f you watched the Olympics this year and followed Team USA’s Michael Phelps, the death stare that broke the Internet is probably what you’ll remember, along with, of course, his unbelievable medal haul. But what you might have also noticed was circular deep red bruises screaming at you from his back while he glided through the water. “That is massage cupping and it is actually not bruising at all,” says local holistic healing practitioner Emily Brelsford, owner of Revive Therapeutic Massage, Carlsbad. “Cupping can go up to four layers deep to pull the congestion in the connective tissue/fascia, and that’s what makes it so effective – it is pulling up junk (dead blood cells, debris, and toxins) that’s been stuck inside for so many years!” A massage therapist for the past 12 years, Brelsford is Board certified and has been practicing in Carlsbad for a year now. She is a unique holistic professional and one of the few in the area offering the myriad services she specializes in. Massage cupping is an amazing technique that originates from ancient Chinese medicine – the belief that where there is pain, there is congestion, and if it is in the body a long time, it is in the deeper layers of the tissue. Cupping helps pull up all of that to the surface and then eliminate it from the body to clear the tissue. Once the congestion is gone, the pain is gone, something Brelsford has observed in many cases and experienced herself as well. Another treatment is Craniosacral Therapy - spine therapy that helps to open up and release the spine to bring it back into balance. Brelsford stresses, “The spine is also the nervous system and the nervous system registers emotion. So with pain, there is emotion linked. Not only does the spine need to be opened up and rebalanced but also there is emotional content usually from trauma that the body stores that needs releasing.” Craniosacral Therapy is different from chiropractic treatment though. Instead of the massage therapist choosing what they will correct, the body really is the guide. “It is absolutely your body doing all the work and opening where it needs to, in the order it needs to,” emphasizes Brelsford, who strongly believes in customizing treatments for people’s needs, incorporating multiple techniques into the same sessions. An example of this is incorporating hot stones and aromatherapy into a treatment to achieve the ultimate response and calm the nervous system. Myofascial Release, Scar Therapy, Craniosacral Fascial unwinding, Swedish massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Therapy, Reflexology, Lymphatic Drainage, Massage Cupping, and more are part of Brelsford’s expertise bringing in holistic medicine treatments to Carlsbad. “Everyone should be receiving massage as preventive health care. It is great for stress, anxiety, depression, emotional and mental clarity, and simply as a self-maintenance program,” says Brelsford. “My love is working with people, to help them heal, so the more they are educated about holistic healing and experience it, the better!” MassageRevive.com

ver found you had to drive to a yoga class one place, then swimming elsewhere and out to the park for a quick run? Now you don’t have to! Tri-City Wellness Center takes care of all your fitness needs under one roof…and it’s right here in Carlsbad. As the city’s local community club, Tri-City Wellness Center provides a welcoming environment with expert support for your total wellbeing. We are talking a 58,000 square foot fitness center featuring over 130 group fitness classes a week, a full-service spa, executive-style locker rooms, indoor lap pools, and more. A common misconception is that the wellness center is only for the clients at Tri-City Medical Center, which is attached to the health club, but far from it! Membership is open to all. They even offer a one-day free pass so you can visit to experience the venue and all it has to offer. Young adults, professionals, families with kids and teenagers, can all be seen enjoying the amenities of this amazing local community club. Their Kidz-in-Motion childcare program allows you to enjoy your workout while the kids (ages 6 months – 12 years) are in good hands. Attend classes knowing that a professional staff dedicated to attentive and interactive care is providing a safe and secure environment for your child. Every effort is made to focus on the abilities and preferences of each child resulting in a fun and fulfilling experience. for the month, supported by a huge, state-of-the-art machine and free-weight center…makes staying consistent with your fitness routine no problem at all! They also offer fun cooking classes, spin classes and cutting edge equipment on the exercise floors. At the core of their approach is an exclusive program called the Health Creation Process. It is complimentary to all members and helps establish personalized, progressive goals and fitness programming based on your vision. Another aspect that many are unaware of is that Tri-City Wellness Center’s HydroWorx 2000 is the only one of its kind open to the public in all of Southern California, bringing you the most advanced aquatic therapy right in your own backyard! The power of water in physical rehabilitation is a well-known fact and the HydroWorx 2000 harnesses that power for your benefit. Water supports the body by providing low or no impact resistance that helps improve mobility, strength, and function. The HydroWorx 2000 uses the buoyancy and natural resistance of water to improve range of motion, strengthen muscles, improve balance, decrease pain levels, and allows for exercise at one’s own comfort level. Clearly, the focus here is on improving the health of the community through innovative programming and continuous education for members. CONCIERGE MEDICINE:

the doctor is in ARTICLE LAUREN BECKER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Y

ou’ve heard the myth of the doctor who is reachable at any time. The one who knows patients and their families, their medical histories, their unique medical needs. The one who doesn’t throw prescriptions at isolated symptoms. The one who is attentive to individual needs and committed to preventive care. Good news: this doctor exists! Welcome to the age of concierge medicine. Concierge physicians provide personalized, accessible medical care to a select group of patients who pay premiums beyond what they pay for insurance, including co-pays and deductibles. And yes, they even make house calls. Though this type of boutique care is not an entirely new concept, the concierge practice has become more prevalent as the country’s system of healthcare has become more impersonal and difficult to maneuver than ever. San Diego is home to a growing number of concierge physicians who have restructured their medical practices to meet the demands of patients who want access and time, and are willing to pay for it. Stuart Kipper, M.D., an internal medicine physician in Encinitas, has treated patients in North County San Diego for more than 25 years. In 1990, he founded Medical Group of North County (MGNC), which went on to become one of the largest private medical practices in the area. Approximately 15 years ago, in response to patient requests for more individualized attention, Dr. Kipper added a concierge component to his own practice within the large group. In 2009, he left MGNC to dedicate himself fully to the personalized care of his patients, many of whom followed him to his new practice. “I felt it was time to leave because talking about money became a drag,” Dr. Kipper says. “Being a doctor had become more of a business than a commitment to patient care. The way I practice now allows us all to win.” Dr. Kipper limits his patient base to no more than 400. This allows him to provide time, access, and follow-up, which are all important for making 20

Carlsbad Lifestyle | October 2016

patients feel comfortable, earning him their trust. He limits the number of patient office visits to 10 to 14 per day so that he may spend at least half an hour with each patient, giving them his full attention. “I know them and they know me. That’s how you learn to trust someone.” And that trust and personal attention has saved lives. James Betz, a businessman based in Las Vegas, has been a devoted patient of Dr. Kipper’s since the 1980s, following him from the large medical group to his small concierge practice. Betz believes that Dr. Kipper’s attention to his family history of prostate cancer led to his own early diagnosis from which he has made a full recovery. “Stuart is the epitome of what a concierge doctor should be. He really takes the time to get to know you and has a knack for being able to diagnose issues, even over the phone, because he listens.” Betz’s wife and children are also patients of Dr. Kipper’s. Prospective patients begin with a consultation during which Dr. Kipper takes an extensive medical history. He explains how his office, which includes him and three medical assistants, handles everything from obtaining prior authorizations to coordinating specialist care to drawing blood for labs to accounting. Dr. Kipper’s goal and purpose is to make it as convenient and comfortable for patients to receive quality medical care as possible. After the initial visit, his office schedules follow-up visits so that prospective patients have time to consider whether this type of service suits their needs. Dr. Kipper, a practicing Buddhist, is grateful for the opportunity to connect with his patients on a deeper level. “Currently, I am working with a family that is dealing with an elderly member who is dying. I spend about four hours a week with them, guiding them on a dignified death journey. The medical part is easy. It’s the emotional part – figuring out how I can incorporate what I know and can impart to help my patients as human beings that makes it worth it." StuartBKipperMD.com

THE REEL PITCH reels in ARTICLE SHANNON BARR | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

N

orth County San Diego is brimming with talented TV and film scriptwriters who aspire to reach the big screen. Bringing Hollywood vibes to the area, the La Costa Film Festival is hosting its annual The Reel Pitch event to support such talent. Founded in 2012 by Michael and Ruby Callihan, the La Costa Film Festival is a four-day extravaganza featuring 48 films screened in three unique venues. In addition to The Reel Pitch, the festival holds other special events like ‘Sip & Savor’, where guests can enjoy local cuisine and drinks before the red carpet event.

"

The Reel Pitch was born as kind of a 'Shark Tank' for filmmakers

"

- Michael Callihan

The Reel Pitch was developed to bring a new opportunity to talented scriptwriters, providing exclusive access to discuss and improve their ideas with successful individuals in the film industry. A VIP celebrity prepanel selects the top 10 from films submitted by local writers. The top contestants will have five minutes to pitch their film in front of a live audience and VIP studio executives, followed by a three-minute Q&A session. Last year’s panel included television director/producer and Co-Chairman of Mandalay Sports Media Mike Tollin, who will once again curate this year’s event. Also present last year was film producer Cash Warren and producer, film executive, and 22

