Organic Abstract (#662) by Harry Moody,

The Art of Living

It has been nearly three months since the Los Angeles fires devastated our community, and although things will never be the same, it feels like there is finally a sense of forward movement and a desire to find a new normal, whatever that may be. For some, this means living in a new house in a new neighborhood, or perhaps sending your children to a different school. For many of our friends and loved ones, it’s dealing with the arduous responsibility of working through insurance policies and inventory lists and learning how to rebuild an entire home (if this is you, please be sure to check out the advice from Kelly Konzelman of Reconstruction Recovery Advisors on page 11). For others, it may simply be finding new routines for everyday tasks once taken for granted—the Palisades businesses that were part of the fabric of our lives but are now, at least for a time, gone. No matter how the fires have affected us personally, we are all feeling the weight of this moment, and the uncertainty of all that is to come.

It has also been a painful reminder of just how precious life truly is, and how everything can change in an instant. As they say, tomorrow is a gift, not a promise. More than ever, it’s important to focus on the present, and to surround yourself with people and things that spark joy. This is why for our annual Investment issue, we chose to focus on art: living with art, the art of living and even, in some cases, the art that we lost. We check in with jetsetting photographer Gray Malin, visit painter Connie Engel’s new gallery and explore the world of Saatchi Art, the Santa Monica-based online marketplace that gives clients unparalleled access to the best and brightest talents around the globe. We also learn about shipping, storing and installing priceless pieces from the experts at AirSea Packing, an international luxury logistics firm that operates like characters from a James Bond film.

Lastly, we highlight Flour Pizzeria & Café, a Palisades pizza shop that was about to open its second location in Brentwood when the fires hit. Now, after losing the original restaurant as well as his home, owner Robert Flutie has found a new sense of community—and purpose—right here on San Vicente.

After all, investing can be much more than material—we also spend a considerable amount of time and effort investing in our community. And I think we all can appreciate this now more than ever before.

Enjoy the issue.

STRUGGLING WITH WILDFIRE RECOVERY?

Adjuster Won’t Properly Value Your Home?

Need a Contractor’s Estimate to Rebuild?

Can’t Collect Building Code Upgrades?

Need Assistance Vetting a Builder?

Tired of Doing it All Yourself?

We are here to help! Reconstruction Recovery Advisors has over 40 years experience in large-loss reconstruction and insurance claims. We are licensed consulting contractors. We can assist you with your claim, provide a replacement cost valuation and hold your hand through the settlement and rebuilding process. Don’t get screwed. Call us today for a free consultation and claim review.

STARTING THE PROCESS OF RECOVERY

For the past 43 years, I have been assisting homeowners with their insurance claims as a licensed builder and recovery specialist. Having worked as a preferred contractor for many of the largest insurance companies in the state and having rebuilt or restored hundreds of damaged homes, I have learned much about how the insurance claim and recovery process works. Since 2018, we have worked with over 200 homeowners who have lost their homes in the Tubbs, Thompson, Camp, Woolsey, Dixie and Park wildfires. Over the next six issues of Brentwood City Lifestyle, I hope to provide some helpful guidance and advice that may aid families struggling with recovery to fully understand the valuation and settlement process, how to interact with your adjuster, how to properly value the replacement cost of the home you lost and what documents you need to produce in order to maximize your payout and collect your policy limits.

TIP #1: The Key to Success— Properly Valuing the Home You Lost

Before you can hire a builder, before you can design a new home, before you can commit to rebuilding, you must have an accurate idea of your construction budget. You won’t know that until you settle your claim with your carrier. Unfortunately, your adjuster is not qualified to estimate the real-world cost of replacing the home you lost. A real reconstruction estimate includes the cost of preparing your building site, re-grading your lot, replacing damaged utilities, producing plans and engineering, identifying required building code upgrades

and understanding how your home was constructed and built, including the quality, workmanship and materials used to build and finish your home. Your adjuster is not going to know that. As a result, the estimate provided by your adjuster may undervalue your replacement cost by 50% or more.

