Editor’s Letter

A

Hello, friends.

s you might have guessed, you're going to see some beautiful images of children (and pets) in this issue. Isn't our cover adorable? Buckhead photographer Oana Hogrefe captured this little princess. Atlanta photographer Rupa Kapoor works with children and pets, as well as brides and executives. Her favorite? You guessed it - pups like Levi (pictured here at 5 weeks old and celebrating his one-year birthday). Rupa followed the life of this little cleft-palate puppy who was raised by Alabama Boston Terrier Rescue (ABTR.org). He The proud editor and her family has now grown into a handsome, gorgeous boy and has had surgery to overcome his issues and is still awaiting the perfect forever home! Pet rescue organizations abound here in the southeast, including Atlanta's own Angels Among Us (AngelsAmongUsAnimalRescue.org), Fur Kids (FurKids.org), Atlanta Humane Society (AtlantaHumane.org) and Paws Atlanta (PawsAtlanta.org). Our family has two cats, and I can't remember a time when our household didn't have a rescue cat. My husband and three children are admittedly more cat lovers than I am, but our home wouldn't be a home without Tommy and Johnny (named after Die Hard's John McClane). Tell us about your pets on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/BuckHavenLifestyle). Bring your family (but please leave your pets at home in the shade) to the Brookhaven Chili Cook Off on October 10 from noon - 6 p.m. We'll be there polling YOU for your favorites, snapping photos for the next magazine. See you there! BrookhavenChiliCookoff.com Have a delightful October with your family and pets and don't forget to share your pics on our FB page! ur publisher is a grandfather! Jim Newman's gorgeous daughter, Lauren and her husband Mario Rials, proudly welcomed a baby girl, Brixton Rials. Jim is thrilled, though we just can't imagine how such a young guy could possibly have a grandbaby! Welcome to the Lifestyle Publications Levi, 1 year old family, sweet Brixton.

Focusing on Children in Need is Her Passion MEET MARTHA O'NEILL

ARTICLE NICOLE HUNNICUTT PHOTOGRAPHY AMANDA GIBBS PHOTOGRAPHY

B

uckhead resident Martha O'Neill has a favorite quote: "Use your voice for kindness, your ears for compassion, your hands for charity, your mind for truth and your heart for love." Her heart has been in caring for children ever since she began babysitting as a young teen and throughout college. Raised in the small town of Paris, Texas, O'Neill's family moved to Marietta during high school. She met her husband, Danny while she was a student at the University of Georgia. The couple is raising two beautiful girls, Emme (5) and Leila (almost 2), and live within walking distance of Sarah Smith Elementary, where their oldest attends kindergarten. When Emme was just over a year old, O'Neill felt that passion to serve children stirring inside of her and began asking friends where they donated their time and talents. She heard about the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy (GCCA) and a fundraising gala called the Cheer for Children Ball. Once she started researching the organization, she began to understand just how critical its mission is in championing the needs of sexually and physically abused children through prevention, intervention, therapy and collaboration. The GCCA works to ensure that children receive all the services needed following a report of abuse at no cost to children and families in Fulton and Dekalb County. Over 13,000 children have been served and more than 65,000 adults have been provided child abuse prevention training throughout Georgia. With the weight of her heart and mind on the plights of these children, O'Neill knew the GCCA was where she could help make a difference in her community. She joined the Cheer for Children Ball committee over four years ago and this year is the chair for the GCCA's largest fundraiser. O'Neill continues to find affirmations that her passion has been directed to the right place. When Danny was called to jury duty in early 2014, he served on a child molestation case and heard some of the most disturbing things of his life. The little girl who had been abused was 4 years old, the same age Emme was at the time. The defense attorney was doing a good job of placing doubt in the jurors' minds, and some were leaning toward a not-guilty verdict. Then, they were shown a videotaped interview with the child taken at the GCCA immediately after the incidents had happened. The truth came to light, and the jury all agreed the perpetrator was guilty. Had it not been for that taped forensic interview in an environment where the child felt safe enough to tell her traumatic story, he could have gone free. hotographers have a unique view of the world. They see things we don’t see and gracefully capture subtle smiles, gestures and personality galore. Lifestyle Publications invited Atlanta’s hottest photographers who spend their days working with children and pets, to share their favorite images and explain how they manage to tame the cranky, feisty and fun! They all agreed parents should relax and let them do what they do best. “Try to remember we are surrounded by newborns at least 6 -8 times a week. Just sit back relax and just enjoy this time without having to worry about your new sweet love crying,” says veteran Laura Brett of Laura Brett Photography. Another pro, Katey Penton suggests parents bring treats and toys that will help the little ones to cooperate and choose a time for your session when your child will be in a good mood. Avoid nap and meal times. “And, it can be good to choose a place where the child is comfortable and familiar,” Penton says. Similarly, when photographing pets, remember pets can pick up on stress from their owner if the owner is overly worried about the pet posing this way or that way, says Atlanta pet photographer, Leesia Teh. She says expect to pay around $250 for a one-pet shoot, and another $500 - $2,000 on prints and products like gallery wrapped canvases or albums. Rates for photographers who work with kids start around $150 for the first hour and one child, increasing as the number of subjects and hours are add-

