Roof Take A Beating This Winter?

Inspired Living: Home Sweet Home

March is here, bringing its signature mix of roaring winds and hints of spring warmth—true to the saying, "in like a lion, out like a lamb." It’s a month that keeps us guessing but also promises brighter, warmer days ahead. While we wait for spring to fully bloom, there’s still time to savor the cozy comforts of winter. If you’re craving a hearty, soul-warming meal, turn to page 24 for a chicken pot pie recipe that’s sure to bring warmth to your kitchen and your table.

This issue is all about one thing: home. After all, home is where the heart is—and let’s be honest, where the chaos is too, but that’s part of its charm. For us, home is in Martinsville, where we reside with our four daughters, guinea pig S'mores, and our new au pair—because apparently, five females in the house wasn’t enough, so we decided to add one more! My husband Jake jokes that he’s vastly outnumbered and is considering petitioning for a “No Girls Allowed” man cave.

While planning this home issue it occurred to me that my design expertise doesn’t go far beyond rearranging throw pillows and calling it a makeover, but that’s why we called in the experts and packed this issue with gorgeous home photos that will have even the least Pinterest-savvy among us feeling inspired. Whether you’re planning a remodel or simply want to admire picture-perfect kitchens, this edition has something for everyone. Keep it on your coffee table— or at least within arm’s reach—for months (or even years!) to come.

We’re also thrilled to share this month’s City List, where you, our wonderful readers, voted for your favorite home-related businesses in categories like flooring, HVAC, interior design, and more. Turn to page 12 to see which local gems earned the title of Readers’ Choice. Spoiler alert: the competition was fierce, and the winners are nothing short of fabulous. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram— @bridgewater_somerset_hills—to stay in the loop for future categories.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes every month. It truly makes our day when we hear from readers who found inspiration or discovered a new local business because of something we published. So don’t be a stranger—drop us a note, tag us in your Instagram stories, or say hi if you see us around town.

Cheers,

March 2025

JOHN COLANERI ON CRAFTING HOMES AND CREATING IMPACT

From crafting renovations on TV to executing high-profile projects for clients nationwide, Bergen County local John Colaneri’s journey in the design and building industry has been nothing short of remarkable. With more than 20 years of experience, including a decade of high-energy work with HGTV, Colaneri has carved out a niche as both a designer and a television personality. As he continues to shape homes and businesses through his firm, Lilyshea LLC, Colaneri offers a fresh perspective on design, blending creativity with precision. For our Home issue, we sat down with Colaneri to explore his career, creative process, and approach to balancing work and family life.

A PASSION SPARKED IN HIGH SCHOOL

John Colaneri’s passion for design and architecture began long before his television career. “Early on at Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes, I discovered my love for design and architecture,” he recalls. “My senior year, I took a drafting class, and that really opened my eyes to the world of building and design. But it wasn’t until I worked in construction during college summers that I realized this was something I wanted to pursue professionally.”

After graduating from Penn State University, Colaneri found his footing in construction, working with his cousin and uncle at Brunelleschi Construction, a development company. The company specialized in converting brownstones and older warehouses into high-end condos in Hoboken and Jersey City.

“I make sure all design materials are selected and delivered before we break ground.”

In 2011, Colaneri’s career took an unexpected turn when HGTV approached him to host a show. “I had no idea what I was getting into,” Colaneri laughs, reflecting on his transition into the media world. “But it was a whirlwind, and I ended up filming more than 100 episodes and three digital series in a decade.” His popularity grew, and alongside his cousin, Anthony Carrino, Colaneri became a beloved figure on shows like Kitchen Cousins and Cousins Undercover.

DESIGNING IN NORTH JERSEY: A UNIQUE CHALLENGE

Colaneri’s expertise in both construction and design has given him a distinctive edge when working in North Jersey. While he’s tackled projects in more than 20 states across the U.S., he believes the tri-state area—especially New Jersey—presents unique challenges. “The regulations here can be a nightmare,” he says. “New Jersey has a lot of paperwork that can slow down the process, and the state is full of older homes that often throw you curveballs once you start tearing down walls.”

Despite these hurdles, Colaneri embraces the challenge, knowing each renovation is a chance to bring out the best in a space. “I always tell my clients to have a 20% contingency in the budget because unexpected issues are almost guaranteed,” he adds. “Old homes can hide all kinds of challenges, from outdated wiring to structural problems.”