You are entitled to receive the fair market value to rebuild the home you lost, as it was constructed and finished on the day of the loss, up to your policy limits. Your carrier is not interested in the house you intend to build. They only care about the value of the house you lost, because that is what they are obligated to pay for. The estimate you provide to your adjuster should include all costs for plans, permits, sitework, rough and finish construction, landscaping, walls, walks, fences and debris removal. It should be written in line-item format. If you are having trouble finding a builder qualified to value the home you lost, call us, we are happy to help.

TIP #2: Don’t Hire a Public Adjuster

Don’t make the mistake of hiring a public adjuster. They will take 10%-15% of your entire claim, even from your personal property proceeds. That could easily exceed $100,000. Public Adjusters cannot recover any more than your policy limits. An educated consumer with a well-crafted estimate should have no problem obtaining policy limits with a little help and professional advice. Hiring a public adjuster only guarantees you will not have enough money to rebuild your home. Questions? Call me for a no-cost consolation. We are here to help!

Piece of the Pie

After losing its original location in the Palisades Fire, Flour Pizzeria brings a sense of comfort and community to Brentwood, one slice at a time

When Robert Flutie opened Flour Pizzeria & Café in Pacific Palisades in November 2023, the idea was simple: “I wanted to bring authentic New York-style pizza to LA,” says the Queens, New York native. “Growing up, I loved the sense of community that we had and how connected we were to our neighbors. My fondest memory was getting $5 on Fridays from my parents and going to the local pizzeria—I would get two slices and a Pepsi and hang with my friends.”

Flutie—who moved to Pacific Palisades in 2003, where he raised his own three children, now grown—wanted to create the same experience for his beloved adopted hometown. Working with his son, Alexander, who serves as the company’s CMO, he began researching recipes and pizza-making techniques, and eventually found a prime location on Via de la Paz, across from Pali Elementary and around the corner from Village School, Seven Arrows and Pali High. Upon opening, the spot quickly gained popularity for its delicious artisanal pizzas— available as full pies or by-the-slice and made with Italian grain flour and hand-stretched dough—as well as coffee, freshly-baked pastries, sandwiches, salads and more.

“It had the same sense of community that I had growing up,” says Flutie. “Friends and families coming together to support and cheer each other on in sports, theater, dance and life. We loved that patio and the proximity to the schools, but most of all we loved the old school Palisades vibe on Via de la Paz that had gone untouched. It felt like what the Palisades was like when we first moved there.”

The pizzeria was such a success that Flutie quickly began planning its expansion, choosing Brentwood as the spot for its second satellite location. Unfortunately, plans changed during the Palisades Fire, when both the original Flour Pizzeria and Flutie’s own home burned to the ground.

“Surreal would be an understatement,” recalls Flutie, who was in India on a meditation retreat at the time and witnessed the destruction via FaceTime with his kids. Remarkably, he’s no stranger to this type

Robert Flutie with his children, Ava, Alexander and Catherine

of catastrophe, having served as a first responder at New York City's Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. “I have witnessed first-hand mass destruction and loss on an epic level, and this really took me back to how surreal it is to see something go from one form into another in a matter of hours.”

With the Brentwood location—situated on a busy block on San Vicente in the center of town—only a month away from completion, Flutie realized that he had a unique opportunity to create a sense of comfort and community for displaced Palisadians, many who were now living in the area. “As I got ready to open, not a day would go by where someone from the Palisades didn’t come by and share

their stories with us, or expressed the joy that they felt being able to connect with a piece of their home,” recalls Flutie, who plans to rebuild the original spot. He opened the Brentwood eatery on Valentine’s Day, offering complimentary pies to Palisades residents, first responders and law enforcement, and the following day he served free slices for all. Not surprisingly, the line wrapped around the block. “I like to say that ‘Pizza is love,’” says Flutie. “It transcends being just food. I am touched and grateful to have such love surrounding us, and to be able to share that love and care with one another.”

