Take the Leap!

Quoting Rachid Ouedraogo, a fellow Rotarian featured in this month’s issue, his encouragement to “take the leap” and invest in our community is certainly advice that can pay great dividends.

Leaders like Rachid, those who go first, are the ones who inspire us the most. We are truly blessed to have people like him in our community. It’s an honor to partner with members of the Broomfield Rotary Club and shine a spotlight on six current members, including the first woman ever to join the club.

Speaking of local women on a mission to serve the community, Brittany and Hope of Larson Wealth Planners spent some time with us addressing a few of the most common fears and concerns about planning for the future. Their investment advice is something we should all pay attention to! A few minutes spent reading their Q&A in this issue is time well spent.

Investing in community and financial security requires hard work! Caught up in the busyness of life, many of us forget what is perhaps the most important investment—ourselves! “You can’t pour from an empty cup,” a friend once told me, and I couldn’t help remembering those words as I read the story of Travis Mower, an Army Veteran, husband, and father who humbly addressed his hidden wounds of battle so he could be the man his family and community needs here at home. His story is one of the most touching and impactful ones to grace the pages of Broomfield Lifestyle. I hope you enjoy it, and more importantly, I hope you let it shift your perspective.

Be inspired!

Building a Better Broomfield

MEET LOCAL ROTARIANS WHO ARE STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY THROUGH SERVICE AND CONNECTION

What is Rotary? That’s the most-often-asked question I get from the quizzical faces of fellow community members when I mention the club.

The short answer is this: Broomfield Rotary Club is a group of individuals who are dedicated to Service Above Self. If you can remember that, then you’ve got the gist. Great! you might say. Sounds altruistic yet vague. But what exactly does Rotary do?

That’s a great question. We meet once a week at a local venue. The meetings start with a few minutes of casual networking and conversation, and then we get into club business, which involves reviewing service projects and discussing fundraising ideas and initiatives. Most meetings have a keynote speaker, such as a community leader, nonprofit, or local business owner, who shares a short presentation about what they do and how they serve the community.

We are leaders. We are volunteers. We seek out people and organizations who need help and do what needs to be done. We raise money. We take care of each other — we’re a family.

We are DOERS.

You’re welcome to visit and see for yourself, but for this segment of Broomfield Lifestyle, I’m honored to introduce a few of our members who have chosen to invest in your community. They were kind enough to take time out of their busy schedules to share their story and their “why” with you. I’m pleased to introduce Rashid Ouedraogo, Paul Derda, Lauren Robydek, Dotti Moyer, Kevin Godin, and Captain Miguel Morales. Enjoy!

Rachid Ouedraogo, a newer member of the Broomfield Rotary Club, is passionate about supporting local heroes and investing in future generations. He is especially committed to honoring police officers and firefighters for their dedication to keeping the community safe. He also values the club’s involvement with the Imagination Library, which provides free books to children ages 0-5, fostering early literacy and a love of learning.

His admiration for Rotary started with its global impact, particularly its role in eradicating polio in his home country, Burkina Faso. Seeing firsthand how Rotary changes lives, he felt inspired to give back and became actively involved with the Broomfield club.

One of his favorite Rotary memories was during Broomfield Days, where members set up a booth to promote the Imagination Library. The event was filled with community spirit, laughter, music, and meaningful conversations with local families.

Rachid first learned about the Broomfield Rotary Club through its strong community presence and impactful projects. The things he loves most about meetings are the positive atmosphere, the camaraderie, and the engaging guest speakers who address important societal issues.

When inviting a friend to a meeting, he keeps it simple: “Come and have fun!” He sees Rotary as more than just a service organization—it’s a network of dedicated individuals working to improve Broomfield. Rotary is the perfect place to start for those looking to make friends and get involved.

Being part of the club has been incredibly rewarding for Rachid, both personally and professionally. It has helped him build relationships, expand his network, and gain leadership experience. He hopes to encourage young professionals to explore Rotary, seeing it as a place for mentorship, career growth, and meaningful service. His message is clear: “Take the leap!”

