Color(Full) I
SEPTEMBER 2016 publisher
recently stumbled upon one of those cliche personality quizzes to see what “color” best describes your personality. I decided to put it to the test and see how accurate it was. The quiz went through a variety of basic questions such as: “Pick a weird paint color name, from ‘Salty Tear’ to ‘Mermaid Net’. “What area would you renovate in your house first?” “Choose a world cuisine.” Mexican, duh! “What would you want to find at the end of a rainbow?”
The questions went on and on, and only seemed to get stranger. Before I started the quiz, I predicted which color I thought I would be. Yellow. To my surprise, my color was white. I love white, but it is not technically a color. “You have an innocent nature, without being naive. You like things to be done properly, and can’t deal with too much clutter and mess in your life.” Hmmm… Not being able to deal with a mess when you have four children (sometimes five, counting husband) and a dog, isn’t an option. While I’m not sure that am a believer in the validity of this online quiz, the process was fun. What I realized about myself, is as the seasons change, so do my cravings. This rings true for food, clothing, activities, and even colors. I love fall almost as much as I love a tenderbelly pretzel dog from Cured on a friday afternoon. The air of fall will soon sweep crisp air through Boulder County. Along with that, all the offerings the season has for us Boulderites to partake in. Our September issue celebrates all the colors of fall fashion; traditional and nontraditional. Fashion for your wardrobe as well as your home. We sat in the studio with Edie Ure, pg 74 as she breaks the mold of traditional indigo dyeing by using flower, plant, and compost dyes. We also hopped on the bus with Old Gold and they showed us their vintage revival on wheels pg 66. We had so much fun with the issue and hope you enjoy it as much as we did. And whatever your color is, don’t take it too seriously, it’s ok to break the rules.

WINE SPECTATOR AWARDS FLAGSTAFF HOUSE WITH ILLUSTRIOUS GRAND AWARD 33 YEARS IN A ROW Flagstaff House has once again been honored with the Wine Spectator Grand Award for its commitment to fine wine and its 15,000-bottle wine cellar, an award they have won every year since 1983. Flagstaff House is one of only three restaurants in the world to have earned the award for this long. The Wine Spectator Grand Award is the crown jewel for restaurants with world-class wine programs. It is given to “restaurants that show an uncompromising, passionate devotion to the quality of their wine program,” says the Wine Spectator. “These restaurants typically offer 1,000 selections or more and feature serious breadth of top producers, outstanding depth in mature vintages, a selection of large-format bottles, excellent harmony with the menu and superior presentation. These restaurants offer the highest level of wine service.” This year, there are only 88 Grand Award winners worldwide. FlagstaffHouse.com

PRESERVATION INSTINCT STAYING COOL AS A CUCUMBER WITH AMONG THE COLORS. ARTICLE LAURA KRUDENER PHOTOGRAPHY SARA FORD

y garden is official going wild. From now until October it will be a part-time project to upkeep, har-
vest, cook and preserve all the goodies that our harvest is giving us. First up in our garden preserving process are PICKLES. The cucumber vines are going off, and I couldn’t be happier. This is my third year growing cucumbers and, finally, I seem to be having some luck. For the first batch of cucumbers, I didn’t have much time, so I opted for this quick pickle recipe to get me started. With quick pickles, it is a fast, no-fuss process that allows me to harvest a handful of cucumbers and make pickles without busting out the whole pressure-canning process. You just refrigerate them for a week and you are good to go. The pickles are good for four to six weeks, so they are great for all your cookouts and also make a great hostess gift. AmongTheColors.com

SMALL BATCH GARLIC & DILL PICKLES Makes 5 pint jars.
INGREDIENTS • 3–4 cucumbers • ½ red onion, sliced and cut in halves • 3 cups apple cider vinegar • 3 cups water • 4 tablespoons of sea salt • 2 teaspoons of organic cane sugar • 1 head of garlic • I bunch of fresh dill • 10 peppercorns • 1 tablespoon chili flakes • 1 tablespoon celery seeds
DIRECTIONS Slice cucumbers into wedges. Bring water and vinegar to boil; mix in sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool. Meanwhile, prep the garlic. Peel the garlic cloves and then give them a smash. To assemble the jars, first, stack in the pickles, and save some room for the other flavors and vinegar mixture. Next, add in dill and garlic. I like to two to three cloves and about four pinches of dill. Add red onion. I like to do four or five halved, single slices per jar. Next, give a pinch or two of the celery seed and crushed pepper. Once the vinegar mixture has cooled, pour it into the jars making sure to cover the top of the cucumbers. Seal jars well. Refrigerate for one week. Pickles will keep four to six weeks.