ed. Atlanta’s own Cameron Adams adds that these rates should get parents an unlimited use of images, too. When deciding on what the kids should wear, photographer Oana Hogrefe chimes in: "Clothing should be about comfort, and for families, a palette rather than specific colors. For instance, earth tones instead of all browns. Allow the children to be involved in choosing their clothes or at least some beloved accessories or toys.” And, if you’re planning for an outdoor session, grab a morning or late afternoon session for a beautiful glow from natural light. “We want all of our parents to sit back, relax and enjoy the session. Don't worry about if your baby will cooperate or not. We have been doing this a long time and there isn't anything we can't handle,” promises photographer Jess Kamm whose studio is in North Buckhead. A Southern Mother’s Love MY SWEET VIDALIA ARTICLE RHIANNON JOHNSON

D

eborah Mantella, delivers a powerful, heart-wrenching debut novel filled with love and violence. In 1955, Vidalia Lee Kandal Jackson is 17, married, and pregnant with her first child. After an intense beating from her husband, Jamerson Booth, she prematurely gives birth to their daughter, Cieli Mae. The baby does not survive, but the child’s spirit refuses to leave Vidalia. With a sweet, omniscient voice, Cieli Mae provides the calm commentary to the storm cycles that make up Vidalia’s days. Vidalia confides and converses with Cieli Mae through the following years of abandonment, abuse, multiple miscarriages, and pregnancies. Told by her mother-in-law to not converse with Cieli Mae in public, Vidalia takes to only doing so in private, which is pretty easy out at Tribesmen’s Trailer Park. As a mother of two sets of twin boys before her 23rd birthday, Vidalia sets about to be the most loving, caring and protective provider for her children. She takes them to Sunday School (at The Church of the Twelve Apostles, not her mother-in-law’s River of Hope Springs Eternal Church and Pool Hall,) where The Sisters of Endless Mercy dote on her and the boys. Beloved by all who meet her, the congregation’s endless donations ensure that her and her children are clothed and fed. Nurse Lana Joy and Doc Feldman care for the Jackson tribe as well, but more often than not, their care is for Vidalia after one of Jamerson’s beatings. These unscheduled emergency visits result in patching up Vidalia as well as sending the family home with a stock pile of vegetables, cookies, vitamins, and miscellaneous medical items. After a particular incident by Jamerson causes Vidalia to believe that her children are no longer safe, Vidalia devises a plan, and whether she knows it or not, the town is on her side. Filled with Southern dialect, My Sweet Vidalia is a portrait of one family’s life in the midst of the myriad class and race relations in 1950s rural Georgia. While full of devastating pain and loss,

