Lifestyle Letter

Hello, BuckHaven T

he perks of this job are numerous. Last month, I travelled to Jacksonville, FL with a pack of regional and national journalists and we surfed, golfed, paddled, kayaked, made candy, toured a century-old underground bank vault, and sipped and savored the flavors of a city building itself up around a fine riverfront and nearby welcoming coastline. The enthusiasm and energy of the Visit Jacksonville team was contagious and by the end of the trip, I vowed to return (and to write about why YOU should visit...stay tuned for a story later this summer). Editors are conPhotography stantly bombarded with product samples, invitations to openings Scott Areman and receptions and story pitches. I meet some intruiging characters and learn, first-hand, why people are passionate about their job, their family, their philanthropy. I find myself in high rise offices with leaders of industry and in kitchens with families celebrating milestones. Everyone has a story. I love my job. This month, I'm thrilled to introduce you to the creative and talented chef, Todd Dae Kulper at Doraku Buckhead. But, I'm admittedly more thrilled to have met his daughter (sorry Chef). Little Alexandra charmed us all during the shoot, reminding us to please leave our shoes in the foyer and offering to show us her daddy's bedroom closet where he keeps his white chefs coats. She and her dad made their go-to treat for houseguests, fresh squeezed lemonade. I thought is was fitting, since the busy chef does seem to squeeze love from every precious moment with his young daughter. That's a lesson we all need to be reminded of. This month, I hope you will take the lemons in your life and make lemonade, pouring a glass for the father in your life you love. I lost my dad 16 years ago to lung cancer (which is one reason I was thrilled Lifestyle Publications sponsored the American Cancer Society's recent Hope Ball). And, this month, our three kids will honor their dad, my husband of 28 years. Happy Father's Day, BuckHaven dads!

Funny Business PAUL OLLINGER SHARES ADVICE IN FIRST BOOK

ARTICLE ROBIN AUSTIN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

T

he time to realize you want to be a comedian is probably not after taking out loans to pay for business school. But that’s how it happened for Brookhaven resident Paul Ollinger, who shares his experience in his first book, You Should Totally Get an MBA: A Comedian’s Guide to Top U.S. Business Schools. “It’s kind of a letter to my 25-year-old self saying, if I were in your shoes today, here’s how I would look at the opportunity,” says Paul, now 47. “I call it a funny motivational book.” Paul, who grew up in Dunwoody and went to St. Pius X high school, developed his comedy skills while at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business. He told jokes in front of his classmates, wrote for the school paper and hosted the talent show. After putting his business degree to good use at Launch.com and Yahoo!, Paul spent two years performing standup full time in Los Angeles, opening for top comedians. The reality of getting married and wanting to start a family brought Paul back into the tech world. He took a job at Facebook, one of the first 250 employees, and eventually ran the west coast sales team. Five years 18

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2016

ago Paul was asked to move to the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto. Instead he decided it was time to come home to Atlanta. “My wife and I had talked a lot about where we wanted to raise our children and the opportunity to move back and be closer to my family was a great one.” Since settling in Brookhaven, Paul has focused on writing while also advising tech startups and performing standup -- Paul credits his wife Stacey and their son and daughter for much of his standup material. This past February Paul emceed the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hope and Will Ball, an event Stacey co-chaired in 2015. Paul is also an active donor with Year Up Atlanta, an organization that provides intensive job training programs to low-income young adults. In his book, Paul brings a comedic perspective to mentoring future generations of business leaders while also offering serious advice. “The more I wrote, the more I rediscovered how much business school had done for me,” says Paul. “Despite the current fashion of saying you shouldn’t waste your time getting an MBA, if the person is of the right

mindset, it could do absolutely wonders for their career just as it did for mine.” Paul’s unique take on the important things to consider when applying to business schools includes ranking them based on their proximity to a Cinnabon. It’s not just to give a sense of how easily you can put on the business school equivalent of the “Freshman 15;” this ranking demonstrates how near or far campuses are to major cities. “The last chapter is called Nobody Cares About Your MBA, just to put the whole thing in perspective,” says Paul. “The book is tongue in cheek but it’s also sincere.” Paul is already thinking ahead to his second book, which he says will be on lessons he has learned since leaving Facebook and the myth of early retirement. You can see him performing standup at the Laughing Skull Lounge’s Best of Atlanta Showcase. “I want to write, I want to create and I want to make people enjoy their jobs better through helping them see the humor in it.” You Should Totally Get an MBA: A Comedian’s Guide to Top U.S. Business Schools is available on Amazon in paperback and as an e-book. It can also be purchased on Paul’s website, PaulOllinger.com.

