Lifestyle Letter

Let's (not) hear it for the Groom!

MAY 2016 publisher

Donald Hawkins | Donald.Hawkins@LifestylePubs.com

S

omeone once told me that, from the groom’s perspective, there are three keys to a successful marriage: • Be a good sport at the reception. • Have fun on the honeymoon. • Wait to die. As someone who has made more than one trip to the altar, I can tell you there is wisdom in those words. Like appetizer trays and floral arrangements, the groom is just another prop in his bride’s fairy tale-come-true. All he really has to do is be on time and make sure his rental cummerbund faces the right way. (I always thought that if I got married again, I’d wear mine pleats down. Just to see if anyone would check. But that’d be an expensive way to find out.) No one seems more out of place than the groom on his wedding day. Few people on Earth are less significant. Several years ago I was in Waikiki and happened to walk past one of those large resorts that grinds out weddings and receptions like so many sausages. A cacophony emanated from the entrance and, to no one’s surprise (at least not mine), it was a dozen cackling bridesmaids. Followed by the beaming bride herself. Farther behind, and looking somewhat defeated, was the groom and his best man. The latter proved his worth by sharing a generous swig from his flask. It was 9:30 on Sunday morning. It’s worth noting that this was a Japanese wedding. Because across the continents and cultures, one thing is constant: Grooms don’t matter. I have to admit to feeling a sense of brotherhood with the poor fellow. It would be impossible to provide a complete account of all the moving parts-andpieces that went into producing this edition of Brentwood Lifestyle. So let’s just say that Nashville-based event coordinator Bruce Pittman is the guy who gets things done. With Bruce, no corners are cut and nothing less than excellence is accepted. On a personal note, writing about last year’s Anderson-Gill wedding was unlike any story I have covered. Aside from being exceedingly gracious with her time and photos, Sarah Anderson Gill is the daughter of Becky Lee Anderson, my high school friend and classmate from Louisville, Ky. Until recently, Becky and I hadn’t seen each other since the day we graduated and had no idea that we both settled in Williamson County. To talk to her daughter, and to discover years after the fact that our lives followed similar paths, is one of those amazing stories that make life so interesting.

The 11 hospitals are located in nine different states and were honored for a wide range of services including cancer care, obstetrics, emergency care, bariatric surgery, breast centers, patient experience, and patient safety. The “America’s Best Hospitals” hospitals and doctors demonstrate exceptional ratings, providing the highest level of care and commitment to their patient’s health. This award is the only designation that is based on the preferences of women when selecting a hospital. “This recognition is more significant than ever before as more consumers utilize resources such as Women’s Choice Awards to determine the best places to receive care for themselves and their family,” said Quorum President and CEO Mickey Bilbrey. “We are honored to be associated with so many facilities that are continually recognized for providing remarkable care to the communities they serve.” The Women’s Choice Award represents the significance of the

TESTIMONIAL - Joan S., Nashville, TN “Before I came to Neurogenx, I had burning and numbness in my feet and legs. My hands had tingling, numbness and swelling. I had difficulty walking, standing for a long period of time and at times couldn’t pick up a piece of paper. I couldn’t do my favorite pastime, sewing. After four weeks, the burning in my legs is gone. Most of the numbness is gone. I can go on walks with my husband. I can walk up and down stairs. I feel the bottoms of my feet and my toes! Best of all, I can sew without my hands hurting! I’m also looking forward to being pill free! Neurogenx has really helped me.”

