or one reason or another, I have spent much of my life living in resort communities. Never have I experienced such an embracing beauty like Carlsbad. The complete physical, cultural and spiritual atmosphere here is bar none.
The poignant splendor of the landscapes and architecture, and all that encompasses the grandeur and thrill of the ocean fills my soul daily. However, as impressive an impact that these compel, I believe the greatest gift Carlsbad has to offer, is its people. As I move about the city in business and personal endeavors, the ambiance is one of joy. The people of Carlsbad are happy, kind, thoughtful, healthy and intelligent. All of this without pretense and airs…very refreshing. How do you embody the soul of Carlsbad within a simple media? A humbling, yet exciting challenge lies ahead. I am grateful and overwhelmed by the warm welcome that Carlsbad Lifestyle has received. Thank you new partners for your support and encouragement. To my new family, the community of Carlsbad, it is my deepest desire to capture the unique and very special character of this precious town and bring it to you monthly, in a beautiful, intelligent and inspiring presentation. It is my honor and privilege to present to you our inaugural edition of Carlsbad Lifestyle. Let the journey begin…

Carlsbad Lifestyle | May 2016
n all the 5-star reviews of the La Costa Coffee Roasting shop, nestled in the inward facing corner of the Plaza Paseo Real, one word sticks out: “retro.” If you recall and miss the days when having a cup of coffee was more about a great roast, great company, and a relaxing atmosphere rather than finding the perfect pour over, then this coffee roasting house may just be the best contemporary “retro” shop around. Ironically, the La Costa Coffee Roasting location wasn’t meant to be a destination shop. In the early 1990s, owner Doug Novak, a second-generation coffee shop purveyor, opened the El Camino Real location to roast for the family’s original location [then named The Coffee Merchant]. In doing so, he unknowingly planted a seed for what would become a fixture within the community not just as a roaster, but also as a place for gathering and friendship. Novak’s dedication to coffee roasting is evident in his sourcing of the beans as well as his honing of the roasting process itself. Sourcing beans is based on creating relationships with brokers from around the world. As an artisan small batch boutique roaster, his advantage is that he is privy to that “small one-off” harvest that a big
box seller has no use for. With in-house roasting six days a week, Novak is able to roast as much or as little as he procures. His coffee is fresh, and that, more than fancy science lab inspired paraphernalia, is what makes a great cup of coffee. When asked what his favorite coffee is, his response, “It’s whatever is seasonal and fresh,” speaks to his desire to provide his clientele with an authentic coffee experience that is dependent on quality of the coffee rather than trends. His roasting timeline lays out in weeks rather than the months often stamped on pre-packaged coffee beans. His bestseller? “A Cup of Happiness.” The clientele spill out onto the large patio space: a mother reading to her son, two elderly ladies chatting, a business meeting. With live music on the weekends and one of the first Wi-Fi hotspots in the area, La Costa Coffee Roasting is a “stop and stay.” While many of his patrons are regulars, Novak says when he roasts on busy holidays, the smell of roasting coffee wafting
out the doors attracts window shoppers curious to see roasting in action. Novak’s parents were both schoolteachers and longtime Carlsbad residents. As a fixture in the community, La Costa Coffee Roasting supports local schools and events, and has local artists’ work on its walls. Doug enjoys teaching in his own way, sharing his knowledge of coffee and roasting with whomever is interested. No coffee house would be complete without tea and sweet treats and La Costa Coffee Roasting has some of the best. The bestsellers are baked in-house and judging from the constantly refilling shelves, the quiche, the cookies and muffins, including fabulous gluten-free varieties, may just rival the popularity of the coffee. If coffee allows you to “vicariously travel the world,” then La Costa Coffee Roasting is the perfect destination holiday, be it for your daily wake-up ritual or for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. MAN ABOUT TOWN:
JR Phillips
Purpose. Vision. Community.
