Time to Make Good on Another Promise I

remember it like it was May 24, 1985. In fact that was the date when I returned to my Austin, Texas hotel room at 12:30 a.m. after having been at work for 15 hours. With me was my bedtime snack of a beastly burger, mountain of fries and extra-large, sugary-sweet soft drink. And a chocolate shake for dessert. I looked at the “meal” and thought to myself, “this is no way to live.” Then I proceeded to ingest every last morsel before calling it a day. When I woke up I vowed never to eat another fast-food hamburger. It’s a promise that I have kept for more than three decades. Pizza, doughnuts and fried chicken? That’s another story. The truth is I could stand to lose 5-10 pounds. Ok, 15. All right, all right, 20 but not an ounce more! I’m revealing this because I think it would be somewhat disingenuous to brag about the Health & Fitness issue of Brentwood Lifestyle as if I were some sort of fitness fanatic. I’m not. I’ve made attempts from time-to-time. But I’m just so busy. One of the interesting things I learned while producing this issue is just how easy it is in Brentwood to get fit, and have a good time doing it, just by visiting one of the fabulous parks. I’m making a promise right here to visit each park at least once between now and the end of the year. If I can lay off the fast-food all these years, certainly I can take advantage of the recreational resources in my adopted hometown. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a residential area, a business district or the surrounding countryside, if you’re in Brentwood, there’s a park nearby. I’m not issuing any challenges. I can do this myself. But if you’re in a similar situation and want to share your experiences, let us hear from you. It’s easy to do so there really aren’t any excuses. It'll be like a walk in the park.

SPRINGTIME LANDSCAPING

PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT WITH PROPER SEASONAL MAINTENANCE ARTICLE JODI RALL | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

I

s your yard ready for spring? Homeowners invest in having beautiful shrubs and plants added to their yard, however maintaining their landscaping is something that is often overlooked. Chris Crenshaw, owner of Crenshaw Landscaping, LLC, started his company in 1989 providing custom landscaping installation for Nashville, Brentwood, Murfreesboro, Cool Springs, and all of Middle Tennessee. He shares his advice on both proper maintenance and how you can add beauty to your outdoor living space. Crenshaw believes proper care of a lawn and plant beds will preserve the health and longevity of your outdoor areas so that you can enjoy them for countless years to come. Investing in landscaping allows you to enjoy the beauty of your outdoor living space and, in the long run, increases your property value if maintained. One easy way to prepare your plant beds for spring is by spreading mulch around your shrubs and trees. The purpose of mulch is to keep the sunlight off the soil to prevent weed germination and provide a blanket of protection against moisture loss. Because of the heat in Middle Tennessee, the soil dries out and it becomes important to have at least two inches of mulch to allow

18

Brentwood Lifestyle | April 2016

the soil underneath the plants to hold and retain moisture. Checking your hedges, shrubs and trees’ leaves can tell you if your plants are healthy. New leaf growth indicates healthy plants. If your shrubs or trees are not producing new leaves, or appear to be dead or dying, it’s time to call a professional. One indicator that a plant is in distress would be the appearance of small black dots. The appearance of these dots could be Azalea Lace bugs. If the dots are appearing on new leaf growth, you need to explore your treatment options. If you have boxwoods in your yard, May is the time to run your hands over the shrub to look for mosquito-looking boxwood leaf miner adults that lay eggs in the spring’s new leaf growth. As bugs like the protection of the leaves, turn the leaf over and use a hand magnifier of 5x to see them. Crenshaw emphasizes the importance of early intervention. “Most often when we get the calls is after the plant is too sick to treat. At that point replacement is the only option. Some companies offer tree and shrub-protection spray programs. This might be a good investment." If investing in new plants or shrubs for your yard, Crenshaw highly recommends his new favorite, the Abelia "kaleidoscope" or the Hydrangea Annabelle. These plants offer beautiful blooms and rely on new growth in spring. If you currently have Hydrangea's in your yard, this is the time of year, especially for the French Hydrangeas, that you need to add ammonia sulfate to maintain the beautiful, blue-blooming color. A Ph average of 7.2 is what Crenshaw and his team consider basic, however Hydrangeas, azaleas and hollies prefer a soil Ph in the 6.5 range. A beautiful yard is something to be enjoyed. This may be the reason that there has been a growth in outdoor living rooms and living areas as people want to shift their living from inside to outside effortlessly. “Paver patios and seat-height walls, with screening and blooming landscape plants and trees, are the easiest ways to create a new outside room,” says Crenshaw. By following a few simple tips, and keeping an eye on your yard’s health, you can bask in the beauty of your outdoor living space, all season long. Chris Crenshaw has his B.S. in Engineering Services from Vanderbilt University. He is the past president of the P.L.A.N.T (Professional Landscape Association of Nashville Tennessee) and is a current member of TNLA (Tennessee Nursery and Landscape Association). LEXUS OFFERS ITS FIRST TURBO IN THE NX 200T ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