“Rotary is the perfect place to start for those looking to make friends and get involved.”
“His involvement in Rotary has enhanced his life through meaningful service, and he hopes to inspire more young professionals to join and carry on this tradition.”

PAUL DERDA “ THE DERD” CITY AND COUNTY OF BROOMFIELD

Paul has been a cornerstone of the Broomfield community for decades, dedicating his time and energy to making a lasting impact. His deep involvement with the Broomfield Rotary Club reflects his commitment to service and leadership. He sees Rotary continuing to play a crucial role in the community’s future, especially in supporting youth programs and meeting the needs of Broomfield’s growing senior population.

For Paul, Rotary has always been at the heart of Broomfield, bringing people together and fostering a strong sense of community. He was drawn to the club because of its members—community leaders who shared his passion for service. Over the years, he has found deep fulfillment in the friendships and projects he has been a part of, emphasizing the camaraderie that makes Rotary meetings so special.

One of his favorite memories is helping build shelters at Outlook Park, a project that exemplifies Rotary’s dedication to improving public spaces. His involvement in Rotary has enhanced his life through meaningful service, and he hopes to inspire more young professionals to join and carry on this tradition. When inviting others to a meeting, he proudly tells them they’ll be surrounded by some of Broomfield’s most dedicated leaders.

After 45 years with the club, Paul remains as passionate as ever about its mission. He believes in the power of Rotary to shape the future of Broomfield, and he hopes that by sharing his story, more people will be encouraged to get involved with this outstanding organization.

LAUREN ROBYDEK

NOTHING BUNDT CAKES, Westminster & Wheat Ridge Owner

Lauren Robydek, a local business owner, has seen how Rotary fosters connections between businesses and community service. While her primary motivation for joining was giving back, she also values the club as a powerful networking platform where business leaders unite. One example of this synergy was a fundraiser at her bakery’s birthday celebration, where 20% of proceeds were donated to Broomfield Rotary, benefiting nonprofits like Bal Swan, Broomfield FISH, A Precious Child, and FRIENDS of Broomfield.

Having been a Rotary member in Nevada before moving to Colorado, Lauren was drawn to Broomfield Rotary for its warmth, energy, and active community involvement. She felt at home immediately.

One of her most touching experiences was participating in the Santa Cops project with her five-year-old daughter, shopping for and distributing gifts to underprivileged children. It was a meaningful moment that reinforced the importance of service.

Lauren first discovered Broomfield Rotary online. She loves the lively, jovial atmosphere of the meetings—and jokingly adds that wine doesn’t hurt! When inviting a friend, she describes it as a service club that meets weekly for dinner, offering a great way to give back, make connections, and have fun.

A key initiative of the club is bringing Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to Broomfield. The program provides free books monthly to children from birth to age five, promoting literacy. So far, the club has enrolled around 700 children and hopes to expand further.

Though juggling two businesses and two children keeps her busy, Lauren remains committed to Rotary, appreciating its flexibility. She hopes to inspire others to join and raise awareness about the Imagination Library, helping even more children develop a love for reading.

DOTTI MOYER WOMEN’S GATHERING/ TOOLS FOR GROWTH

Founder and Coordinator

Dotti Moyer and her family moved to Broomfield in 1964 when the town had just 4,000 residents. From the beginning, she saw Rotary as a vital part of the community, helping start ambulance services, supporting local sports, and shaping Broomfield’s growth.

Inspired by Rotary’s long-standing commitment to service, Dotti found joy, love, and giving at the heart of the organization. She grew up with Rotary influence—her father was a Rotarian in Rochester, NY, where the club organized musical fundraisers and visited veteran hospitals.

What Dotti loves most about Rotary meetings is the camaraderie and volunteer spirit. Members set aside work, come together with open hearts, and focus on helping others. She also values the club’s traditions, like opening with a prayer and pledge of allegiance.