THE ART OF BALANCING CLIENT NEEDS AND PERSONAL VISION

When designing a space, Colaneri starts by getting to know his clients. “The first step is always determining how the space is going to function,” he explains. “Once I grasp the function, we can start talking about form.” From there, Colaneri gathers inspiration from both the client’s preferences and his own extensive design knowledge, creating mood boards and material samples to guide the process.

“I always tell my clients that while I can give my professional opinion, at the end of the day, it’s their home,” he says. “Design is personal, and trends are fleeting. I want my work to be timeless.”

TELEVISION AND DESIGN: A HIGH-SPEED LEARNING CURVE

Colaneri's work with HGTV brought him face-to-face with a world that moved at a pace he had never encountered before. “When you’re filming a show and you have a week to build an entire kitchen, the speed is incredible,” he recalls. “We had to plan everything three months in advance, and once the build began, it was nonstop, 24-hour-a-day effort.”

Living Room Renovation
“Seeing the homeowner’s reaction when he saw his new home for the first time—I’ll never forget it.” - JOHN COLANERI

This fast-paced environment shaped the way he runs his own business today. “Now that I’m focused on my own company, Lilyshea LLC, I’m really focused on upfront planning,” he says. “I make sure all design materials are selected and delivered before we break ground. That way, we don’t have to scramble in the middle of a project.”

MEMORIES FROM THE ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW

One of Colaneri’s most memorable projects came from his time working with The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We did a complete home renovation in just seven days for a wounded veteran,” he says. “The speed of the build was intense, but the real motivation came from the purpose behind it. We wanted to create a home that was not just functional, but truly comfortable for someone who had sacrificed so much.”

The project not only challenged Colaneri’s construction skills but also touched him personally. “It was an honor to work on a project that would change someone’s life,” he says. “Seeing the homeowner’s reaction when he saw his new home for the first time—I’ll never forget it.”

DESIGNING FOR HIMSELF

While Colaneri is known for creating stunning spaces for others, designing his own home presented its own set of challenges. “When you work in design, there are so many ideas you want to try,” he admits. “It can be overwhelming. But when it’s your own space, it’s about finding the balance between what you love and what works.”

For Colaneri, this means blending rustic and contemporary elements to create a home that feels both timeless and personal. “I always tell people that when they design their home, they should aim to make people feel something,” he adds. “Whether it’s love or even dislike— just don’t make it forgettable.”

BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY LIFE

Like many professionals, Colaneri’s career can be demanding, but he works hard to balance his professional life with his personal life. “Time is the one thing I wish I had more of,” he says. “But I always make sure to prioritize my family. Work doesn’t feel like work because I love what I do, but at the end of the day, my family is what matters most.”

John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino on the Ellen Show
Laundry Room Renovation
"The first step is always determining how the space is going to function" - John Colaneri

Colaneri’s passion for design is clearly something that runs in the family. “My daughter loves to draw, especially fashion designs,” he says with a smile. “I see a lot of similarities between fashion and design. Trends often overlap, and it’s fun to see her creativity blossom.”

BUILDING WHAT’S NEXT

As for what’s next, Colaneri is focused on expanding his commercial construction management business. “The past few years have been busy with major projects like Patel Brothers grocery stores,” he says. “We’re building 30,000-square-foot locations,

which is a completely different challenge from residential projects. I love the challenge, and I’m excited to see these new stores open in the coming years.”

Though he’s already achieved so much, Colaneri remains passionate about the future. “I’m focused on continuing to grow my business, but I’m also always looking for new opportunities to educate and inspire others,” he says. “If I can find more time, I’d love to do even more!”

For John Colaneri, the journey is far from over. With his drive, expertise, and creative vision, he will undoubtedly continue to shape homes, businesses, and even the next generation of design enthusiasts.

Classic Chicken Pot Pie

A HEARTY AND COMFORTING CLASSIC, PERFECT FOR FAMILY DINNERS

When you think of a warm, comforting home-cooked meal, few dishes come to mind faster than a classic chicken pot pie. This hearty dish combines tender chicken, a medley of vegetables, and a creamy sauce, all wrapped in a golden, flaky pie crust. It’s the ultimate comfort food, perfect for a cozy family dinner or as a way to use up leftover chicken. With its savory flavors and satisfying textures, this chicken pot pie is a meal that feels like a warm hug on a chilly day.