Carlsbad Lifestyle | October 2016

Head of Production at STX Entertainment Cathy Schulman. “It was a trio of heavy hitters, so simply the opportunity to meet them and present ourselves as storytellers in a rather small and intimate setting was very valuable,” says last year’s finalist Jared Hillman. The winner of The Reel Pitch receives an exclusive meeting with film judges to further discuss and develop their story, while learning how to best network and improve their story pitch for potential studio executives they may present their ideas in front of. Last year’s winner was Caitlin Reed, who works in production at Del Mar TV. Her winning story pitch was about a girl who is completely forgotten about as soon as the person conversing with her looks away. After speaking with directors from the panel, they decided her script would work best as a pilot TV series. Reed’s ultimate goal is for her script to become a TV show with three seasons. “That would be the ideal trajectory for this story. Right now, it’s been a really great learning process. I have learned a lot about the development process and screen writing in general. Even if this doesn’t go anywhere, I am going to be able to take what I learn from this and translate it to other scripts I write.” This year, the event will be held on Saturday, October 15th. “The Reel Pitch was born as kind of a ‘Shark Tank’ for filmmakers,” says Michael Callihan. “It’s that same concept, where you have people who can actually do something for you, right there listening to you. They’ll help move participants on to the next step or move them into an entirely different direction; but they help them achieve their dreams!” LaCostaFilmFestival.org

id you know the mouth is a window into the health of the body? It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. Researchers have also found that periodontitis (the advanced form of periodontal disease that can cause tooth loss) is linked with other health problems like cardiovascular disease, stroke, and bacterial pneumonia. Managing dental health is especially important for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as the changing hormone levels that occur with pregnancy can exacerbate some dental problems. As such, dentists and doctors encourage their patients to view proper dental care as an integral component of maintaining overall wellness. And with that framework at the forefront of everything they do, Dr. Stephen Dankworth and Dr. Kimberly Corrigan-Dankworth, owners of La Costa Dental Excellence, have been helping the people of Carlsbad and beyond live their healthiest lives complete with their best, most beautiful smiles for over 20 years.

Carlsbad Lifestyle | October 2016

Asked to sum up what made La Costa Dental Excellence so special, they say, “We are masters in the art of dentistry. When we are at work, it feels like play and we pursue excellence in everything we do…we use the best products and technology available and challenge ourselves to always learn from the best.” But they didn’t begin as masters; their journeys into dentistry began early. Dr. Kim was inspired by having “the sweetest dentist growing up” who encouraged her to follow in his footsteps. Dr. Stephen mentions his interest in dentistry began when, “I had a terrible bicycle accident when I was young and had many appointments to fix my teeth.” Continually inspired to develop their craft, the Dankworths practice ongoing learning; as fellows at symposiums as well as members of multiple associations which allow them to stay abreast of the latest information and advances. Dentistry is a field that keeps evolving and in the last few decades alone, the Carlsbad based dentists have started utilizing advances

like digital imaging and in office CBCT scans, vastly improved porcelain that is more beautiful and stronger than ever, braces that can be comprised of clear plastic instead of rigid metal wire, advanced topical rinses that can change the pH (measure of acidity or alkalinity) of the mouth to better protect patients from decay and gum disease, and most importantly, ever advancing considerations for how the "mouthbody" connection contributes to overall health. When asked what patients need to do everyday, they share, “Do everything you can to keep your smile healthy, and smile a lot, it makes for good living!” LaCostaDentalExcellence.com

Hope &

Happiness after cancer PACIFIC CANCER FITNESS ARTICLE CLAUDIA PIEPENBURG PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN WEBSTER

T

he quality of life of cancer patients and survivors of any type of cancer is not often discussed as much as the devastation of hearing the diagnosis and dealing with the medical processes involved. But one breast cancer survivor right here in Carlsbad realized the need to address that head on and is working to change the current mindset with her efforts. Meet Susan Webster, founder of Pacific Cancer Fitness (PCF) and the brainchild behind the stress-free, non-threatening and supportive environment created at Tri City Wellness Center for patients post surgery, either undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation as well as those who’ve finished treatment. “When you hear the word cancer…it is overwhelming. So we focus on helping people look at their situation in smaller bits,” says Webster, explaining why she created the non-profit three years ago. When Susan realized she was unaware acupuncture was available to her as a way to relieve nausea symptoms from her chemotherapy, she wanted to educate others as well. It motivated her to create an organization that would help cancer patients understand that they have options. “Options and knowledge that are credible lead to power. Power leads to hope. In group settings like we have here at PCF, people feel more of a sense of hope.” 30

