For the Dads & Dudes

JUNE 2016 publisher

W

hile summer is not officially here until June 20th, the telltale signs are definitely around us.

With my oldest son starting tee-ball this year, it brought back many great memories of my childhood. In the town where I grew up, the little league association hosted a skills assessment day, then a draft. If you have spent any time around me, you probably know that Kansas City Royals blue runs through my veins. As an eight-yearold, you can imagine what it was like when Dennis Leonard, who pitched for the 1985 World Championship Royals team, called my house to say the team he coached had drafted me. Along with Dennis’ son Ryan, there were several other boys of former Royals players on our squad. We even had practice in John Wathan’s backyard, who managed the Royals during that period. You want to talk about fun? How about when we had our year-end party at coach Leonard’s house and Bo Jackson was doing cannonballs off the diving board! Hundreds of hours spent playing catch with my dad in our backyard. I can still hear the locust and tree frogs some 30 years later. Fast forward to this year. I was so excited to sign my son, August, up for his team and even volunteered to coach. The night finally came for our first team meeting. Before we left the house, I went ahead and Googled the address of the field—Armstrong Park. I was surprised I’d never heard of Armstrong Park. Nothing was showing up on Google Maps, so I finally called the Lafayette Parks and Rec number. After a little more research, it all hit me. I signed my son up for a league in Lafayette, INDIANA. Wow! Needless to say, there was a bit of disappointment and embarrassment on my end.

CENTRO LATIN KITCHEN PRESENTS FIRST EVER MOLE FESTIVAL Centro Latin Kitchen & Refreshment Palace celebrated the incredible versatility and flavor of Mole with its very own festival on Thursday,

Ardith Sehulster, Shelter Board member and former President, shared the enthusiasm for the project expressed by the shelter’s volunteer cooks, “They love the mural, are so impressed with Xan's talent and cannot imagine that wall pre-mural.” Shelter Executive Director, Greg Harms, added, “Xan caught the vision for this space in the Shelter— just the right amount of color, cheer and meaning. We trusted her, and she came through with a truly thoughtful piece. Residents, staff, volunteers and visitors to the shelter will delight in this for a very long time.” Explanation of mural: from left to right the mural moves from an upside down house with shattered windows representing homelessness and disruption across a bridge that represents path to a better future leading to an intact house and a full sun.

March 24. Chef Dakota Coburn invited guest chefs Clint Myers from Zolo Grill and Jamey Fader from LOLA Mexican Fish House into Centro’s kitchen to create their own takes on this Oaxacan classic. All three dishes were served alongside a special Vago Mezcal pairing from Bar Manager Natalie Dodson. Mole is a classic and possibly ancient Mexican sauce made from various types of chiles. There are as many legends about its origins as there are types of mole sauce, with variations ranging from negro and coloradito to poblano and almendrado. Some moles have as many as 30 ingredients, and family recipes are heavily guarded and passed down from generation to generation. The name mole comes from the Nahuatl word for chile sauce, chīlmōlli and it is said that, because it contains North American, European and African ingredients, modern mole is the first international dish created in the Americas. "The preparation and study of mole has become an obsession for

MAKING IT PERSONAL IT'S NATIONAL MEN'S HEALTH MONTH SO WE DIVED INTO THE RETURN OF THE HOUSE CALL WITH CONCIERGE MEDICINE. A SYSTEM TO GET THE BEST HEALTH CARE WITHOUT THE WAITING ROOM.

ARTICLE LISA GROVE | PHOTOGRAPHY LAURA KINSER

34

Boulder Lifestyle | June 2016

T

he world of medicine is ever-changing. In many ways there have been great advances in the field, but in other ways physician to patient ratios widen. This relationship between patients and their doctors have become increasingly transactional and impersonal. Think about the last time you visited your primary care physician. This probably involved having to schedule an appointment months in advance, then enduring an extended wait once you arrived, only to be followed by a disproportionately brief conversation with your doctor. For those living on the Front Range, Dr. Eric Hernandez, M.D., is here to shift the paradigm. With his new venture, Alpine Woods Medical, Dr. Hernandez looks to bring health care back to the days of physicians coming to the patient and making house calls with his concierge medicine service philosophy. By emphasizing the development of personal relationships with patients and making the health care experience convenient and comfortable, Dr. Hernandez and Alpine Woods Medical give the patient control and ownership over their health. Dr. Hernandez founded Alpine Woods Medical in late 2015, bringing his philosophy of educating the patient to the forefront. “I got into medicine to take care of people,” says Dr. Hernandez, “and this has really allowed me to do that.” With a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School and a background in emergency care and as a primary care physician, Dr. Hernandez emphasizes that the hamster wheel we often find ourselves in when dealing with medical care is not conducive to the ongoing health

