Embracing Love Local: A Celebration of Community and Connection

Dear Readers,

As winter settles in, we're excited to share our Love Local issue, celebrating the community, creativity, and generosity that make our city extraordinary. February, often linked with love and connection, is the perfect time to spotlight the businesses, artists, and individuals who pour their hearts into making Canton a vibrant and inspiring place to live.

This issue invites you to experience the colorful heart of downtown Canton, where Mural Fest brought the streets to life this past fall. The murals are not just visually stunning; they reflect the soul of our community, showcasing the creativity and unity that make Canton unique.

We also highlight Acts of Kindness, a local charity dedicated to supporting hospital staff and frontline workers. Through care packages and small gestures of love, this organization reminds us that kindness often comes in the simplest forms, making a big impact on those who selflessly serve our community.

Another exciting story focuses on the Canton Theatre, a beloved landmark undergoing a renovation. The project blends the past and future, updating the theater to meet modern needs while preserving its historic charm. This revitalization ensures that the theater will continue to serve our community for generations to come.

In addition, we feature the Canton Culture Collective, a group dedicated to boosting the city’s arts and cultural scene. Through collaboration and community-building, the Collective is elevating local talent and fostering connections between artists, businesses, and organizations. Their work strengthens the cultural and economic landscape of Stark County.

As we celebrate love this month, it’s important to remember that love for our community extends beyond romantic gestures. It’s about supporting local businesses, investing in our shared spaces, and appreciating the incredible people who make our community thrive. This issue is a tribute to that love—the love we show one another, our city, and the places that make it home.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating local. We hope you continue to discover and support the many treasures our community has to offer.

With warmest wishes, NICOLE

Finding Light after the Darkness

Our healing journey began four years ago, with faith, hope, and resilience that took us from despair to the joy of blessing others. On November 16, 2020, our lives changed when my husband, Jonathan, woke up with a 103° fever, and we knew the invisible COVID-19 virus had entered our home.

Less than two weeks later, on November 25, Jonathan's condition worsened, and his health deteriorated to the point that he asked me to call an ambulance. He was admitted to Aultman Hospital with double pneumonia and dehydration. On November 28, I received a FaceTime call that became all too familiar, as Jonathan, tearful and struggling to breathe, said goodbye. The medical team made the difficult decision to intubate him and place him on a ventilator. Knowing it could be the last time we saw each other, we shared a prayer and our goodbyes.

Due to visitation restrictions, I had to relinquish control to the medical staff. However, the nurses allowed me to call and check in for updates throughout the day. I was treated with patience and kindness, and over the weeks, I got to know the nurses who were taking care of Jonathan. They truly became part of my family.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

The Aultman nurses, "angels" as we called them, never gave up on Jonathan. They kept me informed, answered all my questions, and shared in my sorrow. Some sang praise songs while caring for him, offering emotional support in ways I will never forget. Their empathy and compassion were a lifeline during those long, uncertain days.

In an effort to show our appreciation, we began sending food and notes of gratitude to the medical staff. These dedicated individuals were putting their own lives on hold, risking their safety to care for others. Their sacrifices were immeasurable, and we wanted to give back in whatever way we could.

After months of worry and sleepless nights, Jonathan miraculously woke up on January 1, 2021. He had defied the odds and became a living testament to the power of prayer and the strength of the human spirit.

In 2025, our mission with Another Act of Kindness is to spread love and compassion to frontline workers in our community. We organize acts of kindness to show appreciation for their dedication. We also support the education of future nurses and respiratory therapists by awarding scholarships each spring. Additionally, we offer mental health and wellness retreats, titled Healing the Healers, for nurses and other frontline workers. These retreats provide tools to cope with compassion fatigue, burnout, and vicarious trauma, which can improve job satisfaction and mental health. We also provide Code Lavender comfort items for families of patients in intensive care units at local hospitals. These items include blankets, lip balm, lotion, books, coloring pages, and lavender sachets to provide comfort during challenging times.

Looking back, we never imagined that such a harrowing experience could lead to such positive outcomes. Along the way, we’ve connected with incredible people and have been blessed beyond measure. It feels so rewarding to be kind and share our compassion with others.

We are always welcoming new volunteers to join us in our mission. Our second annual gala, Celebrating Community Kindness, will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Arrowhead Golf and Event Center in North Canton, Ohio, from 5:30-10:00 pm. We would love to celebrate life with you.