the novel simultaneously shines a light on the unbreakable human spirit and the power of a mother’s love. Deborah Mantella has lived and taught in various cities in the Northeast and the Midwest. Now residing just outside of Atlanta, she is a member of the Atlanta Writers Club, the Authors Guild, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and meets weekly with her writing critique group. Mantella and her husband love to head intown to the eclectic decor, atmosphere, and “crazy good food” at Il Localina on Highland Ave in Inman Park and also often try to catch one of their daughter’s performances at Actor's Express, Horizon, or the Alliance Theatre. Mantella will be appearing at 27th annual Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word, October 9 - 11 to celebrate My Sweet Vidalia’s October 6 release. Road Trip

Room Service, Woof? ONE BONE PLEASE

ARTICLE MARY WELCH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

W

ho doesn’t love a night in a hotel? A treat upon arrival, a cozy bed and delicious dinners made especially by a top chef — not to mention spending quality time in an English garden. Heaven! Sorry. It’s not for you; it’s for your pet! Yes, the Mandarin Oriental Atlanta offers this luxurious pet program called MOpup, which includes organic bone-shaped cookies prepared by the hotel’s pastry team, a bed, water bowl, doggie dental kit and toys. The cuisine includes such specialities as grilled steelhead salmon with roasted asparagus and glazed carrots and dry aged beef tenderloin with blue cheese mashed potatoes. After a romp in the English garden with dedicated pet-friendly seating area, your pup will need a relaxing cocktail such as the MOcktail or the coconut water-infused “melon puptail.” The Mandarin Oriental charges $100 for the pet stay (25 pound maximum). All across town, hotels are recognizing that guests want to bring man’s (and woman’s) best friend along for the trip — and are making them welcome. In BuckHaven, many hotels not only accept pets, but treat them 42

BuckHavenLifestyle.com | October 2015

as treasured guests. Many hotels have a pet size limit and just about every one will charge you a clean-up fee. The W Hotel offers a custom pet bed, food and water bowls with a floor mat, toy and litter box and scoop. Of course, everyone needs a turndown treat, including your pet. They also offer a pet-in-room sign and dog walking service. There is a $25 supplementary room charge and $100 nonrefundable cleaning fee. The Grand Hyatt Atlanta welcomes traveling canine companions with a hypoallergenic bed, bowl, welcome treat and special in-room dining doggie menu. The Buckhead and Brookhaven hotels maybe welcoming to your pet but if they don’t enjoy the trip, it’s not going to be fun for everyone. Dr. Mark R. St. Onge, DVM, and owner of Buckhaven Veterinary Clinic, says the key to success is preparation. “If you’re traveling by air, check the regulations. It’s very common for airlines to require that you have a certificate of health. Now most of the time they don’t ask it, but you don’t want to gamble and get the only person who gets the TSA agent who demands one. Getting it is very simple,” he says.

Anxiety and motion sickness are other problems. Dr. St. Onge recommends not feeding or giving your pet water before the trip. He says there are a variety of medications, such as Cerenia, that can help control vomiting and anxiety. “Sometimes the answer is giving your pet Benadryl but consult your vet for the proper dosage. If you overdose, the worst is that you pet will sleep his butt off.” He also recommends bringing the routine on the road. If the pet uses a jacket to reduce stress from noise such as thunder, bring it on the trip. If your pet enjoys being in its cage and finds it soothing, take it. “But, if you pet sees his cage as being in prison, then it’s a problem. But remember, it’s easier to clean up vomit in a cage than the backseat!” Also, even though you are enjoying the local cuisine, it may not be good for Fido. Bring their regular food. “Just because you’re at the beach doesn’t mean your pet needs to eat crab legs, oysters and shrimp,” he says. With a little preparation and a great BuckHaven hotel the entire family will have a fantastic hotel experience.