GLOBAL ONLINE MARKETPLACE SAATCHI ART HELPS CLIENTS DISCOVER AND BUY FROM THE BEST EMERGING TALENTS AROUND THE WORLD

As a tangible asset, fine art isn’t as vulnerable to the whims of the market, and getting to enjoy the pieces daily adds another layer of value. But it can be difficult to know where to start, let alone how to grow and protect your investment. If you’re interested in beginning

Perhaps unsurprisingly, LA collectors have wide-ranging stylistic tastes, but Remington sees growth in several genres. “Collectors are questioning identity and form through figurative work, and I see a keen interest in photography, too,” she says. “And they

the journey of collecting—or building on a pre-existing passion—professional advice, as with any financial decision, is an invaluable tool. “At the core of all art investments is buying what you love,” says Erin Remington, Director of Sales and Curation for Saatchi Art. As an advisor with the company for nearly eight years, she has powerful insight to share.

“Saatchi Art is an industry trailblazer, known as the best place to buy art online,” says Remington. And with an inventory of more than 1.2 million vetted artworks by more than 100,000 artists, there is undoubtedly something for everyone. “We have artworks for all budgets, from $500 to $100,000, so we can work with collectors at every stage of their art-buying journey,” she adds. Having the company based in Santa Monica (it was launched in 2010 as a digital initiative of London’s venerated Saatchi Gallery, but they separated in 2014) makes it especially attuned to Southern California. “Our roots are here, and we really feel the energy and creativity of Los Angeles—it’s one of the most exciting markets in the country.”

aren’t shying away from challenging artwork,” she adds, noting her eagerness for them to consider artwork not only as investments, but as conversation starters. Some of the local artists she sees gaining traction include Minas Halaj, who works with recycled materials; fifth-generation weaver Renata Daina; Jin-Woo Prensena, who specializes in aerial photography; and Kory Alexander, whose paintings explore dream-like worlds. Mixed-media artist and Brentwood resident Karen Clark is another artist high on Remington’s ones-to-watch list. Clark, who was evacuated during the Palisades Fire, is now painting haunting scenes of fiery palms and shadowy figures fleeing. These pieces also serve as an important reminder to protect your investment. “Keep a running list of your artwork,” Remington advises. “A good habit is to keep a digital record of all certificates of authenticity and the amount paid for each piece of art. Take photos or videos of your collection—phone-quality images are sufficient—and seek guidance from your insurance company

about your policy and to ensure your art is covered.” As many fire victims learned in the aftermath, a separate policy is often required for fine art and collectibles.

“The core of our mission is really to make living with art easier and more enjoyable,” Remington continues, “so we offer complimentary advisors who provide guidance and reassurance.” Clients are matched one-on-one with staff who can help focus their vision and set smart goals. They can also offer access to items perhaps not online or help orchestrate commissions.

And while Saatchi Art doesn’t have a brick-andmortar to visit, they aren’t solely online. In 2016, they acquired The Other Art Fair, an international art fair held in Los Angeles twice a year (and in Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, London, Melbourne and Sydney, as well), where collectors and artists can meet in-person. “It’s an inspiring environment,” says Remington. “We have boundary-pushing programming, including live performances and interactive installations, that foster long-lasting connections. It's generated more than $50 million in sales and transformed the careers of so many artists.” This February, the LA fair featured 140 exhibiting artists, a special presentation of Judy Baca’s iconic 1968 East L.A. Student Walkouts mural, a pop-up portrait studio by Anna Marie Tendler and new works by actor Charles Michael Davis. donated 100-percent of its proceeds from a charitable art sale and its Friday Late tickets to the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund. (If you missed the fair, the next one will be held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica this September 25-28.)

Whatever you fancy, “just invest in art that resonates with you,” says Remington. “And that alone will ensure it’s a worthwhile investment.”

