The Love Local Issue

Hearing With Your Heart

You deserve to hear better. Hearing connects us to the world and to one another. Not hearing well triggers a feeling of disconnect and isolation, making social situations that once were fun bring dread. In addition to improving your hearing, we empower you to restore your sense of wholeness and youthfulness. The majority of people with changes in their hearing are under the age of 65 - years of listening to loud music or operating noisy equipment without protection, common health conditions, and genetics can all impact the ability to hear. If you’re hearing differently than you used to, come in for an evaluation. Be proactive now to prevent additional loss later. Learning to hear better is a team effort, and support is part of the journey - and of course we’re with you every step of the way.

OFFICER JIM COLVIN WILL BE SWORN IN AS BRENTWOOD’S NEW POLICE CHIEF

NEW BRENTWOOD POLICE CHIEF

The Brentwood Police Department was founded in 1971. Many male and female police officers with professional staff have served our community since then.

“THE

MEN AND

Approximately 200 graduates are from the USA, and 50 are international graduates. This program offers classes in leadership, law, women in law enforcement,

WOMEN

WHO SERVE HERE ARE DEDICATED SERVANTS WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR OTHERS."

The Brentwood Police Department headquarters on Heritage Way has been in service since 2021, with civic servants such as Assistant Police Chief Jim Colvin serving the city of Brentwood. Colvin has been in law enforcement for 20 years, starting out as a Patrol Officer in 2004. Rising up the ranks, he went from Patrol Officer to Detective, Patrol Sergeant to Patrol Lieutenant to Patrol Captain. Next, becoming Assistant Chief of Police and now the new Chief of Police this month. Colvin will be the 5th Chief of Police for the Brentwood Police Department, following Chief Hickey.

More than equipped for the job, Colvin has an extensive training resume, having graduated from the FBI National Academy with only 250 other law enforcement officers worldwide.

and other areas of study pertaining to law enforcement.

Colvin grew up in Illinois but moved to Tennessee when he was 13 years old. In elementary school, his D.A.R.E. Officer Ron Campo deeply impacted him and inspired him to pursue a job within this field. Also, his Uncle Wayne was a highway patrol officer and had the best stories from the job. Colvin studied Criminal Justice and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin. He then obtained his Master’s in Emergency Management from Jacksonville State University. His studies included how to respond to large-scale disasters and minor emergencies. He studied preparedness, response, and recovery phases for those disasters.

Colvin will be appointed as the BPD's Police Chief on February 24th in a pinning ceremony at the city commission meeting. He will then be sworn in and take an oath to serve our community with the utmost care. Family and friends will be present, and Colvin says he will probably celebrate by going out to dinner with them.

Colvin would like to thank his wife, Angie, and all those who have supported him throughout the years. Angie “has been the rock” for his family and him. Through the tough hours and hard work, Colvin is “unbelievably grateful” for her.

“The men and women who serve here are dedicated servants willing to sacrifice for others. The Brentwood community is so supportive of our officers,” said Colvin.

For young adults who want to consider a career in law enforcement, “I would tell them that law enforcement is a noble and rewarding profession,”

"THE BRENTWOOD COMMUNITY IS SO SUPPORTIVE OF OUR OFFICERS."

Colvin says.  “They should focus on their education and take care of their physical and mental health.  It is also important to avoid drugs and be intentional about the company they keep. Lastly, I would encourage them to get involved in community programs and find ways to serve others while they wait for their law enforcement career to begin.”

Colvin will soon be sporting a new badge of achievement. His current gold badge will be traded in from Assistant Police Chief to Police Chief. The police department is a paramilitary organization structured like the military; therefore, badges, stars, and insignia are earned within the department. Gold badges are for sergeant rank and above, and silver for patrol officers. Colvin will proudly wear his new gold badge with honor and dignity and is incredibly dedicated to serving this community.

MUCH MORE THAN JUST DECKS

During its 42 years in business, Keystone Custom Decks has expanded its offerings beyond decks. It can now create amazing outdoor living spaces with fireplaces, kitchens, patios, water features, and more.

Founded in Pennsylvania by Amos Esh, it continues its legacy as a family-owned and operated business. “Amos passed away a few years ago, but sons Marv, the CEO, and Michael, the CFO, are running the business,” says marketing manager Marcus Stoltzfus.

The excellent service and high-quality, high-end craftsmanship that has made the company so successful since 1983 has not wavered. Last year, Keystone Custom Decks opened an office in Greenbrier.