W

ith Mother’s Day arriving May 8, it’s the perfect time for Karen Fuqua to pay special tribute to her own mom. That’s because her mother inspired the name for Fuqua’s innovative home décor shop which opened in Brentwood last November. Fuqua explains. “My mother taught me at an early age the value of hosting guests in our home. She grew up in Nashville and passed her southern style on to me. My mom took great care in the details of entertaining, making sure guests had everything they needed. Her table was always set, lamps were on - never overhead lighting - and centerpieces displayed. She had a great eye for design, and still does, and knew how to incorporate that flair in a home.” So when Fuqua decided to open a home decorating store in Brentwood, the shop’s name came to her quite easily. “I named the store after my mother Maxine. Maxi after my mom, and B is for Bivens, my maiden name,” says Fuqua. So Maxi B. Home it was. How did Fuqua decide on Brentwood for her store’s location? “My parents lived in Brentwood and Franklin since 1974,” she says. "I looked at many areas for Maxi B. Home, but kept coming back to where I felt most at home. The city of Brentwood has been very supportive of Maxi B. And here in City Park, we have a close knit group of retailers and eateries. I love this about our area. I've lived in Brentwood and have many wonderful friends here." When it came to deciding on her store’s inventory, it was important to Fuqua that Maxi B. offer a wide array of home furnishings. “We have CONTINUED >

“I shopped the Dallas marketplace for my opening inventory," she says. "The market in Dallas is where I feel most comfortable, however I have attended other markets as well. At every market I am always looking for items that are different and will appeal to a diverse customer base.” When asked what has been the most enjoyable aspect of managing her store, Fuqua is quick to reply. “The best part of opening Maxi B. has been our customers. We have sorority sisters to YaYas shopping here. And we help pull together dorm rooms to board rooms, and everything in between. Making shopping fun is our goal.” Fuqua has been “pleasantly surprised” with the popularity of her store’s merchandise, and says if she had to choose, her favorite goods are tabletop, pillows and art.

“My biggest surprise since opening Maxi B. Home is how much fun we have every day," says Fuqua. "Don't get me wrong, retail isn't for sissies. But my employees and customers fuel my soul.” And based on her shop’s popularity, that feeling is mutual. Maxi B. Home is located at 7030 Executive Center Drive in Brentwood.

furniture, lighting, artwork, rugs, tabletop decorations and beautiful accessories," she says. "In addition we have ‘happys’ such as candles, soaps, lotions, books and many other gift selections." In addition to a wide array of merchandise, she also wanted the price-points of her goods to be cost-effective. “My desire was to have great pieces that are affordable for all generations." Once she nailed down her inventory and pricing, Fuqua looked beyond Nashville and even the state of Tennessee to furnish her store. 18

SAYING ‘I InDO’ Style

With Bruce Pittman Inc. A boutique specializing in the planning and design of weddings and social events ARTICLE LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOGRAPHY JEFF CARPENTER

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2016

E

ven as a young child, Bruce Pittman was surrounded by the aura of entertaining. “I

think I was destined to work in the hospitality industry, growing up in a family that entertained on a regular basis. Some of my earliest memories are being shown how to properly set a table and helping to prepare meals in the kitchen,” says Pittman. He adds that this, coupled with his growing passion for entertaining, essentially laid the foundation for opening his own catering company 17 years ago. He adds, “At the time, event planners were not as prevalent as they are today. Catering weddings was the backbone of my business.” Pittman explains that over the years, his desire to enhance his brand led to transitioning his business into Bruce Pittman Inc., a wedding and event planning “boutique” that allows him to work with clients on a much more personal level. “I have heightened the planning experience for couples and feel strongly about being the person clients work with from start to finish, rather than assigning them to an alternate planner after contracting with my company,” he explains. Today Pittman plans approximately 30 weddings annually as part of the Bruce Pittman Inc. (BPI) Collection, in addition to numerous fundraising balls and galas. PLANNING A WEDDING IN THE “IT” CITY

When meeting a couple for the first time, Pittman says there are three things that need to be accomplished almost immediately. The first is to create a wedding budget tailored to each couple’s specific wants and needs. Next is to identify and contract the venue, since on average venues are being reserved 17 months in advance. Last, identify and contract hotel room blocks. Says Pittman, “With Nashville's convention business growth, hotel room blocks have become challenging for the most part to obtain, with some hotels booking out a year in advance. “Nashville has been, and still is, the ‘it’ city. Interesting enough, I plan more destination weddings in Nashville than marriages of couples living here,” says Pittman. “It’s now common place for venues to contract Friday and Sunday weddings in addition to the traditional Saturday weddings. Couples begin reaching CONTINUED >

out to me 12 months in advance at minimum, with 18 months in advance becoming the norm.” Pittman

shares

that

according

to

costofawedding.com, the average wedding in the United States totals $26,444, with couples typically spending between $19,833 and $33,055. But he adds that many couples will spend less than $10,000. Weddings budgets utilizing the BPI Collection range from $40,000 to $100,000+. CHOOSE YOUR ‘A TEAM’ WISELY