REMINGTON’S TIPS FOR BUILDING AN ART COLLECTION

1. Buy what you love and trust your gut! Enjoy the process of discovering new artists and building a collection that reflects your taste.

2. Set a budget. Art is a long-term commitment and an investment that will grow with you over the years.

3. Diversify your collection. Learn about different mediums, styles and market trends, and acquire works that reflect your taste in unique ways.

4. Display pieces seasonally. Build a collection that makes your space inspired and dynamic when you rotate artworks. Art can and should reflect your mood at any given time!

5. Set up a consultation with a Saatchi Art advisor for personalized recommendations.

For more information, visit saatchiart.com or email curator@saatchiart.com to set up a oneon-one consultation with a Saatchi Art advisor.

PAINTED VISION

ARTIST CONNIE ENGEL’S EPONYMOUS GALLERY IS A PERFECT BACKDROP FOR HER IMPRESSIVE ORIGINAL WORKS

Connie Engel has been creating art for as long as she can remember. “I started to draw with pencil on paper as a young child,” says the Claremont, CA native, recalling how she would sit in front of the television drawing cartoons. “Sketches and drawings with pencils became my favorite medium, until my interest grew to expressing my art on canvas with oils.”

Docked 60 x 48

As a young adult, Engel moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a commercial actress, a vocation that she enjoyed for many years. She married television executive producer Peter Engel—who found great success with Saved by the Bell and its various spin-offs—and the couple settled down with their two boys in Westwood Hills (although she and Peter are no longer married, they remain good friends).

Yet, Engel’s desire for art remained—fueled by her frequent international travels, where she would visit galleries and museums and continue to hone her craft. In 1995, Engel rented a small studio space above Maria’s Italian Kitchen in Brentwood Village, close to where the boys attended Brentwood School. “I would do commissioned work and have small gatherings,” she says. “My boys would walk over and hang once they were out of school. They’d get a slice of pizza and then we’d go home together.” By 2003, Engel’s career had taken off, and her work was displayed in national galleries such as Galerie Gabrie in Pasadena, Joseph Gierek Fine Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Twinhouse Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.

Now, after more than 20 years as a prolific painter, Engel has opened her first-ever dedicated gallery, Connie Engel Art, on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, where she now lives. “I knew it was perfect the moment I saw it,” Engel says of the chic warehouse-like space. “Two long walls hold my art with great lighting. It is simple, with no distractions so that the work has the center stage.”

The gallery is an ideal place to display Engel’s stunning original works, which are all created on quality canvas with acrylic paints and range from still life to realism to representationalism to abstract. “I love to paint anything from a tennis ball to the ocean,” says Engel, who is known for her masterful use of shadowing and often incorporates dark backgrounds and metallics so that the object itself pops. “I use anything I can to get the effect I desire. For instance, in my painting Docked , I used foam brushes to get the palette look. I like to build up paints to develop texture.” Engel—who is usually onsite at the

gallery and has a painting studio in back—will also take commissions. “Recently, a lovely couple commissioned me to do a buck deer from a photo they took in Washington. Later, they asked me to paint their boat.”

Nearly a year after opening the gallery, Engel is loving this new chapter in her life.  “It’s very fulfilling,” Engel says. “I am so grateful!”

Installing furniture for an interior design

When it comes to shipping, storing and installing high-end furnishings and priceless art, there can be no room for error. Perhaps no company takes this responsibility more seriously than AirSea Packing—a white-glove logistics firm with offices in 16 cities across the US and Europe, including Los Angeles, New York, London, Dallas, Miami and Paris. “What sets us apart is the people who work for us, as well as our global reach,” says LA General Manager Ben Flashman. “It’s our combination of experience, expertise, innovation, personal touch and collaborative approach that has made us a staple among discerning clients around the world.” And with weekly air-ride shuttles between major cities and expert handling from pickup to delivery, AirSea Packing ensures that every detail is managed with the ultimate precision and care. Here, we checked in with Flashman to learn more. airseapacking.com

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AIRSEA PACKING?