This Chicken Pot Pie recipe brings the warmth and nostalgia of home cooking straight to your table. It’s simple yet flavorful, and with its flaky, buttery crust, it’s sure to become a family favorite!

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 lb cooked chicken (shredded or diced)

• 1 cup carrots, diced

• 1 cup peas (frozen or fresh)

• 1 cup celery, diced

• 1/2 cup onion, diced

• 1/4 cup butter

• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

• 2 cups chicken broth

• 1 cup milk

• 1 tsp garlic powder

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 2 refrigerated pie crusts

• 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). 2. Cook the vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions, carrots, and celery. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are softened. 3. Make the sauce: Stir in the garlic powder and flour. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to lightly brown and form a roux. 4. Add liquids: Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Let the mixture cook for about 5 minutes, or until it thickens. 5. Add chicken and peas: Stir in the cooked chicken and peas. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. 6. Prepare the pie crust: Roll out one pie crust and fit it into the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish. Pour the chicken and vegetable mixture into the crust. 7. Top the pie: Place the second pie crust over the filling. Trim any excess dough, then pinch the edges together to seal. Make a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. 8. Egg wash (optional): For a golden finish, brush the top of the crust with a beaten egg. 9. Bake: Place the pie in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crispy. 10. Cool and serve: Let the chicken pot pie cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy the comforting warmth of a homemade classic!

TRANSFORMING HOMES WITH NATHAN WILSON PAINTING'S EXPERTISE

REFRESH. REPAIR. REVITALIZE.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATHAN WILSON PAINTING

For nearly 17 years, Nathan Wilson Painting has been revitalizing homes in the area, blending exceptional craftsmanship with unparalleled customer service. At the helm of this thriving business is owner Justyn Valverde, who has dedicated his career to helping homeowners refresh their spaces with confidence and care.

FROM VISION TO REALITY

Valverde’s inspiration for starting Nathan Wilson Painting stemmed from his desire to restore the beauty of homes in need of attention.

“Every town has beautiful homes with amazing architecture, but there are always a few that could use a refresh or repair,” Valverde says. “We wanted to give homeowners the opportunity to clean up, refresh, or fix their properties—especially since they live in them. Our goal is for every client to feel proud of their home, free from damaged, cracked, or poorly painted walls.”

WHAT SETS NATHAN WILSON PAINTING APART

With nearly two decades of experience, Nathan Wilson Painting distinguishes itself with a client-focused approach rooted in transparency and exceptional service.

“Customer service is what sets us apart,” Valverde explains. “We always go above and beyond, leaving our clients with something extra. Whether it’s touching up a wornout door or offering a small gift like a branded mug, we love showing our appreciation.”

The company also guarantees quality, using top-tier tools and premium paints, such as Sherwin-Williams products, to ensure longevity. Every project comes with a three-year warranty—an assurance of their commitment to excellence.

A SEAMLESS PROCESS

Nathan Wilson Painting’s process prioritizes communication and meticulous attention to detail. It begins with a neat and punctual consultation, followed by same-day quotes. During the job, the team ensures the work area is thoroughly prepared and cleaned daily. CONTINUED >

PAINTED WITH CARE AND LOVE

Nathan Wilson Painting LLC is a locally owned & operated company that values honesty & integrity in all aspects of our business.

Our dedicated team of professionals have years of hands-on experience, to provide innovative ideas & suggestions tailored to your projects. Our services are customized to your individual needs, paying close attention to the details of each project that we are involved with. We have dedicated our career to the painting of any home or commercial property, interior or exterior.

Not only do we paint, but we transform your property. We are an allaround team, excelling in many different types of paints & styles.

“We do daily walkthroughs with clients to show progress and stay on schedule,” Valverde says. “And before collecting the final payment, we conduct a final inspection to ensure complete satisfaction. We also store project details so clients can easily request touch-ups later.”

SPRING REFRESH TIPS

As spring approaches, Nathan Wilson Painting offers advice for homeowners looking to refresh their spaces:

• Popular Trends: Exterior trends include white walls with black trim for a modern look and the resurgence of stone veneer to enhance concrete foundations.

• Timing: Early spring is ideal for exterior projects, while mid-spring is better for interior repairs due to rain. Late spring and early summer are perfect for non-urgent exterior updates.

• Avoid Common Mistakes: Valverde advises hiring quality contractors and ensuring transparency in materials. “Cheap work often leads to costly fixes,” he says.

