Spring Fever

MAY 2016

T

here’s something so rejuvenating about the month of May. The trees are awakening, flowers are budding to say hello to the sun, summer travel plans are closer than ever and it's finally wedding season. I’m starting to think May is my favorite time of year. That’s why this issue revolves around wedding and travel, two of the loveliest topics. We ventured up 9,000 feet to style a mountain modern shoot with Boulder’s best, and featured a very unique union of two artists in the Boulder backcountry. We also included two travel features, one close to home and the other far away. San Francisco, aka “the city,” has well-earned its slogan, "Paris of the West." There’s so much to see, eat and do in this city by the bay. By far our biggest obsession this month was colorful Cuba. My Grandparents immigrated to the United States from Cuba many years ago and the culture has survived the passage of time and generations in my family. With tensions loosening for the first time since the Cold War, it’s an exciting time to share stories and recipes de Cuba with our readers. Also, check out the creative styled shoot “Dreaming of Havana” artistically done by Studio Be Salon. I hope you all enjoy the May flowers and we encourage you to read Boulder Lifestyle alfresco. This special month only comes around once a year, enjoy it!

I

t is easy to become disoriented when the fog rolls in on the San Francisco Bay, especially if you’re in a penthouse quite literally in the clouds. When a San Francisco couple decided to create a retirement condo to showcase their extensive art collection, they hired Mosaic Architects and Interiors—a boutique firm with offices in Boulder and San Francisco—to bring their vision to life. Three waterfront, high-rise condo units sharing an elevator lobby were gutted and converted into one floor plan perfectly designed for the couple’s lifestyle. Rather than viewing the city’s fog as a challenge to conquer, Mosaic and the clients chose to incorporate the landscape and skyline as the primary works of art, while also displaying select pieces from the couple’s collection. The result is stunning white-on-white in a calming and contemporary style not bound to any time period. The clear distinction found in typical homes between walls, ceilings and cabinetry was intentionally blurred to create a seamless flow throughout the unit. Mosaic choreographed every aspect of the way the couple would live through careful selection and placement of lighting and use of proportions. A mixture of matte and high-gloss surfaces—from the etched mirror backsplash in the kitchen to an automobile-grade powder coat finish on cabinets and plumbing fixtures—adds to the texture and reflective glow of each room. Stefan Eder, Mosaic partner and lead architect/designer on the 3,000 square-foot project, says the condo feels different every day CONTINUED >

because of changes in how natural and artificial light behaves in the space. This was intentional in the design, which includes hidden fixtures and illuminated mirrors, as well as color-changing LED light accents and a custom illuminated glow box made of 3-Form Chroma resin in the kitchen. “Lighting is one of the few languages we can speak when white is the only color,” said Eder. The furniture chosen for this project adds another source of color and interest. Mosaic and the client wanted furnishings true to the 1960s construction of the building, so they consulted with the folks at Knoll, a furniture maker and fabric company, for recommendations on original fabrics and styles. Platner sofas and chairs were selected for the main living area, and Barcelona chairs offer a seating area from which to take in the ethereal views. Eder and business partner Jane Snyder have worked together for nearly 20 years. A native of Germany, he manages the San Francisco office while Snyder runs the Boulder office. Together, they participate on most initial client meetings offering complementary styles and personalities. Snyder says Mosaic has been successful all these years due to their geographic diversity, strong balance between the technical and artistic aspects of the business and the great designers and craftsmen with whom they work. “We also have a lot of fun designing spaces that have proper proportions and flow and just feel good," Snyder says. 36

SAN FRANCISCO 101 YOUR CHEAT SHEET TO “THE CITY”

ARTICLE JESSI HACKETT

A

rriving from the airport at Haight-Ashbury on a summer night to chime the bell of my college pals’ apartment may be one of the hippest moments in my life. The next five days were a blur of seafood, wine on the beach, microclimates, brunch and sightseeing. San Francisco is cool-casual, reminiscent to Boulder, but on chic steroids and situated on a California coast. Trademark design, creative personalities and worldclass food fuse together to build one of America’s favorite cities.

