Bon appétit... Que aproveche... Dig In Mate!

As we embrace the incoming crisp air and colorful October foliage of fall, we are thrilled to present our luxury Food and Drink Issue. This season is a perfect time to reflect on the joy and warmth of gathering with family and friends around the table. In Canton, these moments are steeped in culinary traditions that nourish our bodies and enrich our souls.

Eating and drinking together builds more than just good memories; it strengthens the bonds of our community. Here in Canton, our diverse palates and tastes celebrate the inclusivity that is the hallmark of our small-town charm. From the sophisticated offerings on a beautiful Southernite Interiors table holding the artisanal charcuterie from The Gathering Board to the hearty fare of gastro pubs, our unique local offerings satisfy every craving and bring us together in shared happiness.

Bizarre Coffee leads our community vibe and offers a cozy corner for coffee lovers to revel in expertly crafted 'Good Mood Juice" that warms the spirit as the temperatures drop. Sabrina's team is talented, spooky, and incredible at Halloween. Their creative flow is as dominant as the names and weird smiles that come with each sip.

The Ole Blind Dog Pub across the East Canton line is a testament to the timeless tradition of pub culture, where friends meet to enjoy robust flavors and lively exchanges. The gastro delights served here are not just meals but a celebration of friendship and local tastes. Thank you to Sean O'Keefe for his global expertise and partnership in writing this piece for Canton.

Let’s cherish the diversity of our tastes and the joy of sharing meals, for in these moments, we find the true heart of our community. Both the artisanal charcuterie spectaculars from The Gathering Board in Holly Springs as well as the North GA wineries invite us to explore their rich tapestries of flavors this season. Let’s cherish the diversity of our tastes and the joy of sharing meals, for in these moments, we find the true heart of our community.

Thank you for your continued support of our local culinary scene. We hope this issue inspires you to indulge in the bounties of fall and enjoy the company of those who make every meal memorable.

FEELIN’ A LITTLE IRISH

AN IRISH GEM OF OLD WORLD TRADITIONS AND MODERN COMFORTS

Old Blind Dog Irish Pub in Crabapple is a beloved local establishment that captures the essence of a traditional Irish neighborhood pub. It has become a cultural touchstone, preserving and celebrating Irish heritage through its decor, music, and food. Patrons can enjoy hearty meals like Shepard’s Pie or Fish and Chips, often accompanied by a perfectly poured pint of Guinness.

ARTICLE BY SEAN O’KEEFE PHOTOGRAPHY BY OLD BLIND DOG

Since its opening, it has become a cornerstone of the Crabapple community, known for its warm hospitality, authentic ambiance, and menu that delights both locals and visitors alike. From the moment you step inside Old Blind Dog, you are transported to a cozy, inviting setting reminiscent of a true Irish pub from centuries ago. The pub's design incorporates rich wood paneling, ornate stained glass, and vintage memorabilia that evoke the charm and history of Ireland and the British Isles. Dim lighting and comfortable seating areas create an atmosphere perfect for relaxing with friends or enjoying a quiet meal.

“I think what truly sets us apart from other places is not just our recipes but the quality of the ingredients we use,” says the general manager, Danny Edmonds. “We use ground lamb in our Shepherd’s Pie and top it with only the best Irish cheddar and the corned beef in our Reuben, Corned Beef, and Cabbage, and our Eggrolls are the best!” Guests always return for incredible service, incomparable quality, and the unique atmosphere created by Ron Wallace, Old Blind Dog’s owner/operator. The story behind the naming of Old Blind Dog Irish Pub is as unique as the pub itself. According to Wallace, choosing

Private Harp Room
“ IT’S NOT JUST OUR RECIPES BUT THE QUALITY OF THE INGREDIENTS.”

the name was more time-consuming than building the pub. Late one evening, Wallace compiled a list of ten Celticinspired names and sent it out to about 400 people, who then shared it with their friends. In total, over 1,000 people participated in selecting their favorite name from the list. Wallace had promised that once a consensus was reached, that name would be chosen.

As fate would have it, while working on this list, Wallace's 125-pound American Bulldog, who was blind in one eye, lay beside his desk. As he guided her to bed that night, he casually remarked, "Okay, old blind dog, let's go to bed." On a whim,

he added "Old Blind Dog" to the list of potential names as a joke.

To his surprise, the next day, the name "Old Blind Dog" overwhelmingly emerged as the favorite among the voters. And so, the pub was christened "Old Blind Dog Irish Pub," a name that carries with it a heartwarming story of an unexpected consensus and the loyal companionship of Wallace's beloved dog.

Old Blind Dog Irish Pub achieved a significant milestone in 2015 when it was awarded the title of Best Irish Pub in the World by The Federation of Irish Pubs, based in Dublin, Ireland. This prestigious recognition is given to pubs that excel in several categories,

including drink, food, atmosphere, and, most importantly, "Craic."

The selection process for this award is highly competitive, beginning with applications from pubs around the globe. Each year, ten finalists are chosen, and Old Blind Dog made the list in 2015. From there, the competition intensified as the judging committee conducted further evaluations. A team from The Federation of Irish Pubs visited Old Blind Dog, spending several days assessing the pub's various aspects. They conducted guest interviews, tasted the food and drinks, and immersed themselves in the atmosphere.

The highest point value was awarded for "Craic," an Irish term encapsulating the sense of fun, enjoyment, and good times a pub offers. Pronounced "crack," Craic is essential to the Irish pub experience and reflects the lively, welcoming vibe that Old Blind Dog had successfully cultivated when they opened their doors to the very first guests.

Old Blind Dog is more than just a place to eat and drink; it is a cultural haven where stories are shared, friendships are forged, and the spirit of community thrives. See you at the pub!

SOUTHERN STYLE GOULASH

WELCOME HARVEST WITH THIS SIMPLE SOUP RECIPE

HistoryToday.com explains that goulash is a beefy soup that originated in the barren beauty of the Hungarian plains during the ninth century. The dish was prepared by Hungarian Cowboys who spent months roaming the vast expanses of Eastern Europe on horseback while tending to their cattle. A lifestyle of sleeping under the stars calls for simple meals. Such soups spread throughout Europe and later across the world.

Though the soup is intimately linked with Hungarian culture, my

grandmother created a Southernstyle version. To make supper time feel fancy, she embellished this easy weeknight meal by describing it as a special recipe from Hungary. She was known to stretch the truth with her imaginative tales, but she was right about this recipe’s origin.

Goulash is a quick, economical dinner with robust tomatoes and macaroni noodles for any working mom to whip up on a whim.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 Pound Cooked Ground Beef

• 1 Yellow Onion Diced

• 4-5 Russet Potatoes Peeled and Cut into Cubes

• 1- 28 Ounce Can of Whole Tomatoes

• 1 Cup Elbow Macaroni Noodles

• Salt and Course-Ground Black Pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat a lightly greased pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

2. Add the ground beef and brown.

3. Drain off any liquid or grease. Return to pot or Dutch oven to heat.

4. Add in onion, potatoes, tomatoes, salt and pepper.

5. Cover with water and boil. Stir occasionally, add more water as needed and until potatoes are cooked.

6. Stir in noodles and simmer until the noodles are fully cooked.

7. Serve with Southern cornbread.