“The nice thing is that our general manager and some of our crew members in Tennessee used to work in Pennsylvania,” he says. “So, it's the same type of craftsmanship and customer service that we’ve always provided. Our ownership team is also very involved.”

Being able to handle so many aspects of outdoor spaces means that homeowners don’t have to work with multiple contractors.

“It’s all one team, so there's no conflict of communication, which can cause stress on the homeowner. We take care of everything, including all the permits, which is a huge win for the customer.” The company builds yearround and can install outdoor heating systems so people can enjoy these spaces even in the middle of winter.

Since every project is customized and tailored to the client, a salesperson will make an initial visit to take measurements and send up a drone to fly around the property.

“We capture all the images and videos that are needed and they send that to our design team,” says Marcus. “Every single person that walks through our door gets a custom 3D complimentary rendering which usually

culminates in a minute and a half video. No matter what you need, we'll design it and build it.”

While customized outdoor areas can be expensive to do all at once, Keystone can do it in phases, according to customers’ wants and needs. “Oftentimes, they are so happy with us that they ask us back for phase two and phase three, or if they’ve moved to a new house, they ask us to come out again.”

The company also believes it’s important to educate clients when it comes to materials.

“We recently did a project in Brentwood where they tore out their old deck, and then we were able to come in and rebuild it,” he says. “In PA, composite PVC decking material is the norm, but here, they're still building wood decks. This is where the education comes in. We are creating products that are going to last for a long time, maintenance free.”

CONTINUED >

“IT’S

While wood will rot, he explains that composite decking is going to last forever and actually look better. There’s no need to re-stain it or do anything to it.

Another important company value is hospitality. “For example, in PA, if you sign a

contract, we have a wine cellar, so you get a bottle of wine. Or, during a project, if a foreman or a salesperson finds out something about the client  - let's say they’re having a birthday or unfortunately went through a funeral - we'll send flowers.”

While building outdoor kitchens, they have filled refrigerators with customers’ favorite drinks and have even given them tickets to see their favorite sports teams.

These thoughtful gestures mean a lot.

“When you look at Google reviews, typically you'll see a sentence or two, but the folks that work with us leave two, three, four-paragraph reviews,” says Marcus. “It really speaks to our reputation and the kind of people who are in your backyard every day.”

ROCKING THE HOUSE

A Local “Surf” Band With A Bit Of Twang

When Colony House plays music, they want listeners to not only enjoy it, but feel a sense of connection too. “One of the reasons we sing these songs with each other is to feel less alone in the world, and we hope that it does that for others too,” says Caleb Chapman, frontman and guitar player.

Caleb and his brother, drummer Will Chapman, have been creating music together most of their lives. A family friend, who they called Uncle Dave, tour managed the Highwaymen for decades.“We grew up hearing stories about them,” says Caleb. “They’re like the original trailblazers for knuckleheads like us trying to make a mark.”

In 2009, Scott Mills added his guitar skills to the band. “My only friend at college turned out to be Caleb and Will's cousin, and around that time they wanted to start a band,” recalls Mills. “My friend laid on a super shameless plug for me.”

Photo

It worked, and after Mills received the classic “Let’s jam sometime” text, Colony House was formed, and the rest is history. “Scott and I moved into the Colony House apartments in Franklin when we started getting serious about the band,” says Will. And the name stuck.

Colony House dropped its first record, When I Was Younger, in July 2014. One of its singles, "Silhouettes," was the most-played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four consecutive months and the album reached number three on Billboard’s Heatseeker’s Chart.

When bassist Parke Cottrell joined in 2016, the connection was complete. “Parke jumped on the When I Was Younger tour to fill in for our previous bass player while he got married, and he just never left,” laughs Mills.

The band jokingly classifies their music as landlocked surf rock. “One of our mentor/idol bands growing up was Switchfoot, and Will and I met them in a mall back in the day,” says Caleb.“Long story short, they invited us to play at their annual charity event in San Diego in 2015.”

Switchfoot, a surfing term, was also founded by two brothers who were surfers as well as musicians. When they heard Colony House play, they said they sounded like a surf band from Tennessee. The new genre was born and, seemingly, working. Their surf-rock hit, "You Know It," went viral on TikTok, and has amassed over 100 million streams across all platforms.