Your Neighbor

Meet Brookhaven's First Dogs

ARTICLE SUE G. COLLINS | PHOTOGRAPHY NICOLE STEPHENS

In Remembrance

R

ebecca Chase Williams has been mayor here in Brookhaven for four months. At City Hall, she plans to continue to focus on the basics—police, paving, parks, permitting, code enforcement, zoning and keeping taxes low, working to ensure that our city remains financially solid and working in the most efficient, ethical and transparent way possible. Williams says her goal is to strive to make Brookhaven exceptional— whether that means building worldclass parks, finding innovative solutions or becoming a national model

for other cities. One of her most beloved efforts has been watching 240 cherry trees being planted in the city, naming the cherry tree as Brookhaven's official tree and helping plan the Cherry Blossom Festival, an annual event set for March. Outside city hall, her cabinet includes her beloved pups, Max and Beanie. The mayor is a long-time supporter of the Humane Society and her family has always had a dog in the household. She and her husband, Dick Williams have lived in Nancy Creek for 30 years.

Rebecca's mother, Geraldine Olson Cheek, passed August 26 at the age of 91. She came from a Norwegian family that homesteaded their farm in South Dakota. She survived the Depression, the Dust Bowl, WW II, and more recently cancer. "She was my rock and inspiration," Rebecca wrote in an email to friends. "She worked as a registered nurse for 44 years and retired in Fayetteville, She moved closer to me, so I was able to be with her every day for the last year until she died August 26th in hospice nearby in Dunwoody." The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Red Cross. Everyone here at BuckHaven Lifestyle extends their warmest condolences to the Williams family.

BHL Who/what lives in your house? KB My husband, Stephen Boyd, my moth-

er-in-law, Margaret Boyd, and Missy, my very spoiled King Charles Cavalier. Our two daughters are out of college and self-employed but still seem to be in and out. Not sure when we will really be true empty nesters!

BHL Do you work outside the home?

KB Yes! I am a residential real estate agent with Keller Williams Re-

alty Peachtree Road. My mom, Holly Boyett, was a successful agent in Atlanta and in the business for many, many years. In 2015, my daughter Kathryn, a CPA and also a Buckhead resident, joined me as a third generation realtor in the family. I love my job! BHL What organization that gets most of your volunteer time? KB We are active members of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Also, my husband co-founded “Beautiful Feet,” a ministry under Atlanta Community Ministries for which I volunteer and help keep him organized! I also volunteer for my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, as recruitment reference board chairman for City of Atlanta private schools. BHL Are you a native Atlantan or transplanted to the area? KB I have lived here since I was 5 years old so yes practically native and have been a Buckhead or Brookhaven resident all my years here in the ATL! BHL Where did you go to college and what was your first job? KB I am a graduate of the University of Georgia. My first job was with Rich’s Department Stores (like so many others of you out there) in the corporate finance department. BHL Favorite ‘pamper yourself’ or splurge item? KB My favorites are the sugar pedicure at Nail, Talk & Tan Salon in Town Brookhaven, or the foot rubs at Sole Spa on Pharr Road in Buckhead. Huff Harrington Home is a favorite for unique and fun splurge gifts! BHL What’s your guiltiest food pleasure? KB Splitting a steak and a great wine at the bar at Bone’s in Buckhead with my husband is one of our oldest and favorite dining splurges. For pizza night outings, we love Avellino’s Pizzeria at the corner of Windsor Parkway and Osborne Rd in Brookhaven. BHL Favorite place to walk near your neighborhood? KB Brookhaven is the best neighborhood for walking. Sometimes we will take the dog and walk up to Newk’s (Town Brookhaven) for Sunday lunch. Or, if we are really adventurous, we will take Marta to the Arts Station and walk home to Brookhaven. No better way to enjoy our city than on foot - you see so much more than by car. BHL Is working out a part of your day? KB I love the flywheel AND flybarre classes at Flywheel Buckhead. Springs Yoga just north of Buckhead is my favorite yoga studio. I also enjoy the variety of classes Capital City Club in Brookhaven. BHL Best vacation ever? KB We took our two girls to New Orleans between Christmas and New Year’s a couple years ago. It was magical. We stayed at the Windsor Court, ate phenomenal food, and showed the family the beautiful side of the Quarter with antique stores and live music performances. The strength of the New Orleans community with the rebuilding of the Lower Ninth Ward and other devastated areas was so gratifying. BHL Favorite gadget, gizmo or APP? KB I live on my iPhone. Regarding apps, Instagram is my favorite for keeping up with family and friends. And for work, I could not be successful without GoFMLS or Supra which are tools for open houses, managing lock boxes, searching listings, and more.

