Brentwood residents and neighbors. Gracious Home was born in 1963 when Natan and David Wekselbaum opened the doors of a 2,000-square-foot hardware store on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The two brothers were the only employees, and every time a customer would visit the store and ask for an item he or she didn’t have, the Wekselbaums wrote down the request and placed an order. The shop eventually grew to more than 40,000 square feet, selling everything from lightbulbs to luxury bedding. JAIME VERNON KNEW EARLY ON SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT WITH HER DAUGHTER LEXI’S HEARING, EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS TOLD TIME AND AGAIN NOTHING WAS WRONG. But she didn’t give up, and at the age of 13 months, Lexi was diagnosed as being deaf. A few months later, Lexi received cochlear implants and at 19 months, was able to hear sounds for the first time. “After experiencing the heartache of Lexi never

Email me. Whatever you need, I’ll help walk you through it. It’s my favorite part of this job. We want this experience to change the way they THINK about their hearing.” Lexi agrees: “Being hearing impaired is a gift. God has put you in this position to go tell others about your story. Damon is absolutely amazing. When we listed our home, he made three predictions: one about how quickly would sell, one about how many offers we will get and one about the final amount. They all seemed ambitious, and maybe a bit too optimistic. But he was dead on! That is how well he knows the market. That alone would be impressive already, but the whole experience of selling a house with him was simply perfect. At every step along the way, he helped us, coached us, made the correct recommendations and calmed our nerves. The closing process was quick and easy, too. He then even helped us deal with minor hiccups post sales. Everything he did with great ease and patience. If we ever sell again, we will do so with him! - Alex and Shannon Maier - Bought and sold in 2021

NEW LEGENDS BANK INITIATIVE HIGHLIGHTS CONNECTIONS AND COLLABORATION WITH FEMALES

20

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2021

A NEW LEGENDS BANK INITIATIVE AIMS TO ASSIST FEMALES WITH PERSONAL, TRUSTWORTHY AND CUSTOMIZED APPROACHES TO FINANCIAL INFORMATION, ADVICE AND RESOURCES. “Banking is very much a relationship business. We’re empathetic to situations and questions many women have, and are striving to be more accessible so we can brainstorm options with our female customers. It’s about customers trusting us with their money, and we’re flexible so they can lean on us when decisions matter most,” assures Britney Campbell, Legends Bank senior vice president of marketing and public relations. Britney, a middle Tennessee native, says Legends Bank professionals focus on being approachable rather than simply transactional. “Beneficial banking experiences are much more than just having convenient technology. The relationship aspect of the banking experience is where local banks, like Legends, are most valuable as confidantes. As a fellow small business and community partner, we understand the true value of customers having a team they can rely on for different life milestones that are beyond financials but still impact a woman’s financial wellbeing,” she adds. FINANCIAL BUZZ (CONTINUED)

Britney says she got creative ideas about how to enhance banking relationships for women while connecting with other female business coaches, attorneys, wealth advisors and professionals at Collective615, Nashville’s first co-working space designed for women. “This location is filled with incredibly talented and intelligent women who’ve poured themselves into their business, yet conversations around money and finances were still uncomfortable. I wanted to find a way the bank could be a resource to improve women’s confidence around these topics,” she explains. So, Britney and other Co615 members launched a “Women And Wealth” series of helpful topics, with the goal of making conversations about finances more supportive. Britney also was one of five inspirational women who recently championed females in business through the “Women Empowering Women” campaign on The Nashville Sign for networking group Heels and Handshakes. The Legends Bank team now passionately emphasizes an ‘available-comfortable-customized business approach’ as a standard way of assisting women. “It’s a progressive concept for the banking industry, and we’re extremely enthused to demonstrate how it works. Just think of the new possibilities,” quips Britney. 2 Maryland Farms, Suite 110, Brentwood 615.372.1750 LegendsBank.com/locations/ Brentwood-Tennessee

BOHO COLLECTION NOW AVAILABLE AT THE SHOWROOM HUNTER PREMO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN NASHVILLE, AND IS A FASHION, LIFESTYLE AND TRAVEL BLOGGER. Hunter has a love for vintage style and all things BoHo. Hunter also adds a little edge to her wardrobe. Hunter and The Showroom are collaborating to bring some of Hunter’s incredible pieces accessible to you. Brentwood Lifestyle asked Hunter some questions about the collaboration with The Showroom in Nashville. TELL OUR READERS ABOUT YOUR STYLE. I’ve always been drawn to the more eclectic, collected pieces that you can’t find just anywhere. I draw a lot of influence from vintage styles while always mixing in a bit of a Nashville flair. 26