TID BITS AND TRAVEL TIPS:

• Don’t call it San Fran—locals will immediately correct you. You’re safe with “SF” or “The City." • Looking for a foot tour? “This is a place where you can be the only people here. Everybody who you cross paths with is your family, your friends.”

Lake Effect LAKE EFFECT There are very few places where one can truly get that sense of privacy. With hiking trails, there is always another family or two. As far as campgrounds go—forget about it. Even quiet mountain towns fill up with eager visitors and destination wedding crews crashing each summer. Fortunately for us, we met Tommy Feldman, director, founder and main camper at Camp Granite Lake, where we finally found a true sense of seclusion. Perfect for our backcountry modern shoot (and for brides seeking solitude). “There are few venues of this size that are so exclusively private,” says Feldman. “This is a place where you can be the only people here. “The lake and the trees kind of speak for themselves from a natural point of view.” Despite the exclusivity, Camp Granite Lake is only a 30-minute drive from Boulder, yet feels like another world tucked away in the tree-covered views of the continental divide. The 135-acre property, including an 8-acre lake, was purchased by Feldman three years ago but has 80 years of rich history. Our crew was small (only ten), but for actual weddings, the camp can house up to 125 guests, with an in-house planner and catering. Despite our few contemporary props, we let nature do its work. “The lake and the trees kind of speak for themselves from a natural point of view,” says Feldman. CONTINUED > We couldn’t agree more. L

RealLaineWedding: & Jay Schreib

aine and Jay Schreib found love, fittingly, because of their first love—the arts. The couple met in the theater, and while they had worked together for a while and had grown close, something clicked while working on a ballet in China. “Everything seemed right,” Laine says. When they decided to get married, the couple was in Athens, Greece, making an opera. So, wedding planning was a bit of a challenge. Since they, and many of their family members, are from the Midwest, they wanted a central location for their July 4, 2015, wedding to make it easy for everyone to attend. Luckily, Laine’s mother, Robbie, lives in Boulder and was instrumental in planning everything from the big items to the smallest details.

REAL WEDDING (CON TI N U ED)

And it’s no surprise that these two artists chose the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art to host their reception. For Laine, the most memorable part of the wedding was spending time with her bridesmaids and bridesman, most of whom she’s known since she was a child. “It was like showing up to a party with your favorite people and realizing everyone was there to see you,” she says. Her bridesman, Randy Gibson, is a composer and created a very special piece of music for their wedding. Another personal touch was a Buddhist— the spirituality Laine was raised in—wedding offering. The wedding party carried six offerings that were placed on the altar before their officiants. Their décor was inspired by nature. Centerpieces were made from large bunches of Aspen branches, and birch trees were scattered throughout the reception area to continue that sensation of being under a canopy of trees. 56

Boulder Lifestyle | May 2016

“We wanted to bring the outside in,” Laine says. Mission accomplished. The BMoCA was transformed into a woodsy wonderland. “As we’re both artists, it was sort of a dream to have our reception at BMoCA,” Jay says. “The fireworks made for an incredible end to the evening.” Of course, in theater, the show must go on, and the couple—who was still in the middle of making the opera in Greece—had to fly back to Athens the morning after the wedding. But hey, there are worse places to take a honeymoon than Greece. They even managed to find time to visit the Greek islands. “We meant to travel through more of them,” Laine says, “but we fell completely in love with the island Milos and stayed there for ten days.”

COLORFUL CUBA

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY SAM ALVIANI

SAM SAYS SERIES Sam grew up roaming the green meadows and river valleys of Vermont. Iit was there that she gleaned an appreciation—and a curiosity—for the small towns of America, and later, for farther corners of the world. She has a deep-rooted penchant for exploring the connection between people and place. As a writer, Sam has focused on food, travel and lifestyle storytelling.

