Hello, BuckHaven. I
n sixth grade, I came home one day to find blue shag carpet newly installed in my bedroom. Down the hall, my little sister was rolling around on her new multishade pink shag flooring. Ah, that smell. We were rich, I thought! Mom added a blue patchwork quilt (procured from a fund raising auction at the preschool where she taught), arranged a collage of fish-shaped baskets on my wall, moved a sweet little desk and chair into my room and, voila, the redecoration was complete. Those wicker fish inspired us, launching my fish collection: boxes, penPhoto by Samantha Shal dants, paper weights, tapestries and more. I was a swimmer (though not a Pisces) and had a book about Jacques Cousteau and often dreamed at a young age that I could breathe under water. I loved fish and perhaps my mom picked up on this, instilling a new tradition and teaching me to nest by starting a collection for me. She was thoughtful like that. Our feature on page xx brings you the story of collection curator Cathy Smith-Bresciani. Her gorgeous Habersham Road home is alive with her beloved Steiff animal collection and artfully displayed vintage findings. Photographer Fredrik Brauer captured the many layers and careful design of each room. What makes your home special? Do you have a collection? Share it on our Facebook page, where you’ll find dates and details of holiday gift fairs, shopping opportunities, giving opportunities and community news. o you ever wonder where beautiful furniture goes when it’s outlived its welcome? It’s probably at Swoox Curated Consignment in Buckhead, where gently used designer furniture comes to find a second life, and for buyers it’s a high-end treasure hunt where the merchandise changes almost daily. “We’re the perfect platform for people who live in all these large beautiful homes who are downsizing to condos or for estate sales,” says Jenn Balcos, curator and interior designer. “And sometimes, no matter how fantastic a designer is, a piece of furniture or an accessory just doesn’t work. There are storage units around town full of merchandise that was rejected that’s just collecting dust. We’ve BEFORE been saviors to people in a lot of different scenarios.” Swoox is very selective in what it accepts. “We get a lot of lovely furnishings including vintage, rugs from Morocco, lighting, jewelry, art. We’re lucky in that we can hand-pick what we accept. We tend to look at texture first, not a lot of color. You’ll find your month a lot of black, white and gray in here. But whatever wefirst accept, is of service or very high-end,” says Balcos. Owner Kelly Anthony says the concept cameany from her expe-design landscape and installation rience in the interior design business. “In interior design, you always have clients downsizing, moving, redesigning, changing styles and the question is always, ‘what do I do with the old things’? We thought about a high-end store that other people can come in and reinvent the pieces in a boutique setting. It was one of those ‘aha’ moments.” Landscape Design Group The store presents the pieces in creative ways that ignite a buyer’s imagination. “We try to re-interpret a piece and mingle old with new. We have some pieces that were in designer’s showrooms and are no longer in the line. We get furniture that has been in houses for years, but we pride ourselves in showing people how they can blend these pieces with what they have at home and be design • maintenance • installation very happy,” Anthony says. The shop has only been open less than a year and already the entrepreneurs are thinking about expanding. “It’s been crazy. Every single day someone drops something fabulous off,” says Balcos. “There’s never a dull moment because people want beautiful things at great prices.” If a piece is accepted, the store splits the sale 50-50 although sometimes they will trade for a piece if the buyer sees something he or she wants. Usually people take pictures of their pieces and show them to either Anthony or Balcos before bringing them into the store. “It’s a new world. We see pictures of potential pieces that are emailed, or on Facebook or Instagram to us and a lot of people buy the same way,” Balcos says. “It just makes everything quicker and easier.” In addition to previously owned furniture, rugs and accessories, Swoox offers several jewelry lines, such as by Roen and Meaghan Torbert McCord, as well as art especially commis* For all qualified projects offer expires 11/30/2015 sioned for Swoox. “We want to support local artists and some of them are really making a name for themselves,” says Balcos. 452-9475 • www.BuckheadTurfCare.com Swoox is located at 56 East Andrews Dr.

oday’s modern couple has curated the perfect home. Here in Buckhead and Brookhaven homes, you’ll find impeccable design: the chairs might be Brunschwig & Fils, the rug hand-picked from Moattar, and oh--that heavenly sideboard--it has to be a Baker original. Homes today are far from ho-hum, which is exactly why Lindsey Viscomi was stumped in 2013 when she went to decorate her first nursery. Nurseries, she felt, should complement the décor in a home. Artwork ought to be original and certainly pleasing (given she was about to spend A LOT of time in the room). Viscomi, who lives in Druid Hills notes, “People spend so much time creating a beautiful home but the nursery is often in conflict with the vibe of the rest of the home. Your nursery should be as unique as your little one.” Inspiration was born and SweetGemma.com soon followed, an online retail website that takes the guesswork out of finding stylish art for nurseries and children’s rooms. “When I went to create my first nursery, I found there was a lot of artwork out there but I had to do quite a bit of digging to find it,” Viscomi says. “I wanted to streamline the process for parents, procuring original artwork with a modern esthetic and fresh, clean lines.” And procure, she did! Viscomi licenses art from artists all over the country and offers work from 75 artists (both canvases and prints) on her site. Artists featured on the site include Mary Campbell, Kate Moore, Colin Walsh and more. Sweet Gemma’s current line (two babies and two homes later) continues to grow steadily. One of the site’s most popular features is a nursery inspiration board/blog that discusses food and fodder for new parents--along with, of course, décor ideas.