A

woman stopped to talk as I was photographing the Lexus NX 200t. She is a Lexus owner and loved the fact that this compact crossover looks like a Darth Vader mask. I, on the other hand, think the maw-like spindle grille and angular styling is so overdone and cartoonish that it doesn’t seem fitting for a luxury brand. So that’s the NX 200t’s styling in a nutshell: you either like it or you don’t. Lexus clearly wants to appeal to a young audience and shed past criticism that its cars were not sporty enough. A similarly polarizing design is also found on the new RX350. With that gripe out of the way, it’s time to look closer. Design aside, the NX 200t appeals to me on many levels. Its 104.7-inch wheelbase is the same as the Toyota RAV4. Dimensionally, it is 2.4 inches longer, .6 inches lower and 1 inch wider than the RAV. The NX200t is handy because it is easy to maneuver, has a frugal 2.0liter engine and its price won’t break the bank. Prices start at $34,865 for front-wheel drive and $36,265 for allwheel drive. The F-Sport model has a more aggressive front grille and bumper, special wheels and sport seats. Prices start at $36,965 for frontwheel drive and $38,365 for all-wheel drive. I drove an all-wheel-drive F-Sport from the Lexus press fleet and its sticker price was $43,988. Typical of Lexus, the NX 200t has a first-rate level of fit, finish and quality of materials. The cabin is a tad small but the front seats, covered in two-tone leather, were attractive and quite comfortable. The split-folding rear seat also reclines. The rear hatch is big enough for sizable items, and a power option is available. The instrument panel has an LCD screen atop the center stack and it displays audio and navigation information. A “remote touch interface” pad on the console replaces the former mouse-like joystick on

earlier models. The square pad responds to movements of your finger much like the touchpad of a laptop. I’m a fairly tech savvy person who embraces new technology but I found the touchpad and system interface were not nearly as easy to use as a mouse-like controller. Inside the center console is a Qi-compatible wireless charging tray for smartphones although it does not work with iPhones. Lexus says the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is its first. It has a four-intotwo exhaust manifold that pairs cylinders according to their compression stroke and that reduces turbo lag. Throttle response was nearly as linear as that of a normally aspirated engine. With 235 horsepower under foot, the NX 200t accelerated briskly and cruised comfortably at highway speeds. The all-wheel drive system uses front-wheel drive during normal cruising. When conditions require more traction, the system engages the rear differential and up to 50 percent of available torque can be sent to the rear wheels. This system also helps the vehicle during cornering. A hybrid version, the NX300h, starts at $39,720 for front-wheel drive and $41,310 for all-wheel drive. It combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with three electric motors. One charges the hybrid battery, one drives the front wheels and one drives the rear wheels. Total power output is 348 horsepower. Fuel economy is rated at 33 in the city and 30 on the highway. WARRANTY: Four years or 50,000 miles, with a six-year, 70,000mile powertrain warranty. PRICE: The base price of the test car was $36,965. Options included the Qi-compatible wireless charging tray, Homelink garage door opener, 18-inch F-Sport wheels, navigation, auto-dimming outside mirrors, power tailgate and the F-Sport package of heated front seats, power sunroof, tilt/telescoping steering wheel and 10-way driver’s seat. The sticker price was $43,988. POINT: The NX 200t is a small crossover vehicle that is easy to maneuver, gets good gas mileage and has 235 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The fit and finish are excellent. COUNTERPOINT: For me, the bold styling overshadows the vehicle’s strong points.

