A Boulder bucket list... W

ith the summer solstice now in the rear view mirror, I have realized there are still a few items to check off my “Boulder Bucket List” for summer. I am hoping by the August issue, I have experienced the following: 1. Tubing Boulder Creek: The heavy spring rains, and subsequently high water, has certainly given me an excuse to push this one back. With that said, I’m a lake boy at heart, so a little chilly water isn’t going to keep me out of the creek. 2. Family Picnic at Betasso Preserve: The bar was set pretty high at my first experience here. Last summer, Kate and I had the pleasure of being invited to a farm dinner at Betasso that was catered by Chef Hosea Rosenberg. While you won’t see me on any Top Chef episodes, the picturesque views Betasso offers will more than make up for my lack of culinary prowess. 3. Concert at Chautauqua: It shouldn’t come as any surprise why this old barn consistently lands musical talent that could sell out venues five times is size. The acoustics, character and attentive audiences are just a few reasons why names like Chris Robinson, Bob Weir and Ryan Bingham keep coming back to Boulder. I’m especially pumped for the Punch Brothers show, which is slated for September 1st. As always, we appreciate the space you allow Boulder Lifestyle into your world. Thank you for reading!

WONDER AND THE JUICE GIRLS OPEN IN DOWNTOWN BOULDER Wonder, the beloved local juice bar, will bring its fresh concoctions to downtown Boulder this summer, opening a new store at the former Wok Eat space of 946 Pearl Street. Started in 2013 by Boulder natives and childhood friends Brooke Jordan, Robyn Knowlan, and Cecily Runge, Wonder creates healthy, delicious cold-pressed juices using only 100 percent organic, locally-grown vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and herbs to create a variety of wholesome, fresh concoctions on a daily basis. Wonder juice is never pasteurized, never pressure-processed, and always served in a glass bottle to ensure that it delivers the maximum amount of vital enzymes, vitamins, and minerals as well as the richest and freshest flavors possible. In addition to serving up the freshest, healthiest, and most delicious juice around, Wonder is also firmly dedicated to the Boulder community. It integrates sustainability into its everyday work life, with efforts like partnerships with local organic farmers, donating all leftover pulp to Mountain Farm Goat Dairy, and a bottle exchange program. If you're on Pearl Street this summer, be sure to stop in to Wonder for a delicious, freshpressed juice, WonderPress.co.

BETSY COLE FEATURED AT NCAR For Betsy Cole, art is continual discovery. There have been trips to Bali where she discovered that art can become a “dance of color,” there is the energy of the earth itself – the scorching sun, deep cool lakes, and expansive forests all come alive vibrantly in art, but, for Betsy, the most significant discovery has been that art can heal. It brings light and joy to the darkness and pain. As she began to untangle her own life, viewing it as a journey, her love of bright colors acquired a new healing purpose. Cole’s work will be on exhibit in UCAR Gallery I of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) June 1, 2015 to July 31, 2015, and isn’t an exhibit to miss. Scied.Ucar.Edu

TRAILHEAD NEW NEIGHBORHOOD IN TOWN “This project was given long-term construction phasing by the city of Boulder to help foster organic growth instead of a quick cookie cutter sort of subdivision, which will help with the diversity,” says Foreman. ARTICLE EMILY O’BRIEN | PHOTOGRAPHY LISA DOANE

