I

may be biased, but Cape Ann is simply one of the greatest places on Earth. If you live and work here, you know exactly what I am talking about. Natural beauty, art and music, beaches, four seasons, restaurants and more are all in abundance. Sure, Rt. 128 can help us get to major cities or mountains in almost no time at all…but why would we want to leave? Starting with the launch of Cape Ann Lifestyle magazine, our plan is to introduce you to some of the interesting people, businesses and organizations that call this area home. From Beverly to Gloucester and beyond, dynamic personalities and compelling stories are out there. We want to bring them to you through high-quality content that brings these stories to life.

Let me start by introducing myself. Save for college in Worcester at Clark University and a short spell living in Boston, most of my life has been spent living in Beverly and Essex. I graduated from Beverly High School 20 years ago, and I live in Beverly today with my wife and a menagerie of cats and dogs.

Single-Stream Recycling in Gloucester This summer, Gloucester will move away from having to sort household recyclables. New technology and trucks helped make the change possible, removing the need to sort paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and plastics in separate bins. An oft-cited excuse for people who don’t recycle is the time devoted to sorting their recyclables. Multiple bins can also take up too much room. Moving to a single stream recycling system makes it much easier for Gloucester residents to take part in mandatory curbside recycling.

Home Sweet Home High quality, compassionate care is Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s mission Article Eric Slack | Photography Provided

L

ocated on the Addison Gilbert Hospital campus in Gloucester, Seacoast Nursing & Rehabilitation Center strives to provide the best possible care for individuals with complex medical and surgical issues. From its modern facility, Seacoast offers short-term rehabilitation programs, specialized Alzheimer’s care, respite care, complete medical and skilled nursing care. A member of Lahey Health Senior Care, Seacoast is part of a notfor-profit organization focused on serving North Shore residents through a full continuum of care. Its brick exterior, views of Gloucester, and private and semiprivate accommodations are designed to help Seacoast feel more like a home than a healthcare facility. “We have 142 beds here, and our primary service area is Cape Ann from Rockport and Gloucester to Magnolia and Essex,” Executive Director Steve Doyle says. “We’ve focused on long-term care and are increasing our focus on short-term rehab so we can help patients get healthy and home.” Seacoast takes a multidisciplinary approach to care, offering physician and nursing care, social services, case management, physical, occupational and respiratory therapy, speech therapy, and nutrition and pharmaceutical management. 12 Cape Ann Lifestyle | August 2014

“Our services are definitely needed in the area,” Doyle says. “We try to get out in front of the community in many ways so people know who we are. We can take care of anyone who can’t be taken care of at home, whether they are short-term patients or long-term residents.” Skilled nursing care is provided 24 hours a day at Seacoast. Its services include everything from IV therapy, pain management, wound management, oncology care and restorative nursing care to nutritional therapy, cardiopulmonary treatment, diabetes management and enteral feedings. “We now have a sicker patient population than in the past, and we are doing more short term care and working to get patients home faster,” Doyle says. “There is more focus now

on quality care and achieving high level patient outcomes and patient satisfaction levels.” Seacoast also has a certified Alzheimer’s care unit. Through creative and therapeutic programs administered by specially trained staff members, Seacoast’s goal is to offer compassionate care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to providing inpatient rehabilitation services for many conditions, Seacoast also provides specialized rehabilitation programs. These programs include orthopedic rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, complex medical care, pulmonary rehabilitation and cardiac care. Seacoast’s rehabilitation department works to develop plans for patients that can allow them to have the best possible quality of life. It uses state-of-the-art technology such as ultrasound treatment, electrical stimulation and short wave diathermy. Short-term rehabilitation is another focus for Seacoast. It has a dedicated short-term rehabilitation unit where it takes an interdisciplinary team approach to the creation of customized care plans. Additional services offered at Seacoast include therapeutic recreational services, dietary management, hairdresser and barber services, psychiatric services, podiatry, optometry and dentistry. Ultimately, Seacoast wants both patients and staff to feel at home. Caregivers get to know patients, residents and their families. That level of familiarity is an important part of delivering compassionate, high quality care.

In the years to come, Seacoast plans to continue enhancing amenities and making sure its physical plant is in the best shape possible. It has even invested in artwork from local artists to help the facility stay connected to the community. “We want people to receive excellent care, to get home quickly, and to stay healthy once they are home,” Doyle says. “As part of the larger Lahey continuum, we can be part of providing a seamless experience and great customer service. This is a tight knit community, and the people here are very caring and giving. That is nice to see.”

People. Pride. Performance.

