What do you want to be when you grow up?
market area operations director
T
his is one of those questions every little girl and boy is asked from kindergarten all the way to college. The children’s responses are often times imaginative. Johnny wants to be a firefighter, astronaut and doctor. He’s been imagining different scenarios since he got his first toy fire truck. But what about little Suzie? What could she aspire to become? It seems like ages ago that Suzie wouldn’t have as many opportunities. The glass ceiling hung high overhead and cultural norms prevented fighting these obstacles. Fortunately, things for the most part have changed, especially in a place like Boulder where female entrepreneurs thrive in the job market. Forbes released an article about “25 Best Metros for Female Entrepreneurs” with some interesting statistics. At the top of the list was Boulder, Colorado, with the most women-owned small businesses, 4.42, per 100 people. The opportunity for women to carve their own path is endless in this town.

So how does the entrepreneurial bug bite?
Michael Rainero, Tom Strongman
This is a question we answered after meeting with 14 inspirational business owners (pg. 48) who each shared their unique stories and tidbits of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. I also got coffee with Danielle Renfrew Behrens, who is a local Boulderite working as an independent film producer and started her own production company, Superlative Films (pg .68). Annie Toan, owner of the new hot spot Arcana, dined with us one evening and told us about her experience as a new restaurant owner (pg. 36). Each woman had her own story to share. And this month it is all about her-story, not his-story that defines these women. We hope you enjoy.

Above the Fold: New Expressions in Contemporary Origami is the Longmont Museum's newest special international art exhibition, running up until May 1, 2016. In the hands of nine artists from Japan, France, Canada, the U.S., Israel and England, what was once considered a children's craft becomes a sophisticated global art form. Paper is transformed into breathtaking sculpture, large-scale origami installations and conceptual works that express contemporary social, political and aesthetic ideas. Above the Fold was developed by International Arts & Artists and independent curator, author and educator Meher McArthur. The Longmont Museum is thrilled to be one of the only stops in the United States on the exhibitions international tour. hen local Boulder businesses team up with the city’s nonprofit organizations in the spirit of entrepreneurship and philanthropy, they can create true and tangible change for the betterment of the community and its people. With the Audi Cup café project, that’s exactly what Audi Boulder and Bridge House are striving towards and accomplishing. Launched in December 2015, the Audi Cup café is a quick and convenient coffee stand right in the Audi Boulder showroom on Exposition Drive off Arapahoe here in Boulder. Audi patrons can purchase coffee and pastry items as well as snacks and breakfast and lunch items, including wraps, burritos, soup and more. The café is also open to surrounding businesses in the area, and all revenue goes towards supporting Community Table Kitchen, a program of Bridge House, which provides jobs and job training to homeless men and women in the area so that they can create and follow through with their career goals. “We have partnered with Audi Boulder since 2014 and have deepened our partnership each year,” says Isabel McDevitt, executive director of Bridge House. “We share the spirit of entrepreneurship and commitment to improving our community through innovative and bold ideas.”
IN HOME, CONCIERGE PHYSICIANS Restoring the confidence, convenience and integrity of the physician-patient relationship.
What began as a traditional philanthropic relationship, as McDevitt would call it, has evolved into increasingly unique partnership ideas with Audi Boulder such as the Audi Cup café. The Bridge House is an organization that has been providing programs, resources, and support services to homeless adults in the Boulder area for over 15 years. From basic needs services to more specific programs, such as their Community Table Kitchen project. The Community Table Kitchen project provides paying jobs and culinary skills training to homeless men and women. When an espresso or a cup of coffee is ordered at the Audi Cup café, they are directly supporting participants in the Community Table Kitchen project, as the café is staffed by members and participants of the program. Audi Boulder continues to partner with Bridge House through programs, volunteering, and more, helping Boulder’s citizens thrive so that the city may in turn thrive. Visit Audi Boulder and read up on Bridge House and all its amazing programs to get involved and support a better Boulder.