For exterior paint longevity, Valverde stresses proactive care: “Don’t wait for paint to chip off completely. Paint protects your siding—delaying can lead to water damage and expensive repairs.”

LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE

Nathan Wilson Painting recently expanded, adding a second van to meet growing demand. This investment allows the team to tackle more projects while maintaining their high standards.

“Our focus is on serving more clients efficiently without compromising quality,” Valverde shares. “We’re excited to continue helping homeowners transform their spaces.”

For homeowners seeking a trusted partner to refresh their homes, Nathan Wilson Painting offers a blend of professionalism, quality, and personal touch that ensures every project exceeds expectations.

Maria Vraniak Grows Osprey's Legacy

Osprey Lane Boutique and owner Maria Vraniak have quickly become staples in the Somerville community. Now, Vraniak is bringing more joy to the area with the recent opening of her second store, The Osprey Nest, in downtown Somerville.

Located just down the street from Osprey Lane, The Osprey Nest offers unique home decor and gift items. Drawing inspiration from stores like Anthropologie and Pottery Barn, the boutique features both seasonal and year-round products to meet every decor need.

“At holiday time, whether it’s fall, Valentine’s Day, or Easter, customers can come in for gifts or seasonal decor,” Vraniak explains. “But we also want to be the go-to place when customers are redecorating or moving. Whether they need a picture, lamp, mirror, or something really unique to enhance their nest, we’re here for them.”

While Osprey Lane previously sold some home accessories, it lacked the space for everything Vraniak envisioned. When a new retail space opened in downtown Somerville, she saw the perfect opportunity to expand her offerings and leverage her brand.

“When that space opened up, we saw it as a great chance to bring more retail to downtown, especially with new apartments going up across the street,” she says. “We wanted to both enrich and participate in the growth in the area.”

Vraniak worked quickly with her family to launch The Osprey Nest before the holiday season. “My goal was to focus on seasonal items for the grand opening,” she notes. The store was ready in just three weeks, opening its doors on November 17.

“We hustled to get inventory, brought in carefully curated products, and moved items from Osprey Lane,” she recalls. “It was a lot of work, but our team is absolutely amazing.”

The biggest challenge Vraniak faced was managing both stores simultaneously. “The hardest part was finding the time to maintain Osprey Lane while opening The Osprey Nest,” she admits. “I wanted to make sure both businesses were running smoothly and up to the reputation of our brand that we’ve built.”

Despite the challenges, Vraniak is committed to Somerville. “I couldn’t imagine having another store elsewhere,” she shares. “It’s great being able to provide our customers an experience at both stores with just a short walk down the street.”

To help with the growing workload, Vraniak hired a merchandising manager, Lauren, who handles inventory and purchasing for The Osprey Nest. “She’s been a huge help and has taken a lot off my plate,” Vraniak says.

Since its opening in 2023, Osprey Lane has gained a strong local following, and Vraniak is focused on maintaining that positive reputation at The Osprey Nest. “People know it’s the same owner, so the vibe and passion will be the same,” she affirms. “Downtown Somerville is experiencing another growth surge, and it’s exciting to be part of it.”

Vraniak is actively working to spread the word about The Osprey Nest through social media and wordof-mouth. “We’re here for the community,” she emphasizes, adding that she is eager for feedback from local customers. “We want to know what people want to see here.”

In just over a month since its opening, Vraniak has seen her hard work pay off, with strong local support for The Osprey Nest. “It’s been a lot of work, but also incredibly satisfying,” she says. “The town has been so welcoming, and we’ve received great feedback.”

Though Vraniak is relatively new to the retail world, she brings a wealth of experience from her previous corporate career. “I’ve learned a lot along the way, and I’ve adjusted things to make sure they work for this business,” she reflects. “That’s been key to our success.”

The Osprey name, inspired by a town in Venice, Florida, carries a deeper meaning for Vraniak. “Like the Osprey, we want our brand to represent confidence, finding your way through darkness, and being a light for others,” she explains. “We want our customers to feel that Osprey within when they shop with us—whether it’s through new clothes curated for them or for their home.”

Looking ahead, Vraniak is excited for the warmer months and the growth of both Osprey Lane and The Osprey Nest. She hopes to eventually expand the Osprey brand into other New Jersey towns.

For now, Vraniak is focused on the present, grateful for the support of her family and the community. “I couldn’t have done this without my husband, kids, and our amazing customers,” she says. “It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m excited for what’s next.”