Alpine Woods Medical Concierge Medicine AlpineWoodsMedical.com 720.799.7473

of patients. Dr. Hernandez gravitated towards the concierge style of medicinal practice because he believes it leads to more efficient, effective, sustainable health care. “It’s up to you to decide what to do with your body,” says Dr. Hernandez. “My job is to help you come to the safest decision that makes the most sense for you.” At Alpine Woods Medical, you pay a one-time, annual fee which gives you complete access to their care provider for the year. Dr. Hernandez travels to you, taking all inconveniences out of medical care, and appointment times last as long as they need to. You have access to all the usual primary care services. This personalized mobile care also means that your doctor develops a relationship with you and knows your lifestyle and medical history, making for more informed consultations and more efficient care, eliminating time spent giving the Reader’s Digest version of your medical history to a new specialist each time you need to see a doctor. “We are putting health care back in the hands of the patient,” says Dr. Hernandez.

What's your recipe: For succeeding in a crowded market?

AVERY IPA Adam Avery Avery Brewing Co.

"1 part team + 1 part quality + 1 part innovation + a dash of chaos factor. I surround myself with extraordinarily passionate and talented teammates who are drawn together by the common dream of creating the perfect beer and the perfect beer experience. With the understanding that everyone's perfect beer and perfect beer experience is different, the breadth and depth of our portfolio makes us stand out—we make beers for every occasion, for every time of year, for every palate and for every step of a person's craft beer journey. We love pushing the boundaries of what beer can be, and our new brewing facility is allowing us to create even more barrel-aged beers so that beer drinkers around the country can taste more of these adventurous brews than ever before. We embrace the chaos of barrel-aging and, aside from quality, it's exciting that folks never quite know what to expect from Avery Brewing Company."

I got to live my childhood dream, racing bikes all over the world and even getting paid to do it. Then afterward, I jumped right into two passions that grew over my career as a cyclist ... food and wine. While few things other than a great appetite and a high metabolism are skills applied in both worlds, the ability to simply put my head down and dig is still one of the biggest things I can attribute to years on the road that help me now on a daily basis.”

BROKEN COMPASS Brandon Dwight Boulder Cycle Sport What's your recipe: For maintaining work/family balance?

"Well, if I knew the secret recipe for work/life balance that worked every time I’d be a billionaire! The truth is the recipe changes all the time. Sometimes I need more from my dedicated staff and incredible business partners. Or I may lean on my amazing friends or the extremely loyal cycling community. But the main ingredient has been and will always be my incredibly supportive and inspiring wife!”

EAST ASPEN HEIGHTS Dr. Winfield Hartley Boulder Plastic Surgery & IV Seasons Skin Care Clinic What's your recipe: How do you stay on the cutting edge of your industry?

"Step 1. I try not to be the first or last to adopt new technologies (safety and efficacy). Step 2. I treat patients as a whole with a comprehensive approach to aging: skin care, nutrition, prevention, team approach, minimally invasive to surgical procedures. Step 3. Use stem cells and the body's natural systems to promote revitalization and rejuvenation. I chose to become a plastic surgeon after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent bilateral mastectomies as part of her treatment. I was able to see firsthand the benefit that restoring form and function could have on a patients’ life and recovery. We have modeled our skin care and surgical rejuvenation practice to reflect the lessons learned from our cancer patients: comprehensive care in a nurturing, compassionate environment. Prevention and treatment go hand in hand, and we offer solutions for individuals at all stages of their lives." CONTINUED >

UPSLOPE DRY-HOPPED WILD ALE Matt Cutter Upslope Brewing Company What's your recipe: For managing the demands of rapid growth?

"At the core, the recipe is built around the ability to be comfortable with controlled chaos, but also being able to quickly sift through the chaos and identify the killers ... those variables that will bring you down, impact quality, hurt your brand, destroy your cashflow, disenchant your good people. Looking out 2–3 years is key: What's the lead time on a 120 barrel fermenter? Where am I going to get the money to pay for it? Will we need another brewer? But most of all, empowering your people to figure out how to put processes and systems in place to handle the next stage of growth will magnify your ability to prepare for growth from little old you to an entire team who know their job much better than you do."

MARGARITA Bryan Dayton OAK at fourteenth What's your recipe: For running a tight ship?

“A tight ship in the restaurant business? Ha! Restaurants are a beast, and it's hard to have an A+ night/day. There are so many moving pieces inside four walls. The biggest key is your people, everyone from the managers to the dish steward. It takes a village to feed one. Coaching is constant and never taking your eye off the ball in trying to have a perfect service. I’m blessed at all our restaurants, we have amazing staff, and they make sure the ship is tight at all times.”