ollow the sounds of professionals happily clinking glasses, chatting and munching on chips and salsa in Brentwood on any given night and you’re likely to find yourself on the patio at Local Taco, a Brentwood institution since 2009. Since its opening, Local Taco has become an important fixture on the Brentwood dining scene. The restaurant has developed a devoted following throughout the area with a regular built-in crowd that keeps coming back for more. “We love Brentwood and Brentwood loves chef-inspired tacos and fresh-squeezed Rita’s,” says Tim Kohler, chief operating officer of Local Taco. Mexican food has traditionally been a popular cuisine throughout the Nashville area, but when Local Taco opened, they introduced a whole new take on traditional south-of-the-border fare. Featuring eclectic chef-inspired tacos, locally-sourced ingredients and hand-crafted cocktails, Local Taco combines the flash of Tex-Mex flavors with the tradition and character of Southern food culture. “I believe we are a ‘come as you are and feel comfortable’ restaurant,” says Kohler. “Our food is fresh and fun to enjoy with friends. Whether you are going out with your friends, kids, date night or straight from the golf course, our atmosphere encompasses an environment where all are welcome.” With a diverse mix of flavors and styles, the menu features several items that you’d never find on a traditional Mexican restaurant menu. Unique highlights include: Korean BBQ tacos, House-smoked Brisket tacos, Southern Fried Chicken tacos, Buffalo Chicken tacos, Philly Cheese Steak tacos, Smoked Salmon tacos and Mexi Tater Tots with smoked jalapeño aioli. In addition, the drink menu features freshsqueezed margaritas, red or white sangria, handcrafted cocktails and a variety of upscale tequilas. Local Taco’s Brentwood location is one of eight restaurants in the Nashville-based regional chain’s geographic footprint. The popular chain has expanded from its three Nashville locations to

Lexington, Ky. and Greenville, S.C. This summer it stretches into Alabama with new restaurants opening in Birmingham and Huntsville. Kohler attributes the Brentwood location’s success to its consistency, locally-sourced products and its popular, hard-working general manager, Anne Claire. “She’s at the top of her game on guest satisfaction and building and maintaining our Brentwood guest following,” says Kohler. “She has been instrumental in keeping our concept fresh.” In addition to providing a unique lunch place for people working in Brentwood and Maryland Farms, the restaurant also offers a value-driven catering service for the entire Brentwood area. The service is available for all sorts of events from business lunches to weddings and catered parties. Building on its tremendous following in the Brentwood area, Local Taco is intent on providing an even richer environment for its guests by remodeling and improving both the interior and exterior of the restaurant. They’re also gearing up to revamp their happy hour offerings with a newly developed craft cocktail list. Local Taco is poised to continue pleasing its loyal Brentwood following now, and well into the future. For more information on Local Taco, including locations, hours and menus, visit LocalTaco.com.