ARTICLE TONYA O' DELL | PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKIE ACHARTZ 18
Carlsbad Lifestyle | May 2016
A
nother gorgeous morning after an overnight drizzle, another day living in paradise. I am not the only one who can attest to the fact that Carlsbad is a true gem. JR Phillips, along with his wife Marie and three children, has called the city home for the past 19 years. At his family residence, I am greeted warmly while JR is finishing up a phone call. Simply dressed in jeans and sneakers, his smile as relaxed as his attire, we sat outside in the sunshine to chat. JR shares he has never been happier, attributing this to a valued and purposeful life, which he has found living in Carlsbad. A good man puts his parents, children and wife on a pedestal, and JR jumps at the opportunity to rave about his family, friends and Carlsbad itself. He knows that “location, location, location,” is made desirable not simply for geographical positioning alone, but also as a direct reflection of a community’s members and the pride they feel for their town. JR wears many hats when it comes to the community - as a member of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Education and Government Affairs Committees, being a part of the Senior’s Helping Hands projects, as a member of the Hi-Noon Rotary Club, as the Co-Chair for the Hi-Noon Rotary’s Annual Brew Fest (which has been set officially for September 10th 2016 at Holiday Party), and as a Board Member of The Carlsbad Educational Foundation. Yet, he is also part of the Dad’s Club for AOE PTA and always makes time for his kids’ sporting events, dance, the customary Carlsbad beach days with the family, his fellow community members - their needs, and, of course, his grateful clients, whose calls he always answers. Along with being a hands-on, do-anything-for-his-kids kinda guy, being an active member of the community and directly involved with making a positive impact are important to JR. The way he describes his clients and their homes, “deals” as others in the industry might say, is more about forming personal and highly valued relationships. “It’s a shame,” JR reflects, that there is a change in the real estate industry amongst his peers of, “agents only texting nowadays. I want to talk to someone sometimes and I know that goes both ways. I may call with one question, but then I have three more and so on.” Accountability is one of the most important traits a man can have according to JR. And you understand that better, learning about JR and his closeness to his dad, Mervin John Phillips Sr., a Midwestern blue-collar guy with an iron work ethic as young JR was growing up. From the time JR learned how to weld at age 8, to running his own lawn mowing business, JR learned from his father to take responsibility for his actions and the meaning behind the statement, “A job has value”. “I value and respect the people I work for, and am always cognizant of the fiduciary and emotional responsibility placed upon me. Every one of my relationships is unique and treasured. Even with clients that I have worked with multiple times, no two properties are the same. This is one aspect that makes my work different every day. How can I help best is a question that I am constantly refocusing on.” In addition to his professional knack for matchmaking in real estate, JR completed the Carlsbad Citizens Academy in 2010. It launched a strong desire to give back and become more involved. JR has come to find greater purpose, wider vision and means to satisfy
his naturally inquisitive and helpful nature. “I would recommend every single person living in Carlsbad goes through the Citizens Academy, it would make for an even stronger, more aware and solidified community.” TheJRPhillipsGroup.com “I value and respect the people I work for," says JR, responding to clients.

E A DIFFERENCE MAKE
Advice to Parents of Athletes
I
remember the first time I watched passively as my child failed. My six-year-old son was on the pitcher’s mound. The only training he
had until that moment was a ten-minute pep talk from his coach and a few practice throws before the game. I remember how small and eager he looked. The air was still. My mouth twitched involuntarily from the stress. A few minutes later, I went to my car to practice my Lamaze deep breathing. I couldn’t bear to watch him fail. After the game, I tried to encourage him through his tears. Yet, I too
felt the disappointment deeply, wanting so much for him to succeed. I

gave him a pat on the back, and a hearty “You’ll do better next time!” When really, I didn’t believe it. I thought of all the practicing we could do during the week. How his dad and I could teach him how to hit the strike zone. We could protect him from failing like that ever again. Is the desire to see our children to succeed wrong? I don’t think
so. Yet, a big problem with youth sports is the parents. How parents behave towards their children in sports impacts their kids as they become young adults, and beyond.