T

Dewey Ave and 4th Street Boulder, Colorado. MoonbeamBoulder.com

railhead, Boulder’s newest neighborhood, nestles up against Mt. Sanitas and is a short hop from a wide variety of Boulder’s best activities and events. It’s slated to be 23 single-family homes. With 5.8 acres of property perfectly situated next to Boulder Open Space, Trailhead offers a unique opportunity to all demographics. Moonbeam Boulder and Surround Architecture are the masterminds behind this latest neighborhood where sophistication, innovation and relaxation intersect. The land was originally home to Boulder Junior Academy, a school run by the Seventh-day Adventists, many years ago. Christopher Foreman, developer at Moonbeam Boulder says, “The primary objective was to create an extension of the existing Mapelton and Newland’s neighborhood along with the eclectic architecture that make Boulder what it is today.” To achieve this, all buyers select their own builder and their own architect. Project architects are some of Boulder finest, too, including J Logan Architects, Arch 11, Surround Architecture and HMH Architecture + Interiors. An architectural review committee then evaluates plans prior to submission to the city of Boulder in order to insure the designs coincide within the design guidelines. “This project was given long-term construction phasing by the city of Boulder to help foster organic growth instead of a quick cookie cutter sort of subdivision, which will help with the diversity,” says Foreman. Trailhead is just steps away from downtown’s amenities and outdoor recreation. Trails are public access and open to the community as well as the general public. And it’s in close proximity to community shopping for daily convenience items at Community Plaza located at Broadway & Alpine. Lots are already being purchased by a mix of buyers—empty nesters, families and second home purchasers who want to take advantage of the “lock and leave” accoutrement. With an HOA that takes care of the landscaping, sidewalks and common areas, homeowners don’t need to stay put to keep up external home appearances. Less than a dozen lots remain for sale out of the original 23. “There’s been a strong demand. We’re well ahead of schedule on our projected sales absorption,” says Foreman. Which should come at no surprise for a new community that truly exemplifies the best of Boulder. Lots range from $750,000 to $1.1 million plus. July 2015 | Boulder Lifestyle

Upscale Resale is Fabulously Green CONTINUED GROWTH AT LONGMONT’S FABULOUS FINDS ARTICLE CAMILLE WILSON | PHOTOGRAPHY LISA DOANE

P

assionate about a good treasure hunt, Clarissa Edelen opened Fabulous Finds Upscale Consignment in April 2011 to fill Longmont’s need for a boutique-style resale store. The 5,000-square-foot shop features quality clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture, home decor and art and has amassed a consignor list of more than 9,000, many of whom are regulars.

NEW FULL-FIGURED BOUTIQUE

Based on client requests, Edelen opened a full-figure boutique in November 2014 in the same building as the main store. Even at just 900-square-feet, the additional shop fills a need by providing a special, dedicated boutique for a population often frustrated searching for options in other general resale stores. Edelen says the nearest dedicated plus-size resale shop is on Colfax in Denver.

RESALE INDUSTRY = GREEN

Edelen says being green is really what the resale industry is all about. Given its mantra to “repurpose, reuse and refuse the pay retail,” the upscale shop appeals to savvy people with environmental convictions. “Our clients know what they’ve invested in an item, so they’d like to get a little something out knowing that if we don’t sell it here it still goes to charity,” explains Edelen. “There’s really nothing in the resale industry that ever goes to waste.” Fabulous Finds has something for everyone and has become a destination for guilt-free retail therapy by carrying brands from Gap to Gucci, including Anthropologie and Ann Taylor. Consignors bring in clothing from Littleton and Wyoming, even ship it from New York City, and shoppers appreciate the helpful staff’s honest guidance regarding fit and fashion. It is not uncommon for a group of friends to pass four hours or more looking at all the fabulous things on the racks and in the home furnishings department. “There are so many little nooks and crannies in the store with something beautiful to rest your eyes on everywhere you look,” says Edelen.

40

Boulder Lifestyle | July 2015

GIVING IN THE COMMUNITY

Consignors can designate at intake whether they want to receive a check or store credit for the proceeds of the items they consign. While some use this money to fund family vacations, many instead choose to have the money or item (if unsold) passed on to a charity. The recipient list is long and includes options like Hospice Care, Soles 4 Souls, Hover Community Senior Living, the Women’s Foundation of Colorado and Habitat for Humanity. NEW LOCATION PLANNED

Edelen’s next move is to open a specialized thrift boutique in a new, separate location from the main store. The location is yet to be determined, but the plan is to carry clothing for men, women and children, housewares and more with a portion of all proceeds being donated to A Woman’s Work, a timely fund for women in need throughout the St. Vrain Valley. Estimated timing for the new shop is late 2015 or early 2016.

“There are so many little nooks and crannies in the store with something beautiful to rest your eyes on everywhere you look,” says Edelen.