Lifelong Love Blue River Diamonds is a product of three generations of jewelry experience Article Eric Slack | Photography Provided

F

or Neal Van Dam, the jewelry business is more than just a passion. A third-generation professional in the jewelry sector, Van Dam is a GIA graduate gemologist who has gemstones in his blood. The founder and manager of Blue River Diamonds, Van Dam opened his first store at the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers. Now, the second Blue River Diamonds is open at 189 Main St. in Gloucester, and the Blue River Diamonds story is continuing to unfold. “I grew up in this business,” Van Dam says. “I really enjoyed it and have learned a lot about gemstones. I tried to do other things but I realized my true love and passion was jewelry and gemology.” Blue River Diamonds first opened at Liberty Tree Mall four years ago. The concept behind the creation of Blue River Diamonds was to create a company that used nothing but conflict free diamonds. It was to be a business that would provide options for customers, such as recycled diamonds and Canadian diamonds. In addition to guaranteeing that its gemstones and diamonds are conflict free, Blue River Diamonds uses 95 to 100 percent recycled gold in all of its diamond mountings. “Blue River Diamonds has been an eco-friendly concept from the start,” Van Dam says. Having a legacy connected to his father’s Jade Tree Jewelers (once a long-time staple at the Liberty Tree Mall) and his time with Helzberg Diamonds when it had a presence in the region, Van Dam was confident the Blue River concept would succeed. He felt acquiring the right product lines would allow the company to build a customer base and a trust level over time. “We knew a lot of people in the area, and almost all of the people who work here have at least four or five years experience in the 14 Cape Ann Lifestyle | August 2014

business,” Van Dam says. “We have sought out some of the best people in the area, who have become great assets for us.” Blue River has also made a conscious effort to get products made in the U.S., and about half of its product mix comes from New England. Most of its bridal pieces, the Cape Cod Collection, Alex and Ani, and Alamea wedding bands all come from the U.S. “We try to carry things that are unique, and we try to have something for everybody,” Van Dam says. Having built a strong business in Danvers, Blue River felt the time was right to expand. Van Dam says he immediately fell in love with the former Gloucester Safe Deposit & Trust Co. building, and the second Blue River opened up last November. “This was an opportunity to build out a store in a landmark building exactly the way we wanted,” Van Dam says. “When you walk into the Gloucester store, it is consistent with the image we want to convey.” Van Dam feels Blue River has put together a team of sales associates and diamond consultants that can help customers find the right piece of jewelry. He believes the company can stand behind the craftsmanship of its jewelry, and he believes Blue River can make purchasing jewelry affordable for any customer. His goal has been to make Blue River Diamonds stand out from the competition. Now that his company has a retail presence in Danvers and Gloucester, Van Dam is looking forward to future opportunities to grow as a business and a community member. “We want to be involved in our communities very much,” Van Dam says. “We’ve supported the Danvers Little League, and Gloucester is a great arts community. We want our communities to trust our concept. We have to build trust with customers one person at a time.”

Music and a Message Pingree’s Marisa Kouroubacalis has yet to meet a challenge she can’t face Article Nicholas Pierce | Photography Provided

M

arisa Kouroubacalis has just finished her junior year at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, and she is bursting with excitement to return next year. Not only will she be a senior and planning for the future, but she is also the newly elected student-body president. She is incredibly proud to discuss her new role. “I love Pingree and I want it to reach its full potential,” Kouroubacalis says. “I really want all the students to enjoy themselves, to break down the barriers between the different grades, and bring us together as a community.” This would be pretty ambitious for any high school student president, and the race was equally as daring. “We only found out about a week before elections, and I had to then gather 50 signatures to be eligible,” Kouroubacalis says. “There were 14 people running. We all had to give a speech in front of the whole school, so I got up there, shared my message, showed them my personality, and I was really shocked when I was elected. I do so much outside of school, it’s an honor to be trusted to lead next year.”

Marisa definitely comes with a message–and being busy is an understatement. In addition to her upcoming presidential duties, Marisa is also half of the band Michael and Marisa, a brother-sister pop rock group, currently preparing for their next summer tour. “My brother and I started performing when we were seven and eight years old,” Kouroubacalis says. “Since then, we’ve performed in more than 300 shows nationwide.” Marisa features on drums and vocals with her brother Michael, also on vocals, and guitar. In 2008, the duo released their first album Kickin’ It Together. Two years later, they released the follow-up It’s Like That, which featured the track “The Same,” a song about anti-bullying that was highlighted on CNN, PBS, The Huffington Post, and more— impressive from someone only 13 years old at the time. These two high school students have since taken their music nationwide. They’ve opened for artists like David Archuleta and Greyson Chance; they’ve also performed at both the Whisky A Go Go and Roxy Nightclubs in Hollywood. “It’s a great way to reach as many people as possible and spread a positive message,” Kouroubacalis says. That message has continued in their follow-up single “Beautiful Comeback,” about addressing failures. “When I see something in the world that I want to change, I use music to do it,” Kouroubacalis explains. If that weren’t enough, Kouroubacalis also plays piano, bass guitar and ukulele. Why the ukulele? “It’s really portable, so I can travel and I’m able to write songs wherever I go,” Kouroubacalis says. In their new show, Marisa is planning to play all the instruments she knows. And even though the drums are still her first choice, she looks forward to the opportunity to come out from behind the drum set. So, what’s next for a soon-to-be senior, school president, and rock/pop musician? College, of course. While on tour this summer, Marisa plans to tour some college campuses as well. But she’s not settling for one degree. “I’m planning to double in music and either economics or entrepreneurship so I will be able to manage the business aspect of my career as well,” Kouroubacalis says. Kouroubacalis is currently targeting schools along the east coast so she and her brother can continue to collaborate. Expect a lot more music and inspirational messages from her in the future. Michael and Marisa’s third album is currently set for release this summer. You can check out their current singles and videos at MichaelAndMarisa.com. August 2014 | Cape Ann Lifestyle 15