To Dotti, the Broomfield Rotary Club represents grace—built on integrity, acceptance, and inclusion, with politics set aside for the greater good. The club supports both local and global causes, from providing stoves and gardening tools for the Lakota Sioux to volunteering for organizations like Broomfield FISH, Bal Swan Children’s Center, and Broomfield Senior Resources.

As the first woman to join the club in the early 90s, Dotti broke barriers and was welcomed by progressive members who valued teamwork. The friendships she has formed in Rotary have become an essential part of her life, with members supporting each other in both personal and community matters.

By sharing her story, Dotti hopes to inspire a new generation to join Rotary. She believes that in a world longing for connection, Rotary offers an invaluable opportunity to serve and make a lasting impact.

REDEEMER

Kevin Godin joined the Broomfield Rotary Club in search of meaningful service opportunities after moving to the area in October 2022. From the moment he started attending meetings, he was welcomed with open arms, quickly forming friendships with like-minded individuals united by a shared passion for serving the community.

Before Rotary, Kevin struggled to find service opportunities that fit his skills and availability. A friend suggested checking out Rotary, and it turned out to be the perfect match. He enjoys the camaraderie, the opportunity to hear from local leaders, and the lighthearted banter among members.

One of Kevin’s favorite moments was at a Rotary social when he realized he had forgotten his wallet. Ready to leave quietly, a fellow Rotarian immediately insisted on covering his meal—an act of generosity that deeply touched him. It was a small but powerful example of the strong bonds and kindness within the club.

Kevin describes Rotary as a place where people genuinely want to make an impact. Whether someone is passionate about community service, networking, or simply finding a great group of people to connect with, Rotary offers a variety of ways to get involved. He especially appreciates how the club helps him better understand the needs of Broomfield while providing a platform for meaningful action.

As a pastor starting a new church (Redeemer Church Colorado), Kevin values how Rotary allows him to engage with the community more deeply. He sees Rotary as a place where “people impact people,” ultimately changing lives. Through this interview, he hopes to inspire others who are “on the fence” about getting involved— because when more people step up, the entire community benefits.

CAPTAIN MIGUEL MORALES THE SALVATION ARMY Corps Officer

Captain Miguel Morales, an employee of a local nonprofit, has witnessed firsthand how Broomfield Rotary strengthens community organizations by fostering collaboration. A key example is the partnership between The Salvation Army Broomfield Corps and Broomfield FISH, where a shared 7,000-square-foot garden provides fresh vegetables for the community pantry. This interconnection embodies the Rotary logo’s symbolism—a gear representing the power of teamwork in addressing community needs.

Miguel’s Rotary journey began in 2016 when he saw the strong relationship between Rotary and nonprofits. In Santa Cruz, CA, he officially joined the Rotary, inspired by the idea that a machine with more gears functions more efficiently— just as organizations working together can maximize their impact. Upon moving

Through this interview, he hopes to inspire others to get involved, emphasizing that Rotary is not just about volunteering— it’s about meaningful partnerships that create lasting change.

to Broomfield, he immediately sought out the local Rotary club, eager to continue this work.

One of Miguel’s favorite aspects of Rotary is the camaraderie—whether sharing laughter or supporting one another in difficult times, the club fosters deep friendships. He also values the meetings, where guest speakers provide insight into community programs and services that benefit all ages, from youth to seniors.

Miguel is particularly inspired by the Rotary logo, which visually represents the club’s mission of collaboration. He encourages anyone interested in service to visit a meeting, connect with members, and see how they can contribute.

Being part of Rotary has reinforced Miguel’s belief that working together leads to better outcomes and a stronger community. Through this interview, he hopes to inspire others to get involved, emphasizing that Rotary is not just about volunteering—it’s about meaningful partnerships that create lasting change.

BEYOND THE Call OF DUTY

Travis and squad dog, Sierra

“Nothing prepares you for war,” reflects Travis Mower, Army veteran, grateful husband, and girl-dad of two preteens. The Arvada native served ten years, fighting for our freedoms in Iraq and Afghanistan. After witnessing the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th, Travis felt compelled to take action. Putting his college career at Front Range Community College on hold, he visited the Army recruiter’s office off of 88th and Wadsworth, and informed them of his desire to be on the front lines with the US Army. The Pomona High School graduate and journalism hopeful left his life to answer the call of duty.