P

ack your bags, power down the phone, break out the map and prepare for a travel experience like no other: Once your plane touches down in Cuba, you’ll be amazed, perplexed and delighted. Cuba is a paradox; it’s vibrantly

beautiful, a disarming time warp, both bucolic bliss and urban grit, an old-school kind of cool derived from economic isolation and a rich, enduring cultural backbone. Cuba can leave you inspired and incensed in the same moment. It’s a place that is misunderstood and deeply entrenched in its sense of place. As ease of travel improves, tourism has brought a sweep of visitors that populate the white-sand beaches of Varadero, the cobbled streets of colonial Trinidad and the sprawling, music-filled cafes of colorful Havana. Cuba—all 42,000 square miles of it—is a sight to see. A lesson in poverty, happiness, beauty, simplicity. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to visit the diverse range of landscapes in its entirety. On a recent trip there, I homed in on two locations in the western region of the country: Havana and Viñales, a small valley town nestled in the mountains of the Pinar del Río. Here are some best practices—a collection of things to know before you make your own trek to the Pearl of the Antilles. GETTING THERE & WHEN TO GO

You can generally expect warmer weather (and more tourists) in the dry season between November and April. If rain doesn’t put you off, May through October is the rainy season. Travelers might want to avoid September and October when the threat of hurricanes is at its highest. Although most organized tour trips now arrange chartered flights directly from the United States, we booked flights to Cancún and worked with a Canadian travel agent to book our Cancún to Havana leg, all without a hitch. HAVANA

A feast for the senses, an untamed energy, a place of contradictions. The steady beat of horse hooves and salsa music. Havana is a place that emanates spirit, even in the face of neglect, and survival through its people and its multitude of awe-inspiring architectural treasures. Explore the sun-washed streets, sip a rum at an open-air bar, share an ice cream walking the leafy promenades of Vedado—it holds a beauty and contagious state of mind that is all its own. Where to Stay

Keep an open mind: skip the hotels and explore the local casas particulares, a private homestay similar to a bed and breakfast. Knock on the door of any building with the tell-tale white and blue symbol to check nightly availability. If you’d like to plan farther in advance, Airbnb has a growing roster of casa owners who list properties. What to See

The Malecón is a quintessential eight kilometer stretch of road that flanks the sea. Walk it, and you’ll see the culture of Cuba: fisherman, 1950s-era automobiles, rowdy teenagers and a host of street food vendors. The road snakes up into the leafy Vedado neighborhood, site of the Hotel Nacional de Cuba and streets evocative of aging grandeur. Getting Around

Let your feet take you where they will. Get lost. The best way to learn about Havana is to explore the crowded neighborhoods, quiet back CONTINUED >

streets and sunlit squares. If you’re heading somewhere that requires a taxi, you can grab one easily near hotels and plazas; most rides are equivalent to five U.S. dollars or less. What to Expect

Havana can be overwhelming, but if you’re there for longer than a day you’ll settle into the mindset and movement of the city. The same things—same contradictions—that can inspire confusion (or even anger) are also what make the city so soulful. VIÑALES

A lush, rolling expanse of jade fields, sprawling tobacco crops and thatched tobacco-drying houses. A valley cradled by towering mogotes and rugged hills. In the quiet of the valley, you’ll find endless opportunity for hiking, rock climbing, cave exploring and swimming hole-hopping. The spirited, cigar-smoke laced village is easygoing; travelers kick-off their shoes (or lace them up) to trek the landscape, seek out dramatic vistas and take in the countryside bliss of the simple life on a porch swing. Where to Stay

If you go the casa particulares route, opt for a room in a house on Viñales’ main drag; most have inviting porches for taking in the activity of the town or relaxing with a book. There are two hotels that can provide the definitive Cuban experience: La Ermita and the class Hotel Los Jazmines; both offer stunning panoramic views of the valley. Rates start at $61 CUC. What to See

