January - Health & Wellness Issue
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue.
But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different.
When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse!
For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine!
It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices.
So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year.
Here’s to you! Happy New Year!

RELAX AND R-“EVIVE”
As a mother juggling her family and her business, Julia Cheng of Chatham appreciates the importance of self-care.

EVIVE also offers over 20 types of facials, with each customized according to clients’ skin types and needs. EVIVE uses spa products developed by G.M. Collin, a 65-year-old French brand celebrated in the industry for

our own sanity,” she says.
Julia, who owns EVIVE Spas (formerly Spring Beauty Spas), explains that just like we take our cars in for maintenance on a regular basis, we also have to do the same for our bodies. Our bodies are so much more valuable than our cars!
The centers - located in Millburn, Cranford, Springfield, Hillsborough, and Bedminster, New Jersey, as well as in SoHo, New York - offer massages, facials, waxing, and eyelash extensions, but some have their own additional specialties. For example, the Cranford location has a Himalayan Salt wellness room. The Springfield location offers the ultra-popular head spa, which combines deep cleansing and conditioning with a relaxing head massage to get rid of any product buildup on the scalp while promoting blood circulation to the area.
To begin the relaxation process, the clients can start with massage with hot

GM Collin Sea “C” Spa can brighten skin pigmentation, while GM Collin Collagen 90 and Botinol® clinical treatment facials can both dramatically reduce visible lines while hydrating the skin. Another favorite is the Oxygen Facial, which allows a serum to absorb into the skin to provide an intense dose that helps skin stay hydrated, especially during the winter season.
One of EVIVE’s newest offerings in Springfield and SoHo is cosmetic permanent makeup, which uses the newest and most advanced technique in the industry. For example, for eyebrows, the Spas use the Nano Brow technique, which improve the duration of color in the skin along with eliminating downtime after the service compared to microblading. Nano Brows imitate the hair stroke, and fill in the sparse area of the eyebrow.

