AS LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE PUBLISHERS, WE ARE OBSESSIVE ABOUT WHERE WE LIVE. Where we live and how we live matter deeply to us. It's why we do what we do. It should come as no surprise, then, that we often find ourselves thinking about our homes and our community in broader ways. How do our lifestyle decisions affect our neighbors, we wonder, and our greater shared communities? We explore that question in the Eco Issue, and we're excited to share what we've learned with you. Being eco-conscious can at times seem overwhelming. But we've found through making this issue, time and time again, that it's often small, everyday decisions that add up to make the biggest impact. In our feature "How to Host a Green Spring Dinner Party," for example, we offer small ways that not only help your party be more green but that also actually enhance the event. In "Beyond the Salad Bar," we learn that a convenient family meal, between soccer practices and dance rehearsals, can also be clean, healthy and wholesome. In "Shopping with a Conscience," we found a place where we can shop for gifts for loved ones or everyday household items

THE NEXT TIME YOU ASK FOR A PLASTIC STRAW, GRAB PLASTIC BAGS AT THE GROCERY STORE OR BUY A BOTTLE OF WATER ON YOUR WAY TO THE GYM (WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF SOMETHING!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.

CROSSROADS PLAZA, IS WHERE CONVENIENCE AND DELICIOUS HEALTH FOOD CONVERGE. It’s where customers with allergies are treated like VIPs, and surprisingly, where salads are not the best-sellers on the menu. Owner Andy Rooney, who is originally from the Raleigh area, explains that CoreLife offers diners an experience many have been craving. “People are starting to really focus on what they’re consuming, where it’s from and what it’s made of,” Andy says. Cary’s Crossroads Plaza appealed to Andy not just because of its convenient location but also

because of how it is a staple within the community. CoreLife is based on the premise that healthy, wholesome food can taste good. The menu is gluten-free and includes green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, warm rice bowls, createyour-own bowls, power plates and a kids menu. There are no sodas. Instead, the restaurant offers a plethora of colorful, handcrafted juices

meant to be a flavor experience for diners. At CoreLife, when a customer shares that they have allergies, they receive special treatment. Andy and the staff refer to them as “A Players.” “We try to make it a big deal that people with allergies feel safe,” Andy says. The CoreLife menu changes every three months to include seasonal ingredients and offerings. Like the green and health food movements, CoreLife’s menu is constantly evolving. “Taste is first,” Andy says, “And we try to take recipes to the next level.” Andy says CoreLife’s heartier options outsell its salads. “We have a broth bowl that takes around 20

THOUGHTFULLY CURATED SHOP MEANT TO IMPROVE BOTH THE LIVES OF CUSTOMERS AND THE OUTCOME OF CONSUMERISM ON THE PLANET. Owner Harry Dodson opened the store late last year with the mission of

offering shoppers the best of the best in eco-friendly goods and has filled it with items, large and small, that reflect his commitment to quality. “At every level of our store, we try for the best value, the best price and the best quality,” Harry says.

The green movement is something Harry describes as both important and thriving. “It’s still in its infancy,” Harry says of the movement. Green4Life’s location makes it convenient for Cary shoppers, who will find everything from gifts like up-cycled scarves and eco-friendly toys to practical household items like bamboo charcoal and luxury linens. Harry thoughtfully handpicked every item at Green4Life. “There are various ways to be eco-friendly,” Harry says. “So everything has a story.” The children’s section at Green4Life is especially impressive and includes everything from handcrafted toys to clothing, perfect for gifting. Green4Life carries lots of Hape brand products as well as handcrafted Kathe Kruse dolls. “Everything in baby clothing and baby accessories is 100 percent organic and natural…from training pants to teethers,” Harry says. Green4Life also sells clothing and accessories for adults. Harry says he looks for fashion that is stylish, comfortable and soft. Comfort and softness, he says, is a hallmark of clothing made from organic materials. There are also great deals to be found at Green4Life, like doormats made from repurposed materials that are colorful and stylish but also affordable. “We are a value-conscious store. The store is a showcase for the best of everything that is eco-conscious.” Green4Life does the legwork for customers by offering items from vendors who are environmentally conscientious. “We call it responsible shopping,” Harry says. At Green4Life, the message is clear: consumers can make a difference, through each and every purchasing decision they make. And they can do it 316 Colonades Way #C202 Cary 919.803.8111 Green4LifeStore.com

with convenience and without sacrificing style. It’s small changes in the way people live and shop, Harry says, that can yield long-term change. “If we all do just a little bit, it will make a big difference,” Harry says.

How to Host a Green Spring Dinner Party

DIANE WOLK, OWNER OF BUSTLED EVENTS, EXPLAINS HOW TO MAKE AN EVENT EQUAL PARTS CHIC AND GREEN ARTICLE MOLLY DANSBY | PHOTOGRAPHY CATHERINE NGUYEN

Cary Lifestyle | April 2019

Spring often brings about causes for celebration, and Diane Wolk proves that making an event more often eco-friendly Spring brings aboutdoesn’t causes for celebration, and Diane Wolk proves mean sacrificing that making an event style. more ecofriendly doesn’t mean sacrificing style. In fact, being more green often enhances a party. As the owner of Bustled Events, Diane knows how to host a stylish dinner. Her tips for making entertaining more green are clever and surprisingly simple. For this dinner party, Diane mixed modern furnishings, like a sleek table, with more lush details, like bold, vibrant floral arrangements. She also mixed more traditional chairs with ghost chairs for contrast. Diane arranged a pretty lounge area nearby complete with furniture, a rug and more flowers. “What’s better than relaxing on a comfortable sofa after dinner with your beverage of choice?” Diane points out. Eco-conscious decisions were made throughout the planning of this dinner, and Diane suggests making them whether hosting a more intimate party at home or a big crowd at a large venue. “Being able to re-purpose something when planning cuts down on waste and is more cost-effective for a lot of my clients,” Diane says. Diane used vintage pink 1950s Depression glass pieces throughout the design. “They brought a hint of blush and vintage style to an otherwise very modern tablescape,” Diane says. Diane recommends using things already on hand as design accents and inspiration when hosting a party. CONTINUED >

