Lifestyle Letter
Hello, BuckHaven. D
o you remember that cover from our July 2012 issue? It's one of my favorites. I remember grabbing some tiny flags from my holiday stash before dashing out the door to the shoot where Chef David Berry (then at Horseradish Grill in Buckhead, now making magic in the kitchen at MadLife Grill in Woodstock) was showing us around his kitchen. This salute was one of the last shots of the day - which are usually among the best. And, four years later, we are continuing to bring you stories about your neighbors and businesses right here in Buckhead and Brookhaven. We’ve put together a July issue packed with love, for summer. Meet the team at Union Hill Polo, where our own Jenny Kepano rides as referee and is a champion for the sport. “We have the best tailgating picnicking in Atlanta and everyone is warmly welcomed to come out to watch a match or even take some lessons and join the fun,” says Jenny, who is one of Lifestyle Publications’ marketing reps. The club was founded by Dr. Eric Steenlage of Buckhead, who discovered the sport later in life and has never turned back. Have a safe and celebratory month. Keep in touch,

uth Skogstad is Brookhaven’s number one fan. She and her husband John have lived in Historic Brookhaven for 22 years. Their dog, Diego, is a well-known celebrity in their neighborhood, where Ruth walks with him regularly. She joins the cheery band of walkers, runners and bikers around Capital City Golf Course. “I’m delighted to see everyone out, kids looking for playmates and there’s always someone to say hello to!”

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2016
Ruth Skogstad and Kristen Sodemann are Brookhaven's biggest cheerleaders.
It’s for these reasons Ruth believes in Brookhaven and champions its growth. She supports the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association by serving on its board. A graduate of Rivers, Northside High School and UGA, she is a member of the Capital City Club and the Planters Garden Club and supports CHOA with the Brookhaven Friends Group. This year, she celebrates her 50th anniversary as a realtor in the Buckhead and Brookhaven community with the Skogstad-Sodemann Team and Beacham & Co., Realtors. Ruth and her team have renewed their long-standing support as the Presenting Sponsors for Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities Historic Brookhaven Dines In Series coming up this September. She has been an avid supporter of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC) for the past 20 years. “My personal home and garden were featured on the Charities’ first Historic Brookhaven Home Tour which had maybe 50 people in attendance. Through the years, I have formed many friendships with the staff and volunteers in the neighborhood who have helped to grow this wonderful neighborhood event that supports Atlanta’s two Houses and now has upwards of 500 participants." Since 1979, ARMHC has been a “home away from home” to more than 46,000 families with ill and injured children receiving medical care nearby. The House near Egleston and the new 31-bedroom House near Scottish Rite are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. Beth Howell is the President & CEO of ARMHC and says that they believe when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed. Beth and the Historic Brookhaven Dines In Series Committee are thrilled to have the Skogstad-Sodemann Team on board for this year’s event. Brookhaven Dines In is a series of exclusive dinner parties hosted in some of Historic Brookhaven’s most beautiful homes. Dinner is prepared by Atlanta-based chefs and homeowners invite friends to join them for an intimate dining experience. Ruth and her business partner, daughter Kristen Sodemann, say they have enjoyed great success over the years, and owe a great deal of their success to the community that has been so supportive of their business. “We always love selling homes in The Brookhaven area, since that is where we live, play and work,” says Kristen, who lives in Brookhaven with her husband Chris Sodemann and their three children, who attend Woodward Academy and Trinity School. She is an alum of Holy Innocents and Riverview High School and is also a member of Brookhaven Friends Group supporting CHOA, and contributes to Northside Youth Organization and of course, ARMHC. She plays tennis with ALTA and is a member of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. “We are all honored to be a part of this wonderful charity that benefits so many families while their children are being treated at one of our great hospitals.” says Ruth. “And, as an Atlanta native, I can tell you that Historic Brookhaven is the one of the best neighborhoods in the city.” You’ll see Ruth and Kristen’s team’s handiwork on July 4. They place flags at 1,000 homes to celebrate Independence Day in their neighborhood.