Seeds Harvesting Community & Connection ARTICLE EMILY O’BRIEN

here’s a new café located inside the Main Boulder Public Library, sandwiched between the children’s wing and the Canyon Theatre. Seeds Library Café is a farm-to-table eatery that launched at the end of April with a commitment to spend 75 percent of its food costs locally. A partnership between the Library and Boulder County Farmers Markets, Seeds provides a seasonal and locally-roasted coffee menu, as well as fresh sandwiches, salads, soups and delectable pastries. The space itself is vibrant, bright and family-friendly, while the floor-to-ceiling windows give way to stunning views of Boulder Creek. The architecture has a way of making you feel as though you are dangling from above. CONTINUED >

Marketing Manager Katie Lazor says, “Seeds Library Cafe is an exciting collaboration between the Boulder County Farmers Markets non-profit and the Main Boulder Public Library. We are a year-round café focused on local agriculture, with a commitment to connect people with their food and drink through local sourcing, education and events. We’re a voice for local agriculture, a reflection of our unique community, and a meeting place for collaboration.” Current local sourcing partners include Ela Family Farms, Monroe Organic Farm, Rocky Mountain Fresh, Jodar Farms, Aspen Moon Farm, Ollin Farms, Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy, and Breadworks Bakery. BOULDER FARMERS MARKET

Along with locally-sourced ingredients, café goers can scope out the Marketplace, a section where local items from the farmers market are available for purchase. “In the Marketplace (our to-go cooler), we also source fresh, bagged produce from the farmers market, like cherry tomatoes, bags of spinach, a bunch of radishes, etc.,” says Lazor. The Marketplace does more than just provide library patrons with fresh produce, dairy and proteins directly from the small, family farms that set up shop at the Boulder Farmers Market; it extends the farmers’ voice (and that of agriculture) to a city hub. “It’s a snapshot of what’s in season locally,” says Lazor. Breakfast items off the menu include the Market Breakfast Burrito, which contains farmfresh eggs scrambled and wrapped with veggies ($4.99), Muffins ($2.99) and Scones ($1.99). There’s also a full coffee bar sourced with Silver Canyon Coffee, which is roasted in Boulder, Colorado. Other items on the Seeds menu include the Market Beet salad ($5.99), Maple-Glazed Ham & Cheese on a Challah ($7.99) and freshly made, seasonal soups ($4.99 bowl). Even the little ones can get in on the action. Seeds may very well have the healthiest kids menu in Boulder with items like the Sunflower Sammie which is a sunflower seed spread with apple butter ($3.99) and Little Dippers which are veggie sticks and bread bites served with housemade hummus ($3.99). BRIDGE HOUSE

Seeds also partners with Bridge House—an organization that provides 70,000 meals a year to homeless men and women in Boulder—to create its soups and assist with catering needs. Bridge House receives produce selected by Seeds, prepares soups and sides, and delivers them back to Seeds (at least two seasonal soups are served daily). The soups and sides are prepared by men and women participating in Bridge House's Ready-To-Work program. “It’s truly a team effort,” says Lazor. “They’re always there to jump in and help us. We really believe in what they do, and it’s great that we can help support homeless transition back into the workforce.” CONTINUED >

MAIN BOULDER PUBLIC LIBRARY

Since opening, Seeds will continue to go through several more phases. It’s still fine-tuning its local sourcing and curating food items. In addition to its catering launch this month, other educational workshops, panel talks and film screenings in Canyon Theatre will be in full effect. Last month’s theme was water; topics will continue to rotate throughout the year. The main focus is to connect people to local agriculture. Look for an upcoming collaboration with farmers and story time in the form of picnics. Pop up dinners may also be in the works. Brian Coppom, Executive Director of Boulder County Farmers Markets, says, "Eating locally is about much more than the need to be nourished. It's also about our need for community and connection. We're excited to tie together all of these qualities with the café, and to support the local food system by sourcing the vast majority of the food from local growers and processors." “It’s really nice to see in your sandwich how the bread is sourced locally, the chicken and even the pesto,” Lazor says. “Our hope is that everyone who comes here learns something about the food we’re eating.”