Pittman also stresses the importance of choosing the right vendors to help plan the most important day of your life. He says, “The success and ease of executing your wedding lies in the hands of the wedding partners you contract, which I like to call your ‘A Team.’ Bringing partners on board who are credible and professional make all the difference.” These partners include the photographer, caterer, transportation services, rentals, florist, band/DJ and bakery. Once the foundation for a wedding is laid, Pittman says it’s time to enjoy planning the fine details which include: * Stationary identification. Save the dates, invitations, thank you cards, ceremony programs, menu cards and place cards. * Clothing identification. Wedding gown, bridesmaids dresses, tuxedos and suits. * Favor identification. This could be utilizing a traditional favor, or be a more creative option such as a late night snack. * Song selections. Prelude, ceremony, cocktail reception, traditional dances and post-dinner dance. * Design selections. In addition to rental and floral needs, an event diagram needs to be created along with linen selection, if needed, and final review and approval of the design plan.

When asked if he has worked with any celebrity clients, Pittman’s response is humble. “I have had the pleasure of working with clients in the past with recognizable names, but each couple I work with is considered a ‘top’ client. I have always practiced not capitalizing on a person or couple's ‘name’ to heighten my brand. Weddings are intimate occasions, celebrating the love between two people.” Cheers to that sentiment and to BPI. 24

Real Wedding: Sarah & Brad ARTICLE ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

S

arah Anderson was minding her own business when a green pickup truck rolled to a stop in front of her house that fateful spring evening about a decade ago. That’s when one of the vehicle’s occupants, Brad Gill, introduced himself and changed both of their lives forever. “I was hanging out with friends and these guys were piled into the truck. They got out and said they were looking for a place to go camping ” says Sarah, recalling the day she met the young man who would become her husband. “We lived in the same neighborhood and went to Brentwood High School but I didn’t know him. But my husband walked into my front yard, literally.” Sarah and Brad were separated by two years but they were never far apart. That is until Brad graduated and went away to college, a journey that lasted all of one semester. He returned home and enrolled at Belmont where Sarah joined him a year later. They’ve been together ever since. Given the way they met, became high school sweethearts and endured that agonizing semester apart, they practically had to get married. Screenplays aren’t written so sweet and so well. In fact, some writers might want to take notes from the way Brad proposed on Easter weekend two years ago. “I had an idea that it was coming but he surprised me nonetheless,” says Sarah. “We went out to dinner then he said, ‘let’s go for a drive.’ I said ‘OK’ but really wasn’t suspecting anything.”

32

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2016

They drove to Crockett Park where they went for a walk, and Brad proposed. Then, after a ring, a kiss and an embrace, their closest friends emerged from behind the nearby tree line. Among them was Sarah’s eventual maid of honor, Evan Galin, who Brad flew in for the occasion. Taylor Roth and Komron MacLean, who were to be Brad’s co-best men, were there, too. Just as they were in that old Ford F-150 so many years earlier. There was even a photographer, discreetly hidden, to capture it all. But when the celebration subsided, there was a wedding to plan.

By this time, Brad was in Memphis at the UT Health Sciences Center, studying to become a dentist. That left Sarah at home with her mom, Becky Anderson, to plan Sarah’s dream wedding. “Mom and I handled most of the details but Brad was involved with the big stuff, like the mood and the feel of the wedding,” says Sarah. “We wanted it to represent how we feel about each other and to tell our story. It was important that it be highly personal. We wanted everyone there to know that they were special to us.”

