Hello Buckhead and Brookhaven, S
AUGUST 2016 publisher
Jim Newman | JNewman@LifestylePubs.com
tarting school in August cheats summer. Growing up in the Midwest, we started back after Labor Day, which signaled the end of fun and the beginning of something less fun.
The pool club closed, white pants were packed away and stiff new school shoes came out of the box. For our kids here in Georgia, the early start means an early finish in spring (or that’s what this always-positive mom preaches to my kids). Still, it’s never a good time to abandon laid back days, late nights on the front porch or that feeling of freedom from the demands of the calendar. In our house, we squeeze in trips to the pool after school, eat dinner on the back patio and keep our summer playlist looping in the car. It’s all about maintaining the state-ofmind. Right…? Buckhead make-up artist to the stars (and to me!), Angela “Suni” Weilbaecher has a few suggestions for maintaining a summer glow in our Parting Thoughts. She is a successful Buckhead working mom and we wish her and her twins lots of luck in the coming school year. Sorry to talk about calendars and scheduling, but do check our calendar for fun activities to keep you smiling throughout August. I hope yours is pleasant and full of that summer feeling.

In many cases, “pets are the only living creatures victims have access to besides their abusers,” explained Ahimsa House’s program director Shannon Oxford. Abusers recognize this fact, and often use it to manipulate their victims’ emotions. According to the Ahimsa House website, batterers will threaten, harm and even kill pets in order to control or intimidate their victims. The stress can be

ill and Bobby Marsden, residents of Historic Brookhaven for 29 years, are faithful supporters of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC). “Several years ago, my nephew spent several months at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Amongst conversations, we met families utilizing the local House. They spoke about how having a place to stay close to the hospital helped relieve some of the pressures they felt as they suffered through their child’s illness or injury. It was then when we decided to begin supporting the charity,” Jill said. “The impact was substantial and we couldn’t miss the chance to get involved.” The mission of Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities is to nurture the health and well-being of children and families. Since 1979, ARMHC has been a “home away from home” to more than 46,000 families with ill and injured children receiving medical care nearby. The Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. As residents of Historic Brookhaven, the Marsdens have served for several years on the committee for the famed neighborhood fundraiser, Historic Brookhaven Dines In, benefiting the charity. Brookhaven Dines In is a series of exclusive dinner parties hosted in some of Historic Brookhaven’s most beautiful homes. Atlanta-based chefs prepare dinner and homeowners invite friends and neighbors to join them for an intimate, elegant dining experience. “The Historic Brookhaven Dines In events are a wonderful marriage of entertainment and fundraising,” Jill said. “My husband and I look forward to hosting this wonderful

dinner prepared by the creative and talented Chris Hall. Our friends will be beating down the door to attend!” The Marsdens will host a private dinner party in their beautiful Brookhaven home to benefit ARMHC this September. The dinner party will feature Local Three Chef, Chris Hall. Chris Hall is a long-standing supporter of the Dines In Series. He holds a special place in the heart of the ARMHC as a current Executive Board Member and Hearts and Hands Gala donor. His restaurant, Local Three, is known for their “real, honest food served by people who care – at a fair price in a comfortable atmosphere.” Hall will bring his culinary magic to the “Texas French” atmosphere of the Marsden’s dining areas. Their home will serve to be a comfortable, elegant setting for a delicious meal enjoyed between friends. “We absolutely love hosting friends and family in our home,” Jill said. “I especially love all that goes into preparing for an intimate dinner party like this. From the guest list and meal planning to setting the table and arranging flowers into centerpieces- it’s a special experience, in the comfort of our own home.” ARMHC is proud to have supporters and friends among the Historic Brookhaven community. To get involved with The Dines In Series, contact caroline. tate@armhc.org or visit ARMHC.org to learn more. BuckHaven Lifestyle is the proud media sponsor of the event, joining presenting sponsor, Ruth Skogstad and Beacham & Co.; builder sponsor: Canonbury Homes; luncheon sponsor Neil Morrisroe of McLain & Merritt, P.C.; and wine sponsor: Cathy Boston of Harry Norman Realtors.