All Tennessee born and bred, many of their songs are full of nostalgia and love for their home state, which is especially reflected in their latest album, The Cannonballers, released in February 2023. The lead single, "Cannonballers", whose name is derived from the now-defunct Opryland rollercoaster -The Wabash Cannonball - scored a top 10 on alternative radio.

“One of the reasons we sing these songs with each other is to feel less alone in the world, and we hope that it does that for others too.”

The band checked another box on its list of goals by releasing a three-song Christmas EP,  Every Christmas, at the end of last year. They also recently visited Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to sing holiday songs to children with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. “If we can help them feel a little less scared during the holidays, that’s way more important than playing a sold-out show,” says Caleb. “Music is fun, but it's also a vessel to do things that matter.”

In addition to international touring, selling out the Ryman Auditorium and playing Bonnaroo all in the same year, the band has performed twice on both  Late Night with Seth Meyers and Conan , twice respectively, as well as TODAY, VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live, and MTV Live - and they don’t have plans to slow down any time soon.

Love Thy Skin

COURTNEY ALLEN, OWNER OF CANVAS SKIN, SHARES SKINCARE TIPS FOR EVERY AGE AND STAGE

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN REGARDLESS OF AGE?

Taking care of your skin is crucial at any age because it serves as both a preventative and corrective practice. Starting early helps protect your skin from future damage, maintain its health, and delay signs of aging. For those addressing existing concerns, not only can the right skincare regimen correct issues, but preventative procedures categorized under regenerative health—such as biostimulators and lasers like Moxi and BBL—can actively maintain and even reverse signs of aging. Your skin is your largest organ and reflects your overall health, so investing in it not only boosts your confidence but also enhances your long-term well-being. At Canvas Skin, we believe in embracing beauty from the inside- out, combining innovative treatments with personalized care for every stage of life.

ARE THERE ANY MEDSPA TREATMENTS OR FACIALS THAT ARE SAFE AND BENEFICIAL FOR TEENAGERS?

Skincare is always a great place to start for teenagers, especially since they are more prone to acne and related skin concerns. Using medical-grade skincare tailored to these issues can make a significant difference. Products containing ingredients like Tretinoin, Retinol, Benzoyl Peroxide,  and Salicylic Acid are excellent options. Our Imera Toner Pads are particularly popular with teens—they’re affordable, easy to use, and highly effective in maintaining clearer skin.

In addition to a solid skincare routine, treatments like microneedling and chemical peels are safe and beneficial for teenagers. These treatments can help reverse acne scarring, improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and boost overall skin health. We also recommend incorporating products like retinol and our customized Canvas prescription creams, which can include antibiotics to reduce bacteria and target acne. Starting these habits early not only addresses current concerns but also sets the foundation for healthier skin in the future.

WHAT IS YOUR HOLY GRAIL SKINCARE PRODUCT THAT YOU SELL AT CANVAS SKIN?

Our holy grail skincare products at Canvas Skin are the Ela Radiance Brightening Pads and the  Kalo Beauty Cream. The Ela Radiance Pads contain kojic acid and arbutin, which effectively reduce pigmentation and brighten the overall skin tone. On the other hand, the Kalo Beauty  Cream is our high-end luxury cream packed with vitamins A, C, and E—essentially every vitamin your skin could need in a single bottle.

However, the excitement doesn't stop there! We’re currently developing our very own product,  which has been long-awaited and meticulously designed to

achieve skincare perfection. Once launched, I predict this will become the ultimate Canvas holy grail product!

WHAT ARE THE MAIN SKINCARE CHALLENGES FOR ADULTS IN THEIR 30S AND 40S, AND HOW CAN TREATMENTS HELP TACKLE THOSE ISSUES?

In your 30s and 40s, skincare challenges often revolve around fine lines, changes in skin texture, and increased dryness due to declining collagen and hormonal changes. For many, this is also a busy, on-the-go stage of life—especially during the child-rearing years— where self-care often takes a backseat. I can personally relate, as my skincare routine drastically shifted after having three children in the past few years.

To tackle these challenges, combining practical products with effective treatments is key. Our  Imera Toner Pads are a lifesaver—they’re easy to use, reduce pore size, remove residue, and refresh the skin. Retinol is a must-have for promoting skin cell turnover, while our Ela Radiance Pads work wonders for reducing pigmentation and maintaining a radiant glow when used every other day.