REAL VS. PERCEIVED BENEFITS OF SPORTS
A friend of mine recently told me that her son is about to start high
school. She let him know that he had to try out for a team. She thought it was the best way for him to have a ready-made tribe as he tries to navigate a complicated social system. Added to that is the benefit of sports in developing his leadership skills, helping him to set and work towards goals, nurturing a respect for authority, physical activity and, of course, healthy competition. Those are all real benefits parents cite for encouraging their kids to play sports, but none of them are true for the kids. The number one reason kids want to play sports is fun. In a 2005 study by Notre Dame University, it was found that 70% of kids quit sports by the age of 13. Why? Because sports isn’t fun anymore.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAILURE
If we take an honest look at how we, as parents, may have
contributed
to
the
fallout of youth sports, we become better parents. The first place to start is failure. We do a great job at celebrating the wins in sport, being the cheering parent from the stand, giving the whistles and
“Genuine, healthy self-esteem develops when caring adults identify children’s strength but also allow them the satisfaction that only comes from trying and failing. Effort, failure and eventual triumph build great emerging adults.” - Tim Elmore, author of 12 Huge Mistakes Parents can Avoid
pats on the back. Yet, when it’s a loss, many of us struggle with how not to lose our composure. The greatest lessons in life are learned through failure. It is through failure that our kids become motivated to persevere and learn to succeed. A University of Indiana soccer player, Paul “Whitey” Kapsalis writes in his book, To Chase A Dream, how he was told by the coach that he could never play for the team. Every year. For four years. “Whitey, you just are not good enough,” the coach told him. This lit the fire for Whitey to persevere. With the support of his parents, he worked harder each year than the year before. He did not give up. He had a dream and credits his parents’ gentle encouragement as one of the main reasons he never gave up. As parents, we can let our children work out failure for themselves. Fortunately, my husband and I held back from trying to control the situation after my son failed at pitching. We let our son respond to the situation. He decided on his own to practice his pitching and asked his dad to help. He learned how to work out his failure. We saw him get less emotional about a loss, persevere and strategize on how to improve because he wanted to. And it was fun! That time in Little League was such a fruitful period in his development into a young man. We, as his parents, learned to listen, not take over as the coach and to gently encourage him to get back up and in the game. The next time my son stepped on the mound, he learned to overcome failure, just by showing up and trying again. He is now close to 30-years-old, chasing bigger dreams, and we all know his time in youth sport played a huge role in making him who he is today. Do you want to discover tools to navigate through and alongside your child and their sport? Do you know the most important words you can say to your child on and off the field? Are you aware of the pitfalls to avoid? Do you want to be part of the ongoing conversation with other parents? If you said yes to any of these questions, you can learn how to get involved with Parents of Athletes in North County. Be a difference maker in your athlete’s life!

Financial Buzz
Alice in Wander-land ARTICLE SEAN BARRETT
A
s children, we all heard the story or watched the movie Alice in Wonderland. Alice was walking down a path and reached the forest where there was a big tree covered in signs pointing to different forks in the road, and she stopped in her tracks, faced with a big decision. “Which way should I go?” she said, rhetorically speaking. The Cheshire cat immediately appeared in the tree and replied, “Where are you headed, my Dear?” Alice replied, “I really don’t know.” At this, the cat provided some rather profound advice for a children’s movie: “Then it really doesn’t matter which path you take!” I frequently start my financial planning roadmap session with this story and then ask my clients - how does this story relate to how you make financial decisions? In other words, do you make decisions in life like Alice in Wonderland? Just flip a coin or pick a path and move on? The majority of my clients will eventually admit that is pretty much it. They just follow their gut or flip a coin and choose a path, wandering through life, oblivious to the outcomes. Now imagine that a friend offers to fly Alice overhead in a hot air balloon, showing her where each path leads. With someone anticipating all possible outcomes, uncertainty and fear are replaced with confidence and assurance. Financial planning is that bird’s eye view of the paths before you, from beginning to end. The primary benefit for those who complete the financial planning process is they are able to make more informed decisions about their life. I spent five years in the Navy, after college, and part of that time was on a nuclear submarine, the USS Tinosa (SSN-606). When we went to sea, it was nothing like a holiday cruise! We frequently stayed submerged for two months or more. One of my first questions for the Captain on my first cruise was, “Do we know where we are going? What happens if we 22