Viñales is a Unesco World Heritage site, meaning you’ll want to take in the traditional agriculture at the tobacco farms and take advantage of the otherworldly natural surroundings. Yoan and Yarelis Reyes can guide you on a trek through the Valle de Silencio, a gentle, unexplored stretch of valley, where the majority of the municipality’s tobacco is grown. They’ll take you through fields dotted with oxen and ploughs, as well as the Finca Raul Reyes, the family farm where you can sample hand-rolled cigars and a dose of local rum. Getting Around

To get to Viñales from Havana, we arranged a taxi collectivo (or shared taxi) with several other travelers. Our casa host was happy to help us with this, but you can ask any taxi driver if they know of groups that are leaving and have extra space. Once you get there, Viñales is entirely walkable, but there are plenty of taxis available by the town plaza for longer trips to nearby caves or national parks. What to Expect

Viñales is simple: you’ll find a slow, relaxed pace here—a far cry from the frenetic energy of Havana, and a welcome measure of peace and quiet—a pint-sized agricultural settlement situated in CONTINUED > one of Cuba’s most beautiful natural corners. 62

COLORFUL CUBA (CON TI N U ED)

Steer clear of hotel restaurants and opt for paladares—in-home restaurants—for the most authentic, innovative tastes of Cuba (like cumin-laced ropa vieja and taro fritters). A few to try in Havana: Atelier, La Guarida and El Cocinero. Check exchange rates before you go; it might be worth it to bring euros instead of U.S. dollars to avoid the 10 percent surcharge tacked on at most currency exchanges in Cuba. We did this in advance at our U.S. bank; you’ll have no access to credit or ATM cards. Assume you’ll have little to no internet connection and no cell service—trust me, you’ll embrace the quiet and connection with your travel partner. Pack light for easy transit between your casa and your next destination. Skip the tourist lines at La Floridita, where Hemingway once threw a few back—visit La Bodeguita Del Medio for a daiquiri instead. Do some reading—our picks were Waiting for Snow in Havana by Carlos Eire and Havana Nocturne by T.J. English.

Artist Profile:

MCDAVID HENDERSON ARTICLE LISA GROVE | PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

P

ushing the boundaries of stylistic guildelines, McDavid Henderson is a Boulderbased artist whose work uniquely captures experiences and moments in time.

Drawing inspiration from a huge range of mediums and creative outlets, from Tony Morrison to jazz to John Coltrane to hip hop and more, Henderson’s work resists standard definitions in the best ways possible. LISA: How did you get started drawing? MCDAVID: Around the holidays one year in elementary school, I remember coloring a

picture of a Christmas tree in a coloring book. First, I did a traditional drawing with a green tree, some candy canes and standard circle-shaped ornaments. I finished it quickly, so I started another one. The second one was much more colorful and had this radiating color going out from around the tree, and it was very different from the first. In retrospect, I like to think the only way I could have colored that second, more unique tree is by having done the first one, and I still have that outlook in my art. LISA: So you enjoy the artistic process? MCDAVID: It’s the act of creating that I’m really attracted to. I like understanding

that artistic lineage. LISA: Do you feel you have a signature style? MCDAVID: Not really. I enjoy self autonomy, artistic freedom and not being pigeon-

holed. I draw inspiration from a lot of different subjects, like music, literature or pretty much any experience that can be a gateway into that creative mindset.

n 2006, Hair Stylist Beth Weber opened Studio Be Salon with husband and entrepreneur Ian. The high school sweethearts' hope was