For treatments, Botox is an excellent option for preventing wrinkles and enhancing skin glow.  I’m also a huge fan of consistent, easy microneedling—minimal to zero downtime—and I  personally do it every two months. It keeps my skin plump, reverses summer damage, and boosts  overall skin health. Another standout treatment is SKINVive, an exciting new injectable resurfacing procedure. It stimulates the production of aquaporins, which draw in water and deeply hydrate the skin—perfect for combating dryness caused by hormonal changes.

At Canvas Skin, we focus on practical solutions tailored to your stage of life. Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated, but consistency and personalization make all the difference.

WHAT AGE IS IDEAL TO START INCORPORATING PREVENTATIVE ANTI-AGING TREATMENTS?

The ideal age to start incorporating preventative anti-aging treatments like Botox or fillers typically falls in your 20s to 30s, depending on your facial anatomy, expressive muscle activity,  and overall skin goals. For individuals with strong expressive muscles that may lead to dynamic wrinkles, starting Botox earlier can help prevent those lines from becoming static over time.

Fillers, on the other hand, can address early volume loss or enhance facial features to achieve a natural, youthful look. Ultimately, it’s not just about age—it’s about assessing your unique anatomy and creating a personalized plan that aligns with your goals. At Canvas Skin, we  emphasize preventative care to help maintain a refreshed and confident appearance for years to  come."

IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE UNIVERSAL SKINCARE TIP THAT APPLIES TO ANYONE, REGARDLESS OF AGE OR LIFESTYLE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

My universal skincare tip is to focus on two everyday basics: Retinol or Tretinoin at night and  Vitamin C during the day. Retinol promotes skin cell turnover, helping to keep your skin smooth,  prevent fine lines, and address a variety of concerns like acne or texture. Vitamin C, on the other hand, is a powerhouse antioxidant that brightens

the skin, protects against environmental damage, and promotes collagen production. These two essentials form the foundation of any effective skincare routine, regardless of age or lifestyle, and can make a noticeable difference in your skin's health and appearance.

HOW DO YOU TAILOR TREATMENTS FOR DIFFERENT GENERATIONS, AND WHAT CAN INFLUENCE THESE DIFFERENT TREATMENTS?

We tailor treatments for different generations by focusing on each patient’s unique goals,  concerns, and stage of life. Skincare and aesthetic needs vary greatly between someone in their 20s focused on prevention and glow and someone in their 40s or 50s looking to address volume loss, fine lines, or dryness caused by hormonal changes.

At Canvas Skin, we always meet people where they are. Whether it’s preventative treatments like  Botox or microneedling

for younger patients or advanced solutions like fillers, biostimulators such as sculpture and Radiesse, or cutting-edge options like SKINVive for more mature skin,  every treatment is personalized. We believe in listening to our patients and creating customized  plans to help them achieve their best skin at any age."

ARE THERE ANY INNOVATIVE TREATMENTS OR TECHNOLOGIES IN THE MEDSPA INDUSTRY THAT BENEFIT CLIENTS AT SPECIFIC STAGES OF LIFE?

One of the most innovative treatments we offer is Sciton’s Moxi/BBL laser, which is truly a game-changer in the medspa industry. This advanced technology is versatile and delivers incredible results for patients at various stages of life. Whether you’re in your 20s looking to refine pore size and enhance skin brightness or in your 40s or 50s addressing melasma,  pigmentation, discoloration, texture, or fine lines, this laser is tailored to meet those needs.

The combination of Moxi and BBL not only rejuvenates the skin but also delivers long-term benefits by stimulating collagen production and improving skin tone. It’s a treatment we’re passionate about because it empowers patients to achieve healthier, more radiant skin at any age.

Meet the Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry Team Where Art Meets Science – Delivering Excellence in Both General and Cosmetic Dentistry

the Smiles

Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry is among the nation’s elite and pioneering practices for cosmetic dentistry. Their award-winning team specializes in conservative, minimally invasive dentistry and custom smile design that can be found on some of the most famous smiles in the world. Founded in 1996 by Dr. Dennis Wells, a pioneer in the field of cosmetic dentistry and innovator behind DURAthin and Microthin prepless veneers, Dr. Wells has dedicated his career to setting the standard for Smile design.

Continue reading to learn more about the incredible team of dentists at Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry, each personally selected and mentored by Dr. Wells himself.