Carlsbad Lifestyle | May 2016
run into a mountain at the bottom of the ocean?” The Captain assured me that the Navigator knew what he was doing, so I learned to trust in the Navigator to make sure we ended up where we wanted. When I decided to become a financial planner, it was a logical career choice for me. I believe we are all a product of the sum of our experiences over time. After working with hundreds of clients over the years, I have seen some patterns in their behavior. I was always interested in how people make financial decisions about their future. In the investment world, this is called behavioral finance. It’s a tool for predicting how investors will behave in different circumstances. For example, studies show that the fear of loss is many times more powerful than the thrill of gains. Go figure! Why is this important and what do investor behaviors have to do with financial planning? Look up the term “Dalbar Study” online and see what 30 years of research has shown about the impact of emotions on investment behavior and performance. What has history taught us about even the very ‘best’ market timers? They will get it wrong more often than they will get it right! If clients tend to make their financial choices by the seat of their pants, does it not stand to reason that if they make more informed decisions, they will tend to achieve better outcomes in life? Let me ask you a question: Do you have somebody who knows what they are doing, helping you navigate your way through life? Or are you making choices at each fork in the road like Alice in Wander-land? Sean Barrett is Principal and Founder of Cornerstone Wealth Advisors. He can be reached at CWAInvestors.com

here are five key pillars to health, but most of us only focus on a few. Then we wonder why we have trouble
losing weight, have low energy, frequent colds, too much stress, poorly behaved children, body pains, etc. We have to remember that health is like a building, and if one of the pillars is not strong, your health will suffer. In no particular order, the five pillars of health are: 1) Good Nutrition: There are many diets and lots of misin-
formation floating around so here is what to look for: Eat real food, organic when possible. Eat more vegetables and cut out the sugar. 2) Positive Mental Attitude: Changing the damaging and
negative story we tell ourselves on a daily basis is hugely healthy and health promoting.

on a regular basis. The reason for this is “sedentary inertia.” Bodies in motion, stay in motion and those at rest, stay at rest. 4) Sleep: We rebuild tissues, muscle, and recharge the
brain during sleep, so make it a priority. Set a bedtime and get at least 7.5-9 hours of sleep per night. 5) Take care of your spine and nervous system: Our nerve
system controls every system in our body. If it isn’t working, you aren’t working. Most of us treat our spines like our health, only giving it attention when we have problems with it. This is a bad idea because it will lose function over time, each small injury and postural stress adding up until we have a major breakdown. Sometimes this shows up as pain, sometimes as decreased immunity, and more often than people realize, it shows up as decreased function that will lead to all sorts of health problems. This is why some of the most exciting and promising fields of research involve spine and nerve system function. A common objection I hear to people seeking out a chiropractor is that you will ‘get addicted’ or “they always want you to keep coming”. Feeling good is addicting so in that sense they are right. Much like exercise and sleep can be addicting. We are not static and neither is our health. We have to practice healthy habits and maintain our health over time, which is why chiropractic isn’t just for the injury or pain. At New Wave Chiropractic Center in Carlsbad, we check and adjust infants, adults, and everyone in between. The adjustments are tailored to the body type so a newborn baby does not get the same force or care as a growing child or an adult. We help patients with a wide variety of issues but we specialize in migraines, joint dysfunction, and other problems. Keep your spine and nerve system working well and you will have a lifetime of good health with minimal health challenges. Having a chiropractor on your health team will be essential in maintaining spine and nerve function over the year, and keeping you and your family the picture of health. NewWaveCarlsbad.com 24

W
