the moment this is picked off the tree that everybody's taken care of.” Nova's product line is still small, which allows for more exacting quality control. They currently produce five items: three Single Origin Chocolate

Bars with cocao contents of 70%, 75% and 80% ($6); individually wrapped Sea Salt Almond Truff les ($2); and jarred Dark Chocolate Ganache ($10). Large commercial chocolate makers often remove natural cocoa butter and add emulsifiers, flavorings, milk solids and hydrogenated oils, but Nova adds nothing but organic cane sugar. “Nova's idea is ultimate simplicity and focus,” Starr says. “We harvest something great and we don't add anything to it except for that little bit of sugar.” Using very traditional processes of churning and tempering, the chocolate ultimately achieves that perfect snap, shine and flavor. Starr has this process down to the micron and regularly checks the chocolate for the correct sweetness and thickness. Much like coffee, beer and wine before it, the chocolate industry is experiencing an artisanal revolution where handcrafted precision is turning out superior varieties and flavors. Despite a nationwide interest, Starr says there are very few “Bean to Bar” chocolate enterprises in Colorado, making Nova very distinctive. For a memorable treat, Starr recommends the truff les or ganache for “easy eating” but says the Dark Chocolate Bar Trio is a fun tasting experience. Even if you think you don't like dark chocolate, he suggests expanding your palate and giving all three bars a try. “It's like going to a great wine tasting to open your mind.” NovaChocolate.com
