area. As such, these performances will feature local musicians. And part of what makes jazz so special? Improvisation. “I can’t tell you what I am going to play on any given night, there are so many different variables,” Gerald says. “It is a function of the mood the band is in, the type of crowd, what kind of mood I’m in. Live jazz is a conversation between me, the band members and the audience. Lisa says she hopes this is an opportunity to think beyond the restrictions of the pandemic and break artistic ground that welcomes a different audience and expand the genre. “When you actually see how live jazz music is made and the performers on stage, that turns people into jazz fans,” Lisa says, “It is more than just listening to music, it is watching a performance. You can see the pleasure they take in the work. The audience is watching something new being created.” Covid-19 social distancing requirements will make this performance extraordinary as the theater will be limited to 125 people. “For the 124 ticket holders, this will be an experience that they will never forget, it will feel almost like a house concert,” Lisa says. “This time of isolation has been painful for performing artists who thrive on the interaction between themselves and the audience.” Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Gerald spent the early years of his career recording with prominent artists such as Whitney Houston, Anita Baker and Ray Parker Jr and released his first album in 1987. After years of touring, he and wife Glynnis started to look for a retreat from all the travel.

WINTER IS A MAGICAL TIME TO VISIT DUNTON COLORADO. Dunton Hot Springs is a year round high-end luxury resort that features its 1880s miners cabins that have been refurbished into luxury accommodations.

ages start at about $2,000 per night. The Dunton village features its historic Bathhouse with hot spring mineral pool, spa house, and Dancehall & Saloon with chef-driven cuisine. From the outside, this weathered and creaky twostory miner’s cabin doesn’t look like much. But the inside of what is known as The Library is a book lover’s paradise, with its hundreds of diverse titles lining the wrap-around shelves and overstuffed seating, animal skin rugs and wood fireplace — an invitation to vacationing guests to curl up and read a while. This bounty of pages shouldn’t be here, in the middle-of-nowhere Colorado forest. But just like The Saloon a short walk away offering chef-driven mountain cuisine and crisp G&Ts for happy hour, I’m so glad that it does. I’m here for an extended weekend at Dunton Hot Springs, a boutique luxury mountain resort about 25 miles southwest of Telluride, which sits along the West Fork of the Dolores River. It’s a collection of about two dozen 1880’s miners cabins, once strewn throughout the valley but moved on-site and refurbished into high-end accommodations. There’s an open-air chapel, yoga studio and spa house for massages and other treatments. Some of the cabins feature hot-spring-fed soaking tubs. As a book lover, I’m giddy to spend some time in The Library (a wedding gift from the owner to his wife many years ago), but that’s not the main attraction here. I was delighted to learn that Dunton offers special add-ons to all accommodation bookings, including elopement and intimate wedding packages, romantic getaways and ski and soak packages. Can you just imagine being proposed to in The Library? Strap on a pair of snowshoes and explore the serene San Juan Mountains. Climb into Dunton’s very own Snowcat and scale to 10,000 feet for a day 20

of snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on trail laid out by former Olympic Nordic skier Wendy Wegner, or enjoy a winter wonderland experience at Dunton River Camp where the adventurous can delight in a number of winter activities and all can spend a cozy, comfortable afternoon nestled by the fire in the River Camp’s Farm House enjoying hot chocolate, board games, and a warm lunch celebrating life’s simple pleasures. You have the opportunity to do as much or as little as you choose, without feeling guilty. The Bathhouse is the centerpiece here and features a spectacular hot bathing pool, nearby cold-plunge stone tub, and hypnotic mountain views from the sliding barn-door windows. A sauna and natural soaking pool sit right outside. This was the first place I headed after checking into Christy’s Tent, our home away from home for the weekend. I slipped into the thick green Dunton spa robe and padded down the dirt road to start the irresistible circuit, from bathing pool, to cold plunge, to outdoor pool, and back again. And then to Christy’s Tent, a misnomer if ever there was one. This walled-tent cabin with adjoining bath suite is furnished with wrought-iron bed, sumptuously thick and downy bedding, and comfortable and clever camp rocking chair and desk. There’s a wood-burning stove that makes winter guests very happy. If there’s one thing I’ve learned here so far, it’s that all the soaking can make a guest famished.

As if by magic, the original Dancehall & Saloon silently beckons guests for inventive and hearty breakfasts, and dinners with menu offerings such as Alaskan Halibut with XO Sauce, Bison Tartare, and Lombatello with Salsa Seca. And when you’re waiting for one of those afternoon cocktails, take a moment to check out the scratchings and scrawlings on the Saloon’s original bar, where the name Butch Cassidy is rumored to have been carved there by the man himself. Here at Dunton, surprises and delights abound. It really does feel like a winter wonderland. Throughout my stay I constantly slipped away into my own little world. No matter what I was doing with my time the breathtaking views from every direction were always a plenty. This luxury five-star resort nestled in the Colorado Rockies is a bucket list must.