e asked some of the schools in our area what notable milestones they hit last year on campus and what priority they will put on community service in the 2016-17 school year.
ATLANTA SPEECH SCHOOL Milestones: The Atlanta Speech School hired Brandi Kenner, Ph.D. as its Director of Research and Innovation. The Speech School has always had strong relationships with the nation’s leading brain development and literacy experts, and its curriculum has always been based on a synthesis of the latest cutting edge research. Dr. Kenner will help the School deepen and expand these relationships, and ensure that their teachers are best able to bring that research to the individual needs of each student. Reach Out: Third graders in the Wardlaw School (elementary school for children with dyslexia) participate in Read to Feed, a reading incentive service learning program through Heifer International which coincides with In Their Shoes Day. Students will begin their day by filling gallon milk jugs with water and then walking for a mile on campus. Lights will stay off all day, since many schools in developing countries don’t have electricity. If they get a mid-morning snack it’s porridge, and they have to strain their water through cheesecloth as if they are purifying it.
MARIST SCHOOL Milestones: The school celebrated the completion of $35 million capital campaign, “The Way. The Hope. The Promise.,” which transformed Marist’s campus for 21st century education. Reach Out: This year, for grades 9-12, Informed Civil Discourse Day will be planned in October familiaring students with a communications philosophy and method to help them have exchanges on political and other closely felt topics without resorting to accusations or epithets. Staff are committed to helping students find their voice, but a voice that is civil and informed. Also, students will be continuing Marist’s commitment to the Terra Project (sustainability). 18

Lovett Middle Schoolers served food in a soup kitchen in Arizona during their spring break service trip.
Buckhead Preparatory School Milestones: The 2015-2016 academic year marked the 10th Anniversary of Buckhead Preparatory School. To celebrate this milestone, the Buckhead Prep Foundation was established this year so that the proven, rapid-learn reading programs may be made available to even more children in the Atlanta area. Reach Out: Each year in November, Buckhead Prep hosts Project Feed to benefit families in need in Atlanta. The week before Thanksgiving, parents donate a select number of food items. The Kindergarten class then establishes a "grocery store" where the items are sorted, labeled, and displayed. Each year, our students and families' efforts serve at least 260 adults and children and provide over 6500 meals to local families in need.
The Lovett School Milestones: Last year, Lovett faculty schooled themselves on the latest research on the brain and learning. In the spring, Lovett hosted the inaugural Lovett Learning Institute: Brain Matters, a two-day conference for educators and community members interested in learning about the brain. In 2016-17, faculty is inspired to share what they know about the brain and learning with students. Fifth graders may select a one-trimester elective course on the brain. Sixth graders will have a brain and learning rotation within the Lovett Life Lessons course. Reach Out: Over 200 students tutored at Agape this year and the Lower School hosted their Agape peers for three play dates during the year. Lovett students packed meals for over 600 residents of the area served by Agape. Sixty Middle and Upper School students traveled to destinations in the United States and across the globe during spring break mission and service trips in Cuba, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. Lovett Upper School students hosted this spring’s FOCUS gala, a prom-like event where Lovett students escort a guest with developmental and CONTINUED > physical disabilities.

North Atlanta High School Milestones: The biggest change to happen at North Atlanta High School during the past year was the transition of Atlanta Public Schools (APS) to a charter school system for the 2016-2017 school year. The APS transition to a charter system will allow North Atlanta High School to have more flexibility with staffing and cluster initiatives that fit the needs of our specific community. In essence, this allows students, parents, faculty and stakeholders to have a direct hand in the governance, direction and vision of North Atlanta. Reach Out: All students in Atlanta Public Schools need 75 community service hours to graduate. As an International Baccalaureate school, our students are encouraged to pursue opportunities that are of interest to them. North Atlanta makes every effort to expose students to a variety of global, national and local issues that impact their lives. Some examples include participation in a cultural youth exchange program with Fukuoka City, Japan, national clubs and organizations that promote cultural awareness and encourage diversity and volunteering at local homeless shelters, food pantries, senior living centers and animal shelters as well as providing tutoring services for elementary and middle school students.