ould you be surprised to learn that women would prefer gaining weight to losing their hair, especially if it’s permanent hair loss? Weight can be lost, but when hair’s gone, it’s gone. “Hair loss stinks for any reason!” says Rebecca Walden, a Brookhaven resident, proclaimed “Wigspert of Atlanta” by a client, one of many whom she has helped feel more beautiful. Her clients include cancer patients, whose hair loss is typically temporary, and women with alopecia or another physical condition that results in permanent hair loss. Parker Hammond is a beautiful 16-year old North Atlanta High School junior, with long blond hair, diagnosed in May with early onset alopecia, an autoimmune skin disease resulting in hair loss. After months of feeling low and frustrated, she beamed with confidence brushing her new wig, showing off her “new” look, which actually looks exactly like her beautiful self! Her mother fought back tears of relief and joy. “I am so glad to have my daughter back.” They were at the Steve Hightower Hair Salon in Buckhead where Rebecca is now happily based. Steve was combing Parker’s new hair, showing her how to brush the bangs softly to frame her adorable face. “If it looks good, I feel good,” she says. “It’s so lightweight!” For Parker and all of Rebecca’s clients with permanent hair loss, Rebecca is a friend for life. She makes them feel confident every time they step out the door. You’ve probably seen some of Rebecca’s clients up close and personal in the past and never even suspected the woman was wearing a wig. Wigs, particularly among caucasian women, are viewed as a last resort when they experience hair loss. “We only see bad wigs. There are people all around you every day, and that’s not their hair! We only notice bad wigs, so we feel negatively about the word wig,” says Rebecca. "There is some stigma, true, but most people have no idea I am wearing one," says Lori Raney, of Honeycutt Creed furniture design in Buckhead. "As a mother of six, my hair was thinning significantly and six years ago I found Rebecca. My new hair has become a part of me." “Rebecca is remarkably and uniquely gifted to do what she does,” says Lisa Simmons of Roswell,

who also received a cancer diagnosis. “It takes a very special person to remain upbeat and encouraging while dealing with people’s fear and anxiety. She is more than a wig consultant – she is a therapist in leather pants and crazy jewelry.” Rebecca's goal is to create the image women are familiar with when they look in the mirror. “Most of my clients just want to look like themselves,” she says. “Working with me is not a make-over experience—it’s a continuation of their lives as they know them and love them.” Walden is a board member of the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund and enjoys hanging out with her husband Lance in Brookhaven, “usually at the bar at Smash in Town Brookhaven it’s just the perfect place to meet friends!” That is never a problem for the Wigspert of Atlanta.

ince 1998, the 2015 Lincoln Navigator continues to scratch that itch for motorists who desire a luxury SUV geared towards providing an almost regal, king-of-the-road experience. The carmaker happily boasts “improved utility, craftsmanship and comfort,” and the difference is certainly noticeable. Its heightened efficiency in ’15 raises eyebrows as well; this model possesses a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 heart which packs 380 horsepower and 16/20 city/highway miles per gallon (17 miles per gallon combined). Sporting a considerably large frame and expansive cabin sitting on 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, this dynamic vessel demands its space—and will get it—while maneuverability, riding comfort, and overall road feel remain uncompromised. Parting Thoughts