Soul Searching FINDING SELF-BETTERMENT THROUGH YOGA TEACHER TRAININGS.
B
eing proficient at the practice of yoga is not just about being able to master the downward dog pose. Yes, yoga is popular amongst
athletes as a recovery day, as well as with Boulderites looking for an hour of calm, but it also serves higher purposes. Yoga, at its core, is a multifaceted practice and all-encompassing lifestyle with goals much deeper than a good stretch. For many Boulderites who seek to gain even more from yoga than their regular classes, yoga teacher training courses are intensive, immersive yoga experiences that expose participants to the complete yoga lifestyle and philosophy. According to Marsha Austin, owner of Radiance Power Yoga in Boulder, there is a variety of local studios that offer teacher training classes, including Radiance Power Yoga and Yoga Loft among others. “Boulder is blessed with a wide range of top-notch yoga training programs led by truly masterful teachers in so many different styles,” says Austin. “Locals don’t have to travel to get a world-class yoga experience.”

When choosing a training, it’s important to emphasize that yoga teacher training programs are not the same as yoga retreats.
Destination retreats, such as those that Shoshoni Shambhava Yoga offers, are short reprieves from daily life, essentially vacations where you can lay out your mat on the beach and have down time to enjoy other recreation. While beneficial, these are very different than yoga teacher trainings, which Austin describes as much more rigorous and demanding, but ultimately even more invigorating and rewarding. The Yoga Alliance, North America’s accrediting body for yoga instructors, requires a standard 200-hour training program in order to become a yoga teacher, and many Boulderites participate in the training regardless of whether they have goals of becoming an instructor. Instead, teacher trainings serve as intensive self-betterment experiences for locals and provide opportunities for a wealth of personal reflection. By learning the full eight limbs of the yoga practice (the physical practice is just one small piece of the teachings), yogis begin to understand themselves on a deeper level, have more clarity about what road blocks they are experiencing in their life, and gain an acceptance of who they are, among many other benefits. The commitment of going through a yoga teacher training course is one that should not be taken lightly. “Yoga teacher trainings are a deep journey into getting to know yourself better, which can be very challenging,” says Austin. That being said, taking part in a yoga teaching training can ultimately be a life-affirming experience to help you become more at peace with yourself and your world. You don’t have to be an advanced yoga practitioner to participate in a training, and it’s a study in the universal truths of yoga that, according to Austin, can be explored and enjoyed by anyone.
Yoga Retreat vs. Yoga Teacher Training Not sure whether a destination yoga retreat or yoga teacher training is right for you? Ask yourself some questions about your intentions, goals and commitment. • Are you looking for a quick escape from a demanding job or the bustle of daily life? (Yoga Retreat) • Are you feeling “stuck” in any aspect of your life and looking for deep-seeded answers to overcome it? (Yoga Teacher Training) • Do you find yourself wanting to extend the lessons you learn in your yoga sessions to more aspects of your daily life? (Yoga Teacher Training) • Do you need to hit the reset button with a quick excursion into a quiet, natural setting for some peace and clarity? eptember in Colorado might still feel like summer, but here at Lifestyle, we've got fall on our minds: a fresh, new season
for a chic, new you.
For our Bikers & Babes shoot captured by the talented
Noah Berg, we partnered with stylist Wendy Talmon and Rocky Mountain Harley-Davidson, a unique creative pair, who added edge to timeless classics. (Think denim, leather and more leather!) Completing the style trifecta was Boulder illustrator Sarah Nicholsen of Petite Press who brought her own creative stylings to create the dreamy, illustrated backgrounds. This is admittedly not the first time a motto-inspired shoot has been done: you might remember the September 1991 issue of Vogue and the iconic “Wild at Heart” spread featuring supermodels Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder and Stephanie Seymour. Styled by the legendary Grace Coddington, fashion was never again quite the same. Fast-forward 25 years (which, coincidentally, many fashion experts believe to be the full lifecycle of a fashion trend), and it's time once again to revel in rebel fashion. “Whether you're a hard-core biker or just love that classic biker look, you can incorporate some edgier pieces into your own style,” says Talmon. And who doesn’t love a little edge? We stuck with basic black-and-white, adding pops of Pantone's fall 2016 color lines for a bold statement: greys, burgundy, tans and teals. We hope these pages inspire you to make your own bold statement, to fear not the edge of fall, and to always stay wild at heart. CONTINUED >