What’s your recipe: For keeping a consistent 72 degrees under pressure?

OLD FASHIONED David Ellis Ellis Construction

“I have a strong passion for what I do. My recipe for “staying cool” under pressure is the confidence and satisfaction I get in knowing that I will deliver an excellent experience and product for my clients. The projects I build are complex; they are emotional and involve large investments from my clients. While custom building is challenging, my experience allows me to come up with creative and timely solutions and keeps projects running smoothly. After 22 years in the business, there’s little I haven’t seen or cannot figure out! Ultimately, my calmness comes from the security I have in knowing that I’ve earned the trust of my clients. At the end of the day, I’m reminded how fortunate I am to be building extraordinary homes in such a wonderful place. It helps put everything into perspective. So, why does the Old Fashioned cocktail suit me? Because it is classic, smooth and simple, yet it is all about the quality of the ingredients and the skill of how it’s constructed.” CONTINUED >

SMALL SPACES STUDIO SHED'S STYLISH BACKYARD RETREATS

ARTICLE JANINE FRANK | PHOTOGRAPHY ALLEN KRUGHOFF AND STUDIO SHED

T

hroughout history humans have craved and coveted small spaces. Little sanctuaries where we can feel safe and feed our creative bent. A place to philosophize, write, tinker, meditate, listen to the silence and explore the inner reaches of our true selves. From Henry David Thoreau's modest cabin at Walden Pond to Virginia Woolf 's hallowed room of her own, many notable writers and history makers have found solace in separation and inspiration in seclusion. Studio Shed, based out of Louisville's Colorado Technology Center, understands the need to get away from it all and has designed a line of outbuildings with a sleek, modern look that can accomplish anything from extra storage to turnkey residences. Studio Shed was founded by Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Mike Koenig, who met as professional mountain bike racers. Horgan-Kobelski needed a place to work on his bikes and built the first Studio Shed in his Boulder backyard. Koenig liked the concept so much he built one to use as CONTINUED > a home office. “Our company's vision is to help facilitate ways for people to live smarter rather than living bigger,” Horgan-Kobelski says. 72

Boulder Lifestyle | June 2016

Horgan-Kobelski says the company has grown exponentially since then. “We quickly realized there was a big opportunity for art studios, music studios and much more,” he says. The company now ships to all 50 states and will double the size of its manufacturing facility this summer. Though “shed” is a rather banausic term, these structures are a far cry from most backyard storage units. In fact, they've been used for everything from yoga studios and spas to home offices and even fully plumbed guest houses. While not technically part of the popular tiny house movement, these stylishly versatile structures are another way to achieve that level of simplicity. “Our company's vision is to help facilitate ways for people to live smarter rather than living bigger,” Horgan-Kobelski says. He sees a lot of clients choosing Studio Shed as a more affordable alternative to remodeling. “People who don't have $100,000– $200,000 to dump into a home addition. If they just need that extra little bit of space, this is a more affordable solution.” Studio Shed offers four lines of buildings with prices ranging from $4,000 for a small storage unit to more than $100,000 for a multi-building residence they completed in Sonoma, California. However, Horgan-Kobelski says the price tag for the most common set of options with a finished interior is $15,000–$20,000. Finished interiors are part of an add-on Lifestyle Kit that includes denim insulation, six flooring choices, LED lighting and drywall. Each building takes about five days to put together, or just one to two days without the interior finishes. Studio Shed has a network of certified installers all over the country, but customers are also welcome to DIY.

“We're really focused on sustainability. We want to produce something that will last as long as your home. It's going to be efficient and it's going to be a comfortable, healthy space to be in," Horgan-Kobelski says. Horgan-Kobelski says they take pride in the fact that everything is completely manufactured right here in Boulder County before shipping and meets strict requirements for efficiency and green building standards. “We're really focused on sustainability. We want to produce something that will last as long as your home. It's going to be efficient and it's going to be a comfortable, healthy space to be in," Horgan-Kobelski says. As a testament to its ecological leanings, the company offers a beetle kill siding that's a rustic reflection of the Colorado mining aesthetic. They're also planning to roll out a new series of gabled-roof buildings this summer to offer a more woodsy alternative to their signature West Coast architectural style. Whether you're planning to pen the next great American novel or need a guest house for mother-in-law visits, Horgan-Kobelski says these buildings may offer the separation and privacy you need. “We hear time and time again how a small structure like this has changed people's lives. In terms of their work-life balance or creativity and efficiency.” Studio-Shed.com

Atomic20 HOW ONE BOULDER BUSINESS IS CHANGING THE MARKETING GAME. ARTICLE JESSI HACKETT | PHOTOGRAPHY COLLEEN KELLY

W

alking into Atomic20 in downtown Boulder, the zing of innovative productivity is palpable. The space lends a studio-feel with

an open floor plan bathed in natural lighting and little touches of artistic detail, like a framed piece of calligraphy stating, “Sleep Will Come." It’s a coworking space, but with a focus on creative talent or what CEO Trish Thomas likes to call, “subject matter experts."