After completing basic training, Travis persevered through months of specialized training. Understanding and operating different weapons systems and vehicles, strategic planning, chains of command, and more became second nature to him. When Travis deployed to Iraq, he was a well-trained, single-minded soldier. Still, nothing prepared him for the harsh realities of war. “When you’re in battle, your consciousness goes out the window, and all that’s left is a trained individual,” Travis explains. Living in developing nations increased Travis’s gratitude for the order, justice, and organization of our own country. He also highly values

the leadership training, comradery, and discipline the military provided.

When his second tour ended, after living an ocean away from his bride off and on for years, Travis was ready to come home and start a family. Like so many servicemen, however, he returned home with unseen mental and emotional wounds. Veterans experience things most people only imagine in nightmares. Additionally, countless hours of combat and training make re-entering civilian life a battle of its own. The instincts ingrained in combat— hyper-awareness, split-second decisions— became hurdles in everyday situations. For many brave individuals who have sacrificed so much, the transition is overwhelming, rarely understood by those who haven’t served, and incredibly isolating.

Though the government seems to offer plenty of help to returning soldiers, few of these heroes know how to access these resources. A lack of education regarding services offered to veterans compounds the existing internal tug-of-war between the government and the VA. As a result, thousands of retired servicemen and women suffer in silence, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Not only do these individuals endure ongoing agony, but the families and close friends of these incredible people suffer as well.

Travis is no exception. Like so many brave men and women who have served, returning home carrying more than just memories, he bore the invisible wounds of PTSD and the relentless toll of physical ailments. For years, he silently fought battles no one could see, shouldering his pain alone. Navigating veteran benefits and obtaining financial help for these issues proved to be a frustrating challenge. Incredibly, like most veterans, Travis does not quit easily.

“VETERANS

EXPERIENCE THINGS most PEOPLE ONLY

imagine in NIGHTMARES.”

After putting in long hours to receive the help he needed and making significant strides in his healing journey, Travis developed a passion for helping other vets. His heart to serve others and to offer freedom did not end with his military career. Travis continues to live a life of service, not selfishness, now as a mortgage loan officer with Fairway Independent Mortgage. He is passionate about helping people experience the freedom that comes with owning a home. Being a loan officer, specializing in VA loans, provides an excellent venue to connect him with fellow veterans he would not have otherwise met. As Travis builds relationships with his clients, he gets to share snippets of his own journey as a veteran. He enjoys the privilege of walking alongside those who have sacrificed so much and now need a hand in their healing.

Not only does Travis help veterans navigate the VA loan process, but he also connects them to opportunities like Hero’s Puppy for Life. Hero’s Puppy for Life, founded by Vietnam veteran Frank Griggs, takes typical service breed puppies, trains them in basic obedience, and then pairs them with a veteran. The dog and the soldier then go through a nine-month training program together, which in and of itself,

Harper & Harlow Mower
The Mower Family dog, Kylo
“HIS

HEART TO

serve

others TO OFFER FREEDOM

did not END WITH HIS MILITARY CAREER.”

provides healing and purpose for vets. For some servicemen, these pups, who are trained specifically to help with PTSD, have proved life-saving. A dog lover himself, Travis proudly sits on the board for the program, which perfectly blends his two passions: helping veterans and working with dogs.

Travis’s deep connection to dogs isn’t new. During his tour in Afghanistan, he found an unexpected companion in a tiny, near-death puppy. While assisting another unit after an attack, he stumbled upon the five-week-old pup, who bore a striking resemblance to his own dog back home, Kylo. Breaking protocol, he brought her back to base and nursed her to health. His unit quickly grew attached, and together, they persuaded

their sergeant major to let Sierra stay as their squad dog. Once trained, she accompanied them on many missions, comforting soldiers on and off duty. When the time came to return home, Travis ensured Sierra found a loving family in the US where she could live out her well-earned retirement. While not everyone has the experience or expertise to assist veterans like Travis does, we can all play a part in supporting those who have made sacrifices for our freedoms. Whether through donating, volunteering, or simply expressing gratitude, small actions can make a difference. And if you know a veteran in need, connect them with people like Travis—individuals who continue to serve, even beyond their call of duty.