GIVING BACK

EXTENDED HANDS OF HOPE

NONPROFIT GIVES SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIMS A PLACE TO PROCESS AND HEAL

30

Castle Rock Lifestyle | December 2020

ARTICLE HANNAH ECHOLS PHOTOGRAPHY SARAH MAJKA “HOPE IS BEING ABLE TO SEE THAT THERE IS LIGHT DESPITE ALL OF THE DARKNESS.” — Desmond Tutu Light eradicates darkness and exposes hidden injustices. Awareness about a certain injustice— sex trafficking— is on the rise, and a group of hopeful Coloradans are fighting it with open hands. Sex trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which individuals perform commercial sex through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. According to the National Human Trafficking group, there were 127 sex trafficking cases in Colorado in 2018. That’s not to mention all of the crimes that went undocumented. Many of these victims are children. Statistics are just numbers,” notes Sarah Majka. “Those don’t hit home. But when you hear a real story about a parent that trafficks their child, a runaway who has to sell themselves to survive, or a young girl who falls in the hands of a “boyfriend”/predator who sells her, that is when the statistics become glaringly and painfully real. Sarah is the Developmental Director for Extended Hands of Hope (EHH), a nonprofit that provides a safe house and trauma-informed supportive services to girls from the ages of 11 to 17 that have undergone sex trafficking or are at risk of being trafficked. They also have a Community Program for girls 17+ to help assist with case management, holistic care, life skills, advocacy, family relations and beyond. True to the name, a safe home is a haven where people who have experienced some form of trauma can live and recover. The Avanti House, EHH’s safe house, is a farmhouse-style building tucked away on 10 acres of land. The word Avanti means “come in”, and the cozy atmosphere of EHH’s refuge stays consistent with it’s inviting namesake. It contains two bedrooms, a communal living room, and can house up to five girls at a time. They aim to stay at capacity because of the huge need, and the hope is that the girls will stay for 1-2 years. The program manager at the Avanti House, D’Shayanna Donning, notes that the decision to stay at the safe house is often a complicated one for the girls. “It’s not always warm fuzzies at Avanti House. The work that we ask these girls to do is HARD. They are faced with working through vast traumas, and are expected to follow rules that may seem silly or unrealistic to them,” she says. The understanding that healing is a journey is what allows EHH to operate with a sustainable, realistic hope. The team celebrates small successes and provides space to grow. “We might be only be one link on a long chain of recovery,” Sarah explains. “These young girls don’t just come to the house, get their treatment, earn a high school degree and become miraculously reintegrated into society.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Sadly, only one percent of trafficking victims nationwide have a shelter bed available. This means that many adults are left homeless and many children are looped into the foster care system. According to Jefferson County and Arapahoe County social services, there are young girls in Denver that will not be alive in one year if there isn’t an intervention of safe housing and services for them. The team at Extended Hands of Hope is doing what they can to mitigate the need. They have a 24-hour team in the Avanti House, as well as a teacher and a therapist. Through the Carriers of Hope program, girls are partnered with a community mentor who invests in them both when they are in the safe house and once they leave. In addition, they created an empowerment and entrepreneurship program called ‘Simply Good’ where they sell all natural, handmade body and lip scrubs. EHH hopes to accrue the support necessary to build more safe houses on their expansive property. Each room they’re able to offer has the potential to redirect the course of a young girl’s life. The Coronavirus has hindered EHH fundraising efforts while simultaneously exacerbating the need for their services. “There’s more demand for help because more kids are at home, environments are more toxic for abuse, and many children run out on the streets to escape,” Sarah says. In addition, children are spending more time online for school and socializing, so traffickers are targeting them on the internet. According to Web-IQ, a cyber company that combats illegal actions through extracting online data, there was a 200 percent spike in posts on child sex abuse forums between February and March, combined with nearly 90 percent drop in the amount of child sex abuse material removed from the internet. EatUp! Denver, an annual fundraiser that typically generates up to $100,000 in fund for EHH, only raised 15 percent of that total this year. Though the Coronavirus has been detrimental to the majority of the population’s pocketbooks, Sarah urges people and companies who haven’t been negatively affected to consider giving to EHH. “Giving is living,” she says, “Sex trafficking is in our backyards, it’s under our noses, and once you know, you can’t unknow. Everyone can play a part.” EHH”s Year End Campaign “Sowing Hope” is coming up quickly, along with Colorado Gives Day on December 8th. You can easily donate at www.extendedhandsofhope.org, or reach out to Sarah at smajka@extendedhandsofhope.org for more information on how to become a Sower of Hope!