82

Boulder Lifestyle | June 2016

“THE GIGGING ECONOMY IS NOT GOING AWAY,” THOMAS SAYS.

“Nowadays, the world wants customization and quality. You’re not getting the best talent unless you’re tapping into contract and freelance workers,” she says. Graphic designers, copywriters, illustrators, photographers, marketing strategists and various other skilled professionals fill the trendy desks of this building, on a part-time and full-time basis. When a project comes along, Atomic20 curates the perfect team of creatives to tackle it, and once the work is done, the workers can disband and continue concentrating on their other self-employed endeavors. “We offer the ability to customize, and it’s hard to get that unless you can afford to pay a large advertising agency to build a whole team around you,” Thomas says. “We only pay the right people for the hours we need them.” With around 40 people utilizing the shared office space in Boulder and a network of 250 freelances as a whole, Atomic20 has plenty of skilled talent to leverage, and the freelancers like that they can find work and get work done. “I can’t work from home, I slack off. So working here is like peer pressure and inspiration,” says graphic designer Augustina De La Plaza of Freelo Design. “When it’s a project for Atomic20, it’s nice to have project managers keeping the client happy, and then I can just focus on the work.” With so many freelancers having similar skill sets working in the

President and Co-Founder Jeff Donaldson

same place, it may seem that competition could be a problem, but most workers have their own areas of interest. Graphic designer and branding identity specialist Zach Lee did the signage and graphics for Boulder’s Valmont Bike Park and has worked on various other projects in the outdoor industry. He says Atomic20 has “never felt like it’s too competitive, but more collaborative.” Not to mention, clients get teams that have a genuine interest and expertise in their specific industry. Of course, there’s always a nerve-racking element to self-employment. “It’s scary as hell,” admits President and Co-Founder Jeff Donaldson. “Freelancers are incredibly brave to disconnect from the work world they’ve been told is the only way to make a living. They have to be good at their craft and also at running a business, networking, business development and other things.” Atomic20’s framework offers the flexibility of freelance work, but operates as a more cohesive environment than your typical rent-adesk coworking space, perhaps alleviating some of the scare factor.

Freelance by the Numbers From the Freelancers Union 2016 report. /// There are 53 million people doing freelance work in the US—34 percent of the national workforce /// People who freelance contribute an estimated $715 billion in freelance earnings to our economy /// Twice as many freelancers have seen an increase in demand in the past year as have seen a decrease—32 percent experienced an increase versus 15 percent who saw a decrease /// 69 percent of freelancers say technology has made it easier to find freelance work /// 77 percent of freelancers say the best days are yet ahead for freelancing CONTINUED >

While many people have heard of and tried kombucha, it’s a drink whose definition eludes most. “Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage made with yeast and living probiotic bacteria,” says Dunn. At Rowdy Mermaid, their kombucha has flavors that are dryer than most with low acidity and that are infused with a variety of herbs and fresh flowers, making it palatable for a wide audience. There are many things that make Rowdy Mermaid unique not just to Boulder, but to the kombucha industry as a whole. Rowdy Mermaid is made from Colorado snowmelt and was the first kombucha brewery to release a caffeine free kombucha. They were also one of the first to open a taproom, which is one of the biggest things that makes Rowdy Mermaid special. Operating much like a craft brewery’s taproom, the Rowdy Mermaid taproom features special recipes and seasonal releases. Rowdy Mermaid bottles, distributes and sells their popular main line-up of products, such as their Living Ginger (a favorite of Dunn’s), Flower Grow, Rowdy Belly, Autumn Haze and Smoky Badger, and they also have special taproom releases, such as the Coconut Lemongrass, which they tapped in early March. These taproom releases continuously include ever-unique creations, such as the Pineapple Turmeric, making these creative and inventive beverages available and accessible to the public. Kombucha is not an alcoholic beverage by definition. In the coming year, however, Rowdy Mermaid will continue to cater to their adult audience by beginning to produce alcoholic kombucha drinks. Rowdy Mermaid is the first kombucha business in the region to have a license to create and distribute alcoholic kombucha, and this year will see them partnering with local breweries to continue developing interesting and delicious products for the Boulder community. Rowdy Mermaid’s taproom hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. RowdyMermaid.com

One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, this film finds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnnie Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnnie’s fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton's boundless wit and dexterity. Also screened will be the short film “The Goat” (1921) starring Buster Keaton. Chautauqua.com/Portfolio/The-General