A certified Cancer Exercise Trainer, Yoga instructor and Life Coach, Webster is the primary instructor. She has interns and other instructors that are students in kinesiology from UCSD, CSSM, and Azusa Pacific assisting her at PCF. Because exercise has been proven to help relieve the fatigue, weight gain and loss of balance that often accompanies cancer treatment, PCF offers weekly yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes, low-impact regimens that focus on mental as well as physical healing and exercise and strength training (twice a week). “Most of our patients are physician-referred but anyone interested can contact us as most physicians are more than happy to refer their patients to a wellness program at Tri City Wellness Center.” The physicians’ input provides information to tailor the program to each client’s needs to keep them safe and offer more options. PCF membership costs $80 a month but no one is ever turned away due to lack of financial resources. It is in the group settings that the patients feel comfortable in sharing their concerns, fears, hopes and dreams. “That’s why I started the bucket list group. Even people who don’t have cancer have no idea how long they have,” Webster says. Group members are encouraged to travel, engage with the community, enjoy activities they love and the group supports and motivates them to accomplish what they set their sights on. “We’re here to teach group members how to be a better patient. In our support groups, we tell patients to write up a list of questions and not leave until the doctor has answered them. We teach them that they have to do the work…they have to be advocates for themselves.” Webster is the face of advocacy for cancer survivors in the gap between prevention and cure. While she leads the way for PCF’s operations and programs, she is always happy to welcome volunteers to move the group’s mission forward. Grant writing, fun activities (like stand up paddling), expert speakers, and assistance with social media are high on their list of needs. Fundraisers like their Candlelight Yoga and Aloha Yoga at Tri City Wellness Center, Señor Grubbys Happy Hour in Carlsbad Village, and the Spring Fling Shopping event help spread awareness and educate the community on the meaningful work accomplished by this local nonprofit. Chronic illness can be an isolating experience. Webster is working hard to fight that mindset, the stigma that often accompanies the diagnosis. “We want people to understand that they’re not alone and there is hope. They just got a head’s up with a cancer diagnosis as to how fragile life can be. We want them to live a healthy life working on fulfilling their dreams. We focus on their health and wellness, that’s the positive thing to do.” PacificCancerFitness.org October 2016 | Carlsbad Lifestyle

COMING BACK TO LEAD THE CITY FORWARD

Crawford with Fire Chief Mike Davis

ARTICLE NATALIE NEECE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“M

y favorite things about Carlsbad are the family friendly environment, thoughtful community and service-oriented city,” reCrawford with Library & Cultural marks Carlsbad City Manager Arts Director Heather Pizzuto Kevin Crawford. Longtime residents of the city know those words are not spoken by a stranger! Crawford served the Carlsbad and San Diego County communities prior to his current position as City Manager. For 30 years, he was employed by the San Diego County fire service, first serving in Poway and then Carlsbad, where he was Fire Chief for 12 years. During this time, he partnered with neighboring cities and communities to develop regional solutions to problems faced by emergency service agencies. In addition to his role as Fire Chief, Crawford provided leadership roles in fighting some of the region’s biggest wildfires. He also helped on-site, in command responsibilities, in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks in New York and Hurricane Katrina. Additionally, he served on the City of Carlsbad’s leadership team, working closely with the city manager, city attorney and city department heads to help guide day-to-day operations of the city. Crawford managed key city priorities and served in an acting capacity when the city manager was unavailable, and, in fact, temporarily served as city manager in late 2013. It was Crawford’s recruitment as President and CEO of United Way of San Diego that took him away from Carlsbad in 2014. While there, he spearheaded the nonprofit’s efforts to team with businesses, governments, other nonprofit organizations and communities to find solutions to the region’s complex problems. His strong leadership skills and passion for helping others, as well as the extraordinary impact he had made in Carlsbad already, made Crawford the forerunner in the national search for City Manager. Here, his most important role is operations, implementing the Council’s policies, and setting directions for the City's service levels. His main responsibility is to deliver those service levels and manage the affairs of the City. These services include areas where people work, live and play. No doubt then, that he counts as one of the most recent accomplishments since he

returned to Carlsbad as City Manager, the remodeling of the Georgina Cole and Carlsbad City libraries. “Our renovated libraries make a great space for exploration. We received positive feedback about the projects and the grand openings were wonderful community building events." Community coalitions are Crawford’s specialty. Take, for instance, the recent support he extended the La Costa Film Festival, hosting the kick-off party with his wife Jolane at their La Costa home. “The event is a centerpiece for the cultural environment in Carlsbad and North County. It draws the community together,” he says, of the four-day film extravaganza at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa. Crawford strongly believes that if you have the ability to help others, you should. It is this philanthropic spirit that has influenced his commitment with nonprofits and to the community, fuelling a collaborative leadership style, management excellence and strong ethics. With Kevin Crawford as our new City Manager at the helm, its exciting times in Carlsbad!