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2021

WHAT MADE YOU COLLABORATE WITH THE SHOWROOM? I would receive messages from my local Nashville girls asking to rent dresses for their baby showers, maternity/bridal shoots, and other events. It can be tough to find those stand-out pieces last minute, and I know the feeling of scrambling around trying to find a dress when you have your mind set on a certain piece you’ve seen online. I wanted to offer an opportunity for these women to wear pieces I’ve curated over the years and feel confident on their special days. I’ve personally been a Showroom customer for years and knew Kristin [Geyser] would help me execute my vision perfectly. ARE YOUR PICKS AVAILABLE FOR RENTAL OR PURCHASE? They are available for rental. HOW OFTEN WILL YOU BE ADDING STYLES AT THE SHOWROOM? I plan to bring in new pieces seasonally with a few poplar staples that will remain year-round.

GONE ARE THE DAYS OF QUICK AND EASY BACKYARD POOL CONSTRUCTION. Today’s pools are only part of elegant and well-designed outdoor living spaces. Many outdoor pool projects today rival even the best indoor family living areas. Watermark Pools’ Chad Christenson, grew up in and around the construction industry. He worked for his uncle before starting his own company in Florida in 2006. Eight years later, in 2014, Chad relocated to Middle Tennessee to continue building innovative outdoor spaces. The market for quality swimming pools is unusually high. Practically every new home today in and around Williamson County includes some type of pool with one or more outdoor

with additional acreage might include a custom-designed pool. Land setbacks, soil conditions, and building codes can impact the type and length of pool construction. Potential pool owners could also consult their Home Owner Association (HOA) bylaws for any stipulations on outdoor construction requirements. “Because there is more demand for pools, people want an outdoor living space as opposed to just a pool,” says Chad. “After we meet with the homeowner and understand their budget and design requirements, we survey the lot to make sure the available space can accommodate the pool and any amenities. A lot has to happen before we begin to dig.”

CUPCAKE SUPERSTAR (CONTINUED)

As cupcake sales continued to tumble, Butler closed her original store in February 2020, exactly 12 years after having turned on the lights. “Selling my last store felt like a loss of identity. And, while I was trying to find my way through it, Covid hit,” says Butler. While people all over the world were being shoved into isolation, and long-successful businesses were barring their doors and windows, a disoriented Butler decided to pivot in the most thoughtful of ways. “I was watching television when I heard a reporter say, ‘If you’re a designer, stop making clothes. We need masks!’ I thought, ‘Well, I can’t sew, but I can cook.” Within days of creating a menu and announcing on Instagram and her website that she’d be offering both home deliveries and scheduled pickups at a Whole Foods location, orders were spilling into her inbox. 42

ambled about her kitchen, measuring and mixing, doling out pans of delectable lemon bars and savory chicken pot pies that would not only satisfy taste buds, but feed hungry souls. Perhaps providing the spirit of home for those who needed home more than ever, but weren’t able to be there. Having long fantasized about opening a pie shop, months later, when a realtor friend informed her of an available space, she leapt at the opportunity. “I said, ‘Yes, I’m ready!’ I knew it was a risky thing to do during a pandemic, but I also knew that love and comfort were what the world was starving for most. And those are key ingredients that get tossed into all of my recipes,” says Butler. Less than a year later, Gigi’s Kitchen is attracting comfort food aficionados like bees to honey. Some come for the biscuits, freshly-brewed coffee and hearty quiches, and others wander in for her amazing pies–from whipped peanut butter to boston cream. There’s also the take-and-bake casseroles that make it easy for busy families to enjoy home-cooked dinners. And the shop boasts complimentary WiFi, which Butler hopes will support aspiring entrepreneurs on their quests. But, despite being a household name, Butler swears her tenacious work ethic isn’t for glory. Rather, she’s driven by an insatiable desire to give birth to new and delicious things that might enhance the world–not despite the trials of life, but because of them. “I don’t want to be on a porch when I’m 80 years old, thinking, ‘Why didn’t I just go for that?’ No matter what happens to me, I’ll never stop dreaming up ways to share my purpose,” she says. “I want to be a forerunner for comfort food, offering love to hearts and feeding bellies, because I can’t imagine a better use of my earthly time.”

maggie sangler's art takes shape in nashville MODFELLOWS ART GALLERY IN NASHVILLE WILL BE EXHIBITING A NEW SOLO SHOW CALLED SHAPES, WITH ARTWORK FROM NASHVILLE NATIVE MAGGIE SANGER. The opening reception will be on Saturday, May 1, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the show will run through May 29. “When we opened the gallery in Nashville, our plan was to feature art we weren’t seeing around town,” says Richard Modica, who owns Modfellows Art Gallery along with wife, Julie. “Upon visiting Maggie’s studio, we were immediately impressed by her execution, scale and style.”