Riley: How did this idea begin for ya’ll? Allie: We’ve always been sisters, always been thrifters and always loved vintage. We always wanted to have a boutique growing up, and then we realized how expensive that is so then we gravitated toward this truck idea. It’s so expensive to have a boutique, especially in Boulder and especially on Pearl Street, so [we thought] let’s just start with a bus! And then eventually we can grow into a store. Natalie: I’m even thinking another bus and then we can work more on our online sales. Originally, we were focused on “boutique, boutique, boutique” but now … Allie: …[n]ow we really like the bus, and it’s fun to drive around!
Riley: Are there difficulties or challenges surrounding where you can park your bus? Allie: It’s more lenient here in Boulder than in Denver, but you couldn’t, for example, just park on Pearl Street and be in business. We’re kind of figuring our ways to maneuver around and figuring out where we can park. We’ve made a lot of connections with local breweries and [Natalie’s] husband owns a restaurant, so we just pop-up and sell there. And then it’s a fun atmosphere in general — drinking beer and buying vintage! Riley: What’s your strategy when thrifting? Allie: We just know. As we sell more and more things on the bus, we are realizing what people like between what sells and what people are asking for. Just knowing — picking up something and recognizing its quality and seeing it as something that people will appreciate. We’ve worked in the fashion industry recently, myself at Buffalo Exchange and Natalie at Common Threads. Natalie: And now we know what to look for because of what people were buying. We almost shop differently for ourselves now because we inspect everything to ensure good quality items. Riley: Do you have spots you frequent when thrifting? Allie: We’ll typically stop in a thrift store on the way to the hot springs and it’s always the random, weird, small places that are the best! Natalie: We’ll find good leather, good jewelry, good cowboy boots in places like that. We’re branding ourselves slowly in terms of our inventory. We have become more curated, western and bohemian.

Riley: Being sisters, do you find pros and cons that come with that? Allie: We’ve always been close. I recently moved to Colorado from Europe. We spent a lot of time apart, so we feel we are making up for lost time while we do this. Rekindling a friendship we had while we were younger. And obviously, we fight … Natalie: …[a]nd make up very quickly! Allie: Like the same day we’ll call each other and apologize. [both laugh] But I think [being sisters] makes it really easy in a way, I couldn’t trust anyone the way I trust her. And because we’re sisters, we are so different and we bring very different styles to the bus. We try to represent our true, individual selves and what we wear daily. Natalie: [Allie] is definitely more European, funky and fun in her style. While I’m more conservative and almost classic in my style. Riley: What would you consider your favorite part of working in the industry? Allie: Finding one-of-a-kind pieces! I like wearing something that I know no one else in this town has. Natalie: We also like the hunt. We enjoy picking and believe we curate well and have the eye — and that’s one of the best parts! The events we do are also a big perk.