An Evening With Annie Toan ARCANA CO-OWNER ANNIE TOAN SHARED WITH US HER VISION BEHIND THE NEW BOULDER HOT SPOT. EXPLORING AMERICA’S CULINARY HISTORY, ONE DISH AT A TIME.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

walked into Arcana just as owners Annie and Elliott Toan were preparing their staff for the night ahead. Taking my seat quietly, I lis-
tened as the bartenders, waitstaff and hosts were not only brought up to speed on the night's food specials, but assured of their integral part in Arcana's operation. "We're all humans," Elliott states in his address, going on to describe how he and Annie are behind their staff both in and out of work. From the time I walked in, to sitting down with Annie for dinner, to the time I left, it was more than evident how much heart she and Elliott have for their new restaurant. Passion. It's hard to think of another word to describe Annie Toan's attitude toward Arcana. Boulder is home to countless farm-to-table restaurants, which speaks quite grandly to our city's culture. Annie’s vision goes beyond that to include not just relationships with local farmers, but friendships. “Farm-to-table should be inherent now. We wanted to take that one step further,” she says. “What I love about food is how it brings culture together,” remarks Annie as we wrap up our pre-dinner chat. The chefs are preparing our meals, and as we get ready to enjoy the evening’s fare, I am feeling like part of the Arcana family. Perhaps the only thing better than the hospitality of the Arcana circle of kindred spirits is the food. Actually, we’ll call it a tie. Here’s part of our conversation that evening with Annie Toan.

Institutes of America) in NYC and Le Cordon Bleu in Arizona. Chef Matt ended up working for Sean Brock on the farm and then in the kitchen at McCrady’s in Charleston, SC before moving to Husk Charleston. After some time at Husk, Matt was called home to run his Grandfather’s farm in Tennessee. Turns out he couldn’t stay out of the kitchen so he applied for a line cook position at Flyte, Nashville. Sooner rather than later, Matt was promoted to Executive Chef of Flyte and was named one of Eater’s Young Gun’s Class of 2013 along the way. The rest is basically history. This question originally appeared on JenniferEgbert.com TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THE RESTAURANT? WHAT WAS THE PROCESS WITH DECIDING THE AESTHETIC AND OVERALL VIBE?
Like the food, it was important to us that the interior design of Arcana has a very unique, noticeable, interesting and cohesive voice and personality. Another tid-bit of wisdom we have picked up along this journey is to look at the metaphorical “pendulum” in restaurant trends, and look to move, at least slightly, in the other direction. So, while so many great restaurants are trending towards slick, clean, and minimal design, we felt empowered to spread our wings and embrace a sense of whimsy and sparkle. We have worked for quite some time with Sara Blette, our wonderful interior designer to curate this space. We wanted the restaurant to feel like a beautiful home that someone spent years decorating, while remaining uncluttered and slightly tongue-in-cheek. That was a thin line to walk. We committed to a vibrant and varied color pallet. Guests are treated to bold wall coverings ranging from sexy black and gold wallpaper, to a hand crafted book instillation, to a pickled oak wall. Once again, we love these elements on their own, when you put them in the same CONTINUED >

restaurant they sing, offering different aesthetic experiences which leads to a different vibe. Our bar has become the welcoming heartbeat of the restaurant, filling up at five and staying busy until close. Lastly, the tables and chairs speak for our desire for the guest’s comfort. Our bar stools make you want to never leave, our community table begs friends to gather and linger over food and cocktail in a very mellow way. Arcana’s booths are built to feel comfortable and able to focus on the meal in front of you and the guests whose company you are enjoying. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR MENU? IT’S “TRUE-AMERICAN” BUT YOU SEEM TO TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH WITH DEFINING “AMERICAN” CUISINE.
When we talk about “true-American” we are talking about understanding the history of American cuisine, the “true” history. For us, that means beginning at the beginning, looking as far back as we can into the recorded history. For that reason we use the line “Food Migrations and Inspirations” to describe our thought process. Right now, in the beginning, we will be Photography by Chris Nyce
using inspiration from Native peoples. This influence can be found in cooking techniques, ingredients like wild forage and regional spices and seasonings, and then expanded upon by the inspiration of Chef Lackey and his team. As we move into the spring and summer we will be focusing much more on showcasing the regional, small producer, agricultural systems found in the region. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WITH ARCANA’S FIRST YEAR IN BUSINESS?
We have already thoroughly enjoyed serving our friends and family along with new faces and the community as a whole. That has always been the goal and one of the things we have been the most excited about. I would say that one of the most exciting and fulfilling aspects of this process and