Retirement planning looks different depending on your age and financial position. Whether you’re in your 40s building wealth or in your 60s preparing to transition into retirement, having a solid strategy is essential. Larson Wealth Planners helps clients maximize savings, minimize taxes, and create a clear path toward financial freedom. Here’s how to stay on track.

NAVIGATING RETIREMENT

Planning

Today for a Confident Tomorrow with Larson Wealth Planners

40-60: THE PRIME YEARS—BUILD, GROW, AND SECURE YOUR FUTURE

Mike and Lisa are in their late 40s, juggling demanding careers, a mortgage, and a teenager with college on the horizon. Retirement feels far away—until Mike gets a wake-up call when a coworker, just a few years older, is forced to delay his plans due to financial shortfalls. Are we saving enough? he wonders. Now is the time to take control, maximize savings, and build a secure future strategy.

Q: AM I ON TRACK FOR RETIREMENT?

A: Start by defining your retirement goals. How much will you need to support your ideal lifestyle? Maximize savings by cutting unnecessary expenses, creating a spending plan, and increasing 401(k) or IRA contributions. Catch-up contributions after 50 can boost savings. Adjusting your financial strategy now helps ensure you’re financially prepared for the retirement you envision.

Q: HOW CAN I MAXIMIZE MY INVESTMENTS?

A: In your 40s and 50s, balance growth with protection. Diversify your investments to reduce risk and optimize returns. Reassess your risk tolerance—adjust as needed to meet your retirement goals. Contribute the maximum to tax-advantaged accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs. Regularly reviewing your investment strategy ensures your assets grow while remaining secure for the future.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT HEALTHCARE COSTS IN RETIREMENT?

A: Healthcare is one of retirement’s biggest expenses. Contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA) for taxfree medical savings. If retiring before 65, plan for insurance coverage until Medicare begins. Consider longterm care insurance early—it’s more affordable while you’re younger. Proactively addressing healthcare costs now prevents financial strain in retirement.

Q: HOW CAN I MINIMIZE MY TAXES NOW AND IN RETIREMENT?

A: A tax-efficient strategy keeps more money in your pocket. Max out tax-advantaged accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs, and take advantage of employer-matching contributions. Plan withdrawals strategically—mixing taxable and tax-free income sources can reduce your overall tax burden. With the right approach, you can lower taxes now and in retirement.

Q: HOW DO I BALANCE SAVING FOR RETIREMENT WITH OTHER FINANCIAL GOALS?

A: Prioritize retirement savings—it’s your future income. While college tuition and mortgages are important, your kids can get loans, but no one lends for retirement. Pay off high-interest debt first. If your mortgage has a low rate, investing extra funds may be a better choice. Regularly review estate plans, wills, and beneficiaries to protect your family’s future.

60-65: THE RETIREMENT COUNTDOWN—MAXIMIZE, PROTECT, AND THRIVE

Mike and Karen, both 63, have spent decades saving and planning for retirement, but as the finish line nears, anxiety creeps in. Will our savings last? When should we take Social Security? What if unexpected healthcare costs arise? They’ve watched friends struggle with financial missteps and don’t want to make the same mistakes. With retirement around the corner, now is the time to make the right choices, protect what they’ve built, and step confidently into retirement.

Q: WILL I HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO LAST?

A: Longevity is unpredictable, so plan wisely. Know your essential expenses versus flexible spending. Adjust your withdrawal rate as needed—avoid overspending early. Consider delaying Social Security for higher benefits. A well-structured income plan helps ensure your money lasts through retirement.

Q: HOW WILL I COVER HEALTHCARE COSTS?

