Giving Back
SEPTEMBER 2016
G
iving Back suggests we have something to give in the first place. How wonderful that each one of us, regardless of our financial, physical or emotional wealth, has something to give. Whether a smile, a hand up, a meal, a hug, a kind word…we all have unique ways to bless others. Please join Carlsbad Lifestyle in celebrating the many generous hearts of this community. In our September issue, we have captured some wonderful examples of friendliness and generosity. Truly, our community is set apart by its willingness to give back. Carlsbad is so unique in its desire to reach out and support the less fortunate, our beautiful scenery, our children and our animals, that we have “Kindness Meters” to help! Thank you Carlton Lund for setting the bar on Giving Back. I hope you are all inspired by the story of our very own General of Good Will. I once associated the Assistance League with a Thrift Shop alone. Au contraire… wait till you read how this amazing 25-year-old organization puts hands, feet and hearts behind their banner of “Assistance”. Kindness must extend to our loyal and unconditionally loving animals as well. Discover how Animal House Pet Care, not only cares for our pets when we are away, but will help guide us to be the very best pet owner possible. Giving back to our arts inspires enlightenment as well as educational opportunity for the gifted to pursue their dreams. Enjoy this first of two looks into our very own La Costa Film Festival and how they provide our community with an extraordinary 4-day event, as well as support a vision to assist students of film-making year round. Throughout the Carlsbad Lifestyle issues, we have and will continue to highlight our community’s numerous non-profits and kindness ambassadors. This month, we give you a mere glimpse of the myriad of opportunities we all have to take advantage of the excellent organizations within our community’s borders. All organizations need financial donations and we thank all of you for your generous giving. However, I encourage all of us to reach out to someone today, lend a hand, comfort a weary soul, volunteer, bring a smile…in doing so our reward will be ten-fold. As we wrap up Summer and enter into the beauty and serenity of Fall, I wish you all a full heart, strength to carry your responsibilities and love enough to give back.

4TH ANNUAL LA COSTA FILM FESTIVAL: BRINGING HOLLYWOOD TO THE BEACH
I
ARTICLE SHANNON BARR | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS BRAKE
f you ask what local residents think of Carlsbad, chances are they’ll attest to the beautiful coast and high quality of life. However, about four years ago, some residents noticed a lack of rich art and cultural opportunities. Bringing entertainment, arts, and culture to the community, the La Costa Film Festival was born. The annual four-day film festival was founded in 2012 by Michael and Ruby Callihan, who both worked in the mortgage industry and had no previous film experience. At first, they were surprised by the large number of factors involved in running a film festival. However, the support of the Carlsbad community soon catapulted the festival’s success. “Every time we ran into a roadblock, we met people who had a tremendous background in film, with connections to Hollywood,” says Michael. “We found there’s a wealth of talent in North County that was looking for the same way to connect to Hollywood.” The festival partners with the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, which maintains a historic and mystical connection to Hollywood; it used to be a top getaway spot for the Hollywood in-crowd. The festival’s three venues—the Center Court at Omni La Costa, Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas, and The Ruby G. Schulman Theater—each offer an intimate and unique experience for attendees. Another major partner is Mandalay Sports Media (MSM), which helps bring in celebrities and panelists. Last year’s celebrities included Andy Garcia and Ed Harris. They also hold the “Reel Pitch” program, in which a celebrity prepanel selects the top 10 short films submitted, to be presented in front of studio executives and attendees on Saturday of the event. The winner has an opportunity to get film experts editing their pitch and the potential to write a real script for Hollywood. As a nonprofit organization, La Costa Dreams, Inc. operates the festival and volunteers handle the operations; they currently utilize
14
Carlsbad Lifestyle | September 2016
about 150 volunteers annually. They expect a need for more volunteers to increase as they continue to grow. In 2015, there were about 4,000 attendees. This year, they aim to boost attendance to 5,000. Though they continue to grow, the goal is to maintain the intimate experience they initially started with. Part of the festival’s mission is to support the local economy, which helps sustain the festival itself. “We not only bring something that’s great value to the residents here that they can enjoy, but it’s a clean industry that attracts tourism from outside and helps the entire economy grow,” says Michael. For their opening night, they hold a special event called “It’s A Wrap Food & Wine Reception & Red Carpet,” which showcases participating local restaurants, breweries, wineries, and specialty shops. The film festival also provides exciting networking and educational opportunities for local students interested in film. Students can participate in the short film competition for a cash prize and get exclusive feedback from filmmakers. Journalism students can get a student press badge that enables them to conduct interviews on the festival’s red carpet. WHEN: October 13-16, 2016 VENUES AND PRICES:

Kindness

ou know that something special is about to happen when you arrive at Carlton Lund’s office for a meeting and find a sign welcoming you by name taped to the front door! Spending time with Lund, founder of the Kindness Meter Project, is like being wrapped in a big warm hug, the sort of hug you’d expect from someone who says he wants only one sentence engraved on his tombstone: “He was a kind man.” There’s nothing disingenuous or phony about Lund’s desire to not only be kind himself, but to spread kindness throughout North County, San Diego and eventually around the world. And he’s doing it with parking meters. Lund, who came to Carlsbad in 1972 from Wisconsin shortly after graduating from college, bought his first house the day he arrived and eventually he and his wife Sandy, opened up a successful real estate business. The Lund Team, which includes Carlton and Sandy’s two sons, has been one of
18
Carlsbad Lifestyle | September 2016
the most successful real estate companies in North County for over 30 years. Throughout the past three decades, the Lunds have focused on giving back to their community: Carlton and Sandy were voted Carlsbad’s Citizens of the Year in 2007; he supported and lobbied for the initiatives to bring Legoland to Carlsbad; he worked on establishing the desalination plant; he served on the boards of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation and the Carlsbad Educational Foundation; and he was the driving force behind a 14-year project to install a new Carlsbad sign on Carlsbad Boulevard (Highway 101), replacing the old one that had stood in the same location in the 1930s. “I believe that people are kind and if you give them an opportunity to be kind, then they will,” is a sentiment Lund often expresses, and he’s proving that to be true: one meter
at a time. A decade passed from the day he purchased an old parking meter at a garage sale to installing the first meter at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon trailhead, the goal being to raise money to benefit the Lagoon Foundation. That was in November 2015. Since then,
meters have been installed at Wyland’s Laguna Beach gallery, in Vista at the Moonlight Amphitheater, in Hillcrest at the Deli Llama restaurant, at Tip
Top Meats in Carlsbad, and outside his offices on Innovation Way. Over $7,000 (the meters accept coins and credit cards) has been collected from the meters so far, with the monies going to charities ranging from The Wyland Foundation and the Carlsbad Educational Foundation to Kids for Peace. The Deli Llama site is the most recent installation; the meter was dedicated one month after the Orlando shootings; monies raised will benefit the victims. “If there was ever a time when we need kindness, it’s now,” Lund says, when explaining why he chose that location. “There’s nothing political about kindness.” In September, two meters will be installed at the Carlsbad sign. Monies collected from one of them will pay for sign maintenance and keeping the sign lit, while the other will benefit ten different charities on a rotating basis. “Someone puts in $5, they’ll be donating $.50 to ten charities,” Lund explains. Future plans include making the sign entirely solar-powered. A donation of only $.25 will keep the sign lit 24/7. “You can get involved for just a quarter.” And what about the concept of spreading kindness throughout the world? “I want a kindness meter in front of every Starbucks, all 17,000 of them,” Lund says. “I’ve met with Howard Schultz, we’ve talked about it. It will happen.” When Carlton Lund says something will happen—you know that someday you’ll buy a latte at a Starbucks in Amsterdam, and on your way out—you’ll feed the meter. KindnessMeters.com