or maximum views of Boulder’s legendary scenery, one client family sought out the right property rather than the perfect home knowing they would remodel or remove the existing structure entirely. With the help of Mark Bossert of Bossert Residential to find and orchestrate the real estate transaction for this Rolling Hills property, Cheri Belz of Belz Architecture and her client got to work designing a beautiful new home. The existing non-descript, 1970’s mine shaft-style home was demolished. In its place now stands a mid-century modern structure taking full advantage of its views. The definition of indoor versus outdoor spaces is blurred by the use of nano walls and the consistent appearance of Colorado red flagstone throughout the exterior and interior design. Passive solar and photovoltaics, as well as a partial grass roof, were key design requirements by the clients. Each of the family’s two children have their own bedroom and bathroom, and an additional multipurpose space was added for art and music creation. Laundry was incorporated near the master closet for ease of access. The open-air ribbon fireplace is a focal point of the main level and divides the dining and living areas using tasteful custom concrete. 44

As a safety feature allowing glass-free installation, a special vent opens before the gas turns on. With a chef and cooking teacher in the family, the kitchen includes comfortable cork flooring, top-notch fixtures and an oversized pantry for added storage. Extra light shines on the prep spaces due to the use of windows in place of a backsplash. Belz says she has architecture in her blood and was greatly impacted by her father who was a modernist architect in the 1950’s and 60’s and passed away when she was very young. She says this project represents her personal style, which she calls modern organic for its use of curving walls and lots of natural materials. There is more softness and comfort compared to the growing trend of cubist modernism. This home was completed in 2008 and recently sold to a new owner. Belz’s work has been featured in 5280 and Better Homes and Gardens magazines. She won first place in both the Exterior Remodel and Whole House Remodel categories for a $500,000 - $1 Million home from the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver in September 2015.

handele Gumucio has an eye for style and knack for interior design. She launched StudioVert in San Francisco in 1999, just a few short years before moving to Boulder. It’s a one-woman-shop (with the occasional help from handy assistants) that allows Gumucio the opportunity to live out her dream job as an environmental designer. (Which isn’t about the green movement for those who don’t know, it’s about designing a three-dimensional atmosphere.) Always interested in how we interact with space, light, volume and texture and how these elements influence people in complex and sometimes personal ways, Gumucio balances the relationship of form and function with the environment in which people relate to it. Using thoughtful design choices, Gumucio often acts as a translator—from thought to curating tangible objects—who cares about her clients’ stoCONTINUED > ries and how they want to live.
LIGHTENING UP Layering interesting textures with furniture that is both joyful and functional, Gumucio helped create an environment that helps support the homeowner’s physical and emotional health.

THE MAKING OF A FARMHOUSE (CON TI N U ED)
One of her latest projects involved designing a modern farmhouse in North Boulder’s lively Holiday neighborhood. The homeowner is a certified yoga instructor and dedicated meditation practitioner. Gumucio matched her with a builder who also happens to be a certified yoga instructor as well, and the three of them collaborated to transform the space into something spectacular.
ROOM FOR GROWTH Complete with sliding barn door, the downstairs yoga studio offers abundant space for working on poses, whether only one or multiple people are engaging in practice.
AN ENTRANCE WITH IMPACT The custom designed credenza was a collaboration with Portland designer Reed LaPlant. This entryway welcomes and sets the tone for the rest of the house. Most of the artwork in the home was from the owner’s personal collection.
EASY FLOW This cozy space combines earthy tones with bursts of color (inspired by the owner’s frequent travels to Brazil) and features more custom-made furniture by LaPlant, coffee tables and a dining room table. New, attractive light fixtures are by Schoolhouse Electric Co. and Roll & Hill.