HOW TO HOST A GREEN SPRING DINNER PARTY

“If you’re looking to host your own green spring dinner party, start at home. Your own style will easily translate with the belongings you already have,” Diane says. Diane also recommends considering local when planning a party’s menu and florals. “We are so lucky to be in an area filled with local artisans. Everything from local cheese and meats, bread, treats, honey, flowers,” Diane says. In addition to using what you already have and sourcing local food and flowers, Diane suggests renting instead of buying. And many local rental companies, she points out, specialize in vintage pieces instead of new ones, which make the party even more eco-friendly. Diane also recommends keeping candles on hand and a refrigerator stocked with wine and cheese to make hosting even a last-minute spring dinner party an option. “But the most important part of making the event a success is to be a gracious host or hostess,” Diane says. “People are coming for the company, and everyone remembers a good night of laughter.” 24

106 GREY BRIDGE ROW OFFERS THE BEST OF PRESTON WITH SOME DESIGN SURPRISES YOU MUST SEE TO BELIEVE ARTICLE MOLLY DANSBY PHOTOGRAPHY CATHERINE NGUYEN

o r i e n t e d

BRAZILIAN HARDWOODS, A STUNNING MAHOGANY LIBRARY AND A FLAT OPEN LOT ON THE GOLF COURSE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE DOZENS OF FEATURES THAT MAKE THE HOME ON 106 GREY BRIDGE ROW ONE-OF-A-KIND. The 3,904-square-foot home, listed by Blondell Properties, also boasts a prestigious Preston address. Colleen Blondell, owner of Blondell Properties, describes the immaculate home as perfect for families and for entertaining.

“ALMOST ANYTHING YOU COULD WANT TO DO IS JUST A GOLF CART RIDE AWAY.” The grandeur of the home begins just as you enter the foyer. To the left of the entrance is the show-stopping study, which features floor-to-ceiling mahogany, a fireplace and a wine refrigerator. The extensive custom millwork continues throughout the house and is just one of the many details that make it truly spectacular. Beyond the study and living area is a massive screened porch with three ceiling fans and a view of the golf course. The yard, Colleen points out, has loads of potential, especially for a pool or larger outdoor entertaining space. There's also a flagstone patio. Back inside, there is also a family room, dining room and updated kitchen downstairs. Upstairs, off the large master suite is a large sitting/meditation room surrounded by windows. Light floods the space, and there's a gorgeous view of the golf course below. There are three other bedrooms on the second floor as well as a large bonus room, perfect for an entertaining or craft space. 106 Grey Bridge Row offers the best of Preston with its gorgeous location, and it's full of unexpected details throughout. "It's the perfect family home," Colleen says. CONTINUED >

Natural Healing for Lifelong Health What Dr. Jenning’s Patients are saying: I CAN WALK WITHOUT PAIN AGAIN

“After not being able to walk without pain and seeing two different physical therapists I was losing hope. I had been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis but was getting no relief! Mary discovered that the pain was not coming from one area and treated me with acupuncture. She was so comforting during the entire process and after only a few sessions I saw results! She truly has helped heal me and I would recommend her to anyone going thru pain or any ailment!” Colette - Cary, NC EXCELLENT AND THOROUGH SERVICE “Having had some digestive issues and shoulder issues I decided to seek an alternative approach to healing. I so appreciate Dr. Jennings’ knowledge of nutrition and acupuncture. It made a huge difference in my healing process. I have recommended her to many of my friends and family. ACUPUNCTURE AND HOLISTIC HEALTH DR. MARY JENNINGS HAS MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND A DESIRE TO CHANGE LIVES FOR THE BETTER ARTICLE MOLLY DANSBY PHOTOGRAPHY CATHERINE NGUYEN WHILE DR. MARY JENNINGS OF ACUPUNCTURE CENTER FOR WELLNESS HAS MORE THAN 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, HER JOB—AND THE WAY ACUPUNCTURE CHANGES LIVES—STILL EXCITES HER. “Acupuncture is so much more than pain management. We’re really after getting well and staying well,” Dr. Jennings says. The effects of acupuncture on her clients, who range from children to the elderly, prenatal clients and veterans, reinforce her commitment and love of her practice. Dr. Jennings has been particularly touched by her experiences working with veterans, she says. “I am in awe of their dedication and sacrifices,” Dr. Jennings says. Dr. Jennings says she loves seeing acupuncture improve lives. “The ability to make changes quickly in someone’s health…it’s really exciting to see people get well,” she says. Acupuncture Center for Wellness is conveniently located on Keisler Drive off Tryon Road in Cary. “I like that my office is very close to all kinds of other health practitioners,” she says. Dr. Jennings also says she likes Cary’s eclectic mix of businesses and citizens who she says she admires for “desiring to learn and take care of themselves.” Learning and long-term health are important to her, she says, and it’s the foundation of so much of what she does at the center. Her holistic approach is important when addressing her clients’ needs and demands. “The word doctor means teacher,” Dr. Jennings points out. She says she often sees clients who visit due to a specific issue or pain point that often ends up being related to something larger happening in their bodies. Her experience helps Dr. Jennings see the body in a holistic way that often leads to assisting patients long-

prevention as it is healing. Dr. Jennings’ experience and passion are obvious when she talks about her work, but it’s her openness and graciousness that really shines. “When somebody has something and they’re not sure if acupuncture would be helpful…ask,” she recommends. 34