The mission of ARMHC is to nurture the health and wellbeing of children and families. “My brother and my mother stayed in the Ronald McDonald House in Boston years ago. My other family members and I were at home far away in Florida,” Kathy says. “When you are going through a trying

THE STEVENS HOME (PICTURED ON PAGE 20)

The Stevens’ home was designed by TS Adams, built by Canonbury Homes and decorated by Meridy King Interiors. The kitchen and dining room areas were built with functionality and entertainment in mind as they feature a double island in the kitchen, an open foyer that opens up the dining room, and a spacious kitchen design that is inviting to guests that tend to congregate there during social events. THE STRICKLAND HOME

The Strickland home was designed by Frank Neely of Neely Design Associates, built by Neil Johnson of Canonbury Homes, with interior design by Elizabeth Fowler Smith Interiors and cabinetry features work by Cameron Thurman and Phoenix Millworks. The residents have been patrons of the Brookhaven Dines In events, yet this year is their inaugural hosting experience of a Dines In dinner party. “The Ronald McDonald House is such a fantastic place. I can only imagine having a child in the hospital and being in a strange city - what the House means to those families is beyond words,” Katherine Strickland says. “I am proud to support such a facility and to host a dinner and know that everything from the chef ’s time, to my guests donation to attend and the donated food we are enjoying are all raising money for such a great mission is heartwarming.” When designing the home, the family wanted a space that was ideal for entertaining guests of all ages with ample play, dining and storage space. The Strickland’s favorite feature of their dining area is the butler’s pantry which makes the space ideal for serving guests. 22

THE EDEN HOME

The Eden’s home was designed by a group of local architects and the result was the collaborative effort between Neil Johnson of Canonbury Homes and Meridy King, the interior designer. Their kitchen and dining areas feature design elements that incorporate simple, clean lines and showcase the oversized, wooden island as the focal point. The Eden’s love to fill their home with family and friends. “We strongly believe in supporting Brookhaven Dines In as we have seen firsthand the level of commitment and dedication put forth by this dynamic group,” Terri Eden says. “The Brookhaven Dines In events provide for a greater sense of community while supporting one of our community’s most treasured assets.” Whether you are a homeowner hoping to get involved, or a local chef hoping to donate your time and talents, write caroline.tate@armhc.org , call 678.704.8099. or visit ARMCH.org.

wanky Asian-fusion restaurant Doraku Sushi has an often overlooked feature: its chef is also a dad. The culinary genius behind Doraku is Chef Todd Dae Kulper.

Like many chefs in the industry, he works grueling days with long hours that can extend into the wee hours of the morning. He wears many different hats, though, and outside of work is the father to his 5-year-old daughter, Alexandra.

SQUEEZING JOY

(CON TI N U ED)

Born in Korea, Kulper was adopted by an American family and grew up on a dairy farm in Iowa, with family values instilled in him at an early age. He’s been with Doraku for eight years and bounced around exotic locales like Ho Chi Minh City and Miami opening new locations. The Atlanta outpost of Doraku opened about a year ago and he and his family already know they want to “plant a flag here.” A big part of that decision is the want of a permanent home for Alexandra. With such long days it can be hard to find a compromise between work and family life. So does Kulper do it? Well, it’s not always easy. His wife is supportive of his intense chef-life, but Alexandra doesn’t always understand why “Daddy isn’t always there.” Squeezing joy out of every second they spend together is imperative, and no activity is too mundane to share a special moment. What does help is having a flexible daytime schedule, giving him the chance to make the most of their precious father daughter time. “For chefs we have a recovery day, and she always wants to play. So when we do things together we like to do really fun things,” he explained. This could mean heading to Six Flags, or visiting the Center for Puppetry Arts where they have annual passes. While resting up would be nice on his days off, he simply can’t resist opportunities to spend time with his daughter. Chef Todd breaks the barriers of work and home life by sharing in their mutual love of food. One of their favorite father daughter activities is cooking at home, or going out to eat and trying new foods. They love to explore the culinary gems along Buford Highway. Alexandra particularly enjoys the Vietnamese restaurants because, Kulper says, “She loves anything with noodles.” Another way he sneaks time in with his daughter are her visits to Doraku when he’s working. When asked if she likes to visit Doraku, Kulper cracks a smile and says, “She loves it. She comes in and she knows everyone, all the 28

servers, bartenders, managers. Everyone loves her.” Like most regulars in their favorite locales she has a usual: the grilled salmon (plain, no sauce), a cucumber roll, miso soup with extra tofu and a side of rice. Simple, but delicious. Practically growing up in a restaurant did have an unintended side effect, though. “She became so comfortable with restaurants she started acting up and thought she owned the place,” an amused Kulper explains. This meant visiting a restaurant and bossing the servers around or trying to entertain patrons at the other tables. Kulper and his wife quickly nipped that behavior in the bud, though, and now she is a more refined, well-mannered diner.