THE MAKING OF A FARMHOUSE (CON TI N U ED)
THE IMPORTANCE OF NUMBERS A total design overhaul, including new poplar wood paneling (which was then painted over), a new headboard mirror and Room & Board nightstands. Gumucio made sure to keep in mind the importance of having duplicate items. (Note the two nightstands and Nelson bubble lamps.) The pairs were to manifest and support romantic partnership and balance, a tip borrowed from feng shui.
BATHING BEAUTY Situated right off the yoga studio, new plumbing, fixtures and mirrors were added to create an allnew bathroom, which doubles as a guest bathroom. The heated floors were done in earthy, dark tones to mesh well with the studio next door.

hen I first walked into Espressoria to meet with Danielle Renfrew Behrens, she was sitting quietly at a table reading. “You’ll see me reading scripts at every coffee shop in town,” says Danielle. She’s a Los Angeles native who recently relocated to Boulder with her growing family. I’m not sure who I was expecting to meet knowing she is a well-known film producer, but after our meeting I realized Boulder is a fitting home for her down-to-earth demeanor. This January, Danielle launched Superlative Films, a boutique equity fund to finance and produce independent films and documentaries headquartered in Boulder. “I’m setting up something that I think will be good for the community and art scene here,” says Danielle. “Everyone thinks with an independent film it’s L.A. or New York, and I’m excited to say, ‘Well you know what, there are other pockets of this country that are really excited about the arts and film.’” For the past six months, Superlative has been raising money from local and national investors. She’s now considering a number of projects while continuing to raise funds for creative, character-driven films. “Now I’m putting on a curator’s hat and I’m starting to find projects that I think are meaningful. No matter the genre, it always starts with a strong story.” "No matter the genre, it always starts with a strong story," says Danielle.

DANIELLE’S STORY
Despite growing up in L.A. surrounded by hopeful actors, directors and screenwriters, Danielle never felt that childhood urge to enter the film industry. It wasn’t until college that things changed. “For me, it was just an avenue for social change,” says Danielle. “But then I fell in love with the medium.” After working on several documentaries for PBS focusing on women’s issues like the history of reproduction rights and Roe vs. Wade, her preferred style of film slowly started to shift. Originally focusing on subject-issue films, at 26, her preference changed to character-driven stories after working on her first venture into fiction filmmaking, Groove. It was a low budget independent film about the San Francisco rave scene. Real DJ’s and ravers were enlisted as actors to keep the authenticity of the story. In order to work on the project she opted out of film school and partnered up with writer/director Greg Harrison to work on set. This was her first gig as a feature film producer and Danielle was involved with every aspect of the filmmaking process from beginning to end. Starting with screenwriting to casting, all the way to sales. “With all of my films I’ve had a really close relationship with the filmmakers and I would lie on the train tracks for them,” says Danielle. Sundance accepted Groove (fewer than 2% of films submitted are accepted) based on a rough cut, and the film sold hours after its premiere with an intense bidding war. This launched Danielle’s producer career in the independent film industry. It also made her appreciate the power of storytelling. “At the end of the day if your film is not entertaining, it doesn’t matter how important the subject is,” says Danielle. This is when she also realized that addressing issues such as women’s rights could still be done, but with a creative twist. “Later I did Double Dare, and that to me was just as much as a feminist film. You see stunt women jumping off buildings and getting lit on fire, but it dealt with very substantive issues of women trying to make it in one of the most male dominated subsets of Hollywood,” says Danielle. “It was doing it through a different lens, an entertaining lens.” WOMEN & FILM
As portrayed in Double Dare two stuntwomen, Jeannie Epper and Zoe Bell, are dealing with the deep-seated issues of sexism in Hollywood. This is an issue that leaks into all aspects of the film industry: from actors in the spotlight, to the moviemakers behind-the-scenes. “As a member of Sundance’s Women Initiative, I was part of a gender study they commissioned along with Women in Film. They asked, ‘What’s your perception of the ratio of women to men in this industry?’ And at first I thought maybe it’s not 50/50 but I have never felt held back by a glass ceiling,” says Danielle. “But when I saw the statistics my jaw dropped and I realized this is actually a much bigger deal than I thought.”