We’re a one-stop shop for high-end logistics. We specialize in the transportation, installation and storage of high-value items—from fine art to antiques to designer furniture. Here in LA, we serve a diverse group of clients: private collectors, auction houses, homeowners, interior designers and global luxury brands. Whether it’s installing a new window display on Rodeo Drive, warehousing for a gallery exhibition or coordinating a complete installation for a new home, we can do it all.

HOW DO YOU SPECIFICALLY SERVICE PRIVATE RESIDENCES?

We recognize that households these days are run like businesses. Working with house managers, financial advisors and personal assistants, we can help to organize complicated logistics into a clear and concise plan. For example, a client might be planning a renovation project at their LA residence. We work with contractors’ schedules, coordinate onsite visits to assess the scope, document and catalog furnishings, pack onsite and collect and store at our facility. Our online inventory access allows clients total visibility. When the jobsite is ready, we jump back into action, returning everything to its place. Ultimately, it’s about delivering a seamless, stressfree experience, with the utmost regard for privacy and a concierge-level approach to every single move.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LOS ANGELES HEADQUARTERS?

Our Los Angeles hub is the bustling operational center of the West Coast. It forms a strategic link that connects our broader network to San Francisco, Hawaii, Las Vegas and beyond. Each of our three LA warehouses are climate-controlled and feature high-level monitoring and security systems.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXCLUSIVE SERVICES THAT YOU OFFER?

We cater to some of the world’s most discerning clients— these are individuals whose lives are built around travel. They maintain multiple properties around the globe. For example, a movie executive in Brentwood might need an important work of art sent out to their yacht for a meeting while at the Cannes Film Festival. That almost sounds like a scene from a movie itself! But this is where we shine. We can handle every detail—collection, custom packing and crating, export documentation, airfreight, delivery from Nice to Cannes, all while coordinating with the client’s team both in the US and on the boat. Our VIP services are all about delivering results with absolute peace of mind.

HOW DO YOU COORDINATE WITH A CLIENT BETWEEN MULTIPLE PROPERTIES?

When a client splits time between, say, Los Angeles, New York and Europe, we become their single point of contact for everything—from inventory cataloging and custom crating to international shipping and installation. The goal is to handle all of these moving parts behind the scenes, so our clients can focus on their important work rather than worrying about the logistics. By centralizing everything through AirSea Packing, they know that each piece—whether it’s a priceless painting or a custom credenza, arrives exactly where it needs to be, on time and without issue.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF WORKING WITH INTERIOR DESIGNERS TO DO A FULL INSTALL?

Working with interior designers is one of the most rewarding parts of our job. Many of these designers have gained incredible notoriety and acclaim for their vision and detailed execution—think AD100 and Elle Décor A-list. When we are brought into a project, we like to think of

“We cater to some of the world’s most discerning clients— these are individuals whose lives are built around travel. Our VIP services are all about delivering results with absolute peace of mind.”

“Those are the moments where our team really shines, tackling intricate, high-stakes challenges with a calm and methodical approach. We feel privileged to play a role in such great feats of architecture and artistic endeavors.”

ourselves as an extension to their firm. We discuss the budget, floorplans, timelines, costs and ultimately client expectations. During the project, we receive and inspect all furniture, art and accessories as they arrive from various locations. We consolidate these fixtures in our climate-controlled facilities until the project is ready for installation. Once the designer gives us the go-ahead, we schedule a dedicated install day (or days) to unpack, assemble and place every piece according to their detailed plans.  Working with designers at this level is truly a collaborative dance. It’s a partnership built on precision, professionalism and a shared commitment to excellence.

WHAT IS YOUR ART SERVICE LIKE?