Being a chef and a father isn’t easy thanks to the intense hours in a kitchen. Spending so much time away from his daughter, though, allows Kulper to treasure the moments they are together. Finding the balance between his intense work life and the needs of his daughter allows him to successfully be a chef dad. June 2016 | BuckHavenLifestyle.com

Giving Back

For Sick Children, Max Brings Hope with Game Givers ARTICLE ALEXA LAMPASONA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

M

ax Rubenstein, 16, is a sophomore at The Galloway School in Buckhead, but meeting him you would never know he was that young. He’s well-spoken and holds himself with the air of someone much wiser than his years. He thinks of others first before himself, and has goals to work in social entrepreneurship after college. He started young. In 2008 when Max was just eight, he started a volunteer program to donate school uniforms to children in Malawi, Africa. Now, he’s fueling his passion for video games to create his own charity, Game Givers, that focuses on bringing video games and consoles to hospital-bound children around Atlanta. Max was one of 20 Georgia students selected by the non-profit Giving Point to create a charity and launched Game Givers in August 2015. As an avid lover of video games, Max wanted to do something with one of his favorite hobbies. He was inspired by his grandmother, who died of Ovarian Cancer and was also a fan of video games. Max decided to help kids, because they were close to his age. He knew that long term hospitalization would make kids miss the new video games that were being released, so he aimed to bring kids the games that were on their wish list. Once Max’s social action project launched, he immediately started working with volunteer representatives at Children’s Healthcare Scottish Rite by furnishing the

36

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | June 2016

gaming section in The Zone, a recreation area for patients at the hospital. From there, he found other ways to fundraise video games and money for Game Givers. “I knew if I was in these kids’ situations, I would want someone to do the same for me,” says Max. “I may not be able to find the cure to these kid’s illnesses, but hopefully I can make it a little bit brighter.” At his young age, Max is constantly networking to find additional organizations to partner with Game Givers. He has exceeded the average volunteer hours required to host a charity through Giving Point, and as of March 2016 has put in more than 230 hours; much of it after school hours and on weekends. According to Max, Game Givers currently has a backlog of over 100 games to be donated, which is not a bad problem to have. Max visits many hospitals in the area to drop off games a few times a month, in addition to working after school hours and weekends. The charity is solely his work, with some help from his mom Ali. “I’ve always been a business-minded person, but I wanted to use those skills to help others,” says Max. “I’m still surprised that every person I’ve talked to about getting involved in Game Givers has been so willing to help.” Game Giver's original fundraising goal was $2,000, and now the charity has raised more than $7,000. Currently the charity has partnerships with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

and its various campuses, Grady Memorial Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network and Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses. “We have no plan to stop anytime soon,” says Rubenstein. “We are growing very fast and have launched a new partnership with Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Augusta. I hope to expand to other hospitals around the country throughout 2016.” The best way for the public to support Game Givers is by donating games or consoles, as well as monetary donations, which can be made through GameGivers.org. Max hopes to work with more communities and schools this year to host a donation drive or gaming tournament to raise funds. Max has won several awards, including Atlanta Intown’s “20 Under 20,” Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “20 Under 20,” and he is a member of 21st Century Leaders. It’s easy to see Max is a go-getter. “I saw an opportunity and a need, and I acted on it.” He hopes that he will be an example to other high school students and that more will consider creating some sort of charity or social action project. “I think it really doesn’t put it into perspective until other high schoolers see someone their age making an impact.” Game Givers Founder and Creator: Max Rubenstein GameGivers.org

Another standout modification is the SYNC3 touchscreen interface that is significantly easier to operate compared to the former, brain-stressing MyFord Touch infotainment system. ure, brunch and bow ties are grand, but this year, why not grab your favorite man and head outside? Father's Day shares the month of June with National Trails Day and the 85th anniversary of Georgia’s State Park System. Park rangers are saying “hike with us on Father's Day” as a way to honor our country’s largest public trail event.