According to a 2015 study conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Films, women accounted for 9% of directors, 11% of writers, 6% of cinematographers and 26% of producers. Women comprised 22% of protagonists, 18% of antagonists, 34% of major characters, and 33% of all speaking characters in the top 100 domestic grossing films. “I do think that people are taking steps to change it. I see a sea change coming because there’s finally awareness about the lack of women and people of color in the entertainment industry,” Danielle says. Important groups such as the Sundance’s Women Filmmakers Initiative and specific funding for female filmmakers will also contribute to changing the current disparities. “Superlative is a women-run company. I’m not going to limit myself to only working with one gender, but I’m trying to do my part to bring more diversity to the film industry,” says Danielle. A NEW INITIATIVE
After many years working in L.A. it was time for a change in scenery. But Danielle’s 2012 move to Boulder didn’t mean the end of her career as a producer. Since living in the Front Range she’s completed three renowned projects all of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, The Queen of Versailles which received Sundance’s Best Director Award, Emmy nominated Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, and Grandma which garnered Lily Tomlin a Golden Globe nomination. She also launched her new initiative, Superlative Films, which will help small, independent movies with both financing and producing. There will be funding for both seasoned directors and new talented directors just entering the scene. “Discovering new talent is something I’m really excited about,” says Danielle. “Many filmmakers we know and love today got their start making films similar to those that Superlative is doing.” For example, a few heavy hitters like Lena Dunham, Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson are all now established writers/directors who got their breakthrough at Sundance with low budget independent films. “These important voices in storytelling came from this world (of independent films).” BEING INDEPENDENT
When I asked Danielle to define ‘independent films,’ she laughed and said that’s a hotly debated topic in Hollywood these days. “Traditionally, an independent film was one produced outside of a major Hollywood studio. But that means big budget films made by companies like Lionsgate and Miramax are technically independent films too,” says Danielle. “For me, an “indie film” is made on a modest budget, with a unique voice and point of view.” "For me, an "indie film" is made on a modest budget, with a unique voice and point of view."

“Superlative is a woman run company. I’m not going to limit myself to only working with one gender, but I’m trying to do my part to bring more diversity to the film industry,” says Danielle.
These are the films Superlative will be funding and creating, films with a new voice not funded by big corporations and established studios but by an impassioned team. Since first starting in the film industry, Danielle has always preferred to make movies independently and then sell them to studios or distributors once they’re complete. “There’s always been a market for a well-told story, but what is shifting and what was really apparent in January at this year’s Sundance Film Festival is that there’s a surge in demand,” says Danielle. “There are a ton of new buyers in need of content. You used to sell the theatrical and home video rights but now with all of these new platforms like iTunes, Netflix and Amazon, the digital rights can be just as valuable if not more.” With such a rise in demand, fellow producer Donald Zuckerman, the Director of the Office of Film in Colorado, and Producer Paula DuPré Pesmen have been very supportive of Superlative’s initiative. Pesmen also serves on Superlative’s advisory board. Zuckerman has even started incentives to bring film productions to Colorado and make the state a film-friendly place. As we all know, Colorado offers a pretty nice working environment. “We are excited that Superlative Films is launching here in Colorado, and consider it a major addition to our filmmaking community,” says Zuckerman. “What most excites us about Superlative is Danielle Renfrew Behrens, its founder. To put it simply, Danielle is one of the best independent producers in the business today, and her track record is indeed superlative. With the landscape of film methods changing and whether people watch films on their iPhones or in movie theaters, the film business is more alive than ever. With Superlative Films, it’s an exciting time to witness film taking its root in Boulder. 26.2 WITH KARA GOUCHER
PROFESSIONAL RUNNER, MOTHER AND WIFE, KARA GOUCHER IS NOTHING SHORT OF IMPRESSIVE. SHE SHARES WITH US A GLIMPSE OF HER LIFE IN RUNNING SHOES. ARTICLE KATE MANZ