ith summer right around the corner, beautiful “light on the palate” wines that will pair beautifully with all your barbeques and beach days are on their way. The first thing to remember while enjoying wine is that this is your journey. Begin to understand what it is you like about a wine. Nuances that you may be drawn to or want to stay away from such as acidity, tannins, fruit, etc. The good news here is the more you taste, the more discerning and understanding of your own palate you will become. People are often apprehensive when they first dive into the world of wine. Don’t be. It is important to remember that everyone has their own unique palate and that is what makes wine so fun! There are SO many wonderful varietals, so many ways in which wines are made and so many regions to choose from. Wine is about your experience, so follow your own palate and truly enjoy the journey. WHITES:
•Borgo Maragliano Sparkling Brut Chardonnay from Italy. This sparkling is 100% Chardonnay. Its bright straw-yellow color precedes a marked and delicate aroma. It offers an intense, deep and harmonious taste. Best paired with grilled fish and cheeses that offer delicate flavors and creamy texture. •Meyer Family Cellars Rose from Yorkville Highlands, Mendocino County, CA. This beautiful wine is 100% Syrah with only 368 cases produced. It has notes of pink grapefruit and a twist of lemon that gives way to strawberry rhubarb tart and fresh raspberries. Best paired with light salads, seafood, raw and lightly cooked shellfish as well as grilled fish and goat cheeses. •Scarbolo Pinot Grigio from Italy, another small production wine. The aromas are of golden delicious apples and honey with an elegant mineral undertone that harmonizes with its generous structure and balance. A perfect wine to serve as an aperitif or to pair with seafood appetizers, poultry and fish dishes. REDS:
•Rozak Pinot Noir Gold Coast Vineyard. With only 200 cases made, this little beauty has spice, cherry, earth and herbs with a perceptive yet approachable acid profile. Undefined and unfiltered. Best paired with roasted pork tenderloin, oven baked salmon or roasted mushrooms with herbs. •Torre De Ona Finca San Martin Crianza from Spain. This wine is 100% tempranillo and boasts some wonderful notes of strawberries and red currants against a balsamic, aniseed, liquorice and cedar background. Best paired with Spanish dishes, especially lamb and pork with red peppers, pimenton, garlic and saffron. RELM Wine & Beer Bistro will have these wine selections and many others available to enjoy by the flight, the glass or by the bottle. RELM also offers many homemade dishes to accompany wine selections. RELM is an acronym for Relax, Enjoy, Laugh and More and carries boutique, small production, hard to find affordable wines, as well as local craft beers and great noshing options. Parting Thoughts
Bird on a Wire WORDS KENDRA MATHEWSON
O
ne of my dear friends is a painter who sees the world through her amazing artist eyes. When she was the newbie in our neighborhood, her heart was sensitive to how to integrate her family into the community. Driving one day she noticed how birds perched on a telephone wire seemed to choose when to gather, and who to pause with. As she watched the birds sit, and then come and go, those birds spoke to her of how we create community, who we keep counsel with, and even the dynamic nature of the process. She had moved in down the street, and it was my love of her work that initially drew us together. We shared a moment of connection on my front porch steps, and lingered like the birds chatting on the telephone wire, before we flew off back to our hectic lives. Over the years, through working on house projects, painting together, building a club, learning new skills together, cooking meals together, playing cards as couples, we’d pause from the “flights” our lives demanded (me flying around in my minivan and she in her Mini Cooper) to sit like those birds on a wire and talk over tea. This is how we became friends. That is community. That is how community begins and how it grows. These one-on-one connections expand and extend and become a beautiful web of interconnectedness. Through words, stories, shared experiences and common interests, we find inspiration to create our communities. My friend’s keen observations became the main theme of a series that has become her signature. The beauty of her Birds on a Wire series, and her reflections on community, have inspired me to embrace and celebrate more the important place it has in our lives. We live in such an individualistic society that our personal empowerment sometimes overshadows the significance of our need for each other.

Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Because the people are who ignite an idea, imagine a future, share an event, take the bull by the horns, see a need and fill it, spread the word about a new business, open their home to new families, bring a meal when there’s an illness, invest in a neighbor or believe in a student, give witness to struggles and celebrate successes. Our magazine is your “wire.” Let us pause to read the stories that have been inspired by our community, to drink in the beautiful photographs that paint the story of us. Email your editor and publisher, or better yet reach out and enjoy a cup of coffee together. Let us stop here in the pages of our publication each month and celebrate like birds on a wire, before we fly off back to our busy lives. You inspire us.