to create a space where folks from all walks of life could be themselves and to be bold in doing so. Collectively, the salons now employ 75 people. “Growing our business and our family at the same time has been a blessing as well as a real struggle,” says Beth, who jokes that she could multiply her years of marriage by seven, like dog years. “But Northern Colorado has been amazingly supportive with both.” Studio Be’s mission is to inspire people’s potential, while also helping one express his or her individuality. “It’s just hair,” says Beth. “But for many people, hair is a huge part of who they are and how they express themselves. It is more than vanity for many people. After a big life change, new hair can be what gives you a new perspective.” Healthy hair combined with a healthy, creative work environment for all 75 employees has allowed the Webers to intentionally build a platform that fosters success, both in their clients and in their employees. Good friend Darby Brown, lead stylist from the Old Town Fort Collins studio and artistic team member, explained her vision for the Havana Dreaming photo shoot to Beth over a casual sushi lunch. Beth loved it and knew it would tie in nicely with the announcement of the salon carrying a new product, Oribe, because Oribe’s creator is Cuban born. “It’s great to launch at the same time!” says Beth. “Our entire team supported her vision and changed the salons to support the visuals from the photo shoot. Now all of us at Studio Be are Havana day dreaming.” CONTINUED >

TROPICAL & MOUNTAIN RETREAT LOOKS FOR LESS.

hether you’re traveling by plane, train, car, boat or maybe even by gondola, vacations are the perfect time to slip into something comfortable and relax. As Rags

Consignments shows us, you truly can have both style and comfort while catching some much-needed R&R. Margaret Miner, co-owner of Rags Consignments (along with husband Ken Larkin), has more than two decades of experience outfitting Colorado women in fashionable looks for less. Rags has stores in Boulder, the Highlands and Cherry Creek, as well as a warehouse location opening in Boulder in early summer. If you've booked your tickets for a mountain getaway or a tropical retreat, you’re probably already making a list of things to pack. Good news: We did the work for you. Here are tips on what to pack, and what to leave behind. Heading into the mountains for a few days of light hiking and campfires? Layer up.

Think about versatile tops, nubby wool sweaters and, of course, plaids that can be tucked in, twisted or fashioned in multiple ways and that will look great with whatever bottoms you switch into and out of throughout the day. Leather ankle boots are a must and warm socks are a given. Pack light and leave the fitted, fancy clothes at home. For a beach haven, slip into light and airy linen and woven oversized cotton tops that will breathe. Bonus: Linens and cotton can serve as cover-ups during the day or cute, flowy tops at night. You’ll need a killer bikini (or two), flat sandals, a summer hat and sunglasses. By night, a simple, embroidered cotton dress, sexy heels and that new sun goddess glow is all of the style you’ll need. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out these fashion picks courtesy of Rags. 84

arbecue can be synonymous with outdoor, carefree parties in the heat of an Indian summer. It can be comfort food, gooey and warm straight from the oven (or smoker). It can be spicy, loaded with sauces handcrafted by a master chef. At The Ghost BBQ & Spirits, it's all of these. This nook of flavor needs no opening act, though it wouldn't hurt to try after seeing one next door (at the Boulder Theater) either. Residing in the former George’s restaurant adjacent to the theater, The Ghost gets its name aptly from the legend that George reportedly haunts the venue. Owner Bob Sargent combines 12 years' experience with Savory Cuisines Catering (the company behind the food at the pre-63rd street Avery) with both Kansas City and Texas-style barbecue in the heart of downtown Boulder. The Ghost offers staples such as macaroni and cheese and baked beans, as well as unique

choices such as jackfruit sandwiches, shrimp and yam cakes and various happy hour sliders, making it perfect for meat lovers, picky eaters and vegetarians alike. Just as our crew made our way to our table at The Ghost, Sargent and Chef Scott Selker immediately started preparing their best signature dishes. As the plates rolled out and our stomachs got full, we laughed and shared moments just as if we were with family. Sargent’s years of operating in a “people” environment have clearly paid off with both food quality and restaurant atmosphere. Boulder is an eclectic city of the perfect combination of food, beer and culture. The Ghost BBQ is positioned for both passersby to do a drop-in beer and dinner combo and theater-goers to start (or complete) their night. We couldn’t think of a better addition to complement our iconic hometown theater and the acts who frequent it—George’s ghost included. May 2016 | Boulder Lifestyle