SOPE CREEK TRAIL
The Sope Creek Trails are the closest mountain biking trails to the city and once you climb up into the woods, you’ve escaped into a dense tree canopy that hides fun and flowing singletrack. These trails cater to beginner and intermediate mountain bikers and make a figure-eight loop totaling about seven miles. The trails feature a few switchbacks and rollers that are easy to navigate, but require a solid level of fitness as the trails traverse the sloping valley forest to the Chattahoochee River. Sope Creek features an upper and lower loop; for heart-pumping climbs, start at the Paper Mill trailhead and ride counter-clockwise on the upper loop. You’ll catch views of the ravine and Sope Creek’s rapids along the ridgeline. For rolling hills, tackle the lower loop, where Sope Creek Trails connect to Cochran Shoals and its flat 3-mile gravel loop that parallels the Chattahoochee River. As a part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, there is a $3 parking fee. 3760 Paper Mill Road SE, Marietta

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | July 2016
The founder of the Union Hill Polo Club had never been on a horse when he began playing polo. Dr. Eric Steenlage grew up on a farm in Wisconsin where his family raised Black Angus cattle, but he had no experience around horses. After graduating college and med school, he moved to Atlanta and attended his first polo match at an Ivy League alumni social event. The sport interested him immediately. Steenlage, an orthopedic surgeon in Buckhead, founded Union Hill Polo Club in 2010. For its size, Atlanta has relatively few polo clubs: five in total. There wasn’t a club that combined both the faster games and the fun social environment that is associated with polo. Steenlage, who had since become an avid polo player and enjoyed watching the sport, created the club to fill the gap in Atlanta’s polo scene. “The speed, physicality and adrenaline rush that are all a part of polo appealed to me,” says Steenlage. “I tend to go a little above and beyond with most things I get into, and polo proved no exception. As I started playing more and became better, I started exploring the possibility of starting a new club.” After a long search through the rolling hills of Metro Atlanta, Steenlage found and purchased 26 acres of land in Canton. Despite a few setbacks and lessons in irrigation, fertilization, aeration, weed control and mowing, Steenlage, his brother Keith, and his sister Ella built the Union Hill Polo Club. Since its beginnings, Union Hill Polo Club’s team has evolved to 15 active members. The spring and summer season has games on Sundays at 2 p.m. Visitors are invited to spectate, pack a picnic and tailgate before the game. With free admission, polo could become the new weekend afternoon tradition. At Union Hill Polo Club, crowds are a diverse mix of families, couples, polo fans and newbies to the sport. The parking lot turns into a tailgating party, where spectators pull out all the stops, including grills smoking with burgers and chicken, spreads of appetizers, CONTINUED > and coolers of beer and wine.

“We challenge that we’re more fun than any other tailgate in the city,” says Jenny Kepano, marketing and events coordinator for the club. The sport of polo has been called a hybrid of the rigor of hockey, the precision of golf, and the speed of horse racing. In reality, polo is an intense sport marked with speed, agility and athletic prowess from both man and horse. The action on the field is exciting to watch and rivals any other spectator sport. Polo first came to the United States in 1876 from England, where Persian noblemen and British aristocrats first played the sport. Polo is played on horseback with a long-handled mallet and a wooden ball. Two teams of four players compete during two hours in chukkers, six timed periods. The field itself is the largest of any organized sport, at 300 yards long and 160 yards wide. Union Hill Polo Club encourages anyone with an interest to learn the game. All levels are welcome, even if you’ve never played polo or ridden a horse. Private and group lessons are available and range from 30 minutes to a full day. Beyond the matches, Union Hill Polo Club rents out their facilities for corporate events, parties and bocce ball games, perfect for an outdoor event. And of course, any event rental includes a polo game. Union Hill Polo Club, 430 Roper Road, Canton, GA 30115 JennyKepano@Comcast.net 770.712.5541

or many people, making the bed is a chore. And if we’re being honest, it’s at the bottom of the chore food chain, reserved for the last 5 minutes before flying out the door. For others, making the bed is a reoccurring line item on a New Year’s resolution checklist that quickly catches dust. And, on a sunny summer morning full of promise and pool-time, who cares? However, it seems those walking among us who not only take the time out of their schedules to complete this task, but also enjoy it, benefit from lofty personality accolades including being happier, having a greater sense of self, and even being generally more 26

successful than their unmade bed counterparts. With all of this at stake, can we afford to neglect our beds? I think not! The perfect bed starts with the perfect mattress. Neglecting your mattress is like offering your mother-in-law a mint julep (WIN)…in anything BUT a metal vessel (FAIL). You’ll suffer long for not getting this critical sleep ingredient right the first time. I recommend heading to The Dump or to Natural Mattress in Buckhead. Do yourself the favor of making an investment in a high quality mattress. I salute you and your fantastic choices, BuckHaven reader!