centuries ago, and uses wood blocks and intricate folds, clamps and binds to create a resist patterns in the fabric. “It is essentially grown up tie-dye, says Edie Ure, a local artist and designer. Ure, who has worn many hats in the fashion industry, now spends her days as a natural dye artisan and owner of an eponymous interior brand who works with other designers such as Ryan Roche, FairEnds and Garza Marfer (to name a few). DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR ART PRACTICE AND YOUR BACKGROUND.
I am a native Londoner and after graduating in fashion and textiles from Central St Martins, I worked as a designer in Milan, Paris and then New York working at Ralph Lauren Home. Later, I owned a couple of businesses, one print design company which enabled me to create prints for many major New York brands from Ralph Lauren, to Calvin Klein, GAP Ulla Johnson and Tocca. Before moving to Colorado, I owned a children's wear label, which I co-designed with Ulla Johnson. My ex husband's job brought us to Boulder and we moved very suddenly. At the time I had never lived anywhere so un-urban, I was more about human nature than nature. It is quite the opposite now. After I moved to Boulder, I took a step away for a few years because I had two young kids and there wasn't really a fashion industry here. It gave me a chance to absorb where I was living; the mountains and the remote and wild places in Colorado. I wanted to communicate that through my work and coming back to textiles was a very natural step for me. I utilize raw materials to dye my textiles: bark, leaves, flowers, roots, vegetables and minerals, to create luminescent colors without the use of toxins or chemicals. I now work as a natural dye artisan sustainably dyeing textiles for apparel/interior designers and I own an eponymous interior brand. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE AND USE OF COLOR?
I create easy pieces for the home that convey warmth and spirit, and bring color into a neutral landscape, like a vase of flowers. Color is key in my work. I make the prettiest shades of pink from botanical sources and hues of blue that are impossible to recreate with flat synthetic dyes. I can't look at a flower or a tree without considering what color I can extract from it. WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS WHEN STARTING A NEW PIECE?
I always start with a color first, and then consider which fiber would take the color the best. With natural dyes, the color can vary immensely according to whether it is protein fibers, like silk or wool, or a cellulose fiber, like cotton or linen. Silk is brighter and richer and cotton tends to be more faded and subdued. I create small batches of the dye in my backyard in Boulder. WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION?
I travel near and far as often as I can, but visits to a great florist or local garden center like Harlequin Gardens can be very exciting. I am obsessed with flowers and I'm always wondering how I can use them for their color. WHAT GOALS HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON YOUR CURRENT PIECES?
In our consumer culture there are so many throw away items, I try to make something that lasts and has an impact on the user but not on the earth. I would also like to find a locally produced hemp fabric to use in my collection. 76

W
hen first entering Historic Downtown Boulder, you're greeted by planters brimming with fresh flowers, and visitors are
invited to follow the red brick road. Is it somewhere magical like Oz? Not quite that magical, but it’s still one of the most active places around town. Pearl Street Mall, dedicated August 6, 1977, has been the hub in Boulder since the late 1950s. And throughout the years, the pedestrian strip now bustling with colorful locals, excited tourists, delicious bites and a selection of talented street performers, has remained a prime people-watching territory. It’s surprising how long the four-block-long walk takes due to the eclectic performances on Pearl Street. You can’t help but stop at every group gathering to take a peek at the next act. Chances are, you will stay for the entire show. “Entertainers have been coming to Pearl Street for 50 years. It’s been a long time tradition,” says Peter Irish who plays with fire and is also a self-taught juggler. As a crowd starts to gather he continues to entice other passersby with witty comments and promises of a once-in-a-lifetime show. “I was almost a performer in Cirque du Soleil,” Irish tells the crowd. “And I mean I filled out the application,” he says with a smile. After a truly remarkable show of juggling, acrobats on a rolling barrel and some knife throwing, the show wraps up. On to the next performers. CONTINUED >

“IT’S A SHORT SHOW, I ONLY DO A FEW TRICKS, BUT I MIGHT DIE.” - JOHN STORK
There are two veteran performers on the 13th block of Pearl Street, Mark Austin Riggs and Ibashi-i. Riggs first performed on Pearl Street in '92 and became a regular in ’96, although he has been a veteran in the field for the past 25 years, moving his one man circus show across 48 states and 16 countries. “It’s a tight-rope walk no matter what you do,” Riggs says when talking about working a show. You would think that sitting on a 10’3”-tall unicycle while juggling batons that are on fire would be the main event of his daily CONTINUED >

shows. That’s just the icing on the cake. Riggs’ shows are part circus acts and part comedy special. He scripts some jokes before each show but includes some improv here and there. Especially when viewers start to walk away, which is not a common occurrence. Then there’s Ibashi-i the famed contortionist. He has perfected squeezing his 6-foot, 160-pound body into boxes and crevices I’m not sure my two legs would even fit in. Decked in colorful Rasta clothing, he’s a performer who has gained local celeb status and is a staple of the Pearl Street scene.