A: Medical expenses rise with age, so plan ahead. If available, maximize your Health Savings Account (HSA). Understand Medicare options to choose the right plan for your needs. Long-term care can be costly—explore insurance or savings strategies to cover potential nursing home or home care costs. Proper planning prevents financial strain from unexpected healthcare expenses.

Q: HOW WILL I REPLACE MY PAYCHECK?

A: Transitioning from earning a paycheck to relying on savings feels daunting. Identify your income sources— Social Security, pensions, investments, or rental income. Create a withdrawal strategy that balances growth and security. Keep emergency funds accessible to avoid selling investments in downturns. Thoughtful planning ensures a steady and sustainable retirement income.

Q: WHEN SHOULD I CLAIM SOCIAL SECURITY?

A: Taking Social Security at 62 lowers your monthly benefits while delaying increases them. Consider factors like health, income needs, and spousal benefits. Calculate your breakeven point to see if waiting makes financial sense. A strategic approach helps maximize lifetime benefits while aligning with your financial goals.

CONCLUSION

Retirement isn’t just about saving—it’s about creating a secure, fulfilling future. Whether you’re building your nest egg or preparing to retire, smart financial decisions today will pay off tomorrow. With expert guidance from Larson Wealth Planners, you can approach retirement confidently, knowing you’ve taken steps to make the most of your hardearned money.

JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT! (J.A.M.)

PROM-NIGHT THEME PARK AT BHS MAKES A NIGHT TO REMEMBER!

ARTICLE BY JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK PHOTOGRAPHY BY TODD PAZOL, JANEEN JOY, AND CRISTY BUTCHER

J.A.M. Deets:

WHO: BHS Juniors and Seniors + Guests WHAT: BHS Prom 2025 J.A.M. AFTER PARTY! WHEN: April 26th, 7pm – 9pm: Community Walk-Through

April 26th, 11:45pm – April 27th, 4am: J.A.M.! WHERE: Broomfield High School Visit bhsJAM.com for more info!

For nearly 100 years, the high school prom has been a popular tradition. After-prom parties (and the consequences that come with underage shenanigans) have been around just as long.

Enter: The J.A.M. squad! This is a dedicated crew of parents and community volunteers who throw one heck of an afterprom bash at Broomfield High School (BHS). The party has been a BHS tradition for 34 years and counting, on-mission to give students a safe and fun place to have a blast after prom.

So what ignited this fabulous tradition of post-prom entertainment? Who better than Paul Derda, one of the founders, to give us the historical scoop!

“J.A.M.’s real heart and soul are the parents, high school staff, and community members wanting a healthy and safe environment for the students after prom!” says Derda. And, in typical “Derd fashion,” he carried on with enthusiastic exuberance, saying, “I was privileged to work J.A.M. for 25 years, and I’m not sure who had more fun, the workers or the kids!”

Each year, roughly 400 volunteers set aside time, talent, and treasure to bring J.A.M. to fruition.

So what happens at J.A.M.? While the yearly themes are kept under wraps, think AMUSEMENT PARK. They bring in giant inflatables, arcade games, music, plenty of food, and exciting prizes that students rave about. Erika Pazol, J.A.M. Co-Chairperson, shared this fun story:

“I was at one of our fundraising events in Boulder. A woman approached me, seeing that we were with J.A.M., saying, ‘Other than my wedding, J.A.M. has been the most memorable event of my whole life!’”

Volunteers work hard to bring months of planning and brainstorming to reality. They rely heavily on donations, including supplies, construction materials, and money to pull it all together. And it's well worth the effort.

“I was privileged to work J.A.M. for 25 years, and I’m not sure who had more fun, the workers or the kids!”

Here’s what Annabelle Gallegos, a 2017 BHS grad and J.A.M. volunteer, had to share: “I love being able to contribute to the memories the kids will have forever while learning new skills and building community. It's really special to see how the whole town pitches in. I just feel more connected to Broomfield volunteering with J.A.M.!

Thanks to J.A.M., the BHS prom night is a night to remember!