52

Brentwood Lifestyle | May 2021

“Rich was kind of the first person to encourage me to take my canvas work seriously,” says Maggie. “He is super supportive and really encouraging.” Shapes features large flat-shaped fiberboard cutouts. “I’m exploring a lot of things in this series, such as how we perceive the space around us and how we interact with the space around us while dealing with perception, truth and reality. These are op art pieces, so it’s in a really playful way. “I think we create our own reality as we move through space and experience it with our own unique lenses, so the cool part is what you perceive is up to you and it can be totally different than how someone else is experiencing the same piece, at the same exact time, in the same exact space.” “Everyone has a different reaction to art,” says Rich. “I feel that the unique factor in Maggie’s work is scale, shape, color, and of course, her execution. Hard-edge paintings must be executed flawlessly to work; then the viewer can find refuge in a meditative space of form, color and line.”

TWO FRIENDS OPEN DENTAL PRACTICES SIDE BY SIDE IN BRENTWOOD

DR. TIFFANY RANGEL, OF TWICE PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY, AND DR. LAUREN POOLE, OF SWEET TRUTH DENTAL, ARE MAKING DENTAL CARE EASIER FOR FAMILIES IN BRENTWOOD. With two offices located side by side in the old Brentwood library in Maryland Farms, parents can drop off their children for dental appointments and step right next door to take care of their own pearly whites. Dr. Rangel is a Florida native who decided with her husband that Brentwood was where they wanted to be. “I really enjoy getting to be a part of the community that I’m also servicing,” she says. She adds she always enjoyed working with children and decided to become certified to open Twice Pediatric Dentistry. “I love the challenge of kids, the innocence, and the ability to win them over.” As a parent herself, she’s able to relate to mothers in providing children treatment in her own dental chair. Dr. Poole, whose husband is a native of Brentwood, was visiting his family here for the first time when she recalls knowing that this is where she wanted to live. “The community here – you just can’t beat it. Everything family-oriented here is so important to us.”

Smiles, Big and Small

Her office, Sweet Truth Dental, is founded on the practice of holistic dentistry. After diving into a holistic lifestyle herself, she decided she wanted to open a holistic practice of her own. Holistic dentistry is standard dentistry using a more preventative approach to ensure no toxic chemicals are used. “We just want to do things more safely for my patients. I have more options, I do more explaining, and I offer patients a toxic-free approach,” says Dr. Poole. Dr. Rangel and Dr. Poole’s friendship bloomed out of their work at previous practices. When Dr. Poole found a large space in Maryland Farms for her own practice, she called up her friend and asked if she would like to join her next door and divide the space into two separate offices. Dr. Rangel was ready. “It’s nice to have a colleague next door to bounce ideas off of as far as running businesses or just as a mom,” says Dr. Rangel. They cherish their relationship both personally and professionally. They support one another whether it’s in their work or in their roles as mothers and wives. “As a woman and a mom and opening a business, I wouldn’t have survived this without doing it with her,” says Dr. Poole. Annabelle admits the mother in her was distraught for her son’s life and emotionally numb for a while until the scientific side of her took over and decided to look deeper into options. “I’d read about cannabis for epilepsy, and I was desperate to find something to help him. But when I found too much variability in the cannabis oils I could gather, I decided I needed to create a solution myself, something pure that his brain could absorb,” she says. By merging the medical and natural plant worlds, Annabelle created a unique CBD product about which she was confident. Macario’s positive outcome was amazing and remains a medical mystery. “We saw results within two days of him receiving the CBD formulation. He began tracking movements, started crawling and could walk by 14 months old. Now, he has no noticeable deficits,” she says. At that point, she knew she was going to take a disputable stand in medicine, although she’s still not “anti-pharmaca.” “Many neuro medications are Band-Aid-like in that they inhibit processes from happening. In essence, they freeze the body’s functions when health issues occur, but the original conditions still exist. The underlying problems are still there,” Annabelle asserts. “For the brain to heal, it needs to be able to activate correct actions and make necessary connections.” FORWARD PATH Annabelle’s diligence and research results changed many minds regarding components of molecular science. It’s been a challenging journey, but she now has initiated 10 CBD-related clinical studies in 11 countries. She served as scientific director at Tikun Olam, a mission-driven organization at the forefront of global cannabis research. She’s also on the advisory board of Quanta, a polarization-based technology group. “I’m a positive voice on the fence between traditional and new medical approaches. Science is science. Data are data,” says the neuroscientist who seeks to understand root causes of illnesses and who now actively consults with academics and companies around the world. She says she’s hopeful her CBD-related work will lead to treatments for autism spectrum disorder, cancer, Parkinson disease, stem cell advancements and COVID therapeutics.