pring has finally sprung. With it comes warmer weather, blooming flowers, chirping birds and, unfortunately, the onslaught of fleas and Brentwood Vets, Dr. Brooke ticks. Make sure your Frautschy and Dr. Matt Wall. pets are protected as you prepare to enjoy more time outside. Dr. Matt Wall with Brentwood Veterinary Clinic believes springtime pet care is more important than you may think. He says, “Fleas and ticks can cause a variety of problems for dogs and cats. Fleas commonly cause allergic dermatitis that can lead to troublesome itching, skin infections and hot spots. Ingesting fleas can also cause tapeworms to develop inside dogs and cats.” In addition, “Tick borne diseases such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever are present in this region so preventing tick infestations is a vital aspect of good pet care.” PUT FLEAS AND TICKS Our climate and heavy wildlife populaON NOTICE WITH tion makes it possible to find fleas and ticks PREVENTIVE CARE on your pets throughout the year, however peak season in middle Tennessee ranges ARTICLE HOLLY COWAN from March to November. “Warmer temPHOTOGRAPHY ED ATLAS peratures and more time outside increase contact with fleas, ticks, and the wildlife that serve as reservoirs,” said Dr. Wall. Wall says, “It's important to know your pet's environment and the likelihood of coming into contact with these parasites. Animals most at risk include those that live near woods or go to parks, barns, dog parks, and farms.” Your veterinarian can help determine which preventive medications are best for your pet, but you should also note the risks to people when proper precautions aren’t taken. “Fleas prefer dogs and cats yet they will occasionally bite humans and cause discomfort. Also, pets can bring ticks into the house that may then bite people and potentially transmit diseases,” said Dr. Wall. It’s easy to determine if your pet is suffering from fleas if you see the parasites on them, or when your dog or cat seems to itch and chew on their body. However, Dr. Wall states, “Even ear infections, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping can be caused by flea bites. Also, fleas on cats can be harder to identify since they tend to be more stoic than dogs.” Ticks can be more difficult to discover but signs to look for are lethargy and general discomfort, as well as localized swelling at the site of the tick bite. If you suspect your pet has fleas or ticks your first step should be to contact your veterinarian. According to Dr. Wall, “Treatments can include addition or alteration of your current flea and tick preventatives, medicated shampoos, and dewormers. More advanced diseases can require diagnostics and treatments that can increase the cost significantly. Also, a flea infestation in your home can take up to three months to fully resolve.” Prevention is the most effective form of parasite control. And by keeping fleas and ticks at bay this spring, you and your fourlegged friends can spend your time getting the most out of the season.

Move Your Body FITNESS IS GOOD FOR LIFE.

ARTICLE EMMA CRIBB PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

e all know many reasons why we should exercise: strengthening the heart, lungs, bones, joints and muscles. Improving our stamina and immune system. Raising our self-esteem. Maintaining a healthy weight. But we can all relate to the reasons why we don’t exercise. We’re over-scheduled, over-stressed, overwhelmed or under the weather. And, exercise is one more annoying thing we have to put energy, time and money into. What’s really needed is a change of perspective. First of all, it is not selfish to take good care of yourself. It is, in fact, selfless to feel good, be strong, healthy, calm and flexible. You’ll be happier, more productive and energized when being of service to others. Your boss and customers demand it. Your kids require it. Your aging parents depend on it. Your communities will benefit from it. I’ve always enjoyed working out and training. But being healthy became so much more important when I became a mother. I knew I needed to exercise for my long-term health and stamina to handle life as a mother, wife and professional. There are many ways to increase your daily activity level without compromising your limited resources, including time. Now that it’s spring, take a walk or ride a bike. Do a simple strength routine at home (you don’t need any equipment); follow along to a brief, gentle yoga video. Get up from your desk more often to stretch and move your body and clear your mind. There are even exercises you can do while sitting at work. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Being physically active is a proactive way to prevent many medical issues: orthopedic, neurological, autonomic, gastrointestinal, metabolic, pathological, gynecological, respiratory, cardiovascular and even cancer. And if you’re a person of faith or spiritual in any way, consider this: How can we honor God and show gratitude to Him for the amazingly complex and miraculous physical body that He’s given us? Move it and respect it. Explore all the ways you can strengthen, stretch, balance, mold, wiggle, shimmy and shake your body. You have endless options for exercising. Talk to your friends, go to your local community center or gym. Visit a