Sarah Smith Elementary School Milestones: Sarah Smith’s principal announced his retirement last year. SRS was able to find a highly-qualified candidate who had experience as an elementary school principal and was ready to take charge of one of APS’ most successful and dynamic schools. Dr. Michael Forehand joined the SRS community as principal January 1. He is not only well-versed in the latest elementary education standards and techniques, but also brings a joyful and positive approach to the job. He also got settled in before the school transitions to the new “Charter” operating model being implemented across APS. Each school has elected a group of representatives called the “Go Team,” tasked with making decisions about the strategic direction of the school and approving budget decisions. The principal serves as a non-voting member of this local governing body and plays an enormous role in its operation. Reach Out: As an International Baccalaureate school, Sarah Smith encourages students to be engaged global citizens who make a positive impact in their own community and in the world around them. Each grade level manages an annual project--the first grade “Candy Gram” sale is always a favorite! First graders learn valuable skills by sorting, labeling, and delivering the candy canes and messages to fellow students and all proceeds are donated to the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. Students are also invited to spend their day off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day serving their community by collecting and packaging personal care kits for the homeless. Sarah Smith also includes a service component in the annual International Travelers program, which immerses students in the history and culture of a foreign country and students raised $500 for La Amistad.
Pace Academy Middle School students participate in a cooking class during a recent study tour to Greece.
The Galloway School Milestones: The school has a new high school principal. He’s coming from Maumee Valley in Ohio where he’s been a high school principal for four years. The outgoing principal, Gordon Mathis, is transitioning to the role of head of community engagement. Reach Out: Annually, each level in the Early Learning program (preschool through 4th grade) incorporates a service project into their curriculum. For example, first graders have a unit dedicated to pets, making dog biscuits, which they take to a local animal shelter along with much-needed blankets and towels. Middle and Upper Learning students take a week out of their regular class schedules to immerse themselves in a specific field of study and this experience always includes a service component. Student athletes and their parents and coaches provide food, work assembly lines to make sandwiches for needy neighbors.
Pace Academy Milestones: Food was Pace Academy’s focus last year. Teachers incorporated food issues and study into the curriculum; experts like Joel Salatin and Pulitzer Prize-winner Martha Mendoza participated in the school’s speaker series. Also, 214 students and 41 faculty members explored the world on 16 study tours. The Pace community volunteered with organizations like the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Global Growers Network and Second Helpings Atlanta; and students got their hands dirty with food-related activities like planting, composting and aquaponics. Reach out: This summer, Upper School students travelled to Ghana and Malawi with CARE, and in March, a group will spend time in Chile as part of Pace’s sixth Habitat for Humanity International build. Pace’s student-led service program will continue to offer regular volunteer opportunities at the ACFB, AGAPE, Boys & Girls Clubs, Emmaus House, Habitat for Humanity, La Amistad, Trinity Night Shelter and CONTINUED > Zaban Couples Center.