In addition to helping clients look and feel their best, Julia’s other mission is to make spa services accessible and affordable for more people. PATIENTS WORLDWIDE SEEK
DR. SPIRO'S AWARD-WINNING EXPERTISE, COMPASSION, AND ARTISTIC VISION.
Nestled in West Orange, New Jersey, the office of Dr. Scott Spiro stands as a destination for patients from across the United States and beyond, drawn by his expertise and artistry in plastic surgery. With over 28 years of experience, Dr. Spiro’s dedication to his craft, coupled with a unique perspective shaped by his background as an artist, has built him a reputation as an award-winning plastic surgeon and a compassionate healer. His slogan, “Surgeon By Trade, Artist At Heart,” perfectly encapsulates his approach—a blend of scientific precision and creative vision that transforms and empowers his patients.
When asked about the latest innovations in body aesthetics, Dr. Spiro is enthusiastic about the advancements in breast surgery, noting the use of S.A.M.s (slow absorbable mesh) and his pioneering concept of spherical wraps and non-implant auto augmentation breast lifting. These techniques offer not only aesthetic enhancements but also long-lasting support and comfort for his patients. His approach to procedures such as tummy tucks and liposuction highlights his attention to each individual’s unique body structure. “I use cues from underlying rib and hip anatomy along with my ability to diagnose and treat abdominal wall laxity,” Dr. Spiro explains. His artistic sensibility allows him to visualize the final outcome, often resulting in what he calls the “shrink wrap effect” for a smooth, natural contour.
For Dr. Spiro, confidence and happiness are the ultimate goals of plastic surgery. “Patients just want to feel comfortable in their own bodies,” he says. This is especially evident in his facial transformations, where the impact can be life-changing. Reflecting on one memorable case, he shares, “I have a facelift patient who said her aging made her feel ugly, and now she feels beautiful again.” His advice to those considering facial surgery is grounded in
wisdom and realism: “Do your research. Don’t believe everything you see on social media, and remember, surgery requires recovery. Be patient.”
Breast reconstruction, however, is where Dr. Spiro’s empathy truly shines. For many women, this journey is deeply personal and often fraught with emotional challenges. Dr. Spiro and his team take pride in providing individualized, compassionate care that offers hope and comfort. He recounts a recent success with a patient who had undergone bilateral mastectomies, describing how she hugged him and expressed gratitude for making the journey far simpler than she had feared. “We try to be a positive force for our patients in trying times,” he says, emphasizing the support network his practice offers to each patient.
Beyond his surgical accomplishments, Dr. Spiro also champions non-surgical treatments like Botox, fillers, Microneedling with PRP, Coolsculpting and Diamond Glow facials through his med spa services. “We serve a wide age range, from 20-year-olds to those in their 70s, who benefit from these minimally invasive procedures,” he explains. His practice remains at the forefront of new non-surgical innovations, always with an eye for safety and efficacy.
Dr. Spiro’s backgroundas an artist profoundly influences his approach to plastic surgery. “Art and surgery should go hand in hand. I can look at a problem and immediately decide what’s wrong and how to solve it,” he says. His gift for visualizing the final result from the outset is not only a testament to his skill but also to his empathy and intuitive understanding of his patients’ desires.
Among Dr. Spiro’s many achievements, his generosity stands out. He is volunteer faculty for Rutger’s Plastic Surgery Residency and a recent award winner as “most influential faculty leader”. Additionally, the ‘Dr. Scott and Susy Spiro Welcome Desk’ at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is a testament to his commitment to community care. Seeing the need for a warm, personal space where families could wait for loved ones undergoing surgery, he transformed the mezzanine level of the Cooperman Pavilion into a sanctuary. “I wanted to recognize the OR staff who don’t always get to share in the credit for a job well done,” he says, reflecting the kindness that permeates every aspect of his practice.
Dr. Scott Spiro’s career has touched thousands of lives, bringing comfort, beauty, and self-assurance to his patients. His artistic vision, dedication to excellence, and compassionate heart have left an indelible mark not only on the field of plastic surgery but also on the lives of the many patients he serves. In the words of one of his patients, “I will always feel that I have open door to come back whenever I have the need”—a testament to the trust, respect, and gratitude that Dr. Spiro inspires in all who meet him. A high-end, welcoming practice that puts patients first.
Unlike other dental issues, periodontal disease typically doesn’t cause any pain, and even though 47% of Americans have it, they don’t actually know it. Periodontitis cannot be reversed but it can be stopped. However, if it is left untreated, it can ultimately cause tooth loss and underlying health issues.
“We restore patient’s health by treating gum disease, whether it’s mild, moderate or severe,” says board-certified periodontist, Dr. Mark Khaimov of MK Periodontics & Implant Dentistry in Florham Park and Nutley. “It is very rewarding but it’s also challenging because every single case is unique.”
While some general dentists treat periodontal disease, periodontists are specialists who have completed three additional years of training after dental school. “Most people that come to us are sent from their dentists,” says board-certified periodontist, Dr. Courtney Pantirer, who joined MK Periodontics at the Florham Park location in June. “In addition to bone loss related to periodontal disease, patients are referred because they have recession and need a gum graft or have missing teeth and need implants. We provide all kinds of surgical and non-surgical options (such as laser periodontal therapy) to treat our patients.”
Periodontists can really transform patients’ lives, whether it’s replacing a front tooth to restore a smile or a back tooth to provide better function to be able to chew. “It’s a very rewarding career,” she says.
The need for periodontal care is high, and that’s one of the reasons Dr. Khaimov decided to expand his practice from one to two offices. The Florham Park location was already established under a different name, so Dr. Khaimov looks forward to continuing the high level of care that the patients were accustomed to receiving. He prides himself on having a recently renovated bright space with stateof-the-art technology that includes digital x-rays, cone beam CT technology, an Intraoral scanner, and Piezosurgery® laser therapy, to name just a few. It’s a true high-end practice in a great neighborhood.
Dr. Khaimov and Dr. Pantirer want patients to feel comfortable from the time they walk in the door until the time they leave. “Everyone in the practice, from our front desk to our assistants to our hygienists, are friendly, highly trained, welcoming and very sympathetic to the patients’ needs” says Dr. Khaimov.
The two doctors refer to MK Periodontics & Implant Dentistry as a boutique practice. “We take time to understand our patients’ needs and to make them feel relaxed,” says Dr. Pantirer. “Our philosophy is to treat all people with respect and individuality and give them as much time as needed for their comfort.”
Although the doctors work a lot, they also maintain a positive work-life balance. “I like spending time with my three kids, and I’m very busy with my oldest son, who is playing hockey on a travel team,” says Dr. Khaimov.
Dr. Pantirer is married with a 18-month-old son and lives near the Florham Park office. Along with her dental career, she teaches one day a week at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and sits on volunteer boards for Cooperman Barnabas Hospital and Wharton Arts. She also volunteers with the Jewish Federation.