Waiting for Schnapps WORDS BEN HAMMETT WALKUSKI

P

ets were taken so seriously in my household growing up that my dad would refer to one dog as his “number two son.” I hope that meant I was number one. The company, companionship and love of many wonderful animals more than compensated for any loneliness that might have come from being an only child. From the day my parents brought me home from the hospital to the day I finally moved out for good nearly 24 years later, our pets were simply part of the family. No matter where we lived, which included eight houses across two states, and a cast of live-in girlfriends, boyfriends and grandmothers, a house was not a home without at least one four-legged friend to greet us, protect us and keep us warm. Whether the purpose they served was functional or pure joy, our pets were there with us—and for us. The first dog in my life was Schnapps, who would innocently roll around in the herb garden and come inside smelling of cilantro—an association that forever ruined the herb for my mother. I recall the first Christmas that sister kittens, Thelma and Louise spent with us, climbing the trunk of our Christmas tree, knocking it and many prized or-

naments straight to the ground. Then there was the mother-son mouser duo of Zoe and Heba (a name inspired by the cat food brand Sheba), who diligently kept our home rodent-free for many years. My mother’s prized Humane Society rescue was Eddie, a handsome and lovable mutt who protected her and served as a source of love and light through one winning battle with cancer and another losing battle. When my mother was gone, Eddie, Thelma and Louise were still there, comforting me with their presence and the gift of fond memories. Since we moved to Atlanta four years ago, we have fostered four cats and a dog with widely varying health, behavior and overall condition. Balancing the many challenges of adulthood, including pet ownership, has been a greater challenge than I ever could have imagined as a child growing up. The experience has filled me with awe and gratitude for the enormous responsibility and sheer love that my parents possessed and exuded seemingly without effort. As we seek to support ourselves, nurture our relationships, advance our careers, maintain a home, and fill our lives with joy, I am hopeful that one day soon a pet will again become part of the family.

1 in 5 Lung Cancer Patients Never Smoked “More women die from lung cancer than from breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer combined,” says Dr. John Moore of the northside Hospital cancer institute. “it’s not just a smoker’s disease. family history and environmental surroundings are also large contributing factors.”

T

he statistics are sobering. The fiveyear survival rate of lung cancer patients is just 15 percent. It’s the leading cause of cancer death among American men and women, and it will claim an estimated 150,000 lives in 2015 alone. But despite the grim realities, the pulmonary physicians of Northside Hospital are more optimistic than ever that lung cancer can be beaten. “If lung cancer is caught early enough, the survival rate is greater than 90 percent,” says Dr. John E. Moore, Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Medical Director of the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute Lung Cancer Program. “With early diagnosis and aggressive treatment, we have a chance to flip these mortality rates.”

The Power of Early Detection Because early symptoms of lung cancer can be misidentified as bronchitis or asthma, many patients are diagnosed during later, less curable stages. Proactive screening and early detection of lung cancer dramatically improves disease survival.

“Low-dose CT scans are the best way to detect the disease before it spreads,” says Dr. Howard Silverboard, Medical Director of the Lung Screening Program and Chairman of Lung Oncology Steering Committee at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute. “It’s important that men and women view lung cancer screenings as part of their regular annual healthcare maintenance regimen, just like mammograms and colonoscopies.”

Advancements in Treatment At Northside Hospital, great strides are taken to ensure patients experience a smooth and seamless treatment plan following the detection of cancer.

“It can be overwhelming to receive a cancer diagnosis and then need to schedule all the necessary followup appointments,” acknowledges Dr. Silverboard. “This is why we’ve added a nurse navigator to help patients overcome logistical obstacles to care. Additionally, all our nurses are specifically trained in lung cancer care to help patients recover as quickly as possible.” Dr. Moore notes that over half the lung cancer surgeries at Northside Hospital are performed with minimally invasive thoracoscopic (VATS) and robotic techniques that yield some of the most successful results in the country, even when compared to other prestigious lung cancer programs. Northside Hospital also embraces the power of molecular-based treatment, which targets individual genetic mutations in order to spare healthy cells and reduce side effects. “Our commitment to lung cancer care and treatment is unwavering because all of our patients deserve our best,” says Dr. Silverboard.