A Century of Vision

TRANSFORMING THE CANTON PALACE THEATRE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

ARTICLE BY GEORGIA PAXOS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Palace Lobby future rendering
Palace Lobby

Nearly 100 years ago, Harry Harper Ink gifted Canton one of its most enduring treasures: the Canton Palace Theatre. Built as a million-dollar vaudeville and movie house, the theatre reflected Ink’s passion for the community and his deep commitment to improving the lives of its people. Ink, a local entrepreneur and industrialist, founded the Tonsiline company, which produced a popular cough syrup famously marketed in giraffe-shaped bottles. Today, two giraffe plaques above the theatre’s proscenium arch serve as the only visible tribute to his remarkable generosity.

Harry Harper Ink’s vision was clear: the theatre was not about him but about creating something extraordinary for the community. His selflessness planted the seeds of a cultural institution that would grow to enrich the lives of generations.

As we approach the Palace Theatre’s 100th anniversary, this spirit of selflessness and commitment to the public good continues to guide us. With a bold $16.3 million capital campaign, we aim to ensure the theatre remains a beacon of culture, accessibility, and economic growth for generations to come.

“THE PALACE IS NOT DEAD”

The Canton Palace Theatre’s story could have ended in the late 1970s when it faced imminent demolition. Instead, it became a testament to the power of community action and youthful enthusiasm. The theatre’s salvation began with the Canton Jaycees, a dynamic group of young professionals who joined forces with the Canton Preservation Society to rescue the beloved landmark.

Gary Mull, a key member of the Jaycees, recalls the urgency of the moment. "Jaycees and the Preservation Society gathered a coalition of interested parties, created the 501(c)(3), and raised money for it to be

renovated," Mull explains. This coalition gave rise to the Canton Palace Theatre Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the theatre’s revival.

The restoration began with a symbolic gesture: renovating the iconic marquee. "People asked, why would that be the first thing you renovate? And we did that because we wanted to demonstrate outwardly and publicly that the Palace is not dead," Mull says. The marquee’s dazzling lights reignited interest in the Palace and served as a rallying point for the community.

However, the journey was far from easy. Years of neglect had left the building in dire condition, with the roof being a particularly critical challenge. Yet the coalition persevered, and just three years after the project began, the Palace reopened on a limited basis, rekindling its magic even as renovations continued.

For Mull, who served 15 years on the Palace Theatre Association’s Board of Directors, the effort was deeply personal. "I remember thinking, one day, we'll come to an event here and no one will know who we are, but they will get to enjoy all the work we're doing now," he reflects. The Jaycees continued the tradition of Harry Harper Ink and saw their efforts not as monuments to themselves but as gifts to the community, ensuring future generations could benefit from a shared legacy.

PRESERVING A LEGACY, BUILDING THE FUTURE

The Canton Palace Theatre has stood the test of time, evolving with the needs of its audience. However, to keep this beloved venue competitive and inclusive, significant updates are essential. These changes aren’t just about preserving history; they’re about unlocking the theatre’s full potential as an economic and cultural engine for downtown Canton.

“People asked, why would that be the first thing you renovate? And we did that because we wanted to demonstrate outwardly and publicly that the Palace is not dead.”

Today, we are only $8 million away from reaching our ambitious goal. Meeting this milestone will allow us to:

• Expand the stage and install a permanent loading dock to accommodate top-tier performers who have long bypassed Canton due to space constraints.

• Add a secondary lobby to enhance the guest experience with expanded concessions and gathering spaces.

• Increase premium seating to attract larger audiences and elevate the theatre’s profile among regional venues.

• Improve accessibility by adding an elevator to the balcony and creating more ADAcompliant restrooms. These enhancements will enable the Canton Palace Theatre to host a broader spectrum of events, draw larger audiences, and extend rental opportunities to other organizations—all while boosting the economic vitality of Stark County.

A THEATRE FOR THE COMMUNITY, INSPIRED BY THE COMMUNITY

Harry Harper Ink’s original gift was a statement of faith in Canton’s future. This campaign reflects that same belief. By supporting this project, you’re investing in more than bricks and mortar—you’re investing in the vibrancy and resilience of downtown Canton.

The theatre’s impact on the local economy cannot be overstated. A revitalized Canton Palace Theatre will bring more visitors downtown, supporting restaurants, hotels, and shops. It will create jobs, attract new talent, and solidify Canton as a cultural hub in Northeast Ohio. Just as the Jaycee’s efforts

breathed new life into the Palace decades ago, this campaign ensures that the theatre continues to fulfill its role as a cornerstone of the community and ensures that this space remains accessible and welcoming to everyone in our community.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF HISTORY

This centennial year is a moment of reflection and celebration. The Canton Palace Theatre is one of the last surviving venues of its kind, home to the mighty Kilgen Pipe Organ—a rare treasure in itself. Imagine the joy of hearing its beautiful melodies fill the theatre as a tribute to this community’s shared success.