Boulder Lifestyle | April 2016
A
s a two-time Olympian, an American record holder, World Championship bronze medalist, and one of the most accomplished
female distance runners of all time, Kara Goucher is one Boulderite you want to know. We caught up with her recently and she let us in on how she balances life as a mother, wife, professional runner and Boulderite.
A FEW IMPRESSIVE FACTS ABOUT KARA
• She graduated from the University of Colorado with three Division I NCAA championships in cross-country, the 3000m, and 5000m. • Kara is one of seven women living in the United States to have run a 10 km race under 31 minutes. Only 71 women have ever run under 31 minutes. • In April 2011, Goucher returned to marathoning after having her son, Colt in late 2010. She placed fifth at the Boston Marathon, setting a new personal best by a minute with a time of 2:24:52. • On 13 February 2016, Kara placed fourth at the US Olympic Marathon Trials, finishing in 2:30:24.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL RUNNER AND WHAT SPARKED THE PASSION FOR THE SPORT?
As soon as I began organized running when I was 12, I fell in love with it. It was the first sport I did that felt natural to me. I never thought about making a career out of it until I started running at the University of Colorado and I saw former team members running professionally. By my junior year I was really hoping to make it as a professional as well. "It was the first sport I did that felt natural to me."
"It was the first sport I did that felt natural to me."
IT'S INCREDIBLY INSPIRING AS A WORKING MOM TO SEE YOU KICK ASS. HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE IN LIFE AS A PROFESSIONAL RUNNER, MOTHER AND WIFE?
Life is all about balance. My life is more complicated as a mother, but it is more fulfilling to me. It has given my running more meaning. While my family always comes first, there are times when my family makes sacrifices for my running. And I make running sacrifices for my family. I’m not perfect at it, but they really support each other. I am a better mother because I feel happy chasing a dream. Likewise, I’m a better runner because I truly appreciate it and know that there is more to my life. "Life is all about balance."
“Life is all about balance.” HOW DO YOU STAY CALM AND FOCUSED ON RACE DAY AS WELL AS GETTING THROUGH THOSE CHALLENGING PARTS OF A RACE?
I am always a bundle of nerves on race day but there are a few things I do to help myself calm down. I remind myself of all the hard work I’ve done to get to this point, all the hard workouts and miles I’ve put in. I also remind myself of how grateful I am for the experience. I spent many years injured on the sidelines and I remind myself how thankful I am to be a participant rather than a spectator. CONTINUED >

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU IN PREPARATION FOR A RACE (THE 2016 OLYMPICS)?
A typical day would be to get up around 7 a.m. and get my son ready for school. Then I’d meet my coaches for my harder session around 9 a.m. It would take between 2- 2 1/2 hours depending on what we were doing. Then I would head home for lunch and a nap. I’d get up and head over to see one of my therapists for some body work. Then I’d pick up my son from school around 4 p.m. and drive to Rally Sport. I’d put him in child care there, do my double run and lift weights. I’d get home around 6 p.m. to have dinner and spend some quality time with my family.
WHAT 'S ONE (OR A FEW) OF YOUR FAVORITE BOULDER GUILTY PLEASURES?
Ah, so many. I love going to the Rio for a margarita before dinner. Brasserie Ten Ten for dessert. The fried pickles at OAK at fourteenth are insanely delicious. I love brunching with my family at The Buff or at Tangerine. Basically I love food. And Boulder has great food.