Come Stay at the Lodge

“There’s always something new to enjoy here, regardless of the season,” says Erica
An extraordinary experience awaits guests at The Lodge at Woodloch. Located in Hawley, Pennsylvania, it’s a place to refresh and rejuvenate bodies and minds. While there, you’ll feel like you traveled into a whole other world even though it’s a short two-hour car ride away.
“We’re close to many major metropolitan areas, yet when guests arrive, they immediately feel worlds away,” says Erica Bloch, Associate Director of Communications for The Lodge at Woodloch. “We’re fortunate to be surrounded by gorgeous forests and lakes. It’s the perfect antidote from the hustle bustle of the city.”
The Lodge at Woodloch is a sister property of Woodloch Pines, which opened over 60 years ago. There’s also Woodloch Springs, which has a golf course and guest homes. While the other properties are open to everyone, the Lodge, which is just two miles down the road, is a destination spa that welcomes guests 16 and older.
“While spas are sometimes perceived as more feminine spaces, we’ve designed The Lodge at Woodloch to be a destination for everyone,” Bloch notes. “Our building is crafted with local materials like Pennsylvania bluestone and wood, blending seamlessly into the natural surroundings across our 500-acre property. It’s a warm, inviting environment for all our guests.”
Many luxurious treatments are offered at this 40,000 square foot spa. “Our Rosemary Awakening body treatment is our signature service,” Erica shares. “The treatment combines a rejuvenating body scrub and massage, featuring our signature Rosemary Mint scent, and is always a guest favorite. Another highlight is our Blues Be Gone massage, designed to support the adrenal system, flush out toxins, and energize the body—ideal for recovery and renewal.”
There are also Swedish massages, body wraps, facials, float therapy, romantic spa treatments for two, a hair and nail salon, and much more. “The water features in our aqua garden are about as relaxing as it gets. We have an indoor pool adjacent to two whirlpools which have water walls that guests can stand under for a hydro-massage experience. Our outdoor infinity whirlpool overlooks the beautiful fern covered woods that surround us.”
In recent years, The Lodge unveiled its snow room. “Guests have been loving our salt sauna and snow room which gives the full contrast therapy experience that has become so popular. After spending time warming up in the sauna, you proceed to the snow room to cool down. Fresh snow is blown in every evening, so it’s always pristine. The Scandinavian-inspired practice is not only invigorating but has heart health and stress relieving benefits.”
Spa treatments are available for people who aren’t overnight guests as well (although guests do get priority scheduling). They are able to use the spa facility which includes the pool and hydro massage, water walls and sauna. There’s also a state of the art fitness center and individualized fitness and wellness classes.
In warmer months, guests love kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing on the lake, and bike riding and hikes. “There’s always something new to enjoy here, regardless of the season,” says Erica. “In the warmer months, we have kayaking, paddleboarding, and biking, while in the colder months, guests can enjoy activities like snowshoeing and winter hikes. We’re fortunate to have over seven miles of nature trails to explore right here on property.”
“Each season brings its own unique charm; it’s impossible to pick just one as the best time to visit,” says Bloch. “And with over 35 daily classes covering