Pontus Jakobson, Owner of Bjorn Honey

n Colorado there has been quite a buzz about beekeeping. It’s no longer a hidden craft unknown and unseen to the public; its only evidence visible through plastic honey bears lining the grocery store shelves. Recently, there has been a renaissance in urban beekeeping on the Front Range, and new hobbyists are learning the ancient art of hive tending. This movement is not only producing locally sourced liquid gold, but is also saving the hardworking honeybees from environmental dangers that could be detrimental to American crops. Pontus Jakobsson, owner of Bjorn’s Colorado Honey in Boulder, is a third generation beekeeper. He brought along his immense knowledge of bees when he moved to the United States from Sweden in 2013. Shortly after moving to Boulder, he started producing local Front Range honey. His grandfather, Bjorn, started successful apiaries in Sweden 70 years ago. He grew up around bees and learned this unique craft by helping his grandfather with his apiaries, which were eventually taken over by Jakobsson’s parents, Torbjorn and Monica Jakobsson. Considering he has been around bees for the past 22 years, he is the perfect educator and supporter for new local bee enthusiasts. “It’s amazing the explosion of beekeeping in Colorado. There are so many young people that have an interest in beekeeping and they are very educated about bees’ health,” says Jakobsson. “Growing up in Sweden it was the older generations that were interested in bees, and today I have 10-15 year olds coming up to me who know so much about bees.” It’s an encouraging sign that younger generations are rallying for the under-appreciated pollinators ever since colony collapse disorder was first classified in 2006. Colony collapse disorder is the phenomenon when the majority of worker bees abandon their hive, which is a serious concern for U.S. agriculture. “With colony collapse disorder it looks like a good hive, but a week afterwards they just leave which is something that we have never seen happen with other diseases,” Jakobsson says. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bees pollinate 80 percent of flowering crops, which is about onethird of our food source. Without honeybees, say goodbye to some of your favorite fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus, blueberries and cherries to name a few. And of course flowering gardens and honey’s gooey goodness will be something of the past here in the States. “Last year the average loss of beehives was 35 percent and this year it increased to 45 percent. They leave everything behind; the larvae, the honey, the pollen and the queen. The bees are just gone,” says Jakobsson. This is something that has been baffling scientists who are desperately searching for the mysterious cause of colony CONTINUED >

collapse disorder. Most fingers point to everyday pesticides, but whatever the cause is, it’s time to start coming up with solutions. SUPPORT THE BUSY BEE

The best way that individuals in the community can help is by simply supporting local beekeepers. Purchase locally crafted bee products that are available at stores and farmer markets. Honey is the perfect natural sweetener for food and drinks, and can be used in other beneficial ways. “Honey itself is one of the best moisturizers for lotions. Honey is also a natural antiseptic because of the high sugar content. It works like Neosporin for cuts, wounds and cracked fingers,” says Jakobsson who also sells BeeCareNatura, a line of natural European skin care products. And for allergies, honey can be your homeopathic solution to seasonal suffering. Native honey is full of enzymes and pollen that desensitizes your system to local allergies, and it doesn’t cause any drowsiness like typical allergy medicines. If you are interested in joining the club and are considering beekeeping, there are plenty of resources to get you started, including classes, workshops, lectures and a whole community to network with. Since Denver city council passed an ordinance in 2008 allowing up to two hives per lot, plenty of families and individuals are discovering the rewarding benefits of working with bees. Including Toby Odell and Tess Dougherty who took care of their first hive in the backyard of their Denver home last April. “Bees are really fascinating species and they can teach us a lot about the world in general. Just observing them and their patterns, behaviors and how they communicate with each other are some of the most fun parts, and is something that the two of us didn’t know about before so it’s a huge learning experience,” says Tess Dougherty. Just make sure you do a solid amount of research before becoming a bee caretaker because it’s more than just tending a hive, beekeeping comes with the same amount of responsibility as bringing a new pet into the home. “They will always be my pets. We care for them and make sure they have a good life,” says Jakobsson. “Every time you look into a beehive they are all different. To really make sure they are healthy and happy you have to find every single beehives special needs.” CONTINUED >