time in my life. But then when I had my baby and was thrust into full-time, round-the-clock motherhood for the first time, the support seemed to dry up. There’s the six-week post-partum check-up, sure, but that was about it. Besides that brief visit with the ob-gyn, most

women are on their own. That crucial postpartum period – when studies indicate that more than three million American women suffer from depression and intense anxiety – can be an alienating and lonely time for first time (and beyond) moms. happens to lots of couples,” Egbert says. “And I thought, ‘What is going on? What aren’t we doing right as health care practitioners?’” That was when Little Mother’s Helper was born. LMH is a cool deck of cards and app to help support moms in the weeks and months following child birth. The advice is geared toward uplifting the mind, body and soul, and it’s dispensed like a really wise, fun BFF. From evidence-based facts and tips on navigating the Baby Blues to getting through 3 a.m. feedings to providing moms with the mojo to trust their instincts, LMH is always on hand to give a little boost. “It’s crucial to track and support women in this post-partum time. If we can provide relief to even one woman, we feel like we’ve done our job,” Egbert says. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the cards launched in December 2015. The accompanying app debuted last month. And while they’re looking to expand their reach and move toward the larger world of digital media, “We’ll never replace a doctor or midwife, but we want to be a place where women can ask questions and get answers from healthcare professionals.” The cards and app are a fun way to fill the gap currently existing in women’s post-partum healthcare. Egbert hopes that one day women will get the cards from their doctors, midwives or nurses when they take their babies home from the hospital or birthing center. Between those and LMH digital media, she wants to provide women with access to education and community – even in those late-night hours when help can be hard to come by. “Our dream is to build it (LMH) out to a place where women can connect,” Egbert says. “We want to combat that alienation that many women feel in early motherhood.” LittleMothersHelper.com

TASTING ETIQUETTE
With tasting wine, it is hard to go wrong. The most important thing is to be open-minded! Not all Riesling is sweet. Not all chardonnay is buttery or oaky. There is a big difference between Syrah from the Northern Rhone Valley and Shiraz (syrah) from Australia. I taste wine every day and am constantly surprised by having my mind blown by a new exciting wine from a region I thought I was not into. The world of wine (and beer, whiskey, tequila, gin, etc.) are evolving so quickly. Brands that you might have loved five years ago might have been bought and sold and could be producing completely different wine than they used to. The overall point here is to stay open minded and find a great sommelier or wine store that you know and trust to turn you on to new things. Don't think you know everything, because you don't. Nobody does. There is always something great to discover.
SOPHISTICATED
Simplicity.
TASTING REDS VS. WHITES
The primary difference between red wine and white wine is that red wine production involves a period of skin maceration, the skins are left with the juice while the wine ferments, while in white wine production, the juice is pressed off the skins prior to fermentation. This results in the tannic nature of red wine. The tannins of red wine come from the skin - you can feel the tannins on the top of your tongue, and on your gums - this is why tannic red wine, like sangiovese or cabernet is so great with a fatty steak - the tannins help cut through the fat.