riving along Route 127 from Manchester-by-the-Sea and ending your day in Rockport is the perfect way to visit the beautiful beaches, trails and businesses of Cape Ann. Browsing through the shops or pulling over beach side to watch the boats and waves is a favorite pastime of many Cape Ann residents. On one such day, you can have a delicious breakfast at one of Cape Ann’s favorite restaurants, visit unique shops and secluded beaches, kayak to a delicious lobster lunch, hike along the coast to see vistas all the way to Maine, and finally end the day with a gourmet dinner on the water. The Beach Street Café–a Cape Ann staple–at 35 Beach Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea is the perfect spot to kick off a day of adventure. Down the winding road, the trees open up to two small beaches: Black and White Beach on the calm waters of Kettle Cove. Aptly named after the different colors of the sand, Black and White Beach is the perfect place to pull over, dip your toes in the ocean and get excited for your afternoon on the water. Follow Ocean Street back to Route 127, and turn right onto Raymond Street and right again onto Shore Road to take in the beautiful ocean view of Magnolia. The gorgeous Atlantic infinitely spans out over the horizon. This is Cape Ann at its finest. Wind your way back to Route 127 and follow it to Discovery Adventures at 1077 Washington Street in Gloucester for a kayaking tour with lunch and hiking. Started 15 years ago by Kacy Lafferty offering sea excursions to local Gloucester children, Discovery Adventures now hosts hourly rentals and tours for kayakers, paddle boarders and scuba divers. Discovery Adventures also leads an exciting summer camp for children interested in marine biology and ecology. Of the many tours offered, the kayak and hike along Folly Cove is the perfect mid-day excursion. Starting with an easy paddle along the rocky shores of Folly Cove, you will enjoy beautiful views of Gloucester and the Atlantic. Appropriate for families with children as young as five, this tour will lead you to the Lobster Pool Restaurant at 329 Granite Street in Rockport where you can sit outside looking out at the ocean while enjoying a delicious lobster with drawn butter, a lobster roll or delicious homemade seafood chowder. The Lobster Pool is open until 8 p.m.

After a delicious lunch, it is time to explore Halibut Point State Park. Along the water, this easy hike overlooks the Atlantic with views north to Maine and New Hampshire. When you return to Folly Cove, you will paddle back to Discovery Adventures along the coast. Discovery Adventures tours start at $40 and single kayak rentals are $25 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour. Tandem (two person) kayaks are $30 for the first hour and $15 each additional hour. In addition to kayak rentals and tours, Discovery Adventures also offers stand-up paddleboard rentals for $25 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour. Matter of Perspective A lifetime of inspiration drives Rockport artist Karen Tusinski. Article Bethany Tomich | Photography Provided

even years ago, Karen Tusinski opened her studio on Main Street in Rockport. Her paintings of bright red poppies in layers of oil paint burst with color and personality. At first inspection, they are beautiful, bright abstract f lorals, but the layers of oil reveal a more complex composition. “The underpainting of vertical lines activates the painting,” explains Tusinski. “I love the space between the stems and that space, the non-objective perspective, and absence of f lowers is as important as the f lowers themselves.” Inspired by her artist grandfather, who painted at the kitchen table everyday, Tusinski graduated from Beverly’s Montserrat College of Art. During her time at Montserrat, Tusinski visited Viterbo, Italy. In her journals of the trip, which she continues to reference in her work, she focused on grid-like abstract painting, always exploring the use of space and the lack thereof. It was back in Cape Ann, in a studio in Gloucester, where she incorporated the bright organic shapes of poppies. Layer upon layer of oil paint creates multifaceted, abstract images that are at once recognizable and also challenge the viewer’s perspective, by forcing the eye to explore the canvas, and look between the stems to the space beneath. The dynamism of her paintings has led to several exhibitions, including the CODA Gallery in Park City, Utah, the Gleason Art Gallery in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and Jules Place in Boston. In addition, her paintings were chosen by set designer, Nelson Coates, production designer for The Proposal, filmed in Rockport. Sandra Bullock, one of the movie’s stars, bought several paintings after seeing them on set and in the gallery. “I loved opening my gallery in Rockport,” says Tusinski. “Seeing the art on the wall and speaking with people about my art has changed the way I see it. I love to explore space and use non-objective perspectives to challenge the eye. Every painting teaches me something and gives me 10 more ideas for new paintings.” In addition to her poppies, Tusinski is also working on a series of paintings continued >