As we look ahead, this campaign honors Ink’s legacy by ensuring that the Palace continues to inspire, entertain, and unite for another 100 years. His vision—a theatre created for the people of Canton—guides us still.

JOIN US IN RAISING THE CURTAIN

Together, we can transform the Canton Palace Theatre into a space that reflects the best of what our community has to offer. Your support can make this vision a reality, ensuring that future generations experience the magic of live performance in a space that is accessible, inclusive, and grander than ever.

Help us raise the curtain all the way. With your investment, we can reach our $16.3 million goal and celebrate the theatre’s centennial with a project that will resonate for decades to come. Let’s build on Harry Harper Ink’s legacy and the Canton Jaycees’ spirit of resilience to leave a lasting mark on Canton’s future.

THE SCOTTSDALE LURE OF

The endless skies of blue are interrupted only by cacti rising majestically from the ground, arms reaching skyward, and palm trees, which are often adorned by lights that twinkle when the sun sets. There are vistas of open desert, rising mountains, and even the lush green of the locale’s many golf courses. And, of course, there are the vibrant shopping, dining, art, and event scenes, too.

Scottsdale is a city located in Metro Phoenix in Arizona, which as a whole is nicknamed “The Valley of the Sun” for its more than 330 days of sun each year—one of the reasons the area is a draw for visitors. With few rainy days, it’s easy to plan your daily activities without worry. Yes, though, the summer gets hot. But the rest of the year? Perfection.

Scottsdale is a mix of a resort destination, city, and suburbs, with more open desert the further north you venture. To the south is Downtown Scottsdale—also known as Old Town Scottsdale—which is a mix of old Southwestern charm

(including the legendary cowboy saloon, Rusty Spur Saloon); modern eateries from famed chefs; lots of shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops; the Arts District , which is filled with art galleries; and even tasting rooms from Arizona wineries located along the famed Scottsdale Wine Trail

Nearby is Scottsdale Fashion Square , one of the nation’s premier shopping destinations. While you’ll find many usual retailers there, there are also more than 40 luxury brands, including Christian Louboutin, Bottega Veneta, and Louis Vuitton.

Heading north are open-air shopping destinations Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland Commons , which sit across the street from each other. Take the afternoon or evening to stroll through, exploring the shops, restaurants, and activity destinations such as the indoor mini-golf destination Puttshack . What else is there to see and do? Plenty.

FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING TO GOLF TO SIGHTSEEING, THIS DESTINATION HAS IT ALL

PLAY

Like golf? There are more than 200 golf courses in the Scottsdale area. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, there is a course for you. One of the most popular in the area is the TPC Scottsdale as it is the locale of the WM Phoenix Open, the most-attended golf tournament in the world.

For most of the year, Scottsdale boasts warm temperatures, making spending a day splashing in a local resorts have pool areas that feature fun extras such as water slides, lazy rivers, and even a cooled sand beach. And even if you’re not an on-site guest, you can often purchase a day pass to be on-site through ResortPass.com.

Of course, there’s also plenty of outdoor recreation in Scottsdale. Pinnacle Peak tain to hike (as is the iconic Camelback Mountain, which is located in nearby Phoenix), and the park and trail system spread over 11 miles. Kids love Stillman Railroad Park cles the park and plenty of play areas.

A destination filled with numerous attractions is A Boardwalk , a center that includes OdySea Aquarium , Illusions , and more.

CULTURE

The beauty of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert led famed architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), to build home and desert laboratory, in a mountainside in East Scottsdale. Today, there are daily tours of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and events are offered often.

However, Wright’s architecture isn’t the only art in the area. Beyond the Arts District in Downtown Scottsdale, there is public art all around the city, from sculptures to murals, so definitely keep your eyes open!

There are also museums such as Museum of the West items from the Greater Western region, and the Museum of Contemporary Art

On Thursday evenings, there’s a free public Arts District, where galleries stay open later. Wander the streets and galleries, often against a backdrop of live music and even artist appearances.

NEARBY

While there’s so much to do, see, and experience in Scottsdale proper, there’s also much to see nearby. Make sure to experience the Musical Instrument Museum MIM), which is the world’s only global instrument museum. Botanical Garden features an array of desert plants, and Art Museum has an impressive collection of art. And, of course, the Phoenix Zoo is a perfect place for both kids and adults alike.