But a potential moment that would live in wedding infamy was averted, thanks to Joy Bridal Studio in Brentwood. Alterations were made so that Sarah could look the part of a princess. By the time the ceremony began, everything fell neatly into place. The bride and groom exchanged vows they wrote themselves. Friends and families made heartfelt toasts. The bourbon-glazed tenderloin was prepared perfectly. The Soul Searchers entertained, and guests danced for

Special touches included a single rosebud and “thank you” note to each guest. A floral cross at the altar was another significant element. “It was so beautiful and represented God in our relationship,” says Sarah. Sarah and Brad chose Riverwood Mansion because they wanted a wedding that was elegant but still very southern. “It was old and southern but it had that awesome, new-Nashville feel,” says Sarah. Sarah concedes that there were times that a formal wedding coordinator would have been beneficial. “I knew what I wanted; I’m a pretty decisive person, obviously. But the invitations, for example, were overwhelming. There are so many options. “Tiny details, like fonts, did not add a ton of detail but decisions had to be made. I’d stare at the font for hours and they all looked great. I don’t even remember which one I chose.” The days leading up to the wedding went off without much of a hitch. But they weren’t without a few nerve-wracking moments. “I was so excited in the weeks leading up to the wedding that I lost a lot of weight and three days before the wedding, my dress would not fit. It fell right off,” says Sarah.

hours. The newlyweds exited beneath a handheld sparkler-canopy, hopped in their limo and took the next jet to St. Lucia for a relaxing honeymoon. “It was so exciting and it was so awesome to finally be married,” says Sarah. Today the Gills are in Memphis where Sarah has joined Brad while while she studies to become a physical therapist. But she says it’s just a temporary layover. “Eventually, we’ll come back to Brentwood. This is our home. This is where we want to be.” May 2016 | Brentwood Lifestyle

Brentwood’s Wood-Fired Favorite FIREBIRDS WOOD FIRED GRILL RULES THE ROOST IN CUSTOMER SERVICE ARTICLE JAY WILKE | PHOTOGRAPHY BO BRADSHAW

W

hen you walk into Firebirds Wood Fired Grill for the first time, you are almost immediately reminded of a cozy ski lodge. And just for an instant, you may forget that you’re not in the mountains, but instead in the shadow of the LifePoint headquarters and the soon-to-be AIG building in Brentwood. Located at 700 Old Hickory Boulevard, Firebirds has been serving craft cocktails and wood-fired food to eager Brentwood crowds since 2014. “People always tell us that Brentwood needed something like this,” says managing partner Willie Bryan. “We’ve got a nice little niche here.” For Bryan, customer service is something that almost borders on obsession. You can find him most nights scanning the bar area and endlessly walking around the dining room, making sure that all of his guests are happy and satisfied. “Our customer service is relentless,” he says. “We want to touch every single table and make sure everything is right. Whatever it takes.” Now in his eighth year with the Charlotte-based Firebirds chain, Bryan has been at the helm at the Firebirds in Brentwood since it opened almost two years ago. As one of four Firebirds in the state, the Brentwood location features a more intimate atmosphere, which has proven to be very popular locally. “We’ve been received extremely well in Brentwood,” says Bryan. “Everyone here has been nothing but amazing to us. It’s a great area full of great people.” The restaurant’s culinary focus is on upscale American cuisine with a menu featuring hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, entrée salads, homemade soups, burgers and appetizers like Lobster Spinach Queso and Ranch Rings. 36