"Sweet Gemma made it so easy for me to find artwork that complemented my son's nursery," says Victoria Davis of Buckhead. “As a mother of two young children, I didn't have the time to hunt for art; with Sweet Gemma there's such a great selection all in one place. I quickly found a print with a wonderful phrase that represented our family -- 'Let's Laugh and Be Silly' -- and it looks fabulous in my son's room." Perusing the website I ponder a “Little Woodsman” theme-complete with cavern home tapestry, flannel throw pillows and artwork featuring woodland creatures. It’s perfect for a cabin or mountain home-one I envision is nestled in Big Canoe. While not my personal style, I admire that the décor is not run of the mill and proceed to check out additional artwork offered on the site. I’m immediately drawn to a canvas by Mary Campbell (a graduate of The Portfolio Center in Atlanta) titled “Alive.” The colors are soothing and the artwork could easily be hung anywhere in the home (not just a nursery). It IS my style and I deduce that there’s something for everyone here. Many of the pieces could easily evolve with the changing of the child’s roomsomething customers will find an added benefit to their purchase. On the subject of evolution, one thing Viscomi’s creation refuses to do is stay stagnant. Like her children (Sweet Gemma is aptly named after her first child, Gemma), the business continues to grow. Future plans include rolling out wall decals (which enable parents to change the look of a room easily) along with adding more artists to their current collection. The retail site will also partner with local interior designer Laura Brown on a monthly basis by creating an inspiration board that debuts a themed room and provides ideas and products to help readers recreate the design. Prospective parents will find SweetGemma.com a delightful destination. Finding the inspiration to design a nursery is hard enough but as Viscomi explains, “You shouldn’t have to search countless shops and websites or spend a fortune to design a room you love.” Bleary-eyed parents of newborns will will note one further benefit when their nursery is complete; As Viscomi chimes in “When you’re in your nursery at 2 a.m., you’ll be glad you love the room!” For more information visit SweetGemma.com. tanding guard along Buckhead’s winding, wooded and wonderful Habersham Road is Cathleen Smith Bresciani and Buddy Bresciani’s stately neoclassic home where hundreds, no thousands of collectibles are happily harbored and often honored. Cathleen, a former model turned author, socialite and philanthropist has carefully curated her charming and extensive collections and now displays her true loves throughout their beautiful home. “I like things that make me smile and feel good,” says Cathleen, gorgeous with perfect skin, bright eyes and a honed sense of style. She points out a small painting in the corner of the library bursting with a dozen vignettes featuring African-American folk art, sailor’s valentines, letter openers, candy boxes, dolls and books. “That is the first piece I bought, back in 1986 when I lived in New Orleans, a sweet painting of a mother putting her dear little children to bed. It inspired me to collect the black dolls by Eleanor Todd. They are just full of personality.” Many of her pieces are signed originals and some date back to the 1880s. Each has a special place in her heart and home. “I am constantly walking through rooms, editing as I go,” says Cathleen as she floats like a fairy godmother between the formal and family rooms of the home where she and Buddy have lived for eight years. At the heart of her collections, and perhaps the center of her life now, are the vintage toy animals and Steiff collectibles that continue to inspire her storytelling. Cathleen’s premiere children’s book features the bespeckled protagonist puppy, Miss Sassafrass Jones and the tiny animals dressed to the nines as characters in the adorable Habersham Forest. (Her friend, B-52s front man Fred Schneider narrates the tale on an audio edition of the book.) Her second book is a collaboration with Rebekah Kaufman, a third-generation and lifelong Steiff enthusiast. “Sassafrass Jones and her Forever Friends ABCs” launches next month in Manhattan in what will surely be a fabulous flourish. Miss Sassafrass and her friends are (of course) displayed in Cathleen’s home studio where she and set designer Christopher McClellan dressed, accessorized and posed the A to Z Steiff collectibles. The studio adjoins her office, also full of some of her favorite things - vintage stuffed animals, mid-century flea market finds and an extensive caboodle of novelty wicker figural purses. Monkeys with parasols, parading elephants and bears with bowlers sit atop a mirrored mid-century credenza, ready to inspire (or carry a lipstick and comb). Cathleen finds her gems online (1stDibs.com is a favorite), at the Interiors Market on Bennett Street, Scott Antique Market, Decades Antique and Vintage and Chamblee’s Antique Factory. “And, when I travel I find things, like kooky mid-century pieces in California and amazing finds in New York flea markets,” Cathleen shares. But, good luck catching up with her. She has been carefully collection for more than 35 years to choreograph her pieces. “Everyone here has a friend,” gesturing in Vanna-like grandeur at her animals and figurines. “And, they all make me laugh.”
While Cathy collects and publishes, her passion is really about raising funds and awareness of needs close to her heart. She was a nurse and was inspired by her late friend Tommy Lasorda Jr. to start a trust in his memory. A portion of the proceeds of her books go to Canine Companions. Canine Companions for Independence provides highly trained assistance dogs to children and adults with disabilities. Established in 1975, Canine Companions has six training centers across the country and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. There is no charge for the dog, its training and ongoing follow-up services. For more information, call 1.800.572.BARK or visit CCI.org.