DR. JAKE BATEMAN

Dr. Bateman is a third-generation dentist with a passion for excellence. Achieving fellowship status in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentists, and the Academy of General Dentistry, the cosmetic, restorative, and reconstructive dentist has served as president of the First District Tennessee Dental Association and is currently a candidate for Accreditation in the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry – a title held by only 260 dentists worldwide!

“Believing in and providing the best responsible aesthetics available is what led me to Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry,” Dr. Bateman shares. “Building confidence and self-worth drives us to be our best every day… It is incredibly rewarding.”

While attending Ohio State University, Dr. Bateman became a twotime all-American, two-time team captain, and Big Ten Freshman of the Year athlete. He met his wife, Laurel, in dental school, and they live in Brentwood, where they are raising their three daughters.

DR. ALYSSA LAMBERT

Dr. Lambert didn’t always know she wanted to be a dentist; after working hard to put herself through college, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Memphis and volunteered in her community through the Christian Mobile Dental Clinic – a place she credits with sparking her passion for dentistry.

“When I realized how dentistry could change people’s lives for the better, I saw a pathway to change the direction of my life and give to others,” she shares. “That’s when I fell in love with dentistry and developed my passion for it.”

Dr. Lambert received her dental degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis and has earned international recognition for excellence in dental research and clinical application. She explains that helping people feel confident with their smile is what she loves most about her career. While she shares that she can easily “nerd out on millimeters and shades of color that many would never think of,” the highlight of her day is being around the Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry team and clients!

Dr. King received his undergrad from Auburn University and then attended The Dental College of Georgia.

Beyond dentistry, Dr. King shares that his greatest joy comes from his family. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two children and share that it is an honor to be part of the Brentwood community.

“It’s incredibly fulfilling to serve people in this community and help them feel confident and proud of their smiles… it’s about more than aesthetics; it’s about helping people feel their best and empowering them to share that confidence with others. I’m grateful to contribute to a community that values connection, warmth, and excellence,” he shares.

DR. DANIEL WEESE

Specializing in Prosthodontics, Dr. Weese has always had a passion for dentistry. From a young age, he found that three of his greatest joys were science, creativity, and helping people. After earning his Biology degree at Samford University, he pursued an intense three-year residency in Prosthodontics at the University of Alabama Birmingham.

“I wanted to be the dentist other dentists call when they’re stuck… the kind who remembers that obscure technique from the 1960s that could save the day,” Dr. Weese shares. “I just couldn’t leave school knowing there was a whole other level of expertise out there, so I dove in for three more

years, got a little too obsessed with the details, and now here I am - making teeth look great and function even better, one over-caffeinated day at a time.”

With over twelve years at Nashville Aesthetic Dentistry, Dr. Weese’s advanced training to understand principles like biomechanics, aesthetics, and science allows him to approach complex cases with creativity and precision.

“There’s nothing quite like seeing someone’s face light up when they see their new smile – or the relief they feel when we fix something other providers overlooked or didn’t know how to handle,” Dr. Weese explains. “At the end of the day, I’m just lucky to do what I love. Dentistry isn’t just my career – it’s what I’m made for. If I can make someone’s life a little better, one smile or tooth at a time, that’s a win in my book.”

A Celebration of Art

ENJOY AN EVENING OUT WITH TWO LOCAL ARTISTS

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Michael Poindexter
Sarah Kaufman

Since opening its doors in 1978, Bennett Galleries Nashville has featured a wide variety of both established and emerging artists, showcasing their contemporary fine art paintings and sculptures. Many of these have included very talented local artists.

“We usually have between 20% and 25% Nashville/Davidson County Metro artists on our roster,” says marketing manager Melanie Davis. “When you add in our regional artists – those in Murfreesboro, Franklin, and Columbia - that number is closer to 30% to 40%.”

On Saturday, March 29, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the gallery will be hosting an art reception highlighting two such artists. Sherrie Russ Levine and Sarah Kaufman, explains Melanie, both started as landscape painters portraying the scenic beauty of Tennessee. “Sarah mostly focuses on the parks around Nashville, but Sherrie has actually switched her focus beyond Tennessee.”

Levine has been represented at Bennett for over 15 years. “She’s been doing a lot of plein-air painting in Europe - France and Italy specifically - and some in Spain too,” says Melanie. “It’s really

exciting to watch her grow as an artist and modify the way she puts paint on the canvas.”

While Kaufman, who has been painting for over 30 years, is newer to the gallery, she has collections all over the world. Her focus is portraying the way light bounces and fractures through the architectural path of a forest.