The Road to
Retirement ARTICLE GLORIA FOOTE
P
lanning for retirement is not what it used to be. The proverbial gold watch and the lifetime pension are almost a thing of the past. People planning today must be much more involved in where they want to go and how they plan to get there. Here are some financial planning tips to help you travel the right road:
Based on your current retirement savings, are you on track to achieve your desired retirement lifestyle? If not, you may want to modify your current savings plan or lower expectations. START WITH A CURRENT RETIREMENT ANALYSIS.
IS THERE WIGGLE ROOM IN YOUR BUDGET? Being unaware of your actual expenses is a big roadblock to comfortable retirement. Where does the money go? We suggest viewing a full year’s spending, then dividing each expense category by 12 months so you capture 1/12th of your property taxes, insurances, car repairs, and tires – all those things you may pay once or twice a year. It’s incredibly eye opening! You’ll soon know whether you have any wiggle-room to save more for retirement or whether your current spending habits need to change. TAKE THE FREEBIES! If your workplace retirement plan offers a matching contribution, take it! Other free stuff – from auto-escalation (which annually increases your contributions) to plan calculators and participant-education programs – are worthwhile too. Diversification and timely reviews of retirement investments, other assets and strategy, are critical to helping you achieve long term investment goals.
Build uncertainty into your retirement projections, along with some “worst case” assumptions. If longevity runs in your family, add five years to the age of your oldest relative to estimate your own life span. Inflation is a “silent thief ” so STRESS TEST YOUR ASSUMPTIONS:
22
Carlsbad Lifestyle | September 2016
do consider its effect on projected expenses – remembering that medical and energy costs are often higher than other expenses. INSURE THE “WHAT IFS.” As you near retirement, explore long-term care insurance coverage. There are “hybrid” policies which convert unused benefits into life insurance coverage, which can be a great alternative to the “use it or lose it” coverage.
MAKE SURE FAMILY MEMBERS ARE DOING THEIR FINANCIAL PLANNING.
Your plans for retirement can be completely sabotaged if you have to take financial responsibility for caring for other family members. Talk with your children – particularly if they have children – make sure they have adequate life insurance should you find yourself being full-time parents again. Retiring early while you still have health, energy, and a full bucket list, is not an impossible dream. But early planning is critical to the “road you choose to take.” Not comfortable with planning on your own or simply don’t have the time? A professional can help you strategize how to turn your hopes and dreams into a reality. FinancialFocusLLC.com Securities and advisory services offered through National Planning Corporation (NPC). hilanthropic efforts enrich communities and change lives. Based on the philosophy of serving those in need, the National Assistance League (AL) was developed in 1935 by Anne Banning and Ada Edwards Laughlin in Southern California. It quickly spread; now there are 120 AL chapters across the U.S. Following AL’s charitable model is the Assistance League of North Coast (ALNC), serving the communities of Carlsbad, Vista and Oceanside. Established at a guild in 1992, ALNC became AL’s 105th chapter in 2000. Since then, it has grown to approximately 145 members—all volunteers—serving more than 10,000 children over the course of 19,000 service hours. ALNC partners with local schools and health clerks to identify needs in the community, and all 12 of the chapter’s philanthropic programs focus on enriching the lives of children. To promote academic success, ALNC donates books to schools with lower income students through their reading program, I Love To Read. Students compete to read the most books, and the top readers win a prize. One of ALNC’s earliest programs, Footsteps, now serves more than 1,700 low-income children. During the school year, school buses transport children weekly to Payless ShoeSource, where about 20 volunteers act as personal shoppers, fitting children for brand new shoes. They provide six pairs of new socks, and their Working Women’s group assembles health kits packed with daily care essentials, such as toothbrushes, soap and combs. “All the benefit goes to the child; it’s very child-centric,” says Sandy Matheus, President of ALNC. “It really helps build a child’s

self-esteem to have the right shoes, to feel like the other kids, and feel proud about themselves. You see it right away.” After Matheus retired in 2006, she wanted to do volunteer work. When she became an ALNC member, she was immediately hooked. She saw how the organization directly served children in the community. “I didn’t have to write a check and have it go to an unnamed face or person,” says Matheus. “I can see how our money is applied to these children.” ALNC volunteers are active in local schools. For the I’m In Charge program, they talk to 4th graders about home safety if they’re ever home alone. “I think that’s what sets us apart—being a hands-on organization—because we see how our money is spent,” says Matheus. “Every penny of what we earn goes to a child.” About 70 percent of program funding comes from their thrift shop, the Assistance League Thrift Store. Located at 1830 Oceanside Blvd, the boutique-like shop has been very successful. “It’s been an amazing year to see the income from that, so that we can provide more for the schools,” says Matheus. Their programs are also largely supported by grants, donations (which they accept through their website), and corporate sponsorships. The Autumn Fantasy—their annual fundraising event—raises money through sponsorships, raffles, and auctions. Their 22nd annual event will be held on November 5th at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad. You can become an ALNC member for $75/year, or fill out an application as a transient volunteer. ALNC is currently establishing a planned giving program to build an endowment, enabling them to continue the success of the organization for years to come. ALNC.org

They also make wholesome, natural pet treats using spent grains from local breweries In addition, they advocate that all pets have their own Emergency Preparedness Kits and help the pets’ owners to compile them. Gina says, “Oftentimes, our clients will then have kits for pets but not themselves. So we encourage them to prepare one too!” Both are certified and trained for Carlsbad’s Community Emergency Response Team. Additionally, they have even helped clients during difficult times, saying their final goodbyes to beloved pets. The reach of this duo’s commitment to helping animals goes far beyond providing such invaluable services. Both have a strong sense of purpose for community support and sharing or "giving back". Not just to animal organizations, but also in providing support through sponsorships, advertising, donating gift baskets with pet items, sponsoring their own events, and volunteering. The list of organizations they support is impressive, including (though not limited to) Rancho Coastal Humane Society, San Diego Humane Society, Helen Woodward Humane Society, San Diego Botanic Gardens, Boys And Girls Clubs Of Carlsbad, Lions, Tigers and Bears Sanctuary, and Foundation for Animal Care and Education. Susan and Gina sum up their dedication very simply, “We are privileged to support charitable organizations that rescue, shelter and care for animals, enhance the joy and quality of life, benefit our global communities and help those in need. Through promoting organizations, founding and sponsoring events, providing funding and gifts and thoughtful advocacy, we are proud to serve our communities.” AnimalHousePetCare.com