LOOKING BACK (CON TI N U ED)
Springmont Montessori Milestones: The Plus Program for students challenged by dyslexia and ADHD was added. Outdoor learning facilities were expanded to include more animal life, which had a positive effect on campus life overall, as well as character education and art programing. Ninety percent of Springmont’s Middle School students are accepted into their high school of choice. A Book Club for parents started – with growing attendance each week. Reach Out: Students continue to support World Water Day. Middle School students partner with the Georgia Department of Transportation through their AdoptA-Highway program. The Middle School students also are spearheading a clothing recycling project. Each fall all students, Toddler through Middle School, help prepare food, and parent volunteers deliver it to Sandy Springs United Methodist Church before Thanksgiving break. Children also select programs for annual support in keeping with tradition, and non-profits include the Atlanta Humane Society, the American Red Cross, the Chattahoochee Nature Preserve, the World Wildlife Fund and many others.
The Westminster schools Milestones: Westminster opened its Innovation Space in the Middle School. The 3,400-square-foot lab is dedicated to Westminster’s STEAM initiative—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The space is used in a variety of ways: by classes working on special projects, for STEAM electives, as practice space for the robotics team, and as a place for students to work on independent projects. The lab is equipped with flexible furniture and tools including 3-D printers, woodworking equipment, laser cutters, and sewing machines that enable students to take ideas from concept to reality. Reach Out: This fall, students, faculty, parents, and alumni will partner with other area schools to complete the 25th collaborative home with Habitat for Humanity. Westminster will continue its “Our Daily Bread” program through the Glenn Institute, which focuses on issues of food access, heritage, sustainability, and philanthropy with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Friends of English Avenue, Truly Living Well, Open Hand and Good Samaritan. Other annual programs include Shower for the Shelters and the Reader-to-Reader book collection in the Lower School, Serving on the 7’s in the Middle School, and the Community Service Club in the Upper School.

strawberries or spread with almond butter and finished with bananas and sprinkles of coconut. Soft Parker Rolls are sliced bite-sized, topped with cream cheese, julienned carrots and dotted with raisins. Alexander is the new executive baker at H&F Bread, returning after a hiatus to the Atlanta bakery that brought him to the city eight years ago. "We're thrilled to have Rob back. He laid a strong product foundation for the company and helped us become the operation we are today. I m excited about the fresh competencies and strengths that will elevate our experienced team to the next level. We are in a great season of growth and are poised to further our company’s future,” said Joe Best, owner and CEO. He and Chef Linton Hopkins founded H & F Bread Co. in 2008 with the vision of producing something Hopkins couldn’t find elsewhere in Atlanta at the time: fresh and delicious artisanal bread, baked daily for his restaurants, Restaurant Eugene and Holeman & Finch Public House. This bread garnered the attention of the culinary community and demand grew the business into a fully functional wholesale bakery, delivering fresh bread daily to hundreds of accounts citywide. The H&F Bread Co. Bread Box retail space opened to the public, offering breads and pastries direct to consumers. Alexander and his wife live in Underwood Hills with their three children who attend E. Rivers Elementary and Peachtree Road United Methodist Church Preschool, so they know a little something about packing lunches and creating tasty and healthy snacks. “I think parents ought to play to their kids' preferences while sticking to healthy values,” said Rob. “The fun approach will open kids' minds beyond traditional snack foods and adding sweet components like Nutella will ensure satisfaction.” H&F’s Southern Sandwich loaf is a favorite go-to for PB&J and school lunches. Croissants and pretzels from the bakery (now open seven days) are a novel item for kids and Rob likes to build small kid friendly sandwiches on the bakery’s sliders rolls. "I keep the snack pantry stocked with Nutella, peanut/almond/ cashew butter, chocolate spread, jams/jellies, whipped cheese, cream cheese and even flavored bagel schmears for spreads to use under the toppings," said Rob. For toppings and garnishes, he looks to crushed cookies, nuts, dried fruits, mini chocolate chips, crushed waffle cones, drizzled honey and fresh herbs to give fun colors, textures and additional flavor. Think about what you might find at a frozen yogurt shop. CONTINUED >

BRINGING HOME THE BREAD (CON TI N U ED)
Rob received a James Beard nomination Spring 2016 and has opened five successful bakeries in his career. He spent several years training with a bakery in the Rhone Alps region of France, apprenticed with the Minneapolis Baking school, and worked alongside French Companion, Lionel Vatinet of La Farm Bakery in Cary, NC in the early stages of his career. Now, he can be found at the helm of the West Midtown bakery…or at home creating colorful and tasty snacks for his biggest fans. H & F Bread Breadbox will be open 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. for pastries and breads to go. Free cup of coffee for all shoppers, too! 1500 Marietta Boulevard.