After a long visit, it was time to go due to a summer storm that seemed to come out of nowhere. People ran for cover, children danced in the puddles and performers packed away their acts for the night. But as the age old saying goes, ‘The show must go on.’ And here on Pearl Street, it always will.

GREEN LIVING THE COLORADO GREEN BUILDING GUILD HOSTS ITS SECOND ANNUAL BOULDER GREEN HOME TOUR. TOURING THE BEST OF THE BEST IN GREEN HABITAT. ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE HOMEOWNERS AND ARCHITECTS
T
he Boulder Green Home Tour highlights some of the most innovative green building projects in Boulder and helps promote the collaborative exchange of ideas on green building
in our community. “We are also partnering with Flatirons Habitat for Humanity and donating 10 percent of our proceeds to their local projects,” says Ambra Sutherlin, a board member of the Colorado Green Building Guild and chair of the Boulder Green Home Tour. “The Guild’s vision is to ensure the widespread adoption of sustainable building practices to increase the efficient use of resources, create healthier buildings and support vibrant sustainable communities,” says Sutherlin. Doing so provides and encourages “community-focused networks of building professionals and the public to increase awareness of green practices. They share knowledge with one another in order to turn sustainable building practice.” During its inaugural year in 2015, ten projects were shown, including eight single-family homes, two multi-family projects and one tiny house. The self-paced tour had a strong turnout. This year, the tour is expecting more than 500 guests, with several green homes, ranging from traditional to modern styles, in the Boulder, Lafayette and Louisville areas open for viewing. Selected homes offer the latest innovative designs and breakthrough technology in green building in the areas of energy efficiency, passive house design, daylighting, solar, geothermal, non-toxic interior finishes, recycled and reused materials, Xeriscaping and more.
“The tour brings a collaborative exchange of ideas on green building in our community and awareness of green building technology and standards,” says Sutherlin. The tour is Saturday, September 24, 2016, 10 a .m. to 6 p.m. rain or shine. Advanced tickets are $15. Sutherlin adds, “We are very excited to announce the tour for 2016. This year we will have 10 homes on the tour. Three multi-family projects, four custom homes, one remodel and two tiny homes. The self-guided tour will feature privately owned green homes in Boulder, Louisville and Lafayette. In Boulder, the featured homes are all centrally located and are easily accessible by bike. We encourage people to get out and tour the homes by bicycle if they can.” Find tickets on their website or EventBrite.com. BoulderGreenHomeTour.org

A HISTORY LESSON
Hotel Boulderado An elegant structure with a storied past, the Hotel Boulderado is a testament to Boulder’s culture and resiliency. From renovations to hauntings to famous visitors and guests, the Hotel Boulderado stoically weathered the economic ups and downs of the 20th century and continues to thrive as a luxurious destination and integral piece of Boulder’s identity.
Robert Frost
1. The Hotel Boulderado opened on the first day of 1909 after hosting a New Year’s Eve Gala to close out 1908. Since 1905, Boulder had been looking to build a luxury hotel to attract people to the city, serve as a landmark and elevate the growing town to the next level. Designed by local architects William Redding & Son, the hotel was paid for through fundraising efforts and a great deal of local buy-in. If you can believe it, early room rates at the Hotel Boulderado ranged from just $1.00 to $2.50 per day!
2. From its opening through the 1930s, the luxurious Hotel Boulderado was the place to be in Boulder and the heart of local culture. Famous guests included Helen Keller and Robert Frost, and visitors flocked to Boulder and the Hotel Boulderado to enjoy the local theater, weather and unparalleled mountain views.
3. From the 1940s to the 1960s, the Hotel Boulderado suffered blows to its physical structure and reputation. From a snowstorm that cracked panes in the hotel’s famous stained glass ceiling to an influx of hippies who often camped out secretly within the hotel, the establishment lost some of its original grandeur. In 1977, however, artist Marie Garcia finished a replica of the original stained glass ceiling to be installed. This was also the year when the hotel was listed on the
4. The 2000s brought even more restorations to the hotel. With the opening of License No. 1, a cocktail lounge that had historically been an underground bar and hangout for university students called The Catacombs, as well as a revamping of The Corner Bar, today the hotel remains a reminder of the past and a symbol of continued future appreciation for the people and places that make Boulder a premium destination and culturally relevant place to live and visit.