GARDENERS CAN BEE-FRIEND BEES WITH THESE GARDENING TIPS

Feed the Bees: (courtesy of Colorado State Beekeepers Association) Spring Bloomers Christmas Rose Helleborus orientalis Thrift Armeria maritima (Native) Chives Allium shoenoprasum Stone Crop Sedum spathufolium (Native) Fringe Cup Tellima grandiflora (Native) Summer Bloomers Lupin Lupinus polyphylus (Native) Rose Rosa “Frau Dagmar Hartopf” Lavender Lavandula angustifolia Black Eyed Susan Rudbeckia fulgida “Goldsturm” Helen’s Flower Helenium autumnale (Native) • Provide a Fresh Water Source: Bees need fresh water like any animal. Place shallow water bowls with twigs and rocks around the garden so hardworking bees can get a drink. • Do Not Use Pesticides, Herbicides or other Chemicals in your Garden: These chemicals are toxic to bees and other native pollinators. Only use organic fertilizers and pesticides and rely on spiders, praying mantises and ladybugs that will naturally take care of unwanted pests.

ig Top Pops was born out of a need for a creative outlet, a love for our local Farmers Market, and a wicked talent for ice pop making. As best friends and college roommates, Sarah Robertson and Gina Latimer have nothing but pure fun running Big Top Pops together. "We're especially grateful for the opportunity to connect with our community members at the Farmers Markets in Boulder and Longmont," says Sarah. Their credo is "Simple Goodness" and most of their ice pops are made with four ingredients or less, all natural and recognizable and frequently sourced from local farms. "We're happy to say that the majority of our flavors are also dairy-free and vegan and we handcraft each pop with simplicity, care and goodness. We're honored to deliver them into the expectant hands of children and (children at heart) of all ages," says Sarah. You can find them under their striped Big Top umbrella at the Boulder County Farmers Markets during the months of June-September. Big Top Pops are also available at Lolita's Market & Deli (800 Pearl St.) and the Organic Sandwich Company (16th and Pearl). Coming to even more locations this summer 2015. ometimes great businesses are sparked by merging two loves together. That’s exactly what happened with ShutterBus when co-owner Travis Ramos pitched the idea to his wife (and current business partner) Laura Ramos regarding combining their joint photography business with their love for VWs into one entity. Laura and Travis had, after all, spent many hours during previous years traveling inside and renovating (mostly outside or under the hood) Guanella—a vintage orange 1974 Volkswagen Bus. Guanella came with an orange plaid interior, a camper setup complete with a pop-top roof containing a bunk bed, and a price of only $400. Travis thought she would be the perfect wedding present to give to Laura, feeling it epitomized their future endeavor together. Never mind the fact that neither knew anything about VWs at the time. Soon—after multiple putters, sputters and breakdowns— that became history. “VWs have always been really special to us and a part of who we are,” says Laura. “We’re not your average photo booth.” And she’s right. I mean, how cool could The ShutterBus be? It’s a photo booth tucked neatly inside a vintage VW bus. This one is called Nelly and she’s a spunky, vintage-modern 1978 Volkswagen Bus-turned-Mobile-Photo-Booth, which they’ve restored. ShutterBus launched in the spring and has been bustling around town snapping photos of friends and families at weddings, graduation parties and street fairs. Here’s how it works: partygoers hop in the bus (alone or with friends or family), push the “go” button and voila—the camera takes a series of four shots and high-quality photo strips print out. The bus can fit six people into what they consider a decent picture to be, any more and it’s just too crowded. Everyone who is in the pictures receives their own photo strips, and photos are also uploaded to a Facebook (private or public) gallery. “It really helps people loosen up and can take a dry event to the next level,” says Laura. There’s also an ever-growing bag of props, complete with funny hats, glasses and mustaches to help aid in the silliness. The bus is available to book for Denver, Boulder and the Colorado Front Range area. In fact, it’ll even travel into the mountains for an event depending on the date and distance. Laura says, “When you are dressed in a funny hat and making silly faces…you just can’t help but laugh!" ShutterBus.com 70

Boulder County's locally owned and operated flooring source serves residential and commercial clients in need of new, traditional and eco-friendly products. Go Green’s showroom offers an extensive array of recycled products with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including carpet, hardwood, cork and vinyl, and plank flooring and with a widespread line of under cushion products. To take the guesswork out of going green with flooring, we’ve broken down some of the most popular choices to see how they rank on the eco-friendly scale. Check out these green flooring solutions sold right in our own backyard.