LINENS:
Invest in the best linens you can comfortably afford – and don’t go at it alone. You need to talk to an expert. I’m not suggesting you bring Andrea your bank statement, but if you give her a budget she can work with you. You will be amazed at the linen art directing that can be achieved with a limited budget. DUVETS:
Have some duvet decorating fun by styling these versatile pieces in different ways to achieve very different looks. Andrea suggests making your bed with the duvet cover pulled styled in one of three ways: all the way to the headboard, folded halfway to expose beautiful sheets with interesting designs, or folding it in thirds at the foot of your bed so it can be pulled up easily at night. Remember, down catches air. So fluff the daylights out of that duvet! PILLOWS:
We all have the license to get a little wild and crazy with decorative pillows. This is one of the best opportunities to introduce pattern, the latest trends and custom, one-of-a-kind elements in the bed-making process. QUILTS:
Let’s build upon our mattress, shall we? We asked Andrea Owens, a Gramercy linen expert, and a key member of the team at Gramercy Fine Linens, for her top tips on how the make the perfect warm weather bed without stealing too much time from our summer morning routine. We all know cutting into our coffee time is a sin. It’s simply not done. FUNCTION AND FASHION:
Andrea believes the best bed beds are born from the layering of beautiful, and comfortable, textural elements. Some designed for function, some designed for fashion, but all designed to be the statement piece in the room.
Quilts, both light and heavy, add opulence to the bedding design. In warm climates like Georgia, these can take the place of heavier duvets. However, in the South, goodness knows we tend to err on the side of layers and frill, so many times you will see a quilt stacked on a duvet or draped across the edge of the bed – even when it’s 80 degrees. Bless our collective hearts. REDUCE WRINKLES:
Forget spot ironing - grab the spray bottle! A simple misting and the rogue wrinkles will disappear as the garment dries. Fragranced waters are also great as they add a nice aroma to the bed between washing. If the good Lord didn’t give you the tidy gene, these tips should help you bend nature to your will…at least when it comes to your summer bedroom. July 2016 | BuckHavenLifestyle.com

rowing up, we belonged to a family swim club a few miles down a country road from our suburban Michigan home. To get there, I’d have to wait for my dad to get home from work (he swam slow and methodical laps during adult swim) or do more than my required list of chores to earn my mom’s attention for a mid-day swim. Or, I could ride my baby blue Schwinn the mile and a half down the dirt road, wrapping a beach towel around my face like a shemagh for protection against the dry dust kicked up CONTINUED > by passing cars. 28

I dreamed of having our own back yard pool. I probably even suggested the addition. I most likely begged. Mark Spiezio of Atlas Pools can help. All you have to say is "I want an inground pool" and let Atlas Pools handle the rest. Mark says, pool construction goes like this: “First, we'll come to your property for an on-site assessment. This includes looking at the property plat for setbacks, utility easements and flood plains that would hinder construction of your inground pool.” Next, the team will show you our personally customized design recommendations within your price range. Once you choose the plan that suits you best, Atlas Pools will obtain all the necessary building permits (unless there is a variance issue) and get to work. Installing a pool begins with groundwork: trees and debris must be removed. Sometime a retaining wall is needed. “We can do all of this for you,” notes Mark. “There is no need to contract elsewhere.”
All pools are required by county laws to be in a fenced area, however. You may have to get with your subdivision or community regulators to see what size and height is allowable for your fence, if you don’t already have one. Then comes the magic: grading the land and installing the inground pool system of your dreams. “The final results are exciting and dramatic. You'll love your new pool!” promises Mark, who has worked hard for 35 years for continuous customer satisfaction." One example of a satisfied customer is John Howell, whose Alpharetta home now boasts a beautiful pool by Atlas. He says, "Atlas provided support before, during and especially AFTER the construction of our new pool. It was a pleasure to know customer service was their number one priority.” Close your eyes, grab a towel and enjoy dipping into the pools on these pages. Happy summer!