this reason many guests find themselves sleeping in hotel rooms and opting out of stays at the parents or in-laws. Availability to remote-access is no longer an option. It’s a necessity,” says Nandina Co-founder and Designer John Ishmael. “It’s equally important to view guest dwelling quarters as multifaceted spaces that can easily shift from an office-on-the-go to a personal sanctuary. Just think about the level or relaxation and comfort you’d expect if you were to travel out of town.” The design team suggests simply adding a throw, textured pillows, or a large functional lamp to help create a dynamic environment for your guest – especially if you’re working with a small space. Include a welcome card on the bedside table or guest room workspace that includes the home’s Wi-Fi network name and password, simple instructions to the TV remote as well as any scheduled dinners or activities. Keeping things simple but comfortEnd table/ able is a theme. “ Within each depull-out desk by Noir sign genre, we’ve begun to see a Trading; pull-out sofa by trend of clients wanting less. Think high thread count and hospital corners. Also, equip guests with the basic necessities like soft bath towels, fragrant soaps, a coffee maker, a few bottles of water and plenty of toilet tissue. These are the details you don’t want to overlook when your guests arrive.” Be sure to stop in to say hello to the pros at Nandina when you are in Inman Park! NandinaHome.com

ure, there are minivans, crossovers and SUVs that provide ample transportation, but with some excursions, getting there should be just as fun... and luxurious and comfortable. From the hassle of finding and paying for a place to stay that suits your lifestyle, to simply missing the aesthetics a home provides, sometimes hotels just won't do. Well thanks to the adventurous traveler, lawyer and founder Wally Byam, Airstream’s luxurious trailers and travel coaches have become as traditionally American as apple pie since 1931. His dream was simple, according the Jackson Center, Ohio-based company: “To build a travel trailer that would move like a stream of air, be light enough to be towed by a car, and create first-class accommodations anywhere.” Airstream’s compact Sport model starts at $48,383, accommodating up to four people with amenities including a roomy bathroom with a shower, LED interior lights, and a kitchen complete with stainless appliances (microwave, refrigerator, and range), all towable by a SUV. Other models depending on size and features include the Flying Cloud, International, Eddie Bauer, Classic and the lavish Land Yacht. The latter begins at $146,362, and provides

up to six passengers the luxuries of Italian Riva yacht designer, Mauro Micheli. Mollie Hansen, vice president of marketing for Airstream says, “One of the best reasons to own an Airstream travel trailer is the combination of the iconic aluminum vintage-like exterior, combined with the contemporary and modern interior. We know how to blend the best of both worlds. Airstream is no different than new homes or cars. We are keen to the demands of our tech-savvy consumers so we are continually upgrading our connectivity and AV systems. High-end customers expect us to offer the best, and that is exactly what we do.” Partnering with brands including Mercedes Benz, Kohler, and Eddie Bauer, Airstream has wowed celebrities Tom Hanks, NASCAR driving legend Dale Earnhardt Jr, and country music superstar Eric Church who wouldn't be caught on the road without their Airstream. Airstream continues to burgeon and dominate the industry. For more information including towing capacities, dealers, pricing and other inquiries, visit Airstream.com.

WORDS KENDRA MATHEWSON
Birds on a Wire
Parting Thoughts
O
ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a telephone wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals together, playing cards as couples, we’d pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her Mini Cooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness. words, stories, shared experiences and common interests, we find inspiration to create our communities. My friend’s keen observations became the main theme of a series that has become her signature. The beauty of her Birds on a Wire series, and her reflections on community, have inspired me to embrace and celebrate more the important place it has in our lives. We live in such an individualistic society that our personal empowerment sometimes overshadows the significance of our need for each other. Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Because the people are who ignite an idea, imagine a future, share an event, take the bull by the horns, see a need and fill it, spread the word about a new business, open their home to new families, bring a meal when there’s an illness, invest in a neighbor or believe in a student, give witness to struggles and celebrate successes. Our magazine is your “wire.” Let us pause to read the stories that have been inspired by our community, to drink in the beautiful photographs that paint the story of us. Email your editor and publisher, or better yet reach out and enjoy a cup of coffee together. Let us stop here in the pages of our publication each month and celebrate like birds on a wire, before we fly off back to our busy lives. You inspire us.