On Saturday, October 8, music will be featured on various stages on the streets in Alpharetta as well as in restaurants, alleys and patios in the downtown area. Expect to see multiple sets of music in truly unique and intimate settings beginning in the afternoon and extending into the evening. Featured headline performer John Oates, (who along with his musical partner Daryl Hall was inducted this year into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2014) will perform his many original hits with an exceptional acoustic band on Saturday night. Dozens of singer songwriters, including Will Kimbrough and Brigette DeMeyer will perform solo acoustic as well as “in the round” and share stories about how, when and where they wrote their hits and what inspired their brilliant songs. Food and beverages provided by local partners as well as festival merchandise will be available along Old Milton in the center of downtown. t first impression, Hyundai’s “Style To Raise The Bar” motto for its all-new 2017 Elantra certainly confirmed validity. Available in three trims—Eco (starting at $17,150), SE ($20,650), and the Limited (beginning at $22,350)—the value Hyundai offers immediately wows considering all of this model’s augmentations from bumper to bumper. Addressing the more curvaceous exterior, the Limited’s standards are plentiful, including its signature chrome hexagonal grille crowning a lowered front fascia, 17-inch alloy wheels, side mirror turn indicators, and a bottom rear spoiler for sporty edginess. Inside, the Limited’s abundance of technology and driver-friendly features separates itself from most competitors. Standouts include the Blue Link Car System, Bluetooth hands-free phone system, proximity key with a push-button starter, rearview camera, handsfree smart trunk, and the dual-threat smartphone connectivity labeled “Android Auto” and “Apple CarPlay” which make desired apps available on the 7-inch touchscreen. The 2.0L, four-cylinder 147-horsepower engine is enjoyed in three driving modes—Normal, Sport and ECO—supplemented with premium safety installations

P.S. Summer Isn't Over WORDS SUE G. COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY SONYA KRISTINA PHOTOGRAPHY
T
ransforming through color and light, celebrity makeup artist Suni’ s passion for her work began when she picked
up her first paint brush at the age of 11. Angela Weilbaecher (Suni) began her career at Revlon, where she traveled the world painting hundreds of models and seeing products
created. Her work has graced the pages of Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, The Ladies Home Journal and is featured on Good Morning America, The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, Entertainment Tonight and more. She trains with experts in New York and Chicago to bring the latest trends and discoveries to her clients and her make up line. Based at Siggers Hairdressers in Tucker, Suni teaches her clients the fastest and easiest ways to be their personal best: to look in the mirror and embrace themselves and feel beautiful. Angela (pictured left) lives in Buckhead with her husband Derek and twins, Ella and Christian. Suni has been in Buckhead for 24 years and heads to Valenza and Haven for cocktails, Annie's Thai Castle or Dolce's patio for dinner, hits up Boxwoods and BD Jeffries for home decor. We're thrilled to have her tips for staying naturally fresh and on trend for summer in BuckHaven.
Stay Shine Free - On a warm day, eliminate shine with a weightless invisible blotting powder. A must for your handbag to keep the shine away, and give your skin a flawless airbrushed effect.
Best In Shade for Lips - Try a tinted lip balm with a moisturizing treatment to hydrate and brighten your lips.
The Newest Way to Brow - Apply a coat of brow ink onto your brows for extended wear, water resistant color and definition.
Bronze Away - For a shimmer free and brilliantly beautiful contoured look, brush on a mineral-based bronzer around the perimeter of your face and along the cheekbones.
Sheer Perfection - For a quick fix, touch up your face with brightening CC cream that will provide tone-correcting coverage and protection from the sun while preventing shine.
Glow On The Go - For a long-wearing cheek color that Angela "Suni" Weilbaecher of Buckhead 42