ARTIST WILL DAY AND ISPLACK ORGANIZED “GET YOUR COLORS ON” LIVE ART EXPERIENCE FOR THIS YEAR’S SUPER BOWL.
92

ARTICLE DANA LAPINEL
T
he Super Bowl seems like ages ago but the feelings revolving around that special day have continued to resonate with local artist Will Day. Not just because he’s a Broncos fan happy with the 50th anniversary win, but because of the once in a lifetime experience he shared with another Boulder business, isplack. Isplack is an eye black company founded by J.P. O’Brien in 2014. Day and O’Brien joined forces in San Francisco at the 2016 Maxim party to design a larger-than-life live art piece the night before the big game. It took over 300 pairs of hands, a few celebrities, and partying from 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. to conceive the inspiration painting, CLASH50. “We brought the idea to Maxim and Maxim really loved the idea and what it would add to this whole experience,” says Day. “They really bought into this idea of art, sports, entrepreneurship and creativity.” With so much excitement buzzing around the celebration of 50 years of NFL history, art was an avenue to express and memorialize the energy. “It’s really more about an expression of the moment,” says Day. “We captured a moment that is done but it’s in that painting and that will never change.” The painting started with signatures of celebrities, singers and tenured football players
framing the outside. From there, under Day’s direction, partygoers contributed to the piece with different mediums. Isplack paints, markers, acrylics, spray paint, sponges and squeegees – Day’s personal favorite tool – were all used to compose the piece. The result was an urban style modern painting created from the hands of impassioned individuals. “I think the story is really about empowering the creative spirit and allowing art to be accessible to people to unleash their greatness. That is what this painting is about. I directed it and controlled it, changed it and manipulated it, but I invited people to really experience this,” says Day. CLASH50 is currently being shown at The McLoughlin Gallery in San Francisco but will make its way home to Denver in the spring. Many bids have already been made for the piece, but Day is waiting for the perfect buyer. Once the right art enthusiast is found, proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club. Day says, “This was a collaboration I really enjoyed. It doesn’t matter if you’re homeless or Peyton Manning. We’re all creative and anyone can do it. The key is learning to let go.” WillDayArt.com Isplack.com

early 70 percent of American families have no legal plan in place. Many people don’t know how to proceed or are overwhelmed
with choices. Some people try to DIY their estate plan, only to discover they’ve wasted time making big mistakes. The better choice is to find a trusted attorney to create a proper plan that protects your
ASK THE
family and your wealth. Step one for any family with children under 18 is to name guardians for children. These are eight key things to consider when naming guardians for your kids.
EXPERT 1 ESTATE PLANNING ATTORNEY
MARTHA HARTNEY FILLED US IN ON EIGHT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN NAMING GUARDIANS FOR YOUR KIDS.
ARTICLE MARTHA HARTNEY
• Make sure you have an emergency response plan in place for your minor children. What would happen to them in the immediate hours after tragedy has struck until your
guardians can arrive? Keep your kids out of protective custody and foster care with a thorough emergency plan.
2 3 4
• Name more than one potential guardian. What happens if something happens to your first choice? Choose three alternates in an order of priority and document them in writing. • If you name a couple to act as guardians, make sure you decide what should happen if the couple breaks up or if one dies or is incapacitated. Document this choice prop-
erly to ensure the well-being and care of your children. • Name guardians in a separate, freestanding document, not inside your Will. A Will is not effective until you’re dead. If your guardianship nomination is in your Will and
you’re incapacitated, your children could be left without a guardian—and stuck in a judicial proceeding as a result.

• Exclude anyone who you would not want to care for your children and document your decision in writing. • Avoid taking financial resources into consideration when deciding who will raise your children. It is the parents’ job to provide enough resources for the guardian to raise our
children for us, not the guardian’s job to fund that endeavor. • Create an estate plan. Consider creating a Revocable Living Trust to prevent a court from taking control over you, your money and your children. A living trust is the
only way to avoid probate and keep your family’s financial management within the family. It’s also the best way to protect assets from your family’s future divorces and creditors.
8
• Don’t just pass on your financial wealth—pass on your real wealth—which is who you are and the impact you’ve had on the world. Make sure to create a
record of your impact on your family and community. The best estate plans not only make sure your family is cared for properly, they makes sure your loved ones know where they came from. Legal planning for families is a critical step in living a full life. Each of us knows we’re not promised tomorrow. When we take care of our family, we can let it go and live our best possible life. Find an attorney you like and get it done. HartneyLaw.com/learnhow