of Pebble Beach in Rockport. In these, Tusinski’s exploitation of negative space in layers of textured oil creates an amazing seascape. Using lines to divide the canvas, and layers of white oil almost carved into repeated circular pebbles, she captures the simple beauty of one of Rockport’s favorite spots. Tusinski also incorporates pottery into her work. Originally a potter, Tusinski’s use of non-objective perspective enables her to use images of vases, bowls and jars to challenge how the viewer looks at her paintings and to play with how the eye assumes one perspective in one plane, but change it in another. “Just being around other artists inspires me. There are so many types of artists in Rockport that create balance and diversity.” Tusinski continues. “Once you live here, it’s in your blood. Rockport is so unique for the community of artists and their variety of styles.” Visit Tusinski Gallery at 2 Main Street in Rockport 978.546.2244 TusinskiGallery.com Facebook.com/Karen.Tusinski Twitter.com/TusinskiGallery

BMW’s Spirited M235i Puts a Smile on Your Face Article and Photography Tom Strongman

B

MW’s M235i is the spiritual cousin to the 1600/2002 from the late 1960s and early 1970s. I bought a white 1600 in 1969 because I couldn’t afford the more powerful 2002 and I loved it. It was small on the outside yet roomy inside, had incredible visibility thanks to the tall windows and it handled like a sports car. The strategy behind the 2 Series is similar to that used for the 1600/2002: Make a compact coupe with sporty handling and, in the case of the M235i, blistering performance and incredible fuel economy for such a powerful car. The M235i has 320 twin-turbo horsepower from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder and either an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The car from BMW’s press fleet had the eightspeed automatic with manual shift paddles, and it was delightful. Hard-core enthusiasts may choose the manual but 26 Cape Ann Lifestyle | August 2014

frankly, the automatic is so good, and can be shifted manually when desired, that it would be my choice. Base price for the M235i is $44,025. The 240-horsepower 228i has a four-cylinder engine and its base price is $33,025. My 1600 had several recurring issues that eventually caused me to sell it after a couple of years but I still remember how much fun it was to drive. Those memories came flooding back when I took an M235i on a weekend trip because it was a blast. I missed a few things on my trip, namely a navigation system, satellite radio and heated seats. Those items would bump the price by $4,450, pushing the sticker price to more than $48,000. The M235i is fun every time you slip into the deeply contoured sport seat that fits as if it were made for you. The chassis is tuned to deliver a taut, well-controlled ride and it loves to be tossed into a turn. Still, the ride

is compliant enough to be pleasant for everyday driving. The adaptable suspension, M Sport brakes and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires are perfectly matched. Being able to select Sport Plus, Sport, Comfort or Eco Pro drive settings with a button on the console lets the driver tailor the car to suit his or her mood. Sport mode is the most fun, of course, because each gear is held a little longer, each shift of the eight-speed automatic is a little firmer and the exhaust sounds throatier. Comfort is a good everyday setting, and Eco Pro is perfect for long stretches of highway travel. Eco Pro softens the throttle response, lets the car coast with the engine at idle when the throttle is released and cycles the air conditioning on and off to reduce the drag on the engine. The driver can select which of those functions is active. I selected the coasting feature and disabled the others. Rolling to St. Louis with

Interstate 70 traffic that was moving well past the speed limit, I averaged 29.1 miles per gallon. The return trip was interrupted with several rainstorms, but my average was 28.6 for nearly 500 miles of fast driving. The M235i’s cabin is businesslike. The instrument panel has easy-to-read analog gauges. The sport seats have a wide range of adjustability that makes them a great place to be for hours at a time. Whereas the 1600/2002 had a surprisingly spacious back seat, due mainly to a tall, upright roof, the one in the M235i coupe would be cramped for most adults. The trunk has decent space, and fold-down rear seats give some flexibility for carrying large objects.

Today’s Pingree

Price The test car’s base price was

$44,025. Options included keyless entry and leather seats. Warranty Four years or 50,000 miles. All

At a glance Point: The M235i is a ball of fun rolled into a fairly sedate two-door coupe. The 320-horsepower engine is a delight, sports seats fit like a glove and fuel economy is amazing given the power output of the engine. Counterpoint: The boy-racer front fascia is a bit overstated, the back seat is small and the price is substantial.