Our Fine Art Services division is a dedicated team of specialists who handle every aspect of art logistics— from designing custom crates to orchestrating complex installations. Whether we’re dealing with a single masterpiece or an entire collection, we recognize that each piece has unique qualities and is treated with the highest degree of care and precision.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE STEPS THAT YOU TAKE TO PROTECT AN ARTWORK?

We take a holistic approach to protecting artwork, starting with a thorough assessment of each piece. We make packing, transport and storage considerations based on size, weight, fragility, medium and provenance. Often custom crates are made to protect works through the process.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS CLIENTS CAN DO TO PROTECT THEIR ART OR VALUABLE FURNISHINGS DURING SHIPPING AND INSTALLATION?

Communication with your logistics partner is absolutely essential. Share every relevant detail about the piece—its value, fragility, etc.—so that the proper packing and transport measures can be put in place. Next, consider climate conditions: if your piece is sensitive to temperature or humidity swings, make sure you’re using climate-controlled transport and that the receiving location has stable environmental controls. Insurance coverage is another must-have—verify that you have the right policy in place and confirm that it covers your pieces in transit as well as a storage location. Finally, take the time to document your artwork’s condition before it leaves your hands, and again once it arrives. This adds an extra layer of protection and peace of mind throughout the entire process.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FIRE-SAFE MEASURES WITH YOUR WORK, AND IS THERE ANYTHING THAT HOMEOWNERS CAN DO TO PROTECT IN CASE OF A FIRE?

We take fire safety very seriously, starting with our warehouses, which are outfitted with advanced fire suppression systems, temperature controls and 24/7 monitoring to reduce risk. When it comes to in-home

installations, we generally defer to the homeowner’s or estate manager’s existing fire protection strategies— for instance, sprinkler systems, fire-retardant panels or specialized alarm setups. Ultimately, it’s about combining professional safeguards with the homeowner’s comprehensive plan to ensure complete peace of mind.

WHAT

WAS YOUR

EXPERIENCE

DURING THE LA FIRES? DID YOU DO ANY EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS OR GO TO ANY LENGTHS TO HELP PROTECT ANY ART OR FURNISHINGS?

The LA Fires were definitely a tense and tragic time. We had some longstanding clients reach out for immediate assistance in various capacities. In a few cases, we were able to mobilize a crew to safely pack and transport items out of high-risk areas.

HOW DOES INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING OR TRANSIT WORK?

We handle international shipping from start to finish, so our clients never have to stress about the details. Thanks to our global network of partners and own facilities abroad, we’re able to coordinate everything from customs clearance to the specialized crating of artworks and designer furnishings. We tailor the process to each shipment, whether it’s sea freight in temperature-controlled containers or an airfreight for time-sensitive or high-value pieces. For imports, our in-house customs brokers streamline the paperwork, ensuring every form is filled out correctly and complies with local regulations. Essentially, we provide a door-to-door service—so if a piece needs to travel from a gallery in Paris to a home in Brentwood, we arrange everything, soup to nuts.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST NOTABLE PIECES YOU HAVE WORKED WITH?

We once coordinated a complex multi-floor installation at a brand-new flagship boutique on Rodeo Drive—without naming names, let’s just say it was a global luxury label. The entire process involved custom crates, specialized rigging and precise scheduling to fit the boutique’s build-out timeline of just 48 hours. Seeing everything come together in such a landmark location was pretty thrilling. One piece in particular on that job was a 30-foot-tall ceiling element that drops down in the foyer two stories. We sent it to site on a flatbed semi-truck at 3AM, uncrated it and walked the frame down the middle of Rodeo Drive. To get it inside the store, we literally corkscrewed it through the front door.  It was a site to see!

On another occasion, we shipped John Lennon’s piano in the UK—a piece of pop culture history that required meticulous care and special permission just to handle. Those are the moments where our team really shines, tackling intricate, high-stakes challenges with a calm and methodical approach. We feel privileged to play a role in such great feats of architecture and artistic endeavors. And we love it.