AURORA KITCHENS & INTERIORS
Hillsborough renovation – After (open floor concept)
Hillsborough renovation – Before
Hillsborough renovation – Before

Aurora Kitchens & Interiors is not just a remodeling company; it’s a creative force transforming local houses into dream homes. Spearheaded by Kolbe Clark, who has led the company since its inception, Aurora has become synonymous with thoughtful design, innovative solutions, and a remodeling journey like no other. Recently honored as the NARI Remodeler of the Year for 2025, Aurora Kitchens & Interiors continues to push the boundaries of excellence in home transformation, bringing both vision and craftsmanship to every project.

THE ART OF REINVENTION

At Aurora, the remodeling process begins with a question: How can we reimagine your home to fit your lifestyle? This initial inquiry is followed by a series of additional questions, allowing Aurora’s talented team of designers to gather the information necessary for a transformation that typically exceeds clients’ expectations. The designers understand that to effectively enhance a client’s space, it’s essential to recognize what aspects of the current environment are valued, the challenges the homeowner faces, and what their ultimate wish list entails. Clients are presented with a range of options that balance budget and aspirations, using a customized “good, better, best” framework.

This transparent approach ensures every homeowner has the context to make informed decisions and feel confident in their choices.

The real game-changer is Aurora’s investigative process. Before removing a single cabinet, the team thoroughly examines each home, identifying potential challenges that most companies don’t discover until construction is already in progress. This proactive approach is a major reason many homeowners choose Aurora, including Hillsborough residents Karnik Patel and Sheetal Patel. For their project, they had an ambitious wishlist: enlarging the kitchen, creating a more open floor plan, adding functional storage, and incorporating a larger island, gourmet appliances, and a multi-color palette of wood and painted elements.

Aurora Kitchens & Interiors – Female leads evaluating their ‘Good, Better, Best’ framework for success.

To create the desired open floor plan, it became clear that many things would need to be relocated or removed. During the exploration phase, it was discovered that a section of the wall between the original openings to the dining room and the foyer housed structural elements, plumbing supply lines, a drain for the master bath, and gas lines to the second floor. This early discovery allowed Aurora to pivot the design and avoid significant unexpected cost overruns.

While leaving the wall presented technical and aesthetic challenges, the revised design enabled the homeowners to achieve the function, flow, and look they wanted. Removing the walls between the kitchen and dining room and between the kitchen and family room created a spacious, extended

area ideal for hosting large gatherings. The large island functions wonderfully for both prep work and socializing. The multi-tone color scheme blends rich wood textures with soft painted finishes, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The beautiful Cambria quartz backsplash and gold accents in the cabinet hardware, appliance handles, and chandelier added a touch of elegance. The homeowners got the functionality they needed and a space that truly reflected their personal taste and lifestyle.

By addressing complexities early, Aurora not only avoids delays but also empowers homeowners to take control of their budgets and timelines—something rare in the remodeling world.

FROM STRESS TO SATISFACTION

Let’s face it: Remodeling is disruptive. But Aurora Kitchens has turned what

exciting collaboration. The journey begins with a pre-construction prep meeting where the team maps out logistics, lends temporary kitchen essentials, and prepares homeowners for what lies ahead. Weekly updates keep the momentum going, turning confusion into clarity and concerns into excitement.

One client described the experience as “seamless and surprisingly enjoyable,” a testament to the company’s commitment to making clients feel supported at every stage.

INNOVATION MEETS INSPIRATION

Whether it’s a dual shower system or a complete first-floor reconfiguration, Aurora’s designs are as functional as they are stunning, as evidenced in the bold Hillsborough kitchen remodel. Another recent project featured a

jaw-dropping first-floor transformation in Bridgewater for Homeowners Mittul Patel and Nandita Desai-Patel. These aren’t just renovations; they’re reinventions of how people live in their homes. Aurora’s design and production teams collaborate closely throughout the process to ensure every detail aligns with the client’s vision.

In the Bridgewater project, the entire first floor was reconfigured to enlarge the kitchen and add a laundry and shower facility on the first floor. The powder room became part of the kitchen, while the original laundry room was converted into a dual-purpose space—a full bathroom with a walk-in shower and a laundry room with a stackable washer and dryer. The slider and window were relocated to provide more counter space and easy access from the deck to the new dining area. Nearby cabinetry served as a double-duty hutch, offering ample storage and the perfect spot for drinks and desserts during gatherings.