everything from art and cooking to wine and wellness, guests can truly tailor their experience. Plus, the special presenters we feature on weekends — from authors to wellness experts to organizational gurus and everything in between —add even inspiration to each stay.”
Since The Lodge at Woodloch is all inclusive, guests receive three meals per day at its Tree Restaurant. “Our cuisine really brings the entire experience to a whole new level,” says Erica. “Our chefs emphasize farm-to-table ingredients, with many sourced right from our own on-site garden, along with seasonal produce from local farmers. It’s all about delivering fresh flavors and nutritious options that enhance the wellness experience.”
There are 59 guest rooms, all of which have been completely renovated in the past few years. “The smaller number of guest rooms creates an even more peaceful and intimate environment,” says Bloch. “And the private verandas in every room are such a special touch—they let guests soak in the beauty of the surroundings in their own little sanctuary.”
There are gorgeous views of either its five-acre lake, or the woodlands; there is also a waterfall on the front
side of the building. There’s free Wi-Fi, but the public areas of the Lodge are cell-phone free. Of course, guests can use them in their own rooms.
People typically stay for a long weekend, and most travel from the tri-state area, although some come from much farther away. “While many of our guests come from major metro areas in the Northeast, it’s not uncommon to hear from someone who has traveled from across the country or even across the world. We feel very grateful to receive feedback from many of our well-traveled guests that there is no other spa quite like ours.”
Guests at The Lodge can also take advantage of offerings at the family resort. “There are a ton of additional activities that Lodge guests can also enjoy just two and a half miles down the road at Woodloch Pines. Everything from go karts to bumper cars to athletic contests and trivia games as well as a Broadway-style musical on Saturday nights – it just adds a whole other element to the stay.”
To book a stay, which is typically 60 days out, go to https://www.thelodgeatwoodloch.com/.

Regrounding
As the new year kicks off, it’s the ideal time to pause, reflect, and rejuvenate. Restorative Retreat offers a luxurious, natural transition and a space to step back. This three-day retreat, set against one of North America’s most stunning landscapes, is tailored for travelers seeking a unique escape to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with themselves.
With guided mindfulness sessions, nutritious meals, and horseback riding for all skill levels, the retreat balances rest and play. Activities are designed to reset wellness routines, deepen connection, and inspire a renewed sense of purpose with the serene beauty of the surroundings playing an integral role in the healing journey.
Participants enjoy private rooms, savor incredible farmto-table meals, and engage in restorative sessions. The holistic approach blends mindfulness, breathwork, and mental health modalities, helping individuals understand their health on a deeper level and providing tools for healing, growth, and personal transformation.
Each day ends with a sunset-soaked dinner that nourishes both body and soul. Each element of the retreat draws back on that original vision—deeper connection to self, horses, nature and others—so the horseback riding, the guided
sessions and even the meals allow guests to engage. Sessions are curated to the group’s needs as well as the intention to foster growth and development. Whether it is breathwork, meditation, therapeutic writing, or teaching about the nervous system, the hope is that everyone leaves feeling supported and inspired. Inspired to learn more and supported in where they are at in their journey right here and right now.
Co-host and photographer EB Combs says, “There’s horseback riding, but not the vacation riding you might be accustomed to—riders are encouraged to spread out and move out their horses according to their riding ability. It really is something else to be able to ride outside in nature like this.” After departing, participants receive a professional portrait gallery capturing the memories and reflections of their transformative journey.
This year the retreats will be hosted at The Hideout in Shell, Wyoming, offering an immersive experience in a wild, beautiful setting. To secure a spot, interested individuals are encouraged to join the announcement list or waitlist.