LUXURY VINYL

While most luxury vinyl is created with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Go Green offers chloride-free alternatives also known as “virgin vinyl.” Team it up with a no-VOC core made of limestone and wood for an affordable, earthy-friendly option that’s completely waterproof. 74

MARMOLEUM

All natural linoleum made from linseed oil, wood flour, rosin, jute and limestone—entirely derived from natural and sustainable products. Marmoleum does not contain any harmful VOC’s and is easy on the environment during the production process. It is also simple to install and maintain.

CORK

Harvested every seven years from trees grown primarily in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean, cork has high acoustic and anti-microbial properties and is one of the most sustainable flooring materials available today.

STRAND WOVEN BAMBOO

This incredibly durable material is 27 percent harder than oak, making it an ideal option for high traffic areas. Bamboo grass is harvested every seven years and is an excellent low VOC option. Strand woven bamboo is offered in floating or nail down options, and many colors and stains.

CARPET

Who doesn’t love soft carpet under their toes? Many options include low to no-VOCs and are sold without mothproofing chemicals. Buying a carpet with natural jute or rubber backing also helps the environment. SmartStrand is a good choice, which is made from corn polymer fiber, has built-in stain and soil protection, and is unbelievably soft.

HARDWOOD

You can find hardwood prefinished and unfinished options with no added formaldehyde. Try hardwoods with Forest Stewardship Council certification, also known as FSC certified. Or look for green hardwood flooring; it’s made from salvaged or reclaimed wood. Think recovered forest deadwood, sunken logs from rivers and lakes or reclaimed from old warehouse or buildings.

e asked real high school seniors for advice on how they made their personalities shine in their senior portraits. Here's what some had to say..

statement. Instead, try to make use of location, lighting and props to make your photos unique. A quaint diner paired with a blue dress and a simple cat eye makes for a dramatic and striking portrait, despite the ease of preparation.

MARI:

A FEW TIPS FROM PHOTOGRAPHER MOLLY SEELING:

"Make sure your photo reflects who you are. So don't do crazy hair or makeup or wear clothing that you wouldn't normally wear. I think seniors should wear clothes that they already own. Buying new clothes is fun, but I ended up with several pieces of clothing that I wouldn't wear in real life. And trust your photographer. They will be so great directing you to help you get a great photo and be comfortable in front of the camera."

- On clothing: Choose clothes that you are comfortable in and that fit you well. You don't want to be constantly tugging at a hemline or fiddling with a strapless dress. Your clothing should be tight enough that it doesn't look baggy or shapeless, but loose enough that it doesn't cause the fabric to bunch or bulge in odd places when you move or sit. Try on your outfits a few days before, and make sure that you have the appropriate undergarments: a camisole for under a sheer shirt, or a strapless or nude bra, for example. - Avoid the sun for the week before your session. Sunburns and tan lines can be tough to fix, and your photographer may charge extra to edit these out. - Try adding a pop of bright color! Whether it's a brightly-colored scarf or a pair of statement earrings, bright colors photograph really well and can work well with even neutral-colored or minimalist outfits. A brighter lip color also photographs really well - if this fits with your personality, go for it!

LIZZIE:

"One tip - timeless doesn't always mean boring! Many people will say it's important to keep your clothing basic, (no one wants to look back and regret cheesy trends, right?) but that doesn't mean your pictures have to look like everyone else's. You can still add your own personal flair. I think a good way to do that is to let your clothing compliment your natural shapes and colors, and don't get too caught up in the idea that you have to find outfits that make a 78

He brings a sly drawl to a funky workout and an elegant delicacy to his music.