The reception is open to all – no tickets needed – and guests can enjoy appetizers and beverages while viewing collections from Levine and Kaufman, plus the gallery’s other hundreds of artists as well.

“As a gallery, people may feel kind of intimidated coming in, but we want them to feel comfortable rubbing elbows with both the art and the artists,” she says. Both artists are expected to be on hand that evening. “Meeting artists gives people a sense of connection to the artwork.”

People should also feel free to come in to browse; they don’t necessarily have to buy anything. “We are not a hard-sell gallery,” says Melanie. “We want them to enjoy coming in to see some beautiful art. Especially on a rainy or cold day. What a great respite!”

Others come in for Bennett’s incredible ready-made framing selections and custom framing, including archival, museum-quality materials and European moldings. There are also caring and skilled staff to guide customers with their choices.

“We have a variety of people who come in because of that, so we really try to have a wide variety of price points available in all of our departments, whether it's art or custom framing,” she says.

Over the years, the gallery has had a lot of repeat customers, as well as many new customers. Stop in on March 29 to meet the artists and see their incredible works.

Sarah Kaufman:

Kaufman gains her inspiration from the landscapes around Tennessee. First, she captures photographic images. Then, she displays them on a large screen in her studio to give her a feeling of being back in those woods. Using color, light, and geometric forms, she replicates the beauty of nature on canvas.

Sherrie Russ Levine:

A landscape artist originally focused on the scenic beauty of Tennessee, Levine has expanded her horizons. “She’s gone from doing large swaths of color that turn into very beautiful and serene lake scenes to these plein air paintings that are more finely detailed,” says Melanie.

VALENTINE’S DINNER IN

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with This Delicious Dish for a Romantic Dinner at Home

The Feast of Saint Valentine was started in 496 by Pope Gelasius to honor a Christian martyr who died on February 14th, many years before. fiery Moroccan chicken recipe that is easy to try this Valentine’s. This recipe adds just the right amount of spice with warm and comforting flavors. The bold entrée will transport you two to a date in a Mediterranean oasis, and your hot dish will be delighted with this dish for two. Don’t forget a delicious dessert. No one is sweeter than your honey, but this dessert recipe is just about close. You’ll be saying, “I wouldn’t trade you for a million dollars, but for a million heart cheesecake…probably.”

MILLION HEART CHEESECAKE

Ingredients for crust:

• 1 ½ cups finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies

• 5 tablespoons unsalted melted butter

• 1/3 cup granulated sugar

• Pinch of salt

Ingredients for raspberry coulis:

• 1-pint raspberries

Ingredients for filling:

• Two 8-ounce packages of cream cheese softened to room temperature

• 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Pinch of salt

• 1 ¼ cups heavy cream

Equipment:

• 9-inch springform pan

• Small squeeze bottle

• Toothpick

Directions:

1. For the crust: Preheat the oven to 350°F

2. Mix the cookie crumbs, butter, granulated sugar, and salt in a bowl. Press into the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of a 9-inch springform pan. Put the pan on a baking sheet and bake until set about 10 minutes. Let cool completely.

3. For the raspberry coulis: Puree the raspberries in a food processor or blender until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer to remove any seeds. Transfer to an eyedropper or small squeeze bottle.

4. For the filling, Combine the cream cheese, confectioners' sugar, vanilla, and salt in a medium bowl and beat with an electric mixer on medium until smooth, about 5 minutes. In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream to medium peaks. Fold the cream cheese mixture into the whipped cream until just combined, being careful not to deflate the whipped cream.

5. Pour the batter into the crust. Tap the pan on the counter gently a couple of times to release any air bubbles. Squeeze chickpea-size dots of the raspberry coulis 1/4 inch apart on the top of the cheesecake in a spiral pattern. Starting with the outermost raspberry dot, drag a toothpick or skewer through the centers of the dots to create hearts, making sure to follow the spiral pattern. Chill the cheesecake in the refrigerator uncovered until set to the touch, about 2 hours.

Here's to a great night in with the one you cherish and love. As they say, the way to the heart is through the stomach. Happy Valentine’s Day!

A historic piece of Nashville’s Landscape: The Germantown Inn

Nestled in the heart of Nashville’s historic Germantown neighborhood, The Germantown Inn invites you to immerse yourself in a rich tapestry of history and charm. From its roots as the city’s first suburb to its modern-day allure, Germantown holds a special place in Nashville’s story.