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2016

“We want to bring out the natural flavors of the food,” says Bryan. “We don’t over season and almost everything here is made from scratch.” The centerpiece of the kitchen is the restaurant’s signature wood fire grill. Exclusively using only locally-sourced oak and hickory, the grill helps enhance the flavors of popular dishes like the Wood Grilled Salmon, the restaurant’s top seller. For those in the mood for dessert, they have a Creme Brûlée Cheesecake, a flourless chocolate cake and their popular five-layer Big Daddy Chocolate Cake with raspberry sauce and chocolate ganache. With a slew of Happy Hour specials and exclusive “Bar Bites,” Firebirds is a popular after-work destination for Brentwood professionals. They always try to keep some local brews on tap and they also maintain an impressive array of seasonal handcrafted cocktails. The most popular cocktail in the house is the Double-Black Diamond Martini, made with fresh pineapple infused for 21 days with Svedka All Natural Citron Vodka. “It’s one of those drinks that gets people talking,” says Bryan. The extensive wine list at Firebirds is yet another reason why the bar area is often standing room only. The carefully curated wine list offers 62 different wines, including Firebirds own Private Label Red. Like most places in the Nashville area, there are aspiring musical artists on the Firebirds staff. Although they probably won’t sing for you, the outgoing and friendly staff is extremely knowledgeable about the restaurant’s food and wine list. “Some of our staff members have come out of the downtown scene and are settling down nicely in Brentwood,” says Bryan. “It’s so much more calm around here. “We work hard to create the right environment. We want to be that special place where people can bring their friends and family to celebrate good times and enjoy great food.” With its signature blend of customer service, wood-fired food, craft cocktails and intimate atmosphere, Firebirds is making its own distinct mark on the Brentwood dining scene.

Customer service is always front and center, but Willie Bryan and the Firebirds staff are also passionate about their commitment to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a pediatric cancer charity. For every fresh-squeezed lemonade sold at Firebirds, the restaurant donates $1.25 to the charity. This June, Firebirds will set up their own lemonade stand in front of the restaurant and collect donations for the charity. It’s their way of giving back to the Brentwood community that has so warmly welcomed them. “We’re all about that lemonade,” says Bryan. “We want to be an important part of this community in the years to come.”

Parting Thoughts

Don’t Be A CRASH COURSE FROM A FELLOW BRIDE WORDS ALLIE WINDOM

A

hh, engagement. I'm walking around with a shiny rock on my finger that I can’t stop looking at, and every two minutes someone asks if I've set a date. It’s a whirlwind experience, but once the excitement died down, reality hit me-- and it will hit you, too. Now, you have the not-so-tiny task of planning a giant event where people expect you to look like a princess, feed them, entertain them, and give them a happy celebration. If we’re not careful, this perfect storm can lead you to becoming a raging, impossibly panicked, um, witch. On my own wedding-planning journey, I’m learning some ways to stay out of the “bridezilla zone.” Read on, my fellow brides, for a few of my recommendations. 1. DELEGATE.

Just because this is a day all about you and your fiancé, that doesn’t mean your loving friends and family can’t help you make it happen. Don’t let control-freak tendencies send your stress levels skyrocketing. 2. STAY CALM IN CONFLICT.

Your wedding day is a significant day, but the event itself is not worth ruining lifelong relationships over. Whatever disagreements may arise (and trust me, they will come), keep your head on straight and don’t let emotions get the best of you. Use the planning process as a time to learn how to temper your words—a skill we’ll all need for the rest of our marriages. 3. STRETCH THE BUDGET WHERE YOU CAN.

When in doubt, lean toward being thrifty. Decide in advance the most important things that your money needs to cover, and 42

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2016

then use the rest to fill in the gaps. Build-in some financial margin in to prevent panicked moments when a last-minute expense sneaks up on you. 4. BE INTENTIONAL ABOUT MANAGING YOUR STRESS LEVELS.

For heavens’ sake, take care of yourself. We’ve all seen a bride who’s so exasperated from planning that she doesn’t even seem to enjoy her wedding day. Be aware of your stress levels, and schedule deliberate breaks to keep it at bay. Heck, go see a therapist or schedule a weekly massage. Your dashing groom (and your wedding-day self) will thank you for it. 5. REMEMBER WHAT’S IMPORTANT.

Your wedding day IS important, yes, but don’t forget about the rest of your life after the wedding. Do your best to love your family, friends, and most importantly your fiancé, even in the most tense and difficult of situations. Remember that people are the most important part of life, and they will be around for the rest of your days. Don’t alienate those close to you, and build a solid foundation for loving your husband well. No matter what, you will be a beautiful bride, and your wedding day will be wonderful. Remember that the day is so much more than just an epic and perfect party—it’s a celebration that you’ve found the love of a lifetime. Have fun with wedding planning. Don’t let it beat you up. And if all else fails, my friends, a glass of wine never hurts.