Mayter Scott
From its roots as the city’s first suburb to its modern-day allure, Germantown holds a special place in Nashville’s story.

Germantown’s story begins in the mid-19th century, when waves of German immigrants arrived, seeking refuge from economic hardship. This influx of industrious newcomers shaped the area into a thriving suburb characterized by distinct Victorian architecture and bustling streets. Fast forward to the 1970s: the neighborhood underwent a major revitalization, culminating in its designation as a Registered Historic District in 1979. Today, Germantown offers an inviting mix of history and modernity, with its charming streets, historic homes, and flourishing local businesses.

But Germantown is more than its architecture and history. It’s also a haven for nature enthusiasts, proudly recognized as a city arboretum by the Nashville Tree Foundation. Over 100 species of native trees thrive in the area, providing a serene, leafy canopy for residents and visitors alike. Strolling through Germantown, you’ll

discover a unique blend of walkability, award-winning restaurants, boutique shops, and cultural attractions such as the Tennessee State Museum, Nashville Farmers’ Market, and First Horizon Park.

At the heart of this storied neighborhood lies The Germantown Inn, housed in one of Germantown’s oldest buildings. Built in 1865 by German immigrant H.H. Wallman, the two-story Federal-style home served as both a residence and a testament to Wallman’s craftsmanship. A prominent shoemaker for Nashville’s elite, Wallman’s legacy endures in the historic charm of this beautifully preserved property, fondly known by locals as “The Wallman House.”

The house remained in the Wallman family for generations until the mid-1900s, witnessing Germantown’s evolution over the decades. In 2015, local entrepreneurs Jim Creason and Phil Hyde saw an opportunity to reimagine this historic treasure.

According to Creason (managing partner of The Germantown Inn and president of Germantownbased Trust Development, LLC), Hyde had the original vision for opening a boutique hotel. He discovered the unique property at 1218 6th Ave North and commissioned an architect to envision its transformation. Hyde brought Creason on board, and after a one-year restoration and addition project, The Germantown Inn opened its doors with much enthusiasm on New Year’s Eve 2016.

“Much of the brick exterior and interior walls were restored along with naming the individual rooms after U.S. Presidents and prominent women from the mid to late 1800s,” Creason explained, emphasizing the historical authenticity woven into the design. Today, The Germantown Inn boasts 10 bespoke guestrooms, each uniquely designed to honor the building’s historic character while offering modern comforts. The inn’s amenities include a lush outdoor courtyard, perfect for quiet reflection, and a chic private rooftop terrace, which offers stunning views of downtown Nashville and the surrounding neighborhood.

When asked about his favorite aspect of owning a hotel in Nashville, Creason shared, “More than anything, I enjoy how impressed people are with the quality of our service and the people we have hosting our guests. Our team is really what makes the difference, and having friends or visitors to Nashville experience the décor and quality of stay is very rewarding to both Phil and me.”

The Germantown Inn is more than just a boutique hotel—it’s a vibrant venue for creating cherished memories. Creason highlighted the property’s versatility, noting, “It really is a fantastic spot for smaller weddings and corporate events. Our team does a fantastic job working with event planners to transform the property into a fabulous space, incorporating the front courtyard, carriage house patio

area, and rooftop into a multi-use experience for events.”

The Germantown Inn’s appeal is deeply rooted in its ability to seamlessly blend history with modern hospitality. Each guestroom’s unique design reflects a historical figure or era, connecting visitors with the past while providing contemporary luxury. The surrounding neighborhood, with its eclectic mix of old-world charm and vibrant modern culture, serves as the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable stay. This rich fusion of past and present is why The Germantown Inn continues to attract guests from near and far. Whether you’re seeking a quiet retreat, a lively cultural experience, or the perfect setting for a special event, the inn

delivers on all fronts. From the carefully curated rooms to the welcoming outdoor spaces and unmatched service, every aspect of the inn is designed to create lasting memories.

With its rich history, vibrant community, and luxurious accommodations, The Germantown Inn is more than a place to stay—it’s a gateway to experiencing the best of Germantown and Nashville. Whether you’re savoring the serene courtyard, enjoying the rooftop views, or exploring the neighborhood’s culinary and cultural treasures, you’re sure to leave with memories that will last a lifetime. Come for the history, stay for the hospitality, and discover the enduring charm of The Germantown
